Why do crucial business partnerships and alliances fail so often and how can you keep it from happening to you? Partnering with the Frenemy answers these questions, helping you anticipate, prevent, and solve the problems that lead close business relationships to implode.

Drawing on cutting-edge research, Sandy Jap illuminates the widespread “frenemy” phenomenon in organizational partnerships, where partners who start as non-competitive “friends” become “enemies” over time.

She identifies key economical and structural causes of “frenemization,” in which success creates imbalances in power dynamics, leading partners to generate resentment, contempt, and often direct competition. She also illuminates crucial social causes for partnership failure, where seemingly innocuous acts of interpersonal opportunism and “sins of omission” gradually poison collaboration.

To support her insights, she offers numerous case studies, both ongoing and historical, including Samsung/Google, Martha Stewart/Macy’s, Oracle/Sun Microsystems, Best Buy/Apple, Calvin Klein/Warnaco, and Nike/Footlocker. Most important, she offers specific recommendations for avoiding problems, revitalizing weakening partnerships, and recognizing when a partnership can’t be saved.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT CONTRACTS AND MONEY Understand how to better manage emotions, suspicions, and expectations from Day 1

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM OTHERS’ FAILING PARTNERSHIPS Anticipate, prevent, and mitigate the core causes of business relationship failure

“In both supply-chain management and the channels of distribution, strategic partnerships are critical to success. But truly synergistic partnerships are hard to find. Professor Jap draws on her own experience and extensive research to help us learn from partnerships that have gone awry. Managers who understand why partnerships fail learn to minimize failures and, in turn, enhance successful collaboration.”—John R. Hauser, Kirin Professor of Marketing, MIT Sloan School of Management

“Dr. Sandy Jap is an academic with her feet out of the ivory tower and in the real world of business. Partnering with the Frenemy is an insightful view about what can make relationships work, or not work, amongst businesses.”—David Hisco, CEO ANZ Bank New Zealand

Hanssens, Bud Knapp Distinguished Professor of Marketing, UCLA Anderson School of Management

“Sandy Jap has spent decades studying a subject that perplexes many firms: why a business relationship that had been good for years, seems suddenly, inexplicably to have gone south. She calls this phenomenon ‘frenemization’ (and we do need a term for it). In this short book, she explains both the causes and possible cures for this nasty problem. Read this book; if you don’t, some of your friends will likely become your frenemies.”—Gary L. Lilien, Distinguished Research Professor of Management Science, Penn State and Research Director, Institute for the Study of Business Markets

“Sandy Jap, a world-class expert in business partnerships, has written a great book that opens up the ‘black box’ of business relationships, shedding light on the dark places, and providing key tools to mitigate the downsides and successfully manage business relationships for performance and profit. Anyone who relies on partners or relationships to make their organization work—that is, everyone—should read this book.”—Katherine (Kay) N. Lemon, Accenture Professor, Boston College, Executive Director, Marketing Science Institute

“In today’s rapid-pace business world where no firm can do it all, relationships between organizations are necessary but can fall apart quickly. Sandy Jap’s insightful book describes how and why these relationships fail but also gives hope by offering a useful framework to support enduring business relationships to create value for all. Thank you Sandy!”—Jackson Nickerson, Frahm Family Professor of Strategy and Organization, Olin Business School, Brookings non-resident Senior Scholar, Associate Dean and Director Brookings Executive Education

“Sandy Jap is the most qualified scholar to helps us understand the underpinnings of inter-organizational relationships. In this book, she makes an invaluable contribution to helping managers in organizations create, maintain, and enhance these relationships over time. Oliva, Director, Institute for the Study of Business Markets, Professor of Marketing, Smeal College of Business, Penn State

Read Sandy Jap’s book as she uses her personal experience and management expertise to explain what makes partnerships work or come apart. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Classic Defined By Yoguini Anyone who loved "The Lonely Doll" will love this book. The same wonderful elements are here again: Little Bear's urchin personality, Mr. Bear's gentle, nurturing, and paternalistic presence, Edith's endearing big sister struggles with her impetuous ursine brother. There is an enduring sense of family in these stories, a realism of image and characterization that is compelling. The photographs are a feast, so well staged and so in harmony with the choice brevity of the text that one would be hard put to decide which is more effective. For this reason -- imho -- Dare Wright's books have no equal in the genre. Some have frowned at an alleged darkness in these stories. It would be a sensitive child indeed to wonder about Edith's presence in the bears' lives; surely an insensitive one not to be enchanted instead by the credibility of the world they inhabit. Remember the classic fairy tales invariably included a measure of danger. Dare Wright's books also seek to teach that there are consequences to bad behavior. But this is done with thoughtfulness and an appreciation for her characters' innocence that readers are drawn back again and again. Her voice truly is her own. How lucky we are to have such books and particularly these books again in print. I remember watching auctions on the secondary market for battered editions of this title reach three digits. If you appreciate children's literature for the rare artistry the genre requires, and are unfamiliar with her work, don't wait any longer. This and her other gems are sure to find a special place in your child's library -- or your own.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Still Magical By Bradley As a child who grew up on the books by Dare Wright, I remember being transfixed by the images and story. As an adult sharing this book with my nieces, I was equally spellbound by the photography and the Magic of how Dare Wright brought her dolls and bears to life. Everyone who goes on a summer vacation can relate to wanting to not wanting to leave, Edith is no different. This is a fun book for children, but I would also suggest this book if you have anyone interested in photography as the images are amazing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Be wary of print quality By TrueEyesight I love these mesmerizing Edith and Mr Bear books and am happy there are affordable reissues printed. However, I was disappointed in the photo quality of the one I got - the photos were printed too light and washed out, not like the original which I also own.

Magic is real? Big deal. Bills still gotta be paid. Especially when you’re heading into vet med. Emma Chase is nothing special – if anything, with a roomie who turns into a jaguar on a regular basis, she’s the sidekick, not the heroine. Her superpowers have more to do with acing her finals and overworking herself. Knowing her best friend’s secret makes it easier to justify her own inclination to keep people at a distance, but it doesn’t change her life. Until others like him show up on her doorstep, convinced she’s the fated savior of their race, telling her she’s destined to command the magic of – well, Emma doesn’t quite catch that part, she’s too busy getting her ass the hell out of there. What she does know? The Jaguar King is after her, his rivals want her dead, and she doesn’t have to believe in prophecy to believe they’ll stop at nothing to catch her. Violence. Magic. Inappropriate humor. Step into a world of wonder and savagery in a gritty urban fantasy with an unlikely heroine, sizzling heroes, and complicated villains. The Jaguar King is a full-length read and the first in a series, and all the books have satisfying resolutions as well as a series-spanning story arc. Definitely no cliff-hangers – just bad-ass shifters with one goal: claim the prize. Claim the Caller of the Blood.

At time a little confusing, but it held my interest to the very end. If you like a mystery with a fun and snarky lead lady this might be the book for you.

The characters have true personalities which resonate with some good credibility. What I particularly liked is the manner in which all the different directions within the scope of the subject start to converge adding a nice complexity to the plot.Give it a try!

Cattle rustling is about to get the best of some of the finest ranches in Texas—until the Rangers come to call. But while Nate, Hoot, and the rest of Captain Quincy’s Texas Rangers are out to arrest the outlaws, things take an unexpected turn for the worse. When Nate throws in with the renegade rustlers, his Ranger friends can hardly believe it. It seems that the compadre they’d trusted and accepted into their regiment as one of their own has turned on them—but can it be true? Nate appears to enjoy the life of crime as he not only steals cattle, but robs banks and stagecoaches on his own before he joins up with Conrad Jordan’s gang of thieves. But in a deadly battle between the Rangers and the rustlers, which side will Nate pick? Will he remain true to the lawmen who’ve taken him in and made him one of their own—or is he truly A RANGER GONE BAD?

By Joan Williams Lone Star Ranger: A Ranger Gone Bad, is a frontier tale where trust and friendships are tested when two young Texas Rangers face dust, guns, hard rides and cattle thieves until their friendship is destroyed when one Ranger turns outlaw, escapes jail, and joins the cattle rustlers terrorizing Texas. A Ranger Gone Bad By Joyce Islas This book is a simple tale, simply Clean, simply told, yet a well thought out story about a young boy who was orphaned by outlaws. The Texas Rangers found him and adopted him. The story develops from there. A good book for teens and young adults.

Destined to become his clan's next high wizard, Turesobei struggles to live up to the expectations. And now he's had enough of people treating him like he's a child. So when his treasure-hunting father arrives with important news to discuss only with the current high wizard, Turesobei spies on their meeting and accidentally foils an assassination attempt. As a reward his father invites him on an expedition to find an artifact known as the Storm Dragon's Heart. But when disaster strikes, their quest becomes a race for survival. Aided by a sassy ninja cat-girl and a mysterious diary that transforms into a winged familiar, Turesobei battles deadly cultists, vengeful spirits, and a mad wizard from a rival clan who's determined to use the artifact to destroy Turesobei's homeland. The Storm Dragon's Heart will thrill readers with enchanting characters, exotic landscapes, mystical beasts, forbidden love, and fast-paced adventure. Book 1.5: The Maker's BrushThe following story takes place just before the end of The Storm Dragon’s Heart. Unlike her famous and important brother Turesobei, who will one day become their clan's next high wizard, or Iniru, his qengai assassin girlfriend, Enashoma's destiny is to marry a noble lord of her mother's choosing and host teas for the rest of her life. This is decidedly not the future she dreams of. But then she gets a chance at adventure. When her brother and her clan are at their most vulnerable, an ancient threat is released. And despite Lu Bei’s knowledge and Iniru’s skill, Enashoma is the only one with the power to stop it. Book 2: Lair of the Deadly TwelveIf Turesobei thought becoming a hero would solve his problems, he was wrong, dead wrong. When the young wizard joined his father on a quest for the Storm Dragon's Heart all he wanted was a bit of adventure and freedom from the pressures of being heir to the High Wizard. Now with war looming his clan sees him as a storm-powered super weapon, and expectations are higher than ever. But every time Turesobei uses his new powers, they threaten to overwhelm him. And the mysterious destiny hinted at by his bat-winged fetch draws closer every day. Then he receives a bloodstained note from Iniru, the ninja cat-girl he couldn't help but fall in love with, and life gets really complicated. Turesobei must choose, love or duty. The wrong choice may doom the world. But saving everything he cares for might mean losing himself. Book 3: The Forbidden LibraryTuresobei may have saved the world, but has he doomed everyone he loves? Trapped in a strange and dangerous land, Turesobei must find a way to get his sister and his friends home. But Awasa, his aristocratic fiancé, has been twisted into a mad and monstrous creature by dark magic. Now she leads an army of demons, but she still only wants one thing -- him. Aided by the bear-like goronku, Turesobei and his companions race across a landscape where the smallest mistake can kill you. One place might hold the knowledge they seek, only there's a reason it's forbidden.

Storm Phase Series: Books 1-3, by David Alastair Hayden

Review Praise for Books in the Storm Phase Series"This is one best books I have read in a long time. It has the right amount of humor, action, and adventure you could want in a novel. I highly recommend this book!" -- Scott Baynard"I was kept on the edge of my seat through the last few chapters and will hurry to the next book! I recommend you buy all the books first and then set aside a long weekend to curl up and read them." -- Clovelle McKelvey"I enjoyed this book as much as any other teen fantasy novel that's come my way. The author drew me in and never lost my interest." -- Brandi"A fun book that mixes high adventure with Asian mythology to achieve a new voice in fantasy. If you like Rick Reardon or J.K. Rowling give This a try." -- Andrew Rose"Hayden weaves a magical tale of enchantment, with all the finer elements that makes fantasy what it is. There is something for everyone in this one, lands of excitement, creatures unknown and magical, a tale of love and so much adventure you can barely keep up! It left me breathless and the characters were completely lovable." -- Kitty Honeycutt"I read a lot of books and this is one of my top 3 favorites." -- Amazon Customer"I found myself thinking about this story when I was not reading it. Hayden colors his worlds well, and his system of magic makes sense as do the intrigues which provide the tension of the tale." -- Connie Jasperson"I literally finished it in a day as I could not put it down. On to the next book..." -- Amazon Customer"Hayden has created a world full of twists and turns that suck you completely in to the story. You become very invested in his characters and story line and I was slightly devastated when I came to the final page!" --Sarah Hagstrom

Leaving Fresno (The Hollow Eyes) (Volume 1), by Crystal J. Kurz

About the Author Crystal J. Kurz fulfills her passion for writing while working from home, though somedays her writing takes her outdoors or on the road. Kurz is best known for her post-apocalyptic themes, but she also enjoys writing humor and self reflective journaling. She finds the most difficult aspect of writing to be the time it requires away form her family. If Kurz is not found surrounded by her family, running a marathon, eating delicious food, or throwing back celebratory shots of tequila, she is most likely hiding somewhere with her nose buried in a book. When she grows up, Kurz would like to be the ruler of the free world or continue writing stories people love to read — whichever comes first. She lives her life along the side of her husband Micah, their four fantastic children, Kanyen, Achilles, Cyrus, and Hendrix, their dog Moose, and Ruby the cat.

The Méridiens are fleeing to their far colonies—and they have reason to run. Over the course of decades, they have lost hundreds of ships, billions of people, and seven Confederation colonies to an alien enemy: an advancing swarm of silver ships transported in the bowels of a gigantic, spherical vessel.

Alex Racine, who once enjoyed the solitary life of an explorer-tug Captain, is now an Admiral and responsible for the lives of a quarter million Librans. Further complicating his life, Alex’s Librans have made it clear they don’t want to settle on his home world. They want a new home, and he must secure them one.

The silver ships await Alex’s makeshift flotilla at Libre, the last colony they consumed. Thus far, Alex’s people have succeeded in skirmishes against the enemy’s fighters. Now, though, they’re preparing to attack the entire alien fleet and halt the devastation of the colonies.

To the surprise and chagrin of his officers and crew alike, Alex concocts a new plan, because he believes humanity faces not one but two alien species, and one may be enslaved to the other. If so, Alex believes slaves should be liberated, not obliterated.

To test Alex’s theory, his people must capture a wholly intact silver ship—a feat never before accomplished. The crew remains doubtful, but their Admiral is determined to communicate with the aliens before he’s forced to destroy them, and his wish is their command.

I'm ready for Book #4 By Terri Skurzewski In full disclosure, I jumped at the opportunity to read an ARC of Scott Jucha’s third installment in The Silver Ships Series. And I’m so glad I did! What began as a three-book series has developed into what could be, and should be, a continuing saga. There are so many directions in which this writer can take us and, wherever that may be, I want to go along for the ride. There are a whole lot more characters, but Scott does a fine job of reminding us who the old players are. And even if you’ve not read the previous two books, it won’t be difficult to catch up.Méridien (The Silver Ships Book 3) struck me as being different and the same from the previous two installments. Explaining “the same” is easy, as we know Alex Racine intimately, expect his choices to be made with stellar morals, expect him to continue his expertise of calculating the future actions of esteemed peers, and foresee him continuing his upward ascent in a society composed of a unique combination of civilizations. The difference between this episode and the previous two books is that now we’re in real life-and-death battles, testing concepts, proving theories, reaching out with open hands and minds to what might – or might not – be a welcoming alien race. Oh, and then there’s the issue of locating and colonizing an entire new planet where the exodus can conclude. Are Alex’s decisions prudent? What does Alex’s best friend, Julien (the self-aware digital entity), think of his plans? You’ll just have to find out for yourself. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did.Scott Jucha, you continue to amaze me with your wonderful character development and imaginative story lines. Please keep writing these books, and I’ll keep reading them. Thank you for your dedication to the sci-fi genre so many of us appreciate. And thank you for the opportunity to read your ARCs of this series. Best regards.

It tied up the story of the silver ships and how the new Meridien's handled the threat of the aliens future attacks. It also dealt with the problem that they encountered at the end of the last book when Alex' home planet showed outright hostility toward them upon their entrance into their system. I truly enjoyed this part of the book. But then it started on what really could have been a totally new book topic as the Meridien's went on to establish their own home world where all lifeforms were a welcome part of their society. I felt that it got bogged down in details on how they started their governing body, going into minute detail of positions held by whom and how they were building Silver Ships of their own, as well as how they were terra-forming the new planet they were going to call home. Not being a scholar of government formulation, and not caring to go into detail regarding its formulation had me yawning and struggling to push through to the end of the book. Also, the fact that everyone is so perfect, other than the President and his cohorts in government who made life difficult for Alex and his people at the beginning of the book is like having a bit too much sugar in your tea.Don't get me wrong, I loved the idea of the story and still think that S.H. Jucha is a writer with much potential, but I would have been content to stop with the first part of the book.

However, it just kept on and on and on.I read the first 2 books but can't make it through this book. This book is not reflective of reality, a former "tug boat captain", with no military experience of note is suddenly the premier military mind.Getting an enemy to come around to your side because you can play music that sings to them? Come on.The story dragged on and I have to give up. I can't see where it's going.

The plotting was so clean it squeaked By RabidReads BLOOD OF THE LOST passed my final installment must-have checklist with flying colours; all of this series’ characters were in attendance (both living & deceased), no stone was left unturned with regards to pending questions, and the do-or-die battle was glorious. Heck, I even liked how the love triangle was settled, and that there was actually a legit reason for Shannon Mayer’s unusually high body count instead of just an author’s prerogative. There was no shortage of explanations in this book, and I was surprised by how well thought out they all were. Minor threads tend to slip along the way forcing quick convenient resolutions, but not Mayer, her wrap-up was so clean it squeaked. I was very impressed with her plotting prowess, and how every tangent was brought to a fitting conclusion without compromising the pacing or action. It’s apparent that all of the outcomes were outlined in advance, and that nothing was incidental.Rylee has evolved into a powerhouse over the course of ten novels, and yet she was stripped of everything that made her special ability-wise when she confronted Orion which forced her to dig deep, and ensured that the closing fight was fresh and unique. However, as much as I appreciated that fact, and that all of the supernatural factions contributed; I was bummed by the author’s trust-in-the-power-of-love approach as opposed to her customary stabby-stabby. It was kinda… trite. While awaiting this title I started reading THE ELEMENTALS series, and found the timeline somewhat confusing, so I’d recommend following RYLEE ADAMSON to its completion prior to commencing Lark’s story. Mayer came dangerously close to two of my deal breakers (i.e. character revival & a love triangle HEA where both guys win) only to pull out of her hair-raising nose dive, and reach an outcome that was beyond satisfying after such a close call with the ghastly alternative.BLOOD OF THE LOST is proof that you CAN have your cake and eat it too! ~ 4.5 Stars

We have watched Rylee grow into a powerful woman, gain allies, lose friends and learn to use her powers to save the world. BLOOD OF LOST finishes off the series with a ton of emotion, action and an ending that left my heart smiling.I never find it easy to write a review on the last book in a series. I know it's important not to spoil anything, so I will keep this review kinda basic. Rylee definitely isn't the woman we first met in PRICELESS. She has overcome many obstacles in her life and has sacrificed even more, but she grew into so much more than I'm sure she ever imagined she would be. There is some love triangle type stuff going on in BLOOD OF THE LOST, but I enjoyed how it played out. I really enjoyed all the parts in BLOOD OF THE LOST with the babies. All the love for them shined through and Rylee's actions at the end really show what a great person she is and how much love she has to share. For those that have also been following Mayer's Elemental series, it was a bit weird seeing and reading about Lark in BLOOD OF THE LOST. A lot has happened in the many years spanning the timelines from where Larks series is currently and where BLOOD OF THE LOST takes place and this book just kept adding questions to the many questions I already had for the Elemental series. There is of course an epic battle in BLOOD OF THE LOST. People are lost, lives are changed and although I think some people will be sad, I don't think anyone will be disappointed at how everything happened. I have truly enjoyed the Rylee Adamson series and I'm sad to see it end, but I look forward to seeing what Mayer comes up with next.* This book was provided free of charge from the Author in exchange for an honest review.

By PixieSmash As much as it broke my heart, this was truly a fitting and proper ending for Rylee. I cried and sobbed and wanted to throw my Kindle against the wall, but that's the effectiveness of Shannon's writing; I even told her the night I finished the book, if these had been my characters and story, I'd have done things the same - heartbreaking as it is, because no matter what, as a writer, you have to stay true to your characters. Shannon has always done that, and she's done it til the end with Rylee and her band of misfits. She will always have my respect for that alone. The only thing that took away for me, and not by much, is I felt there were a lot of POV changes. Sometimes it felt unnecessary - I wanted to stay with Rylee, it's always been her story - but at the same time, some of those POV changes really plunged the dagger deeper into my heart and started up the waterworks, even if they were only a couple sentences. They were effective, no doubt. So I suppose I'm more undecided on how I truly feel about all the POV chapters.Things do end on a bit of an open door for Rylee, and what her options are going forward. For certain though she's got her hands full! There was an alternate ending Mayer made available to her newsletter subscribers.... let's just say it did not fit the story or the characters at all. Well, I suppose in its own way it did fit Rylee, but it didn't work for the overall story, and the many threads of the story that were still left to be tied off at that point of the story. So I'm grateful for the chance to have seen what else was kicking around in SM's mind, I'm glad she realized all the reasons why it just wouldn't work for the finished product.
