This book is inferior to the first (3 stars).Pros1. A suspenseful story that won't bore you.... and unfortunately that's it...Cons1. Multiple POVs done badly.The first book was almost exclusively filled with Rath's POV. There were others but their stories only added depth or enabled the plot to move forward. The detective's POV was prevalent. It worked... why break it?In "Rath's Gambit" we get a sloppy 4 or 5 POVs of superficially depicted characters and a lot less of Rath. I didn't care about them.One of them is a "idealistic and pure young woman" that gets deceived by an older "despicable manipulator". The seduction was so stereotypical i had to close the book up or risk throwing the tablet out the window. Maybe i'm too cynical but no woman i ever met would fall for lines like those.2. Rath doesn't evolve...same as the first book really. He may not be as clumsy but you can't really identify him as an assassin. He is more a "Mary Sue" wannabe with cool implants and gadgets rather than a kickass assassin.3. In terms of world building and location flavor we get a rather good description of a prison "colony" but not much else. The first book was full of interesting locals. This one isn't.I really hope Piers Platt actually reads customer feedback. Rath's story has tremendous potential.The universe described can probably spawn more series if the author doesn't drop the ball with this one.p.s I have NOT received a free book copy to write this review.

By David Hall I received the first book the The Janus Group series directly from Piers Platt, in exchange for an unbiased review. I liked it so much that I purchased this sequel, even though I could have gotten it at no charge.As other reviewers have mentioned, "Rath's Gambit" contains less action, and more intrigue, which in my opinion moves the story along very effectively. Rath isn't a very sympathetic character in the first book, "Rath's Deception". In fact, he's a gutter rat whose only redeeming value is his loyalty to friends and family. By "Rath's Gambit", he has developed an informal moral code of sorts, which in effect aligns Rath more with the "good guys" than even he suspects.Some of the things I really appreciate about this series are: The realistically cool science and technology developments, some of which are in development now; Very realistic police investigation methods (I'm a retired cop, and the approaches rang true to life); All of the main characters are developed beyond superficial sketches, and most of them grow in a multi-dimensional manner.Speaking of multi-dimensional, author Piers Platt demonstrates that quality in his transition from a soldier writing autobiographical non-fiction to this clearly creative sci-fi. I write book reviews so that others may get turned on to new works by both favorite authors and new discoveries...and to provide my opinion when I believe a book is less than awesome. The Janus Group series is definitely of the former category. I think you will enjoy a good time, and at a very reasonable cost!

By Michael I have a couple problems with the book and series, dont get me wrong, this is one of the best sci fi series I have read in some time. I hope that my comments do not contain spoilers or information that will ruin the story for future readers. If you have read the first book then you know the path that Rath is taking and what the Guild represents. My first problem is why would the Guild want to dispatch their top agents at the end of their 50 kills? Why not just wipe their memories? Keep them as agents... I personally like the first book more because Rath was figuring out how to dispatch people, it reminded me of a sci-fi Lawerce Block hit man Keller.The second problem I have is the over use of EMP grenades. Perhaps I am wrong, but wouldn't an EMP grenade shut off everything that is electical including the vehicle someone might be driving? A cell phone someone might be using? All electricty around the effected area... the author uses it as a crutch in alot of situations to get Rath around certain problems.Overall, it is a very good book and a very good series, just a couple questions I had... hope this review helps and does not disuade you from reading these excellent books. Looking forward to the 3rd.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute night time read for the kiddo. By FJR1300 I read this to my kiddo over several nights as she was going to bed. While it was entertaining, there were MANY typos and grammatical errors. This gives a whole new meaning to run-on sentence, I suggest using the auto grammar check in Word. While self-publishing is an awesome way for new, amateur or young authors to get their feet wet, it does leave out the vital editing process. Overall, the book was a good age appropriate read for a seven year old. I even kind of enjoyed it; even if I am considered an old fart by some. With some editing and grammar check, this could easily be a five star book. And as a pet peeve, on the page following the end of the story, around the link to follow the author on Amazon, it says, " Your awesome!" My awesome what? iPad? Male pattern baldness? My awesome shoe tying abilities? Oh...YOU'RE awesome... Kind of like "Let's eat grandma" vs "Let's eat, grandma." Grammar saves lives. Or, "Their over they're with there stuff."

Forget what you think you know about Minecraft zombies By Rachel Horon If you thought you knew all about the zombies in Minecraft, you should read their diary as presented by Christopher Craft. Jandra and Mondo are part of the Borg family, and they share their adventures as they have a conflict with a particular villager named Steve. Steve finds their journals and wants to learn more about them. The zombies wonder about the things humans do and have while Steve is surprised by the intelligence level of the zombies. Everyone has their own agenda. It is interesting to see the different points of view, especially when it comes to how they log their experiences. It is the curiosity of Jandra, Mondo, and Steve about each other that will continue the entries for a few more stories. Good start to this series!

They go out after night falls turning any humans they come across into zombies like them.Steve found the zombies cave. He didn't know zombies could write much less have pets. He had the diaries of the zombie Jandra and Mondo. He was amazed that zombies were so smart.Steve and the zombies aren't the only point of views we get. We even get the point of view of the pets. Follow the adventure of these characters through this story.My seven-year-old son loves Minecraft so it was no surprise when we sat down to read this story that he loved it. Can't wait to read the next one.

Out of the other few zombie apocalypse books I have read, none if them go into detail how it started. In this book Hunter finds out the conspiracy goes further than originally thought. On the run from the folks responsible for starting it, he changes his looks drastically in an effort to evade the helicopters, drones and media. Hunter vows to bring light to the plans of the people responsible and make the world a safe place again! After all, he does still have something or someone to live for!!

The photo examples made it easy to differentiate the various types of ads. On my next road trip, I will be analyzing all of the billboards and will easily recall which type of ad is being displayed. Interesting premise becomes weighted down by too much game simulation and political intrigue and poor character development By Catherine Mackay This was an ok read, but I can't say I was dazzled by the book. This is not to say the premise was bad, on the the contrary, it was quite interesting - just not executed well and was so slow moving that I quickly became bored. The author has done a good job creating a complex, layered world whose plot is one of political intrigue created by the death of the Empress Oriana Silvertree. Her will nominates Keira Renault as her successor and here lies the problem - he is a man raised to the minor nobility rank and is not a Silvertree relative. Many of the higher nobles are aggrieved, particularly those who are related to the Silvertrees and use the Convention (rules the nobility subscribe to) in order to challenge Keira's right to be next Emperor. However, the Convention lays out the duties of the nobility and their obligations to the commoners and prevents the un-necessary deaths of said commoners. Instead, simulation games are used by the nobility to challenge one another - these are quite realistic and the nobility must abide by the results. In addition, the nobility use their Talants (not particularly well described by the author and I was somewhat muddled by what they specifically were) to computate the various simulation outcomes. Overall, the novel had some good ideas, but while strong on setting, it lacked character development - I didn't relate to any of the characters - the action was sporadic and the book felt weighted down by the political game-play and simulations. The book itself would have also benefited by a glossary of some kind as there were technical and cultural terms specific to the novel's setting and sometimes it was confusing what the object or cultural reference meant. The author has included some of the character list at the beginning, but this was simply inadaquate to give context to the novel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. integrated story gives excellent perspective to the prepper adventure By Yan Ross Reading the 3 original books in a complete, integrated story gives excellent perspective to the prepper adventure, from conception to implementation.I really enjoy the way Bobby Andrews shows his ability to keep the story line moving while developing the characters in ways the reader can relate to them as real people with human strengths and weaknesses.If you have read any of the three original books, and especially if you haven't yet read them all, this omnibus version is an excellent way to capture the thrust of the challenges faced by preppers -- particularly when their plans must be tested in the face of a real emergency.All in all, an informative read, as well as good entertainment!

Anson's short stories made me laugh out loud and at the same time think about my life, my business, and what motivates me. This book will hit on all of your emotions, which is what I enjoyed most about it. Inspirational without being preachy, humorous without being cheesy. Well, not too cheesy! If you need that little push in your life or something to make you realize that we all overthink too much, this is the perfect book.

Excellent book for business etiquette By Diana Richards This book is an excellent resource book for a first time manager or just someone who manages employees. It gives tips and proper etiquette required for success in business today. It is easy to read and comprehend and an excellent resource book for any new college graduate. I could have used this book when I managed my young employees in my insurance agency. Proper business behaviors are not really taught today. I would recommend this as a gift to give someone graduating from college or someone going into management of employees.

In the last book, Charles Nukid is kidnapped by a bearodactyl. But get this, instead of eating him, the bearodactyl flies him back to Monster Kingdom where he is crowned King of the Monsters. That's right, Charles is now king. However being a king has empowered Charles and the power goes to his head a bit. And Charles really needs his head since Scary School-- and the world-- is under attack from zombies. With the help of his friends, Charles has to find the only thing that can help--a unicorn's horn given freely. Easy, right?Zombie's aren't really my thing. In fact, they creep me out more than any other supernatural creature. But because I love Scary School so much, I decided to brave it. Scary School already had Ramon the zombie, but he's like a cool zombie sports star, so he's not so threatening. But the zombies in this book are. You've been warned! But not so scary you'll have to sleep with the lights on. Unless you want to--that's totally your call.I really enjoyed reading the last adventure of the Scary School kids. It's kind of bittersweet to say goodbye to this series after all this time. Derek the Ghost is a great narrator to this unusual but lovable bunch of kids and teachers. This last adventure really showed how much the kids have grown over the last four novels. If you're looking for a quirky, humorous series for your middle grade readers, then you should check out Scary School. Thanks Derek the Ghost for letting us into your world.

It was interesting to read about monsters, ghouls, and other mythical beasts in the past series. In this final book, when Charles Nukid was named the new monster king, little did he know that he would be challenged by Turlock the Troll and that his friends are on their way to save him.I’m not a big fan of zombie stories. Sorry Derek I find zombies boring. But I highly recommend this book for every young kid not afraid of zombies.The book is funny and entertaining for younger kids. By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: Two boys wonder if pirates wear black and white pajamas with skull and crossbones. No, this story says. Pirates wear a variety of creative styles and colors to bed. They also have some zany bedtime routines!ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations are large, colorful, fun, and full of hilarious details. You have to read through this book multiple times to catch all the visual fun.REVIEW: I am an extreme lover of pirate picture books so of course I had to read this one. And FINALLY, I was met with a picture book that rhymes so smoothly, I wanted to read it over and over! This book was full of laugh out loud humor as the pirates prepare for bed. From their shark fin hairstyles in the bath to the captain's too small pajamas (causing a belly button to peak out) and the wardrobe malfunction of one pirate who laughed too loud, this book is fun from start to finish. The zany and unique pajamas each pirate wears is wonderful! This book definitely shows the softer side of pirates which makes it perfect for the youngest crowd. But the hilarious and silly fun makes it perfect for the older crowd and independent readers.AGE RECOMMENDATION: Ages 4-8 (possibly age 3 depending on maturity of the child and a deep love of pirates:-))

Hairy Hank's situation (you've got to read the book!) was my kids' favorite part. The pictures are great with lots of hidden visual gems. 7 and 4 year old both agree... Two thumbs up! Way up!

Mr. Bear thinks that he needs to take Edith ("The Lonely Doll") and Little Bear away from their beloved New York City to escape the dirty air and streets. But Edith and Little Bear don’t want to move to the country, so they take up the cause of cleaning up the city. They carry signs protesting the city's dirty condition as they march in front of City Hall. Later, they find themselves on the evening television news, much to the shagrin of Mr. Bear. But even with their publicity, the protest does not seem to draw the attention of the city's Mayor. So Edith and Little Bear write a letter and send it directly to the Mayor. And the Mayor sends a letter back, urging Edith and Little Bear to do a little bit every day to clean up the city themselves, and to keep watch for any polluters. Edith and Little Bear follow the Mayor's advice, and they begin to clean up their neighborhood themselves. They even report a nearby building's very dirty plume of smoke rising from a chimney. Mr. Bear, seeing how much Edith and Little Bear care for their home and their streets, happily decides they can remain in their home in the city.

About the Author Dare Wright was born in Canada and raised in the United States. She started her career as a photographer's fashion model, then went around to the other side of the camera and became a highly successful freelance photographer. Her photographs appeared in such magazines as TOWN AND COUNTRY, GOOD HOUSEKEEPING, VOGUE, and HARPER'S BAZAAR. She created several books about Edith and her friends, including the classic favorites The Lonely Doll and Edith and Mr. Bear.

A Treasure By Theseus I stumbled on this book for the first time in many years.It is just as beautiful and creepy and evocative and lonely and charming as you remember it.And this is a large-format book in which the quality of the photography really shines.

Edith and Little Bear set out to clean up New York City to convince Mr. Bear that staying in the city is okay. Great story, great photos, a delight.

By Robert Beveridge Dare Wright, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand (Random House, 1972)Mr. Bear, Edith, and Little Bear live in a thinly-disguised Manhattan. Mr. Bear is not happy with the dirt and stink of the city, so he hatches a plan: move to the country, where things are cleaner. Edith and Little Bear aren't too happy with this idea, to say the least, so they decide that if they clean up the city, Mr. Bear will let them stay.Like most of the Lonely Doll books, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand is somewhat transparent in its motivation, but its heart's in the right place. And turning the attentions of the readers away from the interpersonal relationships among the admittedly odd family and towards outside influences for a change is refreshing. Most of all, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand, unlike most save-the-earth style juvenile storylines, is an eminently believable one; Edith and Little Bear do, in this book, about as much as real dedicated children would be able to do, instead of performing superhuman tasks.My favorite Lonely Doll book, even if you do know that things, as always, are destined not to end well. (If you've already read Edith and Midnight, you know why.) *** ?

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. OUR YOUNG FOLK DO NEED THE EXPOSURE TO THIS WONDERFUL POETRY! By D. Blankenship I cannot think of a better way to introduce the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge than this small volume. The selection is excellent and of interest you the young reader. The commentary is quite relevant as are the pictures which accompany it. I find that often now, our young people go all the way through the early grades in school and many of them have never heard of Coleridge,much less read his poetry. This was the sort of stuff my generation and the generation before it grew up on and cut our teeth on. I truely feel I would be much less richer had I not read it and had it read to me. I do not feel I am any worse for the wear. I am fearful that we are bringing up an entire generation (rightfully or wrong, although I feel it is the later) of young folks who will have no appreciation to this great art form and will miss a lot. This book helps. This entire series helps, as a matter of fact and I certainly recommend you add this one and the others to your library. Actually, it is rather fun reading these with the young folk and then talking about them. Not only do you get to enjoy the work your self and perhaps bring back some great memories, but you have the opportunity to interact with your child or student. It is actually rather surprising what some of the kids come up with. I read these to my grandchildren and to the kids in my classes at school. For the most part, when I really get to discussing the work with them, they enjoy it. Recommend this one highly.

Moore Though now the least known and read of the great English Romantic poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote some of the language's most immortal poems, including "Kubla Khan" and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." William Wordsworth's contemporary, he exercised a profound influence on the better-known writer and the younger Romantics, the latter being especially impacted by his fascinations with the occult and supernatural as well as his innovations with form. Coleridge indeed originated or perfected many genres that soon became English poetry standards, such as the conversation poem (e.g., "This Lime Tree Bower my Prison"), while works like "Christabel" were simply revolutionary on technical grounds. Also, with Wordsworth, he helped bring ballads back into vogue. More important than all this is that his best poems still stand up as remarkable instances of a singular vision - dramatically engaging, technically competent, intellectually respectable, and thematically intriguing. Though not in English poetry's upper echelon, Coleridge remains an important writer with whom anyone seriously interested in poetry must be familiar.This great collection has a generous selection - thirty-five poems over 133 pages. It is not merely representative but essentially comprehensive, containing nearly all of Coleridge's notable poems. This moves it beyond a mere primer; everyone but hard-cores and scholars will be fully served except those wanting substantial supplemental material. As this is an inexpensive edition, we get only a table of contents and a chronology; anyone wanting biographical or critical material, notes, or line numbers must look elsewhere. There are many such editions, but this will certainly satisfy most. The packaging is actually quite nice, especially considering the price; the book is a hardback with strong binding and even a built-in bookmark. Some may dislike its smallness, though the print is relatively large, but at least as many will be glad it can be pocketed. All told, anyone wanting anything less than a critical and/or comprehensive edition could do no better.

This reprinted edition mustbe of an edition after 1893, as that is the lastedition mentioned by E.H. Coleridge in his Preface.This reprint is a wonder for general readers, students,and scholars (particulary the latter, for the notes,publishing histories, and first-time inclusions ofitems not found elsewhere before this edition areinvaluable).The notes below major poems, little known items,and previously not published pieces are extremelyvaluable and interesting. Sometimes it is a little predictable but other times I was taken totally by surprise. Christian Kallias is headed to being a great writer, if not already. My only complaint is, the editing of this book was abysmal. Looking forward t reading more by this author.
