Romantek Corporation creates dreams for its customers--dreams of exotic, historic places and events more fabulous than a time machine. As part of their dreaming apparatus, they're releasing a new product on the market, Soma- gen. The Soma-gen process is part of the dreaming technology, helping cells regenerate and scrubbing out impurities and annoying genetic problems like receding hairlines. Romantek's Chairman of the Board is a perfect volunteer for a high-profile test. He's fit, old enough to have begun feeling the effects of age, and a person used to taking risks. Sergio Corvino is excited to experience his Romantek dream at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro in the year 2000. Everyone is eager to see how his real body fares as a result of Soma-gen. Amber Tachibara will also be experiencing the vacation in Rio with Sergio. He doesn't know it, but she's been sent as a bodyguard. There have been problems with cyber-terrorists in the past, and Romantek isn't taking any chances with their Chairman. Tachibara is tough on the job, but submissive in intimate situations. Her discovery of that side of her surprises both people concerned. When a cyber-terrorist shows up in Rio, can Amber keep Sergio safe? Things can get deadly fast in a dream. Will Amber and Sergio survive their vacation in Rio?

By Katherine Deane I loved the whole Romantek series, and was so excited to read this one!Serge was dominant, sexy, handsome- the main character of my dreams.Amber was amazing! Beautiful, smart, brave... the kind of female main character that made me go "I want to be like her when I grow up.". She kicked butt! (she knew martial arts. She really did. :) )These two together, sizzled with chemistry. I loved the domination and submission, and yum- I really loved the spankings. But this book wasn't just great chemistry and well written characters. It also had a tremendous, action packed plot, that kept me reading through the night. I HAD to finish this book, and find out if Serge was going to be all right. And the world building. Holy cow! Patricia Green blends science and technology seamlessly. I loved the futuristic world she created for the whole series. I can actually picture the Soma gem gel being used in real life in the near future. And the descriptions of their "dream trip" to the past, the year 2000 were wonderful. I want to celebrate at Carnival. This story was fantastic! If you like erotic romance that is well written, with great characters, hot sex, domination and submission, and lots of great fast moving action, this is the book to read. You can read this as a standalone, but you will get even more enjoyment from reading the whole series.

Imagine taking a dream that lets you enjoy an exotic vacation while your body regenerates itself with the help of small nanites. Sergio, the owner of the company gets to do just that and even if he doesn’t know it, he will have a body guard, Amber, who is a cyber expert, along to watch over him. As you would expect, Sergio is none too happy when he finds out, and Amber’s bottom will pay the price. This is a mystery/thriller/dominance/love story, and even with all those tags it is well done. The story flows easily and quickly through to the conclusion. Good characters who stay true and consistent throughout the story. An exciting story with good strong characters, spankings, followed by hot love scenes; what else could you want.

Good book to read By Good bedtime reading Part of a series of books, but can be read as a standalone story...has everything in it as a romance, suspense/bad guy, thriller tale set in the future but the hero and heroine travel back in time. The story starts in the future where nanobytes can cure most ailments. However, while Sergio Corvino the head of Romantek Corporation is trialing the new technology he utilises the 'dream' mode to travel back to Rio 2000 quickly followed by his assigned bodyguard Amber Tachibara. From there the action takes place as a presence stalks them through their dreams and back into the future...Good book to read...Hope there are follow-on stories as I can't wait.

He wanted me to read it to him 3 times. We had to stop to eat dinner, otherwise I would probably still be reading it. I could tell from my grandson's comments that he understood how street sweepers work. I'm looking forward to the next time a street sweeper comes through the neighborhood and my grandson sees it.

So much history By Kristy Heinicke I received an ARC of "Zenko" from the author, in exchange for an honest review.Oh my goodness, Zenko is the first book I've read by J. Rose Alexander, not knowing what I was in for I started this book. Just the prologue alone had me HOOKED. 'Zenko' is J. Rose's installment for the "Woodland Creek" collection, a collaboration of 30 authors all writing about 1 little town in Indiana USA, I was intrigued with the concept behind this collection. As I previously stated just by reading the prologue I was HOOKED, it intrigued me, I HAD to find out just how the Tsukino family make it to Woodland Creek present time... as this story starts off 70 odd years in the past. Filled with history, old world beliefs, customs, sadness, steamy scenes, action... a couple of strong leading females.... then add in mini gods, shifters, magic & a mystery. That ending was bitter sweet, filled with happiness & sadness.Totally FLOVED this story, I want to read some more from J. Rose Alexander. Also I can't wait to read what the others have written for the "Woodland Creek" collection.

First I have to say 2 things: 1- I've mainly been an avid wolf shifter fan and 2- I have never read this author before, but OMG, I loved this totally different style of shifter story and now I can't wait to read more from Ms. Alexander :D I went into this very hesitant & repeatedly told myself to keep an open mind, and then bam! It pulled me right in from the beginning & held onto me until the end, and then left me craving more! I actually read it in 2 sittings coz I did not want to put it down!... Since I never recap stories or give spoilers in my reviews, all I can say is that if you love fiction, and especially paranormal and love trying new books, you absolutely have to get his page turning must read! ... Even tho I was given this to read in exchange for an honest review, I truly loved it and highly recommend this book and author! *** This is an adult fairy tale at its best, and would be an amazing movie! ***

Many layers wrapped up in the tale of the spirits, worth the read By Kim Zenko had me a little confused while starting the prologue and I had to start it over a couple of times. I am glad that I stuck with it and got past the beginning. Once I got into the main part of the story, it was worth it. To understand not only what a Zenko was but the history of the family and the issues they had to face since leaving their homeland was real. While the current day story mainly revolved around saving a woman lost in the woods, there were a few different levels of love and relationships going on. Ava and Blaze are the young generation. It was sad to see that Blaze had such a neglectful life that he wasn’t happy. And yet to watch him bloom, it was a nice change of pace from the normal gal that is developing herself. The sweet romance between Ava & Blaze was young and innocent. It was also good to see that love doesn’t have to be just for the young either.

It brought out a side of life that we often forget in our fast paced world, that of a hot summer day at the pond and a beloved grandparent or even parent by our side teaching us how to fish. I think that Greer did a wonderful job of narrating this story and it was fascinating and wonderful that it came to a happy ending. Teaches the hard part of us growing up and moving away from the way things were.

About The Clone Soldier Chronicles and the Author The central theme of The Clone Soldier Chronicles is…will normal humans become extinct? Will scientists be able to extend life, fix genetic defects, and make perfect humans, and, will they still be humans? The answer is mostly yes, but some no’s. We will still be mostly human, but unless we stop the progress of Econo-medicine, there will be levels of humans; there will be those who can and cannot afford the fix. We already see that now…individuals in third world countries are blind from cataracts, while we can afford the fix. And in first world countries, some go blind from macular degeneration while others can afford the biologicals. And now scientists can change our genes. This is the central theme of The Clone Soldier Chronicles…will we still be human? It follows the history of a single family in their progression from normal human to a new species. The first book, Epigenes begins in current times, with a flu pandemic, structuring of economic zones, and rationing of medicines. It is during that time that humans become epigenetically modified. That’s when your DNA becomes modified from your environment, including from what you eat. Those with access to enough medicines and foods become different from the rest of the population. (Available on Kindle) In book two, a class of super scientists emerges, the Gene Designers, those licensed to modify and clone humans. They want super athletes for The Clone Games. The rulers know they can control the situation…keep those clones from escaping. That is, until Dina infiltrates their complex and escapes with Dorian, their half-human super computer. (Available on Kindle). Book three, is entitled Gene Drifters. That is the process of genetic drift; it is the change in DNA which can occur from contact with life, or in the next generation. It is what takes, becomes permanent enough to be part of an altered order. And the planet is vastly changed by global warming by the time we get to book three. (Available on Kindle). Book four deals with what will happen when all those nanoparticles get out into the environment. In Nanogenes, the bacteria inside some nanoparticles do get out, altering both humans and the planet. (Available on Kindle). Book five describes a newly emerging human population, those that can bridge the gap between the various mutant species by inserting large gene segments into their DNA; these are the Gene Jumpers. Book six, Babel Genes, occurs in the distant future. I don’t want to say too much, but when so many different subspecies of humans exist on one planet…well, we could have a genetic Tower of Babel. I am a Professor of Biochemistry. My area of research is in the eye, hence the eye on all six of the Clone Soldier Chronicles covers. For over 32 years in the lab, I have watched the change in the human species…some from my own research into the delivery of enzymes into the human eye using nanoparticles (http://www.k-state.edu/bmb/department/directory/takemoto/index). I attended Ball State University, receiving my BS in 1971 in Biology. I learned skiing, backpacking, Microbiology, and Chemistry, in random order, at Colorado State University, obtaining the MS in Microbiology in 1973. But California called me home…we Californians are not unlike salmon. I attended the University of Southern California, receiving a PhD in Molecular Biology in 1979. I accepted an offer as faculty in Biochemistry, back in the Midwest again, and away from my home. But, the salmon instincts took over once more, and in 2011, I retired and returned home to California. I do miss my lab, but find that I can do much more cutting edge research at my computer, in my novels, and in a global warming future. Plus, I’m not constrained by those nasty experimental results…virtual data are so much easier to obtain. Game Knight is a fast-paced novella of action and suspense by Andrew Mayne, ranked the fifth best-selling independent author of the year by Amazon UK and star of A&E’s Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne. The first time they came for Kevin he woke up in a forest on the edge of town with a sword and only seconds to save his life before a lunatic with a battle axe nearly split his skull. At first he thought it was a dream, then it became a living nightmare as he found himself night after night having to fight in abandoned shopping malls, dark alleys and swamps on the outskirts of civilization. The rules were simple; they could come for him anytime they wanted, and if he resisted, someone close to him would die. A twisted clash of Fight Club and Game of Thrones where the only way to survive is to never stop playing.

Game Knight follows our protagonist Kevin after he finds himself fighting for his life in a forest with no memory of how he got there. It's no one time bizarre circumstance either as he finds himself captive to mysterious tormentors' sick games. Kevin could try to walk away but that would just result in harm to others, including his own family. The only way out is to play along and hope for a chance to strike back.If you like any of Andrew Mayne's other books I have no doubt you'll like this one as well. The story wastes no time, advancing the plot at breakneck speed. Without going into specifics, when I read Game Knight I was reminded of elements of The Most Dangerous Game, The Running Man, and the insidious traps of Saw. You can always imagine Mayne's stories jumping to a television or movie screen. This is a short read, you'll finish this in a night or two, but definitely worth the read and the best dollar I spent today.

By Bryan Spencer Kevin finds himself pulled into a Dungeon and Dragons type game set in suburbia where he must fight for his life in despatch after despatch all while still living his normal nine to five life. He battles with axes and swords to save not only himself but the girl as well. If you like the TV show Player, or books like a song of ice and fire (game of thrones) and fight club. Then you should give this book a read.

It immediately sucks you into a fast paced story you just don't want to put down. Each chapter leaves you wondering what's next and how the character is going to survive. I absolutely loved it! Great job Mr. Mayne!

Book Four in the military sci-fi Middleton's Pride series, set in the popular Spineward Sectors universe--which is up to fifteen books and counting! The last chapter in the escalating war between the Multi-Sector Patrol Fleet and House Raubach saw the destruction of the so-called Alpha Site at Cagnzyz, but the Imperials were not the only side to take heavy losses during that climactic conflict. In the aftermath of that fateful battle, the burden of command falls to the young, ambitious Lieutenant McKnight. Her top priority is to return to Fleet Headquarters with her surviving crew in one piece along with a freighter full of mysterious technology--but of nearly equal importance is establishing an intelligence advantage over the forces which continue to destabilize the Spineward Sectors to the detriment of its citizens. To do that, she must devise a winning plan and convince Admiral Montagne to let her to undertake it--and then she must succeed in that undertaking, which is certain to be no easy task in itself. Her crew must also learn to adapt to life without the comrades they lost at Cagnzyz, and no member of McKnight's crew will find this more difficult than Lu Bu when she welcomes new life into the universe. Old allies are replaced by new ones, and an old grudge is finally settled when McKnight leads an unlikely assemblage of warships to House Raubach's final bastion in the Spineward Sectors: the Beta Site. Will they succeed, or will House Raubach finally remove McKnight and her allies from the picture? Find out in this, the fourth entry in the Spineward Sectors: Middleton's Pride series!

Another masterpiece, another book by Caleb By Amazon Customer Just because your willing to help out others does not mean it will be easy, that however will not stop McKnight and her crew from trying to do whats right. Their here to help those in need and to vanquish those who oppress, ravage and kill for fun and/or profit. In the latest book (Or in this case, the first in A House Divided, a sideline of the Spineward series) we get to know that the line is not simple white and black.Simply said: Another book by Caleb, another masterpiece. If you like Science fiction I highly suggest you put the Wachter brothers on your list of people to follow here on Amazon.

A lot of new interesting tidbits of information about how things came to be and how they need to now stop them from being restarted. The teasers for more interesting missions with McKnight and Lynch the back story about Traian and who killed his friend Vail. Then the chapter preview of the fifth book in the Middleton's Pride which now has me waiting impatiently.

A solid addition to the Spineward Sector Series By Kindle Customer Having cut my eye teeth (all puns intended) on Asimov & Heinlein, Wachter continues in their tradition of a solid "space opera" that continues to unfold in the Spineward Sector series. The personalizations of the characters and their quirks gives depth. The plot brings in elements from past books and strongly hints at more to come The plot twists and turns of McKnight's Mission are delightful.

What do the punk singer Henry Rollins, the Guatemalan writer Rodrigo Rey Rosa, the American authors Tobias Wolff, Tayari Jones, and George Saunders, the Canadian writer Sheila Heti, and the Russian poet Polina Barskova have in common? At some point they all studied the art of writing deeply with someone. The nearly seventy short essays in A Manner of Being, by some of the best contemporary writers from around the world, pay homage to mentors―the writers, teachers, nannies, and sages―who enlighten, push, encourage, and sometimes hurt, fail, and limit their protégés. There are mentors encountered in the schoolhouse and on farms, in NYC and in MFA programs; mentors who show up exactly when needed, offering comfort, a steadying hand, a commiseration, a dose of tough love. This collection is rich with anecdotes from the heartfelt to the salacious, gems of writing advice, and guidance for how to live the writing life in a world that all too often doesn't care whether you write or not. Each contribution is intimate and distinct―yet a common theme is that mentors model a manner of being.Selections include:Arthur Flowers on John O'Killens James Franco on Harmony KorineMary Gaitskill on an Ann Arbor bookstore ownerNoy Holland and Sam Lipsyte on Gordon LishTayari Jones on Ron CarlsonHenry Rollins on Hubert Selby Jr.Rodrigo Rey Rosa on Paul BowlesGeorge Saunders on Douglas Unger and Tobias WolffChristine Schutt on Elizabeth HardwickTobias Wolff on John L'Heureux. . . and many more

A Manner of Being: Writers on Their MentorsFrom University of Massachusetts Press

Review "What the writers share of their mentors, and what their mentors shared with them, makes for a fascinating work on writing and the student-teacher relationship."―Publishers Weekly"The book does offer arresting memories and useful advice on navigating the writing life."―Kirkus"A collection of snapshots from the past few decades documenting how a variety of writers have found or been given guidance from other writers, both in and out of writing programs. Many different approaches are represented here, from line editors to more mystic sages, from teachers turned life coaches to teachers who did most of their work in the classroom or campus office. In gathering these tributes to mentors, this volume gives us some idea not so much of what students look for in a teacher, but of what they remember, and why it's important to them."―Peter Turchi, author of A Muse and A Maze: Writing as Puzzle, Mystery, and Magic"Liontas (Let Me Explain You) and Parker (English, University of Massachusetts Amherst; Where Bears Roam the Streets) bring together a series of stories and vignettes by writers for writers on the power of mentorship and the myriad ways in which literary and nonliterary guides support, influence, encourage, and serve to provide much-needed reality checks. The included pieces are at times warm, insightful, and amusing, while always staying true to the spirit of the unique relationship between mentor and mentee. Divided into eight sections, the stories fall into categories dedicated to literary "lineages," schoolhouse mentors, outliers, tough love, writers without mentors, and those in need of intervention; each contribution can be read as a stand-alone account, or taken as part of the greater whole. VERDICT These insider stories, recounting, the experiences of beginning writers, poets, and MFA students alike, will resonate with those following a similar path."―Library Journal

About the Author Annie Liontas received an MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University. She is author of the novel Let Me Explain You. Jeff Parker is assistant professor of English at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His most recent books include Where Bears Roam the Streets and Erratic Fire, Erratic Passion.

He rescued me. Now he owns me.

The lifemate bond. An unbreakable, sometimes unwanted, always dangerous link between two people. I watched my father go insane, and my mother broken because of their bond. I swore no matter what, I’d never let that happen to me. I promised I’d fight it until every shred of my being was used up. But I’d never really felt what it was like to have the bond burning in my chest. And once I did? All those promises were a lot harder to keep. When a vengeful pirate pulled me from my escape pod, I felt the bond flare to life. With a single touch, he enslaved me, and with a single glance, he stole my heart...no matter how I fought. Will this man let me keep my sanity and my life? Or will he use the bond to break me into a million pieces? I can’t say no to his kisses, his whispers... but will I be able to survive HIM?

By Kristy Heinicke I received an ARC of 'Taken by Space Pirates' from Flora Dare, in exchange for my honest review. After reading the "Alpha Alien" serial, I was left wondering just what was happening to Thea in all this time... Well I don't need to wonder any more, this is Thea's story, her very eye opening journey. From the very start of this action packed read I was riveted, I NEEDED to know just what happened next, which kept me reading until the end of the book. So much information was inside this book, but also there where some painful scenes. This was longer than I expected, but I still devoured it in no time. You don't have to read book 1 'Alpha Alien' in the "Bound to the Alien" series to fully understand what's happening in this book, but it wouldn't hurt to read them first. I can't wait to read what comes next in this "Bound to the Alien" series from Flora Dare.

LOL Okay, maybe their first meeting wasn't that bad. No wait, it kind of was. Thea came out swinging. Unfortunately, she's overpowered by the man she instantly knew was her mate. The catch? He's human. Thea is determined to fight the mating bond. For one, she's seen what it can lead to. What happened to her Mom was a tragic example of how mating can go wrong. There's also the fact that her mate kidnapped her and has plans to take his hatred of her father, out on her. Thea is, of course, brokenhearted at her treatment by Sam, her mate. She's suffering and isn't sure how much more she can take. Then Sam shows her some kindness and some short, yet fulfilling for her, sexy time. Maybe there is hope for them. Maybe all isn't lost. That hope is quickly snuffed out when Ardal, Sam's First Mate, interrupts the moment and things happen leading to a punishment for Thea. Which Ardal eagerly delivers *cough cough evil witch* and Sam does nothing to stop it. End result? Back to pain and despair for Thea. How devastating would that be to have your mate allow your painful punishment to happen and to watch it all unfold?Things aren't always as they seem. Truths are exposed. Plans are revealed. Hurt and betrayal are felt. How will things end for Sam and Thea? Will Sam find the answers he's been searching for all these years? Will Thea be able to get past what she went through, seemingly all at her mate's hand? Read the book and find out.**I received a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.**

Find Your Strongest Life and Live Life on Purpose By Wanda Brewer This time around, Marcus Buckingham offers many more tools instead of gadgets comparing Find Your Strongest Life to the Truth About You. I could relate to the check points of knowing you are living a strong life: feeling what you do fulfills you, feeling inspired to start each day, wanting to learn something new, and, your most important needs are being met by your circle of support. If prior to reading this book, I was asked to put into words "why" I felt my life was strong and happy, I would have only been able to say, "because I feel like I am in control of what I do." I am a partner in a small business so while I may feel like I often carry the weight of the world on my shoulders as I also wear my mom and volunteer hats, I thrive on knowing I can make things happen instead of having to wait for permission to take a stab at a new idea. Ownership also keeps me inspired to keep learning about what other small businesses are doing. Thanks to Marcus, I can now intelligently put into words why my life is so rewarding. However, it was not always like this, by far might I add. This is where I had to stop short of a perfect five stars. If I had read this when my four children were still very young, I would have been completely frustrated because I was in no way married to a man who would ever entertain staying home to raise the kids while I went after what made me feel strong. I also did not have the earning power needed to hire a nanny, or housekeeper, or yard service and an evening job was not possible due to his travel schedule. This was not addressed in Find Your Strongest Life. Maybe this needs to be the next book Marcus--How to Find Happiness with Your Strongest Life on Hold while You Do the Right Thing for Your Family.Last but not least, while I "get" why you caution being optimistic about everything, this can be a dangerous concept to advocate to the woman whose full time job, not by choice, is raising young kids even though this is not her strong point. What purpose will it serve her to identify the negative aspects of her life when she may not be able to do anything about them at this moment?I would recommend this book to other women, but only to those women who are in my position, whose kids are older so they are free to create their strongest life.

By John Chancellor Today women are better educated, have better jobs, better pay, more choices about mates, careers ... just about everything. But that has not translated into women being happier. Actually with more choices the opposite is true. Womens overall happiness has been on a steady decline since 1972. This decline in happiness occurs across the board, regardless of whether women have children, how many they have, or how much they earn.Marcus Buckingham is a well known researcher. He has written five previous books which centered around the concept that each person will be happiest when they are working from their greatest strength. Find Your Strongest Life got its start from a three hour workshop with Oprah. The workshop was conducted with 30 talented but unfulfilled women. In his mission statement Marcus says, "My mission is to help each person identify her strengths, take them seriously and offer them to the world."The book starts off by citing 10 myths about women. Here are just a few: As women get older they become more engaged and fulfilled. (False) If women had more free time they would feel less stressed. (False) Having children makes women happier. (children create more stress) At work, women are relegated to the lower level roles. (False) There are ten that Marcus addresses and it is the starting point for the book. The book is in three parts. The first part deals with the paradox of modern life. Women have more but it is not bringing the happiness they thought/hoped it would.Part two is a guide to how to live your strongest life. Here the book goes into great detail in how to identify and live your strongest life. Part three is basically a Q & A section. Most women I know feel over stressed, under-appreciated and unfulfilled. They are trying to juggle too many things. This book is the manual they have been hoping for. It will dispel a lot of false beliefs. There are some very valuable lessons about how to identify your strengths and then start living them.Marcus cites specific examples of women and how they found their strongest life.If you are a woman struggling with: "What's life all about? Do I have to settle for or stay in a job I don't like? Do I have to give up my career for my family?" then this is a must read. If you know of a woman going through trying to find her way in life, get a copy and give it to her. Most people have been taught that to be successful you have to work on your weaknesses. Marcus advocates the totally opposite approach. Identify your strengths and build your life around them. You will only be fulfilled when you work on your strengths. This is your natural state. This is a well written, easy to read book. It is full of great information that any woman should be able to gain insight into their lives and put the advice to work right away.Highly recommended.

The title leads you to believe that Marcus Buckingham applies his "decades of research" to once again tell us how simply finding your strength will make you a happier and more successful woman. Don't fall for it - he doesn't prove anything close.I volunteered to read and review this book as part of the Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers Team. In all fairness, I must reveal that I have read another one of Buckingham's books, First Break All the Rules, and I hated it also. Buckingham is extremely well known for his other books on strengths, and he is a very good writer, so I predict this book will also sell very well. The book is divided into three parts. Part I is entitled "Something's got to give" and details the unique challenges and stressors that women face. This part is actually pretty good. He makes some very important points in this section, the most important being that "over the last few decades, women have become less happy with their lives, and as women get older, they get sadder" (p. 21). That conclusion appears to be supported by independent research.Buckingham's explanation for this is that women are not focusing their attention "the challenge of all the different roles you play is not that you don't have enough hours in the day. The challenge of all these roles is that during the hours you choose to work you have too many different things going on at any one time to focus properly no each of them. Your time isn't stretched; your attention is." (pp. 41-42). He supports this conclusion based on the work of Barry Schwartz The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less (2005).Chapters one through three are pretty well supported with notes with references that can be found in the back of the book. The next five chapters, where he presents his strength based solution to the problem he identified in Part I, have no notes - none. We don't get another note until chapter nine and the last six chapters have very few notes to support his claims and advice. So much for a book "packed with research."Buckingham tells women that they need to be strong, and he defines this as 1) successful, 2) instinctively looking forward to tomorrow, 3) growing and learning, 4) needs fulfilled. He never tells us how he developed and verified this construct definition. He also measures this with only five questions:* How often do you feel an emotional high in your life?* How often do you find yourself positively anticipating your day?* How often do you become so involved in what you are doing that you lose track of time?* How often do you feel invigorated at the end of each day?* How often do you get to do things you really like to do?I won't bore you with psychometric theory, but I seriously doubt these five items hang together in a measure that is both reliable and valid. And we will never know how reliable and valid this measure is because Buckingham does not point us to the citation that shows where this measure has been subject to a peer-reviewed evaluation. That is a HUGE problem, and makes everything else he says from this point forward (p. 55) unsupportable. If only women knew how to find their strengths and focus their attention on them, they would be happier. Sorry, I don't buy it - it is way too simplistic. Let me give you an example:"To solve the problems in your life - whether a hostile work environment, a sister-in-law who passively-aggressively criticizes your mothering technique, or a husband who doesn't help our at home - you must do the same: focus your attention on what "working" would look like, organize your life to create a few more of these "working" moments, and then celebrate them." (p. 178)Buckingham tell us to try to see any behavior, whether good or bad, as a thread of strength. Benevolent distortion and positive illusion are other terms he uses to label this technique. So if you work for a bully boss, the pathway to the positive is to find the strength in what they are doing, focus on that, and celebrate it? Give me a break. If you have a bully boss at work, your misery is NOT YOU. It is a dysfunctional corporate culture that is allowing people to behave badly. The way out is not to change your perspective on the abuse, but to change your situation - work with your company and its leaders to help change the culture or get the hell out of there! The final sixty-three pages of the book are suggestions for tactics to lead a strong life. There is some appealing advice in this final section, but you should take it for exactly what it is - anecdotal advice.I strongly recommend you do not waste your time with this book.If you want a good book on happiness written by a real scientist, read The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want by Sonja Lyobomirsky

Acclaimed Lovecraft scholar S. T. Joshi's best pieces on H. P. Lovecraft are collected for the first time in one volume, resulting in an exciting tour-de-force for fans and scholars alike. S. T. Joshi, the world's leading authority on Lovecraft, has written a substantial number of articles on Lovecraft-biographical, critical, philosophical, and bibliographical-over the 40 years in which he has been studying the Providence master of horror. In this extensive collection of Joshi's critical essays, many aspects of Lovecraft's works are studied. Essays on Lovecraft's relations with the Munsey magazines, with Weird Tales, and with the films of his day add sidelights to Joshi's landmark biography, I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft. Joshi also treats such provocative issues as the interrelation of the dream world and the real world in Lovecraft's Dunsanian fantasies, his use of autobiography in his tales, and the many extraterrestrial civilizations he introduces in his longer narratives. Several studies of individual stories highlight little-known facts about Lovecraft's stories, including their literary and philosophical sources and the details of their plots and themes. This volume is a rich treasure-trove of information on Lovecraft by his leading interpreter.

Curtis 5.5" x 8.5" softcover book. 206 pages. It is within the pages of Primal Sources that Joshi truly shines. Collecting together 23 of Joshi's most insightful essays regarding Lovecraft (with some being substantially revised), this volume provides invaluable insight into Lovecraft's life, philosophy and individual works.Reprinted mainly from issues of Joshi's Lovecraft Studies quarterly and the Robert M. Price edited Crypt of Cthulhu, the bulk of these writings bear relevance solely to the Lovecraft scholar. The final third of the book, dedicated to studies on individual works by Lovecraft, will prove invaluable to nearly any reader with an interest in better understanding the man's literature. Especially of note is the inclusion of the previously unpublished essay "Some Sources for 'The Mound' and At the Mountains of Madness", which postulates the influence of James De Mille's A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder on the two works in question.Whether your interest solely dwells with Lovecraft or with the Weird genre as a whole, this book is sure to bear strange intellectual fruit...or, as Lovecraft would have surely preferred, fungi.

3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. No Place to Start By Robert L. Piepenbrink Joshi is the big gun in Lovecraft studies, but this is not the Big Book. It's a collection of essays which were mostly intros to other books, now recycled. By all means read Joshi on Lovecraft. There is a one-volume and a two-volume biography, two volumes of annotated Lovecraft, and AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS with an introduction ammounting to a critical study. Joshi also edited the new editions from Arkham House. But this one's only for the completist. I'm a Lovecraft completist, but not a Joshi completist. That said, if you've never read Joshi on Lovecraft before, about half of this one would go down nicely.
