From the author of the Light & Shadow Trilogy… Headstrong and defiant, Mahalia spends her days in the gilded cage of a noble’s life, being trained to take her father’s place as leader of their bloodline even as she dreams of running away to join the caravans that travel across the desert. There, she tells herself, she would be free to practice the magic she has always loved. But when an ancient enemy lays waste to the oasis, Mahalia is the only one left to protect her family. As a mysterious wasting sickness preys on her tribe and whispers begin, calling the Yeshuhain demon-touched heretics, Mahalia must choose whether to follow her heart…or become the protector of her people that she was born to be.

Mahalia (The Yeshuhain Chronicles Book 1), by Moira Katson

About the Author Moira Katson has been writing books just about since the time she learned to read. Over the years, everything from napkins to Physics notes to calendar pages has been covered in outlines and story bits; one of her perpetual chores is to collate her day’s notes onto the computer from the 83 scraps of paper she tends to have stuffed in her purse. Mahalia is Moira’s first finished novel, and there is a sequel and a prequel in the works! Other works include her Light & Shadow trilogy. For her other writing projects, she is currently researching Norse history, speculative science, psychology, and Ancient Egypt. Moira lives in the frozen wastes of the American Midwest with her husband and their dog, Buddy. Her non-writing hobbies include cooking, gardening, home renovations, and strong coffee.

I was immediately drawn in by the characters, who all seemed relatable and sympathetic. Mahalia is a young woman about to be married off more or less for political gain, and because it wouldn't be proper for a woman to hold her father's title. She is firmly against this plan, having much more interest in the study of magic - even though she herself is incapable of magic. Those concerns are all put on hold though, when a demon quite literally tears apart her city, killing her parents in the process, and leaves behind an illness that seems to be rooted in magic.I appreciated that even the more antagonistic characters are sympathetic in some way. It's hard to dislike Mahalia's fiancee, even if you're on her side, because he's a genuinely nice guy. I found that far more interesting than if he were a cookie cutter anti-love interest. Nasrin is her fiancee's cousin, a woman warrior type I was drawn to as much as Mahalia herself is.The whole story is set in a desert society, which I found refreshing in a story that would otherwise be pretty straightforward high fantasy. There's magic and demons and political alliances, as well as both familial and romantic entanglements, and if that's your cup of tea (as it is mine) then this is definitely a book worth reading. There are a few different action/mystery plotlines going on, on top of the personal relationships, and I think some of the more intriguing plot lines about the origins of magic are left for the next book. But I was happy with the ending, and I look forward to seeing where the characters end up next.

I wish the sequel to this would come out, as I very much enjoyed the world-building, the mystery, and especially the romance, which grows organically (and is, refreshingly, without fuss and bother about its somewhat un-standard nature). Everything in this book felt fresh and different, without being forced. I want to know what happens next, but I suppose the promise of a few dollars from me won't make it worthwhile for Ms. Katson to take up this series again. Which is a shame, as it's quite good.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Looking ahead... By Andrea L. Anastos This is a charming, lively, and intriguing first novel which introduces some unusual and interesting characters and leaves the reader wondering what will come next. The author has chosen to under-reveal the world in which Mahalia lives, allowing the reader's imagination free rein. While I enjoy discovering fictional worlds, I am eager to read some back-story which might give me more understanding of this interesting world, its magical-religious mores, history, geography, architecture. I am hopeful that the second book may have more rich details which beckon me fully into a universe that has depth and texture. The plot moves at a realistic pace rather than the kind of concentrated passage of time we have come to expect from the evening news and prime time television. And the characters are a balanced blend rather than the more one-dimensional folk who people a lot of fantasy. It could be tempting for a first-time author to make Mahalia, in particular, overly clever or overly wise or overly brave; the author has resisted this, choosing to show this young woman in her uncertainty, her grief, and her self-doubt. As another reviewer has observed, she has also resisted making the antagonists completely unsympathetic in an attempt to make the heroine bigger and better than everyone else. But perhaps the two most unusual aspects of the book are the fact that Mahalia herself is unable to practice magic in a magical world, and that magic is only minimally understood, even by its practitioners. Instead of an internally consistent structure of magical tradition and discipline, the reader is invited to explore how magic works in this world right alongside the characters.I look forward to a sequel (and perhaps a pre-quel).
