Disenchanted: Book One (The Celtic Vampyre Saga) Faelynn LeCroix is a woman hell-bent on finding those responsible for the brutal murder of her mother and the abduction of her father. She’s on a quest for revenge and, in her opinion, the bloodier the better. The arduous trail that she has been doggedly following for three years has led her directly into the path of Nathaniel Valour, an Irish vampyre who rules over the territory of New England. At first, she sees him as nothing more than one of the fiends she disposes of on a nightly basis, but something tells her that Nathaniel is different from every other vampyre she has ever encountered on her trail of retribution. The truth is, Nathaniel Valour is different—he is a vampyre with a secret. Upon looking into the eyes of Faelynn, Nathaniel realises that she is the one he has unknowingly been waiting for. Can Faelynn see beyond her situation and place her fragile trust in the hands of a depraved creature of the night, one she swore to destroy every last one of? If she can, Faelynn may find herself closer than ever to quenching her thirst for vengeance. This intriguing and passionate saga would be attractive to the habitual readers of Gothic literary works, paranormal romance, and horror. Reviews: "Dark, brooding and dripping with atmosphere, 'Disenchanted' is absolutely fantastic. With a great ear for dialogue and a wonderfully descriptive style, Farrell sucks you in from the first paragraph and doesn't let you go until the climax which leaves you begging for more." - Ruairi O’Hagan, Cork's RedFM. “Masterful… Challenging… Beautiful… I loved it, I used to live for writing like this!” - Braine, Talk Supe. “Mark my words, C.K. Farrell is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the publishing world. It’s about time an Irish writer threw their hat, and a scholarly hat at that, back into the vampire arena.” - Veronica Salva, New Hampshire Gothic Horror Review. "The Celtic Vampyre Saga is an enchanting and terrifying account of lost souls who seek redemption. It is a lot more than a simple, lustful vampire tale. Instead, it is a mature, artistic, and thought-provoking piece with substance in abundance. Read it, you will not find yourself disappointed, only inspired and enlightened.” - D’arcy Ondine, Artist, Poet, and Author.

The story is more about the main character, Nathaniel, rather than a traditional vampire story - it just so happens that he's a vampire. And the love triangle with Faelynn and Martha is intense. I like Martha more at this point... I'm sure their story has a long way to go!What a breath of fresh air in the vampire arena, compared to the same old, same old stories out there now. I can certainly see how maybe the larger words could scare some readers (I admit, I used my Kindle dictionary several times), but I feel smarter because of it. Shouldn't reading challenge us, too? And the negative reviews about overuse of words - I loved it. It was almost like poetry at times. The story is dense, but it's like a pilot to a TV show - all the characters and their paths are clearly laid out. I'm now reading book 2 to see where they will go. I'm glad I went with my gut for this purchase.

Disenchanted is a refreshing change, in that it portrays vampires in a worldly and historic manner with a whirlwind of dark romance. C.K. Farrell is not only a talented author, but he also a fantastic story teller. Farrell describes the events, characters and even feelings in such a way that it makes you feel like you are there. He invites you in as another character in the book or even just a fly on the wall. The intense description and profound character development kept me from ever putting the book down. The first book proves to be an amazing introduction into this compelling saga.

Good writing! Inventive setting/plot -- Charles de Lint Once planted, it lives everywhere... In a place of origins, the first Fairie Ring withers. Worlds die. Wonder fades. As its last ripple reaches out, fell creatures barricade up the few remaining Bald Mushrooms and wars are fought for the right to possess what precious little remains…. Until Derik, a healer, creeps through lines of armies, thorns, and traps to steal one. Sacrilege. Tying the wonder to his hip in a sack, he finds himself alone on Earth in the gray, declining city of Clarksburg. Without friends, tools, weapons, and even stripped of the ability to read, he must escape pursuit and find refuge for his burden. A burden that stubbornly refuses every attempt to find it a new home. Shadows of war are descending and all Derik has to fend it off is a baker, a chemist, a cerulean sweet, and a withered hope. The chase is on....from world to world and from the Great Lakes to Malawi.

A Halo of Mushrooms, by Andrew Hiller

About the Author Andrew Hiller attempted to travel the road least taken only to fall off. Caught in wild currents, he surfaced to find his commentaries selected four times as best of the year on Washington’s NPR station WAMU 88.5 FM, a pair of his plays fill the New York City stage, and an opportunity to act and write with the original Muppets gang in his Cobblestone Documentary series. His first fantasy novel, A Climbing Stock, grew to reach the top 50 on Amazon’s humor best sellers. In between projects, he has taught art in a psychiatric ward, hosted an internationally broadcast science, health, and tech radio program, and reads everything that makes him go “Huh?” or “Ha!” His second novel, A Halo of Mushrooms was released in December 2015.

A few allow us to imagine sounds so loud they block out reality or a quiet that beckons the reader to wish anything would fill it. Andrew Hiller in A Halo of Mushrooms presents us with a mouth watering fantasy story of wonder about the power of another of our five sense, taste. The only other fiction I've read of comparable appeal to taste was Like Water for Chocolate. The power of the fantasy writing and character creation seems almost Gunslinger like. I can only hope Andrew Hiller continues to write and produce original worlds in which I can lose myself with as much success as the Gunslinger author (Stephen King).

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An excellent modern fantasy By Mike Gagnon Andrew Hiller’s “A Halo of Mushrooms” is a brilliant read. Truly refreshing and unique in the realm of modern Fantasy. Hiller blends sharp storytelling with a deft talent for description that pulls the reader into the fantasy world of Derik the healer, and his journey through the strange Earth city of Clarksburg. Never have I read a fantasy where the author devotes the same attention to descriptive detail for lavish worlds, real life settings and something as normally mundane as cooking. Hiller uses all five senses to draw you into hi world, a rare feat for any author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Halo of Mushrooms is a really good read, and a fun one By David Daumit A Halo of Mushrooms is a really good read, and a fun one, too. Well paced, with characters I enjoyed following. Hiller's take on magic is fresh, organic, and believable. His descriptions of the creative process--whether it involves cooking, problem solving, or spell casting--are so rich and immersive, they could only come from an artistic mind. This is fantasy for someone who has matured beyond the regurgitated D&D stereotypes, but who still wants to experience the joy and wonder of unbridled imagination.

THE TENTH VOLUME OF EERDMANS' 14-VOLUME SET OF THE NICENE FATHERS By Steven H Propp Eerdmans' 38-volume set of the early Church Fathers is subdivided into: Ante-Nicene, 10 vols.; Nicene (described as "Nicene and Post-Nicene, Series 1"), 14 vols; Post-Nicene (described as "Nicene and Post-Nicene, Series 2"), 14 vols. It remains the definitive Protestant edition of the writings of the early Fathers. This American edition (edited by Philip Schaff) is a revision of the original series edited by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson, which was published in England in the late 19th century.Volumes 9-14 of the "First Series" are devoted to John Chrysostom (347-407); his name was John, and "Chrysostom" is an honorific title meaning "golden mouthed," because of his eloquence in preaching. This volume contains his homilies (sermons) on the Gospel of Matthew. The next volume in the series is Saint Chrysostom: Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistle to the Romans [A Select Library of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers of the Christian Church - Volume XI].Concerning the genealogies of Jesus in Matthew and Luke, he notes, "many difficulties might be raised one after another. At first, wherefore the genealogy of Joseph is traced, who was not father of Christ. Secondly, whence may it be made manifest that He derives His origin from David, while the forefathers of Mary, who bare Him, are not known, for the Virgin's genealogy is not traced? Thirdly, on what account Joseph's genealogy is traced, when he had nothing to do with the birth..." (Pg. 6)Commenting on Jesus' statement about "eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake" (Matt 19:12), he states, "For the excision of a member is not able to quell such waves, and to make a calm, like the curb of reason; or rather, reason only can do this." (Pg. 384)About Jesus' statement in Matthew 24:21 ("tribulation, such as never was"), he said, "And let not any man suppose this to have been spoken hyperbolically; but let him study the writings of Josephus, and learn the truth of the sayings." (Pg. 457)This edition is well worth owning, for anyone even remotely interested in early Christianity.

Almost with a touch of philosophy, yet firmly grounded in the reality of business and national affairs, the author argues that ‘there is no reality, only perceptions of reality.’ Perceptions influence our thoughts and actions and these, in turn, are influenced by the ‘lenses’ through which we see the world. There are six such lenses: purpose, authenticity, courage, trust, luck and fulfilment.R. Gopalakrishnan uses, as examples, the lives of ‘ordinary people’ to illustrate his view. By rotating the lenses, Gopal attempts to understand what success in career and life really means. While biographies of celebrities are inspiring to read, they are often read like dramatic fairy tales-out of the scope of an average person. But in Six Lenses, Gopalakrishnan narrates the stories of PLUs (people like us)—as he likes to call them—from business and society, whom he has known during his illustrious career. He elucidates the extraordinary lessons that can be learnt from everyday experiences and shows how, by altering our perceptions, we can better overcome the challenges we face at work and in family matters.Thought-provoking, profound and questioning, Six Lenses will make you look at your life and career in a different light.

According some estimates, about a trillion photos would have been taken in 2015.In his book, Mr Gopalakrishnan uses “six lenses” to tell stories about “people like us” and any doubts the reader may have about how chairmen and managing directors can be ordinary people will disappear within the first few pages of the book.Like an ace photographer, Mr Gopalakrishnan uses the right subjects and lens to capture authenticity, purpose, trust, luck, fulfilment and courage- topics that can be deceptively simple and require skilled handling. The subjects are drawn from contemporary business and society, the author’s personal and professional life, and history. The references to historical figures can pique the reader’s interest with facets not widely known or discussed. These are times of the Selfie and so it can be assumed people are comfortable turning the lens on oneself. Mr Gopalakrishnan offers six lenses for a better view of success, career, and relationship. Of particular interest will be the “Luck” lens and here author offers two types – earned and unearned luck. The author also shows that he is a passionate storyteller by opening up his “Ideas Bank” to the readers.Links to TED Talks and other literature is a bonus for the readers.

The Dream Café, by Duncan D. Bruce, Dr. Geoff Crook

Review

“I enjoyed this book and think it works well as a volume of ideas and innovation wisdom” (Cambridge Business, July 2015)

From the Back Cover

Feed your creative spirit!

The key to business success and growth is innovation. But how do we become innovative? Creating the future means forgetting the rules that confine us and using our imagination to take inspired risks.

Embracing collaboration and uncertainty has long been a vital ingredient of success, beginning with the creative thinkers and doers of the avant-garde whose ideas and creativity thrived in café society. The Dream Café shows how businesses can learn from these counter-logical and irreverent ways.

This book is a unique compendium of attitudes and techniques that will allow business leaders to survive and prosper in an unpredictable future.

These tried-and-tested principles, already in practice at leading global brands, will enable you to formulate, refine and deliver big brand ideas that will disrupt and redefine the market.

I dragged the door open. The bell jingled against the glass, and a swell of warm sporting-goods air bulged out to greet us.    Beecher pushed past me into the brightly lit store. I followed and we stood side by side, wiping our sneakers on the big mat inside the door and giving our noses a chance to thaw out.    “Oooo.” Beech squinted over the top of his fogged-up glasses. “Tool.”    My brother has a problem with c’s. They come out sounding like t’s.    I pulled off his glasses, wiped the fog on the hood of his coat, and slid the glasses back on his face.    “Ooooooo!” He blinked as the blur of shine and color suddenly sharpened into racks of jerseys and shoes. “Really tool.”    He stood there, barely breathing, taking it all in. The bats. The balls. The tables heaped with Wheaton University hoodies. The giant flat screens mounted high in the corners, all tuned to the same basketball game, the play-by-play blasting through the store.    We’d been here before, lots of times, back when dad still lived with us, before he moved to Boston. Beech had been pretty little then, so he probably didn’t remember. still, he’d never been a sporty kid, so who knows why soccer cleats were suddenly so fascinating to him.    “Superhero tore,” he said, his voice filled with wonder.    I looked at him. “What?”    “Superhero. Tore.” He threw his mittened hands wide. “see?”    “I see sports equipment,” I said.    Beech gave me a sad look and shook his head, like I was a pitiful case if I couldn’t recognize a superhero store when I was standing in one.    And really, as I unzipped my coat and peeled off my gloves, I realized he was kind of right.    I headed toward a rack of high-tech workout shirts. Here in Wheaton, kansas, I was not known as a superior athlete (or, well, any kind of athlete). still, I could totally rock a shirt like that. Comic book geniuses may not be ripped, but we get sweaty too.    I whisked through the hangers on the rack, thinking black might be my speed. Or no—red, like SpiderMan. And like the Red sox. (My dad would like the Red sox part.)    I stopped. dad was going to ask me what I bought. He was going to flat out ask. I couldn’t tell him T-shirts. I wouldn’t be able to stand the disappointment crackling through the phone line.    Beech tugged on the bottom of my coat. “Tut.” It was his way of saying my name. “Ine Man.”    “Beech. This is a sports store. There’s no Iron Man.”    “Uh-huh.” Beech whipped off his mittens, shoved them at me, and shot like a laser to the baseball aisle, the hood of his puffy winter coat flopping against his back.    I caught up with him beside a display of baseball helmets.    He stood on tiptoe, inching his stubby fingers toward a helmet at the top.    “Ine Man.” His voice was hushed with awe.    “Beech. It’s a baseball helmet.”    I pulled it down and handed it to him.    He held it like a precious jewel. “Ine Man.”    And  in  a  weird  way—again—he  was  kind  of right.    Beech lifted the helmet and placed it reverently on his head, as if he were crowning himself king. It dropped down over his eyes. He tipped his head back so he could peer out at me.    “Tool?” he said.    “Way cool,” I said.    “Hey, guys. Can I help you find anything?” I looked up.    A girl in a Bottenfield’s T-shirt stood beside us, flashing a sporty smile. The white plastic name tag pinned to her shirt said JESSICA, and I could tell right away she was big into athletics. Her hair was pulled back in that perky sort of ponytail girls wear when they play sports, with shiny blond streaks, probably from playing outdoor sports, and her high-performance running shoes gave her a sporty bounce when she walked. You could tell she felt right at home around athletic equipment. she even had a neon pink soccer ball tucked under her arm.    “I don’t think so,” I said. “We’re not sure what we’re looking for.”    Beech nodded. The helmet slid down over his face. His voice echoed out from under it: “Tarts.”    “Tarts?” Jessica looked confused.    I deciphered for her. “Cards,” I said. “Gift cards. From our dad. For Christmas. We’re here to spend them.”    “Ah.” she nodded. Her ponytail bounced. “I get it. Just look around, and if you need help, let me know.”    She started to turn away.    “Tut superhero,” the helmet told her.    Jessica stopped.    I closed my eyes.    We’d been through this with our downstairs neighbors, two different breakfast waitresses at the Atomic Flapjack, and the guy who emptied the change machine at the laundromat. And even though it was nice that my goober of a brother thought I was a superhero, I knew in my heart it would only end up one way: me looking pathetic.    Jessica smiled down at Beech, in that bright way people smile when they’re trying to figure out what he’s saying. “You?” she asked him. “You’re a superhero?”    “No.” Beech tipped the helmet back. “Tut.” He grabbed the front of my shirt and tugged.    She gave him another bright smile. “Tut?”    “He means Tuck.” I peeled his fingers from my shirt. “short for Tucker. It’s what he calls me.”    “Tut draw superhero. And win.” Beecher threw his hands wide. “Win big.”    Jessica looked at me.    I shrugged, kind of embarrassed because I didn’t want to brag. And also because it was a pretty big deal and I kind of did want to brag.    “You know H2O?” I said.    “Big superhero,” said Beech. “Really tool.”    Jessica nodded, clearly puzzled.    “They had this contest to invent a sidekick for him. I invented a sidekick named Beanboy and sort of”—another shrug—“won.”    “Oh!” Jessica’s confusion cleared up. “Just like my niece. she won first prize in the art contest at her grade school.”    “Yeah,” I said, even  though  it  wasn’t  like  that at all.    Jessica flashed another smile. “You guys let me know if you need any help, okay?”    She ambled off in her bouncy white running shoes, and as she went, she gave the pink soccer ball a spin and stuck her index finger under it.    I stayed where I was, looking pathetic.    Dad had told us to spend the two gift cards on anything we wanted. I’d tucked them in my shoe. The round plastic corners were starting to wear a blister on my foot.    Beech wanted a batting helmet. He wouldn’t use it for actual batting, of course. But I knew for sure he’d sleep in the dang thing. so he was taken care of.    I left Beech admiring himself and the helmet in a mirror, and wandered through the aisles, searching for my sport.    I sighed. This would be a lot easier if dad had sent  gift  cards  to  Caveman  Comics. At  Caveman, I wouldn’t even have to look around. I’d head straight for the Reference section, pull The Dark Overlord Comics Encyclopedia: The Definitive Guide to the Dark Overlord Universe from the top shelf, third book from the left, haul it to the counter, and plunk down my gift card. The whole thing would take approximately twelve seconds.    I ran my hand over a lacrosse stick. Because who knows? I could have a real gift for lacrosse.    Or no—fencing.    I slid a fencing foil from the rack. It was kind of like a light saber. Without the light part.    Fencing might be just the thing to bring out my inner Jedi. I wielded the foil before me in both hands and spun around, ready to take on the empire. The bell jangled against the Bottenfield’s door, and a clump of guys blasted in on a gust of late december air. Guys from my school. Guys who actually belonged in a sporting-goods store. One guy especially. Wesley Banks.

Art has been his way of expressing himself, so it is no doubt an extremely important part of his life. They have had to give up their bulletin board to the girl's basketball team, and their club is dwindling in numbers. How can they keep their standing if they don't even have a way to attract attention? Beanboy has a plan. He has decided to sign the art club up to compete in the dodgeball tournament. The Artful Dodgers need to make a stand against the jocks and take back their rightful place within the school hallways, but can they do it?My thoughts:Tucker is an excellent character! While I think that some of the humor is missing within this second novel, Tucker still stands out as an endearing, lifelike boy. He is easy to root for and easy to identify with. I always look forward to the illustrations as they definitely remind me of reading my superhero comics when I was a child. The imagination just screams off the page and is enough of a reason to pick up this book. It helps that the story is also wonderful. It is easy to recognize school issues and necessities as well as hope that Beanboy overcomes the bumps in the road.

By Just Trying to Help This is a very nice book and I think that the premise and action points are all very strong.I liked the idea that this kind of nerdy comic book kid could excel at dodgeball, and spread the word about art. I really liked the level of caring that Tucker (Tut) has for his little brother Beech. And the had all the prerequisite bashfulness that seems to permeate the genre, from him not wanting to be seen by the local sports hero in the sporting good store, to how he feels about a cute girl. Bashfulness in spades. So I give the book 4 stars. I guess somehow the book didn't really stand out for me. I really liked the ending, I thought it was pretty strong. And the casual illustrations here and there were fun and broke up the text nicely, although, the illustrations are only 5% of the book tops so they don't get in the way much. Its a nice little book and certainly safe for any child to read, it stays away from all the "hot topics" (except for the divorce part where his Dad is never there). The author does a very capable job, and is even clever in places. But I didn't want to go out and but the first book, which I sometimes do. And it didn't make me want to read any future books. It was just a nice little read.

BULL It's not easy saving the world when you have to watch your special needs little brother, complete your chores and finish your homework before bed time. Tucker MacBean is back and if you thought what he did in the first book was cool, you'll find this book even cooler. Faced with the prospect of losing the one crummy bulletin board the school art club was given, Tucker and his friends are forced to combine forces against popular, but secretly mean, Wesley Banks and face the bully in an ultimate game of dodgeball. The author must have been a thirteen-year-old boy in another lifetime. Her tone is spot on in this heartwarming, funny and touching in this excellent sequel. You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one, but you should because it's a great read.

If you are seriously considering running away to paradise and funding the rest of your life by owning a beach bar, you HAVE TO read this first. I have dreamed of doing this but my dream consisted of much more lounging on a white sand beach and frolicking in warm azure seas than hot sticky kitchens, cockroaches and long, draining hours of labour. What a wake-up call!!!I honestly could not put this set of books down and I never wanted them to end. Told with an ease of writing and humour that takes you right into the story, the pages fly by. The only thing I wished it had (other than more pages so that I was still reading it) is photos!! I SO wanted to see the restaurant, the street front, the owners, so that I had the right picture in my brain. Turns out, at the end, you can ask him to send you pics and I did and found I had it all wrong in my head so that was disappointing. (It is described as being below street level and I had a hard time figuring out what that looked like... a photo would have been SO GOOD.

'More Ketchup than Salsa: Confessions of a Tenerife Barman' was one of the first books I downloaded in kindle format-I found it in the amazon 100 top free bestsellers and grabbed it. These are great books telling of Joe and girlfriend Joy's adventures changing their lives from working on a Bolton fish market to moving to a new life in Tenerife. Very witty, a very enjoyable read, his sense of fun really comes across. 'Even More Ketchup: The Final Dollop' completes the set. I'm currently enjoying this all over again!

Courageous space explorers embark on a mission to make contact with alien races light years away, while the Earth they leave behind ages twelve hundred centuries It’s the most exciting discovery since humankind first began watching the skies: SETI scientists detect starship “trails” in a galaxy many light years from Earth, and at long last the dream of human-to-alien contact is attainable. But the courageous crew of starfarers assembled to take on the monumental endeavor must sacrifice the only lives they’ve ever known and the people they love; the Earth will have aged many thousands of years when—and if—they are finally able to return. Still, their hunger for knowledge of the universe and the extraterrestrial races that inhabit it is too great to deny, and the Envoy rockets off into the vast unknown. It’s a perilous mission that will profoundly change everyone it touches—even as the passing millennia transform the Earth in ways no one could ever have imagined.   Of all the science fiction extrapolators to emerge in the twentieth century, none were more visionary and few as prolific as the great Poul Anderson. Starfarers, his ingeniously imagined space exploration adventure, still stands tall among the most intelligent, enthralling, and unforgettable science fiction novels ever written.   This ebook includes the bonus stories “Ghetto” and “The Horn of Time the Hunter.”

After discovering science fiction fandom and earning a physics degree at the University of Minnesota, he found writing science fiction more satisfactory. Admired for his “hard” science fiction, mysteries, historical novels, and “fantasy with rivets,” he also excelled in humor. He was the guest of honor at the 1959 World Science Fiction Convention and at many similar events, including the 1998 Contact Japan 3 and the 1999 Strannik Conference in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Besides winning the Hugo and Nebula Awards, he has received the Gandalf, Seiun, and Strannik, or “Wanderer,” Awards. A founder of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, he became a Grand Master, and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.   In 1952 he met Karen Kruse; they married in Berkeley, California, where their daughter, Astrid, was born, and they later lived in Orinda, California. Astrid and her husband, science fiction author Greg Bear, now live with their family outside Seattle.

By Jennifer Glover This is the sweetest little counting book for kids. I purchased 3 as gifts and each recipient had a fit over Pepper. The illustrations are beautiful and the author's style is reminiscent of a modern day Beatrice Potter. This book is the perfect gift for any baby shower, first birthday or Christmas gift. If you know loads of people with babies on the way, stock up! When you see it in person, you're going to want to pass it on to every child you know to cherish in their book collection.

It's a counting book, so it will match up well with the things a preschooler is learning, but the artwork is so excellent that I bought it for my kindergartener and she enjoys looking at it too. Ms. Hartsig is a wonderful artist and it is inspiring that she is self-publishing her own work.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. expected more detail By Seek Felicity If you are going to Guatemala, just buy the full travel guide. This little book is pulled directly from that travel guide. There is no in-depth coverage of Antigua and Guatemala City. If you have have read or used Moon Guatemala, this is the same thing with 80 pages torn out and put into its own book. The description alludes to this fact. If a book is going to be a spotlight of a city, I would hope the author would do more to detail the intracies of the city(ies). Moon really only gives a cursory overview as it is and Antigua and Guatemala City are two locations that could merit extensive details. While the book is light and easy to tote around, I would just buy the full guide for a few dollars more. If you are going to Guatemala, you are going to want to experience more than Antigua.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Practical information of value to the traveler. By Robert denham I purchased this book because we will be making a trip to Antigua. The section on Antigua has good maps and information on things to see, where to eat and where to stay. The brief historical section gives a simple overview.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Problematic Printing Press By TurtleTera Reading this book is like a MENSA exam; at least I know I am helping to avoid degenerative brain disease. The words comprising bold headings for each paragraph of text are all missing letters! How am I to know what M_ _N_ _ _A M_ _C_ _ M' signifies? At least I am having an easier time with LA_N_RY.

Newbery Honor–winning author Patricia Reilly Giff tells a vivid, contemporary story about a remarkable boy who risks everything for his family and a bold girl who helps him. At home in Mexico, Mateo knows where he belongs: with Mami, Abuelita, little brother Lucas, and big brother Julian. When Julian leaves to work in el Norte, the United States, Mateo misses him. And when the family stops hearing from Julian, Mateo knows he has to find his beloved brother.   With only his old notebook and a backpack, Mateo heads for the border, where dangers await: robbers, and the border police, who will send him back home or perhaps even put him in prison. On his journey, Mateo meets Angel, a smart, mysterious girl who can guide his crossing. Angel is tough; so is Mateo, and his memories of his loving family sustain him. Because no matter what happens, he can’t go home until he finds Julian.

Until I Find Julian, by Patricia Reilly Giff

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—When his brother, Julian, stops contacting his family in Mexico, Matteo becomes convinced that something is wrong and he determines to go to the United States to find him. During his attempts to cross the border, he meets Angel, a mysterious girl who has repeatedly crossed the border herself. Angel takes pity on Matteo and helps him get to his brother's last-known location. Border cops, drowning, thieves, fire, and strangers with ulterior motives are but a few of the dangers that lurk around every corner for the duo, but Matteo is determined to find Julian. Will he succeed? Who is Angel? What happened to Julian? The well-known and respected author easily brings Matteo's world to life and ensnares readers with her strongly developed plot and characters. The writing style is unique and keeps up a good pace. Transitions between the past and present are smooth and will keep readers' attention. The imagery Giff employs is vivid and helps readers to step into Matteo's shoes. VERDICT Middle graders who enjoy adventure, realistic fiction, and multicultural stories will find much to appreciate here.—Kira Moody, Whitmore Public Library, Salt Lake City, UT

How can I tell Mami and Abuelita what I’ve done?I sneak along the alley and sit at the back of the house, leaning against the splintery boards, so angry with myself. I sweep up a pile of stones and toss them into the green creek, skipping them like frogs jumping from one slippery rock to another.Sometimes the stones miss the water. My friend Damian says my aim is terrible. And he’s right. With the next stone I hit a tree branch almost over my head, just missing my brother Julian’s wooden birdhouses. Four or five finches fly up and scatter as a stray cat watches.“Sorry,” I whisper to the birds, and to the cat, who watches with great tawny eyes, ready to pounce on anything that moves.I turn my head. Between the uneven boards of the house, I see Mama and Abuelita at the kitchen table, their heads bent over squares of cloth. They never stop working; they make scarves and quilts to sell at the market. Sometimes they sew red and yellow pieces together, or sunny greens and blues, reminding me of the creek. They never stop talking either. How can I go in there without any money? Not one coin!I close my eyes. Today, instead of sweeping at the car factory after school, Damian and I played catch with motor bolts while the foreman, Miguel, was eating in his office.I missed, and the bolt flew over my head, denting a car door.Damian slapped his head. “I should have known, Mateo.”Miguel came from his office, his mouth still full, pointing with his fist. “Out!” he yelled.I couldn’t stop laughing at first, thinking he was joking. But Miguel almost never joked or smiled. “Go on,” he said, red-faced and furious. He didn’t even pay me for last week’s work.Twelve years old, and I’ve been fired from my after-school job. A small job, but still . . . Now I watch Mami and Abuelita stitching. I’ll never be able to tell them!I listen to what they’re saying. It’s the end of the month; my brother Julian will have sent money all the way from Arkansas. There’ll be meat for dinner. Chicken, maybe, or small pieces of shredded beef mixed with rice and gravy.Which will I pick? It doesn’t do any good to tell myself I don’t deserve a good dinner; my mouth waters. Chicken! I almost smell it stewing in the pot, with a pinch of one of Abuelita’s spices that grow tall on the windowsill, and a carrot or two, chopped and soft.“Enough to give you a handout,” I whisper to the cat, and rest my hand on her grimy head. The rap on the front door is loud. Someone is pounding hard; it must mean trouble. Mami stands up so suddenly the chair clatters and falls behind her.I peer through the open spaces in the wall, to hear a voice calling. A moment later, Julian’s old friend Tomas fills the kitchen doorway.Mami pushes a chair toward him. I can see the worry in her face. Why isn’t Tomas with Julian in Arkansas? They crossed the border to work in America together. What’s brought him back here?Abuelita goes to the sink and pours a glass of water for Tomas. He sits at the table facing them, slowly shaking his head.I knot my fingers together, afraid to hear what he’ll say. When he speaks, his voice is low, his words slow and spaced apart. “Julian,” he begins. “All of us. We worked on a building that would be the tallest one in town. Ten floors. Hard work. Satisfying.”“Please--” Mami says.“Everyone knew we had no green cards.” He looks up. “No permission to work in America. No permission even to be in that country.”Mami’s hand covers her mouth as Tomas tells of la migra, the border patrolmen, surrounding the construction area where they worked. “The illegal workers were loaded into the truck and sent to a detention center.”Abuelita sits straight, almost as if her back is made of iron. “And Julian?”I hold my breath.“We were on a scaffold, two flights up. Any minute they’d see us. I grabbed Julian’s shoulder. ‘We have to run. It’s the only way.’“I saw him peering over the edge. “ ‘No, Julian! We can’t jump.’ ”Tomas puts a small roll of bills on the table. “Just before I backed off the scaffold, Julian reached into his pocket and asked me to bring this to you.”He spreads his hands wide. “The owner paid us good money. A generous boss. But now it’s over. I don’t know what my family will do for food.”Mami can hardly speak. “But Julian? Is he all right?”“I don’t know. I managed to climb down and run without being caught. But if he jumped, he may have been hurt. Maybe he’s in prison. Or in hiding. I wish I could tell you more.”And what will we do? I lost my job with Miguel. Mami and Abuelita will have to sew long into the night.I picture Julian just before he left: his hair was so dark it was almost black; his teeth were white and straight when he laughed. I looked up at his strong face. “Don’t go! Stay! Mami said it’s a dangerous trip. Thieves will take your money. And what about the desert, that huge river? What about the police on both sides of the border?”He grinned and hugged me. “I’ve read so much about America--the mountains, the sea, the tall buildings. The prairie grass that waves in the wind.” I could see the excitement in those dark eyes. “I want to be part of it, to paint all of it. I can’t forget the money either. I’ll work at anything and someday I’ll find a place where I can draw, sketch--” He broke off. “In the meantime, I’ll send money home. You know there are no jobs here.”He rested his hands on my shoulders. “This is the way I’ll go. I’ll walk miles to the train and climb on top . . .”“You can’t do that!”He raised his hand. “After the train, I’ll find someone to take me across the north of Mexico and the river.”“You mean a coyote.” I grabbed his collar. “Mami says they’re desperate men. They rob the travelers, and sometimes they even kill.”“I’ll be all right. Once I cross the border into Texas, I’ll stop at our cousin Consuelo’s house. And then, at last, Arkansas.”“But why Arkansas?” I ask.“Tomas says there’s work up there. And I read about it. It sounds like a beautiful place.”Nothing I could say would stop him.The next day he and Tomas were on their way.At the table now, Tomas is still talking. “I have a long way to go. Home first. Then miles of walking to find a job. Any job at all.”Abuelita scrapes back her chair. I know she’s going to pack what little food we have for his journey. After Tomas has gone, I still can’t make myself go inside. I rest my hand on the cat, feeling the burning in my throat.Mami bends her head over the squares as colorful as macaws, her tears dripping onto the fabric. Abuelita picks up her needle and begins to run stitches through two red pieces. Her eyes are almost closed. She won’t let herself cry.Julian has to be all right! What will we do without the money he sends to the bank for us each month? Even worse, how will we know where he is, or how much trouble he’s in? Letters hardly ever reach our town. But we have to know.I have to know.I have to find him, save him, the way he saved me once. And I know the way.Chapter 2LeavingTonight there’s no chicken stewing in the pot, no shredded meat in our bowls. “It’s been a long day.” Abuelita tries to smile. “We’ll have a little rice, a little bread instead.”I tell them about losing my job, but they hardly listen. Mami swipes a cloth over the counter in great arcs, her eyes swollen. She isn’t speaking, she isn’t singing. It’s strange with no music in the kitchen. There’s only the sound of the frogs croaking as they float on the water, their throats puffed into iridescent bubbles.Mami doesn’t want to tell me about Julian, not yet. I know she can’t talk about it.My little brother Lucas reaches out to me as if he knows something is wrong. I grab his hands and swing him around, just missing the table; he laughs, a smear of something across his cheek. The kitchen spins with us: the table with the bowls of rice, the wide window without glass, the green trees outdoors.I put him down and sit at the table. I can’t eat the rice in front of me. I’ll do what Julian did: walk that long way to the train, then somehow cross the north of Mexico to the Rio Bravo. Texas is just on the other side of that river. Once there, I’ll find Consuelo. I’m sure she’ll tell me the rest of the way.I take a forkful of rice. It has no taste; I’m not hungry even though I haven’t had anything since breakfast. My eyes go to Abuelita, the lines in her forehead deeper, then to Mami, staring out the window. She looks the way she did that terrible day Papi died. Our neighbors carried him home from the fields where he was planting in heat that soared over one hundred degrees. “His heart gave out,” his friend Paulo told Mami. “The heat was too much for him.”Now, long after dinner, I go to bed and listen to the ripple of the creek and the faraway sound of a dog barking. I wait until the house is still. The money I’ve saved to surprise Mami on her birthday goes into my pocket. I shrug into my old sweater and wrap a piece of cloth around my waist for a blanket.Abuelita has left a new notebook for me in the kitchen closet. I copy Consuelo’s and Julian’s addresses from her pad, even though I’m sure I’ll remember them.I rest my hand on the notebook. Ah, Abuelita!Once I told her, “I might write a book someday.”She nodded. “I know you will, Mateo. Everyone has something, and you have a way with words, mi amor.” In the kitchen, she cut paper into squares. With rough fingers, she stacked the pieces with a blue paper cover and stitched them together with string. She handed me the book, my first notebook. “Write down your memories: good ones and bad ones. Someday they’ll turn into stories.”Now I slide two bottles of water and a few bits of food into my backpack. I tear a page out of the notebook and write quickly: I’ve gone to find Julian. I put it under Mami’s breakfast plate. They won’t find it until morning. Then I tuck the little book and a pen into my pocket.I’m ready. I climb out the window and glance back at the sleeping house. Rain patters on the tin roof, and a mist rises up from the creek. The cat is curled up under a tree. She’ll have to hunt for every bit of her food from now on. I reach over and run my hands along her rough sides. Then I begin to walk.Behind me, there’s a voice.I turn. Abuelita!“You’re going north across the border,” she says.I swallow. What can I say? “You found my note.” I wonder if she’ll tell me to go back inside. She surprises me, though. “No, I haven’t seen a note. But I knew you would go. I saw you outside listening when Tomas was here.” She touches my cheek. “It’s a very dangerous trip. But I’d do the same thing if I were younger. We are alike, Mateo, you and I. We have great love for our family; it makes us strong.”We sit on the ledge next to the creek. “You must watch everyone and everything constantly.” Her voice is stern. “Think before you act. Move slowly, carefully. Be deliberate.”Her eyes fill. I’ve never seen her cry, not even when Papi died. “You are everything to me.” She slips a medal on a chain around my neck and money into my pocket. The medal matches the one she wears: Our Lady of Guadalupe.“The lady, the Blessed Mother, appeared to a boy,” Abuelita says. “She left her image and a spray of roses on his cloak. You can still see that cloak in Mexico City.” She puts her hand on my shoulder. “She will protect you.”I watch her go back to the house, her head up. My tough Abuelita!“I’ll come back when I find him,” I call after her.And then I’m on my way.Chapter 3The JourneyI reach up to touch Abuelita’s medal around my neck. It’s been so long since she put it there. More than a week? It seems forever. My eyes are closing as I listen to the sound of the motor and try to breathe inside the truck’s close, dark air. I’m almost asleep.Dreaming, Mateo. That’s what it is.I’m lost in dreams. I see our house that tilts against the creek, covered with Julian’s paintings. It’s miles behind me now. I hear Abuelita’s husky voice as she reads to me.Behind her, Lucas dances around the kitchen waiting for the beans to simmer in the enamel pot on the stove; his eyes are the color of walnuts and his hair grows every which way, just like mine. He sings a song he’s just made up.I feel Mami’s floury hands on my cheeks. And Julian: long ago, as I sleep in bed, creek water plinks on my cheeks; more slides down my neck. Green water, with the smell of weeds and fish! I reach up and grab Julian so he drops the cup, still half filled. We wrestle over the bed, onto the floor, laughing. He’s eight years older than me, my best friend.I’m in the back of a coyote’s truck now; I concentrate on his red baseball hat, which stands out in this rusted heap as we try for the border. In the beginning, I promised him money. “I’ll pay you back someday.”He was chewing on something, ready to walk away, when he saw the watch on my wrist. Julian’s watch. Too big for me, a little battered, but all I had left of him.A moment later, the watch was off my arm, onto his. And I was crowded inside that truck with six others, holding my bare wrist. Now the motor gives a dry cough. The truck heaves forward, then rattles to a stop. “We’ll have to walk,” the coyote says.
