Not All Exorcists are Equal....One is Marked When defrocked ex-priest, Jimmy Holiday, agrees to help an old friend with his sick daughter, he doesn’t expect the horrors that await him. Blackmoor, his friend’s new residence, rests upon the outskirts of the town of Sorrow’s Point. The mansion’s history of magic, mayhem, and death makes it almost a living thing – a haunted mansion straight out of a Stephen King novel. Jimmy must decide if the young girl, Lucy, is only ill, or if the haunting of the house and her apparent possession are real. After the house appears to affect him as well with colors of magic dancing before his eyes, rooms warded by a witch, and a ring of power in his voice, Jimmy is met by a transient who tells him he has “the Mark.” Whatever being “marked” means, Jimmy doesn’t care. All he wants to do is help Lucy. But, helping Lucy means performing an exorcism.

Review "SORROW'S POINT was probably one of the most terrifying books I've ever read. The book is a page-turner, but definitely not for the faint of heart. There were a few chilling scenes that will leave me with nightmares for weeks." - Heather Wood, Book Chatter "SORROW'S POINT by Danielle DeVor is a new take on The Exorcist and for me a much better read. The author has invoked pure spine-tingling flesh-crawling terror from every chilling page." - Fantasy and Horror Author, Simon Okill "Move over, Stephen King. Danielle DeVor is on her way!" - YA Paranormal Romance Author, Katie O'Sullivan "Defrocked priest Jimmy Holiday's narrative voice is a strong blend of insightful, self-deprecating, and sincere." - Publisher's Weekly

About the Author Named one of the Examiner's 2014 Women in Horror: 93 Horror Authors You Need to Read Right Now, Danielle DeVor has been spinning the spider webs, or rather, the keyboard for more frights and oddities. She spent her early years fantasizing about vampires and watching "Salem's Lot" far too many times. When not writing and reading about weird things, you will find her hanging out at the nearest coffee shop, enjoying a mocha frappuccino. http://www.danielledevor.com

By Louann Carroll Right off we are introduced to a policeman who witnesses the bloody stump of a neck and head lying in the sink of Blackmoor mansion. Then a man seated at the kitchen table munching on a human body. From there we fast forward and meet Jimmy Holliday, a defrocked priest who in no way wants to help his long lost buddy, Will Anderson. Will appears on Jimmy's doorstep a shadow of his former self. At least the one Jimmy remembers. Why? His six year old daughter Lucy is possessed and he is hoping Jimmy will help him.A reluctant, but agreeable Jimmy is hauled back to Blackmoor, an estate the Andersons bought that came complete with a violent history. A former owner killed and dismembered his wife and child and ate them in the kitchen. The house itself is filled with mahogany which if you've ever been in a house with that much wood will give you the shivers just thinking about it. Seriously. I've been in them. Right away you can smell old wood, paste wax inside cracks and crevices though no one has touched them in years. You can see the yellow light of antique light bulbs making shadowy corners that allow demons to lurk unseen within the house's depths. The possessed child, Lucy, daughter of Will and Tor, is just that and Jimmy must find a way to help her and the family. He must also recognize and accept the love he feels for Tabby, a witch he met when he was still a priest and who was the reason he became defrocked in the first place. She joins him in the fight to save Lucy. Lucy is able to communicate with Jimmy soul to soul and what a spiritual fight there is. No spoilers here. I found the use of wiccan magic and priestly reverence entirely compatible. The writing is clear, the characters, believable, except I did get a little upset at Jimmy's reluctance at first, but who could blame him. It is usual for someone to appear out of nowhere and demand an exorcism. I felt sorry for Will but for his wife, Tor, she just seemed so unreachable, almost dead herself which is exactly how the author wanted her portrayed in the beginning.Sorrow's Point gave me the shivers like Pet Cemetery and The Shining both my all time favorite horror novels. Sorrow's Point is perfect for a rainy day read. It was also interesting to learn how to go about requesting an exorcism from the Church, how logical and fanatical you have to be about details in the middle of a possession. Especially one with a child. Lucy did bring up memories of The Exorcist. Unavoidable when you are dealing with a female child and possession but it was OK to be reminded. Lucy changes in the novel which steers you away from The Exorcist. Asmodeus, as the demon, was enough to scare you half to death. I don't read too many exorcist books because they scare me. Just like this one did.The ending leads you straight into the next book in the series. It seems our defrocked priest is the next demon hunter and even though demons scare me, I will be reading it as soon as it comes out.Devor has done an outstanding job with Sorrow's Point. You won't be sorry you spent the money.

By Rabbit Coca I'm really not one to write a review but this book was god awful. The dialogue was horrible. The characters were page wasters and most the story takes place in a kitchen with the characters constantly eating. Things were mentioned in the story that had absolutely nothing to do with the story. I can't wait to forget I read this book hell I think the author was even forgetting what she wrote in this book. At one section a character mentions a Russian grandparent as if they are alive and later in the book a different character says she's deceased. Ugh I'm still not sure how I got through this book. For you grammar nazis this is the book to avoid. Hell for most people this is the book to avoid.

This dark and horrifying story has all the elements of classic horror: a defrocked priest, a possessed child and a house with a terrible history. Devon takes these horror mainstays and makes them her own with clear, crisp prose and dazzling dialogue that genuinely sends a shiver down your spine. With touches of Wheatley and splashes of Herbert and King, Sorrow's Point announces a new and brilliant voice in horror writing. Now for the sequel…

A very good book By marcus daniels this book is very interesting, talking about a pax team that finds all kinds of planets, it also talked about other characters like Von Clapp , the doctor blunt, his buddy clown, about when he was young and his first small telescope that magnified x24. i liked the part about the 3 paintings that made it into the smithsonian , have to say that blew my mind. Von Clapp seems to be really smart on how he deals with things. in this book he talks about alot of different places, stars, planets, and so many others. this is a very good book packed with all kind of surprises. I really enjoyed it and i thank you will too.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Surreal! By Rae Phillips This was a very unusual read and as challenging as the reader wants it to be, I suspect that the interpretation of the book will be different for every reader. Who Is The Sun King feels like something of a hallucinogenic trip into the mind of Sol Lidden, the reader enters into his surreal world which is born of an original imagination to say the least! This collection of stories follows a narrative in which the reader follows Sol as he travels through time during medical hypnosis, as Sol regresses he forms memories these develop into stories into which the reader is drawn. There are predecessors who could claim to have influenced the writing style; Huxley’s Brave New World, Bradbury’s Illustrated Man both books which were ahead of their time and of the science fiction genre which is for me where I would place Sun King.I loved the illustrations and use of poetry, my favourite story was Bustle, again I think there are personal reasons that will draw the reader to each individual story, Bustle worked for me after watching a family member descend into psychosis, there were parts of this story that I felt I could easily interpret and relate to. It is also fair to say that there is a rhythm and poetic quality to the writer’s style and this enhances the dream like state that the reader weaves through. How far you allow yourself to slip into his mind will depend on how brave you are.

Complete with sketches and illustrations, it really takes your mind to places that it's never been before. I've never read a book that has tested my imagination as much as this one did! There are so many twists and turns, and it leaves you questioning so many things and really gets your mental cogs going. The characters within the book are all described with such precision that you feel as though you have met every single one of them yourself. This book is a fantastic read! I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be passing it onto my boyfriend for him to enjoy too!

In 2001, Truman Capote’s stylish homage to Brooklyn was brought back into print, but not until 2014— more than fifty years after they were taken—were the original photographs commissioned to illustrate the essay discovered by the late photographer’s son. Also found among the negatives were previously unknown portraits of Capote; none of the photos had ever been published.  Now, with the publication of Brooklyn: A Personal Memoir, with the lost photographs of David Attie, the words and images are united for the first time. With an introduction by George Plimpton and afterword by Eli Attie.

Brooklyn: A Personal Memoir: With the lost photographs of David Attie, by Truman Capote

Review "This marriage of Capote's glimmering words with Attie's harmonizing photographs is perfected by the younger Attie's narrative, in this unparalleled addition to the Capote canon.” —Shelf Awareness  "When it comes to illustrated works, one relatively slim volume stands out. Bridging the gap between essay collections and glossy coffee table tomes is Brooklyn: A Personal Memoir...A real gem of a find.” —One of the 8 best books in art, Christmas 2015, The Independent (UK) "Now, no matter where you live, you can get back to Capote's Brooklyn with its eccentric rich old ladies, multi-ethnic sailors, also home to drunks, dead horses in the street, ‘brats' that rollerskated and juvenile delinquent gangs because of a marvelous stash of photos of Capote and his Brooklyn world discovered by the son of the photographer David Attie which has been published along with the original essay he was commissioned to write about his 'hood for Holiday Magazine in 1959, in Brooklyn: A Personal Memoir by Truman Capote.” —Patricia Zohn, The Huffington Post "Capote’s meandering thinking and gorgeous prose preserve the waterfront architecture and eccentric locals he had come to love while his contemporaries praised Manhattan. The photos amp up the nostalgic beauty...The Brooklyn celebrated here is definitively, as the title promises, Capote’s personal Brooklyn, and it might seem a far cry from other documentations of the borough in the 1950s. For fans of the writer or devotees of New York history, the celebration of this place, where, 'in the greenless grime-gray, oases do occur, splendid contradictions,' will be a valuable memento.” —Publishers Weekly"The long-lost photos...bring even more life to Capote’s sparkling description of the history and spirit of the neighborhood, with its eccentric characters, back alleys and fine houses ('as elegant and other-era as formal calling cards').” —The New York Times, “Travel"

About the Author

Truman Capote (1924–1984), the novelist, journalist, and celebrated man-about-town, is best known as the author of Other Voices, Other Rooms; The Grass Harp; Breakfast at Tiffany’s; and In Cold Blood. David Attie (1920–1982), a commercial and fine art photographer, began his photographic career as a student of influential Harper’s Bazaar art director Alexey Brodovitch, who gave Attie his first professional assignment: to create a series of photo montages to illustrate Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Attie’s work appeared in Vogue, Time, Newsweek, and Harper’s Bazaar, among other publications. He produced two books of photographs, Russian Self-Portraits, and (together with Chuck Close, Robert Mapplethorpe, and others), Portrait: Theory. George Plimpton (1927–2003), the originator of “participatory journalism,” was the editor of The Paris Review. His books include Paper Lion, Out of My League, The Bogey Man, Open Net, The Curious Case of Sidd Finch, and The X Factor. Eli Attie is a television writer and producer. He served as a special assistant to President Bill Clinton, and then as  Vice President Al Gore’s chief speechwriter. Attie was a longtime writer on the series The West Wing and House. He grew up in New York City, is a graduate of Hunter College, and lives in Los Angeles.

Home again By Amazon Customer Having grown up on the Heights (I was two when these photos were taken), this was a wonderful portal back to my childhood. One picture in particular actually made me cry at the memory it evoked....a good memory, mind you, but seeing something that I hadn't thought about in probably 50 years was a bit overwhelming. Attie was a wonderful photographer, and you don't have to be a Heights resident to appreciate this book or his talent.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I highly recommend this book By Marc Tull I am David Attie's nephew and Eli Attie's cousin. David got me started in photography. Family relations not withstanding, I highly recommend this book. It is a son's homage to his father, a time capsule of Brooklyn in 1958 and a reminder that the photographer, and not the camera, makes the photograph.Eli explains David's reluctance to shoot street scenes. Despite his reluctance, his photographs rival the great street and social documentary photographers. Photographers enjoying this book should keep in mind that David probably shot with a twin lens, fixed focal length reflex, using 12 exposure rolls of Tri-X film. At best, he would have been able to "push" the film to 800 ASA. This makes the interior shots even more remarkable.I understand that the photographs were selected from about 800 negatives. I have shot hundreds of street scenes, with technical advantages far beyond anything available to David. Out of those hundreds of shots, I have two that I am even willing to show, and those don't even come close.Every photographer should have a copy of this book. Highly recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Capote's 1950's Brooklyn Heights in Photos By aron row Originally written for Holiday Magazine in 1959, Capote captured the essence of his Brooklyn Heights’ residency along with its iconic buildings and the offbeat denizens residing in its environs. Spiced with Capote’s maverick appraisals, the essay revives a memory of a neighborhood from a bygone era. But the essence of this edition is the publication of David Attie’s photographs commissioned in 1958 to publicize Capote and the upcoming production of Breakfast at Tiffanys. Unfortunately these images were never published, and only after fifty years were they discovered by the photographer's son. These pictures comprise the bulk of the book and now reveal two photos of a young Truman posed against and within the gigantic winding staircase of his Brooklyn Heights Willow Street residence. The remaining shots capture in crisp black and white the essence of Brooklyn Heights in the 1950’s. The scenes of the shops, buildings, neighborhoods, river, and especially the resident teens and local folk summon the viewer back to a bygone time so aptly portrayed in this compelling memoir. Further enhancing this edition is the laudable introduction by George Plimpton.

By Heather After coming off the high of Deception, a 5-star read for me, this one felt like a miss.I love this series so much, and for me to give anything less than 4-stars is rare. My main issue here wasn't the plot (which was exciting and furthered the overall arc of the series nicely), but the romance, which didn't work for me.To start, I didn't like Natalie as a protagonist. I have a thing against girls who are clearly beautiful but portray themselves as these shy little maidens. Girls like Natalie, with a killer body, a gorgeous face, and smarts, should not be acting like insecure, whiny girls if they want my support. She just irked me, and I never got behind her as a character.I also didn't see evidence of the so-called crazy intelligence of Natalie. I felt like the author was trying to make her geeky and likable but failed on that front. The romance between Christian (who was also not fully appealing to me) and Natalie was waaaay too instalove for my taste. It felt rushed, and I just didn't buy them as a couple. I wanted to love them but I simply didn't.Despite the fact that I didn't love this one, it doesn't change the fact that this is one of my favorite series. I can't wait for the next one because it sounds like it is going to be awesome.**Copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

CHRISTIAN is an exciting and dangerously seductive read that will have you panting for more!Oh my goodness! D.B. Reynolds has outdone herself this time! The war between the North American and European vampires is heating up with the fight over the South (southern U.S. states). Ever since the previous Lord was killed, Raphael appointed a temporary Vampire to hold the territory…with Raphael’s backing, of course. With new powers in play, the game constantly changing and the seat of the South up for grabs, war is eminent. Sides are taken and loyalties are tested in this latest installment of the Vampires in America series! This book is SO exciting! I loved the politics and the new players on the scene. And I really enjoyed Christian. I’ll admit, when the story first began, he was stiff and sterile. Come to find out, that’s just his shield. When you get underneath his skin, you’ll find a hot-blooded, extremely sexy, erotically seductive and powerful Vampire. Not to mention he’s tall, blond, heavily muscled and French! Oo la la, indeed!Natalie is a half-Cajun/half-Creole spitfire from New Orleans with a snarky mouth and wicked intelligence. She definitely gives Christian a run for his money. They fit well together and their chemistry is off the charts! Their sex scenes are so hot, you’ll be scandalized for a week! The entire book was non-stop action! Several of the Vampire Lords make appearances as well as a few mates. And the epilogue is going to drive you crazy! It’s short, sweet and has just enough suspense to have you BEGGING for the next book!D.B. Reynolds just keeps getting better and better. Her stories are always well-written and entertaining. I would recommend CHRISTIAN and any of the author’s books, all day every day!***I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own***

Another Amazing Edition to the Series, clever heroine, Alpha Vampire and some humor By Danielle Taylor Christian is the 10th book in the Vampire in America Series and it just keeps getting better! I always think I've met my favorite vampire and then I meet another one, although Raphael will probably always hold the top spot D.B. Reynold's vampires are irresistible, sexy, and intriguing. Each vampire is also different enough that she hasn't fallen into the "this hero sounds just like previous heroes" other authors sometimes find themselves in. This series just keeps getting better and better and leaves you on the edge of your seat to see what will come next! This book centers around Christian a European vampire that is the progeny of Mathilde (Raphael's enemy from the previous book). Christian declined to go along with Mathilde's scheme to kill Raphael and take his territory and has his own plans to become Lord of the South. He believes in the old world ways and has been in Texas scouting the territory and devising his strategy. He meets with Raphael and although his reception isn't overwhelming Raphael is a strategist who can see that Christian may just be the powerful ally for the South. However, Christian will have more than just Lord Anthony to contend with. Hubert, is creating a zombie like vampire army in Mexico with the plans to take over the South as well. This book contains all the usual suspense, deception and subterfuge but along with that there are quite a few very humorous moments as well. Natalie at first doesn't appear to be like the usual heroines but it quickly becomes obvious that her strength is in her intelligence. I loved that Natalie didn't try to be something she wasn't but instead used her intelligence to help and thought through dangerous situations before making a decision. This book kept me on the edge of my seat reading and I enjoyed every minute of it. Although you could read it as a stand alone the main storyline is a continuation from previous books and of course we see some of the previous characters as well so I recommend reading the whole series in order. This is one of the best Vampire series out there and worth reading more than once! I'm looking forward to the next book and finding out how Sophie saves her mate. This book was provided by Net Galley in return for a honest review.

In The Partnership Charter, psychologist and business mediation expert David Gage offers a comprehensive guide to the art of establishing and maintaining a business partnership. The centerpiece of his approach is the Partnership Charter, a document that clearly outlines the goals, expectations, responsibilities, and relationships of the principals. The charter identifies potential sources of conflict and how they will be resolved, while addressing such sensitive issues as personal styles, values, money, and power.

Illustrating every principle through engaging stories drawn from Gage's front-line experience consulting to business partners, as well as interviews with the founding partners of such successful businesses as Progressive Insurance Company and Manpower, Inc., The Partnership Charter dispels common myths and presents a practical framework for launching, building, and sustaining a thriving business partnership.

The Partnership Charter: How to Start Out Right with Your New Business Partnership (or Fix the One You're In), by David Gage

From Publishers Weekly Gage, a professor at the Kogod School of Business at American University, believes that business partners should have an operating charter in addition to a partnership agreement. This operating charter, while not legally binding, is a strategic way for partners to have a serious, ongoing discussion about how they plan to run their business, deal with work issues and people, and spell out their expectations. The actual charter is far less important than the conversations leading up to its drafting. Gage discusses the four key questions that should be considered when deciding to form a partnership. While some people can explain why they want to own a business and why they want to have a partner, two questions—are there better alternatives than choosing a partner and is the person you're choosing the best partner—are more difficult to answer. Using a variety of examples, Gage shows how business people sometimes choose partners instead of finding outside financing or hiring a consultant. This is a clear and helpful book, best for people who are considering setting up a partnership. Readers who are already in partnerships, however, may find Gage's advice useful but harder to implement. Overall, this book is a solid addition to the business guide category. Insightful Advice to Small Business Owners By Ginny Wilmerding I came across this book in the small business section of the library, and once I had read it, decided I needed to purchase a copy for my permanent collection. I have been through the partnership anguish described in the book, and I wish I'd found the book earlier because I think my partner and I may have had a chance at working things out had we followed Gage's advice. Moreover, I am writing a book on women and small business, including a section about how natural and helpful it is to take on a business partner. I plan to refer to and recommend Gage's book in my own. The Partnership Charter is insightful, useful, and well-written. In a very professional way, Gage tackles one of the most vexing challenges of small businesses: they are personality-driven. I won't pretend that implementation of his advice is easy, but at least you'll have a roadmap that helps you and your partner to reduce the risks, get to know each other better, and give it your collective best shot.

A Practical Guide for Business Partnerships By Rolf Dobelli This is a top-notch book - nicely written, smartly organized, and easy to follow and understand. It provides insightful information, telling case histories, useful checklists and exercises, and even includes a fully developed "Partnership Charter" in the appendix. Author David Gage offers an inside view of partnerships, and his case studies make the text a pleasure to read. More importantly, he shows you how to create a partnership charter that will function as your enterprise's Magna Carta in the years to come. If you are planning a partnership, we advise you to study this expert presentation first. You will save yourself a lot of trouble.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Very helpful book By D. Haviland I am a management consultant that helps companies with growth, and work with 3 partners in my firm. We developed a partnership agreement, but, as the company has developed, it has lacked depth in thinking through how we continue to work together as circumstances have changed. Gage's book provides a structure and process by which this would not happen -- i.e., partners have a better discussion at the start of the partnership (or whenever it is needed/wanted -- we'll be having one soon) that enables them to better plan for what might happen and create a framework for bringing these issues up when they need to be discussed. This is a terrific book because it provides background and context, as well as practical, actionable advice. And it is useful for people considering, in, or dissolving a partnership.

As the title signifies, Pro Wrestling Through The Power Slam Years: 1994-2014 is the story of professional wrestling during the 20-year period that Power Slam: The Wrestling Magazine resided on newsagents’ shelves. For those unaware of the magazine, the first issue of Power Slam went on sale in July 1994. The final issue hit the shops in July 2014. Pro Wrestling Through The Power Slam Years: 1994-2014 provides in-depth critique of the key events in the WWF/WWE, WCW, ECW, TNA and other companies during that period, including Vince McMahon’s steroid trial, Hulk Hogan’s move to WCW, the influence of Atsushi Onita’s FMW on Western wrestling, the grown-up approach to wrestling spearheaded by ECW, the reinvention and awe-inspiring rise of WCW, the Montreal double-cross and its far-reaching ramifications, and the WWF’s long-awaited transition from family-friendly entertainment provider to contemporary boundary-breaker, fronted by the ultra-charismatic Steve Austin and The Rock. Pro Wrestling Through The Power Slam Years: 1994-2014 delves into the Monday night war: the dizzying heights both the WWF and WCW ascended as they pushed each other to the limit of their bank accounts and imaginations, followed by the demoralising depths to which WCW sank, before it was purchased by the WWF’s parent company at a rock-bottom price in 2001. It wasn’t a case of “Where did it all go wrong for WCW?” It all went wrong. The book recounts ECW’s attempts to go national in the States, and the financial problems it encountered which also resulted in its closure and purchase by the WWF’s parent company in 2001. It examines the launch of NWA: TNA, and its journey to national television and beyond. Ring Of Honor’s impact on the business. Brock Lesnar’s split from WWE in 2004 and return in 2012 on his own terms, along with his wrestling-related adventures in the interim. The John Cena era in WWE. The Benoit tragedy. The fall and rise of New Japan Pro Wrestling in the 2000s. The rise and fall of Pro Wrestling NOAH. NXT. The launch of the WWE Network. The growth of PROGRESS, ICW, PCW, RPW and other companies in the U.K. — and so much more. All these companies, happenings, people and ventures are chronicled in the book, without fear or favour. In addition, Pro Wrestling Through The Power Slam Years: 1994-2014 contains a history of Power Slam magazine and its predecessor Superstars Of Wrestling, which ran from January 1992-June 1994. The story of the magazine reads like a pro wrestling match-up, in some respects. Seemingly down for the three count at the end of 1996, Power Slam made a miraculous comeback in the second half of 1997, and continued publishing for the next 17 years.

Very detailed and easy to read. However, I was slightly confused by the suggestion that the acknowledgment of the use of blading in wrestling was something groundbreaking. Was this serious or was it sarcasm?Surely everyone who read the magazine knew that wrestlers bladed. Also, I am sure that Power Slam Magazine had mentioned blading for years before the article on blading mentioned in this book.Nevertheless, this was a tremendous read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended. By Adam Berry I have loved Fin Martin's incisive writing on wrestling for the better part of 20 years. This book is a wonderful glimpse into what it is to run a wrestling magazine and a rich chronicle of the most significant happenings in the wrestling industry.A wonderful and superbly written book that could not come more highly recommended to those with even a passing interest in professional wrestling.A must read.

I bought the two graphic novels and read them many times. I would buy more Princess Ugg books if they came out.Princess Ugg missed its chance to be great because it lacked focus. It has the fish-out-of-water story of the country girl in a school of spoiled royals. There is a bit of the situation comedy of the normal girl dealing with comic characters. Finally, there is the quest tale of the warrior princess trying to bring the gift of knowledge back to her war torn people. The series could have been any of these stories. There was a bit of everything which weakened the book.Quibbles aside, I would recommend this book.

Book Three in the Our Lady of Joy series. Having fled the Western Marches to avoid either losing her Guardian or being used as a figurehead in a brewing national struggle, Lira now finds herself a guest of the Queen of Isura Okun in the Southern Marches, accompanied by Rease, Night, their kittens, her father and her rapidly growing entourage. Anchored by his title as Our Lady’s Wolf, Rease continues his transformation into a happier man and strengthens his relationship with Lira as she continues to adapt to her role as Our Lady of Joy. Even closer as they devote themselves to this new family being created all around them, Jonas and Dove continue to spend time together as she too begins to realize that she can remake her life to find happiness. Now far more than a simple houseman, Thomas discovers to his dismay that his involvement is crucial to Our Lady’s success in the coming war foretold in the prophesy, even as his wife Annabelle remains steadfast in her devotion to her role as Our Lady’s Shield Maiden. Lira’s friend Hanna, hopeful that this trip might heal her broken heart, soon finds that such a thing is not to be as Blake Weymine and memories of the time they shared continue haunting her even in this new land. As Hanna devotes herself to the study of exotic new botanical species in an effort to ignore Blake, he struggles to be the man he wants to be, hopeful that he can some day regain her trust. Yet even as Lira’s extended family remains unaware of what the future will bring, Iranti, one of the Queen’s Seers, finds that she too has a role to play in helping Our Lady hold back the dark, even if it has yet to be revealed. But even in the opulent luxury of the palace, the ugly promise of the prophesy intrudes as Lira learns once more that being Our Lady of Joy is fraught with risk no matter where she resides.

In Milwaukee, Isabelle Day had a house. And she had a father. This year, on Halloween, she has half of a house in Minneapolis, a mother at least as sad as she is, and a loss that’s too hard to think—let alone talk—about. It’s the Midwest in the early 1960s, and dads just don’t die . . . like that.

Hovering over Isabelle’s new world are the duplex’s too-attentive landladies, Miss Flora (“a lovely dried flower”) and her sister Miss Dora (“grim as roadkill”), who dwell in a sea of memories and doilies; the gleefully demonic Sister Mary Mercy, who rules a school awash in cigarette smoke; and classmates steady Margaret and edgy Grace, who hold out some hope of friendship. As Isabelle’s first tentative steps carry her through unfamiliar territory—classroom debacles and misadventures at home and beyond, time trapped in a storm-tossed cemetery and investigating an inhospitable hospital—she begins to discover that, when it comes to pain and loss, she might actually be in good company.

In light of the elderly sisters’ lives, Grace and Margaret’s friendship, and her father’s memory, she just might find the heart and humor to save herself. With characteristic sensitivity and wit, Jane St. Anthony reveals how a girl’s life clouded with grief can also hold a world of promise.

Review

"Gently depicted incidents of everyday life believably provide a balm for Isabelle’s aching soul. Stories for the middle grade audience that deal with the suicide of a parent are few, and this one, sensitive but never syrupy, stands out."—Kirkus Reviews

"Well-drawn characters distinguish an understated story about facing loss and keeping an eye out for moments of brightness during difficult times."—Publishers Weekly

"I’m sure my younger self, the one that loved “Little Women” and “Daddy Long Legs” would have kissed this book after she finished and hugged it for a long while."—Words&Dreams

"A thoughtful, often somber story, this will be appreciated most by fans of the earlier novels."—Booklist

What happened to him is too awful to talk about. Because her mother wanted to move Isabelle now has to start all over again. She has to make new friends and she has to get used to a new home, which is a duplex instead of a three-story house. There two old ladies who live in the same building who don't leave Isabelle alone. Their names are Flora and Dora and they are sisters. They are good at preparing food and they tell the most fascinating stories. Fortunately Isabelle manages to make a new friend who is her own age as well. Her name is Margaret and she's very nice. Only Margaret has another friend already. Her name is Grace and she isn't as welcoming as Margaret and doesn't offer her friendship so easily. Isabelle doesn't want to be defeated and she tries to make the best of things. Together with her new friends she might be able to find some happiness again. It's the 1960s and speaking of her father's death is difficult for Isabelle. She loved him very much. They lived in a perfect house and she had a good life. Now everything is uncertain. Isabelle is unhappy and she isn't ready to open up, but there are people who are reaching out to her. I liked that idea a lot, it's sweet and absolutely amazing. Isabelle is a strong girl and even though she's lost a lot she tries to keep going. I loved Dora and Flora, who are such wonderful old ladies and great friends. With Dora and Flora nothing is ever boring. Isabelle Day Refuses to Die of a Broken Heart is a wonderful book about loss, hope and kindness. The writing is beautiful and I think both children and grown ups will love it. This book is very special, mainly because of the fantastic friendships. Even though there's sadness because of Isabelle's father there's also room to smile and to have adventures. This heartwarming story is a fabulous read.

Yes, there was sadness because Isabelle's father died and it seemed like the spirit of the household died with him. Isabelle and her mother moves to MN to be in a larger city for ease of getting a job and that's where her mother used to live. The story centers around the two elderly ladies in the duplex and how Isabelle remembers her single home in Milwaukee, WI. Oh to go back. But Isabelle stands strong and gets involved in the two elderly ladies lives and meets new friends in the area. Yet, at one point her mother asks if they should move back to Milwaukee. They decide life is good right where they are. There is a spark of religion in the story as well. Great addition to church library.

My daughter (who was in middle school at the time) and I loved "The Summer Sherman Loved Me" and "Grace Above All." How wonderful to now have the trilogy completed with "Isabelle Day." Kudos to University of Minnesota press for publishing this beautiful book and re-issuing its counterparts.

Mine is the Kindle edition which is a reformatted version of the original book published in 1918.The author was a prolific author and popular in his time. He died in 1940 and was the author of a large number of fictional works and short stories. He also wrote a dozen non-fiction works including CRESCENT AND IRON CROSS which was published at the end of World War I.Benson writes well, but his style reflects the affectations of Victorian authors. Younger readers might find it a bit of a slog. It's worth it, though. Benson describes some of the worst parts of the Armenian genocide carried out by the Turks. The Armenians were a Christian minority within the Ottoman Empire and millions of them were murdered by the Muslim Turks once World War I got underway.Turkey was an ally of Imperial Germany and Benson sprinkles his graphic descriptions of mass murder with phrases blaming the "Prussian molochs" for inciting the Turks to destroy their Chrisian minority. Coming at the end of a world war which the British and their allies blamed on Germany, this is understandable. Later works do not depict this very real campaign of genocide as being a consequence of German meddling. In fact, some of the best eye-witness accounts of it come from German observers.Throughout all the torture and mass murder, there is an eerie resemblance to the early phases of Hitler's Holocaust against the Jews, especially the operations of the SS Einsatzgruppen in Poland. "Who alive still speaks of the Armenians?" Hitler reportedly asked. The author does and his book is one of the first to do so. I gave it four stars for its pioneering effort. I took one off because I'm descended from Prussians myself. If you're interested in World War I, the Middle East, Turkey, Armenia or mass murder, you'll find this to be a useful reference book. Benson pulls no punches in describing what happened.

But I guess history is full of events like this, even in todays news By Mike Regan Historically interesting as I did not know much about the subject.I am not sure when this book was first published, I assumed some time after the first world war.It is hard to believe that human beings can be so cruel. But I guess history is full of events like this, even in todays news.

On the Ball, by Brian Pinkney

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—Owen is a young boy who loves playing ball, but "playing ball didn't always love Owen." When he is benched at a soccer game, the ball takes on a life of its own. Owen follows it into a fantasy world—a down-the-rabbit-hole adventure—where he becomes a sea creature, a tiger, and a bird before returning back to the field. With these newly acquired abilities to float, pounce, and fly, his soccer skills are supreme, and the last page features a martial arts-style spinning air kick into the goal. The illustrations, with their loose and fluid watercolors with India ink outlines, recall Chris Raschka's work and perfectly reflect the fast-paced nature of a soccer game. The brown-skinned soccer-playing boy is a wonderful addition to the genre of sports picture books, as the title celebrates the triumph of a playful mind and its connection to the body. VERDICT A joyful selection for all collections.—Lisa Nowlain, Darien Library, CT

About the Author In addition to two Caldecott Honors, Brian Pinkney (www.brianpinkney.net) has also been awarded the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award, a Coretta Scott King Award, and four Coretta Scott King Honors. The art is OK but the brief storyline is not that inspired. The reader gets to follow a youngster who chases a wayward ball...On a scale from one to ten I'd give this a five at best....This may interest a younger child because of the illustrations but it won't do much for the older set!
