THE TENTH VOLUME OF EERDMANS' 14-VOLUME SET OF THE NICENE FATHERS By Steven H Propp Eerdmans' 38-volume set of the early Church Fathers is subdivided into: Ante-Nicene, 10 vols.; Nicene (described as "Nicene and Post-Nicene, Series 1"), 14 vols; Post-Nicene (described as "Nicene and Post-Nicene, Series 2"), 14 vols. It remains the definitive Protestant edition of the writings of the early Fathers. This American edition (edited by Philip Schaff) is a revision of the original series edited by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson, which was published in England in the late 19th century.Volumes 9-14 of the "First Series" are devoted to John Chrysostom (347-407); his name was John, and "Chrysostom" is an honorific title meaning "golden mouthed," because of his eloquence in preaching. This volume contains his homilies (sermons) on the Gospel of Matthew. The next volume in the series is Saint Chrysostom: Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistle to the Romans [A Select Library of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers of the Christian Church - Volume XI].Concerning the genealogies of Jesus in Matthew and Luke, he notes, "many difficulties might be raised one after another. At first, wherefore the genealogy of Joseph is traced, who was not father of Christ. Secondly, whence may it be made manifest that He derives His origin from David, while the forefathers of Mary, who bare Him, are not known, for the Virgin's genealogy is not traced? Thirdly, on what account Joseph's genealogy is traced, when he had nothing to do with the birth..." (Pg. 6)Commenting on Jesus' statement about "eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake" (Matt 19:12), he states, "For the excision of a member is not able to quell such waves, and to make a calm, like the curb of reason; or rather, reason only can do this." (Pg. 384)About Jesus' statement in Matthew 24:21 ("tribulation, such as never was"), he said, "And let not any man suppose this to have been spoken hyperbolically; but let him study the writings of Josephus, and learn the truth of the sayings." (Pg. 457)This edition is well worth owning, for anyone even remotely interested in early Christianity.
