By rcassidy@earthlink.net (Richard Cassidy) This is a book that I first read about fifteen years ago, and the wonderful stories provide vivid examples for evaluating, or countering, "new" economic ideas with common sense historical, or allegorical, counterparts.Protectionists, beware - this book will change you forever.

16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Opponents of Logic Beware By Jonathan Brown Bastiat does some gentle and not so gentle poking fun at the Trade Luddites of his era. His defense of free trade is no less relevant today. In fact, with the nonsense we are hearing about trade from political and activist quarters - it is probably even more important today.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Classic Primer By Samuel J. Sharp This book is 150 years old, and yet many people do not understand its lessons even though it is easy and fun to read. It is fitting that my 1964 FEE edition of this book has an introduction by Henry Hazlitt. Hazlitt's "Economics in One Lesson" is more analytical and less humorous than "Economic Sophisms" but the two are classics in introductory economics.Bastiat's starting point is that desirable economic decisions come from viewing voluntary exchange through the consumer's eyes rather than through the producer's. For example, the "negative railway" highlights the fallacy of adding barriers to productivity in order to increase the costs of transportation. By breaking the tracks from France to Spain, the City of Orleans and its hotels, boatmen, and porters benefit since goods need to unloaded and moved to a new train and passengers are made to disembark. This looks good for producers but terrible for consumers. Especially since following this logic would mean that every city along the tracks should also tear down the rails! The genius of this book is that Bastiat does not need lengthy discussions of externalities and production frontiers to get his point across. Through the simple illustrations, the reader learns these concepts anyway even without being formally introduced to them.

From the award-winning author of The Face in the Frost comes the story of three brothers who rescue a talking gargoyle from their neighborhood junkyard Michael, David, and Alphonsus Jr. (aka Fonsy) are spending the summer trying to blow up the town dock and playing marathon Monopoly games. On the brink of death-by-boredom, they head to the local dump in search of treasures—such as oil cans that Michael can use to build a submarine. But what they find is far from garbage. Staring out at them, between two black stovepipes, is the head of a grinning stone gargoyle with shifty eyes and a long snout. He demands that the brothers take him home to live with them, so the boys wrap him in blankets and cart him back in a wagon. At the house, the gargoyle regales them with vivid tales of his exploits in faraway times and places. He even comes up with endlessly inventive ways of terrorizing the boys’ irritatingly dull neighbors. Finally, this is a summer worth writing home about. The Gargoyle in the Dump is a recently discovered, never-before-published story. Also included are two pages of the author’s original typed manuscript and an introduction from his long-time literary agent, Richard Curtis. John Bellairs is beloved as a master of Gothic young adult novels and fantasies. His series about the adventures of Lewis Barnavelt and his uncle Jonathan, which includes The House with a Clock in Its Walls, is a classic. He also wrote a series of novels featuring the character Johnny Dixon. Among the titles in that series are The Curse of the Blue Figurine; The Mummy, the Will, and the Crypt; and The Spell of the Sorcerer’s Skull. His stand-alone novel The Face in the Frost is also regarded as a fantasy classic, and among his earlier works are St. Fidgeta and Other Parodies and The Pedant and the Shuffly. Bellairs was a prolific writer, publishing more than a dozen novels before his untimely death in 1991.

Chambers The three brothers did exactly what any other boys would have done when they found an old stone gargoyle in the town dump - they took it home with them. After all, it wasn't just any old gargoyle. This one talked and had magical powers, and it breathed flame like a dragon. But the boys couldn't imagine at the time just how much fun the gargoyle could be, or that it would share their dislike of the next-door neighbors. It's a short but fun read about three boys and their exciting summer. The story shows the originality and vivid writing that brought author John Bellairs so many awards.Note: The Kindle Single edition included photocopies of the first two pages of the author's original typewritten manuscript of the story.

You can see Bellairs touches all through the story. No real Bellairs fan should pass it up. My only complaint is that I did not get the page of manuscript that was promised.

While exploring the dump, they hear a voice. By following the voice they discover a gargoyle that can talk and breathe fire! The boys take the gargoyle home and become fast friends. He regales them with stories of his life experiences. Will the gargoyle stay with the boys or go back to the dump again? This is an enjoyable and fun short story to read. If this is your first expose to this author, do read his other stories. You will enjoy them!Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book free from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I was not obliged to write a favorable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.

The Stranger's Farewell is a very old story, one that has entertained people all over the world for hundreds of years. A stranger visits a young couple – he has been traveling for many days – and asks for a glass of water and a place to rest. The young couple make him welcome and invite the stranger into their home to share their meal. As we know, small actions sometimes have large consequences, and this one did. As the stranger is leaving to go on his way, he says, "May the next thing you do last until you say, 'Enough'." These parting words reward their generosity in an amazing way. News of the young couple's changed status travels fast and prompts a greedy merchant to seek out the stranger in the hope of gaining a similar reward for himself. But, of course, the result is very different. This story can teach us – in a very assessable way – something about the nature of giving and receiving. This tale is set here in Afghanistan where the story is known by many people. This setting effectively introduces children to a culture and people who may be unfamiliar to them. The story is retold here or young people by the Afghan storyteller and teacher Palwasha Bazger Salam and beautifully illustrated by Marie Lafrance.

Insights on the Development of Exceptional Leaders By K Danielson makes a case that introspection, awareness, and the ability to navigates uncertainty create extraordinary leaders like Dee Hock, the CEO who created VISA into an international medium of exchange. What's unusual is Danielson's demonstration that a diverse demographic group of individuals who have trained for more than 120 hours in three residency weeks at the Monroe Institute demonstrate characteristics of known extraordinary leaders, with the data to back it up.I particularily enjoyed Danielson's personal reflections which draw heavily on myth and literature. Highly unusual andimportant insights for 21st century business leaders.

ANOMALOUS THRUST (Sliding Void book 4) 'Anomalous Thrust' is the 4th book in Sliding Void series. It's a completely stand-alone adventure, not directly linked to the first three books (although 'Anomalous Thrust' is set chronologically a year after the end of the previous books). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DESCRIPTION Captain Lana Fiveworlds might be flying with the same motley crew of misfits, but her problems are all-new. Lana believes that a demanding and difficult client on board her beloved starship - the Gravity Rose - is the sum of her woes. But that was until she has to emergency ditch inside a star system which holds a full range of deadly secrets. There are the murderous intentions of the local government with its slave-owning aristocracy to contend with, not to mention the ruthless rebels trying to overthrow the regime. And then there's the moon-sized unknown alien vessel that jumps into the system every few centuries, along with the chance to claim untold riches. Or the chance to die, well, really quite horribly. With Calder, Zeno, Skrat, Polter and the chief still helping Lana, there's the smallest of chances the crew might survive. But as every spacer knows, it's not where you jump into hyperspace that counts. It's only ever where you end up! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ABOUT THE AUTHOR Stephen Hunt is the creator of the much-loved 'Far-called' fantasy series (Gollancz/Hachette), as well as the 'Jackelian' series, published across the world via HarperCollins alongside their other fantasy authors, George R.R. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Enjoyable Read By Wolf McTavish Anomalous Thrust is the 4th book in the Sliding Void series and like most of Stephen Hunt's novels I found it to be an easy and enjoyable read. There wasn't any plot point which distracted me from the narrative, which make it difficult to review. I read it, and had fun doing so.After completing the third novella and I left the Sliding Void universe I was left with a sneaking suspicion that there was more to the ship, The Gravity Rose, than we were being shown in the story. There were also a lot of loose end concerning the ships, and her captain Lana Fiveworlds, background. A sort of larger backstory lurking in the shadows waiting to emerge.Anomalous Thrust answers some of these suspicions and raise even more questions and in doing so we are presented with a compelling and enjoyable story, as well.I really enjoy Sci-Fi books where the author has created a history in which to place their story. Stephen Hunt has done this nicely without getting bogged down in a three chapter long exposition of the universe's history. In this universe events that have happened in the past are still affecting present day events and consequently affecting our characters. When exposition of the past is needed to be explained we have Calder, a new crew member who was a prince on a Medieval ice age planet (similar to life north of The Wall on Westeros). If an event happens that requires some history, he asks what's happening and we get a brief explanation without stopping the action. Which I think is a nice use of characters.I wont give you a blow by blow retell of the story because I want you to enjoy the story for yourselves, however the basic outline is that a catastrophic system failure on The Gravity Rose causes them to look for the nearest port to effect repairs. The only one available is owned by a fascist dictator who is enslaving the local sentient population. There's no money to complete the repairs so 'favours' need to be called in. Throw in some Solar Sail racing and a 'Rendezvous with Rama' and you have an enjoyable read.I'm looking for to the next book in the Sliding Void Series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great stuff! By Todd Rathier Anomalous Thrust is an excellent action packed space yarn. Whether you are following the series or just picked it up standalone, you will be able to follow along with no problem at all.Without giving anything away, the plot initially has the spaceship Gravity Rose on a simple delivery mission. It then gets far more complicated from there. The rag tag crew on the hacked together Gravity Rose is full of surprises that never fail to entertain me. The AI units are wonderful and are every bit as entertaining as the main characters they interact with. The captain and crew of the Gravity Rose remind me somewhat of my favorite show "Firefly" but only in flavor. The story has a steady fast pace with timely plot twists and turns that all link together smoothly but still leaves some mystery hanging about.I’m looking forward to the next installment to see where it goes. Well done Mr. Hunt!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great read By Gregg C I really did like the book . I was glad to see the series come back , it does not pick up where the old series stopped but has a few of the same people in it with a few different little twists. Lana is back and as always things never seem to go her way . The book had a good storyline and plenty of action and as always I don't know what to say and what not to say without giving too much away but I think when you start reading it you will enjoy it as much as I did and the ending will leave you wanting more . Especially this ending . Going to be a good series and can't wait for the next one. Great job Mr. Hunt.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great book about space By Alex Lang It’s a great book. Even more, it is one of the greatest books about space I’ve ever read! The author shows us the infinity of the Universe and how small we are on its background. As for me I call “The Island of Hope” “a book about space Mowgly”. Two children lost their parents. Now they have to survive in cruel conditions of war. There is no place in the whole world for them, so they begin to search it. Will they succeed? Before you find an answer, you will watch the real kaleidoscope of events. Just open “The Island of Hope” and you will enjoy it.

A picture is worth a thousand words -- and with a unique photographic format, a stunning original voice, and a provocative portrayal of bullying, Young Man with Camera is a book to get people talking. T-- is used to getting grief. He gets it from his mom, who blames herself for his accident years earlier. He gets it from Mr. Lam, who suspects every kid of stealing from his shop. Worst of all, he gets it from Joined at the Hip, a trio of bullies so vicious that they leave T-- terrified of even using his entire name. But T-- has his own strength too: his camera, which captures the unique way he sees the world. His pictures connect him to Ms. Karamath, the kind librarian at school; his friend Sean, whose passion for mysteries is matched only by his love for his dog; and especially Lucy, a homeless woman who shares his admiration for the photographer Diane Arbus. When Lucy is attacked by Joined at the Hip, T-- documents the assault on film. But the bullies know he has the photographs, and their anger could be deadly. What's the right thing for T-- to do? Do pictures ever tell the whole truth? And what if the truth isn't always the right answer?

Young Man with Camera, by Emil Sher

From School Library Journal Gr 6 Up—A gripping look at bullying, its outcomes, and the reasons why some kids can't "just say no." Seventh grader T—was the victim of a terrible accident as a kid, and one side of his face is disfigured with scars. The bullying—spearheaded by Ryan and carried out by his joined-at-the-hip gang of toadies—has continued ever since. Ryan has the personal charm to cover up his sociopathic tendencies, so no one believes T—'s complaints. When the protagonist befriends homeless Lucy and documents bits of her life with his ever-present camera, his tormentors' focus shifts to include her. An ugly exchange escalates into a murderous assault, leaving T—with a horrifying dilemma: Should he come forward, make the evildoers pay, and live with the almost-certainty they'll go after his best friend? Or should he keep silent? This is a high-intensity, hard-hitting novel—one that could be the source of significant discussion among readers. Unfortunately, there's not a single adult in the title character's life who can get beneath his silent exterior and help him—although a librarian gets close—and the two-dimensional flatness of the adults in the story (and even of his nemesis) is the one jarring note in an otherwise well-executed work. VERDICT Although most teens will be unlikely to pick up this title on their own, it's worthy of hand-selling and should be a staple in English classes and anti-bullying curricula.—Elizabeth Friend, Wester Middle School, TX

Review

Early Praise for Young Man With Camera:

"This is what T- does with his camera: He makes the world larger, deeper, more beautiful and complex. Against this, the evil he confronts can only make the world smaller and uglier. And Young Man With Camera does the same; it reminds us that Art always confronts, and sometimes confounds, Darkness. This is a novel about the beauty that lies within, the darkness that comes from without, and the grace and nobility of a boy who sees it all through his lens. You will grow larger from having read this book." -Gary D. Schmidt, Newbery Honor-winning author of The Wednesday Wars and Orbiting Jupiter

"A brilliantly original voice and a gut-twisting story come together for a dazzling jewel of a book. Truly outstanding." -Kevin Brooks, author of Candy and The Bunker Diary

Praise for Young Man With Camera:

"Told through prose and photographs, this is a brutal heartbreak of a novel, deservedly just nominated for a Governor-General's Award. One of the few books for this generation that will stick with them into adulthood.." - Globe and Mail

About the Author Emil Sher taught at a high school in rural Botswana before returning to Montreal to pursue creative writing. While his plays have been widely produced in schools, Young Man with Camera will be his first novel. He currently lives in Toronto with his family.

Unexpected read By Gaby at Starting Fresh blog When I started Young Man with Camera, I expected it to be an adventure story of a young boy in a city, taking pictures, capturing events, making friends, etc.But it turns out that T doesn't have very many friends, except for Sean and his dog. T is marked by large burns on this head and it's made him the target of bullies as well as less popular in middle school. We find that T's learned to deal with his lack of friends and the distrust that some teachers have of him. T also finds ways to cope with the disappointment of his parents. His camera and the photos help him make sense of the world and express his conflicting emotions. Certainly, he doesn't rely on words or talking. On particularly bad days, he just wants Silence with his best friend Sean. T's story is sad enough but he makes friends with a homeless woman named Lucy. He understands something about her and shares his photos. They hang out, but attract the attention and bullying of Ryan and his crew.Ryan's found ways to make it seem as though T-- does all sorts of bad things and plants evidence that teachers find each time incriminating T. T's never tried or learned to speak up to refute any of these "incidents" so when Ryan's tricks get out of hand, T doesn't know what to do. Whether to confront Ryan and reveal the truth or to stay silent and protect his friend Sean.Young Man with Camera tells the story of friendships, loyalty, disappointment, bullying and isolation. It's a bit frustrating because I keep wanting T to just speak up, but part of the power of the story is learning what it might be like to be the sort of person that T is.

Perry tracks down a second 50,000 year-old Lemurian generation ship that has crashed on a uncharted planet. Energy beings, alien ruins and a mystery,. What more could a fun cosmic pulp give you. Read it.

The second installment continues with a first contact saga operating on many levels By Takeyabue This part of the Lemuria mini-series is a first contact novel. The ancient Lemurians find themselves in first contact with a planetary environment after a lifetime aboard a contained steel ship. Perry and friends find themselves in first contact with a large group of genetic ancestors and an alien species new, and utterly alien, to them. In addition, there is the mystery of an old long deserted base, the difficult interaction between Akonian and Terran, and, finally, the surprise appearance of one of my.favorite characters in the long-running Perry Rhodan saga, a certain Haluter named....Highly recommended for those long familiar with Perry Rhodan and those just wanting a good first contact novel operating on several levels!
