The author's background in aviation and military service shine throughout the book and give it an authentic edge. The story takes place in the not too distant future and the story line contains the usual cast of bad guys. If you are looking for fleet actions, ground pounding, futuristic science fiction, this is not your cup of tea. If, however, you enjoy a crisp story, plenty of suspense mixed with page turning action presented against a hard science backdrop in a well edited format--this book does not disappoint.

That is, even though the story isn't real, it could become reality in the not-too-distant future. The technology isn't quite there yet, but it's right around the corner.I loved the plot and action, even more so than the first novel (Perigee). The characters are fantastic, I was happy to see some familiar faces. The action is non-stop (in space and on the ground) which makes it difficult to put down. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves action, new technology, space travel, or anyone who just wants a good read!

Not a wasted sentence. The hard science Patrick Chiles (math astrophysicist nerd) dug into in the plot reminds me of the way it was done in The Martian and this is that good. IT'S THAT GOOD! Mark my words -- this will get optioned and become a hit movie or Hollywood is dumb and I'm an idiot.Idiot could be possible but probably not likely since I've had 12 #1 books myself (admittedly they are non-fiction health/preventive medicine books but hey, at least they ranked).-- Dan Purser MD[...]

In 2036, true artificial intelligence bots (Taibots) live in society and form relationships with humans; they behave like humans in every aspect. However, Olivia thinks Taibots are just a piece of machinery and have no understanding of what they are talking about. In other words, she doesn’t believe artificial consciousness is possible. But things get complicated after Toby enters her life. Despite the fact he seems like a Taibot, Olivia is certain Toby has human consciousness. On the eve of the sixth mass extinction, resulting from anthropogenic climate change, is artificial consciousness the answer to keeping human consciousness—the apex of 4.5 billion years of evolution—sustained in a universe without humans? Is Olivia able to find out why Toby so resembles her boyfriend who died five years earlier? How would the world deal with the imminent global wipe-out? It’s a fast-paced adventure that entails philosophical discussions about consciousness, love, life, the future of humanity and the universe.

I found the dialog unconvincing and several points overstated. The title refers to a hypothetical method by which an artificially intelligent machine could convince a human that its intelligence was natural. In the book, robots were indistinguishable from humans because some humans had embedded chips enhancing their abilities. This seems unconvincing to me since it overlooks other ways of telling humans from robots.I recently re-watched the movie, Blade Runner. Although it was made years ago I still find it convincing despite the cheesy way in which it presents genetic engineering. I had no difficulty believing that Replicants are intelligent engineered beings which exist in the distant future of 2019.What makes Blade Runner believable is good world building. It's inadequate to simply state that the climate is over-heated and human extinction imminent. A reader must be shown, and not with garden parties that are indistinguishable from those of the present day. Better world building would have improved this book.

In the country of Taihandria, in the world of Arethea, the star gods have long since vanished, and their language—music—is outlawed since it has magical power and can change the very land itself. When the Solanese sahhar Manon Valen secretly performs a daram, an ancient, long-forgotten song ritual, she desperately hopes that the spell will produce a champion who will unite her oppressed people against their repressive Taihandrian overlords. Instead, her entreaty is answered by the appearance of five bumbling troubadours—the English rock band Sun—from a place Manon has never heard of, Earth. These bewildered musicians suddenly and inexplicably find themselves performing before a raucous medieval audience, and are deemed heretical sorcerers. With four of the band imprisoned, their one hope is that their guitarist, Robin Wood, will find help by forming an alliance with Manon Valen and her people, who think Robin is a singularly gifted sorcerer. But when this alliance can be forged only if Robin and Manon—who don’t even like each other—take part in an extraordinary Solanese ritual that binds them together, things get complicated. Daram is a spellbinding, humorous, and richly imagined novel that creates unforgettable characters readers will come to love.

Totally absorbing, fantastic read By Amazon Customer I am a complete enthusiast of the fantasy book genre and this is exactly the type of story that keeps me going back for more. Reminiscent of the Fionavar Tapestry, five musicians from modern day earth are violently transported to an alternate universe and immediately embroiled in the politics and intrigue of the new world including an impending war. The language is frequently lyrical (appropriate for a book whose central premise includes the fact that music has magical powers that can change the very land and stars), while maintaining the pace of the storytelling. As with many fantasy characters, these reluctant travellers are initially lost in the new land, but soon realize they can wield enormous power, enabling them to awaken gods, influence wars, and alter the very course of Taihandria. Overall, a great read and one that leaves you looking forward to Book Two.

I am not usually a fan of fantasy, so I hesitated at first, but this character-driven story drew me in from the beginning, and I stayed up too late many nights reading it. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. One of the things I liked best was the characters' connection to music and its power, and the climactic music scene near the end was riveting. Well done!

Amazon.com Review Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2011: In a return to the eye-popping style of his Caldecott-award winner,The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Brian Selznick’s latest masterpiece, Wonderstruck, is a vision of imagination and storytelling . In the first of two alternating stories, Ben is struck deaf moments after discovering a clue to his father’s identity, but undaunted, he follows the clue’s trail to the American Museum of Natural History, in New York City. Flash to Rose’s story, told simultaneously through pictures, who has also followed the trail of a loved one to the museum--only 50 years before Ben. Selnick’s beautifully detailed illustrations draw the reader inside the museum’s myriad curiosities and wonders, following Ben and Rose in their search for connection. Ultimately, their lives collide in a surprising and inspired twist that is breathtaking and life-affirming. --Seira Wilson

At over 600 pages, Wonderstruck is, physically, a brick of a book but it is filled with poetry of intertwining prose and picture and will, hopefully, leave you as 'Wonderstruck' as it left me.It is 1977 in Gunflint Lake, Minnesota, and Ben Wilson is a young boy who has lost his mother. He now lives with his well-meaning aunt and uncle who are struggling financially, sharing a room with a resentful and bullying cousin, Robby, and wishing for the one thing that he can never have. Robby, partially deaf, has grown up in the sheltered world created by his mom, a single mother and librarian who fed his fascination with outer space and covered their fridge with her favorite quotations, and she isn't coming back. "The North Star was the last star in the tail of the Little Dipper, and the book said that travelers had used this star for centuries to find their way when they were lost. "If you are ever lost," his mom said when he showed her the book, "just find the North Star and it will lead you home." His mom smiled, and pointed to a bulletin board next to her desk. Unlike the refrigerator at home, it had just one quote taped to it. Ben read it out loud: "'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.'" Because his mom was the town librarian, Ben was used to being surrounded by quotes from books, many of which he didn't fully understand. But this one struck him as particularly strange." (p.21-22)One night, while looking up at the stars from the window of his cousin's room, Ben sees a light in his mother's window that, for him, is the beginning of a journey to find what has always been missing from his life.Interspersed with Ben's story is that of a young girl, told only in pictures. Her story begins enigmatically- a small girl sitting at a desk, surrounded by models of skyscrapers which appear to be made after the view from her window of the 1927 New York City skyline. Why does she write a note with the words "Help Me" on it? Is she a prisoner in this room where she must have spent so many painstaking hours creating the models around her? Why does she seem fixated on a famous actress, enough so to climb down the tree outside her window to sneak off to see one of her silent films at the movie theater?Selznick has intricately woven the two stories together- two separate stories that parallel one another so completely they help to tell the other, eventually merging into one larger image. This story will grab you by the heart, break it and then put it back together again and make it want to sing. It is lovely and different- both a work of literature and a work of art. When you pick this book up and flip through it, it will appear to be a sort of overblown picture book. As you read, however, you will find that, while there are more pages of pictures than of text(I mean that seriously- there are 460 pages of artwork out of the 600+, so if you are not interested in a book with a largely graphic component, this may not be for you), the story is richly layered and full of small, important details, both in words and pictures.Even though you will likely find this book classified among the young reader's section and it is a story about two children, the book is like a 'Cabinet of Wonder' that Ben reads about in one of his mother's books- an ornate piece of furniture "with dozens of tiny doors and drawers and hidden spaces filled with a nearly infinite variety of amazing items". Adults should find themselves more than sufficiently challenged to delve into all the symbolism and fine details. Kids and adults will be captured by the compelling prose and beautiful pencil drawings- I went back and looked at various pictures often several times, sometimes scanning for more clues, more details, but often just to marvel at the story unfolding in front of me.I cannot wait to share this with my 8 and 11 year-old daughters- my 11-year-old has already absconded with it but I think we will be reading it again, storybook style, as a family over the next few days. This is the kind of book that provides a strong argument against getting rid of 'real' books in favor of e-books. I know this will be among my more treasured volumes and will remain on my shelf, even as I cull other books from the 'herd'. I hope that readers will not pass on this because it looks too much like a 'children's book', really, I believe it is an 'everyone's book'.

Awestruck at "Wonderstruck" By James Hiller Many of my friends are just discovering Brian Selznick's book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, perhaps because of the movie coming out in a few months time. In that delightful tale, we are whisked away to a Parisian train station, a boy with a few secrets, an even more secretive marvelous machine, and the redemptive powers of it all. Selznick somehow managed to blend a few of my favorite things in that story (trains! silent movies! kids!) into quite a modern and engaging story. The question is: would lightening strike again? The answer is, I'm so happy to report, a resounding yes. "Wonderstruck" is a blessing, a marvel, another masterstroke from this author/artist.In this book, we meet Ben, deaf in one ear, mourning the loss of his librarian mother from icy roads in Northern Minnesota in the 1970's. Living with aunt and uncle now, Ben longs to unlock many of his own mysteries, from his dreaming about wolves to the identity of his father. Ben starts his journey by returning one night to his house, in which going through his mother's things, he uncovers many things she had kept hidden from him, which soon launches his quest. In a second story, told not through text but pictures, we meet Rose, a girl living in 1920's New Jersey with views of New York City, who is starstruck by a silent film actress and longs to see her. Wonderstruck tells and shows the stories of these two people in ways that surprise and delight the reader through the story, none of which shall be revealed here.Selznick does many things in this book that, beyond the marvelous story he tells, show true craftsmanship. First, as it was true with Hugo Cabret, his illustrations are heartfelt and glorious. As an artist, he understands the importance of the eyes, and in each of his drawings that have characters in them, you are immediately drawn to them. It's so reflective of silent films, in which the performers told the stories with their eyes. Secondly, he starts Ben's and Rose's stories in two different ways: Ben uses words, Rose uses pictures. While the stories are occurring in different decades, he skillfully blends the end of one part of the first story, and seemingly starts the second one at a similar spot. I didn't notice he was doing this until halfway through the book, and by then, I was sold on his brilliance.Wonderstruck manages to take some more of my interests and blends them together: New York City, museums, dioramas, and Minnesota (that's where I was born). In fact, as I was reading this book, on my coffee table sits a book about the dioramas in the American Museum of Natural History: Windows on Nature: The Great Habitat Dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History. It's odd how life arranges itself to coincide with stories. Finally, a friendship forms between Ben and another boy (details not to be revealed here!) that so touched me, that it brought out the theme that Selznick always dwells on: relationships.I can't recommend this book highly enough; it's filled with honest people, real emotions, and at its heart, the human relationships we all strive to thrive upon. This is the book of the year.

Ben has to share a room with his annoying cousin who makes fun of him for being born deaf in one ear even though his old house--the cottage he shared with his mom--is right down the road. Ben is drawn back to the cottage as strongly as he is to the wolves that chase him in his dreams. When a clue about the father he's never met points to New York City, Ben knows he has to follow it.In 1927, Rose is suffocating at home with her father in Hoboken, New Jersey. All Rose wants is to be able to go out by herself, like the other kids, and to watch Lillian Mayhew in silent films. When Rose learns that sound is coming to the movies and that Lillian Mayhew is starring in a play right across the river in New York City, how can she stay away? Will New York City reveal its secrets for Ben and Rose? Will either of them find what they're searching for in Wonderstruck (2011) by Brian Selznick?Wonderstruck is Selznick's second book told in words and pictures like his Caldecott winning The Invention of Hugo Cabret. In this book Ben's story in words intertwines in surprising ways with Rose's story told through pictures.Although the format is still brilliant and the story is once again clever and utterly original Wonderstruck lacks some of the verve and guileless charm of Hugo Cabret. The story is messier with a more immediate sense of loss and details that never tie together quite as neatly as they did in Selznick's earlier novel.*New York's American Museum of Natural History plays a prominent role in this story adding a nice to dimension to the story that will make it especially appealing for some readers** but Wonderstruck felt very busy as though it was tackling too much in one book. That is not to say that Brian Selznick is not a genius. He is--that fact is beyond debate. He combines words and pictures in a new way reinventing the whole idea of printed stories and blurring the line between prose fiction and picture books. His books are also always filled with historical details and facts that are well documented in a bibliography at the end of the story. Wonderstruck is a particularly find pick for anyone with an interest in New York City or museums.*I'm thinking particularly of Jamie's behavior in the book. Also the fact that Ben never felt much of a loss after the lightning strike. Did anyone else find that odd?**Like everyone who went to my grade school in 1993. Our building had asbestos so for a few months while it was being removed my entire school was bussed to the AMNH and we had classes there. We ate lunch under the whale every day. True story.Possible Pairings: The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler by E. L. Among Wolves (Wolves of Llisé, Book 1), by Nancy K. Wallace

Review 'I had a fantastic time with Among Wolves. I tore through the book wanting to discover what would happen to Devin, Armand, Marcus, Gaspard and the rest. Wallace has created an interesting world to set her story in and the political machinations make for a strong plot ... I very much enjoyed this first instalment in the Wolves of Llise series and I can't wait to rejoin our intrepid heroes to find out how their story continues' A Fantastical Librarian 'A love letter to the gatherers and protectors of stories and information, Wallace's Among Wolves is an accomplished political fantasy for a debut author. The slow-burn pacing and twenty-year-old characters make it a good choice for older readers, but Devin's naivete will also create an accessible entry into political intrigue for sophisticated younger readers' VOYA

The protagonist, Devin was both likable and a literary man after my own heart who is quickly in over his head, tangled in centuries old injustices. Learning but by bit as he did made the take move quickly and I was at the end and wishing for more before I knew it. Really looking forward to the next novel as this one ends in a startling cliffhanger.Highly recommend to any lover of epic fantasy who likes their main character to be smart and thoughtful rather than a sword swinging brute.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. must read for summer By cathren housley Nancy K. Wallace has made her life among books so it is not surprising that she chose an unusual ambition for the protagonist of her newest page-turner. Devin, a student of the Archives at the Académie, sets off on a journey with the burning desire to memorize the Chronicles of every province in the land. I was skeptical at first that a hero with such a literary bent could be interesting in any way, but from the first, this book drew me in. Secret death talismans left in the night! Clashing thunder, torrential rain and vicious wolves! Mixed in with the action are beautiful little nuggets of song and verse as Ms. Wallace creates her own chronicle of this amazing world. Buy it! Read it! Perfect for the summer…and you are going to want every book in the series because you can’t wait to see what happens next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must read! By Amazon Customer I first became familiar with Ms. Wallace as an author of children's books. While I enjoyed sharing those books with young family members, I was delighted to finally have a book for myself, and this one did not disappoint. This book has it all, fascinating characters, political intrigue, folklore, and a quest for the TRUTH. The unexpected cliffhanger leaves me longing to see what happens next, and who will be back in book two.

A great series By Cat Lady I was given chapters of this for an honest review, but to be honest I didn't read any until I paid for and got the complete set. Lisa Lace has created a wonderful world with characters you can relate to. The romance is great, but the plot and action involved in saving Earth's womens from being baby factories is incredible. I cannot wait for the next installment. There has to be one because the Earth and its citizens are still in danger. Try this and you will be hooked.

As usual the characters were awesome and the plot has thicken to safe earth. So I'm hoping there will be another book out, letting us know if we won back planet earth from the Surtu warriors. Highly recommended keep them coming.

By Jimmy Kung I have the privilege of working with Ivan in many occasions and his advise and systematic approach are powerful. This book is the foundation of how to build profitable businesses online. The examples and case studies in the book make it very easy to understand and follow. A 5-star book!

I set up a blog, spent months "guest posting" in order to generate traffic, and wasted thousands of dollars trying to figure out how to make money online. I literally spent YEARS trying to build a profitable online business only to fail miserably over and over again. It wasn't until I read this book that things really started to make sense to me. Some of the "aha" moments I experienced while reading Dot Com Profits include:- How to get people to pay me BEFORE I create a product - yes, really!- How to create automated marketing campaigns that make me money in my sleep- Why social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are possibly the greatest invention of modern-day marketing- How to get other people to promote my products (without being desperate and begging for their attention)Aside from the aforementioned insights, possibly the most beneficial part of this book was the total mindset shift that occurred while reading it.By the end of Dot Com Profits, I understood that I am in control of my destiny. I understood that I have the power to bet on myself and create a better life for my family. Because of this book, I understand that I have what it takes to create financial abundance and live life on my own terms... And that realization is priceless.

It guides you how to approach a web business. It gives you the tools and teaches you the knowledge on how to build successful web business even if you are not technical savvy. It is must read for those of us who is starting small. Very practical step by step guides on how and what you can outsource to save yourself valuable time. I also find the case-studies very valuable.

Cavnal stands on the brink of war. With the threat of insurrection from within and the threat of a world war from without, peace seems a fragile, distant dream. At the heart of the chaos stand Tarik—beloved Prince, rebel, traitor—and Hayli, the captured mage who knows too many secrets. With the world falling into chaos around them, Hayli must struggle to save her sanity and escape her captors, while Tarik must wrestle with his own inner prison before he forgets his reason for fighting. Some believe he is the key to defusing the hostilities before they begin. Some believe he is the only one who can save the mages from annihilation. Torn between the bonds of duty and blood, Tarik begins to understand that his choices are never as simple as he believes, and some questions have no clear answers. With alliances threatened, Hayli in the grips of the Science Ministry, and the line between loyalty and betrayal blurred, there is only one question that matters: If the price for peace is too high, is war the only option?

By Amazon Customer * I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This does not have an effect on my review.**This review also appears on my blog.***May contain spoilers if you haven't read The Madness ProjectThe madness turns dark as Tarik struggles to find his place in a world where things aren't as they seem, and Hayli struggles to hold on to the secrets and truths the Science Ministry tries to erase. There is seriously so much to this book. I almost don't know where to begin...so I'm gonna reference my first review as a starting point. The pacing: just as you think "maybe I can put this book down at the end of this chapter," you're proven wrong. There was never a good place to stop reading, the intrigue got twistier and turnier (you like that?) with every page. The characters: I love that the characters struggle so much with what's right, and what's wrong, and what are their actual thoughts anyways? The darkness they are in seems so relatable to me, even if I haven't been in their shoes. Even they don't know if they're good or bad, and I love that! There's also some more exploration of the secondary characters and they are important to the story. The setting: Even more exploration of Cavnal and mentions of other countries kept me interested in the setting. The steampunk remains an interesting element and I really loved it!In keeping with getting to know some of the secondary characters better, we also get to see some of the other magic they use and it's pretty cool and useful. Tarik has yet to completely understand his magic, and it's heartbreaking and heart-pounding and hopeful and scary and I could just go on and on.Spending time with the skitters and the mages means we get to enjoy the Cavnish slang some more!Repeated images and lines that are very powerful, to me at least.Despite what they've been through, the romance between Tarik and Hayli is beautiful, frightening, and dangerous. There's a lot of action in this book, and a lot of political players driving the events that are beyond the mages' control, including Tarik. The alternating POV between Tarik and Hayli continues to be strong and their voices distinct, their struggles pulling at your heart-strings and tear ducts. I love when an author pulls this off so effectively, and also still gives so much insight to the other characters that we don't see the thoughts of. The writing is just absolutely beautiful and mind-bending and I hope you give it a chance, it will not disappoint!I'm just dying over here knowing it'll probably be years before I know how the rest of the series goes!

By Elizabeth A Fiedler When you read one of the Madness Method books, you're right there, on the ground (or in the air ;)) with the characters; the realism is stunning. Bralick's conceptual magic is stunning, complex, and full of surprises, and makes this one of the most creative fantasy series out there. The tension between magic and science in this second book of the series is especially compelling, as are the character developments, as always.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Please, I want some more ... By Andrea Houtsch *I was graced to ARC review this book in exchange for an honest opinion**I own a physical copy of this book that was not purchased for me as a gift*There aren’t too many books out there that I wait most (im)patiently for. A Dark So Deep was one of them. The sequel to The Madness Project, Bralick’s opening gambit in a fusion of fantasy and steampunk, this follow-up brings readers right back to the brink of war in Brinmark, the capital city of Cavnal. Prince Tarik aka the mage called Shade stands in the middle of an ever deepening political intrigue and resulting chasm between the government and its peoples. Is he meant to start or stop a war? The question looms large throughout the book.I hadn’t realized just how Brinmark-starved I was until ADSD came out, nor just how much I missed Tarik, Hayli and the gang, the city, the magic, the steam and the mechanisms. Most of all I missed the language. Bralick’s mind is a genius, bringing world-building to a new imaginative high. The various accents and linguistic flourishes are all incredibly original, and invasive like a catchy commercial tune except I’m not singing some company’s jingle but falling into a vocal and mental syntax of another world entirely. It’s invasive in a good way, as a testament to Bralick’s storytelling and commitment to delivering a story that engages the brain wholly. Reading The Madness Project, and now A Dark So Deep, I was fully transported from reality to another world entirely as details most authors overlook have been well considered and worked into the storytelling and played upon with seemingly cunning ease. The book opens with immediate action and stays in a keyed up, page-turning plot pace throughout, throwing us right back in amongst the street rats and mages as they take refuge at an abandoned smelter at the edge of town, their previous home at the Hole forfeited as a loss after being raided at the end of The Madness Project. Hayli is still being held captive by Dr. Kippler, her mind deviously being toyed with as a new threat on the anti-mage front rears its duplicitous head in the persons of Andon Vrey and Miss Farrady. Tarik, ever torn between self and duty (perceived or assigned by blood lineage, though Cavnal or Istian is still up for grabs) is determined to rescue Hayli while the rest of his crew is distrustful of the girl they believe betrayed them to the ministry/crown.A good first chunk of the book is dedicated to Hayli’s rescue with Tarik continuing to explore his magic. However, the harder Tarik pushes the more his magic fractures causing him to eventually lose control over it entirely. He journeys deeper into the enigmas of what magic is to a mage just as Hayli’s brain is toyed with for the same purpose by forces that would understand such things for entirely different reasons. Bralick delivers a stunning work of mind-bending writing in giving us Hayli’s perspective as she endures lies and manipulation, so convincing that she had me guessing for a good long while, as unable to decipher between the truth and the lies as Hayli. That, for someone who prefers a high level of control in their mind, was a startlingly scary jaunt into what insanity must feel like.Correspondingly, I thought Andon Vrey and Miss Farrady were some of the most dastardly villains I’ve read yet. Even now the character Andon, his history and purpose and true involvement in the ministry plots remains a mystery that lingers, ever piquing the interest, Miss Farrady close on his heels. Bralick doesn’t give us much about them beyond the periphery of what Hayli and/or Tarik knows about them which titillates for future books and possible explanations.Even more, chock full of political intrigues, manipulations, revelations, and unexpected plot twists, A Dark So Deep not only follows The Madness Project, it gives us characters that have changed markedly over the course of the story, growing and developing as real people would if experiencing a serious set of dire, even lethal circumstances. Layers of delicious storytelling intertwine to weave a rich, intricate, continually expanding and deepening plot that is still beginning to unfold with a promise of at least three more books to follow in the series.I want to wrap Brinmark and its inhabitants around me like an insulating blanket, adopt the city slang patois and go running around in the dark with people who can walk through walls, read minds, influence emotions, change faces, start fires, teleport, heal, and a score of other unnamed abilities. I want to fight the good fight alongside these brave souls who fight not for some world-changing cause, but for the right to be themselves, and use the gifts they were born with. Against needless oppression born of greed, of power lust, of malicious intolerance. In today’s world fraught with similar narrow-minded perceptions, it’s Bralick’s brand of fiction that dares to draw striking, thought-provoking parallels.Fans of The Madness Project will not be disappointed with A Dark So Deep. I fell even more in love with this world and its peoples with this second volume in the series. My need for the third installment is as great as my anticipation of the next book in the Game of Thrones series, and that’s saying something.

(Neo Club Ediciones 2015)

Mark Hanna, the turn-of-the-century iron-and-coal-magnate-turned-operative who leveraged massive contributions from the robber barons, was famously quoted as saying: "There are two things that are important in politics. The first is money, and I can't remember what the second one is." To an extent that would have made Hanna blush, a series of developments capped by the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision effectively crowned a bunch of billionaires and their operatives the new kings of politics.

Big Money is a rollicking tour of a new political world dramatically reordered by ever-larger flows of cash. Ken Vogel has breezed into secret gatherings of big-spending Republicans and Democrats alike, from California poolsides to DC hotel bars, to brilliantly expose the way the mega-money men (and rather fewer women) are dominating the new political landscape.

Great wealth seems to attach itself to outsize characters. From the casino magnate Sheldon Adelson to the bubbling nouveau cowboy Foster Friess; from the Texas trial lawyer couple Amber and Steve Mostyn, to the micromanaging Hollywood executive Jeffrey Katzenberg, the multimillionaires and billionaires are swaggering up to the tables for the hottest new game in politics. The prize is American democracy, and the players' checks keep getting bigger.

Big Money: 2.5 Billion Dollars, One Suspicious Vehicle, and a Pimp--on the Trail of the Ultra-Rich Hijacking American Politics, by Kenneth P. Vogel

Review James Kwak, New York Times Book Review“What Vogel gives us is a detailed look at this new political landscape, where voracious money-sucking beasts mingle with megadonors hungry for behind-the-scenes access…Whether we are witnessing is a tectonic shift or a gradual evolution, ‘Big Money’ amply and colorfully makes the case that our elected leaders are increasingly dependent on a small number of seven-digit checks written by a few dozen members of the 0.01 percent, and therefore politics are becoming a type of thoroughbred horse racing.”Barton Swaim, Wall Street Journal“With ‘Big Money’—-which takes up the Kochs and other rich political contributors, including Sheldon Adelson, Rob McKay and liberal Texas lawyers Steve and Amber Mostyn—-Mr. Vogel has succeeded in doing what I, for one, didn't think possible. He has made the subject of money in politics entertaining—indeed, gripping. He does this by a combination of factual analysis, eyebrow-raising scoops and zany stories.”Michael Levin, Huffington Post“Vogel is a master of Politico's deliciously snarky political style and offers us glimpses of our elders and betters at their least dignified. …Vogel's Big Money is a must-read if you are concerned about politics and the future of this country.”Bethany McLean, Washington Post“[Vogel] knows the characters and gets the game. Want to understand Mitt Romney’s fundraising operation, how Jim Messina mobilized big donors for Obama’s 2012 campaign or the war chest that is already growing underneath Hillary Clinton? Vogel tells the stories. He also offers lots of detail on one of the most fascinating frenmities in modern right-wing politics: Karl Rove and the Koch brothers. And he offers great facts to bolster his overall claim...To his great credit, Vogel is also pretty even-handed...This is a book by an insider, for insiders.”Daniel Ben-Ami, Financial Times“Kenneth Vogel, chief investigative reporter for Politico, the news organisation, does an excellent job in untangling this story. Much of the book consists of reportage, with him trying to attend secretive meetings between ultra-wealthy donors and electoral candidates seeking funding. Often he was barred from entering or ejected after being identified as a journalist….He is commendably non-partisan in his reporting. Vogel sketches the shadowy fundraising worlds of both of the main parties. He also reports on the intense factional rivalry that sometimes exists within their respective camps.”Walter Shapiro, Brennan Center for Justice“Vogel's paparazzi tactics -- coupled with relentless traditional reporting -- have made Big Money the smartest and most revealing book chronicling the Super PAC era. Instead of predictable legal analysis and a mind-numbing march of statistics, Vogel tries to grasp what motivates the wealthy to invest so heavily in Super PACs. And his answers do not fit into the neat ideological cubbyholes of either campaign reformers or believers in the nonsensical, but powerful, doctrine that money equals free speech.”Chris Moody, Yahoo! News“Pull[s] back the curtain on some of the most important players... Through impressive sourcing, Vogel’s work...offers a peek into the secretive universe of megadonors in the post-Citizens United era.”The Economist's Democracy in America blog“A highly entertaining account of the adventures of billionaires in politics.”Joel Connelly, SeattlePI.com“Vogel manages to entertain while reporting on the politics of excess, even when things turn sinister… The most fascinating aspect of Vogel’s book is what manner of candidate big money culture produces, with a look back to 2012 and ahead at 2016... Buy Hillary’s book for your coffee table, but take 'Big Money' on vacation.”Jim Newell, Bookforum“Vogel’s decision to adopt a gonzo-style approach allows us to check out our new oligarchic digs as the contractors near completion. Throughout the book, Vogel shares versions of the same first-person story that never seems to lose its alternatingly comedic and terrifying edges: Here’s a closed-door donor conference I snuck into, and here’s what happened when they found me out.”Truthdig“Excellent and revealing.”Politix“Big Money is a fascinating, yet often depressing, tale about what—and who—really matter in American elections…Most books about campaign finance are dry tomes detailing the technicalities of political action committees (PACs), hard vs. soft money, and the like. It's enough to make a reader's eyes glaze over after the first chart or regression analysis. Big Money is instead an incisive, at-time hilarious, look at the very rich human beings who now dominate big-time political fundraising…To learn about who is likely to give and why, Kenneth P. Vogel's Big Money is a must-read.”

About the Author Kenneth P. Vogel covers the confluence of money, politics, and influence for Politico. Excellent descriptive reporting of an important problem By Dave Kuhlman It's ironic that one of the biggest changes in U.S. political system came during thetenure of the President Obama, who had sworn to defeat and push back against the use andinfluence of big money in our political campaigns. For me, that shows the power of theU.S. Supreme Court to radically change our political system, and to make it responsive tothe rich. The Citizens United decision and the rise of super PACs has increased the need for moreand bigger checks from donors. And, the need for that huge stream of money goes onthrough a long election cycle: through primaries, and through the general election, too.In some sense, we already knew this. We knew that there were huge amounts of money in ourpolitical system, both in campaign finance and in the lobbying that goes on duringCongress's work to create and vote on legislation. Vogel's value is to give us a readableand entertaining account of the inside of this process and also, depressingly, to show usjust how huge those sums are and how much influence they enable a small slice of the U.S.public to have and how corrupt the U.S. political system has become. It's not a pleasant picture. This new system and all the money in it has eroded the power of the official politicalparties. And, this is one part of "Big money" that I do not understand very well. Vogelclaims that because of the organization of the super PACs, (1) the function of ourpolitical parties has been privatized and (2) that now we have "shadow parties" composedof organizations of super PACs and the political operatives and consultants that createand manage them. This privatization of political parties and organizations is especiallytrue of the Tea Party, which several groups, the Koch brothers in particular, tried tofund and to capture for their own purposes. This is a topic that I'd love to heardiscussed in a college level political science class or seminar. One consequence of the erosion of the power of the major political parties in the U.S.(both the Republican and the Democratic parties) is that leaders in Congress, both in theSenate and in the House of Representatives, have lost much of their power to control theirmembers. And, that results in a dysfunctional Congress that refuses or that cannot act topass legislation and solve problems.Vogel reports in detail on the new industry and the teams of consultants and operativethat has grown to create and promote and manage this flood of cash. But, even he cannotsee inside many of these organizations, because of the lack of reporting requirements.Perhaps 'that' is why he calls them "shadow political parties", because they operate inthe dark, because they are opaque to us, and because they are the dark matter of ourpolitical system. The details that Vogel reports give a picture of the segments of this industry: (1) thefund raising and organizing that pumps super rich donors for money; (2) the operationalside, e.g. the spending of these huge amounts of money, especially during and on politicalcampaigns; and (3) the gate-keepers for the rich, i.e. those who screen the candidates inan attempt to ensure that the money given to or spent on a particular candidate willproduce the results that the donor wants to achieve. The candidates are very aware that they are being screened. They know that they are beingauditioned for their future performance. And, they are intensely conscious that if theydo not act accordingly while campaigning and when in office, that they will fore goimportant sources of funds. The outrageous thing is that, since the dominant and most successful strategy is to goafter only the super rich, our political system is becoming skewed so as to represent onlya very narrow segment of our population. The success rate that big money and super PACs have in getting their candidates elected isnot 100 per cent, which is not surprising, since we now have a system in which the richcompete against the rich. But, *some* well-funded candidate is going to win, and thatwinning candidate knows who paid to get him into office. That elected official knows thats/he "must dance with the one who brought them". And, remember that much of this hugepool of money is spent after the campaign: it is used to lobby officials after they getinto office. Either way, the influence in politics is predominantly that of the superrich, because that's where the money is.We have to remember that there are those who believe that we should have a right to spendunlimited amounts of money to influence politics. Perhaps they are aware of theconsequences; perhaps they are not. And, some of them justify, or at least rationalize itby claiming that it'd be alright if we had full disclosure. I question whether disclosurewould have much effect, since many of the donors are proud of their support. But, you'dhave to get that disclosure requirement written into law and enforced, which seems like anup-hill battle. One thing that Vogel's book exposes for us is one of the significant consequences that theconcentration of wealth in the U.S. is having. In effect, it shows the flaw in theargument that it's good for the rich to get richer, as long as everyone's lot is improvedat the same time. If the rich get *much* richer than everyone else, then, as Vogel shows, they get much more political power. And, it cannot be good for our country to have aclass of super rich who have much more political influence than everyone else. That's notdemocracy; that's plutocracy.A cautionary note -- The organization of the institutions that collect the donor's money, that pass along the money, and that spend that money (e.g on campaigning ads), isextremely complex. That means that there are very smart people behind it. Oneimplication of that, among others, is that counter-acting this movement, dealing with it,limiting it, whatever will be extremely difficult. For a Congress that cannot agree toanything except voting for President Obama or voting against him, that seems like anunlikely thing to ask for. There is, in "Big money", a sizable amount of reporting on the libertarian, lower-taxes,smaller government people and their attempt to produce the kind of government (or lack ofgovernment?) that they want. But, Vogel is balanced. He spends plenty of time on theleft wing, as well, both on the liberal, more progressive big donors and those who are inthe more business friendly segment of the left. And, by the way, there is also on theright, a segment that pushes more for a government that is favorable to business more thanfor less government. However, Vogel at one point admits (or claims) that if an individual or a company or anindustry, for that matter, wants more from the U.S. government, then the fiscally prudentthing to do is to spend their money on lobbying after the election rather than on theelection campaign. Vogel as much as admits that writing huge checks in support of acandidate's election campaign is as much about ego as it is about getting some kind ofdesired election results. It's also about perks and wanting to be stroked.Vogel's book is a very good attempt to provide detailed and well-organized view of one ofthe most important problems in U.S. politics, specifically the influence of money in ourpolitical system and the degree to which the money is provided by a narrow class of superrich. Vogel spends less time on analyzing the results of that influence. But, he does doan important service in providing the description and details from which that analysiscould start.A down-side to Vogel's writing is that he makes more of us aware of the extent to whichpolitics in the U.S. is an activity done by and for the super rich. It's no wonder thatvoter participation and citizen satisfaction with our government is so low. I worry thatthe kind of awareness that Vogel leads us to will make that even worse. And, it will nothelp that delegates to the political convention will see the perks and attention from thecandidates and their organizations going so much toward the super rich. Some of the consequences that Vogel mentions: (1) A shift toward privatization, in thiscase the privatization of the funding of campaigns and the influence exerted on governmentofficials. (2) An increasing balkanization and tribalism of voters and the officials theyelect. That fragmentation into smaller and more rigid factions makes it more difficultfor our government, especially the Federal government, to do any meaningful work on theproblems we need solved. (3) "A completely legal hijacking of American democracy by theultra-rich" (p. 247): those who can afford to buy our government will more and more beable do so.One look toward the future: Vogel suggests that the Clintons, both Bill and Hillary, havea huge ability to raise large sums of money. So, if you are aghast and sickened by thatamount of money chasing politics now, you are not going to want to watch the 2016campaign. And, one of *my* worries is that, if so much of that big donor money on theDemocratic/liberal side is vacuumed up into the race for the presidency, what will happento all the other races. We are already seeing so many state legislatures andgovernorships being captured through big funding on the right. Are we likely to see thatbecome even more skewed?

The average U.S. citizen no longer has a say in this country because a small handful of very rich and powerful men are running things. Kenneth Vogel documents this scary truth in his extremely well written, thought-provoking book. I only wish BIG MONEY were fiction. Knowing that these things are really going on is scarier than any seat-of-the-pants thriller I've ever read.

Immerman Particularly as the Republican Party pulls out all the stops to gain a majority in the Senate even as it seeks to hold off Tea Party insurgents, Kenneth Vogel's new book could not be more timely--nor more revealing and instructive. His research on not only the money pouring into PACs but also on the motives behind the pourers, his knack for storytelling and elegant prose, and his expertise and insight make this a must read-book for scholars, political junkies, and, most importantly, concerned citizens. This is the kind of journalism which we historians can really respect.
