Sixteen-year-old Marni lives with her Gramps in a one-room shack, cultivating a magnificent flower garden that attracts villagers and noblemen alike. Only the invasive blue dragon flowers in her garden belie Marni’s secret: She is the niece of the king and the daughter of a dragon. When events force Marni to claim her rightful place as princess in her uncle’s court, King Roderick eyes the dragon-born girl with suspicion, blaming her for the enchanted, rapidly encroaching woods that are destroying his kingdom. Will the king kill Marni, as he did her mother, or will Marni get her revenge first? A rich, compelling fantasy for the wild at heart.

A Creature of Moonlight, by Rebecca Hahn

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—Marni lives in a shack at the edge of the woods with her Gramps, where she tends flowers, as she's done for most of her life. Yet change is afoot. As she's come of age, more and more male visitors have come to sit on the porch with Gramps while Marni lingers in the shadows. Perhaps even more disturbingly, the woods have begun creeping in inch by inch into the surrounding villages—but notably not around their own hut. If there was ever a time Marni should ignore the siren call of the voices in the woods, it is now, but she continues to escape there. It was these woods, after all, that had lured her princess mother away from the castle. Her mother was not the only girl lured by the voices, but she was the only to return—carrying the illegitimate "Dragon's" daughter and ultimately ending her own life, thereby sentencing Marni and her Gramps to a life of exile. Unexpectedly, Marni is thrust into life at court, and she must fight desperately to keep her independence while unraveling the mysteries of the encroaching woods and her birth. This book's greatest strength lies in the vivid woodland scenes and the rich detail that describes the mystical pieces of Marni's tale. The plot, however, plods along a bit, and, in the end, readers might wish that a little more had lurked beneath the surface. Fantasy fans who enjoy reveling more in the vision of a fantastical land and its creatures than an intricate and fast-paced plot will find much to love here.—Jill Heritage Maza, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Montclair, NJ

From Booklist Marni is the sole heir to a kingdom surrounded by a dangerous wood ruled by a powerful dragon and full of fantastic creatures, alluring magic, and trees whose seductive song lures young girls to abandon village life and run away to the forest. But instead of taking her rightful place on the throne, Marni is doomed to live in exile: her father is the dragon, and her mother was murdered for her transgression. When Marni’s grandfather—her sole protector—dies, and she’s sent to the court of her uncle, the king, she gets a taste of what a purely human life would be like. She can’t resist the call of the forest though, and soon, despite diligently planning to avenge her mother’s death, she seeks out her father in the woods. Told in a languorous, breathy first-person narrative, Hahn’s debut novel follows tenacious Marni as she tries to find a home between two vastly different worlds. Patient fantasy fans will appreciate this lyrical, character-driven story about a unique girl learning to find her place in an inhospitable world. Grades 8-10. --Sarah Hunter

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Fantasy by Debut Author By K. M. Martin A CREATURE OF MOONLIGHT was an exquisite fantasy filled with beautiful language and heart-wrenching choices. It is a story in three parts. In the first part, Marni lives with her Gramps in an isolated area growing flowers. As the story unfolds we learn that Marni is the niece of the king and that her Gramps gave up his throne to take care of her. Her mother had run into the woods and come back a year later with a baby. Marni is a dragon's child. The dragon is sending his woods to try to bring her back home. The woods near her home is filled with all sorts of magical creatures. Now that Marni is growing older, she is beginning to attract the attention of the peasant boys from the nearby village and the lords from the King's castle too.In the second part after her Gramps's death, Marni is taken to the castle where she has to deal with an uncle who hates her and courtiers who all want something from her. She has formed an alliance with the Lord of Ontrei who keeps asking her to marry him. This isn't what Marni wants though. She is just trying to find her footing in this strange environment. But when the trees keep moving closer and closer to the castle, her uncle decides that he needs to kill Marni as he killed her mother. In the third part, Marni escapes into the woods and meets the dragon who is her father. She also finds out what happens to all the young girls who run into the woods and are never seen again. But there is something in Marni that won't let her embrace the fate of those young girls. Her future lies in the world outside the woods. This story was so lyrically written that I was swept into the story and read it in just one day. There was so much lovely language to savor. I really liked Marni despite her bitterness and her desire for vengeance. I ached for the very hard choices she had to make.Fans of fantasy won't want to miss this amazing story by a debut author.

Farther from the woods than usual. It's one thing, now and then, for a stray bit of the woods to encroach. A well lost here, a path obstructed. Such things are to be expected. This summer is different. The entirety of the woods seems to be moving in leaps and bounds, creeping closer than they have in years.Marni knows the woods are dangerous place--a place of magic and wonder that often draws girls to it only to swallow them whole. Still, time and again, she finds herself sneaking there--away from Gramps, away from the prying eyes of the villagers who buy their flowers, away from the life that was snatched from her the day her mother was killed.Marni has always walked a narrow path between the life the was stolen and the life she has with her Gramps. But now, with the woods moving closer and promises being made, Marni will have to decide where she will stand in A Creature of Moonlight (2014) by Rebecca Hahn.A Creature of Moonlight is Hahn's first novel.Hahn masterfully weaves a world here where magic is as beautiful as it is dangerous--a world populated with calculating lords and kings as well as dragons and Phoenixes. Marni is a fascinating narrator, one who views both the humans and the woods with a healthy sense of skepticism. She is a strong heroine with a strong sense of self and an even stronger desire to secure her freedom. She also has a very strange twang to her entire narration that is more reminiscent of a novel set in the Depression Era west (or just the West) than it is to this bit of higher fantasy. Marni reckons about many things and is none too afraid to say so neither. Her voice is often extremely jarring as readers are drawn repeatedly out of the story to ponder the choice of words on the page. The story is typical coming of age fare as Marni learns more about both sides of her "family" such as they are and, over the course of the novel, comes into her own in various ways.A Creature of Moonlight is decidedly short on peripheral characters, making the time spent in Marni's head often claustrophobic as so much of the story centers on her inner conflicts. While her observations of the woods and at court are often entertaining and razor sharp, Marni's motivations are never as clear as they should be.While it is refreshing and modern to see Marni repeatedly turn down marriage proposals, the logic behind her deep conviction to not marry is murky at best--particularly given the specific set of obligations that will come with a life at court (which Marni adopts at one point in the plot).Though often unsatisfying, A Creature of Moonlight remains a solid debut from an author to watch.Possible Pairings: Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson, Fire by Kristin Cashore, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman, Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier, The Glass Casket by Templeman McCormick, The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab, Dust Girl by Sarah Zettel

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Simply... AMAZING!!!! By Bekah Awesome Book Nut Not much of a description, I know but I LOVED this book! I had a blast reading it and fell in love with Rebecca Hahn writing. Her writing style alone was magical and mystical for this story I just loved ever word she wrote. I felt the woods around me I could hear them singing, it was THAT good. I'm telling you, the writing alone I just loved. The tale is not one that think it is about which is great! Because when it comes to dragons we've gotten plenty of stories of people changing INTO them but not one quite like this one which is even better.Marni is a girl kept as a flower keeper's daughter where she spends her days growing flowers to sell to those who come for them. All Marni has is her grandfather to take care of and who tries to take care of her. It's a unique relationship one you really come to understand as the story progresses. Marni is drawn to the magical woods that sits just behind the house and garden where she lives and it constantly calls to her. She is warned to stay out and away from these woods because those enter never come back out, except one, her mother, who went it one day and months later comes back out...pregnant. To save the child's life the father of this girl takes the child and hides in the woods to raise the child alone, and safe from her Uncle who wishes to kill the child. Marni lives a very simple life but one she loves as she is near the woods she loves and the flowers she loves to tend plus a grandfather whom loves her and she loves him. I really enjoyed the strength of Marni, she is amazing and I truly loved her character. She is smart, resourceful, has wisdom that helps her through situations she never thought she find herself in.Without giving too much of this story away I would HIGHLY recommend this story. It's not what you think it's about, there are some amazing twists and turns you do not see coming. A nice underlining of possible romance that keeps you guessing-which I like. And a magical and mystical story that will keep you reading.Sexual Content: mildLanguage: mild (I think)Violence: moderate (some fight scene, a character getting killed)Drugs/Alcohol: mild (wine passed around at the dinner table)

Great book By Mitch Wood The essential guidebook for anyone traveling to Europe.I bought this as a gift for someone who is backpacking Europe later this year and stubbornly opted out of purchasing this book for themselves. Once received as a gift, it's been marked up, pages flagged, and used to create a pretty detailed itinerary. I've enjoyed seeing this book go to good use and wanted to share how helpful it's been!

By Marco A boy who accidentally blows things up, an old wizard who can move objects, and a red-haired girl who can kick ass, are sent on a quest by a child-like old earth goddess to find The One.  Add a telepathic wolf, a ninja skeleton, some dragons, a velociraptor, Mount Doom, the dark side of the force, and... a piano?Stormwielder is a well written, epic fantasy with a rich, if at times oddly familiar, cast. The reader is swept along, into the fray, from beginning to end, in this action-packed adventure. The occasional déjà vu and some highly unlikely twists and turns, I can forgive, but the ending...? I guess I’ll have to check out the sequel.

I got a sale / break on the price which made me purchase. It was a good story and characters. The ending caused me some shock but definitely left interested in the next book. Not sure how the next book will work out but I will very likely purchase.

O'Neil Stormwielder starts out with a young man named Eric traveling to a faraway medieval town to make a new start. We soon find out the boy has special powers after three ruffians attempt to Shanghai him. He is able to generate powerful storms, replete with lightening, but the storms are unfocused—harming many more than their intended victims. An innocent family is killed by the lightening, which leaves just their son Gabriel, alive. Gabriel pursues the young man, Eric, who caused the calamity but he is protected by a wizened older man with fighting skills. Gabriel, we come to find out has the ability to freeze things. The narrative reminds me of a medieval version of the X Men, with some of the Fifth Element pared down and put in. A pursuit ensures between the residents of the destroyed town and Eric and a wizened old protector, Alastair (Professor X?) who can perform magic as well. The two adversaries are attacked, seemingly by a medieval biker gang—I mean what else would you call a gang named the Baronian of the Black Leather? One criticism I have is that the author describes mundane tasks in too much detail. In one chapter he describes climbing a rope in such detail that it makes me ask why. I guess it was because he was trying to build tension, but I don't think it had the desired effect. The writing is okay, but not captivating in any way. If you're inventing a fantasy world bound only by your imagination, take the ball and run with it—and be original. All fiction is derivative—there is no need to make it obvious. Naming your characters should be one of the most important things you do, to avoid giving characters names that are either mundane or bizarre. There are minor grammatical issues, such as the use of fiancé in place of fiancée. Based on those factors, I could offer no more a rating of fair. If the author is going to make this into a series, I would suggest he hone the plot a bit more and work with a developmental editor to sharpen the plot.

In the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, in the year 1900, friendships between children of white “intruders” and their Choctaw and Chickasaw schoolmates had to cross a deep cultural divide. It was also a time when public ignorance could make a mockery of the ambitions of a boy with dwarfism and a place where children had to grow up fast. Trouble begins when a beautiful wild stallion, a supposed man killer, is rescued by two adventurous young brothers. When the stallion is identified as a rare Choctaw horse, the question of who should own him threatens to destroy cherished friendships. Then a courageous decision by a young boy allows the ancient spirit of Buster, their Choctaw Pony survivor, to live on for future generations to love and respect.

About the Author Author Sarah Silver based this novel on her father's stories of his childhood in the Choctaw Nation of the Indian Territory, the extraordinary wild horse he rescued, and the political and cultural issues of statehood versus tribal sovereignty that challenged friendships between the white and Indian students in his one room school in the early 1900's.

Bound to Blackwood: House Blackwood Book One, by Sharon Lipman

About the Author A huge fan of the paranormal romance genre, Sharon Lipman started writing in her teens. It wasn't until she was in her thirties that she found a story she was desperate to share. House Blackwood was born and Bound to Blackwood is her debut novel. She was born in west London and grew up in leafy Surrey in south-east England. A lover of all things British, except the weather, she now lives in Almeria, southern Spain with her husband and an ever growing collection of dogs.

Great read if you enjoy vampire paranormal romances By ADropofInkReviews Let me start by saying that it takes a lot for me to like a book about vampires. How many different ways can you see them? However, Ms. Lipman has come up with a novel idea that struck me and I quite liked it. Instead of being predators of the dark, they help usher dying souls to Glory. Separated from Faerie because of actions of a few, the Fallen, they are all doomed. In the midst of a hunt to kill and destroy the Fallen so the gates to Faerie will open to them again, we have a love story.Lena is a powerful character. She’s rash and strong and needs no one, or so she thinks. She’s the only female Guardian in House Blackwood even though she doesn’t take that very serious. All she knows is she’s driven to find and destroy every Fallen she can, with or without her fellow Guardians. Her only weakness is Thorn. Anytime she’s in his presence, she feels drawn to him, but she is not interested and doesn’t want to become trapped by the king’s good looks.Thorn is the King of the vampires. He is also the head of House Blackwood. He was once a Guardian himself and has a hard time backing out of the fray when he should.Of course, Thorn and Lena are beautiful and perfect. However, it’s kind of neat that a few other members of the Guardians are not. Each have their own unique skills. Like most vampire stories, they live for ages. It only makes sense, I suppose. While these vampires need blood, they don’t hunt humans. That’s what the Fallen do.All in all, the book was enjoyable. There are explicit sex scenes in the book, so this is definitely only for adults. Ms. Lipman also uses mostly UK English, so that could throw a few US readers. I know I looked up a few words to make sure they meant what I thought they did, but I’m always up for expanding my knowledge. There are an unfortunate number of errors in the book. They usually appear during moments of extreme action. They pulled me out of the story several times. I also would scan areas now and then rather than read them. I’m not sure why. Maybe that’s something I’ll be able to put my finger on this year. All of that wouldn’t stop me from recommending this book to other readers who enjoy paranormal romance and vampire stories. It will be interesting to see where Ms. Lipman leads us in book 2 of this series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. different for me and interesting By K. Meador I enjoyed the plot and getting to know the characters. Thorn and Lena are well rounded and easy to like. I figured out Eden earlier than it was revealed.Rated a 4 due to editorial mistakes.

By Imagine The Possibilities Bound to Blackwood: House Blackwood Book One (Volume 1) I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.A Vampire teaser sure to leave you wanting more! This book starts out with action, it catches your attention right off. This is what hooked me instantly! Vampire stories are my favorite and this one is set right up there with some of my all time fav's in this genre. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author, and discovering whats next in this series. The best way for me to describe this book: think the movie "Underworld" combined with The TV Series "The Originals". This would be an awesome movie! There are coinciding plot lines which keep an interesting twist throughout the entire book. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author, and discovering whats next in this series.I personally would have liked more 'Vampire story' and less of the 'Struggling Romance', but I still loved it!If you love the supernatural, romance and mystery you are sure to enjoy this book.

A Bit Lacking, But Real Great By Chauncey This guide is fairly thorough, but it seems like it gives about as much attention to Los Angeles as it gives to Ventura. Nothing against Ventura, but Los Angeles has much more to offer, and probably deserves a few more pages. I understand that Fodor's makes a "Southern California" and "Los Angeles" travel guide, but that doesn't mean Los Angeles should get shorted in this travel guide.Anyway, that said, this is an excellent travel guide. Definitely recommended. But probably buy the Los Angeles travel guide as well.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Depressing as Hell! By PMSteve Times What They Are is a 'post apocolyptic' story about three people trying to survive after several nuclear strikes in the US by terrorist governments, Iran and North Korea. Eventually, nuclear war breaks out worldwide with billions being killed, either directly or through radiation poisoning.A couple on a motorcycle are travelling through the mid-east, trying to stay away from government roadblocks and marauding citizen groups who would rather shoot than talk. The government wants everyone to gather into 'camps' where food is rationed and troublemakers (anyone who questions authority) is simply shot. The protagonists on the bike are trying to avoid being rounded up like cattle, wanting to retain their independence and contro their own lives. The third protagonist is a woman prepper who is looking for her daughter, who was taken by her estranged ex-husband... illegally. In the meanwhile, she is sitting on her food storage, which she had the foresight to gather for such an emergency... food that the new government wants to claim, because she's a 'hoarder'.The book paints a very grim picture of what it may be like if the US were ever in such a predicament. Martial law is the law of the land and survival is the name of the game. The storytelling is terse and tense. There is very little personal background given for the main characters. Dialogue is clipped and harsh. There is no sense as to what is about to happen to the trio in their own circumstances... just as it would be if we were surviving in these circumstances. This lends an immense amount of realism to the story as it plays out.As a reader, I felt closed in, claustrophobic and depressed. I sometimes put the book down for a day or so, so that I could decompress and breathe again. The storytelling is that realistic. I started out wanting to give a three-star review, but as I considered how this book, this scenario affected me, I realized this was the work of a master storyteller. The reader becomes as much a character of this story as the ones on the page. It's rare that a story pulls the reader into the fabric of the tale so completely that he or she feels the desperation of the characters.Read at your own risk. This book will leave you feeling wrung out and hung out to dry.Enjoy!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Half Good By Amazon Customer Very sparse writing style. I like it. Also let character backgrounds unfold as the story progressed. Very well done. And the first half of the book is great.Unfortunately, the 2nd half of the book descends into a very typical apocalypse run and gun, super fighter scenario. Disappointing after a great start.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A riveting story By Amazon Customer As a post-apocalyptic drama or 'when $#!t hits the fan world meltdown' type of book, it's definitely above par compared to similar books. Generally well written and edited, with excellent attention paid in terms of a coherent time line and storytelling perspective (several times it switches vantage points between 2 main characters or groups while never losing forward momentum or cohesion). While some character's personalities or attitudes bordered on the extreme at times, I really appreciated the detail and backstories woven in. Some authors show all their cards up front, leaving you to know what's around the next corner in terms of plot. What I enjoyed was the wide range of characters, villains, and realistic obstacles in this desperate new world that drove the action. The overzealous and sometimes trigger-happy locals distrustful of outsiders, simple guiltless petty thieves, despots using the crisis to gain ruthless power, ill eqipped politicians and soldiers, and of course the two main characters: Ray and Karla, a clash of personality but who share a common thread of surviving while protecting those worthwhile of peotecting. This book is long, and there is no happy ending to save the world either, but it was a great ride full of suspenseful action.

As usual, this one was a mixed bag, although I liked more stories than I disliked. Disliked is probably the wrong word. There was no story I didn't want to finish, but there were a couple that just did not grab me. Still, it was a good batch of stories overall. Now, these stories all had a female character as the protagonist, but that does not mean that all the men were bad guys. Not by a long shot. The women who the stories are based on are not the standard for women in their societies. They are unusual, just in the way that the male characters of sword and sorcery are unusual.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Chazbear By C. Beringer I have been a reader of this series since the beginning. It has gotten be with each volume. I love them and re-read at least once a year. Keep up the great work.

You can tell this person has actually been there and give you some pretty great advice and contacts. It was nice to take the guess work out of where and what I will be doing. Thanks for a great reference to Aruba! Pretty jacked about the fishing opportunities. And I am sure the kids will love the beaches you suggested.

By Titus Octavian Good Supervillains (pun intended) are hard to find, but I think we have a winner here. After "Soon I will be Invincible" and "Memoirs of a D-List Supervillain" this is only the third book in this genre that I really liked.Solid story with some good twists, a villains journey, loss and triumphs-the book had it all.Found the book with KU, will proceed to buy it and will happily wait for the next book in the series.

At first readers are thrown into a mess of action that they don't understand. Who is Dire, Why are people trying to kill her, what is going on?These questions are slowly hinted upon as the story progresses. But more important than the backstory of the main character, is her slow development into a person of increased purpose and responsibility and her ties to the other characters around her. Slowly we learn more about this world where superpowers exist as a normal facet of life. But it becomes quickly apparent that just like the world we live in, the Teslaverse is not a paradise and there are no end to the injustices around that mix in with the good. We see these injustices (which are relevent to our world as well) from a fresh set of eyes through Dire, and it makes them that much more ugly because of this. Though the world presented here is dark, that darkness isn't all consuming or opressive feeling. There are many light hearted moments and humor sprinkled through as well, even when things are at their worst. The story has a lot of heartAnother thing I liked about this story which slowly crept up on me, was that the characters all seem to have varied dialogue. I found myself giving them different voices in my head as I read and they all felt like separate people with their own unique hangups.I don't mean to imply that everything about this story is perfect. Though the major plotlines were tied up, the ending was a bit abrupt feeling. And I felt like the Author could have done a bit more to explain the details surrounding the cause of the big power outage. And some of the action segments seemed to go on longer than I would have liked. But any faults I found were more than made up for by how engrossing the story was.I recommend giving this story a try.

Great read, Looking forward to more By Lillian Zhang DIRE: BORN is a great story in and of itself, with relatable characters, a well-developed world, and a gripping plot. However, its real strength is as an origin story for the protagonist, Doctor Dire - the ending feels more like a beginning, promising many more adventures to come.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. No good deed goes unpunished By mrliteral Who was Basil King? It wouldn't be surprising if you didn't know the answer; I didn't, prior to looking up a list of the best-selling books of 1912. He was an Anglican rector (per Wikipedia) who retired due to poor health and went on to write a series of novels, including the best-selling The Street Called Straight. This novel is a little morality tale focusing on Peter Davenant and Olivia Guion. Several years before the story began, Peter loved Olivia and proposed marriage to her; after her disdainful rejection, he went away to become a self-made wealthy man who has retired and found the life of the idly wealthy to be a bore; he wants to get back to earning a living and doing good deeds. The opportunity presents itself when Olivia's father faces jail and financial ruin after embezzling some funds he was a trustee of. For Peter, this is an excellent way to do good and get rid of most of his money in the process (which he'd rather not have). He offers to loan (or maybe gift, since he doesn't expect repayment) the father the money to repay those he stole from. This leads to a series of complications, as Olivia doesn't want to feel indebted to Peter. Additional complications arise when Olivia's fiance, Ashley, a very proper British colonel arrives on the scene. Marrying a woman touched by scandal can harm Ashley's career, but so can abandoning her; furthermore, Ashley resents a virtual stranger coming to the rescue. This leads to many discussions (perhaps too many) between Ashley, Olivia and Peter as well as other characters, as everyone tries to do the right thing and finds that there is no easy resolution. One of King's strengths is that his characters are not one dimensional: for example, Olivia may seem shallow and prideful at first, but she has more depth than it may be first apparent. On the other hand, the debates the characters have around the central issues seem to go on longer than necessary. Generally, however, this is a good book, focused on a set of dilemmas that arise when a good deed creates possible ill effects.

Woman American socialite (and none-too-interesting character) Olivia Guion is all set to have the Wedding of the Year to a British war hero when she learns dear old daddy has been embezzling funds and may face jail time. When old flame Peter Davenant comes to the financial rescue, Olivia decides to switch grooms in midstream. Because why marry a war hero when you can bag a millionaire? Amiright?Yeah, you know I'm right.
