SAVE 50% ON THE BESTSELLING SERIES!! 4 HUGE BOOKS FOR THE PRICE OF 2! The Hasea Chronicles Compilation features all the current books in the bestselling urban fantasy series - The Awakening, The Corruption, The Veil, as well as the prequel novel, Without A Heartbeat. It weighs in at a massive 667,000 words across the four novels. This is the cheapest way to buy the series and is ideal if you haven't started it yet - (or even if you have!) The Awakening: Alexander Eden is one unhappy teenager. A geeky, social pariah, he's the victim of constant bullying at school. His home life isn't much better with a stepfather who resents him and a half brother who is better than him at everything. But that all changes the day the mysterious and beautiful Gabriella De Luca walks into his life. Everyone wants to know her, to be with her. But she is interested in Alex. Because Alex is different. Soon afterwards he is thrown into a world he never thought possible. A world where he and others like him are the last line of defence. A world where an ancient unspeakable evil lurks. Evil which seeks to consume him.

The Corruption: It’s been six months since Alex and Gabriella stood against The Sorrow and won. The Veil still stands uncrossed, and with every passing day the possibility of finding the person stolen from Alex alive diminishes. But after an influx of new Awakenings, the Alliance is being stretched to breaking point. A melancholic Sophia is acting mysteriously and Sage Faru has set the formidable task of gathering a team of Guardians willing to enter Pandemonia. Meanwhile the looming threat of a new, stronger SOS hides in the shadows. But that is the least of Alex’s worries. Something is growing inside of him. Something dark and vengeful that whispers in the silence. Something that plagues his dreams with visions of a horrifying apocalypse. An apocalypse he will start. As Gabriella struggles to hold everything together and Alex struggles not to fall apart, one thing becomes clear. Before they can cross the Veil and stand against Hades, Alex must first defeat his greatest enemy. Himself.

The Veil: The Veil has finally been crossed. Alex, Gabriella and the Guardians of Orion have arrived in Fenodara, a beautiful Luminar city that acts as the last beacon of hope for a dying civilisation - but also a place that hides a dark secret. Never before have they been so close to the Ageless War and witnessed the way it corrupts not only the fading world, but also those who live there. Soon afterwards, a devastating attack on the city rips Orion apart. Broken and defeated, the Guardians are forced to separate and travel through the dark underbelly of Pandemonia in a desperate attempt to save those they love, and stop the forces of Hades before it is too late. However, the longer Alex spends in the dark and hostile world, the more a single fact becomes clear to him. This is a journey they might never return from.

Without A Heartbeat Not much is known about the mysterious Vampire Scarlett. Until now. The year is 1872. A darker, more unforgiving Alliance is working in the shadows, struggling to keep order on the streets of London. Meanwhile in Ireland, a young girl is about to take up a position as scullery maid in the sinister Oakley Manor. It is a decision that will alter her life forever and send her on a path of destruction and death. A path that leads right to the Alliance.

Still it's an easy read, while lacking real depth it's a good light read if you like the theme of kid gets powers, the girl, and finds the world is full of others with powers then you should read this on a holiday

Hopeful and hopeless, villains and heroes, prophecies and self-determination are all themes that come up in several different lights several different times.I could barely pull my eyes away from the page. The story stayed with me for quite some time after I finished the last book. I'll probably be thinking about it for a while longer.

Review

“..a characteristically lively read….a good holiday read for any investor who suspects they may be stuck in their ways and in need of new insights” (Money Observer, July 2015)

From the Inside Flap

Mainstream investors are wrong more often than right. Most folks intuitively know this, and statistics and studies back it up. How can you buck the trend and be right more often than wrong?

Many believe doing the opposite of everyone else is the key to avoiding the herd's faulty investment decisions. Wall Street defines contrarian investing as betting the opposite of the crowd. Problem is, stocks often don't do the opposite of what most folks expect! Those who bet on the opposite, thinking it makes them a contrarian, behave as crowd-like as the crowd they try to game! If the herd thinks stocks will rise 10%, the anti-herders bet they'll fall—but markets could also skyrocket or zigzag sideways. In Beat the Crowd, bestselling author Ken Fisher shows you how to look beyond both crowds and find real contrarian opportunities that pay.

Being a contrarian simply means thinking independently. Not getting caught up in media hype and endless debate over whether Thing X is good or bad for stocks. Looking for things everyone misses. Thinking differently than the crowd, but not necessarily opposite! Beat the Crowd helps you filter the noise, test rules of thumb, shatter media myths and avoid common pitfalls.

If you're tired of media chatter and getting burned by consensus wisdom, this book is for you. With his signature style, Ken dispels common viewpoints and knocks age-old "rules" on their head. You'll learn how to separate what's important from what isn't, think outside the investing canon, find the "elephant in the room" and out-invest the herd.

From the Back Cover

A STRAIGHTFORWARD GUIDE TO THINK-FORYOURSELF INVESTING FROM NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR KEN FISHER

Are you tired of scouring financial headlines for actual wisdom—and coming up empty? Are you tired of nonstop media hype? Do you want to break free from the pack, think differently and outsmart the crowd? If so, this book is for you.

Contrarian investing isn't about being a bull when others are bearish, or vice versa. It's about independent thinking. Cutting through the hype to see what others don't see. Using simple logic to dispel media myths. Not being blinded by opinions, rules of thumb or consensus viewpoints. In Beat the Crowd you'll learn how to separate hype from reality to uncover lucrative tactics few others talk about.

Investing success isn't about perfection. It's about simply being right more often than not. Tuning out the noise and seeing the world differently than the masses will help you achieve this, and you don't need rigorous academic training to learn how. Beat the Crowd will teach you how, using the same methods Ken Fisher has employed over four decades of money management. Read this book to discover what moves markets, what doesn't, and where you can find real investment wisdom.

Spotting a Downturn in the Stock Market in Time By laurens van den muyzenberg If you are an active investor you will find this a fascinating and useful book. It teaches you how to spot when a bull market will become a bear market in time. That is get out before the decline. Fischer explains in great detail why the majority of investors gets out too early before the bull market has peaked or too late when a bull market has already for a considerable period changed to a bear market. He shows how taking the Leading Economic Indicator, the LEI, seriously is the right way.Important reasons why investors get the timing wrong are lack of discipline and ignorance in the sense of wrong concepts. Discipline refers especially to not selling unnecessarily. Shares go up and down. Most investors when a position in a portfolio goes down consider selling and replacing it by a winner. They consider a small loss far more important than a large gain. This is behavior based on the past of what has already happened. Fischer points out that what matters is what is expected to happen in the next 30 months.Another important factor is the media that write about the stock market. People are more interested in bad news than good news, and therefore the majority of articles are written about short-term disappointments and negative developments further in the future than 30 months. His definite view is that both short-term opinions and extrapolations of the past and past 30 months predictions are useless for predicting changes from bull to bear and vice versa.Fischer points to more than thirty widely held views he considers wrong. Some examples. A high Price Earnings ratio (PE) has no validity in predicting a better or worse development than a low PE. Small companies do not have a superior long-term performance than large ones. The increase from long-term interest rates does not lead to a change in a bull market. Wars do not influence the stock market other than of the magnitude such as World War II. Fisher presents straightforward statistical proofs. He puts these concepts to tests to determine if these widely held view correspond to what happened in reality. It is necessary to look at a complete picture; there are always examples where these factors appeared to be right, but they are far fewer than when proven wrong. For learning to spot in time approaching bears and bulls this book is first class, five stars.Fisher frequently states that he is not a sociologist but nevertheless holds very negative opinions about politicians. Many people will have different views. His negative views of political leaders are so strong that they even get in the way of his statistical proofs. For example he states on page 132 that in 1938 the GDP started to increase when Franklin Roosevelt was president and on page 143 that a bear market reigned from 1934 to 1942. The reality is that already in 1934, FDR's second year in office, GDP increased with 10.8%. He states about the ACA on page 152 that the uninsured were reduced with between 7 to 10 million and on page 154 only with 1.1% which is only 3.5 million or half.Fisher as a non-sociologist has very definite opinions on government. He sometimes creates the impression that the kind of policies that President Hoover pursued most of the time of non-interference in the economy is the only right policy and political action. I nevertheless also enjoyed this part as he does also make thought-provoking comments on political action.

I've dabbled on and off with investments over the years, with streaks of success and patches of rockiness. This book helped me to rethink some of my basic approaches to my portfolio, and in fact I'm probably going to look at my investments this weekend and make some changes based on what I've learned. In particular, I've found that I'm paying too much attention to short-term news and letting it make me either too excited or too scared. The funny thing is that I kind of already knew that about myself, and often times I would make a change knowing that I probably shouldn't. Reading through this book has affirmed that I should stick more to fundamentals and not worry so much about what I read in the paper or see on TV.The book itself is an easy read and only took me two days to finish. It's also written in a way that seems easy to understand even for someone who doesn't have a background in investing or know all the technical jargon. I also like that there are a lot of charts and other graphics to visualize the points being made. I always find it easier to see a concept displayed in a graph so that was a big help for me.Would definitely recommend this book for anyone managing their own investments or just interested in how it works.

Not one of Fishers best efforts By Pete Ken Fisher is a good writer I have read about 5 of his 10 previous books , plus his Forbes articles for many years. Phil Fischer ( his father ) was a brilliant thinker and investor , Ken has obviously got that gene. If you have read Fisher's stuff and other similar thinking investment writers , the book does not offer much that is new. If you are looking for a book that is going to be the definitive guide on how to find the next great investments this is not the book for you. ( I don't think that exists ).This book might help you become a better " critical thinker " regarding your investment decisions.I gave this only three stars , not because it is bad book or promotes investing philosophies that I do not agree with , but because I think Fisher could have written a better book, he should have stopped at 10.

The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is set in the beautiful Pacific Northwest cities of Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. When Universal made the first movie, filming was primarily done in Vancouver B.C., with secondary scenery filmed in Seattle, Washington. This book takes you to locations in all three cities, visiting sites from the books and movie filming. It leads you to real life and fictional places from the story, and their movie-magic stand-ins. It also includes links to Google Maps of the cities with marked locations. I hope you have a fun time visiting the places featured in the books, and seeing how they became new locations for the movie.

Thoughts that glow and words that burn By Elfa Sigvalda Even though I have read many books and short stories by great authors and is dazed, and full of admiration of their work, it happens once in a while, that a book or a story, that one has never heard mentioned goes right in to your heart and won't let go. That is what Mary Wilkins Freeman's stories did to me. I felt as if I had found a friend. There is such a pleasure to be found in her stories, the fluent and smooth style, easily understood by all, as well as a lesson in living your life at your own pace. She is so unaffected and natural in her storytelling, that these stories, which easily could have taken place, are sweet, tender, bitter and then full of resistence. Her character do not always behave. The stories are mostly about New England country women, for whom Freeman has obviouly a great sympathy for and she writes about them with respect and affection

I became hooked on her stories when I went back to school many years ago. It is difficult to find a book of just her works, but thankfully, Dover sees fit to publish this small tome with just Freeman's short stories. Entitled "The Revolt of Mother", it highlights one of Freeman's most hilarious short stories about a woman who is promised a larger home, only to become dismayed as her husband first builds his ultimtate barn. This book is inexpensive and a great way to become familiar with one of America's historical, overlooked woman authors.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Florence Nightingale By J.E. Stephens I bought this to use in my 6th grade reading classroom. It is excellent to use to teach reading skills such as main idea, author's purpose, or summarizing. I put it in a center and students have 10 minutes to use the book for an assignment. Since it is at a lower reading level, students have success in building skills to use in higher level texts. This book is a good addition to the grade 1-6 classroom library.

Libby Thump’s life is a perfect mix of horseback riding, art, and her dog Margaret until her resilience is put to the test when she must learn to ride a challenging pony in this chapter book companion to Libby of High Hopes, which Kirkus Reviews called “a solid choice for horse lovers,” from New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Elise Primavera.Libby Thump still wishes for a horse of her own, but she’s very happy riding Princess, the aging horse who belongs to Sal, the stable owner of High Hopes Farm. Libby loves Princess and her gentle ways, and Princess loves Libby. Then one day Sal says she has to ride Saddleshoes instead—and Saddleshoes is the most difficult pony at the stable! Sal says Princess is too old to be ridden much longer and that Libby is outgrowing her, so Libby is stuck: ride Saddleshoes, or don’t ride at all. But Libby is nothing if not determined, and so she decides that the only way to live up to her potential and achieve her dream of being the best rider in the world is to try something new. Can she find a way to win a blue ribbon riding Saddleshoes?

Review When summer begins, Libby starts to practice horseback riding and jumping in earnest, a process made difficult by Saddleshoes, the unruly pony she is assigned to ride. Determined to win a blue ribbon at a horse show, she spends more time at High Hopes Horse Farm with a younger rider driven to excel, and less time with her longtime best friends. Believable dialogue and vivid characterizations enhance the story, which Primavera illustrates with lively, sometimes amusing pen-and-ink drawings. A fine choice for fans of horses and riding, the second book in the Libby of High Hopes series is as enjoyable as the first. — Booklist, Carolyn Phelan (Booklist Online November 12, 2015)

LIBBY THE RIDER

Libby Thump wished for a blue ribbon. A satin royal blue ribbon with a rosette and the words “First Place” written in gold lettering. There was going to be a horse show in three weeks and that’s exactly where she hoped to win one. Libby was excited because Sal, who owned High Hopes Horse Farm, was supposed to tell her today if he thought she was ready to ride in the show. She sat on the floor of her bedroom trying to pull on her left boot. “Come on,” she said impatiently, but it wouldn’t budge. She’d grown an inch since last summer and the riding boots that had been handed down from her sister were beginning to get tight. She yanked off the extra pair of socks that she’d always worn and pulled on a pair of thin ones. It did the trick and her foot slipped into place. She jumped up and reached for her riding helmet, when something caught her eye. Libby tilted her head and squinted at one of the many drawings of Sal’s retired show horse, Princess, she’d taped to the wall. She suddenly noticed for the first time there was something wrong with the way she’d drawn the white mare and grabbed an eraser and pencil off her table to fix it. “Libbyyyyyyyy!” her mother called to her. “Please walk the dog!” “In a minute!” Libby called back. Margaret gazed up at her and wagged her tail expectantly. Libby got the leash—the drawing would have to wait—but as she turned to leave she caught a reflection of herself in the mirror. There were the same long dark braids, dark eyes, and oval face, but in her boots and jeans and quilted vest she looked like a real rider! Libby wondered what her fourth-grade teacher from last year would think of her now. Libby remembered what Mrs. Williams had written on Libby’s report card the last day of school. Libby needs to apply herself. Sometimes she does not pay attention or follow directions as well as she should. Libby needs to live up to her potential! Back then Libby wasn’t even sure what potential was. By now she had memorized the meaning of the word: “something that can develop or become actual.” Libby knew just what that “something” was, too; she was a rider! It was what she was meant to be. She just hoped that she had the potential to someday become a really good rider. She thought she could feel it in there, just itching to get out! Sure enough, a lot had changed since Mrs. Williams’s class. Throughout the fall and all winter Libby had been riding Princess, and she was even learning to jump. Libby moved her face closer to the mirror. She sucked in her cheeks and tried to imagine what she would look like when she was grown up. Would she be a really good rider by then? Did she have what it would take? “Libbyyyyy!” her mother called again. Libby glanced at the clock on her night table. “Oh my gosh!” she cried, and raced out of the room with Margaret scrambling behind her. “Laurel! Laurel!” Libby pressed the leash into her sister’s hands. “I’ve got a lesson—I don’t want to be late—just this once, please? Thanks!” Libby tore out of the house. Her sister stamped her foot and yelled, “Libbyyyyyy!” Libby pretended she didn’t hear and ran as fast as she could through the park to the path in the woods. She never stopped till she stood in the grassy field on top of the same hill as in the pictures that she’d covered her bedroom walls with. “Princess! Come on, girl!” Below the horse nickered and soon there was a thunder of hooves. The white mare’s mane whipped in the wind as she galloped up to meet the girl. She skidded to a stop and nudged Libby’s pocket for a carrot. Libby jogged down the hill and Princess followed behind like an enormous dog. There was the smell of damp earth and new grass. All winter Libby had been looking forward to spring and now it was finally here. She breathed in deeply and sighed. The sky was blue and the air was just beginning to have the first hint of warmth. At the gate she grabbed the halter and slipped it over the mare’s nose. “This has to be our best lesson yet, Princess!” Libby knew that she would have to ride extra-specially well this day in order for Sal to think that she was good enough to compete in the horse show. As soon as they entered the barn Brittany poked her head out of a stall where she was tacking up Summer, the horse she always rode. Libby’s and Brittany’s moms were best friends and that had automatically made Libby and Brittany best friends since they were babies. They’d had a “misunderstanding” last year, but now Libby was glad they were best friends again. “Lesson today?” Brittany asked. “Yep!” Libby grinned as she passed. At the end of the aisle was one of Sal’s boarders, Mr. McClave and his horse, General George. “Hi, Mr. McClave!” Libby shouted. The old man paused from brushing off his horse. “All ready for your lesson?” “All ready!” Libby answered, and secured Princess to the cross ties. She hurried to the tack room. A blond curly-haired woman in jeans and hacking boots bustled down the aisle with several flakes of hay that she threw into stalls. Emily was Sal’s wife and helped him run the stable. “Hi, Emily!” Libby called to her. “Libby!” Emily called back. “Sal will be right out!” “Great!” Libby grabbed her saddle and bridle and felt the butterflies in her stomach that were always there right before she was to have a jumping lesson. She still couldn’t pass by the photos in the tack room of Sal riding the big white horse over the gigantic fences without getting goose bumps. Now here she was, Libby Thump, jumping Princess herself. She was so anxious to get out to the ring that it was all she could do to take the time to pick out each of the mare’s hooves and then brush her off and tack her up. Libby’s fingers nervously fumbled with the snaps on her riding helmet. All ready, she led Princess down the aisle. She wanted everything to go well this afternoon. Brittany poked her head out of Summer’s stall again, “Watch out for Saddleshoes!” “Oh no!” Libby groaned. “Oh yes!” Brittany said. Outside Libby could see that Brittany was right. There was Saddleshoes. With his dazzling white legs, brown spots on his neck and rump, and a handsome blaze down the front of his face Saddleshoes was the best-looking pony around. But . . . as far as Libby was concerned he was also the worst pony there ever was. Libby entered the ring careful to steer Princess far away from him, for he could deliver a mean kick. Suddenly there was a gust of wind and Saddleshoes spooked to the side. Somewhere the sound of a tractor started up and he shied and tried to buck.

Bozeman, Montana is a sleepy little college town, but delve a little deeper and you see more, a gateway to Yellowstone national park, the theoretical site for First Contact with the Vulcans (2058 AD), and finally a geological horror waiting to happen. Bozeman sits upon a large magma bubble just a few miles below the surface, and when it burst 70 million years ago, it created a Nuclear winter that killed off most organisms over twenty pounds. That magma plume is set to go off any day now. Not a place you might wish to grow up if you watched too many disaster movies. Meet two teenagers Sam and Nick, plus their friend Jared and Nick’s younger brother and sister Topher and Emma. Sam and Nick are buds, and their parents are friends and they live next to each other. It’s senior year for Sam and Nick and now colleges have to be applied to, the possibility of sex hopefully a reality in the near future. The big question: sex with whom? What if you want it to be your best friend? That could be problematic. Sam and Nick believe they are the definition of boring, normal dorky boys, forever embarrassing themselves, one step from disaster; but if forced to admit it, they would say they had supportive families, and exciting possibilities in their future. No one told them how exciting. What if it turns out that your parents are Æsir, as in the Norse gods? Let’s say for instance, Loki the God of mischief and mayhem? Or in Sam’s case, a mother of Indian descent who is really the goddess Kali, God of destruction and chaos. These parents are successfully pretending to be college professors. The guys are forced to wonder why now, why after 18 years of blissful ignorance, should the parental units decide to drop this bombshell on these unsuspecting teenagers, trying to live through high school and maybe get into college? Because a war between the Gods is brewing and the boys have literally dug up, incomprehensibly powerful stone balls that Odin and his colleagues would very much like to have returned.

Loki's Children: A Tale of Two Boys - Book One, by Peter Bensen

From the Author This was the first book I wrote.  I had friends and family read it, and then I let it sit.  That was a good thing.  I started re-writing it last year, in between chapters of my Russian ambassador story and other projects.  I really didn't want to change the enthusiasm and optimism of my characters, which shined through in the first iteration.  There is a lot more acceptance of gay relationships now than when I started this book, which is wonderful.  I didn't change anything about my treatment of these issues; you'll have to decide what you think about how these issues have changed for gay young men and let me know.

From the Inside Flap In three days it was going to be September and school would begin again, and it would be Nick and Sam's senior year of High School. It had been a typically hot, dry and smoky summer in Bozeman, and thankfully none of the forest fires that provided the smoke were all that close. But today it was cooler, and the sky was clear and blue. Nick hung up the phone, then looked at the clock and grimaced; he was late as usual. He scribbled on his hand Vulcans. He had just remembered that there was a group of kids at school that wanted to build a monument on the front lawn of the high school commemorating First Contact with The Vulcans, and he had promised to help. What was that guy's name, the inventor of the Warp Drive, Cochran? Yea, and he'd done it right here in Bozeman, Mt - some thirty years in the future, if all went well. He'd have to ask Topher for the details, he had the full DVD collection of the Star Trek movies, so he'd know. Nick glanced out the window at the clear blue sky and saw an ordinary contrail of a jet passing overhead, but then, oh no, it isn't any kind of jet ever seen before on Earth! It hovers and lands at the amazing Bozeman International Airport and out stride the Vulcans, pointy ears and all! Nick smirked; how great would it be if stuff like that really happened?

About the Author Once he was a biologist and a biochemist, then a fund raiser and now a payroll coordinator. Now on the weekends he writes science fiction, in contemporary times, mostly about first contact with aliens hiding among us.  What does a sixty something white guy know about teenagers today? Seven years (during the late 80s and 90s) living as a resident head gave him something of a clue - basic stuff.  A young adult is arrogant, optimistic, death defying, smart, funny, endearing and often thinks about sex - with someone cute. This author spent his childhood reading comics and science fiction, so he is trying to add to that body of work.  There will be few dystopian adventures (unless he can think of a novel approach), almost no angst-driven plot devises, and no burying the protagonist in a grave for seven days until he is accidentally dug up.

Just enough tech to make it interesting but not overwhelming. The sex scenes were not overly graphic; the plot was more about feelings and emotions vs hot steamy sex. Ageless astronaut Sam Austin and the settlers of the planet Citadel have a problem. Former US President Courtney Harrington might be disgraced and convicted of war crimes, but she remains a threat to the newly independent settlers.

Harrington’s looking for the means to gain amnesty for the crimes she committed in Target Citadel, and she thinks the very aliens that almost wiped out Citadel offer the chance she needs. If she can secure advanced alien tech for human use, she’s confident she’ll walk free. Of course, nothing comes without a price—and the aliens want something in return.

Harrington’s horrific deal offers up human beings as sacrificial lab rats. Caught up in the deposed president’s plot is Sara Albretti, former transport captain and Citadel settler.

In the skies beyond Citadel’s star system, the long conflict between Harrington and Austin comes to a deadly conclusion. At stake is the future of Citadel—and possibly all of humanity.

The next chapter in Robert Adrian’s Citadel series, Checkmate Citadel continues Sam Austin’s remarkable journey from astronaut to founding father of humanity’s newest home—a home under threat from alien and human alike.

I am under no obligation to provide a review, and everything in the following review is my honest opinion. It took me a while to get this review in because I realized that I needed to read two other books before I could understand what was in the third. I am happy with my purchases, and I reviewed those two books as well since I was already in the reviewing spirit of things. This book was the best yet in the series. The growth of the author with each and every book is amazing. The things that might have hurt my immersion from the first book are completely eliminated now. I really hope that the author makes a short stories book about minor events, or some prequels about the mars conflict or the plague to hook in new readers to the series. As always, the book has some wonderful space battles mixed in with some political intrigue. The characters are becoming ever more defined. Even brand new characters are seeing dimension very quickly. I love the aliens plot line, and it advances even more in this book. I hope his next book delves even deeper into the aliens and the derelict. As always, there are more technology advances for the citadel group, and every piece of new technology is fun to read about. The journey of being the underdog against the aliens to something more (I won't post spoilers here) makes for a great read.

Just the thought of the colonization of the moon and Mars made this trilogy worth the reading. Enjoyed the interaction between the characters(good guy vs. bad guy). Liked the glimpse of the possible future technology. Would like to see the next book in the series take Mr Austin a couple of hundred or so more years into the future and to other planets(galaxies?). Imagine what the technology and civilization will be like then. Must read for sci-fi aficionados.

A funny look at a slower life on a small French island By FrenchVillageDiaries This is a memoir about settling into the gentle sway of life on a small French island in the Atlantic. I sometimes worry when a book is titled ‘humorous’ by the author, but I have to agree in this case as parts of this book are hilarious.Take one New York executive used to the fast paced life on Manhattan Island and take her across the Atlantic to the small island of Ile d’Oleron, just off the coast of La Rochelle (and somewhere I know very well). It is the early 1990’s and there is no internet, email, Facebook or mobile phones, meaning she is totally isolated from all her friends and family and has no choice but to settle into her new life with her French surfer boyfriend and his mates. Give her lots of new and scary experiences like driving a car with gears (stick shift), topless beaches (who knew you American gals struggle so much with boobies), a strange language where kissing replaces waving and hugging, shared public toilet facilities and local farmers who stare. Some might go mad, some might run back to their hectic normality, but Judy lets the love of a good Frenchman and the acceptance of the locals slow her down, relax her and leave her feeling calm and at home. Except when it comes to struggling with the supermarkets, cheese counters and shopping trolleys (carts), when (between my giggles) I feared she might need to return her Upper West Side shrink.I thoroughly enjoyed her funny descriptions of the vast differences between her old and new life and the only thing that disappointed me was the end. I really wasn’t ready for it to end when it did and I do hope there is another book planned. I guess I am just a naturally nosey person, but I’d love to know what happened next.I was sent a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

So full of typos, misspellings and grammatical errors that it was difficult to read. And the dashes and dots?! Practically every sentence had one and in places where they didn't belong (Fire-Island, Upper-West-Side, etc.). Any book so poorly edited isn't worth my time or my eyesight.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Spelling, grammar and tenses spoil the story. By Zuri Two aspects spoiled this book for me -- Judy Block's atrocious spelling and sentence construction, and her exaggerations. The book is funny, here and there. But even though English is not my first language I cannot enjoy a book so badly edited. She hyphenates words (all the time) which should not be hyphenated, and she mixes her tenses: she would start off a paragraph in the present tense and then jump to past tense. She calls a vineyard a "wine field"!! I'm sorry I cannot remember more of her incorrect words, as I have gone on to read other books in the meantime. I'm sorry if I sound like a grumpy teacher, but these self-published books should first be given to someone like an English teacher to edit! Judy also exaggerates a lot, and "pads" her stories to draw them out, so in places that old ploy becomes simply boring. It's not THAT hard to drive a car with a gear stick (which she calls a shift stick). The story about her fears to go topless on the French island was mildly funny, but in the end you want to say, oh, for heaven's sake, then just don't do it, but stop the agonizing about it! Judy could very well write a sequel, but in that case I sincerely hope she lets someone edit her manuscript. I don't understand how a former TV executive can mangle her mother tongue like this!

The sun did not rise on the morning of the trial, and neither did Slava's spirits... As younger sister to the Empress of all of Zem' and the only one possessing her foremothers' gifts of clairvoyance, Slava is both one of the most powerful and powerless people in the Known World. Desperate to escape the intrigue and hostility of her sister's kremlin, Slava takes off on an expedition to the Midnight Land, the uninhabited, unmapped tundra on the Northern edge of Zem'. But as she travels North, Slava discovers that it is more than just the world of women that covets her gifts, and that fate is pushing her to become a most unlikely hero...Combining motifs from classical Russian literature with the genre of high fantasy, this book is both a gripping coming-of-age tale and a subversive exploration of gender, morality, and subjectivity. Fantasy finalist in the 2015 INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards!

I am eager to read the rest of the trilogy and predict a great future for Ms By rosegarden An enchanting fantasy reminiscent of classical Russian fairy tales. I was so drawn in that I was loathe to put the books down until I had finished both volumes. The characters became so real that I felt a bond of friendship in spite of the era and fanciful nature of their lives. Having travelled extensively in Russia, I could feel the eeriness of the forests described by the author. I am eager to read the rest of the trilogy and predict a great future for Ms. Clark if she continues to produce this quality of work.

I would completely rate it 5 stars. It was a very intriguing story about a girl with the power of empathy and how she learns to deal with other's emotions and how they influence her own. Along the way there are also talking animals, an adventurous journey, and self discovery - lots of self discovery. It makes you wonder at the line between right and wrong, and the perception of each. It's great. There were only a few things I didn't like about the story, and although they were minor, they were cumbersome enough for me to give the book four stars and not five, like I would have were I simply rating the story-line as I said previously. First, the names are all Russian-like names and very hard to pronounce, not to mention, very long. They are also very similar, which makes it really easy to get confused if you are not very careful about which character the author is talking about. There is actually a sort of guide at the beginning of the book to show you how to say some of the names, etc., and I ended up going back to refer to it many times throughout. I really didn't like that. It was like I had to pause the story long enough to go find out how to pronounce something, so eventually I gave it up and started assigning them all nicknames so I could simply continue reading. I actually nicknamed one of the B. Coleslaw...Finally, there is a large amount of description in the book, which is awesome in a lot of it, but simply dragged in others. I know as an author myself how hard it is to immerse a reader in a fantasy world without making it boring through endless description. The main character, Slava, I felt was over-described in quite a few places, but in different ways that were saying essentially the same thing.Overall, I will say I highly recommend the book for fantasy readers. It's a great book, and honestly, I sometimes have the attention span of a fruit fly, so for others out there who enjoy more description and fleshed out tales, this is a fantastic story. Even with my short attention span and lack of interest in never-ending descriptors, I still enjoyed it, and that's saying a lot!

Clark has written a fantastic story of a young woman’s emotional growth while wrestling with what is both gift and curse—an overwhelming sense of empathy for others. Her name is Slava. As a princess within a royal court of scheming, back-biting, duplicitous family members and courtiers, she endures debilitating ambivalence as a result of both hating those scheming for their self-serving nature and having compassion for their use of such strategy to survive within a dog-eat-dog world. Her growth truly begins when she leaves that world and is thrust among common folk within a beautiful, vast, and deadly wilderness full of mysteries, magical entities, and sorcerers. I will say no more but that I highly recommend this title, and that I’m off to begin the next volume in the Midnight Land series.
