A girl’s dark destiny could cause the unraveling of the world in this “shattering and transcendent” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) novel from the author of A Creature of Moonlight.Heed this warning, mortal: stay far away from the three sister Fates. For if they come to love you, they might bring about the end of the world… Chloe is the youngest. Hers are the fingers that choose the wool, that shape the thread, that begin it. The sun smiles upon her. Men love her without knowing who she is. She has lived forever and will live forever more. She and her sisters have been on their isolated Greek island for longer than any mortal can remember. They spin, measure, and slice the countless golden threads of human life. They are the three Fates, and they have stayed separate for good reason: it is dangerous for them to become involved with the humans whose lives they shape. So when a beautiful girl named Aglaia shows up on their doorstep, Chloe tries to make sure her sisters don’t become attached. But in seeking to protect them, Chloe discovers the dark power of Aglaia’s destiny. As her path unwinds, the three Fates find themselves pulled inextricably along—toward mortal pain, and mortal love, and a fate that could unravel the world.

The Shadow Behind the Stars, by Rebecca Hahn

From School Library Journal Gr 7 Up—Chloe is the youngest of the three sisters who spin the world. Her fingers choose the wool, spin the thread, and begin each life. Motherly Serena guides the thread and marks the end. Xinot, the oldest, slices each thread with a snap of her shears. When a girl appears at their door asking to understand her disastrous fate, the sisters have nothing to say. Serena casts a spell meant to ease the girl's pain before sending her away. Instead, the spell begins a series of events that will bring about the end of the world. This sophomore novel from Hahn takes readers on a strange and wondrous course through questions of fate and free will as the narrator and her sisters embark on a journey with the potential to change the very foundation of existence. Written in second person as Chloe tells her story to us mere mortals, this evocative and descriptive novel is timeless beyond the assumed ancient Greek setting. A unique voice and mythology-tinged writing give this quiet book some punch and offer a few surprising revelations for the three sisters. Hahn expertly tackles the power of belief and choice in this thoughtful and introspective work. Strong characters and intricate prose help to mitigate a plot that is often slow and narrowly focused with insights about the human condition that may seem obvious to older readers. VERDICT This unique and often literary yarn will appeal to those interested in mythology, fate, and philosophy.—Emma Carbone, Brooklyn Public Library

Review * "From the author of the radiant A Creature of Moonlight (2014), a heartbreaking fantasy tackles life's big questions.... Chloe's narrative voice is piercing and poetic, encompassing both youthful heedlessness and eternal power, rich in minute observations, delicate metaphors, restrained accountings of atrocities, and reluctant wisdom. Alongside her sisters, she comes to sing mortals "a tune of cataclysms, of breaking points, of beautiful horrors"—but the final aching chord of helpless love becomes the unexpected triumphant resolution to every impossible question. Shattering and transcendent." (Kirkus Reviews, June 2015, STARRED REVIEW)“A strange and wondrous course through questions of fate and free will . . . Hahn expertly tackles the power of belief and choice in this thoughtful and introspective work.” (School Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW July 2015)“Awell-orchestrated tale of mythical beauty, painful remembrance, and fatefulconsequences…readers will soon be entranced by her ethereal prose and will befervently turning the pages to understand the mystery surrounding Aglaia’sarrival.” (VOYA)* “This lyrical, thoughtful novel . . . is well worth the measured pace; it will likely linger with philosophical readers, particularly those familiar with the mythological Fates, long after they’ve finished.” (BCCB, starred review)

About the Author Rebecca Hahn grew up in Iowa, attended college in Minnesota, and soon afterward moved to New York City, where she worked in book publishing and wrote her first novel, A Creature of Moonlight, on the side. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a young adult mythology book unlike any other mythology story I have read in the young adult world By Michelle@Book Briefs The Shadow Behind the Stars by Rebecca Hahn is a young adult mythology book unlike any other mythology story I have read in the young adult world. It read more like a traditional Greek tale. A fictionalized play of a Greek tragedy, and there was just something about that the academic and history nerd inside of me ate right up. I loved that this story was set in ancient Greece and that it had all the sorrowful tragic elements of traditional Greek myths. Of course, that meant for a more violent and slower pace of story telling, which to me equates to a more mature target audience. I think adults will love this story perhaps more than young adults. The Shadow Behind the Stars is told from the point of view of the Fates. I have not read too many books from the three fate sisters point of view, so that was really interesting to me. It was a kinder and gentler fate than I was used to from tales. They knew they had to carry out their job, but they could just not help but get swept up in poor Aglaia‘s story and destiny. I really liked the dichotomy of voices in the this story. The book is told from the point of view of one of the Fates, but on the other hand, it is also very much Aglaia‘s tale. The interplay between narrator voice and main character played out really nicely. I am very impressed with Rebecca Hahn’s writing. The Shadow Behind the Stars is not one of those books that you can gobble up in a quick afternoon. It has a slower pace and is meant to be savored. I don’t often get to read books like this because of my limited reading time, I am drawn more towards instant gratification stories, but there is something really satisfying about digging into a book that forces you to slow down and really digest each page. If you are a fan of traditional greek mythology, you should really check out The Shadow Behind the Stars. It is a beautiful (and yes a little sad) tale. I will tell you one thing, I can’t wait to read another book by Rebecca Hahn.*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest thoughts. I was not compensated for my review.

Review for The Shadow behind the Stars by Rebecca Hahn By Alyssa ***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***The Shadow Behind the Stars by Rebecca HahnPublisher: Atheneum Books for Young ReadersPublication Date: September 1, 2015Rating: 3 starsSource: eARC from EdelweissSummary (from Goodreads):A girl’s dark destiny could cause the unraveling of the world in this spellbinding novel from the author of A Creature of Moonlight, which Kirkus Reviews called “cumulatively stunning” in a starred review.Heed this warning, mortal: stay far away from the three sister Fates. For if they come to love you, they might bring about the end of the world…Chloe is the youngest. Hers are the fingers that choose the wool, that shape the thread, that begin it. But in seeking to protect them, Chloe discovers the dark power of Aglaia’s destiny. As her path unwinds, the three Fates find themselves pulled inextricably along—toward mortal pain, and mortal love, and a fate that could unravel the world. What I Liked:This book was... strange. It's one of those mystical, magical-realism-esque novels that don't seem to be going anywhere. The plot of this book didn't make sense to me, the story didn't make sense, and yet I couldn't pull myself away. I think I enjoyed the book, though I can't see myself going through it again, and I'm not sure I'd recommend it.The Three Fates - Chloe, Serena, and Xinot - do not interact with mortals, do not live among mortal, do not interfere in the lives of mortals. They spin, mark, and cut threads. Chloe is the youngest, the one who looks like a young woman, the one whom men find irresistible. Serena is the middle-aged one, and she is the mothering type, though she will never have children of her own. Xinot is the elderly sister, the oldest one, the most intuitive. When Aglaia washes up on the sisters' island, Serena can't turn her away. But Aglaia has a dark future, and the Fates are now involved. This book is told from Chloe's first-person point-of-view, although it's also told in second person, kind of. Chloe is telling "you mortals" a story, a story of why the Fates shouldn't interfere in the lives of humans. Chloe is NOT happy with Aglaia living with them. Serena is the one that allows it, and Xinot lets it be. Chloe has a strong will and is a bit more temperamental than the other two sisters. While it might seem like she doesn't care about Aglaia at first, she grows to care about her, just like the other sisters.Aglaia's village was raided by soldiers, everyone murdered, the village burned. Aglaia survived, but the raiders wanted it so. Aglaia is filled with pain, and Serena puts a spell on her to erase her memories. But it doesn't erase the pain. Aglaia has something huge that will change the world, and the Fates are powerless to stop it. They are so powerful, yet so powerless. The story is very short, yet very dense. If you skim something or flip too quickly, you might miss something vital. It is consuming, the kind of book that confuses the heck out of you, yet you can't look away. The writing is beautiful, lyrical, yet I was totally lost at times, but I couldn't not keep reading. The world is a fantasy, Greek-influenced one, but I couldn't get a firm grasp on it.While I'm giving this book three stars, I liked the book. The story is SO intriguing (and I can't say much specifically because it gets spoilery really quickly), and the ending is strange but satisfying. I think. If I'm understand it correctly. What I Did Not Like:But therein lies my problem. This book is one of those gorgeously written book that are confusing as a Rubik's Cube (hush, Rubik's Cube solvers). A lot of fantasy novels that take on a magical realism feel are like this. They are lovely and flowy and pretty to read... but confusing. As a story, this one didn't have much structure, and didn't make sense. How in the world did Aglaia end up by the Fates? Especially when we find out that the Fates are on an island which other humans live on (this isn't quite a spoiler, I promise). Why didn't she end up there? Why didn't the Fates throw her out? Why did they follow her, why did they stay? I can't say more without spoiling things, but trust me, things don't add up in this book. There is little plot structure. It's like someone is telling a tale but veers off in one direction and attempts to come back to the tale. Or something. The climax rolls around and then I'm even more confused. The ending is also confusing, but I think I get it and I think I like it? I think there is some heavy symbolism, or maybe I'm reading into it too much. In any case, I think the ending could have been more clear. The whole story, really. This book is REALLY short. There could easily have been another 100-125 pages in this book. Maybe that would have fleshed out the plot and padded the worldbuilding. One thing that kind of bothered me - it is very OBVIOUSLY stated, both in the synopsis and in the book, that Chloe is the one that men fall for. Yet, there is NO romance in this book. None. Not even for Aglaia and some guy, or anyone. But especially not for Chloe. I was expecting it, because the author had a line in the beginning stating how men fell for Chloe all the time. Hello, foreshadowing? Likely unintentional, which is annoying!Would I Recommend It:I actually don't think I would recommend this book. It's interesting, but probably not worth the read. Initially, I was REALLY excited about it! Now I'm happy I read it, but not really singing its praises. If you have it, read it. If not, keep moving along!Rating:3 stars. Not terrible, but not amazing! But hey, it was super short, which almost makes me think I should reread it... almost. I can't quite wrap my head around this one.

I fell in love with Hahn’s writing when I read her other book A Creature of Moonlight. Again her writing is so beautiful, mystical, lyrical, Hahn is just a master at words and painting a picture so distinct and unique. This story is short but very deep which I loved. Plus I am just a sucker for mythology of just about any kind. I will ALWAYS read a book with mythology all wrapped in it.Here she has spun a very unique story of the Fates. Where they are sisters yet they are not. They are bound to each other. The three Fates are three very different women who never interact with mortals. They do what they are known for: the spinning and cutting of threads to the human life. You’ve got Xinot who is the “elderly sister” or the oldest one, she is has a gift for discernment. Then we’ve got Serena who is “middle-aged” with the more mothering nature. Then we have Chloe-the youngest who is so beautiful that men want her.I really liked that this author humanized them. Instead of having the Fates old, disgusting, and creepy. We have very gentle, strong, real characters that are relatable. This story is told in the voice of Chloe-the youngest. It’s a story of a girl named Aglaia washes up in the hands of the fate sisters; and whose life has been utterly destroyed.Aglaia’s village was destroyed by soldiers who murdered and burned her village, yet left her alive-on purpose. She is filled with so much pain that one of the sisters tries to ease her memories by putting a spell on her. However Aglaia has a dark future that the Fates are powerless to stop but become involved.Overall I loved this book it was amazing just like her first and I would recommend it to anyone!Sexual Content: mildViolence: moderate (talk of the pain from a murdered and destroyed village)Drugs/Alcohol: mild/noneLanguage: mild/none

Cinderella's Stepsister and the Big Bad Wolf, by Lorraine Carey

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—In Carey's fractured fairy tale, Cinderella is mean and lazy. She goes to the grand ball as a mouse (punishment by her fairy godmother for bad manners), and it's her kindhearted stepsister, Gertie Ugly, who marries Prince Charming after they meet at the dance. Although the story omits many aspects of Disney's Cinderella, Blanco sneaks in a few familiar scenes in his digital illustrations. Children will also enjoy seeing how Blanco changes the appearances of the Big Bad Wolf, the Wicked Queen, and the evil witches: characters who try to teach Gertie how to act more like an "Ugly." It's easy to make this book interactive by asking questions about the character crossovers or by introducing children to additional versions of the stories, which in this case include the fairy tales "Hansel and Gretel," "Snow White," and "Little Red Riding Hood." VERDICT A decidedly different take on the familiar tale.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

Review This amusing fairy tale mashup reveals that one of Cinderella’s stepsisters, Gertie, was actually the kind, helpful one...Blanco’s digital illustrations set the story in what appears to be 1930s England while infusing Gertie’s quest with a gentle humor to match Carey’s narration.—Publishers Weekly

About the Author Lorraine Carey spent her early years digging for fairies in her backyard and hoping upon hope that she'd wake up on Christmas morning to find a horse behind the couch. Lorraine Carey now lives in London with her son, Kassius; their cat, Merlin; and an amazingly invincible fish named Bob.Migy Blanco was born in Salford, England, studied in London, and then spent ten years working in advertising and editorial illustration. After marrying, he moved to Buenos Aires, where he developed a children’s-book style that is bold, magical, and eye-catching. Very similar to the original story of Cinderella By BrittyMama I am a huge fan of the retelling of classic fairy tales from another character's perspective so I was very excited to read this book. It looked to be a fun mashup of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. Maybe Little Red was actually one of the step-sisters? Maybe the Fairy Godmother was actually bad and the step-sister was looking out for Cinderella the whole time? Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. We are introduced to the third Ugly stepsister, Gertie, and find out that she isn't very ugly after all. In fact, she is portrayed very much like the Cinderella we all know (except Cinderella is mean here). Gertie is super sweet and pretty, does all the housework, is shunned by her family, and isn't allowed to go to the ball until at the last minute she is helped by the Fairy Godmother. Sound familiar? There were a couple of nice cameos from some other fairy tale favorites (Hansel and Gretel and Snow White) but for the most part, it was too similar to the original Cinderella story.

However, the classic tale gets turned around and mixed up with some other fairy tales in CINDERELLA'S STEPSISTER AND THE BIG BAD WOLF. In this story, Cinderella is not very nice and she has not two, but three stepsisters. The other two everyone has heard of before, but the third stepsister is a girl named Gertie. Gertie is not like the rest of her Ugly family (their last name really is Ugly). She's sweet, nice, and kind. She wants desperately to go to the Prince's ball, but her mother won't let her unless she learns to be as wicked and mean as the rest of the family. So, Gertie is sent from one fairy tale villain to the next in an attempt to learn how to be mean. However, Gertie just can't seem to be mean and she seems to have no way to get to the ball. Help comes in an unexpected companion. CINDERELLA'S STEPSISTER AND THE BIG BAD WOLF has several cameos from other fairy tale characters. The story isn't as in-depth as other mashups and some readers might not like that. However, it's cute and has a certain charm and most children will probably enjoy reading it (or having it read to them).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a little unpolished, but good for fans of steampunk By J. Fitzgerald This was written by Robert Brown of the band Abney Park in Gig Harbor, Washington state. [...] It is the third book of a trilogy called The Airship Pirate Chronicles. It comes after The Wrath of Fate and Retrograde. The trilogy is a fantasy backstory to the origins of the band and "Captain" Roberts family. I guess you might call it a fantasy/fiction biography. It ties a lot of his songs into the steampunk story of his group of musicians turned sky pirates. It tells of how they became pirates fighting for good, how they met his children, time travel snafus, and adventures with the Neo-Bedouin Gypsies, automaton robots, and crazy environmental dictators. Each book is written more from the point of view of one character than the others - the First from the captain, the second from the crew member Lilith, and the third from his 2 little girls perspectives. There are other views, but it always come back to their main story and how all three intertwine. You can feel the Capt'n working out his thoughts on life, the world, society, government, family, friends, and inevitable hardship as the books go along. Ultimately his message is a positive and liberal one full of forgiveness, world peace, learning from your mistakes, and empathy for others.I enjoyed the books, but they have a lot of issues. Most annoying are the huge number of typos, and grammar/spelling mistakes. The books definitely needed to be edited more before being self published. They are all pretty short with large font, but they are also illustrated with nice pen and ink sketches by JP Valencantos Anfusco. (they recently released a coloring book of the images too!) The fantasy world the captain paints is a wonderful one, and it all ties together nicely. I enjoyed them, but don't recommend them to anyone that's not already a fan of the band or at least the Steampunk genre. They are written to be kid friendly (just like most of the bands shows) because of the Captains two young daughters, but I was surprised to find a few pages near the end of this book filled with profanity - the f-word mostly but a few others - 7 or 8 times. There are also references to prostitution, polygamy, rape, murder, social oppression, and unethical scientific experiments. I certainly don't care - such is life - but some parents might want to read them in advance if they plan on sharing them with their children. This third book, I felt, should have been the second book. It filled in lots of details that happened during that time in the progression, and ended rather un-spectacularly, compared to the ending of Retrograde. Then again this third book could probably be put at the beginning of the second book, and Retrograde could have been split up into a new third book with a little more added on to tie up loose ends. Toyshop was only 172 pages, compared with 310 in Retrograde. Retrograde ends, in my opinion, a little un-satisfactorily. Perhaps he means to have left it open ended for future songs and adventures, but I kept expecting them to fix all the time mistakes they'd caused and end up back home as a band with secret stories that never officially happened floating in their heads and coming out in their music. Still a happy ending is a good one, and I enjoyed getting some insight into my favorite groups leader - his life and songs. It's wonderful reading the lyrics put in where they match up with the stories, and written out like that they feel more like poetry than music.I half recommend this series and I half do not - you decide!

When New York Times Bestselling writer Tad Williams described Peter S. Beagle as a “bandit prince out to steal reader's hearts” he spoke a truth that’s been evident for more than 50 years. But during the first four decades of his career Beagle was known mainly as a novelist and screenwriter. Every short fiction piece he wrote was recognized as a classic—“Come Lady Death,” “Lila and the Werewolf,” “Professor Gottesman and the Indian Rhinoceros,” and the tales that made up his collection THE MAGICIAN OF KARAKOSK—but there were only a handful. That changed in 2001, when Beagle turned his attention to short fiction in earnest, producing a stunning array of more than 40 new and award-winning stories during the next decade. In MIRROR KINGDOMS: THE BEST OF PETER S. BEAGLE, acclaimed genre editor Jonathan Strahan collects his favorite Beagle stories—over 200,000 words worth—in a single volume ranging across 47 years of brilliantly diverse creativity. It's a book which shows, more than any other, just how successful this bandit prince from the Bronx streets has been, and exactly why the World Fantasy Association honored him with their Lifetime Achievement Award. Featuring “Two Hearts,” the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning follow up to THE LAST UNICORN, the WSFA Small Press Award winner “El Regalo,” plus wonderful stories like the surrealist “The Last and Only,” the haunting “The Rabbi s Hobby,” and others. CONTENTS Professor Gottesman and the Indian Rhinoceros (1994) The Last and Only, or, Mr. Moscowitz Becomes French (2007) Come Lady Death (1962) El Regalo (2005) Julie's Unicorn (1996) The Last Song of Sirit Byar (1995) Lila the Werewolf (1969) What Tune the Enchantress Plays (2007) Uncle Chaim and Aunt Rifke and the Angel (2007) Salt Wine (2006) Two Hearts (2004) Giant Bones (1996) King Pelles the Sure (2007) Vanishing (2009) The Tale of Junko and Sayuri (2008) The Rock in the Park (2008) We Never Talk About My Brother (2007) The Rabbi's Hobby (2008) —Peter S. Beagle was born in 1939 and raised in the Bronx, just a few blocks from Woodlawn Cemetery, the inspiration for his first novel, A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE. Today, thanks to classic works such as THE LAST UNICORN, TAMSIN, and THE INNKEEPER'S SONG, he is acknowledged as America's greatest living fantasy author; and his dazzling abilities with language, characters, and magical storytelling have earned him many millions of fans around the world. In addition to stories and novels Beagle has written numerous teleplays and screenplays, including the animated versions of THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE LAST UNICORN, plus the fan-favorite “Sarek” episode of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. His nonfiction book I SEE BY MY OUTFIT, which recounts a 1963 journey across America on motor scooter, is considered a classic of American travel writing; and he is also a gifted poet, lyricist, and singer-songwriter. He has won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and Mythopoeic Awards, along with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Association, and also France's prestigious Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire.

Mirror Kingdoms: The Best of Peter S. Beagle, by Peter S. Beagle

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Scientists may call the rhinoceros a unicorn, but only Beagle can make it feel like one. Facing reality—often a magical reality hidden under mundane trappings—is the key to understanding magical transformations and repairing damage, saving one time-traveling brother trapped in Thursday (El Regalo) and thwarting another who is the angel of death (We Never Talk about My Brother). Prosaic rabbis must deal with angels (Uncle Chaim and Aunt Rifke and the Angel) and ghosts (The Rabbi's Hobby) while supernatural daughters cope with mother issues (Lila the Werewolf, What Tune the Enchantress Plays). Two Hearts, the coda to The Last Unicorn, is a moving ode to heroism. Beagle plays on the heartstrings like a master musician, and this definitive collection, a magnificent grand tour of his many created worlds, will thrill his legions of fans. (Mar.) From Booklist Because Beagle, not editor Strahan, introduces this hefty tome, the reasons why these 18 tales are Beagle’s best are never stated. How irksome for Beaglephiles, who know that he doesn’t write mediocre, much less bad, stories. Five previous collections contribute all but four stories here, so maybe a reviewer will be most helpful characterizing the erstwhile fugitives. “What Tune the Enchantress Plays” is the irritable dramatic monologue, delivered to a demon, of a woman tricked out of the love of her life and her subsequent vengeance; it’s utterly convincing, for Beagle catches precisely the voice of just such a not-in-this-world character. “Vanishing” is a ghost story about atonement and, just possibly, redemptive change by a man who let a moment of horror at the Berlin wall in 1963 ruin his life. The autobiographically tinted “The Rock in the Park” and “The Rabbi’s Hobby” are about, respectively, a boy’s run-ins with centaurs (in Central Park, yet) and the ghost of someone who never lived. They’re superb and in superb company. --Ray Olson

There is some early work here but the lion share is made up by Beagle's excellent burst of short fiction in the last few years. Whereas his novel output the last 12 years or so has been non-existent, short stories is the area where he has become one of the masters of the SFF genre. In his introduction Beagle notes that he often has several drafts even for these novelettes ( nearly all stories here are some 20-30 pages), sometimes doing a story 7 times. He does this because he feels there is very little room for mistakes in a shorter work as opposed to a novel, which may well be true. The stories feel expertly crafted as a result. The subjects vary greatly but the style and depth of intelligence is always there. The only downside of this book is that there is no original material in it, and secondly that many ( but not all) of the stories here have already been collected in the Tachyon collections "The Line Between" and "We never talk about my brother". This made me go back and forth several times before I decided to purchase this otherwise awesome and very well made book ( it's pricy but lovingly produced with excellent paper and a good cover, shame about the type used for the table of contents btw). I would have liked the collection to be even bigger, containing some new materials. As an aside, there's new Beagle stories in "Beastly Bride" "Warriors" "Full Moon City" and "Eclipse 3" for those interested. Another niggle I have is that the book is supposedly edited by Jonathan Strahan but he does not even contribute a preface/introduction or afterword to this book. Some sort of essay on Beagle's work by Strahan would surely have been of added value to this collection.Summing up, a landmark collection of Beagle stories, many of which will be new to readers who do not already have two Tachyon collections listed above, and as such well worth buying now that you still can, also as a collector's item because the book is already out of print with the publisher. The collection could have been made perfect with some extra essays from Beagle experts or the editor, and some previously unpublished stories.

Many are a little long for that term, and I find that I am not properly appreciative if I think of them as short stories. Most are more like modern fairy tales than anything else. The writing style is loose and dreamy in some, tight and present in others. I must admit, I didn't feel in the mood to read a whole book of them this week, though that's a fault in me, not in the writing. I'm glad I stuck with it, though, as the stories saved for late in the book are phenomenal.Lets get the main thing out of the way first: what did I think of "Two Hearts", the "coda" to The Last Unicorn? Mixed, honestly. The tone is fine, the voice is great, but I'm just not sure of the point, either of the story itself or the reason for writing it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. There were certain stories that I really liked. "Salt Wine", about the dangers of taking favors from merpeople, was pretty fantastic. In "El Regalo", a girl has to rescue her brother, trapped in last Thursday. "The Tale of Junko and Sayuri" is a hauntingly evocative story grounded in Japanese myth. "Giant Bones" is one of his more well known short pieces, and its descriptions of giant life are pretty amazing. My favorites were "The Rock in The Park" and "We Never Talk About My Brother". In the first one, a young boy with a gift for words and his childhood friend with a gift for pictures meet some unusual travelers in a park in the Bronx. The end of that one is absolutely beautiful. In "We Never Talk About My Brother", Jacob relates the story of his brother the famous anchorman, who has a troubling secret power.I don't want to say more, because discovering the richness of each world is a large part of the enjoyment of these stories. I didn't enjoy each and every one, but some people can write a whole novel with a less fully imagined world than is implied in most of these stories. Many do.Most if not all of these stories have been printed before in other volumes, which is good, because Mirror Kingdoms is already out of print.

To be able to create such wonder and magic? If I hadn't been a fan of Peter S Beagle for lo these many years, I wouldn't believe it possible. But it is. This author is capable of captivating a reading audience like nobody else. Mirror Kingdom is filled with such marvelous stories. This is a treasure trove of imaginative, spell-binding reading. You know the old question, if you had to pick a dozen books to be with you if you were cast away on some island? Well, this would be one of them that would absolutely have to go with me. If you, too, are a fan of Peter S. Beagle, you will understand. If you're not yet one, you will be after you read this book. More entertainment between the covers of a book I haven't discovered so far, and I read a LOT!

I never wanted to put them down By Anna (Enchanted by YA) This is a series where it takes a long time for you to get your head around the intricate plot, and then leaves you with a million questions even after you’ve finished the very last page! Understandable in the first book, and then continuing because it keeps your interest at its peak, but my problem came in the last book. Simply because it turned everything on its head leaving you to try and fit all the pieces back together, something I’m not sure I’ve actually done correctly…I sped through these books in a matter of days; the action meant I never wanted to put them down. However it also caused me to overlook subtle plot suspicions, so my advice to you (apart from picking it up obviously): is read and take in every word. You don’t want to miss anything. There are so many characters introduced throughout - all with their own agendas, so likelihood is they’re going to clash. A lot. And result in some major fights… Figuring out who to trust was a test not just for the characters, but the reader, because it wasn’t always clear as day. It was hard of course for the mass-murdering psychopaths to be inconspicuous, but like I said: everyone has motives. It’s exceptionally hard to go into detail without spoiling something so I’m ending my review here; keeping it short and sweet!Posted on: http://enchantedbyya.blogspot.co.uk/

I'm so glad to read a series where characters become friends before advancing to a physical relationship. THANK YOU MS. WRIGHT! The books each resolve nicely but leave you wanting to know more. The line of Seven and the prophets and shadows... are revealed in bits and pieces and even when the books were done I wasn't sure I had the whole story. I wouldn't mind another!PARENTAL RATINGSProfanity - sparse, some religious exclamationsViolence - nothing too graphic, most characters are self healing and the main characters aren't about killingSex - there's no reference to sex, a couple of extended kissing scenes but all clothes remain in tact, good relationship developmentSubstance abuse - noneBook ONE:Aern meets Emily under deadly circumstances. She saves him in order to find her sister but gets more than she expects in the bargain. Forced to put her hands in the life of a stranger that may or may not have kidnapped her sister, she has no choice but to go with him. As the story unfolds Aern discovers that Emily is more than just human and may be the key to their survival.Book TWO:Brittany become more and more crucial to the survival of the world and needs all the help she can get, especially from Logan, the man in her visions. Their relationship unfolds as they race to save their people from the corrupt Morgan.Book THREE:As powers continue to grow, the history continues to confuse and the romance continues to satisfy. This is a great, but hopefully not final, installment in the Descendants series. Ms. Wright leaves room for more. (Please!) However, even if this is the end it's believable the together they will figure everything out. I mean, they've survived to this point, right?

In addition, several typographical errors through the chapter as well. This seems to me more like a teen trying to pull off being an adult writer.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Welcome to Haven. By Rosemary Hughes Supplied in exchange for an honest review, I found this short story complete and a wonder tale. Katie's car stalls on railway tracks, and she cannot budge it. A stranger appears, but he is completely naked. With little effort he moves the car, and then gets it running again.A handshake sends strange feelings between the two. Fate has more in stall for them, but you need to read the story for the full impact.

Fated was waving the threads and soon she found her destiny in the form of a shifter bear named Paul. There was an immediate attraction between the two of them and she knew she can trust him but still, she had to follow her mother instructions and leave. Paul had been waiting for his mate for too long and when at last Fate did his job he was in his knees and he knew how to follow the instructions and what he had to do to bring the beast out. Interesting and lovely short story. Liked the development and the characters

Satisfying, though short on Old Guy By David Harriss A fun tale about the end of human life on Earth's surface, the death of hundreds of billions, and the importance of reading.Old Guy guest stars in this one, but no more than a third is in his distinctive voice. The rest is centered on several human characters that play important roles in the liberation of the species of Earth. The result is a lot of fun, and a heavy handed, unsubtle political message. And a truly exquisite piece of torture-vengeance.If you enjoyed any of the previous Old Guy work then this will appeal. It is all one story, but entertaining.

By m raymer Latest in the series is really good, but should be read after reading at least some of the earlier ones to set the stage. Regarding neoliberals (for those who know what we're talking about), from a recent interview with Noam Chomsky:Williams: What are your opinions on the surprising progress of Donald Trump? Could it be explained by a climate of fear?Chomsky: Fear, along with the breakdown of society during the neoliberal period. People feel isolated, helpless, victim of powerful forces that they do not understand and cannot influence.

There is a true story line rather than unrelated OG adventures, which, even though enjoyable, were becoming a bit repetitive, especially if you are not a weapon addict. The Librarians remind me a bit of Anathem from Neal Stephenson. The Neoliberals are as evil as required (for a good laugh see cracked.com video on How Ayn Rand and L. Ron Hubbard Came Up With Their Big Ideas). Waiting for the next one and would really like to know where the humans went ...

She lives in Bluebell Wood and has a lot of friends including squirrels, mice, badgers, moles and some starlings. Skipping along to deliver the invitations to her birthday, suddenly she is filled with sadness when she realizes she has never had a hug. Some of her friends try to explain the reason they can't hug her. She does realize that due to her 'prickly' skin that she could hurt someone if they got too close.Sophie gets the best birthday present from the animals in the forest. A really nice ending for an upset hedgehog. The message is clear in this short book written for ages 4 - 8... 'hugs are needed to feel close' to another. The drawings are in black and white and are well done.Highly recommended.

The book is lacking in so many areas: the illustrations are amateur, the layout is sloppy (there's little regard for how the comic sans font plays against the background) and the punctuation is a nightmare. But worst of all, both the English and Dutch texts are rife with errors and awkward constructions. Do not waste your money like we did.

They have collectively put their magic together (light, dark and Zoe, who's both) and have defeated all that they can. This 3rd installment of the Witches/Warlock series has taken me on such a roller coaster of emotions that I really didn't see what was coming. I'm really glad that one character in particular made a brief, but lasting appearance. Zoe has some very hard decisions, trust issues and obstacles in her path in ROAR. Will she overcome them? Or has she succumed to the dark side or will the light reign? Will she survive or give in to everything? This is so worth the read and such a fluid transition from Speak and Hush. I couldn't put it down. This book is worth more than 5 stars in my opinion. I'm emotionally attached to the characters in this book and you will be too....

Only they find someone they're supposed trust is working against their orders. If that's enough, the added love triangle is making home difficult. But love comes in all ways and Zoe will find out who returns her love.Side note, the bartender had a cute name... what was it? :)Great read, R. xxxx

I didn't even want to stop reading this book even though I'm on a romantic weekend getaway with my husband (seriously, I'm in a hotel room writing this review)! Zoe and her cast of characters are just as awesome as ever. I am hoping this isn't the last we hear from Zoe!!
