By Amazon Customer I've always depended on the reviews from fellow Amazon readers, and it's guided me to some great books I'd have otherwise not read. This, unfortunately, is one of those "how-the-hell-did-this-get-5-stars" situations that has driven me to write a review (something I would typically not do).The story is relatively sound, and in the world of martial fantasy, certainly good enough for a casual read and peaked my interest. The writing, however, is largely terrible. Nightblade reads like a second draft rushed to publishing. The flow is constantly, consistently spoiled by repetitive language, repetitive paragraph structure, and some just downright ****y sentence structure. For example:"The man lived and breathed swordsmanship because from the man's glances Orochi could tell he was about to ask about Orochi's blade"That is a horrible sentence. It's awkward, garbled, and manages to use the name Orochi twice in short order. Likewise, there have been several instances of back-to-back paragraphs stating the same thing in slightly different ways. Use of the word "kingdom" in three consecutive sentences, the staggering amount of times the world "cycles" appears in this book, etc.The potential is there, certainly, and I imagine I may enjoy the second book in the trilogy much more if I can bring myself to read it. I've only made it to about 80% of the way through Nightblade by aggressive skipping of paragraphs and pages when the writing gets under my skin. Perhaps I've just been spoiled by the likes of Will Wight, Jim Butcher, Pierce Brown, Robin Hobb and Scott Lynch (to name a few).If you're not the type of person to be bothered those sorts of grammatical and structural issues, you'll probably really enjoy the book. If you're like me and find the experience easily ruined by clumsy turn of phrase, then skip this one. While I appreciate the enthusiasm of the book's fans, I have a very hard time understanding how this is a 5-star-near-perfect effort.

Ryuu, a young boy, is orphaned in a tragic bandit attack, but is rescued by a strange warrior named Shigeru. Shigeru adopts Ryuu and raises him, training him in combat and to use "the sense." Meanwhile, there are two other concurrent storylines unfolding, as well. Takako is a beautiful young girl who is sold into a brothel by her father. Moriko is a bright young girl who is taken away from her family to be raised in an abbey when a monk discovers her ability to use "the sense." Eventually, the paths of the three will cross and the consequences of their actions will change their entire nation. The author doesn't waste time world-building, but before you know it, you are swept up in the world of warriors, monks, courtesans and the dangerous "nightblades" and "dayblades" I love that Ryuu is such a believable character - he is young, impatient and can act just like a regular kid. At the same time, you can see him growing into a hero who is going to play a pivotal role in his world. I also really like that Moriko is such a strong female character and I can't wait to see what happens to her and Ryuu in the next book!

16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Very good, but not great By Amazon Customer The book is set in Japanese-like fantasy world, where sensing(magic) is tightly controlled by nonreligious temples. This a coming of age assassins story with focus on character development and the author manages to create very believable characters with flaws, emotion and codes of honor. My cons are:The childhood of the character does suspend my belief due how adult they act. This resolves it self as they grow older. For how much emphasis that is put on the fighting abilities of characters in book, the climatic fights are over very quickly and without much detail.I am not at stickler for sentence structure and punctuation (English is my second language) and normally I don't even notice most mistakes, but there were a few times I had to reread part many times before I was clear on what the author was saying. All in all a book I enjoyed reading but probably won't reread.A really good choice if you enjoy a character driven story where the character have strong codes of honor

Best PDF Ebook The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors: Conversations with Over 100 Casting Directors on How to Get the Job (revised 2016), by Karen Kondazian

Karen Kondazian's newly revised and edited The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors, compiles valuable inside information from over 100 premier casting directors, as regards to both Hollywood and New York film, television, theater and commercial auditioning. Bonus conversations included are discussions on film acting, with award-winning directors James Cameron and John Woo - and interviews with renowned acting coaches ‘to the stars,’ Larry Moss, Milton Katselas and Jeff Corey. Great casting directors have the talent to identify which actor will fit that one role, filtering through hundreds of 'potentials,' eventually delivering that actor into the hands of the decision makers. This in-depth book about the casting process informs actors what it’s like to be on the other side of the desk, what each casting director likes, dislikes and is searching for in the audition process. The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors exists to educate, inspire and empower actors because far too much in this business is out of their control. You have at your fingertips an invaluable resource that serves the actor in any number of ways - one unique example being, it includes a photo of each casting director. (How many actors are in a daze when they walk into the audition room wondering if they are auditioning for the casting director or their assistant - now they will know). Karen Kondazian’s experience as an award-winning actor and author (The Whip, inspired by a true story) and her previous long running column for Backstage, enabled her to ask questions on behalf of actors everywhere. The answers Kondazian has garnered for this book will hopefully give the actor real knowledge and confidence, so that when they walk out of the audition room, they know that they did their best.

The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors: Conversations with Over 100 Casting Directors on How to Get the Job (revised 2016), by Karen Kondazian

Review While I'm not in the habit of recommending industry books, I do praiseKaren Kondazian's, The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors. It's a highly practical, intelligently written work that will be an asset toany working actor or newcomer who hopes to find work. The informationdispensed in the Q&A format will help you prepare for any audition, whether it be for the particular casting director profiled or someoneelse you may be reading for. I use thebook regularly before auditions to refresh my memory as to what eachcasting directors' likes and dislikes are.- Thomas Mills - Senior Columnist, Backstage West Newspaper

About the Author Karen Kondazian's career as an actor, author and producer, started early in life... At the age of eight, Karen was chosen to be one of the infamous children on Art Linkletter's famous Kids Say the Darndest Things. The opportunity to miss school during tapings was all it took for Karen to abandon her life's goal of becoming a CIA spy and focus on acting.   She was born in Boston, completing her education at The University of Vienna and The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, after which she began her acting career in New York. Her first professional work was in the Off Broadway, award-winning production of Michael Cacoyannis' The Trojan Women, later winning the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in The Rose Tattoo. Tennessee Williams, after seeing her work, was so impressed that he gave her carte blanche to produce any of his plays in his lifetime.   Other award-winning performances include Sweet Bird of Youth (with Ed Harris), Vieux Carre (with Ray Stricklyn) and Maria Callas in Master Class.  On television, she has appeared as a series regular lead in CBS's Shannon, and also guest starred in over 50 television shows and films including: James Dean (with James Franco) and Yes Giorgio (with Luciano Pavarotti).  She is a lifetime member of the Actors Studio and a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.   As an author, Kondazian is a multi-award winning novelist. Her debut novel, The Whip, won the USA News Book Award (Best Historical Fiction), Readers Favorite Award (Best Western Fiction), among other awards. The book was also featured on the cover of Publishers Weekly and is a screenplay.

Accurate and Insightful By Thomas Mills - Senior Columnist, Backstage West Newspaper While I'm not in the habit of recomending industry books, I do praise Karen Kondazian's, The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors. It's a highly practical, intelligently written work that will be an asset to any working actor or newcpmer who hopes to find work. The information dispened in the Q&A format will help you prepare for any auditon wheter it be for the particular casting director profiled or someone else you may be reading for. A quick note; not one day after reading the book I stepped into an elavator and came face to face with one of the casters profiled in the book, I'd actiually read for this person two years before but for the life of me couldn't remember her name. Then, miracle of miracles I somehow saw her face and name from the book, and was quickly able to make a proper introduction. I use the book regularly before auditons to refresh my memory as to what each casting directors' likes and dislikes are.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. good concepts, but not enough depth or variety By A Customer This is a well intentioned book, and has 100 interviews with real life Casting Directors. But after repeating the basics over and over with 100 interviews, there is not alot of depth or additional details. The basic teachings, such as being early to the audition, being prepared, being polite, being a professional, being an enthusiastic auditioner.....well, this is repeated for the 100 interviews. It could have been a much better book, with more details, so 3 stars.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Hear it directly from the casting directors themselves By K. Bingham The role of a casting director is often misunderstood and actors are too often unaware of the pitfalls of auditions. This book is a must-have to help you find your way through. With direct interveiws with over 100 casting directors (mainly LA-based film/TV CDs, but some NY ones also) it gives you direct feedback on what casting directors like to see and don't.One of the best advantages of this book is that you can see what preferences vary among casting directors...and what preferences are universal in the industry. This is an extremely valuable took and one I think should be in everyone's library!

From the best-selling author of the Blood Curse series comes a new legend of danger, dark-fantasy, and vampiric dragons....

Mina Louvet is a fighter, a human with a powerful will to survive in a world dominated by warlocks, soul-eaters, and shifters. Identified by the king's witch as one of the rare, invaluable females in Dragons Realm who can give birth to a dragon's son, she was stolen from her parents as a child and taken to the Keep to be reared in the ways of the Ahavi. As one of the few, the elect - the Sklavos Ahavi - Mina is expected to feed her master's fire, reanimate his blood, and above all else, give him strong dragon offspring: children who will one day rise to power. But Mina, to her great misfortune, is far too intelligent for her own good: She has a stubborn sense of justice, and she is wholly incapable of blind submission.

Dante Dragona is as cunning as he is lethal, as methodical as he is dangerous, and as terrifying as he is powerful. As the eldest of three dragon princes, he is destined to succeed his merciless father to the throne of Castle Dragon. But first he must do his duty to the Realm by governing one of its harsh, unforgiving districts and claiming a Sklavos Ahavi. Hardened by the sadistic abuse he endured as a child and shaped by the tragic suicide of his twin, the prince lives only to fulfill his obligations to the monarchy: to maintain law and order in a bestial land, to contain its magical inhabitants, and to keep the kingdom safe from its mortal enemies, the Lycanian shifters across the sea. Like all primordial dragons, he rules with an iron fist, dominates with absolute power, and punishes with fire. Those who oppose him die a swift and brutal death - subject, enemy, or slave, the Realm has no tolerance for weakness.

When the iron resolve of a dragon prince clashes with the stubborn will of a slave, bonds will be broken, alliances will be tested, and a kingdom will be set ablaze.

Not for me By Amazon Customer I thought the writing was fairly decent (although the author does love to use italics), but this was just a bit too dark and violent for me and I really didn't care for the ending. I am a bit of a sap so I prefer stories a bit brighter and fluffier, so maybe I should've steered clear (but it sounded so good!). I thought the world building was very interesting, but I didn't really enjoy the interactions between the two protagonists because of the roles this world creates. The males are mean and violent in a way that was unappealing to me. I'm all for bestial, growly men with a penchant for violence...but not against women. It just seemed like misery after misery for the poor female lead. Fans of darker fiction/romance would definitely enjoy this. For softer hearted folks, maybe try Juliette Cross?

43 of 47 people found the following review helpful. The dragons treat their subjects like chattel, but are supposed to rule because the ... By C. J. Rae The only reason I finished this novel was because it was a train wreck. The author clearly wanted to tell a political romance, but gave herself no room to develop the characters I was supposed to empathize with or the story I was supposed to be invested in. The world building also made absolutely no sense - you have a war between a nation of cowed humans and nasty warlocks (and some kind of shadow creatures that eat people, but are never developed so that you can understand the horror of the protagonist's younger sister being abducted by them), and a nation of shapeshifters. The dragons treat their subjects like chattel, but are supposed to rule because the king can scare away their enemies and scare the internal nasties into behaving. And we, as the reader, are supposed to accept this reasoning as acceptable for the frankly horrific behavior of all the dragon characters. There are also major consent issues, due to the fact that the protagonist has been raised to to be a slave and breeding stock. She's also not a rebellious slave who challenges the crown prince and makes him re-evaluate the political world he's been raised in. Instead, by having the nerve to ask a couple of questions early on in the book, she guides the reader into accepting that rape, torture and murder are necessary to the safety of the realm, so long as the dragons are kept strong. Meanwhile, her "beauty" teaches the crown prince that a certain measure of compassion is necessary in day to day life, for those he cares about.I came away from this book ready to do some dragon slaying. I very much wanted every single character in this book to die. I settled for returning it promptly and at least getting my money back, if not those few hours of my life, which I put to good use regaling my husband with the story and making him share my pain.

Excellent Real-Llfe Collection of Cases By Hambone I really enjoyed the format of this book and was able to dip in and out of the 52 cases as they are all self-contained. I found myself smiling inwardly at many of the real-life situations and can imagine myself reflecting back on the scenarios when involved in future negotiations. The cases have also improved my awareness of the "cause and effect" in personal situations. Highly recommended.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Easy to remember and apply negotiation advice. By PondJumper 52 Real-life Negotiation Cases takes a refreshing new turn on an established topic. Unlike other texts that either take a formulaic or toolbox approach, Lavelle allows the learning to emerge from the stories he tells. Some of these stories are anecdotal, for example Tim's story of driving up a snow packed street in Chapter 45, while others are closer to the workplace, like Carlos dealing with a strained key client relationship in Chapter 42. Either way, tips like considering your power position, BATNA, or chances of turning the conversation around emerge naturally and to a much higher impact than if the tools were talked about more directly. The story telling nature of the book allows the key negotiation concepts to stick in your head and allow for a quick means of remembering what to do when placed into next negotiation opportunity. Easy to read and apply - highly recommended.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended. By G.J.Scholtz Jon's book is an entertaining collection of real-life negotiations. The cases are varied and practical and he imparts his vast knowledge on negotiation in a novel and enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

You know what he believes, how he thinks, what his attitude and views are about people he interacts, police politics, and sports. I felt I was right at Dobbs' side every step of the way and in his mind watching events unfold.I was beginning to wonder, "Where's the humor this story is supposed to embody?" Then immediately read Dobb's smug remarks to Professor Masterson's inspecting the diary and his fifty-six year old woman with dandruff statement. That had me all but choking as I laughed. Then there was Dobb's understanding of physics which is hilarious but sort of makes sense. In a roundabout way at least. All in all I found the story fun to read. I think it is just right for reading when forced to wait. Perhaps being stuck at the airport, a train station. Or you have a rainy day or boring night at home. Or maybe you just like a good story that won't take you days or more to read. This story is a perfect entertainment break.

By Amazon Customer What would you do if you found a diary that predicted the events of the next ten days, like the winning lottery numbers, or the death of someone you knew? This is the predicament facing Chief Inspector Dobbs, who is both a sceptic, and not partial to the man whose death has been predicted. When the diary proves accurate, he’s obliged to investigate.James Field shows his trademark wit in this short story, which has a deceptively cunning plot that quietly twists and turns its way to a satisfying conclusion. Dobbs is a great character, an underachieving and bumbling policeman who you can’t help but like. Pitted against the curt and authoritative Professor Masterson, you’re bound to be delighted by this ‘odd couple’ science fiction short. Review over. I’m off to buy a lottery ticket…

This monumental study of Johann Sebastian Bach ranks among the great classics of musicology. Since its first publication in 1873–80, it has remained the basic work on Bach and the foundation of later research and study. The three-part treatment describes in chronological sequence practically everything that is known of the composer's life: his ancestry, his immediate family, his associations, his employers, and the countless occasions on which his musical genius emerged. Author Philipp Spitta accompanies this biographical material with quotations from primary sources: correspondence, family records, diaries, official documents, and more.In addition to biographical data, Spitta reviews Bach's musical production, with analyses of more than 500 pieces, covering all the important works. More than 450 musical excerpts are included in the main text, and a 43-page musical supplement illustrates longer passages. Despite the scholarly nature of this work, it also has the rare distinction of being a study that can be read with considerable enjoyment and great profit by every serious music lover, with or without a substantial background in the history of music or musical theory.

Dedmon Spitta on Bach, 19th century expert, volume I, is a useful though dated reference for student's of Bach' music. More current publications, such as Gardiner's 'Music in the Castle of Heaven' increase our understanding.

Unfortunately you can't tell that from the product description unless you read the cover page very carefully. Volume 2 is 700+ pages long. I have not been able to find volumes 1 and 3. Would not have purchased this had I known it wasn't the "complete" Spitta. ("Unabridged" shown on the web site is "Unabridged-in 3 volumes" when you're able to read the cover of the book).

The Time Doctor Takes a Vacation, by Tarra Light

About the Author Searching for truth and the meaning of life, Tarra studied metaphysics and attended spiritual retreats. She wanted to understand the true nature of reality. The Time Doctor Takes a Vacation was written as exploration of our perception of time, and how we create it with our minds.Throughout her life, Tarra struggled to "fit in" with the culture of the people around her. The measured world of clocks and hours seemed at odds with her inner sense of timing and natural way of being. She preferred to live in the forest, amongst the redwoods and Ponderosa pines, attuned to the nature spirits and animals of the wild, harmonizing with the rhythm and flow of life. Inspired by the beauty of nature, Tarra continues to live each day with grateful appreciation for the wonders and oneness of life.Growing up, she assumed she was going to be an artist until the sudden death of her cat Tiger became the catalyst that initiated her writing career. To heal her grief and honor his life, she wrote Cats Can Save the World and published The Princess of Freedom. A past life regression became the impetus for writing Angel of Auschwitz. Accessing her soul memory, she was able to recall in vivid detail her life as Natasza Pelinski, a Jewish girl who became a healer at a Nazi concentration camp. Her current home is Ashland, Oregon, where she lives with four cat companions. She dedicates her life to opening human hearts, healing the Earth, and awakening all souls to God's Eternal Love. There was much left unsaid. would like to see the author develop this further?

Having worked with many companies and particularly with Human Resources departments, I was thrilled to see a book recommending FUN as a critical component of corporate culture and organizational wellness. This book is action oriented and shows organizations how to replace the old-school (think office parties and picnics) expensive and ineffective approaches to providing "fun" at work with meaningful, inexpensive and high impact experiences. You can't lose with this book. It is short enough to feel light but has enough information to feel profound. Well done Fun Department!

I have 100 employees and after reading this book I immediately implemented a Fun Dept in my company. It was the missing piece(or I should say missing department). I loved how the book was a simple how to! My staff is of all ages and we use the words "Enthusiastic" and "Engaged" in our mission, and after completing Playing it Forward, I now know how to bring the mission more to life. Business owners of today....A MUST READ!Maria McCool-Calista Beauty BrandsBy Scott Drinnan on May 22, 2015Format: PaperbackI just finished reading "Playing it Forward" and found it to be a terrific read! I particularly liked the content, structure, format, and, of course, the fun! I'm still howling over the "hump day challenge" story of Ryan...As I read, I found the discoveries validated many aspects of my experience in the workplace, especially as it relates to change management - obtaining leadership participation, surveying and listening to what team members want to do for fun, and the idea that a healthy environment needs to adapt to change along with the various illustrations of fun - all resonate with what I have also observed in the world-of-work.When I was reading the 3Cs, I was reminded of a saying of a friend of mine who worked in the investment industry. He proudly stated that he would not hesitate to get his hair cut during business hours. When asked why, his answer was "since your hair grows on company time, it's only fair that it's cut on company time"... I realize that wasn't the point being made about company time; however, it's a funny story that remains ingrained in my memory whenever I hear the words company time! Seriously, this book is spot-on with the importance of incorporating fun within the fabric of the work day. This book has also helped me to have an even deeper understanding of what The Fun Dept. does for their clients and how they do it. It's fascinating to me how the topic of “increasing employee engagement" is covered in such a practical, realistic and achievable way.I look forward to participating in The Fun Dept’s Public Workshop on June 1st, now with even higher expectations of what a great experience it will be!-Scott Drinnan, Founder & Principal, Drinnan AssociatesBy Irina Baranov on May 24, 2015Format: PaperbackFinally, finally, finally! A how-to-guide for engagement in the workplace. We've all read the studies, the articles, the LinkedIn posts.. we know that fun and engagement works to attract and retain the best of the best. It's the glue that holds our departments and our companies together. But how? How do we accomplish that goal? This book holds the answer. Many answers, actually (since one company's idea of fun will be different from another's). I loved the stories, guidelines and concrete advice that the authors - who are clearly THE experts on fun at work - share. Practical, applicable and easy.If you care about increasing/improving engagement in your team, read this book!By EVA P MENON on June 22, 2015Format: Paperback Verified PurchaseI believe fun is great for business great and morale. The Dragonsitter (The Dragonsitter Series), by Josh Lacey

From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—Edward Smith-Pickle, "Eddie," finds himself in a pickle as he is taking care of his uncle's dragon while he is away. Unfortunately, his uncle didn't leave any instructions, and the dragon isn't exactly on his best behavior as he devours endless amounts of food, tears up the house, terrorizes the neighborhood pets, and sets the curtains and the mailman on fire. Eddie emails his uncle asking for help but doesn't get any replies. His mom is at her wit's end, and Eddie wonders what to do next. Finally, he gets some advice from his uncle, which turns things around. Told entirely through emails, this story provides plenty of funny moments, as Eddie manages to sound both upbeat and worried at the same time. This is the first of a planned four-book series, and its humorous tone and illustrations will appeal to young readers. VERDICT A solid purchase for collections in need of short chapter books.—Laura Fields Eason, Parker Bennett Curry Elementary School, Bowling Green, KY

Blake and Sandra really gotten what they deserve for being who they are and they did it with clear conscience.Great story with Davis got booted, and there are still good Americans in the government, at least a president that listens to good advisors. With the support from the new governor, rebuilding will be smoother but not necessarily easy. The homestead has it and the rest will follow.Good ending.

Perfect blend of photographs and stories By Amazon Customer This book is a beautiful, intricate depiction of a colorful and complicated place and people. The photographs are unique and intimate while also defining Cuba as I know it from my travels. I am also a longtime fan of both Brian Andreas and Pico Iyer, and the integration of their personal interpretations of the country complete the story. Even the layout is impeccable, with Andreas' stories on opaque vellum sheets over Resnick's colorful photographs shining through. Worth its weight in gold!!

An absolutely masterful work of art By h Alton Jones Lorne Resnick has captured the heart and soul of Cuba and its people in this brilliant collection. I have worked as a photographer for nearly fifty years. If I were to spend another fifty years in pursuit of perfection, I could only hope to get close to Lorne’s accomplishment. This book is nothing short of divine.Lorne has the eye of the master. His prints not only glow with vibrant colors and light, they bring the subjects to life. They speak to you about Cuba… growing up, growing old, struggles, joys and all things that live in our minds and hearts. You don’t just look at the images; you have silent conversations with them. The stories by Brian Andreas are delightful and insightful. The book is even richer for them.If you’ve ever been to Cuba, this book will take you back. If you’ve never been to Cuba, this book is the next best thing. This is clearly a masterpiece.

Where it has been hidden from the rest of the World and there was time for Lorne Resnick to photograph the people, the landscape, interesting architecture and my personal favorite...the cars. This book is a big, fascinating and heavy art book that you will want to look at with archival care as you turn the pages because this book will be one that you will want to pass on to your family. Thank you for creating this book for those of us that may never make it to Cuba to see the real thing. Be blessed on your journey where ever your camera takes you.

I went to Costa Rica in January, 2016, and took the 2nd Edition (Dec., 2015) release with me. So many times the information was just plain wrong and misleading (e.g., venues not listed where they should be, with appropriate hours), including maps of cities (e.g., Quepos!!!). Did the author even bother to fact check???? The book is only acceptable as a general guide. And don't get me started on the "star" attractions presented........ Reeks of money changing hands.
