There were still some issues, like using their instead of there, but overall an improvement!! The story is moving along, and while this may not be the most exciting installment, it was a good addition to the story.

The Veiled Web, by Catherine Asaro

Amazon.com Review Catherine Asaro, author of the popular Skolian Empire series that combines hard science with romance in the far future, explores new territory with The Veiled Web. Set in 2010, this story combines romance, suspense, and cutting-edge computer technology in a Moroccan setting.

Lucia del Mar, the heroine, is an internationally renowned dancer who is also familiar with the latest in Internet technology. At a White House dinner she meets Rashid al-Jazari, a Moroccan businessman who has created a hot new virtual-reality suit and software that could revolutionize Web browsing. A second encounter ends up in an attempt to kidnap Rashid and Lucia, forcing them into hiding at his family's Moroccan home. Here Lucia becomes steadily more attracted to him, even as she chafes at the limitations placed on her as a woman in a traditional Muslim household. She also begins to realize the implications of his work, and how dangerous it could be in the wrong hands.

In this near-future thriller, Asaro considers what makes humans human and the similarities between art and science, balancing ethical and religious beliefs with scientific discoveries that open new possibilities. If you're intrigued by artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and VR, you'll enjoy this one. --Nona Vero

From Publishers Weekly The latest from veteran science fiction writer Asaro (Primary Inversion) is an uneasy blend of cyber-intrigue, exotic lore and romantic clich?. In the summer of 2010, Web-surfing ballerina Lucia del Mar meets Rashid al-Jazari, the sexy inventor of a cutting-edge artificial intelligence system. Lucia and Rashid are kidnapped by international terrorists who covet his invention. While they manage to foil the abductors, in order to keep Lucia safe when they land in Morocco, Rashid arranges a hasty marriage. Cloistered in Rashid's traditional Islamic home, Lucia overcomes her loneliness by befriending Zaki, the uncannily human computer program Rashid has designed. When the terrorists strike again, Rashid's AI system is destroyed, but the unlikely marriage survives. Asaro discourses intelligently on millennial issues but leaves the conspirators and their goalAmind control over the known worldAfar too vague to generate suspense. Nor does the plot convention of a forced marriage that ends in true love provide much sizzle. The book's strengths, instead, are the sensuous and respectful evocation of Islamic culture and the creation of Zaki, the artificial intelligence who comes to life as the tale's most quirky and moving character. Review ''Known for her brilliance at combining science, adventure, and riveting characterization, Catherine Asaro breaks new territory with a compelling story set in the world we know, at the dangerous intersection of cutting-edge technology and the age-old conflict of culture and the human heart. A romance of ideas as well as the story of a man and a woman attempting to build a bridge between two very different societies, The Veiled Web is a thought-provoking and entertaining tale.'' --Mary Jo Putney, New York Times bestselling author''At once thoughtful and imaginative, The Veiled Web is a . . . layering of East and West, of religion and technology, movement and introspection -- and of love and its loss -- all woven into an intriguing tapestry that shows one turning point in the eternal battle for the souls of men. If one knows quite what a soul is!'' --Diana Gabaldon, New York Times bestselling author ''Combines romance, suspense, and cutting-edge computer technology in a Moroccan setting . . . Asaro considers what makes humans human and the similarities between art and science, balancing ethical and religious beliefs with scientific discoveries that open new possibilities. If you're intrigued by artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and VR, you'll enjoy this one.'' --Amazon.com, editorial review''A terrific novel, ripping a path from today's headlines to tomorrow's realities - a page - turning thriller tempered by romance and ethical concerns, with characters (even some nonhuman ones) you'll care deeply about.'' --Robert J. Sawyer, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author ''Asaro discards TV clichés and Time magazine stereotypes to search for the real Arab culture. She chooses her milieu well: the Arabs are a passionate people, and this is a passionate book, crackling with tension between modernity and tradition, art and science, male and female, idealism and cynicism. The attraction and repulsion between her American heroine and Arab hero presage a collision of cultures that will increasingly come to dominate tomorrow's social landscape.'' --Jamil Nasir, award-winning author

Romance is the focus By David Schlinkert Although Asaro has a following in both Science Fiction and Romance, "The Veiled Web", is first a romance; the Science Fiction content is secondary. Asaro's reoccurring theme of emerging machine intelligence serves as a driver for much of the action in the novel, but story focuses on odd and unlikely meeting and marriage of Lucia del Mar, a ballerina bearing a striking resemblance to (dare I say it?), the good doctor, and a Moroccan software designer. Oh, and we must include his son, Zaki, an electronic "tourist guide", who resents being shutdown. With this nicely paced, well written romance, Asaro forges a link between the romance novel and the international espionage genera. Well met!

Something to think about no matter what your background By Amazon Customer An American ballerina and a Moroccan computer scientist enter into a marriage of convenience to escape from kidnappers. She learns about him, his family and his culture while he learns about her and tries to learn who is after them. Meanwhile, the AI entity he's created learns about everything, as they try to prevent anyone from learning about it. The AI proves his true nature in a tear-jerking climax, while the strength of the hero and heroine's love for each other must prove sufficient to overcome their own natures and social conditioning. In a fresh and exciting turn from her more familiar science fiction epics, Asaro sets The Veiled Web in the near future (2010) on a very recognizable Earth. The book draws on Asaro's experience as a ballet dancer to present a realistic portrait of a dancer's life, without ever becoming weighed down by the details of individual dance steps or procedures. Similarly, just the right level of detail is given about Moroccan culture and architecture, rather than turning into a lecture on Islam or Moroccan history. The level of detail provided for the computer segments suffers slightly from the fast pace of change in that field, but once the basics are covered, Asaro dips into the more advanced AI concepts with the same light finesse she gave ballet and Moroccan culture.Personally, I found the AI concepts riveting and thoroughly engrossing. The science is explained clearly, but the details can be passed over as more colorful phrases in a foreign language, without impacting the romantic suspense that is the heart of the story. Most authors would be satisfied with a single rich backdrop, or one weighty set of issues. Not Asaro. It's a tribute to her storytelling skills that she manages to seamlessly weave together three elaborately detailed settings (the world of ballet, Morocco, and cyberspace) and two sets of neatly meshing yet distinct issues (the clash of cultures and religions, and the nature of thought and spirit). Each reader will probably find a different mix of setting and issues of primary interest. But no matter what your background, this book will give you something to think about, and people for which to care.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Reader from Texas By A Customer A terrific read, in a very different way than her "Skolian Saga" books. The characters were well-defined and real. The author did her homework on Islam and AI. In particular, she accurately conveyed a sense of how some Muslims practice Islam without resorting to the usual stereotypes, an approach I found most refreshing.

However, the lazy formatters didn't bother to set the poems in "poetic" style. They're just glommed together in paragraphs, making the poems very hard to enjoy.I guess this is what you should expect with "free" Kindle books. Someone at Amazon should run quality control on anything that's posted for downloading.

Rebirth of the Salesman: The World of Sales is Evolving. Are You?, by Cian McLoughlin

From the Author I wrote Rebirth of the Salesman with two types of readers in mind. The first are senior sales leaders looking for new ideas or to validate their own theories about sales success and their customers' decision making criteria. I also wrote it for sales professionals and business people keen to develop their skills, build their careers and better anticipate the wants and needs of their customers. I have a particular affinity with young salespeople carving out their niche in what can be a demanding and occasionally cut-throat area of business. I've trained and mentored thousands of younger salespeople in recent years and I have always tried to instill in them the creativity and endless possibilities of our profession, plus an understanding of the positive impact we can have on the businesses we sell to on a daily basis. My goals in writing this book are to:

  • help you to recognize how the sales industry is evolving and make sure you have a strategy to evolve right along with it
  • provide specific, actionable and hopefully engaging insights that will allow you to focus on key skills or personal development opportunities, to help lift your game
  • reinvigorate those of you who have been ploughing a lonely furrow for many years now and may have begun to lose sight of the purpose and clarity you once had about your chosen profession, and
  • help you to seek out the treasure trove of valuable insights and nuggets of customer gold, which is sitting waiting to be mined just below the surface of the deals you work on every day.
At its simplest, I wrote Rebirth of the Salesman as a guide book for sales and business people everywhere, curious to know more about what's really happening in the mind of their buyers and to get a peek behind the curtain of their customers' decision-making processes. Ultimately, Rebirth of the Salesman was written to get to the heart of one central question: As sales professionals, why do we win and lose, and what can we really do about it?

About the Author Cian McLoughlin is the founder and CEO of Trinity Perspectives, a sales training and advisory firm that specializes in helping companies better understand why they are winning and losing the deals they pitch for. With Fortune 500 clients across the world, Cian has trained and developed salespeople from Brisbane to Bangkok, Christchurch to Cape Town and everywhere in between.A regular sales and marketing commentator in the mainstream media, Cian is a passionate proponent of an ethical, honest and authentic approach to sales.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Definitely worth reading. A stand-out book. By Kristin Zhivago This is one great book. It's a fast, engaging read. What I liked best was how Cian keeps answering the "Why?" question - something I've come to appreciate the longer I'm in business.Cian brings it all down to a very personal and humble level - to the point where it's easy to relate - but his courage to keep pressing until he answers the "Why" question separates the observer from the winner. Once I started reading, it was tough to put down - which is pretty rare for most business books. He alternates deftly between the hands-on, experience-driven observations, and the more strategic, management-oriented perspective. There is great wisdom here for the salesperson just starting out and trying to figure out what matters; a keen reminder of what we can all be doing better, for more seasoned professionals; and a frank management perspective on how sales has been strategically affected by customer buying patters in the cloud era we're living in.I highly recommend this book. Well worth the read. Bravo.

There are some very simple, but very powerful concepts which can be life changing for anyone who has anything to do with sales. I don't have a traditional sales role, but it is a key part of what I do and since reading this I'm looking at how I can relate to my clients and potential clients (and even the ones I missed out on) in a different way, which adds to our relationship and helps understand how I can be of more value to my clients in the future. Easy read and very well written.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Had a wonderful trip to Arizona two months ago By Amy Lamborn I have come to rely on Eyewitness guides every time I go on a trip. They are colorful, keep your attention, and very often mention special, little-known places of interest that would be worth a stop. Had a wonderful trip to Arizona two months ago. The guide provides lots of information to help get you psyched for your trip!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Pretty pictures, but low on details. By Joanne Promislow Might be good for choosing broadly what you want to do, but not for the actual planning of what you decide on. For example, you may look at the lovely pictures of the slot canyons and decide you want to tour one, but then there is no information on the differences between upper and lower antelope canyon, which tour guide groups are recommended (you have to have a guide to visit the slot canyons), or how to contact them. While we were in Arizona, I found myself using the guide book I got from AAA much more frequently to get the practical details we needed. Lovely pictures though, and if your primary focus is the Grand Canyon, it seemed to have more details on that.

It is strange, fun, yet there are depressing confusing moments too. It is worth the low price for such a thought prevoking work. Its been a couple days since i finished it and im still considering the ending.

If you are a fan of Thorogood's Jack Hamma stories then give this a go, he has removed the action from those books and left you with the "reluctant?" romance and humour. I enjoyed the book, quite good fun and some interesting characters, not sure about Texas though, she was a tad annoying. Gave the book for stars, certainly deserves it for being the only book I've read that mentions good old corned beef hash, used to love that when I were a scout.Part of a series of books, looking forward to the next release.

Inside the mind of a young naive man is not where I would normally like to be but he's so engaging, direct and witty that it's so fun. You know he'll get into trouble but it's fascinating to find out exactly how and what happens next. Even though the hero's brain is in his trousers he has plenty left to work the narration engine and turns out to be not so naïve after all. And it's all quite polite.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Good Recipe By Amazon Customer I enjoyed this episodic romp through Europe and other foreign places, as our hero takes a gap-year to find himself and his true love. Along the way he finds a lot of other quirky characters and manages to avoid permanent damage. AE Thorogood writes funny, snappy dialogue with enough pithy description to ensure we can clearly see where the action is taking place.

With A Warrior's Path, Davis Ashura introduced fans to Arisa, an ancient world rich with history and myth where humanity struggles to survive the never-ending battle with the demon Suwraith and her hordes of Chimeras. Now Ashura's best-selling epic continues with A Warrior's Knowledge.

Rukh Shektan and Jessira Grey struggle to reach the OutCaste city of Stronghold before winter's snow bars all passages. Their travels test Rukh's will and hope as Chimeras hound their footsteps, but the most difficult challenge proves to be Stronghold itself. The city is not as Jessira described.

Rector Bryce and Mira Terrell form a reluctant alliance. Rector is forced to do the bidding of Dar'El Shektan - the man he betrayed - and works with Mira. They seek a means to bring down House Shektan's most bitter rival, Hal'El Wrestiva, the man responsible for Rukh's banishment. Meanwhile, Bree and Jaresh continue their search for the Sil Lor Kum. Danger lurks, and the withering knife murders continue as Hal'El Wrestiva, the SuDin of the Sil Lor Kum, furthers his own intentions.

And high in the heavens and watching over the world is Suwraith. Her clouded mind is clear for the first time in millennia, and she makes her own plans. The sorrow bringer has learned of Stronghold's existence.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A well worthwhile sequel By Michael A Warrior's Knowledge, the second book of The Castes & the OutCastes by Davis Ashura, is a worthy follow-up to that unique original. It has all of the things I enjoyed most about A Warrior's Path: well-developed characters with depth and consistency, lavish descriptions of a truly unique new fantasy world (Arisa), action, discovery, and a well-developed magic system that doesn't overwhelm the story. This is not a stand-alone novel; it picks up where the first left off, and sets the stage for the third and final book; it even has references to the short-story collection Tales of Arisa as Easter eggs for fans of this author. This book didn't have as many plot twists as the first book, but there were some satisfying and some tantalizing revelations, and the story advanced at a good pace. I eagerly await the final volume, and I highly recommend this book along with the first in the series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A warriors knowledge By jeremy This is written as well as book one. Waiting for book 3. I like the authors style and how he formed the culture. Similar to Indian culture. But honestly I wanted to strangle some of these characters do to their prejudice. It says something when an author can make you want to punch a written character. I'm laughing at myself, but it's true. Anyway I'm not one to ruin a story by telling you all the details. I can just say this was a refreshing, New world, well thought out and most enjoyable read.Thank you David

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. More Sleepless Nights! By Neal This is another page turner by an author I'll be following in the future. The snapshots we get into the minds of the various characters, on both sides of this evolving story, elicit compassion even for (some of) the antagonists. This is a fun read, just like Ashura's first book, and like that one, I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy.

The Black Dog of Depression has descended over the adults of Dublin. Uncles are losing their businesses, dads won’t get out of bed, mothers no longer smile at their children. Siblings Raymond and Gloria have had enough and set out one night with one goal in mind: to stop the Black Dog, whatever it takes. In a chase through the streets and parks and beaches of Dublin, the children run after the Black Dog, and soon dozens, then hundreds, then thousands of kids join in their fight. They discover they have one weapon against the Black Dog. The weapon is a word: “brilliant.” Illustrated throughout by a bright new talent and told through the masterful dialogue for which the acclaimed Roddy Doyle is known, Brilliant is a very special book with a storybook feel.

Brilliant, by Roddy Doyle

From School Library Journal Gr 5–8—The Black Dog of Depression has arrived in Dublin, bringing with him a sense of despair that seems to affect many of the adults in the city. When the Dog's influence reaches their home, causing their uncle to lose his business, Gloria and Raymond (at the insistence of their eccentric grandmother) begin chasing the Dog through the streets. As more and more children join them on the chase, Raymond and Gloria wonder how they are going to defeat an antagonist that they sometimes can't even see. When they discover an unlikely weapon against the beast, they push back against his influence and discover something simply brilliant. The story itself is incredibly charming and the characters delightful. Readers will relate to Gloria and Raymond and their desire to understand and help the adults in their lives. VERDICT Doyle has crafted a clever and accessible novel that will spark conversation about both economic and emotional depression.—Wayne R. Cherry, Jr., First Baptist Academy Library, Houston, TX

Review "Hopeful and surprisingly exhilarating." (Kirkus Reviews)"Doyle fills the kids’ adventure with fun." (Publishers Weekly)

Clever, Fun with a Great Message By Maxine (Booklover Catlady) Brilliant is a funny yet meaningful book for middle grade readers tackling the subject of depression in a very clever way.The Black Dog of depression had invaded the city of Dublin. No humans noticed. But the animals did. The city's pets tried to warn their owners but the humans weren't listening. A bark was a bark, and a mew was just a mew. When Uncle Ben comes to live with Gloria & Raymond and their family after his business fails and he can't afford to pay the mortgage anymore, the children realise that it's the Black Dog that is to blame for their Uncle's situation. There are some very clever lines in this book, some profound, others very funny, I did laugh out loud a few times and smiled a lot reading this delightful book.Gloria & Raymond decide to hunt down the Black Dog along with many more of Dublin's children, so a night adventure begins seeking the elusive Black Dog with the help of talking animals and a whole lot of enthusiasm. They are determined to get rid of the Black Dog once and for all.'Brilliant' was a brilliant word. It lit everything around it. It was hard to see the gloom when the word was constantly bursting all over the city, like a firework display that never ended. This is a very readable book for children, and would create a great opportunity to talk about the subject of depression. It's a lot of fun along the way. Does it have a happy ending? Do the children find, and defeat the Black Dog of Dublin? You will just have to read to find out.BRILLIANT!

Something fantastic for all ages By Cecelia Larsen One of my favorite things in books as I’ve grown older is when a city (or urban landscape) is so deeply a part of the story and atmosphere that it becomes a character in its own right. When I was a kid, not so much. Then I mostly cared about fantasy landscapes, about going through the wardrobe into somewhere different, with a MAP! (and dragons, if at all possible). Roddy Doyle’s depiction of Dublin in Brilliant, is the happy medium between those two. Readers can hear the life of the city, feel it, see it in the eyes of his characters. At the same time, it’s not overpowering. Character voices (including that of a meerkat named Kevin) steal the spotlight in this charming, modern middle grade fantasy.Gloria and her older brother Raymond (Rayzer for short) are mostly happy, even when they’re squabbling. They know life in Dublin has changed, but they don’t know what caused it. When their Uncle Ben comes to live with the family, they are determined to learn why, even as they enjoy his presence. On one eventful night, they and the other children of Dublin run the town, from the zoo to the water – meeting talking animals, learning the power of language, and chasing the specter of an enormous black dog. When I finished this book, I couldn't help but grin at the joy it brought me and the laughter and tears it provoked. In that moment I didn't care who it was written for, I just knew that it had been a good read. Not five minutes later, I was deep in conversation with two wonderful fellow bloggers, and they lamented a new rash of middle grade fiction that seems to be written "for adults" rather than children.I let that digest a bit, and by the end of the night I was afraid that my glorious experience with Brilliant meant that it was indeed "one of those" books. I've been thinking about it ever since, actually. And here's what I've decided: 1) Yes, the story has a "moral" and at times reads a bit like a fable about how children can cure the ills of the world (and that's not a message I endorse 110% but we'll leave it for now). 2) It will appeal equally to adults AND children. For *very* different reasons. What adults will like: The book's accessible treatment of depression, the fantastic writing (especially the dialogue - which Doyle is really a master of), the positive and hopeful themes, and the romp through Dublin (an expert tour if there ever was one). What kids will like: The sibling hijinks, the talking animals, forbidden nighttime adventures, the quest to do the right thing, jokes, and victory at the end. The book might not work for every reader, but there's something in it for readers of all ages.Listen, if you haven't read Roddy Doyle yet, do. He writes hilarious, beautiful, tragic, wonderful stuff. You can feel Ireland in every page, and his books for young readers have hints of the fantastic throughout. Also: Emily Hughes’ illustrations are an A+ addition to the book.Recommended for: all ages fans of stories about family and doing the right thing, for anyone looking for a great read aloud pick for the 7-10 year old set, and fans of Lauren Oliver's Liesl & Po.

A fun tale about adults in trouble and the kids who will do anything to save them By Wayne A McCoy 'Brilliant' by Roddy Doyle and illustrated by Emily Hughes is actually tied in to Dublin's Saint Patrick's Day parade. Back in 2011, Roddy Doyle was asked to write a short story and each chapter would tell a story of the float that people were seeing.Raymond and Gloria like to sneak down and listen to what their mother and father are talking about. It's a fun game that the adults are in on. Ever since Uncle Ben came to live with them, the growups don't talk out loud at night, and when the kids sneak down, the adults don't notice. It turns out Uncle Ben has some problems and it seems to be even something affecting the entire city. There is a Black Dog of depression that has stolen the city's funny bone. The kids decide to chase down this black dog and recover the city's laughter. Along the way they are joined by all kinds of other kids who have poignant stories of the sad grownups in their lives. There are other surprises, but I'll leave those for the reader to discover. My review copy had rough drawings, but I've since seen the finished ones and they are very nice. The story tackles a serious subject but in a kid-friendly way. There is plenty of warmth along the way, including one of Raymond and Gloria's friends who thinks he's a vampire. It's a really lovely story.I received a review copy of this ebook from ABRAMS Kids, Amulet Books, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

One of the most successful parts has to be the integration of dark and light into the same story. The bad guys are cruel and heartless and the system of government they promote is sinister and suffocating. Things look hopeless, and would be except for the fact that Curio comes along. He sets into motion, through his endless questioning and heart of faith, a series of events that spur others on to deeds of courage and defiance. This is my favorite kind of story, one that presents the evil in the world as real and frightening, but delivers hope and faith enough to stand up to it. It takes a great author to be able to do both.

The characters are engaging and the plot moves at a great pace. I've read lots of YA and adult fiction through the years, and I can see that Curio has all the hallmarks of a book that I will read and re-read for years to come. This is destined to become a classic.

A Supernatural Adventure Novel By Mike Carter Curio will captivate your imagination, lead you into places you do not expect, and reveal an adventure that is certain to become a classic. I highly recommend this book to everyone, young and old, who is curious about the supernatural realm–a topic that is more prevalent in today's culture than ever before.
