Sewing in Circles (Sew Zoey), by Chloe Taylor

Review "An aspiring fashion designer is the affable heroine of this first book in the Sew Zoey series. . . . In a smoothly written story of overcoming challenges with ingenuity and style, Taylor shows a knack for characterization and dialogue, and her detailed descriptions of Zoey’s designs will entice young fashionistas." (Publishers Weekly)"Most novels about fashion end up being more about little divas than about the clothing; this is an exception. This story celebrates the rewards of personal creativity and risks of self-expression. . . . This book will appeal to a middle-grade crowd that isn’t into vampires and dystopias, as well as to those who create art with their hands." (Kirkus Reviews)"Zoey Webber is a funky fashionista stuck in a gray-polyester-uniform world. The first book in a delightful new series, this will appeal to any girl finding her own style. Zoey is a bubbly and vivacious character who doesn’t let insecurities take command." (Booklist)"The characters are enjoyable and well developed, and the plot is humorous and entertaining. The black-and-white drawings that open each chapter add a bit of fashion flair. With a touching ending that will leave readers with a warm, fuzzy feeling, this novel will appeal to young fashionistas." (School Library Journal)

CHAPTER 1

Hearts for a Sweetheart Exciting news! There’s going to be a new member of the family—a baby cousin. Aunt Lulu and Uncle John don’t know yet if it’s going to be a boy—or a girl. Or if they do, they’re not telling—so I designed a unisex onesie that will work either way. Baby clothes are so cute, don’t you think? It’s hard to believe that right this minute, inside Aunt Lulu’s bump, there’s a tiny little person growing who is going to be wearing them someday. It’s hard to believe Marcus and I were once newborns, but Dad’s got the pictures to prove it. We spent a fun, but bittersweet, night looking at our baby albums. Marcus is so lucky because he actually remembers things about Mom. Me, I only know her through what other people have told me. The one thing pretty much everyone’s told me is that I’ve inherited her creativity for making clothes. What’s the sewing equivalent of a “chip off the old block”? “Hey, Zoey, do you think these buttons would look cute as decorations for a little cross-body purse?” Zoey Webber and Allie Lovallo—a fellow fashion blogger who until recently had dated Zoey’s older brother, Marcus—were browsing at their favorite store, A Stitch in Time. Even though they’d been friends before Allie and Marcus had started dating, the fact that Allie was seeing someone else and had hurt Marcus so much caused a rift in their friendship, one that Allie was trying to mend by regularly inviting Zoey to hang out. “Those are cute, but maybe a little big?” Zoey said. “I’d be afraid they might catch on a door handle and break or something. What about these instead?” She pointed to some iridescent purple and blue glass buttons. “Good point,” Allie said. “And those are fab.” She took a few sets and put them in her shopping basket. Zoey found small heart-shaped buttons she was thinking of using for the baby outfit she was making for her cousin-to-be. “Those are adorable!” Allie exclaimed. “You’re going to have so much fun making things for your new cousin.” “I know,” Zoey said, grabbing plastic snaps and zippers. “I went to Peek-a-Boo to get some ideas, and everything there was just soooooo cute and teensy, like little doll’s clothes.” The two girls went to the cash register to pay Jan, the owner of A Stitch in Time, for their fashion finds. “I like your choices,” Jan said. “And of course, my favorite young designers get the special up-and-comer discount.” “Thanks, Jan!” Zoey said. Jan’s discounts really helped her get more for her money. “Thanks, Jan,” Allie echoed. “Hey, Zoey, can I buy you a hot chocolate with the money I just saved?” “Sounds yummy!” Zoey said. “But, Allie, you don’t have to do that . . . .” Allie paused. “I want to.” “Whatever you do, enjoy!” Jan called after them as they waved good-bye. “And get extra whipped cream.” At the nearby coffee shop, Allie and Zoey settled into two plush chairs near the front window with their mugs of hot chocolate. The girls chatted about fashions they’d seen in the latest issue of Très Chic, which they’d both received in the mail the previous day. During a lull in the conversation, Allie picked at a loose thread on the chair’s upholstery. “So . . . have you ever thought about getting a booth at the Mapleton gift fair?” she asked as Zoey took a cautious sip from her still-steaming mug. “I did it last year, and it was really fun.” Allie blew on her hot chocolate to cool it. “I also sold a lot of stuff. Maybe you should apply for a booth this year!” Zoey considered the idea. It wasn’t something she’d ever thought of doing, but now that Allie mentioned it, she could see the possibilities. “It would be kind of cool to sell directly to people for a change,” she said. Zoey had only ever sold her clothing online and to friends and neighbors—never in an actual store. “It’s also a great way to get customer feedback,” Allie said. “Even when people don’t buy things, you get to see which items they pick up and look at the most.” Zoey placed her hot chocolate on the table as she got to the question that was really worrying her about the idea. “Is it expensive to rent a booth?” she asked. “You can pick a booth size that fits your budget when you fill out the application,” Allie replied. She went on to explain that the organizers of the gift fair asked applicants to send pictures of their work, and they tried not to accept too many vendors with the same kind of merchandise. It was a carefully curated gift fair. “Do you think I’d have a chance with a Sew Zoey booth?” Zoey asked. “Yes! You should apply!” Allie said. “It would be fun to do the fair together.” “I’ll definitely think about it,” Zoey said. “Great,” Allie said. She looked down at her phone and smiled. Something about the look on her face made Zoey think it was about Oliver, the boy Allie had started seeing when she’d broken up with Marcus. “Are you still seeing that guy?” Zoey asked. Allie blushed and put away her phone. “Yes, we’re still going out.” Zoey decided to change the subject back to the safer topic of clothes. They spent the rest of the time talking about their current design projects. Zoey enjoyed being able to talk to someone who understood fashion the way Allie did—so much that she was able to relax and almost forget that Allie had ever dated her brother and hurt his feelings by breaking up with him. Well, at least until Allie pulled into the driveway to drop her back home. “So . . . how’s Marcus doing these days?” Allie asked. There was an awkward silence as Zoey tried to figure out what she should or shouldn’t say. She wished they could agree to not discuss her brother if they were going to stay friends. “He’s okay,” Zoey said finally. “You know, he’s . . . moving on.” “That’s good to hear,” Allie said. Zoey really didn’t want to talk about her brother with his ex-girlfriend. She’d spent enough time playing an uncomfortable intermediary between the two of them. “Well, gotta go,” Zoey said, opening the car door to get out. “It was good to hang out again,” Allie called after her. “And don’t forget to think about the gift fair!” “I won’t!” Zoey promised, and shut the door. As Allie drove off, Zoey wondered how long it would take before things were 100 percent back to normal between them. She hoped it was sooner rather than later. Being in friendship limbo was really awkward. Marcus was in the kitchen snacking on peanut butter and an apple when Zoey walked in. “Was that Allie’s car?” he asked. “Yeah,” Zoey said, hoping he wouldn’t ask any uncomfortable questions. “She wants me to apply for a booth at the gift fair.” “Did she ask about me?” “She asked how you were.” Zoey sighed. “What did you say?” “I said you were moving on,” Zoey said. “And what did she say?” Marcus asked. “She said ‘good,’ or something like that,” Zoey said. “That’s all?” Marcus looked disappointed that Allie hadn’t been more interested in the topic of, well, him. “Yeah, that’s all,” Zoey said. “I’m going upstairs.” “Hey, Zo?” Zoey stopped in the doorway and then turned back to face her brother. “I’m glad you guys are hanging out again despite . . . you know, everything,” he said. “I know Allie’s one of the few people who understands what it’s like to be a fashion whiz.” Zoey breathed a sigh of relief. “I’m glad too,” she said. “I missed talking to her.” “I just want you to know I’m okay with it,” Marcus said. “At least, I’m trying really hard to be all mature and grown-up and everything.” “Thanks, Marcus,” Zoey said. “I appreciate it. I really do!” “Enough to let me eat the last brownie, even though I’ve already had three?” Marcus asked with a hopeful grin. “Wow, that’s a tough call,” Zoey said. But then she smiled. “Yeah, go ahead. I’m full from the hot chocolate, anyway!” During lunch in school the next day, Zoey floated the idea of the gift fair to her friends. “What do you think?” she asked. “I like the idea, but I’m worried about all the money I’d have to lay out in advance for the booth. What happens if I don’t sell enough to cover it?” “I think it’s a fashiontastic idea! It’ll be like a real clothing store!” Priti Holbrooke said. “Why haven’t you done something like this before?” “She’s sold her clothes on Etsy,” Kate Mackey pointed out. “And Allie and I did the pop-up store on Etsy, too,” Zoey said. “But this would be the first time people could see your clothes in person,” Priti countered. The girls considered this as they ate their lunches. “I guess that’s true. Shopping’s more fun when you can really see what you’re getting,” Libby Flynn said. “Especially when it comes to clothes.” “But what if I don’t make back the money I have to pay for the booth?” Zoey worried. “Also, I’m jumping the gun. You have to apply to be selected.” “You took a risk with Doggie Duds, and that worked out,” Kate reminded her. Zoey thought back on all the risky projects she’d attempted in the last year or so. They certainly hadn’t been without their nail-biting moments, but they’d always turned out okay in the end. “Why wouldn’t they select you for the gift fair?” Priti argued. “You’ve been on Fashion Showdown! Bryn Allen was on the cover of Celebrity magazine, wearing one of your designs. I mean, you’re practically . . . world famous!” Zoey burst out laughing. “Stop, Priti! You’re making me blush!” she said. “I’m hardly world famous.” Zoey reached into her backpack. “Speaking of gift fairs, I’ve got some gifts for you guys.” She handed each of her friends unique versions of the fabric bracelet she’d previously copied for Ivy Wallace when Emily Gooding was nagging Ivy to buy one. The bracelets were all the rage after having been featured in a recent issue of Très Chic magazine. Libby’s was made of two different fabrics—one printed with little candies and the other with little carrots—to remind her of how hard she’d worked for the local food pantry for her Bat Mitzvah project. Kate’s fabric was covered in daisies, because those were her favorite flowers. Zoey figured a flowery bracelet was a subtle way for Kate to bring florals into her look. And Zoey had made Priti’s bracelet with a fabric printed with stars, to signify her friend’s love of being in the spotlight. “Wow!” Libby said. “I love it! I’ve been wanting one of these bracelets ever since I saw them in Très Chic!” “These are just like the ones Emily brags about all the time,” Kate, who was more into reading about sports than fashion, said. “I love mine!” Priti said. “It’s so me!” “I’m touched you remembered daisies are my favorite flowers, Zoey,” Kate said. “But . . . why did you buy us presents when it’s not anyone’s birthday?” “I didn’t buy them,” Zoey explained. “I made them.” Priti and Libby stared at her, shocked. “I knew I hadn’t seen these fabric patterns before, but I thought you had some kind of special connection or something,” Libby said. “Like, maybe you got them before the general public could.” “No,” Zoey said. “I just made them myself, inspired by the ones in Très Chic and, well, everywhere.” “Are you allowed to do that?” Priti asked. “Why not?” Zoey said. Priti shrugged. “I don’t know. Never mind.” She put on her bracelet and held out her arm. “I love the design, though.” “Oh! Now I get the design on mine,” Libby said. “It’s about my mitzvah project, right?” “That’s right!” Zoey said. “The candy is for the sweets theme, and the carrots are because you grew vegetables and raised the money for the new fridge for the food pantry.” “That’s so cool!” Libby said. “Although I have to admit that I’m glad my Bat Mitzvah is over—well, except for writing all the thank-you notes. That’s taking forever.” “You must have hundreds to write,” Priti said. “I haven’t counted, but it’s a lot!” Libby said. “I’m pacing myself. I try to do a few every night and then some on the weekends, when I’m not volunteering at the food pantry, just so I can get them over with.” She looked over at Kate. “That reminds me . . . I haven’t seen you and Tyler at the food pantry lately.” “That’s because we’re not going out anymore,” Kate said. “Wait, what?!” Priti exclaimed. “When did that happen? And why?” “We decided about a week ago,” Kate said. “And you didn’t tell us?” Priti said. Kate shrugged. “But why did you break up?” Zoey asked. “Don’t get me wrong—Tyler’s a nice guy and all. But it’s not like we spent that much time together,” Kate explained. “And then we fought at Libby’s Bat Mitzvah—” “But you worked that out, didn’t you?” Zoey said. “Kind of,” Kate said. “But in the end, we realized we were better off as friends.” She looked around the table at the other girls’ concerned faces. “It’s the best thing. Really.” “Are you sure?” Libby asked. “You guys seemed to have fun together at the food pantry.” “We can still have fun, but as friends,” Kate said. She smiled. “I’m okay with it. Really, I am.” Kate’s smile was genuine, but Zoey couldn’t help wondering if her friend seemed just a little . . . too okay. She resolved to investigate further.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but this is an excellent addition to my Christopher Woods collection By Deb Normally I don't care much for books this short, but this is an excellent addition to my Christopher Woods collection. Where the first book was more action/adventure, this one gives you a view of the political landscape and fleshes out the world some more. While action doesn't feel like the main focus there was still enough to make it feel like what we are all used to from a book by this author. I will look forward to number three.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Book! By Jamie Probably the best book in the series for me. the final chapter had me fully gripped and wondering what was going to happen. I sure didn't see it coming. I can't wait to find out what happens and I surely hope a few vamps get what's coming to them.

I really enjoyed this book and can't believe what Ben has had to go through. He has got the weight of the world on his shoulders, so many tough decisions need to be made and it is hard to know who he can trust. Bella keeps you guessing all the way through. I almost screamed when I got to the end and realised that I would have to wait again for the answers I so desperately need! I just hope that things turn out ok for everyone we love, I even felt sorry for characters that I previously hated which just goes to show how well Bella writes. So much happened in such a short space of time and now we are all left reeling and counting down the days until we can open book 21 and find out what happens next! Another amazing read, thank you Bella!

The Sor'ee concludes the story from The Protector Through a near miracle, and mostly because of the unique magic controlled by the Young Mage NikNik, the humans have come out on top of their first string of encounters with the ancient human enemy, the Sor'ee. The large force that had invaded the lands around the ancient capital of Cha'pol have been eliminated. But the war is clearly not over. The Matdavian Oracles have promised as much as two years before the fearsome Sor'ee would return after the devastating defeat they have suffered at the hands of NikNik. But is is barely more than half that long when the surprise attack comes, with devastating results. Arif, Bhdl, and the others members of the group who have embarked on the long journey to the southern lands to raise an army of Mages and guardsmen are called to return to Ausfaria as soon as possible. Yahfe fears the forces at Mel'ton might be overrun before that can happen. After returning to Mel'ton, where the new fortress sits on the land formerly occupied by the ruins of the ancient village, they make preparations to take the war to the home of the Sor'ee which has been located by Ko'lat, Arif's Nys'as friend. Unfortunately, their plans do not go precisely as hoped. The Sor'ee soon prove themselves more intelligent, technologically advanced, and prepared for the battle to come than the humans expect. The fading magic also complicates every effort to confront the enemy, and the human forces find themselves on the losing end of too many of the encounters. Several unplanned discoveries provide key insights to guide the humans, including Bhdl's discovery of the magical brand that will alter the balance of power in the conflict. The problem that remains is how, short of complete annihilation, can a permanent solution to be found to the Sor'ee and their kind?

Book 2 is a great conclusion to this saga By G Allen SOR’EE is the conclusion of the lost Protector Saga which Blink first published as “The Protector” (see my review on Amazon). SOR’EE is an outstanding book and provides and exciting conclusion to this story. The main character, Arif, continues to grow as a leader. If you like reading about new weapons using magic being used in battles along with new magic being discovered by the true blood mage’s this book is for you. The humans winning against the SOR’EE is in question which keep your interest. SOR’EE brings this story to an exciting conclusion with lots of battles and new magic capability for the true blood mage’s. However, in the end you cannot imagine what happened to the SOR’EE. You need to read the book to find out.In summary I especially enjoyed the well thought out magic systems and the interactions between the characters and this is the reason I give the book five stars.

When they were too impoverished to raise their families, ancient Sumerians sold their children into bondage. Slave women in Rome faced never-ending household drudgery. The ninth-century Zanj were transported from East Africa to work the salt marshes of Iraq. Cotton pickers worked under terrible duress in the American South.Ancient history? Tragically, no. In our time, slavery wears many faces. James Kofi Annan's parents in Ghana sold him because they could not feed him. Beatrice Fernando had to work almost around the clock in Lebanon. Julia Gabriel was trafficked from Arizona to the cucumber fields of South Carolina.Five Thousand Years of Slavery provides the suspense and emotional engagement of a great novel. It is an excellent resource with its comprehensive historical narrative, firsthand accounts, maps, archival photos, paintings and posters, an index, and suggestions for further reading. Much more than a reference work, it is a brilliant exploration of the worst - and the best - in human society.

High school through college and general lending collections will find this a winning survey By Midwest Book Review Five Thousand Years of Slavery provides a powerful history of world slavery processes as a whole, from ancient Sumerians who sold their children to slave women in Rome and American blacks. History accounts, firsthand accounts, maps, photos and paintings explore circumstances of slavery in human culture, with a special focus on world slavery today linking past to present. Any library strong in world history and social issues from high school through college and general lending collections will find this a winning survey.

Expanding Your Knowledge about Slavery By Henry Zoob Five Thousand Years of Slavery really expanded my perception of the depth and breadth of slavery. I was surprised to learn how extensive slavery was in the ancient world and how pervasive it is in the world today. The book is well written and the format and illustrations are excellent. I think that the book is an ideal survey about slavery for adults and children from the age of twelve up.

A decent resource By April Perlowski Five Thousand Years of SlaveryMarjorie Gann and Janet WillenTundra Books2011A Librarything Early Reviewer book.Five Thousand Years of Slavery is a non-fiction history of slavery aimed at a young adult audience.Areas covered are: The Ancient Near East, Ancient Greece and Rome, Europe in the Middle Ages, Slavery under Islam, Africa, The Americas, South America and the Caribbean, British Abolition, North America, The United States, Asia and the Southern Pacific, and The Modern World. This is a very ambitious amount of information to try to cover in 159 pages of texts. In the end, some subjects are covered sparingly while others are covered in depth. Most of the book is focused on the middle ages to the 20th century. The areas it covers well, it covers very well. I am now much more familiar with slavery in the British and French colonies. What the book doesn't do well, is retain the interest of the reader (or at least, this one). The text is very dry.The section on the modern world is very short and sparse. I expected more, based on the cover and the afterword.A note on the bibliography: It is in an awkward format and incomplete, the authors recommend going to their website to view the full works cited. What I would have liked to see: more on modern slavery and human trafficking, and "for further information" works listed to the side of the text. All in all, a dry, but interesting and informative resource on slavery.3 1/2 stars.

Now, just before his high school graduation, he embarks on an epic quest of self-discovery. He learns of a mysterious city called Boatlantis, where boats are at the top of the social ladder. Can it be true? Has he finally found the place where a half boy/half boat belongs? Or will he always be torn between two worlds?

Teen Boat! The Race for Boatlantis, by Dave Roman

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—Teen Boat, a teen boy who can transform into a yacht, returns for another adventure in this sequel to Teen Boat! (Clarion, 2012). When given the chance to live full-time as a boat in Boatlantis with his submarine father, he is torn. Is he a boat or a boy? Teen Boat also finds a nemesis in TeenBot, a boy who's part-boy, part-robot, and part captain's chair. Then Teen Boat finds out that his best friend Joey descends from a boat's mortal enemy: icebergs. Older, savvier readers may not embrace the goofy concept, but younger tweens and teens will enjoy the numerous boat puns and the bright, cheerful cartoon illustrations. With its wholesome hero and high school love triangles, this work is "Archie" (DC Comics) with boats. VERDICT A light, silly read with middle school appeal.—Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. What if you could turn into a boat? By Shevi Teen Boat is a graphic novel for kids about a teenage boy named Teen Boat, who can turn into a small yacht. He doesn't know that his best friend--a girl named Joey Steinberg--has a crush on him. T.B. has a crush on another girl in school, and Joey is heart-broken and angry when, instead of asking her to the prom, T.B. tries to get Joey to help him ask the other girl out for him. Joey befriends the new boy in school, a rich kid with robotic parts, nicknamed Teen Bot. A boat race is announced, and Teen Boat discovers that the winner of the race will get to go to the secret city of Boatlantis, where sentient boats live. Who will win the race? Who will end up together? And what's the story behind Boatlantis? The first half of this graphic novel isn't that interesting, feeling something like an Archie comic, if Archie were some kind of Transformer that turned into a small yacht. The story makes little sense and is inconsistent. For example, in beginning of the story, T.B. can't help turning into a boat when he gets wet and can't turn back into a human until he completely dries. Later when he is on a ramp at sea, though, he turns into a boat and back into a human instantly at will. The second half of the graphic novel is much better, but it feels rushed. T.B. is a rather self-absorbed main character, and not very likable, though he does become more likable as the story progresses. There are lots of jokes, although none of them are laugh-out-loud funny. I don't want to give anything away, but there are some things that happen in the story more because they're common cliches rather than because they make sense for the story. And they don't make sense. Neither does the idea of people being married to and having kids with objects, even if they are sentient. The story is weak and uneven, but it does end well. The drawings, on the other hand, are very good. The artist does a brilliant job of drawing a boy turning into a boat, not an easy task. The artist also manages to draw each character differently, which I like. Some cartoonists will give every character essentially the same face and body, but here each character has a different face shape, features, and stance. I like that. There's one panel with a goof in that Teen Bot's hand is drawn backward, but aside from that small mistake, the drawings are first rate. This isn't a great children's book, but it is fun enough. I imagine that boys between nine and twelve who like graphic novels and boats will love this.

It's a boy that transforms into a boat. It's pretty immature and silly stupid. My dad would have loved it when he was a kid, but he was the type of man who thought the Police Academy movies were hilarious... But I guess I did watch "Turbo Teen" when I was little which is about a boy who turns into a car.I'm not saying it's bad. It's a fun light read. I'm not sad I read it before letting my son read it. I definitely smiled a few times. But my eyes rolled back into my head a number of times too!I really didn't like the euphenism exclaimed: "Motha Ruddar". I don't want my son to start thinking of things he can say close to other curse words. I don't think the exclamation was necessary or added to the story. If the kids don't get it, they don't get it. But I got it and it bothers me that it's in my kid's book. Other than that, there's not much objectionable. The teen boat has his first kiss. Authority figures are kinda blown off but not disobeyed (mainly not present). It has some teen focus with the prom, liking a girl, and the first kiss. I'm not sure if my pre-teen son will like that focus, but I think he's really love the imaginative immaturity level of the rest of the book. I think a young teen would fit in with the plot better, but I'm not sure if they would be willing to go along with the whole kid/boat thing (and the "stupid" things just keep coming throughout the book). But overall, it's a pretty fun little diversion. I think my son will like reading it, so still suggest it.

The premise alone, the only boy in the school that can morph from a boy to a boat is a pretty random way to set up a book for teen conformity angst. And it gets even more whacked from there, while somehow staying in a real world setting of a high school and community. The maturity level is strangely eclectic as well. The wackiness seems fit for 8-12, the high school setting and drama seems to be 14-17, and some of the jokes are clearly sent over their heads to parents. There were a few things I felt were perhaps a little mature for young readers like nautical puns for swear words and (spoiler alert) a woman who is impregnated by a submarine. But all in all, it is so ridiculous that it holds all readers. It is a quick read, very visual with very good, although almost computer generatedly clean graphics. It lacks an artistic looseness, but is visually wonderful. The dialogue is cleanly written and was easy for all readers from 8 to middle aged. None of us really put it down after we picked it up. Great, engaging book. We use these for road trips and it did the trick of passing 30-45 minutes per reader.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wow...Just Wow! By MissPhyre If there is one thing I have come to expect from Stormy Smith, it is that she as a tendency to out-do herself with each book she puts out. Bound By Prophecy is no exception to that.We start off right where Bound By Spells ended. This is another book that you will not want to put down. I decided to live tweet as I read this and, as much fun as it was, I hated putting my kindle down to tweet my reactions. {you can read my tweets by clicking here – No spoilers} I was reading as much as I could any chance that I got. I already want to go back and re-read the whole series beginning to end. While in the beginning it isn’t all action, action, action, the story in no way feels slow. There is still a lot going on we need to know about before we dive into the fray. We get a few answers and about a million more questions, but mystery is one of the many things that makes the Bound Series so amazing. Another is that Stormy Smith never takes the story where you expect it to go. I am constantly surprised. More than once I had to re-read a passage or two to make sure it had really just happened!Amelia is still her stubborn self but we do see some growth in her. She is more thoughtful and less impulsive. Her relationship with Aidan continues to grow as well. I love that Aidan goes all ‘alpha’ on us but is still able to keep himself in the process. Of course I can’t leave out B! This girl is the best friend everyone wishes they had and she is still that in Prophecy. I love that we get to see her happy in the end, though I never ever expected how that happiness would come about!! I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Micah and I’m hoping to hear a little more of what happens for him after the end of Prophecy *hint*hint* My dear Cole was always my favorite male character in the Bound series. I love all the big-brother protectiveness. He will to whatever he can for Ame, not thinking of what it might cost him. I’m so happy we get to have little Dillon running about here and there. I love that little bug and, like Amelia, I want to carry him around in my pocket! We briefly meet a few of the women from Spells. One of which is Willow. She intrigued me and carved herself a little place in my heart with her actions and kind words. I’m also hoping to hear a little more of what happens for her after the end of Prophecy (*hint*hint* Stormy!……please?)Have you ever picked up a book, starting reading and it resonated so deeply that you think there couldn’t have been a better time for you to have read it? That is what Bound By Prophecy was for me. That is how much I love this book. My life took an unexpected turn so I dove into this book hoping for a distraction. What I got was so much more than that. It was comfort. It was wisdom. It was the help I didn’t know I needed. Even putting all of that aside, I was blown away by how much Stormy Smith has grown as a writer. The story flows unlike anything I have read before with so many turns you never know where your destination truly lies.I would give Bound By Prophecy a million stars, but alas the highest rating is 5. So I guess I’ll settle for putting 5 stars.

Bound by Prophecy, the much anticipated ending to the Bound series…I feel like this is usually the point where I tell you how bittersweet this ending was, because while it was AWESOME, it was also the END. But here’s the thing, I can’t say it was anything other than sweet. Smith did a wonderful job wrapping everything up while still leaving other story lines open for more to come in the future, which I LOVED! So you really got the feeling that while this particular story line has come to it’s end, the fantastic world that has been created here is not finished yet.I thought I had a good idea of what was going to happen in this book before hand, but let me tell you it went about things in a very different way than I had anticipated. I thoroughly enjoyed some of the twists and where they took the story as a whole. Even one of the romance plot lines threw me for a loop, but I actually thought it made a lot of sense in the end, and it made me super excited for the way that it left a certain someone open for new and thrilling possibilities! It was really fabulous to see everyone come back together in the end. I loved that you got lots of Aidan and Amelia time. Even while things were moving forward full force, there was plenty of growth and sweet moments between the two lovebirds which I appreciated. Now we desperately need to talk about Micah *ahem…Jennifer*It’s no secret that Micah has been my championed underdog in this story since book one, which is really saying something since he definitely made some mistakes and was a part of things that made his alliances seem sketchy. But I KNEW in my heart that he was a good guy and he would come through it all on the right side! And if you’ve read our previous reviews here at Bookworm Coalition then you already know that Jen and I have never seen eye to eye when it comes to dear Micah.NOW after the dust has settled, the million dollar question I am dying to know….what say you now Jennifer????!!!Now seems as good of a time as any to hand over the reigns to Jen and let her tell you her thoughts on everything (like her newfound Micah love!)… NOOOO!!Ok, so maybe, just maybe I like Micah a tiny small itty bitty more. Doesn’t change everything that has happened in this series. That’s all you get about that. I have been burned too many times by Micah and it takes way more than a few hundred pages to change my mind. I mean, really…even Bethany (literally all I heard was, “Yes, Tricia, you were right all along!”)HA!!I will not even tell you!Let me just say that Charlie and Onyx…mind blown! There are so many different things that happened in here that I would love to shout out to the world and spoil the whole darn thing for you, but I think this one needs to be a surprise.I’m not going to lie, I had a certain expectation before I started this book. I did not get what I was expecting, I got something that was completely different. One of my all time favorite things made an appearance towards the end, and quite honestly it was the one thing that I loved most. There is so much character growth in this book. People maturing, and taking charge. Doing what needs to be done to take their world back. The evil of the Queen and the surprisingly deceptive Rhi. Reading what the Queen didn’t know was almost heartbreaking. Then of course, I remembered that she was bats**t crazy!I love how this book has been left an open ending. Bound by Prophecy was an ending to a chapter in the lives of Aidan, Amelia, Micah, Bethany, Cole, Baleon and all the others we have come to love. Prophecy is not the end of this amazing world, there is still a whole world of Immortals that is waiting to be explored.Thank you so much Stormy Smith for allowing us to be included in this amazing journey! Yes, thank you Stormy, and I know I speak for both of us when I say we really look forward to what you come up with next! We received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Solid trilogy conclusion!! By Lenore L Kosinski 4.5 stars -- Another fabulous beta read!!Solid conclusion to the Amelia/Aidan trilogy! I really appreciated all the little tie-ins with things from the previous 2 books. And holy cow did some things go in a completely different direction than I was expecting! Totally kept me on my toes.I always find it difficult to review the final books in a series, b/c I don't want to give things away!! Plus, at this point I think my reading slump has instead turned into a review slump where I'm just not sure what to write to convey my feelings. So my feelings.... Well, this book picks up right where we left off at the end of Bound by Spells. The chemistry between Amelia and Aidan is still delicious. Amelia wasn't always my favourite heroine, she could be a bit too...stubborn? No, that's not it. Regardless, she's still that Amelia in this one, but she's tempered a bit more with patience and thoughtfulness. I appreciated the consistency in her character but showing that growth as well. Aidan was actually a bit more alpha male than I was expecting. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it caught me off guard here and there. You know who was the surprise winner for me?? MICAH!!! I have been transformed into a card carrying Micah fan. That boy just walked in, grabbed my heart and wouldn't let go. Even when his story went in a slightly different direction than I was expecting, I was still all in. And Baleon became so much more too!! Definitely my surprising fave characters of this book. It didn't hurt that we got a few chapters from Micah's perspective. All in all this was a winner for me. And if my guess is right, then I can't wait for a spin off!!

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Wow...just wow. By Bettina I've been an avid P.A. fiction reader since The Stand. I rarely review books because I'm too busy reading to bother but half way through this novel, I had to stop and type this long winded review. Pavement Ends is one of my new favorite novels. The story line is fascinating and the editing is spot on. The characters are believable and Mr. Gepner does an amazing job of fleshing out their personalities. After reading this particular genre of fiction for so many years, a lot of the individual scenarios tend to feel like repeat stories but this book has kept me guessing what comes next. I find myself racing through the story and being surprised at the way it unfolds which is what makes books so engrossing! The surprises are original and imaginative and I can only say I hope Mr. Gepner continues with these characters and their stories. I will be watching his author page for new releases. Great story!

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Don't waste your time By Michael Fronczak I hate to crush authors that obviously put in a lot of time & effort into their work, but this book...it's just...bad. And poorly written. The dialogue between characters made me cringe. The lack of research (as other reviewers have mentioned) is glaring, and there is too much that "just happens", usually when the writer can't come up with a plausible explanation.Perhaps worse than the story/plot/lack of research is the general writing. Sometimes, less is better but every statement or conversation is punctuated with some some sort of descriptive word that seems to have been added just because. The whole "show, don't tell" thing doesn't exist in this book. It interrupts the flow (what little there is) of the story, and reminded me of stories that I read as a kid in grade school. I don't think the author could adequately convey feelings and emotions without spoon feeding the reader.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. It could've been so much better By Robert Sisk I wanted to lime it. I really, really did. There were too many visual details. They kept getting in the way of the story. Readers don't need to know where everyone put their hands, their body positions when they spoke, etc. The dynamics between the families were so bazaar. The conversations were just as choppy and scattered. I did like the scientific explanation of things. But I just couldn't get into it at all. Plot was good, just overshadowed by randomness.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Treasure By Holly Raphael This book was an impulse buy because it was inexpensive but it has become one of my family's favorites. A beautiful, lyrical retelling of the bible tale with wonderful pictures and incredible insight into human nature. My three year old loves it and even quotes from it occasionally. What a delight!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very nice retelling By txjanet The pictures are very beautiful, and the story well told and expanded from the Bible version, while still remaining true to it, for explanation and understanding. I really liked the art, and its different feels of the warm desert colors, the cool ocean colors, and the way the story is expanded in the details of the art (ie you can look at the picture of the Assyrian city and see different people doing "wicked" things, some people hungry while others are feasting, some people using others as slaves to do hard work, some people robbing others, etc). I would say that this telling is probably for children a little older, probably 6 or 7 years plus. My 5 year old enjoys it, but I don't think she really understands what is going on in the story --not the fault of the telling, just that this is a complicated story to explain, and this one goes a little deeper than just telling how he was inside a fish for three days. This book will grow with us.

A Wrinkled Heart is a touching and delightful story about learning to be kind to others. This book is based on a folktale long used by teachers around the world. One beautiful morning, Elliott, a young bunny, joyfully gets up and ready for his school day. At breakfast, he is scolded for spilling some milk, and his heart wrinkles a little bit. At school, Elliott encounters some friends who hurt his feelings and his heart wrinkles even more… until it's all wrinkled up! Later, his friends and family apologize for their hurtful words and try to take the wrinkles out. Elliott feels better, but some wrinkles get left behind. He decides to always be careful with his words so he doesn't wrinkle anyone's heart. Readers learn the importance of kindness, friendship and the Golden Rule. A Wrinkled Heart is the perfect tool for teachers, school counselors and parents to help develop empathy in preschoolers and elementary children, and can be used as part of a lesson plan on character and social development. The charming, yet sophisticated illustrations by Lindy Burnett, draw you right into the woodland life of little Elliott, his family, and forest friends. There is a page with "Simple Ways to be Kind to Others" and an activity for cutting out a paper heart to wrinkle as the story is told…. a perfect visual aid!

This book somehow already seems like a childhood favorite, one of the books that you kept as you grew up and gave all your kids books away. An especially fine debut for Tracy Hoexter. I'll be watching for more.

Serpentine, by Cindy Pon

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Skybright never knew her parents. She was raised by an affluent Chinese family who took her into their home to be a handmaid to their daughter, Zhen Ni. The two grew up as close as sisters, best friends and confidants who shared everything. Skybright loves her mistress, but as both girls grow up, changes start to occur. While Zhen Ni finds love in a new friendship, Skybright discovers a new side of herself, one filled with darkness. She fights to balance her duties, the love she has for another, and this evil within herself. Skybright struggles to maintain her true self, as well as to hide what she is becoming from her closest friend. The teen doesn't know who she is anymore. Is she a servant, a friend, a lover, or a demon? Could she be all of these things, or must she choose one? This coming-of-age story takes readers on a fantastical journey through friendship and Chinese mythology. YA fans will love Pon's storytelling ability and the immersion into a world filled with love, danger, and fantasy. VERDICT Readers will be begging for a sequel to find out what happens to these intriguing characters.—Jessica Strefling, US Court of Appeals, Federal Circuit Library (starred review)

Review "This fast-paced fantasy adventure is set in an ancient China of folklore, the same land as Pon’s previous books. Pon’s descriptive writing conjures precise images, as in when describing Skybright’s transformation from human to serpent: “Smooth scales rippled over her human flesh, like dragonfly wings fluttering their way from her feet to cover her abdomen.”At its core, the novel is about friendship, loyalty, and self-acceptance, with characters as delightfully real as any in the realm of young adult literature." —Diane Colson, VOYA Magazine (starred review) “The economical narrative conjures an entire world, drenched in color and texture and scent, rich in evocative mythology and heady action, and filled with vivid characters . . . A fast-paced and engrossing read for anyone weary of the same old hackneyed storylines.”  —Kirkus Reviews"Serpentine's world oozes with lush details and rich lore, and the characters crackle with life. This is one story that you'll want to lose yourself in."  —Marie Lu, author, Prodigy“Vivid worldbuilding, incendiary romance, heart-pounding action, and characters that will win you over--I highly recommend Serpentine.”   —Cinda Williams Chima, author, The Warrior Heir"Serpentine is unique and surprising, with a beautifully-drawn fantasy world that sucked me right in! I love Skybright's transformative power, and how she learns to take charge of it.”  — Kristin Cashore, author, Bitterblue“YA fans will love Pon's storytelling ability and the immersion into a world filled with love, danger, and fantasy. Readers will be begging for a sequel to find out what happens to these intriguing characters.”  —School Library Journal (starred review)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Features a fantastic friendship By Zoey Talbon Reviewing Serpentine is hard because I didn't have particularly strong feelings about it in either direction. In the beginning, I thoroughly enjoyed the writing but wasn't totally invested in the story. And that's pretty much how it went the entire way. The story definitely did get more intriguing, but it didn't feel as if it had enough intricate and fleshed-out details to seem believable, and so instead I found myself rolling my eyes sometimes.Still, the mythology of Serpentine is something I haven't seen a ton of before, which was refreshing. I felt so immersed in the setting and could picture it so easily. The dark forests, the huge manor, the monks right next door. I know I already used the word refreshing, but it applies here as well.Another good thing that Serpentine does? It tells its tale through the handmaiden rather than the privileged girl who owns the handmaiden. It's obviously not the first book to do so, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a nice break from the upper class. However, Skybright and her mistress, Zhen Ni, are practically sisters. They've known each other since they were babies, grown up together. But there's still a pretty big divide, if you ask me. Zhen Ni is still a mistress. Skybright can never herself marry or have children, and sometimes I feel like the book didn't really make a big enough deal of that. Now, those are things that I don't personally want, but the thing is that I have that choice. I have an option to want it, to do it someday. Skybright never has.Nevertheless, Skybright and Zhen Ni have quite a strong connection. Until, of course, they both start keeping their own secrets from each other. You just know that's not going to end well.As characters, I didn't find either of them particularly interesting. Maybe it's because I couldn't connect to them, I don't know. But not a single one of the characters in Serpentine was particularly remarkable to me. I didn't hate them, no. Skybright's love for Zhen Ni and her strength as she dealt with her own changes were important, sure. But beyond that I just . . . didn't care much, I guess. I was intrigued to find out what was going on with Skybright, where the story would go. But that wasn't really about her.The romance is probably where I have the strongest feelings, because it was just so unbelievable to me. It happened too fast and I didn't feel a genuine connection. I rolled my eyes. Quite a bit. They meet and talk a handful of times throughout the entire novel. In the beginning, Skybright sees Kai Sen for the first time from very far away and she suddenly can't stop thinking about him. Which kind of set the tone for the entire romance. And, of course, a third party sort of enters the picture and I just. WHY. NO THANKS.Of course, Serpentine also features a f/f relationship. YAY! FINALLY! I feel as if we didn't see enough of one of the characters involved, but it was still something nice to see, and it actually does play a part. (AKA it doesn't feel as if it was just thrown in to check off a box.) It's so unfamiliar to many of the characters in the book, unacceptable to some. It was a little heartbreaking to see the damage that simple love between two people could cause.Plotwise and in terms of what's happening to Skybright, it had its weak moments and its stronger moments. The stronger moments were definitely at the end where there were a few plot twists.tl;dr: Serpentine brings a lot of fresh stuff to the table - new mythology, a great setting, a f/f relationship. It features a strong female friendship. But for me, there's a bit of an execution problem. It was hard for me to stay interested and the romance between Skybright and Kai Sen wasn't believable. Still, I enjoyed the writing for the most part and did find a lot of stuff refreshing. Will I be reading the sequel? Probably not. But I do think Serpentine deserves 3 stars.

I was excited to read SERPENTINE because of the setting, which is based in large part on China. I wasn’t disappointed in this respect, but the setting was the only part of the book I was really able to get into. From the beginning, we’re immersed in the setting. I loved how well the details came to life all throughout the story, and it was nice to read a fantasy novel that wasn’t based on Europe. It also made me want to learn more about Chinese history, which isn’t something I’m as familiar with.I wasn’t into the characters at all. I realize that, as a handmaiden, Skybright is expected to fade into the background so as not to overshadow her mistress. But we spend the whole book in her head, so I was hoping there’d be more going on with her. For me, there wasn’t. She spends the whole book centered on the people around her – first her mistress, Zhen Ni, and then the boy she falls in love with, Kai – and we don’t really get to know who Skybright really is. While that isn’t necessarily unrealistic, it didn’t make for the most interesting narration. Also, the romance between Skybright and Kai fell flat for me, in large part because of my aforementioned issues with Skybright. The romance felt really underdeveloped for this reason. We also don’t get to know Kai very well; all I got was that he trains with the monks and that he’s fascinated by Skybright, so I couldn’t get into his character, either. The subplot with Zhen Ni was interesting, though. I don’t want to spoil it, so I won’t give specifics, but I’ll say that it was explored very well through Skybright’s eyes.I think people who prefer quieter heroines will probably have more luck with this one than I did.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Diversity in YA!!! By midnight reader It's fun that Pon returns to the Kingdom of XIa in Serpentine - I always enjoy her descriptions of the fantastical kingdom- but she creates a very different heroine in Skybright. As a handmaid in the ancient kingdom, Skybright will never marry, but that doesn't mean she doesn't experience the same emotional and physical changes of every other teen girl including her wealthy mistress Zhen Ni. Different life courses are mapped out for the two young women. Zhen Ni is expected to marry well. Skybright is expected to continue as her celibate handmaid. But one night, everything changes for Skybright. In a shocking and unique twist, Pon turns conventional mythology on its head and in the process Skybright's life course is altered. Zhen Ni faces her own challenges as her mother plots her eventual marriage. This thought provoking book is not the usual teen fantasy in many ways, the most obvious being the diversity of the characters! Hooray! I would follow the Library Guild guidelines and recommend this book to ages twelve and up.
