By Caterina This book is part of The Woodland Creek series, a collection of 30 stand-alone stories by 30 different authors, all revolving around the small town of Woodland Creek. This particular story is about Cassie - or, as her mother used to call her, Cassidy - who found out she might just be turning into a demon on her 25th birthday! When she receives a strange book that is supposed to be sent by her long-dead mother, strange things start to happen. All the signs point her towards the direction of Woodland Creek, the place where she grew up before all the misfortunes and tragedies of her life took place and led her to leave the town! When she arrives to Woodland Creek she is fairly happy to find there her childhood friend, Josh, whom she might actually feel an attraction about. And, then her best friend from all those years back, Jenn, also makes her appearance. And, all hell breaks loose... Literally! This story was quite quick-paced, with lots of events taking place, both mysterious and adventurous! The heroine was quite strong-willed, and I just loved her and her slowly growing horns! Her romantic interest, Josh was also quite lovable, and I felt greatly fond of him! Her rival was also strong, something that only added more to the story! The way the author wrote, I was able to completely grasp the mood of the story, and the tragedies the heroine has survived! I loved all the flashbacks, and the letters from Cassie's long-lost mother were just awesome, perky and straight to the point!

The Good Girl's Guide to Being a Demon By Jenny This is my first read by April Aasheim - I look forward to more by the author.Cassis Martin - has been running from life, her mother died when she was young, and her Dad and brother died suddenly years later. She has been haunted by dreams for years - shadow people stalking her, she doesn't sleep much because of the dreams. She left the town she grew up in and ran away, and has been under a doctors care. The Phychiastris suggest she confront her demons (just wait) and go home. On her 21st birthday she makes the decision and goes home. Cassie runs into the guy she had a crush on for years and sparks start to fly. Then another friend shows up and interferes with what she and Josh were starting.Demon's is a refreshing switch on Angel's and Demon's dark and light. Ms. Aasheim will keep you engaged and turning pages to see who is evil and who is the savior of the story. Her characters are strong and well developed. If you are looking for a great paranormal romance that is a bit different then I highly recommend this one. Well done.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Crazy Fun By Evampire Get ready to have fun with drawing. This kit features fun, crazy characters…animals, aliens and robots that anyone would love to draw and I had lots of fun doing so. The book provides a guide for drawing different shapes of eyes, noses and mouths and a reference guide of how different expressions look and then you have the characters themselves which provide an overall finished copy and then breaks each one down into simple shapes where you then add more shapes in different places and add a few lines or erase a few lines and you have a finished picture in a few easy steps. The steps are numbered, easy to follow and best of all there is no wrong way to draw these zany characters as they are all about being fun which encourages imagination as well as ensuring that no one gets discouraged. The kit provides everything needed to get started on a cool and fantastic drawing experience; pencil, paper, color pencils, markers, eraser, some cool stickers of the characters and forty colorful pages of zany cartoon fun.The kit is designed for children but I found that it I had lots of fun as well and let me tell you that I can’t draw anything at all and I was able to draw some pretty funny pictures with these characters and the more I drew them the more confident I became and then I set about changing a few things here and there and letting my imagination run wild. Then my granddaughter got in on the action and she had so much fun she took the kit away from me, but she does draw me some amusing pictures in return. So if you are looking for an entertaining way to encourage a child or even yourself to use your imagination, then this is a fun way to do so and the kit keeps everything together in a magnetically sealed book which keeps losses and clutter to a minimum.

It comes with a 40 page drawing book, markers, sticker, colored pencils, paper, and more all in one place. This is one of my favorite gifts to give because I have always given the children in my life books BUT I love also fostering their creative nature. This is the best of both worlds. They learn to draw head shapes, expressions and more in an easy step by step process! The book gives the idea of a fun, whimsical creature and the steps to draw it. The get an art lesson and get to be creative too! LOVE IT!PLUS it all comes in a neat, magnetic box that keeps everything contained.Great Gift Idea!

By Hello Happy We have some little artists in our home, and I want to encourage that, but worry that they won’t be able to transition from their doodles to serious artwork in the future. When I was young and trying to draw, I didn’t understand that most artists draw out the basic shapes and then fill in the details. This book and kit comes with an art set, and magnetic closing case. I especially like how the book shows how to draw simple cartoon-ish shapes, and then fill them out into a cute character. I think it’s a good skill for kids to learn while young, plus they are having a lot of fun making their own characters.

We should all be so pissed at the Church of America that we’re willing to break our hands in the metaphorical punching of its metaphorical face.”  —Harpreet Janda, fugitive     The predicted Rapture by Pastor Frick’s Church of America has come and gone, and three thousand Believers are now missing or dead. Seventeen-year-old Vivian Apple and her best friend, Harpreet, are revolutionaries, determined to expose the Church’s diabolical power grab . . . and to locate Viv’s missing heartthrob, Peter Ivey. Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle, by Katie Coyle

From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—With the rapture predicted by the Church of America having passed, Vivian and Harpreet are two of the few who know the truth: that the rapture was staged and the believers who were chosen are either missing or dead. Can they stop Pastor Frick and the church's mad grab for power and control over society? Or will this rapture really be the beginning of the end. Vivian and Harpreet are idealistic teens who will stop at nothing to reveal the truth in this sequel to Vivian Apple at the End of the World (HMH, 2015). The characters are well rounded and believable and represent multiple personalities and ideologies. The plot is fast paced but difficult to follow for newcomers to the series. Religion—the lack of faith or unwavering belief in it—is a central component to the story line. Readers will be questioning their own belief systems and asking themselves just how far they would go to uncover the truth. Fans of the first volume will want to read this thought-provoking continuation. VERDICT A great addition to YA collections.—Elizabeth Speer, Weatherford College, Weatherford, TX

Review "Like its prequel, Katie Coyle's ostensibly YA novel Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle examines pretty heavy themes — spirituality, faith, love, and how doing the right thing can be really hard, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it."—Cosmopolitan “An utterly chilling look at what happens when a dying world so desperately wants to believe in anything to survive.”—MTV.com "The characters are well rounded and believable and represent multiple personalities and ideologies...Readers will be questioning their own belief systems and asking themselves just how far they would go to uncover the truth."—School Library Journal "Coyle adeptly handles an exceptionally multifaceted plot, easily seguing from snarky social criticism to heart-pounding action to stomach-fluttering romance, creating a breathless whirlwind that keeps the pages fying until the very end. A distinctive, complex, and thoughtful page-turner certain to leave readers clamoring for more."—Kirkus "Unpredictable and unique, this book wil leave readers in awe, aspiring to be as brave and graceful as Vivian Apple herself."—VOYA, Teen Reviewer "Nonstop twists and breathless action flirt with crossing the line into absurdity, but that's just part of this sequel's appeal. Fans shouldn't hesitate to continue Viv's quest along with her, and they'll be satisfied with how her mission to save humanity from fear-fueled delusion plays out."—Horn Book Magazine "As before, Coyle takes an intriguing premise, covers it with questions of faith and loyalty, adds a gallon of cynicism, and keeps it moving...Along with the questions about religion and consumerism that are in the forefront of the girls' quest, tucked away are important insights about human nature."—Booklist * "Coyle dials back the urgency of her debut, adopting a more languid pace while still delivering plenty of action...As Vivian and harp attempt to solve the mystery of the faked Rapture in an effort to expose the Church as a fraud, Coyle again offers searing commentary on present-day religiosity and consumerism."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Bristol Vivian Apple and her friend Harp are currently on the run, after confronting the heads of the charismatic Church of America that has a stranglehold on every aspect of American life in this dystopian novel. Since they've lost their car, most of their possessions and Vivian has sprained her hand, they seek refuge in San Francisco with Vivian's half-sister, Winnie, who has joined a radical militia movement to take down the Church, as well. The movement is headed by Amanda, a tech whiz who is now paralyzed from the waist down due to the Church, and who is eager to take violent revenge. The girls' parents are either dead or missing in action, so there's no help to be found there. Though Vivian and Harp are somewhat grudgingly allowed to stay with the rebels, they decide to take action independently: mainly sneaking into the Church compound to see Vivian's boyfriend, now a charismatic spokesman for the enemy and their friend, Dylan, the former boyfriend of Harp's brother, who's also turned pro-Church. The girls decide to publicize their knowledge via blog, and also hope to derail the rebels' plans to bomb the compound, but will they be able to do so before the apocalypse? The new reader is introduced to a dizzying array of plots and subplots about the upcoming Rapture and the New Orphans, Magdelening, the Angels, the New Messiah and for all I know, the man from Mars who likes eating cars because I stopped trying to keep up with everything that was already established in the first book. If you've already read the prequel, however, this won't faze you. However, there is minimal character development of both the primary and secondary characters in this one. Many new characters are introduced, several of which I would have liked to meet in more detail. The action seemed to follow a cycle of confront/back off/make out/escape. The subject of religious extremism would seem to be an easy one to parody, but there isn't much humor to be found here. This is the second book in a series, though, so perhaps things will change in the next one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Sequel That Lives Up to the First Book By Erin (The Hardcover Lover) FTC Disclaimer: I received a free galley (ARC) of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my opinion in any way.Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle picks up right where Vivian Apple at the End of the World left off. Viv and Harp are now in San Fransisco, Viv has met her older-half sister, and she's just realized that her mother in in fact, alive. It's a lot for a seventeen-year-old to handle, but what happens next really messes with Viv and Harp. The two teenagers aren't just teenage runaways now; they are considered fugitives, and the Church will stop at nothing to find them.So does Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle live up to Vivian Apple at the End of the World? I'd say yes! It's just as fresh and strange as the first book because The Church of America is still going strong, and it's up to Viv and Harp to stop them. There's a little bit of everything in this book - flirting, romance, familial bonds, crisis, anarchy, and death. There's also a lot of action in this book, and I could see readers of series like Veronica Roth's Divergent devouring it.Yes! Some of your favorite characters from the first book are back. And some of your least favorite characters from the first book are back, but Coyle also introduces readers to a lot of new characters in Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle. There are two new groups readers will be meeting during this book, and yes... a lot of new names! I won't lie to you and say that I was able to remember all of them, but for the most part, Coyle does a good job at keeping all of the new and old characters in the book and updating readers on the events going on with them while Viv and Harp come up with a plan to take down the Church of America. So if you're looking for something different to read this fall, reach for Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle or Vivian Apple Versus America if you're in the UK. It's definitely not a book I would have read on my own if it weren't for receiving an ARC of the first book, but its action-packed sequences and real human emotions had me hooked. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in learning about the histories of religions or fans of science fiction and dystopian novels.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Solid Follow Up By OutlawPoet First of all, I really think you need to read the first book before this one. If you haven't, you might find yourself lost. Just about all the world building was done in book one. Now, this is a nice follow up to the first book. We rejoin all our favorite characters and add a couple not-so-favorites into the mix. Note that this one isn't so much about the rapture. It's more about getting the truth out there. There's some danger, a little mystery, and a little more from the Book of Frick. For me, Vivian wasn't very exciting in this one. She was overshadowed by her best friend Harp. I found I wanted a lot more Harp and a lot less Vivian. But over all, it was an entertaining book. Just missing a little oomph!(By the way, there's a great tease about an astronomical anomaly that is NEVER explored. It's a shame because it would have been an exciting thread to follow. Maybe in another book?)

The Perfect Step-by-Step Manual On Training/Living in Thailand By C Huynh This is the ultimate resource for anyone wanting to train, or even just travel, to Thailand. The author thoroughly explains what sets Thailand apart from all the other popular training destinations. Then he explains how to make it all possible. Reading this book is like having an inspirational and motivational conversation with a friend, professional fighter, coach, manager, travel agent, and Thai local, all-in-one. There is no other resource available that even comes close to the knowledge Kesler provides.Kesler goes in depth on which cities are best for training, what the top gyms are, where to eat, Thai culture, how not to be taken advantage of, etc. More importantly, he outlines the financials of it all. He details the avenues available to finance your stay, as well as documents his every expense and budget.Like I said before, there's just no other resource that can touch the breadth and depth of knowledge you'll find in this book!

Instructions are clear and easy to follow and after reading the introduction chapters you just want to start training. What I personally liked was that this book is not all about the physical training, but it is also going into detail about the mindset you have to be in when you want to start your Muay Thai training. It really makes you understand where you have to stand to take on this sport, if it's for your benefit and in your own home only or if you want to become a professional fighter.Other than the training plans and exercises, this book is also filled with lots of interesting facts about the sport.Had a great time with this book.

Great book, I recommend it as a fighter myself By Michael H Having lived in Thailand for the last 8 years and training Muay Thai I can relate to many aspects of the book. With myself a digital nomad I know how cheap and easy it is to live here while earning a western wage.Brandon gives great detail in most aspects of his writing, letting you know that you can stay here long term, you just have to plan it right. I ave been to China and made some decent money so everything is possible. As a fighter myself Thailand is the best place to come to learn muay thai at the best rates for anywhere in the world.

According to them it is exciting, funny, and the best Minecraft adventure story they’ve read. They can’t wait for me to download the other titles in the series. For my youngest, normally a reluctant reader, I finally have a series she can’t wait to read more of. This might be the series to finally get her reading. Thank you!

By claire Having found his soul mate, half-shifter Sin wanted to protect her - even from himself, so refused to mate with her - even though it was the only thing he could think of......The night he couldn't hold back any more.......his brother -well, half brother - decided to pay him a visit.....they fought. He was distracted, and his brother killed his soul mate...ingesting her soul and her light. Sin was broken. He vowed to spend the rest of his life tracking him until he could finally kill him and put his soul mates soul at rest.But....things aren't that clear. His brother Xander has stumbled upon an ancient spell that if completed would render him immortal. And hes nearly finished. Hes missing one last piece. Finally catching up with him, Sin rescues a woman, Emma that he was about to feast on, and in a split moment decision chose to save her, rather than give chase to Xander.Emma is immediately struck by his extreme...there's no other way to put this...hotness. And even Sin cannot deny that there is something about her that is strangely calling to him.We are given both Emma and Sin's views in this book - i liked that, but at the same time, you're sitting very frustrated that you cant scream at them what they both need to hear!Emma is used to being alone, and Sin is incredibly hot and very rude and demanding when he declares she is - no argument - going to help him kill Xander because he saved her. He clearly states that he has no interest in her. At all. None. Even if his body is telling him different. Emma feels it, but plays him at his own game.....But will she push too hard? Will she realise what she actually is? Why she has these terrifying nightmares? What her role in Sins life actually is......Sin is so fixated on saving his loves soul, and destroying his full blooded brother, does he miss whats right in front of him? Whats alive and right there? What hes been searching for, and had been destined for all this time? There are two ways this could end.....each way someone close to Sin is going to die......each way someone close to sin will have their soul set free....But whose....?Another great read from Woodland Creek. This one is sizzlingly hot, great characters and a storyline with a slight twist! Good read!*received a copy for an honest review*

Done!"Woodland Creek.Emma hates everything about this town. The whole reason for her being there and she just wants to get out of there as soon as she possibly can. There's plenty going on in this town than Emma knows but she's about to find out.Roxsin is in this town for one reason and one reason only;Revenge. He is willing to sacrifice ANYTHING to get the revenge he's chased for long. When he comes to Woodland Creek he gets more than revenge.Emma was tired with the way her life was and even a little broken from what had got her to this point. But I loved her! She's sassy and freaking hilarious. When she's thrust into the paranormal world she's not in full denial and she's not totally accepting it either which brings her sass and humor out in full force and is a great addition to the story."Right, a shifter. And I'm princess f-ing Leia. I need more specifics here pal."Oh, Sin. Protective and loyal But it was a bit of a jerk move when he's determined to hold onto his old feelings and trying to deny the feelings he had in the present when his actions were clearly different but I loved him so much so this didn't turn me against him, I just was annoyed at him for a bit. He may have been moody but damn was he alpha and sexy as eff! And he stays loyal to the end and when he comes to his senses it's all forgiven!"...I've returned to claim what's mine," he growls "And since I know there is no way you will be denying me, that means I'm here to stay, ... And let me warn you, Emma, if you try to deny me, I will only remind you how you are already mine and that decision has already been made. You're mine, Emma."When we start the story, it's building up to a moment from the get go so there's not angst. It's not over the top or silly which is always a plus for me. There's great banter and sexy between them. It was a great story and melded altogether brilliantly. Right now Paranormal is what I read the most but Emma's twist isn't something I've read before and I loved it! It literally made my eyes bulge out of my head! so freaking good! I loved it and I hope J.D. writes more paranormal in the future! :-)Oh and I've got to mention the wizard, he was hilarious and made me giggle! Especially at the end!

That’s until she meets a man By Kathleen Rivest She learned how it felt to be abandoned. He lives with the suffering of death. Together will they learn what new beginnings mean?Emma Waters is no stranger to a world of abandonment.Growing up on the wrong side of the Foster care system taught her to count on a life without love. As their worlds collide and secrets of a world Emma never could imagine existed, they must decide if redemption is worth the price of revenge and sacrifice. (Amazon blurb)There has always been two sides to every child’s life and some are difficult to bear, incredibly difficult to listen, while others have had the chance to know what family and love mean and the influence it has on them. Emma was the unlucky child, one that grew to know coldness, darkness and abandonment, but more so that love only brings you pain and heartache. Roxsin has known love, the tender touch of a hand on the cheek and eyes that sparkle when the other walks into a room, but it was cruelly ripped out of his hands by jealousy and envy. There is no question in my mind why J.D. Hollyfield has managed to fully captivate my attention from beginning to end. Not only do we return to Woodland Creek, the same mysterious town we found ourselves in Tia Louise’s One Insatiable, but when shifters and attraction collide, I simply can’t stop myself from reading cover to cover. As a standalone in a boxed set of 30 novels with 30 novels from the Woodland Creek series, J.D. Hollyfield’s Sinful Instincts is absolutely worth the read..**Received a copy in exchange for an honest review. Read and reviewed by Kathleen for Alpha Book Club**

Meet the new UNIT By Adam Graham, Superhero and Detective Fiction Author Big Finish brings the New Series version of UNIT from the new TV show to audio as they face off against the Nestene consciousness and the Autons. The set does a great job updating the Nestene's invasion plans for the twenty-first Century. It centers around 3D Printers and the Nestenes use a wireless network and all the touches of our modern life. The effect is to make the Autons to seem far more real as menacing in our modern world which gives it a creepy feel. The box set is an action showcase, with a very strong second part and the fourth part being a showcase of excitement and superb twists. The final hour is really just wonderful. On the downside, I'll admit that were a few moments that dragged, particularly in Part 3. Also, unlike in other Spin off series, Characterization was fairly weak. We know the most about Osgood and Kate, and very little about them, and we know even less about the team. However, I think this first set serves to introduce the series, so future sets may improve on that point. Overall, this is a very strong start for Big Finish and New Who.

Franklin Hurley, Commander of the U.S.S. Kidd, woke up on an island in the mid-Atlantic not knowing how or why he was there. He and what was left of his crews regrouped and then faced with a series of unexpected events, the most bizarre being an encounter with a pirate ship from the past. As the waves beated against the white sand of this new and mysterious place, Franklin determined that he would stop at nothing to get his men home. With answers scarce and his crews on the brink of mutiny, Franklin must find answers. The clock was ticking as the Commander and the crews of U.S.S. Kidd found themselves pitted against both the pirates and the royal army, while at the same time searching for the way back home. And in order to achieve that, hard choices must be made, loyalties and courages will be tested, alliances will be made, and all will be put on the line. And the final question is... Can they make it in time?

Winn This is such a great series, and will appeal to a lot of readers. The author has taken the story of soul collection to a new level by giving readers the character of Jack. He is a bit of a bumbler at this new job he was given and that is highly understandable if you think about it. I love the story line and I have thoroughly enjoyed Paul B. Kohler's writing and innovation in this incredible series. Book 5 gives readers a hard look at life and death and is emotionally touching with the collection that has to be made this time.

I am looking forward further development of the Jack character in future series. It is after a fantasy storyline but it has been a series that has been well developed and holds my interest most of the time in each story. Some readers may not like the concept but as I said - it is 'my cup of tea'.

Another appearance by the antagonist, and we learn a little about him, but it only leaves you wanting to know more. So what will happen next is anyone's guess, but I can't wait to find out!

Put these Dragons in your Library By Amazon Customer From the Dragon Lord's Library, the first volume, is a good collection of stories about dragons, whether as main feature or as the antagonist to a human. There are several EXCELLENT stories with unusual twists on presenting dragons like "Dragonfly Shadow", a Weird Western by J. Patrick, Allen, or "Tipping the Scales" by Dorian Graves, which is a hilarious treatment of Dragon meets The Devil Wears Prada with a faithful if overworked human in the middle. Other excellent stories include "The Dragon, Fly" by Jilly Paddock, "The Call of Gold" by Claire Davon, and "The Dragon's Clause" by Kelly A. Harmon. The book is worth acquiring for your personal library.

Well worth the 4$. Unique ideas and interpretations of the word "dragon". Don't expect every story to be game of thrones, or the hobbit!

Ebook PDF The Critical Nexus: Tone-System, Mode, and Notation in Early Medieval Music (AMS Studies in Music), by Charles M. Atkinson

The Critical Nexus confronts an important and vexing enigma of early writings on music: why chant, which was understood to be divinely inspired, needed to be altered in order to work within the then-operative modal system. To unravel this mystery, Charles Atkinson creates a broad framework that moves from Greek harmonic theory to the various stages in the transmission of Roman chant, citing numerous music treatises from the sixth to the twelfth century. Out of this examination emerges the central point behind the problem: the tone-system advocated by writers coming from the Greek harmonic tradition was not suited to the notation of chant and that this basic incompatibility led to the creation of new theoretical constructs. By tracing the path of subsequent adaptation at the nexus of tone-system, mode, and notation, Atkinson promises new and far-reaching insights into what mode meant to the medieval musician and how the system responded to its inherent limitations. Through a detailed examination of the major musical treatises from the sixth through the twelfth centuries, this text establishes a central dichotomy between classical harmonic theory and the practices of the Christian church. Atkinson builds the foundation for a broad and original reinterpretation of the modal system and how it relates to melody, grammar, and notation. This book will be of interest to all musicologists, music theorists working on mode, early music specialists, chant scholars, and medievalists interested in music.

The Critical Nexus: Tone-System, Mode, and Notation in Early Medieval Music (AMS Studies in Music), by Charles M. Atkinson

Review "The Critical Nexus is a milestone in every respect, which appeals to specialists and novices alike. It deserves to be ranked among the classic studies on the subject and will be of lasting value to anybody interested in the formation of music thought in the Middle Ages." --Fontes Artis Musicae"The Critical Nexus will become required reading for musicologists, music theorists, and medievalists interested in the reception of ancient texts." --Speculum"A meticulously researched survey of early medieval theory and its application to plainsong, it will form the starting point for future research in the field." --James Grier, Professor of Music History, University of Western Ontario"A comprehensive study, fine-tuning our understanding of the challenges faced by medieval theorists as they adopted terminology and concepts from Antiquity to make sense of the music of their own time - the chant repertory of the Christian church. Professor Atkinson brings a unique perspective to this history of tone-system, mode, and notation through his command of Greek and Latin text sources, combined with his forage into the chant repertory itself. The scholarly community will prize this contribution for years to come." --Dolores Pesce, Professor of Music, Washington University in St. Louis"In this meticulous examination of the texts on music that were the most widely read from the ninth to the eleventh century, Charles Atkinson reveals how medieval theorist musicians reinterpreted the tone systems of ancient Greece and the writings of Latin grammarians to explain and notate the new practice of plainchant. His elegant and remarkably lucid argument is the crowning achievement of decades of scholarship: it not only explains early medieval tonality but resolves the longstanding problem of the derivation of the earliest Carolingian notations. It truly transforms our understanding of medieval music. Every musician and medievalist will benefit from reading it." --Barbara Haggh-Huglo, Professor of Music, University of Maryland, College Park"This important book is of a kind to stimulate one's thoughts about the inherent nature of medieval chant and to provoke discussions about contested issues; above all, however, it presents in al its wealth of detail the evidence for the remarkable story of the earliest developments in the history of Western art music." --Music and Letters"All readers, regardless of their level of specialization, will find their understanding both broadened and deepened. To be sure, this is a work that merits to become a classic, that deserves to be read and reread, studied and discussed among students and scholars time and again, and is therefore highly recommended to all musicologists and libraries." --Notes

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Too technical for whom? By ad modum Ytalicorum I'll leave critical assessments of the book to others better suited to the task (though Atkinson's work is always first rate). As for the assertion that it is too technical, I would point out that it concerns a highly technical subject and is written first and foremost for specialists on medieval music and music theory. This does not preclude non-specialists from making good use of the book, but to give the book a low rating simply because one as a reader does not have sufficient background knowledge to read the book hardly seems fair to the author or to other potential readers of the book. (On those grounds, I would have to give Einstein's _Relativity_ a low rating.)In any event, there are other texts that address the matter of Greek modes of Antiquity, which were effectively moribund centuries before their resurrection by the Carolingians. A more rewarding approach might be to look to sources that treat the Greek modes directly rather than one that explores their rediscovery and refashioning for an entirely unrelated system of music. Clause Palisca's article "Mode" in New Grove is a good choice if you have access to it (though it suffers a bit from an over-reliance on Ptolemy's composite rendering of earlier traditions of modal theory). Also valuable is Tom Mathiesen's article "Greek Music Theory" in The Cambridge History of Western Music Theory (The Cambridge History of Music) (which, coupled with Calvin Bower's subsequent essay, would likely provide sufficient foundation to engage Atkinson's book). Slogging through Boethius's _De musica_ (Fundamentals of Music: Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (Music Theory Translation Series)) might also be a worthwhile exercise, especially since the Carolingians relied heavily on it (though without fully understanding it--but then it's not an easy text). For more extensive treatments, you might consider various texts by Andrew Barker (for example, The Science of Harmonics in Classical Greece) and Martin West (Ancient Greek Music (Clarendon Paperbacks)), as well as Mathiesen's Apollo's Lyre: Greek Music and Music Theory in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, which itself is quite technical and challenging (not to mention controversial) in many respects but is well worth the effort, especially if read as a sort of running commentary alongside some of the more prominent texts he treats (as a stand-alone text, it presents difficulties to the non-specialist, but these can be overcome with patience--still, it's better to have the original sources at hand, and his "Greek Music Theory" essay makes good preparatory reading).

1 of 36 people found the following review helpful. too technical By Ronald W. Johnson I was hoping for a book clarifying the ancient Greek musical modes, but this isn't it; this book assumes an existing expertise in music theory. Also, the illustrations (of tables) are too small to be read on a Kindle-2.
