Eight-year-old Mackenzie Goode has a sense of humor that always gets her into trouble.  But in third grade, she makes the ultimate promise to herself: no more mistakes. Mistakes are for babies and the last huge mistake she made, back in second grade, caused her a forever grounding and to see a look in her parents’ eyes she never wants to see again: disappointment. When the principal of the school visits Mac’s class as a mystery reader, Mackenzie’s will is tested. Instead of listening to the principal read, Mac sings her best friend, Cheese, a song she makes up about their friendship. Right in the middle of class!

Mac winds up in the worst sort of trouble!  The see-you-after-school kind of trouble. The grounded-for-life kind of trouble. The kind of trouble that is sure to create that look in her parents’ eyes she was trying so hard to avoid. Fixing this sort of mistake won’t be easy, but with the help of Cheese (and her parents) Mac tries.

Just finished Ken Pence ‘Connections’ and like his other stories found it fast paced and an easy read without a lot of fluff and feathers. The characters are interesting and the story make you care what happens do them. No spoiler here, but I did like the twist as I never saw it coming. Overall, this is a great adventure story, fast moving with interesting tech about man’s first venture into deep space. There is also the question of what might happen when we meet aliens, some more interesting than others on a more intimate level. As an aside, not being any sort of an editor myself, I skipped over the errors I found and concentrated on the story telling. Ken Pence did another excellent job of portraying men, good and bad, and how greed can motivate them to do their worst. Lastly, this is a story well worth reading." Rob Buckman

From the Author The story is about overcoming the inertia of bureaucracy and fighting to stay alive in an unforgiving universe. This is about a talented businessman who had to contend with endless attempts to steal his work. The locals try to arrest him for smuggling drugs. He encounters a world with different values -- different political and social norms and has to learn their language and culture.  He falls for a native which creates its own turmoil on his return to Earth (he does get back).Unfortunately his ship's drive signature allows other aliens to locate Earth...it starts getting complicated. Two quotes I think are appropriate:Mencken's Law-There is always and easy answer to every human problem - neat, plausible, and wrongand Clarke's Third Law- Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable fro magic

Scifi adventure and intrigue in Golden Era style, with modern tech By Amazon Customer Another fun-to-read adventure from the author of the excellent "Trade World" series. A clever plot has the inventor of Earths first Extrasolar FTL flight caught up on drug charges in another system. Lots of action, likable characters, and an interesting plot. Some grammatical errors, but they don't distract from the story. Reminiscent of golden era scifi with today's high tech. Recommended!

Life on the Mississippi, by Mark Twain

Review Memoir of the steamboat era on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War by Mark Twain, published in 1883. The book begins with a brief history of the river from its discovery by Hernando de Soto in 1541. Chapters 4-22 describe Twain's career as a Mississippi steamboat pilot, the fulfillment of a childhood dream. The second half of Life on the Mississippi tells of Twain's return, many years after, to travel the river from St. Louis to New Orleans. By then the competition from railroads had made steamboats passe, in spite of improvements in navigation and boat construction. Twain sees new, large cities on the river, and records his observations on greed, gullibility, tragedy, and bad architecture. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Publisher 8 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover Part travel book, part autobiography, and part social commentary, Life on the Mississippi is a memoir of the cub pilot's apprenticeship, a record of Twain's return to the river and to Hannibal as an adult, a meditation on the harsh vagaries of nature, and a study of the varied and sometimes violent activities engaged in by those who live on the river's shores.

Allen Greenbaum This book--at times disjointed, rambling, self-referential, and irreverent--is decades ahead of its time. It's an interdisciplinarian's dream as Twain takes on economics, geography, politics, ancient and contemporary history, and folklore with equal ease. Mostly though, one appreciates his knack for exaggeration, the tall tale, and the outright lie. It's a triumph of tone, as he lets you in on his wild wit, his keen observation, and his penchant for bending the truth without losing his credibility as a guide. The book's structure is also modern: He recounts his days as a paddlewheel steam boat "cub," piloting the hundreds of miles of the Mississippi before the Civil War, then, in Part 2, returns to retrace his paddleboat route. Although a few of his many digressions don't work (they sometimes sound formulaic or too detailed) most of the narrative is extremely entertaining. Twain seems caught between admiration and disdain for the "modern" age-but he also rejects over-sentimentality over the past. He writes with beauty and cynicism, verve and humor. Very highly recommended!

The attention to detail and description place you within the story. This book is actually, I believe, an autobiography of Mark Twain's (Samuel Clemmons) life as a young man piloting steamboats up and down the Mississippi River.Whether the man, Mark Twain, interests you or not, Life on the Mississippi, is an eye opening look at America in an earlier era.In my (humble) opinion this is Mark Twain's best work.

Smith Let me guess: your total exposure to Mark Twain came in high school, when you were forced to read about the antics of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, right? Well, now that you've reached adulthood, you should make time to read _Life on the Mississippi_. It's mandatory reading if you live in a state that borders the great river, anywhere from Minnesota down to Louisiana. It's mandatory reading if you have come to that point in life when you can suddenly appreciate American history and post-Civil War stories written by someone who lived through that time. Writing in the first half of the 1870s, Twain retraces the steps of his youth: the watery highway he knew when he trained to be a riverboat pilot nearly 20 years earlier. He speaks of how life _was_ along the river, and what life _became_. It's almost a "you can't go home again" experience for him, while the reader gets the benefit of discovering both time periods. I have two favorite parts that I share with others. Chapter IX includes a wonderful dissertation about how learning the navigational intricacies of the river caused Twain to lose the ability to see its natural beauty. And Chapter XLV includes an assessment of how the people of the North and the South reacted differently to the war experience. If I were a social studies teacher, I'd use that last passage in a unit on the reconstruction period. So put this title on your vacation reading list, and don't fret: the chapters are short and are many -- 60! -- but you can stop at any time, and the words go by fast. _Life on the Mississippi_ should make you forget all about any Twain trauma and report-writing you may have suffered as a teenager. By Allexandria Way Despite the plethora of travel guides available, I have found no one single travel guide that meets all my travel needs and interests. Some books provide in-depth cultural and historical information with great essays and photographs but have few recommendations for lodging, dining, and transportation. Others emphasize practical travel information but provide little background on culture and history. This book is ultimately the one you put together yourself from a variety of sources, based on your personal interests and travel preferences. It tells you how to get around and where to stay, and specializes in your main travel interest, such as art and history.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. worth recommending By Grace Rogers Useful! I gave this guide to my daughter and son-in-law who were staying in Lisbon for a week and they said it was indispensable. They used it for restaurants, sites, and shopping. She had brought other guides with her but none, she said, were as good as this one. Really worth recommending!

Delicious, deadly distraction... Jack Urquhart, over-qualified and underpaid researcher for Serafina's Psychic Investigations, has a big decision to make: stay in his fun, dead-end job, or grow up and join the family firm. On his way to give the family his decision, he's delighted to be side-tracked into the case of a rock singer's mother who vanished into thin air before several admittedly wasted witnesses, leaving behind only a half-made shoe. But Sinead's disappearance isn't the only weird happening at Roxy's housewarming party in the Scottish Highlands. There's satanic rock band, Grimm and the Reapers, plus ghosts, banging walls, a zombie dog, and, very probably, migrating leprechauns. Most worrying of all to Roxy, quiet, clever Jack excites her muse and all her senses as no other man ever has. Meanwhile, hedonistic rock star Mike Grimm is determined to get Roxy back in his bed by any means. It takes the combined might of Serafina's to defeat the forces haunting Roxy's house and find Sinead. And it takes the sexy, wise, turbulent Roxy to get under Jack's skin and make growing up and risking his heart not only necessary but fun.

Five stars for Serafina and the Leprechaun's Shoe, a hot, sexy, paranormal romp filled with ghosts, zombies, faeries, vampires, By Emsy Van Wyck Five stars for Serafina and the Leprechaun's Shoe, a hot, sexy, paranormal romp filled with ghosts, zombies, faeries, vampires, and scariest of all - hard rockers. What is the perfect Halloween read? Marie Treanor's Serafina's series without a doubt. Set in modern day Scotland and populated by psychics, witches, vampires, zombies, faeries, leprechauns, ghosts, ghosts, rockers (some of the scariest of the bunch), and more, this a fabulous series that is filled with a bit of mystery, suspense, the supernatural, humor, and a lot of hot, sexy romance. In fact, this is the perfect read for any paranormal romance fan, and I'd extend that to romance fans with a thing for sexy hunks in Scottish kilts and lovers of Scottish brogues.Luckily for me the third book in the series, Serafina and the Leprechaun's Shoe, was just released on 29 October so I didn't have to way to find out what was next for the folks at Serafina's. This time Roxy, Genesis Adam's rocker ex-girlfriend, is in trouble as her mother disappeared during a black mass led by some hard rockers who were her slightly less than welcome house guests. This time Jack is called upon to be the primary liaison with Roxy as he's heading home to his family's stately pile in the country, just 20 minutes from Roxy's home. Jack sees this assignment as a god send as he doesn't want to face the decision that he thinks his father may force upon him - to go into the family business and leave Serafina's for good.Well there was more than a black mass at work and Jack's talent for research leads them to think the disappearance of Roxy's mother may be involve the Tuatha Dé Danann (also known as faeries or possibly leprechauns). For reasons of balance, known only to the Tuatha, they leave a new, unworn, and unfinished shoe if they take a human into their world. All that was left in the room after her mother disappeared when Mike, the leader of the black sabbath, lead singer of the Grimm Reapers, and Roxy's former lover conducted the satanic ritual, was a chalk drawn pentagram, some blood, and the shoe.Once Jack begins his research it soon it is apparent that there is more than a little chemistry between Roxy and Jack, but will they act on it, or will Jack see any action on his part as a conflict of interest with a client? Will Serafina, Jilly, Melanie (their witch friend), Blair, and Jack be able to help find and return Roxy's mother? And what about those zombies? This was actually the perfect read for this Halloween day - as I sat with a cup of tea in hand, flipping pages frantically in my Kindle to keep up with the fast-paced action. While no trick or treaters have stopped by on this cold and rainy night, I've had my treat for the week with Marie Treanor's series. I look forward to the next book in the series that will focus on Blair's friend, and fellow vampire, Phil. You too should have a treat and read this five star series; order your e-books today from your favorite retailer. You'll fall in love with the gang from Serafina's as well as the hunky and oh, so sexy, heroes too. Hot romance, fabulous plots, humor, and great paranormal elements make this a series not to be missed.Fab Fantasy Fiction[...]I received a digital galley from the publisher through NetGalley for use in this review.

When who should arrive on a dark and stormy night? Mother! Roxie and her Mom have a fire all guns sort of relationship. Roxy is an earthy girl, her mother is an elegant (bitchy) woman...so it's easy to say "they clash"! One of the visiting "friends" is Roxy's ex boyfriend, a Goth rocker. Quite a mixture of opposites are together for this party...a fact which seems to anger Mama = the gangs getting wasted in the living room. While Roxy is out in the downpour to bring her mother's luggage in, she hears her Mom scream...she runs into the room the party is raging in and there, gathered around a pentagram drawn on the floor is her group of friends, wasted, drunk, and incoherent. A lone fairy style shoe and a spatter of blood, no Mom. The most she can get from anyone is the fact that Mama just....disappeared! To the rescue comes Jack Urquhart, who works at/for Serafina's Psychic Investigations...who better to track down her missing mother who seems to have been the victim in a black mass.I love the fact that a group of such different people come together to track down Roxy's Mom. Goth, earthy, psychic, and just plain people...you know: you and me! Haunting ghosts, witches and rockers, oh my! Get on board and track down a missing Mom, whether you want her hugs or not...the read is great!

Serafina and the Leprechaun's Shoe Review By Evampire The third book in the Serafina’s series is an intriguing and entertaining read full of fascinating paranormal characters including a satanic rock band, a zombie dog and quite possibly migrating leprechauns.Jack is the over-qualified and underpaid researcher for Sera’s investigations and now he has a decision to make, stay in his fun dead-end job or grow up and join the family firm. Roxy is a rock singer whose mother disappears into thin air in front of admittedly wasted witnesses and leaving behind only a half-made shoe. While the combined might of Serafina’s tackle the forces haunting Roxy’s house to find Sinead, Jack is finding his heart and growing up is not only necessary, but fun.The author brings this steady paced and smooth flowing plot to life with lots of suspense, action, romance and not only the compelling characters of the Serafina Psychic Investigations. The author paints vivid pictures of each scene and character that make the reader feel as if they are part of the story. The chemistry between Jack and Roxy burns up the pages and sex scenes singes the reader and leaves them tingling. The author makes it easily to relate to the characters by conveying their personalities and emotions with intense detail. The author weaves humor, romance, suspense and the paranormal together so well that the characters and the story are not only entertaining, they are believable. This world created by the author is a delightful and charming one with lots of spine tingling suspenseful tension that engage the reader’s imagination and captivate the senses. The reader finds themselves so caught up in the story that when they are disoriented when it ends and they have to re-join the real world. I don’t know if the author has another book planned in this series, but I certainly hope so.

Each book is gripping in its own way -- chilling to the bone at some points and giving you hope for humanity at others -- but th By Angela Chang I just finished this final book in the Seabound series. Each book is gripping in its own way -- chilling to the bone at some points and giving you hope for humanity at others -- but this book was my favorite. When you get to the very end of the series you can see how absolutely brilliant the story line and author are. Everyone needs to read these books!

A Fitting Conclusion to a Gripping Series By Marion Marchetto, author of The Bridgewater Chronicles Seafled is a fitting conclusion to this wonderful post-apocalyptic series. Our heroine, Esther, is faced with her greatest challenges yet as she and her shipmates set foot on dry land for the first time in seventeen years. Having received word of a settlement near Kansas City the landing party set out from the Catalina to make contact. Before they leave their water-based home, however, they receive word of a group of survivors living near a large lake in Mexico. Esther is led to believe that among the survivors there is her sister Naomi whom she thought long dead. Can Esther's mother also be among the survivors? She convinces the others to stop there first to see if her missing sibling is indeed alive. What Esther, her father, and the others find along the way is a prophetic vision of what can happen in a world unprepared for global disaster. And will she find the remainder of her family or is this a fool's errand.Once more author Jordan Rivet has given the reader much to digest. I was enthralled from page one to the very end. The characters remain true to their origins while exhibiting personal growth. The plot is full of twists and turns and there are a couple that took me completely by surprise. I enjoy that type of thing. And while there is so much to take in nothing seems out of place. The end left me wondering what would become of our heroine who by book's end is itching to get back to sea. I would love to see another book in the series that takes us out about five to ten years after the end of the series. Don't just read one book in this series - read them all!

The characters became like friends By Rwill161 After reading the first two books and the prequel, the characters in this book had all become like able in their own way. The characters all seemed to be pretty well developed throughout the series. The way the book and characters were written actually made me somewhat sad when the Catalina sunk in the end. I would definitely read more books by this author.

Bestselling and award-winning author, Sharon G. Flake, delivers a mystery set in the 1950s that eerily blends history, race, culture, and family.Octobia May is girl filled with questions. Her heart condition makes her special - and, some folks would argue, gives this ten-year-old powers that make her a "wise soul." Thank goodness for Auntie, who convinces Octobia's parents to let her live in her boarding house that is filled with old folks. That's when trouble, and excitement, and wonder begin. Auntie is non-traditional. She's unmarried and has plans to purchase other boarding homes and hotels. At a time when children, and especially girls, are "seen, not heard," Auntie allows Octobia May the freedom and expression of an adult. When Octobia starts to question the folks in her world, an adventure and a mystery unfold that beg some troubling questions: Who is black and who is "passing" for white? What happens when a vibrant African American community must face its own racism? And, perhaps most important: Do vampires really exist? In her most and probing novel yet, Sharon G. Flake takes us on a heart-pumping journey.

Unstoppable Octobia May, by Sharon Flake

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Octobia May has an untamed imagination. When she moves in with her Auntie Shuma, Octobia spends her days doing chores with her pretend servant friends, talking to the graves of the Before Girls at the nearby cemetery, and trying to unveil one of Auntie's boarders, Mr. Davenport, as the vampire he is. With the help of her friends, Jonah and Bessie, Octobia uncovers the dastardly deeds of Mr. Davenport, although the deeds have more to do with bank robbery and murder than with drinking blood. This story paints a realistic portrait of life for an African American girl in the 1950s, but the characterization and plot are marred by unclear writing. While the plot meanders, little information is offered about Octobia's (or any other character's) backstory, leaving readers ungrounded throughout the tale. Awkward quote attributions and murky action may have been meant to add to the mysterious nature of the plot, but fall short as one passage may take several examinations to comprehend. The way the adults, especially police officer O'Malley, in this story inexplicably flounder about with a cold-blooded murderer on the loose is unbelievable. Short chapters begin with a thick, black border, and a selected bibliography of relevant history ends the novel. While Octobia and other well-rounded characters were enjoyable and the overall plot was exciting, a less complicated writing style would have better highlighted the good this story offered.—Brittany Staszak, Glencoe Public Library, IL

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining. By Heidi Grange There were many things I liked about this book and a few things I did not. On the positive side, I really enjoyed Octobia May and her friend Jonah. Octobia May is a girl full of spunk and curiosity who relishes the freedom living with her aunt gives her after being smothered by her parents after nearly dying. Unfortunately, she tends to misuse her freedom to spy on one of her aunt's boarders, Mr. Davenport and she drags her friend Jonah into her misadventures. Her determination to prove Mr. Davenport is a vampire exasperates her aunt and everyone else around her. And her neighbors highly disapprove of her behavior as it is 1953 and she is expected to behave with more decorum. But slowly she starts to realize that what she thought was going on isn't what is going on at all and she better figure things out in a hurry before she finds herself losing all her new found freedom.I enjoyed the look at a time period I am not overly familiar with and what life was like for many African Americans. The twist that Flake adds to the story is an intriguing one and one that I don't think most middle grade readers will have spent much time pondering. Octobia May also finds herself confronting the whole 'don't rock the boat' ideology that many people find themselves sitting in as she listens to her aunt and others talk about changes that would like to see but who are unwilling for the most part to help seek those changes. The problems I had with the book revolve around the style of writing and the occasional use of dialect. At first I thought these were just errors but they kept happening so I then assumed that it was supposed to be a way of speaking, which I found a bit irritating. I have no idea how realistic this is for the time (1953) and place (African American community in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) but it rubbed me the wrong way a bit. Not enough to stop me from reading the book, but enough to make it a much less smooth read. The use of present tense didn't really bother me as it works to keep the reader knowing only what Octobia May knows which adds tension. But the short often incomplete sentences were sometimes hard to follow and I didn't always know who was talking or to whom.Overall, the story was enjoyable with plenty of action and tension, great characters, and an interesting setting. But the style and writing could have been smoother.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved the book By Lisa from Arkansas I loved the book. I was not sure if it was for children or adults. It is definitely a young adult book. The issues of race and gender are wonderfully addressed. Octobia is the narrator and her voice is delightful. Not a childish book at all.

I mean come on look at it. Then I want to go on and say that when you pick up this book to remember that it is a children's book.I read this book thinking that it was going to be about a young girl on a supernatural mystery thrill ride. While it was a book about a young girl and an adventure, the supernatural part was not all that present, and for spoiler reason I won't say why. I read this book for #MarchMysteryMadness, and I'm not disappointing with what I read, but to be honest with myself, due to the way that it was written, (I thought the sentence structure was very choppy) it took me about 100 pages into the book, and to get a hang of the rhythm of the book and how it would read from the mind of a little girl btw the ages of 7-10 in 1953.The book was filled with historical references (Thurgood Marshall, Korean War is mentioned and even goes into explaining how it was for a Negro soldier to be with the ranks of whites who didn't even want them around and belittle them, and they even mention Satchel Paige) and I think it can definitely will show you a small slice of what the world was like in 1953 in a small town, in a boarding house with two rambunctious kids running around during the summer time. It even touched on what it was like for women in those days, especially a black woman, owning her own business and wanting that business to grow, and to see so much hate for that (coming from both blacks and white), as if the only "real" role for women in that day, especially being black, was in a subservient manner or nothing more than a house wife waiting to cook, clean, or iron her husbands shirts. Was this book for me? No, but I don't regret reading it. It set out in my mind being one thing, but absolutely took the first right hand turn on the left and went in another direction. It showed a young girl with an unquestionable amount of curiosity in her, and the eagerness and strong will to keep on fighting, searching and asking questions of the world around her. And an never ending quest to be as free as she could. You go Octobia May, I see you girl.

SAVE 50% ON THE BESTSELLING SERIES!! 4 HUGE BOOKS FOR THE PRICE OF 2! The Hasea Chronicles Compilation features all the current books in the bestselling urban fantasy series - The Awakening, The Corruption, The Veil, as well as the prequel novel, Without A Heartbeat. It weighs in at a massive 667,000 words across the four novels. This is the cheapest way to buy the series and is ideal if you haven't started it yet - (or even if you have!) The Awakening: Alexander Eden is one unhappy teenager. A geeky, social pariah, he's the victim of constant bullying at school. His home life isn't much better with a stepfather who resents him and a half brother who is better than him at everything. But that all changes the day the mysterious and beautiful Gabriella De Luca walks into his life. Everyone wants to know her, to be with her. But she is interested in Alex. Because Alex is different. Soon afterwards he is thrown into a world he never thought possible. A world where he and others like him are the last line of defence. A world where an ancient unspeakable evil lurks. Evil which seeks to consume him.

The Corruption: It’s been six months since Alex and Gabriella stood against The Sorrow and won. The Veil still stands uncrossed, and with every passing day the possibility of finding the person stolen from Alex alive diminishes. But after an influx of new Awakenings, the Alliance is being stretched to breaking point. A melancholic Sophia is acting mysteriously and Sage Faru has set the formidable task of gathering a team of Guardians willing to enter Pandemonia. Meanwhile the looming threat of a new, stronger SOS hides in the shadows. But that is the least of Alex’s worries. Something is growing inside of him. Something dark and vengeful that whispers in the silence. Something that plagues his dreams with visions of a horrifying apocalypse. An apocalypse he will start. As Gabriella struggles to hold everything together and Alex struggles not to fall apart, one thing becomes clear. Before they can cross the Veil and stand against Hades, Alex must first defeat his greatest enemy. Himself.

The Veil: The Veil has finally been crossed. Alex, Gabriella and the Guardians of Orion have arrived in Fenodara, a beautiful Luminar city that acts as the last beacon of hope for a dying civilisation - but also a place that hides a dark secret. Never before have they been so close to the Ageless War and witnessed the way it corrupts not only the fading world, but also those who live there. Soon afterwards, a devastating attack on the city rips Orion apart. Broken and defeated, the Guardians are forced to separate and travel through the dark underbelly of Pandemonia in a desperate attempt to save those they love, and stop the forces of Hades before it is too late. However, the longer Alex spends in the dark and hostile world, the more a single fact becomes clear to him. This is a journey they might never return from.

Without A Heartbeat Not much is known about the mysterious Vampire Scarlett. Until now. The year is 1872. A darker, more unforgiving Alliance is working in the shadows, struggling to keep order on the streets of London. Meanwhile in Ireland, a young girl is about to take up a position as scullery maid in the sinister Oakley Manor. It is a decision that will alter her life forever and send her on a path of destruction and death. A path that leads right to the Alliance.

Review

“..a characteristically lively read….a good holiday read for any investor who suspects they may be stuck in their ways and in need of new insights” (Money Observer, July 2015)

From the Inside Flap

Mainstream investors are wrong more often than right. Most folks intuitively know this, and statistics and studies back it up. How can you buck the trend and be right more often than wrong?

Many believe doing the opposite of everyone else is the key to avoiding the herd's faulty investment decisions. Wall Street defines contrarian investing as betting the opposite of the crowd. Problem is, stocks often don't do the opposite of what most folks expect! Those who bet on the opposite, thinking it makes them a contrarian, behave as crowd-like as the crowd they try to game! If the herd thinks stocks will rise 10%, the anti-herders bet they'll fall—but markets could also skyrocket or zigzag sideways. In Beat the Crowd, bestselling author Ken Fisher shows you how to look beyond both crowds and find real contrarian opportunities that pay.

Being a contrarian simply means thinking independently. Not getting caught up in media hype and endless debate over whether Thing X is good or bad for stocks. Looking for things everyone misses. Thinking differently than the crowd, but not necessarily opposite! Beat the Crowd helps you filter the noise, test rules of thumb, shatter media myths and avoid common pitfalls.

If you're tired of media chatter and getting burned by consensus wisdom, this book is for you. With his signature style, Ken dispels common viewpoints and knocks age-old "rules" on their head. You'll learn how to separate what's important from what isn't, think outside the investing canon, find the "elephant in the room" and out-invest the herd.

From the Back Cover

A STRAIGHTFORWARD GUIDE TO THINK-FORYOURSELF INVESTING FROM NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR KEN FISHER

Are you tired of scouring financial headlines for actual wisdom—and coming up empty? Are you tired of nonstop media hype? Do you want to break free from the pack, think differently and outsmart the crowd? If so, this book is for you.

Contrarian investing isn't about being a bull when others are bearish, or vice versa. It's about independent thinking. Cutting through the hype to see what others don't see. Using simple logic to dispel media myths. Not being blinded by opinions, rules of thumb or consensus viewpoints. In Beat the Crowd you'll learn how to separate hype from reality to uncover lucrative tactics few others talk about.

Investing success isn't about perfection. It's about simply being right more often than not. Tuning out the noise and seeing the world differently than the masses will help you achieve this, and you don't need rigorous academic training to learn how. Beat the Crowd will teach you how, using the same methods Ken Fisher has employed over four decades of money management. Read this book to discover what moves markets, what doesn't, and where you can find real investment wisdom.

Spotting a Downturn in the Stock Market in Time By laurens van den muyzenberg If you are an active investor you will find this a fascinating and useful book. It teaches you how to spot when a bull market will become a bear market in time. That is get out before the decline. Fischer explains in great detail why the majority of investors gets out too early before the bull market has peaked or too late when a bull market has already for a considerable period changed to a bear market. He shows how taking the Leading Economic Indicator, the LEI, seriously is the right way.Important reasons why investors get the timing wrong are lack of discipline and ignorance in the sense of wrong concepts. Discipline refers especially to not selling unnecessarily. Shares go up and down. Most investors when a position in a portfolio goes down consider selling and replacing it by a winner. They consider a small loss far more important than a large gain. This is behavior based on the past of what has already happened. Fischer points out that what matters is what is expected to happen in the next 30 months.Another important factor is the media that write about the stock market. People are more interested in bad news than good news, and therefore the majority of articles are written about short-term disappointments and negative developments further in the future than 30 months. His definite view is that both short-term opinions and extrapolations of the past and past 30 months predictions are useless for predicting changes from bull to bear and vice versa.Fischer points to more than thirty widely held views he considers wrong. Some examples. A high Price Earnings ratio (PE) has no validity in predicting a better or worse development than a low PE. Small companies do not have a superior long-term performance than large ones. The increase from long-term interest rates does not lead to a change in a bull market. Wars do not influence the stock market other than of the magnitude such as World War II. Fisher presents straightforward statistical proofs. He puts these concepts to tests to determine if these widely held view correspond to what happened in reality. It is necessary to look at a complete picture; there are always examples where these factors appeared to be right, but they are far fewer than when proven wrong. For learning to spot in time approaching bears and bulls this book is first class, five stars.Fisher frequently states that he is not a sociologist but nevertheless holds very negative opinions about politicians. Many people will have different views. His negative views of political leaders are so strong that they even get in the way of his statistical proofs. For example he states on page 132 that in 1938 the GDP started to increase when Franklin Roosevelt was president and on page 143 that a bear market reigned from 1934 to 1942. The reality is that already in 1934, FDR's second year in office, GDP increased with 10.8%. He states about the ACA on page 152 that the uninsured were reduced with between 7 to 10 million and on page 154 only with 1.1% which is only 3.5 million or half.Fisher as a non-sociologist has very definite opinions on government. He sometimes creates the impression that the kind of policies that President Hoover pursued most of the time of non-interference in the economy is the only right policy and political action. I nevertheless also enjoyed this part as he does also make thought-provoking comments on political action.

I've dabbled on and off with investments over the years, with streaks of success and patches of rockiness. This book helped me to rethink some of my basic approaches to my portfolio, and in fact I'm probably going to look at my investments this weekend and make some changes based on what I've learned. In particular, I've found that I'm paying too much attention to short-term news and letting it make me either too excited or too scared. The funny thing is that I kind of already knew that about myself, and often times I would make a change knowing that I probably shouldn't. Reading through this book has affirmed that I should stick more to fundamentals and not worry so much about what I read in the paper or see on TV.The book itself is an easy read and only took me two days to finish. It's also written in a way that seems easy to understand even for someone who doesn't have a background in investing or know all the technical jargon. I also like that there are a lot of charts and other graphics to visualize the points being made. I always find it easier to see a concept displayed in a graph so that was a big help for me.Would definitely recommend this book for anyone managing their own investments or just interested in how it works.

Not one of Fishers best efforts By Pete Ken Fisher is a good writer I have read about 5 of his 10 previous books , plus his Forbes articles for many years. Phil Fischer ( his father ) was a brilliant thinker and investor , Ken has obviously got that gene. If you have read Fisher's stuff and other similar thinking investment writers , the book does not offer much that is new. If you are looking for a book that is going to be the definitive guide on how to find the next great investments this is not the book for you. ( I don't think that exists ).This book might help you become a better " critical thinker " regarding your investment decisions.I gave this only three stars , not because it is bad book or promotes investing philosophies that I do not agree with , but because I think Fisher could have written a better book, he should have stopped at 10.

The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is set in the beautiful Pacific Northwest cities of Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. When Universal made the first movie, filming was primarily done in Vancouver B.C., with secondary scenery filmed in Seattle, Washington. This book takes you to locations in all three cities, visiting sites from the books and movie filming. It leads you to real life and fictional places from the story, and their movie-magic stand-ins. It also includes links to Google Maps of the cities with marked locations. I hope you have a fun time visiting the places featured in the books, and seeing how they became new locations for the movie.

Thoughts that glow and words that burn By Elfa Sigvalda Even though I have read many books and short stories by great authors and is dazed, and full of admiration of their work, it happens once in a while, that a book or a story, that one has never heard mentioned goes right in to your heart and won't let go. That is what Mary Wilkins Freeman's stories did to me. I felt as if I had found a friend. There is such a pleasure to be found in her stories, the fluent and smooth style, easily understood by all, as well as a lesson in living your life at your own pace. She is so unaffected and natural in her storytelling, that these stories, which easily could have taken place, are sweet, tender, bitter and then full of resistence. Her character do not always behave. The stories are mostly about New England country women, for whom Freeman has obviouly a great sympathy for and she writes about them with respect and affection

I became hooked on her stories when I went back to school many years ago. It is difficult to find a book of just her works, but thankfully, Dover sees fit to publish this small tome with just Freeman's short stories. Entitled "The Revolt of Mother", it highlights one of Freeman's most hilarious short stories about a woman who is promised a larger home, only to become dismayed as her husband first builds his ultimtate barn. This book is inexpensive and a great way to become familiar with one of America's historical, overlooked woman authors.
