By Solidstach Solid four stars. The whole series follows a true and tested macho formula: a man builds things, kills people and has sex with women. Simple, yet effective storytelling.Extermination does not stray from this path. I shall now describe in detail what I like and dislike about it:1. The main character builds many awesome magitech devices. Yet this is not taken to its logical extreme, and Daniel does not have eidetic memory when it comes to science he can copy with magic. He may be educated reasonably well, but many esoteric parts of physics and other sciences eludes him. This is good, because making him an omnidisciplinary science savant would be a good reason to dislike the character. The devices themselves are inventive and, at some times, surprising. A plus in my book.2. Previous two books were pretty mediocre when it came to armed conflict (except for a single fight in "Black Coven"). This book shows the author's great imagination when it comes to fantasy battles. There are only a few fights described in the book, but all of them are done very well. Different environments, different enemies and tactics, good improvisations by Daniel and others. All of it makes fights in this book interesting to read and recreate in my head. Nicely done.3. Sex in the Daniel Black series always takes the role of spice: it adds flavor, even if it's barely present. Sex scenes in the book either take the "fade to black" option, or, in one case, a dry, almost technical description of the act itself. This is similar to "Fimbulwinter" and worse than "Black Coven", in my opinion. The only explicit sex scene in this book convenes the sense of lust and need, but it entirely lacks passion. I do not know if this was intended by the author: if yes, then good gods, man, you caught me by surprise. What i like the most about the Daniel Black series is its unpredictability. Despite foreshadowing (yes there was some foreshadowing, a few sentences really) I did not foresee even a small part of the plot of "Extermination". This is rare, since fantasy authors are getting more and more predictable lately. My second most beloved thing about this series is its setting. Its original. Its intriguing. Its bleak and colorful at the same time. Its awesome. My feelings are mixed when it comes to descriptions of interpersonal relations in the book. Like the sex scenes, they are simplified and streamlined for efficiency. For different people this may be either a good, or a bad thing. Finally, I can recommend this book (and series) to anyone seeking something new and exciting in fantasy. While some parts of the narrative may be discouraging, the plot and fight scenes compensate for this very well.

I love the blend of science with magic but not with huge machines that have some magic aspects or pure magic that looks like science. No instead he would use magic and bend it to produce a science effect to achieve the intend result. Also while I like a good story with sex the author didn't write pages and pages of it but show the start and skip to how it end to continue the story. He only wrote one long sex scene but it had a reason behind it for the story. I just wish the author would make Daniel stop long enough for him to enhance his body to the point of his brides. HIs magic is mighty but his body is week! The ending gave him some very big hint in the becoming moreSpolierI hope he can grow some bannas with the one Mara gave him. This way he can become a demi-god

The action sequences were well-developed, and the "slower" scenes filled with character development. Though some emphasis was on developing existing characters, new characters were brought in as the "Black sanctuary" expands.I compliment the author on his esoteric knowledge, and his ability to research and verify. I appreciate that his world(s) building parallels modern physics, which substantiates rather than makes predictable. I hope that the delicate combination of innovation and adventure continues through his next novel(s). All things considered, the number of potential books in this series is almost unlimited.I highly recommend this book, and look forward to future adventures which will no doubt include "Mara", "the apples", and "Erika"...
