Decent, but not great.Good for ages 4 through early tween By Amazon Customer This book isn't great, but it's decent and relatively accessible (even if Frozen is on its way "out" for your kids, like it is with mine). It has a couple of pages of hair care basics (wash, condition, trim regularly, etc.), some tips for adjusting for thick vs. thin hair, then provides details on how to:* no-heat curls (2 options)* curling with an iron (2 options)* elastic bands, bobby pins, ribbons* decorating a hairbrush with glitter* decorating hair pins with flowers, pearls, or ribbon* decorating a headband with an ornament, ribbons, yarn (for a "snowball"), flowers, or snowflake trim* decorating a hair comb with pearls, flowers, ribbon, and/or tinfoil ("icy!")* decorating an elastic band with flowers* 3 types of ponytail* 2 styles of braid* using the "Topsy Tail" or a "bun maker"* 3 slightly-more complicated hair stylesI found the pictures far more helpful than the accompanying text, though sometimes still not quite helpful enough, and the book does have some minor editing issues (like numbering things 1, 2, 22, 2c, 2d, 3), but overall you'll probably find a handful of things that are usable. The styles are probably good for ages 4ish through tween.

Girls who love Frozen will enjoy the colorful drawings and the photos of hairstyles that you can create, providing you have long hair. There isn't much for short hair, I'm afraid.I am puzzled by who the intended age group is. The description says ages 5 to 12, grade level 5 to 8. Aside from that discrepancy, I just don't see 12-year-olds as wanting a book that looks like a picture book for beginning readers. Yet the do-it-yourself advice is clearly aimed at the older children, since it involves hot instruments that you would not hand to a 5-year-old.That said, the hairstyle methods seem good for girls who want to dress up their long hair. How did girls curl their hair in the old days? A couple of options are illustrated. How do you make braids? How do you decorate a pony tail? It's all here.Personally I didn't like the advice to tease your hair. It seems unnecessarily damaging for delicate hair. Also, youngsters shouldn't really need so many hair products: custom-made hair oil, leave-in conditioner... well, at least they don't recommend dyes! I would have liked a side-bar for parents about avoiding the more toxic shampoos and conditioners.Anyway, the graphic design is award-worthy. For children under 12, I recommend that an adult read this and give appropriate advice before turning the child loose with a curling iron and a glue gun. Safety first!

My granddaughter, age 6, and such a fan of 'Frozen' will love this book. It is a nice size with very nice photographs if all the hairstyles and accessories used. The authors used real models for the hairstyles, and that will really appeal to young people. There are 94 pages of information about caring for your hair, hair products and how to use them, trucks for your hair- using Bobbi pins and elastic a, using ribbons in your hair; unique accessories like pearls, tiaras, ribbons, flowers, and bows; different hairstyles with explicit instructions in how to arrange your hair, with photographs to accompany the instructions. This is the best part of the book. I really like the different braids, and buns, and hairstyles. My granddaughter has long hair, and I can see that she will want to try every style. We have a lot if fun ahead.Recommend. prisrob 10-06-15

Beginner's Iceland - A four-day self-drive itinerary Iceland is one of Europe's most enticing and unique holiday destinations. It's no overstatement to say that its scenery is world class. It's simple to rent a car and get out on the open road to explore it for yourself. Route 1 encircles the entire island, so if you have a couple of weeks, you'd be able to see the country's highlights. Most people, however, only go for a few days and don't see much beyond its capital city, Reykjavik. If you're one of those visitors that don't have the luxury of having weeks to vacation at a leisurely pace or your budget will only stretch to a short break, then this four day itinerary will ensure that you return home having seen the must-see sights. Once almost prohibitively expensive, favourable exchange rates now give you more clout for your krona and you'll find prices more in line with the rest of Europe. Just a short hop from major European cities such as London, and with Icelandair offering stopover packages to and from North America, it's never been easier to get there. Note: This itinerary is designed as an add-on to a Reykjavik stay and doesn't cover the capital's tourist attractions. What destination highlights will you see in Iceland? - well-trodden landmarks like the natural wonders of Geysir and Gullfoss - less well known sights like the charming Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon and the quaint turf covered houses on a farm at Keldur - lead you to a remote beach where you'll find a decades-old plane wreck - the windiest bridge in the country where you can quite literally walk from Europe to North America - the tradition of eating shark meat at a tiny museum hidden up a gravel track at Bjarnarhöfn on the scenic Snæfellsnes peninsula, and why you must never consume your hákarl fresh - the best of Iceland's water-based attractions: the phenomenally beautiful Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and the luxurious Blue Lagoon spa What does your itinerary include? - A four-day step-by-step tour of Iceland - all the planning is done for you. - Detailed maps, directions, and navigation information to guide you easily from place to place. - Insider tips for saving time and money, including plenty of free activities. - Beautiful photographs of key sights. - Personalized sightseeing suggestions - meaning less time spent searching & more time spent doing! Why should you buy this guide? Each Unanchor travel guide is an itinerary including a prioritized timeline of sites, maps & directions between each site, as well as insider tips. All the research work is literally already done for you. You just grab the guide and go explore now. No need to spend hours of time opening dozens of websites or getting buried under a pile of guidebooks and maps. It's like having a personal tour guide in your pocket but with the freedom to deviate from the plan and without the cost! With suggestions on where to eat and which hotels to choose, plus clear step-by-step maps leading the way, this guide will take the effort out of your Iceland trip planning, leaving you free to focus on the amazing sights that will make this a trip to remember! Guarantee At $6.99, the itinerary will pay for itself the first time you follow my advice on dining and traveling destinations. If you are unhappy with the itinerary for any reason, Amazon provides a full refund. What are waiting for, get this guide and go explore Iceland!

Henry (Hank) Stone was recruited to establish and command a military organization to counter a pending invasion of Earth and other planets in the stellar neighborhood. In that process he had to meet invasion fleets from two different species each of whom was being controlled by Arber General Artus Brondin. (See Book 1 - "Stone Genesis") Just when Hank thinks that things are substantially resolved and that peace and calm might be the order of the day, strange things happen on Saark that come to his attention. Saark is a planet in its iron age and is under surveillance by a cloaked station. A telepath on Saark attempts to contact the station and its commander by name and that was not though to be possible. After addressing that issue, Hank attempts to bring closure to the Brondin matter only to find that General Brondin has another curve to throw his way. During an interview with Brondin acknowledges that he is not from Arber and that his family rules the system in which he was born, some 4400 light years distant. He brags that his family will avenge his death when he is likely executed for his crimes and mass murders. He notes that his family controls a weapon capable of causing a star to go nova. This is not a threat that Hank can take lightly as too many lives are at stake. Now Hank and his staff have to find Brondin's family and the Starkiller weapon before it can be deployed. There is evidence that the Brondin Family had already deployed such a weapon in the past killing billions. The use of the weapon must be prevented. Hank has a valuable tool in his toolbox that could bring about just the events necessary to foil the Brondin's evil. His T-Raptor teams are becoming proficient at a new kind of combat utilizing telepathic capabilities. This capability has been substantially enhanced by multi-species application of telepathic talents. He also finds that there are surprises awaiting him in the Brondin's home system that could well make the difference.

The Spirit of Christmas, by Nancy Tillman

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4–&I had just nodded off,/at a quarter past four,/when the Spirit of Christmas/stepped in through my door. So begins this lovely story in which all the delights of the season are presented. Realism and fantasy are satisfyingly paired to bring the mixed-media illustrations of treasured holiday scenes to life. Many of the paintings include bits of lyrics and music from well-known carols. The message is sweet; no matter how fancy one's decorations, no matter how elaborate one's feast, or how many pretty packages wait beneath the tree, &It is love that makes the angels sing. A beautiful and timeless book.–Linda Israelson, Los Angeles Public Library END

From Booklist Handsomely illustrated, this Christmas book is bound to be hyped as the perfect seasonal gift. In rhymed verse and a first-person voice, the narrator begins: “I had just nodded off, / at a quarter past four, / when the Spirit of Christmas / stepped in through my door.” The “Spirit” conjures up scenes, symbols, smells, and tastes of the season that are encapsulated in spare, rhythmic words: “Candy cane tongues / and marshmallow mustaches. / Everyone caroling songs of goodwill.” A toy-soldier band, a lion and lamb, snow angels, and Santa Claus are beautifully depicted and lead to the Christmas tree and the message behind the celebration. The Spirit reminds the narrator, “Remember, this all began with a child. / Because it took nothing but love to begin it, / it’s not really Christmas if love isn’t in it.” Tillman’s sentimental sensibility and beautiful artwork ensure that this will become a popular choice at holiday time. Grades K-3. --Julie Cummins

Review

“Tillman (On the Night You Were Born) expertly swirls together reality and fantasy--the narrator's child delights in the sight of the decorated tree, the lion lies down with the lamb--as is fitting for such a magical night.” ―Shelf Awareness

“Handsomely illustrated, this Christmas book is bound to be hyped as the perfect seasonal gift. …Tillman's sentimental sensibility and beautiful artwork ensure that this will become a popular choice at holiday time.” ―Booklist

“A beautiful and timeless book.” ―School Library Journal

“As the adult speaker of the story nods off in a comfy red chair, the Spirit of Christmas appears, ready to get the narrator in the holiday spirit. What follows is a buoyant, imagistic tribute to the season, as the Spirit lists joys both and intangible, before offering the reminder: ‘Because it took nothing but love to begin it,/ it's not really Christmas if love isn't in it.' Tillman's ethereal illustrations are surreal but captivating.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Bestselling author Tillman offers a dreamlike interpretation of the collective spirit that permeates the holiday.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“The wonderful colored illustrations convey a sense of joy and peace.” ―Children's Literature

“As in On the Night You Were Born, the words directly address a young listener with comforting, fanciful imagery . . . Culminating in a final scene of a sleeping child in a floating bed under a watchful moon, this gentle, tender offering will buoy children with its strong messages of safety and love.” ―Booklist on It's Time to Sleep, My Love

“A luxuriant bedtime retreat for children and parents alike.” ―Kirkus Reviews on It's Time to Sleep, My Love

“This is one of those rare baby books that should make both skeptics and sentimentalists of all ages happy.” ―Publishers Weekly on On the Night You Were Born

“A beautiful tribute to the uniqueness of every child.” ―Kirkus Reviews on On the Night You Were Born

“Many parents will welcome this opportunity to tell their children how special and loved they are.” ―Booklist on On the Night You Were Born

The other books were all classics but this one was the best of the lot. The book had a message that applied to both my 2 year old daughter and my 29 year old daughter. It was beautiful and I found myself tearing up at the end of the book. My daughter loved the pictures and has had me read the book to her quite a few times.

When I read "The Spirit of Christmas" I knew it was the one for this year. It is rhyming, which I love, and told in first person by a mother, or grandmother,or a favorite aunt, or simply the giver of the book. The spirit of Christmas comes to her and tries to help her feel the spirit of Christmas. He names several things the spirit of Christmas brings: "Bells, he said, Jingle bells! Bells right away! Bells on a one horse galloping sleigh" and "Snow that lies silent, As quiet as a mouse, And roads that all lead to your grandmother's house." Near the end he reminds her that the season was started by a child and that's when it dawns on her, "That's when I got it! That's when I knew! The thing that was missing from Christmas was you!" My daughter-in-law read it and I ask her what she thought of it and she said, "I think you love us." That is true.

I purchased one for my little niece and I look forward to reading it to her at Christmastime. This book is an absolute MUST for everyone's library! I would suggest that you buy one for someone you love AND buy one for the gift giving that is available in all of our cities for the underprivileged children. The Spirit of Christmas has messages that will warm your heart. Sure, the children definitely "win" by having this book read to them, or by reading it themselves, but as an adult, you will find your spirit deeply touched by these words. Heck, you may even want to buy a copy for an adult who still has that "child-like" spirit -- I'm sure they'll love it too.Peggy McColl, [...]

Twenty-five years after its original publication, Do I Have to Say Hello? Aunt Delia's Manners Quiz for Kids and Their Grown-ups is back, and do we and our kids all need it. In a series of lighthearted multiple-choice quizzes, alternate scenarios, and true-or-false questions, Delia Ephron, the author who brought us the best-selling How to Eat Like a Child, depicts a range of possibilities that reflect life as it is as well as life as it ought to be. Covering table manners, car manners, playground manners, school manners, and more, this is an audiobook that is sure to delight (and horrify) adults and children of all ages.

Aunt Delia knows what makes the difference between a pleasant and an excruciating visit to a friend's house in the company of a young child. She knows the proper order in which the following actions take place: (a) Throw up; (b) Get out of the car; (c) Ask Uncle Jerry to pull over. In short, she is practical and basic: She does not get into fish forks, but she knows what to do with bubble gum. She also deals with such things as kindness, sharing, consideration, generosity, and diplomacy.

This is a wonderful book that ought to be back in print By A Customer Do I Have To Say Hello, by Delia Ephron, is a really great manners book for kids. It is hilariously funny - my 5 year-old son and I were laughing so hard that it was difficult to keep reading - but also very clear about good manners. It's presented as a book-length quiz with multiple choice answers. The wrong answers are obviously wrong, but are quite realistic in showing bad manners. The reader gets the point about what's right, but in a way that is extremely funny, never preachy or santimonious. For example:"You want another helping of corn. Do you say, "Please pass the corn, Uncle Jerry"? Do you say, "Yo, corn"? Do you bang the table with your knife until Aunt Delia and Uncle Jerry ask what you want?" The book also makes it obvious that good manners have everything to do with treating other people with kindness and consideration instead of just learning the proper form. For example, there's nothing about which fork to use, but plenty about being civil when you are served food you hate. I have already bought this book four times for various kids, and I am terribly disappointed that it is out of print. Maybe someone from Doubleday will read this review and get the message.

By vilivo@erols.com Have you always hated it when you did something and your relatives reprimanded you for it, even though you have no idea why, even when they say that it's bad manners? Well, now you will with this book! It's sort of a parody of those quizzes you find in those magazines like "Vogue" or "Seventeen" and those old, old etiquitte books. The right answers are obvious, but the wrong choices are ten times funnier! Edward Koren's pen-and-ink illustrations makes the book all the more funnier (or more disgusting--check out that kid who talked with his mouth full of corn), and Delia Ephron, who wrote an equally funny book about love, does magic to what could have been a really boring topic. By the looks of things today, nobody really pays attention to their manners anymore, do they? Do they?

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Prepare yourself for a laugh-fest By A Customer I am shocked that this favorite is out of print. I am a children's librarian and the book is a hilarious read-aloud. I used to have two copies at my previous job, but now am searching for two more at my new library. This is because one will surely be taken and not returned. The waiting list for this one is mighty long

By "Seregil of Rhiminee" Before I begin to review and analyse Danie Ware's Ecko Rising, Ecko Burning and Ecko Endgame, I think it's good to mention that this trilogy is not your normal kind of a science fiction trilogy, but far from it - it's a mesmerisingly entertaining and unique trilogy. The story breaks and bends a few unwritten rules and treads along its own wondrous path.Danie Ware's Ecko novels - Ecko Rising, Ecko Burning and Ecko Endgame - are among the most entertaining and extraordinary genre-bending novels I've read to date. They form a thrilling, furious and unique trilogy that is something brilliant. It instantly captivates and simultaneously stimulates and teases the reader's mind, because the author combines science, fantasy and magic in an original way. This trilogy reads like a rich blend of epic fantasy and futuristic cyberpunk story. All three novels feel refreshingly different and vivid when compared to other science fiction novels and stand proudly on their own feet among other science fiction novels as unique achievements filled with imagination. The Ecko trilogy is a refreshing and imaginative blend of fantasy and science fiction that is ideal for fans of extraordinary stories. The author has made no compromises to endanger her original vision about a technology-free world where strange things happen, but has fully realised it in her own unique way.To be honest, I never would've thought that it would be possible to write this kind of an absorbing science-fantasy trilogy, because it feels so wonderfully vibrant and entertaining in every possible way that you can't help but wonder how the author has come up with the story. I don't recall reading anything quite like this ever before. There have been a few similar kind of novels and stories, but they haven't been able to reach this level of entertainment. I'm aware that what I just wrote is high praise, but in this case all praise is fully warranted due to the trilogy's excellent entertainment values. The main reason why the Ecko trilogy is intriguing and works so well is that it's shamelessly entertaining and fast-paced. Besides being a fast-paced and intriguing account of a savage person's adventures in a fantasy world, this trilogy is thought-provoking and offers food for thoughts. Here's a bit of information about each of the three novels:Ecko Rising:- Tamarlaine Benjamin Gabriel, aka the 'Ecko', is a man who operates out of futuristic hi-tech London. He's a cynical rebel and assassin who makes his own rules in a repressed and subdued society.- London is a place where Pilgrim rules. There's no room for social freedom anymore, because people are subdued and happy with their existence. Nobody fights against anything or anyone, because they're content and don't even protect themselves anymore.- When Ecko's biggest job goes badly wrong, he wakes up in another world that is different from our world. He is surrounded by people who wonder what he is, because they've never seen anything like him before. He doesn't know where he is, but soon he learns that he is in Roviarath. Roderick of Avesyr, the Bard, welcomes him to Roviarath. Ecko finds out that he is in a tavern called The Wanderer.- Ecko thinks that he may be in Virtual Rorschach, which is a functional and unique reality that has been made for him and from him. In other words, he may be stuck in his own head, but he doesn't know if it's true or not. He has to try to find a way to return to his own world.- The place, The Wanderer, where is Ecko is full of different kind of people with pasts of their own. The people range from a human who can transform into a beast to a political outcast.- An apothecary and healer called Amethea and her apprentice, Feren, are travelling throught the grasslands and run into terrible trouble. Amethea is kidnapped by a strange creature and Feren is left alone to survive. Amethea is taken to Maugrim who needs her to do something and welcomes her to the world's new beginning...Ecko Burning:- Ecko wanders around Roviarath after what happened at the end of the previous novel. He feels abandoned and a bit bitter about what has happened, because he hasn't been rewarded and sent home. He ransacks the debris, because his hoarded stash vanished with The Wanderer. He thinks that the Bard has died.- CityWarden wants Ecko to do someting for him: a little trade for the things he's collected.- The plains are diseased and suffer from blight - the rot has begun to spread its tentacles around the plains. Ecko learns that what he and his companion did may be the source of the blight. The blight is fatal to people's lives, farmlands, culture and cities.- Lord Phylos has taken control of Fhaveon and tries to bring the plains under his control. His moves are brutal and he tightens his grip on people.- Amethea is a bit disturbed by what happened to her.- The Bard has arrived in London. His sudden and unexpected arrival causes amazement in people. He is given a unique opportunity to realise everything he ever wants, but he has to give up his soul for it...Ecko Endgame:- Triq is afraid and thinks that the aftermath of Aeona would prove to be too much. She fears that the blight and the winter will finish them all. Amethea shows Triq a terrifying sight.- Winter has arrived in the Varchinde and the grass on the plains is dead. The blight has spread and threatens many people.- Rhan makes plans and tries to lure the Kas into a final confrontation.- Ecko realises that he has to face a great threat that has come from his own world.- As events rush into motion, the inevitable endgame approaches...Each of these novels is a fun read. They've been written in an entertaining way that makes readers enjoy them as soon as they begin to read them. The story flows fast forward and takes readers on a wild journey into another realm where weird things happen and where trouble and unrest brews under the otherwise calm surface. The author moves the story masterfully towards the final confrontation and reckoning.I love the author's way of adding political intrigue and tension to these novels. The first novel is a pretty straight-forward adventure story, but gradually the author builds up tension by adding political intrigue and violent happenings to the story.Because writing about political intrigue and all things related to it seems to be a bit difficult for many authors, it was nice to read a trilogy in which these issues were handled in an entertaining way. There was nothing heavy or tedious about the author's vision of political intrigue. It's great that the author writes well about issues related to commerce and trade, because it was enjoyable to read about them. It added lots of realism to the fantasy world. The characterisation works well and the narrative shifts nicely between the characters. The different characters - Ecko, Lugan, Amathea, Triq, the Bard, Maugrim, Phylos etc - are fully realised with feelings and ambitions of their own. Some of them are more fully fleshed than others, but each of them is a unique character. One of the best things about the story is that all of the characters can die or suffer. None of them are invincible and bad things can happen to them. I liked this very much, because it added roughness to the story.Character interaction is good. The author writes well about what goes on between the characters and how they feel about each other. I think that readers will especially enjoy reading about Ecko's reactions to other people, because it is handled perfectly.Ecko is an interesting character, because he is a modified, cynical and savage man. He has been built to be many things: stealther, spy, thief, tech and assassin. He is a unique man with extraordinary skills and quite an attitude. He finds himself in another world that doesn't have technology. He has to survive in this strange world, because he seems to be stuck there and can't escape unless he somehow finds a way to get back to his world.Ecko can be called an anti-hero, because he is foulmouthed and thinks mostly about his own wellbeing and pays little attention to others. When he realises that he begins to care about others and what is happenings around him, he is angry at himself. Although he is not an easy person and acts in a sociopathic way, he's strangely loveable. It was intriguing for me to read about how Ecko reacted to the changes in his life and how he handled things. His remarks and observations about many things and people around him were funny and witty.I enjoyed reading about the Bard and his adventures. His arrival in London was a wonderful surprise. The events that followed his arrival were mesmerising. I won't go into details about these events in order to avoid writing spoilers, but I can mention that readers will enjoy reading about them, because the Bard becomes a changed man. These novels are full of well placed and well written action scenes. These scenes are fascinatingly fast-paced and brutal. The characters have to fight for their survival, but all of them are vulnerable and may suffer during battles. There's plenty of humorous elements in this trilogy. The author uses popular culture references in an interesting and funny way (I can mention that there's even a reference to Cthulhu in these novels). Some of the dialogues are wonderfully infused with humour.Danie Ware has created a fascinating fantasy world. She writes captivatingly about the different places and their inhabitants. The world has its own history and lore, but much of the ancient lore has been forgotten. The author writes well about what has been forgotten and how some of the ancient knowledge has seeped back to the world.Maugrim's ability to use ancient power that people had forgotten had a distinct edge of dark fantasy that I found fascinating. It was intriguing to read about what he could with his powers and how he created new creatures, monsters and beasts. He had power and he intended to use it to his advantage. It was also intriguing to read about the blight, because it caused problems to people. The blight was a serious threat to all who lived on the plains, because the grass began to die and crops were in danger of failing. Danie Ware writes realistically about the effects of the blight, because it can wipe out people.Danie Ware has created an immersive trilogy that grows richer and more complicated with each novel. She pays attention to action and entertainment values, but also focuses on developing her fantasy world. There's a fine balance between depth, action and entertainment. In my opinion, the story has a few dark elements that will most likely appeal to readers of George R.R. Martin, Joe Abercrombie and Mark Lawrence. It's nice that Titan Books has published this trilogy, because we need this kind of series in which author blend different elements in an inventive way. This kind of series are unfortunately rare and only a few of them are worth reading, so the Ecko trilogy is a real gem. I honestly think that everyone who is a bit fed up with formulaic science fiction stories will love this trilogy, because it's boldly different and vivid. The fusion of fantasy and science fiction elements works perfectly, because the story is good.I think it's good to mention that the story may not be to everyone's liking, but that's not a bad thing. In fact, it's an extremely good thing, because it shows that the author doesn't try to please all readers. I have lots of respect for authors who are not afraid to shock and thrill readers with their stories. In my opinion, Danie Ware is definitely an author to watch. Because I loved her way of combining Tolkienesque fantasy with cyberpunk elements, I look forward to reading new stories written by her.I'm a bit torn between giving this trilogy four stars or five stars (on the scale from one to five stars), but the strong entertainment values tip the scale towards five stars. I truly enjoyed this fast-paced trilogy and found it mesmerising, because it was something different and exciting.Danie Ware's Ecko trilogy is wonderfully entertaining because of its original combination of epic fantasy and science fiction. It's first class entertainment to adult readers who enjoy good stories. It's one of the most exciting new trilogies to appear during the recent years, so please take a look at it and let yourself be hooked by the fast moving and imaginative story. If you're fascinated by action scenes, good stories, plot twists, magic, science and witty humour, you'll find all of them here in an addictive format.Excellent entertainment!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. kind of like that. However By KK *I received this item for free or at a discount in exchange for my honest review*I am a BRAND new blogger, I had only started my blog about a week or two before I received this book. While I never intended on starting a blog to make money, the idea intrigued me. I saw this book, and figured, why not. The writing style is informative, and very straight forward. As a person BRAND new to blogging, I felt there was a lot of information for me to digest and use at my discretion. There was a lot of information presented, and whether I use it or not, I'm not sure. Some of the book did remind me very much of something you would hear at one of those "seminars" where you are invited for cheap coffee in a hotel banquet room and listen to someone talk for an hour and then they convince you to give them $5,000, kind of like that. However, I can't say the information is junk because it was informative to me as someone who knows little about this world. I don't know if I'll dive in and put the effort in up front to make passive income, but if I want to, his information is pretty easy to follow.I don't know if someone more experienced would get a ton of benefit from the book, it does seem to be geared more toward newbies who might need guidance (like go with an established web designer, who is your audience, etc). The writing style is easy to read, and a very quick 44 pages (in large font). I can't say this book will change my life, but then again, I'm still a newbie so you never know :)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Left with lots of doubts. By SandraTWP The truth is, there's not really any big secret to a successful, monetized blog. It's more like... well, a recipe. Everyone has their favorite recipe for pound cake (or bread, or chocolate chip cookies). The truth, however, is that all of these favorite recipes (the ones that work), have certain elements in common. What makes each recipe unique are the ratios... the techniques the writer of the recipe uses... and your personal preference for the end product. After all, if you like chewy chocolate chip cookies and the recipe produces cakey cookies... it might be the perfect recipe for someone else, but just not for you.Which brings me back to this book. At 44 pages long, it's a quick read. Don't be fooled, though. It's not short because it's short on information. It's short because the author doesn't waste paper or time rehashing ideas. He states what you need to know in clear terms, and organizes the book well so you can refer back. Here's the thing: Just because the book is a quick read doesn't mean the realization - the making real - of a solid, well monetized blog will happen quickly. Colker gets the idea across quickly and succinctly, so you (in turn) can spend your time better by actually putting his ideas into action.Unlike other titles I've read on blogging (and reviewed here), Colker doesn't make a pretense of telling you more than he actually does. For example - in Chapter 9, he covers our (branded) presence on social media. I really like two things about his approach. He tells you that you must have this. This is honesty, and I appreciate it. If you were selling a book, you wouldn't keep all the copies at home -- you'd put them in book stores where the customers go. The truth is, no one is going to find your blog unless they know it's there. And those readers? They're on social media. Too many other blogging advisory books pussy foot around, saying to "Do it when you're ready..." Um, being ready is a myth. Do it, be yourself (see chapter 2) and learn as you go.He doesn't pretend that he's telling you everything you need to know about each social media channel. This is a good thing. He gives you perspective to approach your social media presence from, and he uses plenty of good solid, keyword search terms so when you turn to Google, you should get solid, helpful results off the bat.One thing that surprised me about this book. There's very little -- in fact, virtually no, self-promotion. Am I the only one who thinks that's weird? I've read other how-to-make-money-blogging books where I skipped out to check out the writer's blog only to discover (as I suspected) they're not truly making any money on their blogs, and sometimes they're not actually even implementing any of the practices they espouse. Colker's writing seems spot on, but in the book, there is NO reference to any blog of his own. On the back cover, there is a head shot (of the BACK of his head - okay, so he wants his privacy when he's popping out for a latte), but no links, no urls, no domains, no nuthin'. For someone who has written what appears to be a well put together book, we (again) are seeing an author who's not following his own advice (chapter 10). This time around, I went looking for Colker's blog because I thought, after reading this little book, I'd enjoy reading it. Instead, I find my confidence slightly undermined. Why didn't he share his url? Why isn't he driving traffic to his blog? So, you know me (or if you don't, here's a little insight). I went looking. Online. Can't find Mr. Colker. Well... not this one. I mean, I found several Mr. Colkers. But none of them sound like a match for this guy.Taking a look at his Amazon author page, I found some blog posts. Eureka, right? Well, not so much. The blog posts were from a free wordpress site. Any newbie who's done the LEAST little bit of research will tell you that you do NOT use a Wordpress.com site if you want to monetize your blog. You use a self-hosted site, which, if you want to use wordpress. And the posts.... the most recent posts are from May 2014. There's a couple from April, and a couple from March... and that's it.And the topics -- they're all over the place. COMPLETELY the OPPOSITE of what he says in the book. So, I'm thinking, hm, maybe he's using this site for writing samples. Sometimes we writers take on writing for others (I have). This is a good solution to have a fast way to send potential employers samples of your writing on different, unrelated topics. But... Seriously, you're selling a book about blog writing (for money)... show people a blog worth emulating. This isn't it. So don't use it as the sample on your Amazon page. It undermines your credibility. The thing is... There's good solid content in this book. Did he write it? Probably, I have no reason to think he didn't. On the other hand, he could have hired a ghost writer and is now marketing the content that he paid for an owns. If that's the case, I really wise he'd hired the ghost writer to write a good, exemplary blog. Here's MY bottom line: It's a great starting point for a new blogger, and I think it's a great blue print for an experienced blogger starting a new site. It's NOT something I'd rely on for long term guidance. All those unanswered questions, frankly, make me question how much of an expert Mr. Colker really is.I received a copy of this book at not cost in exchange for an honest review. Any opinion expressed here is mine alone.

A Bit Too Basic for Bloggers By Amazon Customer I have had my blog for about four years now and haven't made any big bucks yet so I was curious to see what Brand Colker had to say in How to Make Big Bucks from Big Blogs.First of all, I think the title is a bit misleading when it says big blogs because this is basically a book for beginners. Most beginners aren't instantly going to get a big blog. Even those who have been blogging for years haven't achieved this. It's a bit of a catch 22 because you aren't going to make any money unless you already have a big blog.I think it's a good resource for beginners because it outlines the basics. There was nothing here that was new to me with an established blog. I wanted to see if he had some great formula or missing component I didn't know about but it's all very basic.I received the audio version and the reader sounds very computer generated and isn't very engaging which makes it a bit difficult to stay focused on. It's very short however so I was able to listen to it in it's entirety in just over an hour. While he's good at outlining what you need to do, it lacks the how to. There is no information about where to go to do the things he suggests. This would be a good resource for someone to start out with but if you already have a blog and are just looking to monetize it, How to Make Big Bucks from Big Blogs isn't going to be your answer.Disclaimer: I received this in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Nowak Brothers Mikkel and Szandor kill monsters. They're not government funded, they're not from a time-honored lineage of hunters, nor are they rich kids with lots of toys. They're two twenty-something brothers from the poor side of town who have taken it on themselves to rid the streets and underground of creatures who would prey on the innocent. Donning gas masks and using makeshift weaponry, they delve into the labyrinthine sewer system of New Avalon to grapple with snarling zombies, flesh-eating ghouls, insectoid hive creatures, and more. It's a dirty job and it rarely pays, but someone has to do it.

I Kill Monsters (Nowak Brothers #1)

Hired by a woman from the rich side of town who believes she's being stalked by monsters, the two brothers think they've finally gotten an easy job that will pay well. But as they follow the clues, things are not adding up. Kidnappings, jackbooted commandos, and mysterious emails are just the beginning. Soon they find themselves involved in something bigger than monsters. It's anybody's guess whether they'll come through it alive, much less get paid. I Kill Monsters is an exciting punk rock urban fantasy for those who enjoy their protagonists with a mouth on them and a weapon in their hands.

Jabberwock Jack (Nowak Brothers #2)

Mikkel and Szandor are back! Everyone's favorite monster hunters return for a new adventure, and this time it's a monster that's bigger than they have ever dealt with before! While on a routine job in the city's underground tunnels, they stumble on a creature thought lost for years. They are then invited to join a hastily assembled team of hunters going underground to try to kill the enormous serpent. Delving deeper into the darkness than they have ever gone before, Mikkel and Szandor find themselves searching for this massive beast in dark overflow tunnels and the endless labyrinth under New Avalon. But creatures beneath the city are not their only problem. Soon tensions begin running high among the assembled hunters, threatening to derail the mission and put them all in danger. Will they succeed, or will they fall prey to the gigantic monster known as Jabberwock Jack?

Support Your Local Monster Hunter (Nowak Brothers #3) - Coming August 2016!

Support your local monster hunter! And specifically, support Szandor Nowak, because he needs help. After an unfortunate and unwilling break from monster hunting due to debt and poor health, Szandor is getting back into the business, riding along with older, more experienced hunters to get a feel for the work. This should have been easy and boring, but instead it all goes wrong. In a dark alley, Szandor finds a man hidden in trash. When he tries to help, the man's head explodes bloodily and spontaneously... and all over Szandor. This seems a horrible but otherwise anomalous encounter, so with no leads or reason for the man's death, Szandor continues on with his reckless life and hunter ride alongs. But when he encounters a second man whose head also explodes, Szandor's life starts to fall apart - his relationships, his friends, even his chance at hunting again. He even finds his brother Mikkel turning his back on him. But in the blackest night of loneliness, he finds a new hope - a mentor and a friend. But with this comes a hidden secret of Avalon's darkest places, a hidden underbelly he didn't know about. Things are going to hit the fan in Szandor's life - an army of monsters, a police homicide investigation, and his back against the wall. When all doors are closed, when he finds himself all alone, can Szandor fight a war he knows he can't win?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great sequel, lots of action and more monsters! By The Readers Hub I loved this sequel! If you have not read the first book please do! Any monster lover will absolutely love these two books. I had the chance to read and review the first book earlier this year and rated it 4/5. This second book is great and definitely deserves 5/5.There was a lot more character development in this book and the story is well written and progressed at a good pace. I normally don't praise a book as much however this really was a good book and for a brief moment really made me nervous regarding the fate of one particular character. I like the sudden twists in certain parts of the story and the overall ending. The author did a good job editing, formatting the book and taking the time to make sure certain details were looked at (chapter names, spacing, paragraphs). Details like these although small make a big difference for the reader especially on Kindle. If you like monsters, action, and thrills check this series out

When I was sent to earth, I had no idea what awaited me...  My creator summoned me. Then wiped my memory of him. Now I stood in a human body, my wings tucked into my back. The city that my angel group had landed in needed our help. Life for the people that lived here had become worse than bad.  Avoidables and Perfects are separated by discrimination. People are shunned because of their looks or various gifts. Avoidables are dangerous, living from fear of survival. Perfects are callous, living from fear of feeling.  The city is divided in two. One set of people hated the other. That had to change. They had to unite into one human race again. I would be the angel to make that happen.  Avoidables Angels is a spin off from Avoidables. You can read either book first, it doesn't affect the story. This book follows four angels as they navigate their new bodies and their earthly purpose. If you enjoy dystopian fantasy, you'll love this page turner.  Buy Now!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If you love books about angels, I highly recommend By Jennifer Patino I'm a big fan of the Avoidables series so I was very excited when I learned that there would be an Avoidables Angels spin-off. I'm a big fan of everything angels anyway, but I really liked how Rachel Medhurst wrote her own version of angels in the Avoidables universe. These angels are more metaphysical and have storylines that touch upon deep empathic feelings and some of the moments in the book were heartbreaking. In other words, I had a lot of feels while reading. :) The series has the same fast paced flow, witty banter between characters and fantastical vibe as the Avoidables. Book 5 is my favorite because I felt connected to that one the most. If you are a fan of Avoidables, I don't believe you'll be let down by Angels. It was definitely worth reading because I love the Avoidables universe so much.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This trio of humorous holiday tales will delight Frog and Friends fans By Deb Frog and his friends were preparing for Thanksgiving, one of their favorite holidays. “It’s a time of love. And sharing,” Frog explained to all of them. They were using a stump as a table and they even “thanked the tree’s roots for letting them use it.” They began to place food on the stump as everyone began to gather ‘round. There’s was a squirrel sitting on a stone, a pair of robins, peered down from a branch, a possum leaned forward to offer up her share, and even crickets came to the celebration. Very hungry, extra-super-hungry Hippo showed up late with a napkin already tucked under his chin. “I had Thanksgiving dinner at Little Zoo,” he explained, but was ready for more! There was plenty more, even for hungry Hippo, and the table was set with many different foods. There were “flies, mealworms, caterpillars, ants,” and even “kale and wild mushroom salad with watercress dressing.” Mmmmmmm! There was something for everyone and everyone was welcome, even little Hedgie the hedgehog. All was well until Hedgie spotted Hippo. Frog’s eyes grew wide and those quills went high and Hedgie curled up into “a spiky ball.” Everyone noticed Hedgie and soon there would be trouble, or so they thought. “Little Possums,” Possum cried out, “Come to Mama. Do not go near the hedgehog!” This was supposed to be the best Thanksgiving ever, but what could frog do with everyone running away? This trio of humorous holiday tales will delight Frog and Friends fans. Naturally Frog had to reassure everyone that Hedgie was quite harmless while all the while reassuring Hedgie that no one would hurt him. These short tales are a great addition to holiday books, especially with the addition of a New Year’s Eve tale. There are an abundance of Thanksgiving and Christmas tales, but not as many to start off a new year. Newly independent and confident readers can tackle this book alone or with a minimum of assistance with more difficult words such as “somersaults.” The artwork, combined with the exciting, humorous tales with Frog and his friends, has high appeal that young readers are definitely drawn to.Grades 1 to 2FROG AND FRIENDS (I Am A Reader):Frog and FriendsFrog and Friends: Party at the PondFrog and Friends: The Best Summer EverFrog and Friends: Frog’s Flying AdventureFrog and Friends: Outdoor SurprisesFrog and Friends: Frog Saves the DayFrog and Friends: Frog’s Lucky DayFrog and Friends: Celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s EveGrades 1 - 2This book courtesy of the publisher.
