10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A fantasy epic to remember By Kelly Matthews Yes, it's like 500 pages long, and yes, it took about two chapters to get into it. But, really, it's like three books in one and that makes for a fantastic trilogy.I read CRIMSON over the course of two and a half days and lost quite a bit of sleep to it. The characters are richly written and you understand their internal struggles as well as the external ones. Trevin is a conflicted prince who is a sorcerer and who is too young when he has to take over his kingdom. Add to that the pressure of his grandfather's reign being known as the Golden age and his father's as the Silver. What kind of pressure is that, how can he avoid the curse and live up to the previous generations of his family's rule? Nuevia is his Queen, his sanity and his savior. She is smart, sweet and kind of sassy. But my favorite character was Nils Ramesis, a sailor with a hidden past and something to prove.I hate reviews that give away spoilers, so I can't tell you everything I wish I could. The creatures here are terrifying. Neuvia is kind of like Snow White, friend to the animals. Pig is a creepy little dude. The battles in book three are so well-written you can see them. There are even two endings. I really liked that. Just, Wow! Get it, you will enjoy it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fantasy with a unique angle By Andrew West Crimson's main character has powerful magical powers. What makes this novel unique is that this magic, and the protagonist's self doubt, ultimately imperils the character and his kingdom. Meanwhile, brave men and women of the non-magical world take matters into their own hands, doing what they can to save the world. In the end, one is led to consider what is more admirable- mastering magic or mastering human skills.In the book I noticed great care was taken to develop the virtues and vices of this novel's heroes and villains, which made it for me a more rewarding and intellectually stimulating fantasy novel than most I've read.I think readers should give the novel a bit of time - for the first few chapters I was trying to get my bearings in terms of understanding this magical world and its characters. (Incidentally, in my Kindle edition, a map was missing from the front of the book, but was instead on the last page). My favorite characters came into full focus in the second half of the book, where one particular voyage becomes nearly a book within this book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Unique Adventure By Johnna As the other's have said, this was an epic adventure story with a magical twist. I also found it a little difficult to get into at first, but only because I was trying to figure out the layout and what the deal was with the main character. He was a bit fickle, which drove me crazy, but I had to remember he was a teenager when this epic starts. You know, if kids would just listen to their parents... Anyway, I really liked the people, and the monsters were fantastic and horrifying all at the same time. The flow of the story was really cool, because it changes up, it is almost like little stories tied together in a big story. You don't get bored with it taking place in only one place. (There is even an alternate world) And it was unique, there were so many different ideas and actions, with an overall, tie-it-together love story, that only bordered on sappy :) I really enjoyed it, couldn't stand when I had to put it down. As mentioned before, you can't say too much without giving the story away, and that would be no fun. Give it a go, you won't be sorry.

Great writing in this fast-paced story of adventure and dragons.Under the Ice Blades is a fast-paced read, but it’s not just mindless action. The book has just the right mix of descriptions, action, and character development. The developing romance between Angulus and Kaika is portrayed very well, and it was fun getting in both their heads to experience their conflicted thoughts about each other.It’s a shorter book than the others in the series, but the plot has some nice twists. The writing is really good. I wish that all authors wrote this well.This book is obviously the starting point to more adventures with dragons.As with all of Lindsay Buroker’s books, you really need to read the epilogue. :-)

Let's just say an unexpected and totally wonderful liason forms. Two people who really, really need each other and when they figure it out - wow!!All the characters we have come to know and love and cheer for are in it. Trouble is afoot in a secret weapons development site and much to everyone's consternation, the King himself is going to head the team that goes to check out what's going wrong.Mayhem, magic, dragons and sexual tension abound - just what we love about Lindsay's books. I'd give her books 10 stars if amazon would let me.

I mean c’mon how could you not with dragons, magic, dog fights/fighter pilots, and loveable and funny characters?I was rooting for this pairing to happen while reading the series. Kaika and Angulus, together, are a perfect match. I can't wait until Raptor comes out, though I wonder if it will top the awesomeness that was The Blade's Memory. I have faith that it will be its own brand of awesome despite this. I have yet to meet a Buroker book that I don’t like.

A suspenseful, exciting, and always engaging Urban Fantasy story By Sophia Rose I really enjoyed the author’s Baba Yaga series so I eagerly accepted this one where she again weaves her creative magic in writing an entertaining Urban Fantasy story of witches, dragons, shapeshifters, and dark secretive forces set to tear apart the world. A small band of misfit paranormals takes on the powers that be and the powers that live in the shadows in this paranormal adventure with a hint of romance. It ended on a high, hopeful note that felt more like a new beginning than an end.The story opens with witch cop, Donata Santori, called to a crime scene to interrogate the dead witnesses. Humans still are adjusting to the fact that they have magic users living amongst them, but Donata’s gift of speaking to the dead is a harder sell than oh say a healer like her sister. But when push comes to shove, she is right where she wants to be earning her own way and making a difference for people.This murder turns up something disconcerting in regard to a painting that is the main piece of evidence. The restorer who died makes Donata his new crusader in the fight to both render the painting harmless while getting it to give up its secrets before it falls into the wrong hands. The painting is spelled and it will take an expert and specially qualified restorer to work on it. Donata is appalled to discover her new contact also happens to be a half-dragon professional forger who has no idea he has a bit of flame and scale in his family tree.But between dodging the Cabal and her own paranormal Council, Donata and crew struggle to fulfill their tasks. Donata also is confused about her growing feelings for the forger and the feelings that are fanned back to life by a past lover who joins their rag-tag crew. It was one breathtaking, intense story nearly to the end once everything got going.Alright, this one sets up like a paranormal murder mystery in the beginning with the author carefully weaving in the worldbuilding and situation for each of the characters. Donata is the sole narrator. She was engaging and wry, tough, but has not wholly come into her own yet. She hopes that by completing the task laid out by the dead man that she will earn the respect of her family and her boss with the police. She is surrounded by characters who in their own ways are just as in limbo as she is and must figure out how to rejoin the world around them and make peace with their past.As to the romance, like many Urban Fantasies, this one has hints and some ‘moments’, but nothing concrete since the focus is on the quest and not the development of relationships. This story ended leaving things up in the air and a potential love triangle. Normally, I run from those, but not when they are developed organically and not just present to beef up the drama.The background of this story is strong. I enjoyed the color flavors of creative characters in that the half dragon is slowly learning about himself and the shapeshifter is more blended with Viking Berserker (yum), and there is also a Kobold who is like a short elf who can be a strong support or a dangerous annoyance when riled. Donata’s own witch background is the most filled in. Her spells were intricate and felt authentic when she was weaving and casting them (makes sense with the author’s background). But even the little things like delicious foods, the art connection, and the police politics were all nice layers to the story.I hope there is more after this story though I loved what I got. I would definitely recommend it to Urban Fantasy fans who enjoy a strong witch heroine and a colorful cast of paranormals supporting her in her mission to protect the world.My thanks to Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this story in exchange for an honest review.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great World Building By J. Jones According to Deborah Blake’s author’s notes this is the book that got her an agent. While she got an agent the book sat on the shelf unpublished until now.There are some really interesting takes on the paranormal in Veiled Magic. The world building and back story are both revealed in action and dialog as the story progresses. Characters are introduced as they are needed to keep the plot moving.I found the story to be exciting and tension filled. Donata Santori is a great character. She is a witch and a police woman who can talk to the dead. You would think that would be an exciting life. It isn’t. She works in the basement and is very isolated from everyone. On her first case out of the basement everything changes when the ghost of one of the murdered men demand that she keep a painting from falling into the wrong hands. That brings in three new and interesting characters. Together they start out on a very dangerous journey.I loved the interaction between Donata and the other characters. It kept the story moving as the plot developed. I did think there was a little flaw in the end. See if you feel the same about the fate of the painting.This could be the start of a new series. I hope so as this world is big enough to support a lot more action and adventure as well as adding new and interesting characters.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another triumph for Blake By Lauri Holmes I love the way Deborah Blake writes. She has well-developed characters who I quite like. I could see myself counting her heroines among my friends. Veiled Magic is a book that Blake wrote a few years ago but which has just been published in the wake of her success with her Baba Yaga series. Donata Santori is a witch who is also a member of the police force. Her job title is "Witness Retrieval Specialist," which means she talks to dead people to learn how and by whose hands they died. She does most of her work in the basement of the precinct, out of eyesight of her squeamish human fellow officers. But on this particular day her chief comes to her and says they have a body she needs to go out of her basement to talk to. And this body belongs not to a witness to the murder in question, but rather to the perpetrator of the crime, who was killed shortly after the crime in a freak "accident." In the process, she is contacted by the victim as well who is frantically insistent that she protect the painting that the thief was trying to steal. He says she must take the "Pentacle Pentimento" to an art restorer/forger of his acquaintance to keep it from falling into the hands of those who would gleefully plunge the world back into the scourge of Inquisition 2.0. In the process, our friend the witch must team up with a gorgeous half-Dragon and an even more gorgeous shape changer. Oh, and a kobold, and a cat and a dog. The group faces lots of danger in order to protect and uncover the secrets of the pentimento.Pick up this ebook. And then wait with the rest of us for the author to write a sequel.

The training time has been sliced to two weeks and covers the bare minimum needed to stay alive fighting the Delta Horde or the Darkness as some call them. If Jacob fails this short intense training, the entire family will have to be moved into a refuge camp. MSGT Masterson, the Drill Sergeant in charge whips them into shape the best that he can with the time allowed. Typical of boot camp, chaos becomes routine with repetition. The story begins at the Global Joint Base and it is Day of the Darkness Plus 90.The Deltas are continuing to evolve and they appear to be making conscious decisions. They are able to handle weapons and march in a column. Pretty scary thought to envision these Deltas starting to think and move in a cohesive manner. The descriptions of the Deltas are superb!This book is filled with action from the first page until the last. Lots of tactics involved and weapons abound throughout the story. Duke the Lab is a welcome addition to the team and can sniff the Deltas out in a hurry! I like the fact that the author uses a generous dose of humor to break up the tense moments. I had to laugh when a bandana was put on Duke's nose to protect it. In addition to Jacob one of my favorite characters was Stone and his background. He certainly could wield a mean weapon even at his age and despite his illness.The mission to Middleville, MI is absolutely incredible. Lives are lost but the ultimate prize is gained. It reminded me of the opening battle scene when the smell of cordite and burning flesh filled the air.All in all, a most exciting read which won't disappoint the reader. Lots of action, team work is one of the key ingredients throughout and characters are well developed.Most highly recommended.This book was borrowed under the Kindle Unlimited Program.

This one, The Shadows, is a freight train as a shadow falls across the world. From an abbreviated boot camp and right into the thick of things, we follow Jacob as he fights for his life and the lives of his fellow warriors as he learns to "embrace the suck." This book is filled with little patches of sunlight and even a little humor even as the Darkness gathers closer to Jacob and everything he holds dear.Jacob is a perfect point of view character as he is in turns bewildered and horrified by what his world has become, but he stands his ground and does what is necessary to survive. The supporting characters are superb, and the author does a wonderful job of making them real and relevant in a short period of time. These become folks you can care about, and I became invested in their wellbeing.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and now I cannot wait for the next in the series. Would earn six stars if I could manage it. Bravo, Mr. Lundy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Awesome Action-Packed sequel to The Darkness By Kelly Joseph Excellent follow-up to The Darkness. With the first book, we learned through the course of the story about the enemy our heroes are dealing with. They are evolving! The Shadows starts with a bang and doesn't let up. Jacob has come full-circle since we've seen him and pretty much has to in this 'new world'. I never like to give spoilers in my reviews so I'll keep it vague. We meet a few new characters in The Shadows (including an unsuspected canine hero) and they add richness to the story. The tactics are very well narrated by the author. He obviously knows his stuff. Gun guys/ military guys you won't be seeing the annoying nuances like "the safety on the revolver" or "racked the pump on the AR47" in this book. Great action and characters that you can actually care about (or wish they die). The end of the book leaves us with an "Oh S***" thought, and we'll have to wait for the next book to see what happens! The Invasion Trilogy is turning out to be a hell of a fun ride. Keep up the good work Mr. Lundy.

While I can understand while one reviewer thought it was too much about one company, I didn't really think so. Its more about the importance of testing and experimenting, and many companies can help with that. I also liked the discussion about data and models.. some good cautionary examples.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), son of a joint-engineer to the Board of Northern Light-houses, was born in Edinburgh. He was admitted advocate in 1875, but had determined to be a writer. Fascinated by Edinburgh low life, he cultivated a Bohemian style. His first work of fiction, “Treasure Island” (1883) brought him fame, which increased with the publication of “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” (1886). This was followed by his popular Scottish romances “Kidnapped” (1886), “Catriona” (1893) and “The Master of Ballantrae”(1889). In 1888, Stevenson had set out with his family entourage for the South Seas, and finally settled in Samoa at Vailima, where he temporarily regained his health but died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage, while working on his unfinished masterpiece “Weir of Hermiston” (1896). He suffered from a chronic bronchial condition (possibly tuberculosis). “Essays in the Art of Writing” (1905) contains seven essays, covering topics from the technical elements of style, to Stevenson’s literary influences, and the writing of his novels.

Good, but not completely satisfying By Reliquiae I was led to this book by reading Andrew Lang's reflections on Robert Louis Stevenson in his Adventures Among Books. Lang was enamored by Stevenson's writing, as am I. However, a lot of Stevenson's own writing about writing left me less than satisfied. I didn't find the TOC in this edition for Kindle to be active (although a previous one did); however, the footnotes are.The first chapter, "On Some Technical Elements of Style in Literature," was perhaps the most practical for writers, but it was almost as tedious to read as the essay's title suggests. Other essays, like "Books Which Have Influenced Me," were far more interesting in helping to uncover how Stevenson's thinking was shaped by a few important authors. "Not all men can read all books," he wrote, "it is only in a chosen few that any man will find his appointed food." In the essay, "A Note on Realism," Stevenson discusses the change in literature in his day, the move away from idealism to realism. There is a danger in realism, he cautions, of sacrificing beauty and significance while pursuing the passion missing in idealism. "Breathing as we do the intellectual atmosphere of our age, we are more apt to err upon the side of realism than to sin in quest of the ideal."That last 3 essays in this volume move away from technical and obscure information about writing to useful discussions about 2 of his own books. The essay about his first novel, and my favorite, Treasure Island, was very enjoyable. I was surprised to learn that what began as a map he drew of an imaginary island grew to be the adventure story that has influenced practically all other pirate stories. He claims to have taken inspiration for his characters from numerous literary sources. But the plot was rooted in his map. The concluding chapters are about another of his novels, The Master of Ballantrae. The first of these concerns the genesis of story. The last chapter is the make-believe preface he added to the second edition of the novel.Altogether, these 7 essays, some more helpful or more appealing than others, reveal the sources and processes Stevenson and other writers use. While there is some help here in understanding the mind of this great writer, the general audience may not find a great deal of pleasure in them. Better for most of us just to jump right into reading his classic stories.

Florid but entertaining By Dan'l Danehy-Oakes I really don't have much to say about this, except that the essays collected here are very much of their time. Which, I suppose, says something about the more contemporary books on writing I've read: are they very much of our time? Do any of them represent timeless truths about writing?For example, Stevenson goes off on the dialogue of "realism," suggesting that dialogue in fiction should be more, well, elegant. And I get that: when it works, as in for example, Jack Vance's work, it's beautiful. But I also like dialogue that sounds like something somebody could actually say in the circumstances.Probably the most entertaining-to-me essay here is the one on the birth of "Treasure Island." It seems that RLS started with a map and wrote based on it. He wrote it for family, reading it at a chapter a night. And his original title was "The Sea Cook," which is quite accurate but decidedly less exciting.

Perfect Starter Activity Book By Lacie Kenner I bought this for my 2 year old and we love it so far!We do a couple pages together before nap each day, she loves stickers and does great with the activities.There are lots of simple vocabulary words (animals, vehicles, clothing, food, etc) and pages that show beginner skills like patterns, numbers, matching, etc; there are a couple pages with very simple mazes as well, which she doesn't understand - but she is only 2 and the book is "recommended" for 3+ so I can't complain! At 2 years old she needs a little guidance as to what she's supposed to do on some pages, but by 3 all they would need is for you to read the directions for each page and they would be able to figure it out from there.The stickers are on perforated pages in the back so they are easy to tear out as you need them, and labeled per page so they're easy to find.We would definitely buy more sticker activity books like this!

It starts out slowly with great description and lighthearted, youthful fun. But don't let that fool you. It suddenly shifts (perhaps more rapidly than this reader followed at first) and we realize there is more to this peaceful northern scene and nature girl than meets the eye. I'm eager for the next installment to see how this struggle with wind, fire and water turns out.

The Viking's Curse is the first I've ever read by Xandra James and a first for me in this new sub-genre in contemporary paranormal fiction. Totally different types of supernatural characters. I'd describe TJ as a part human/part angel-like being and then Kol- a Viking Shifter with totally different abilities & characteristics than most shifters are known for, but I was pleasantly surprised! ...There were some times that I was a bit confused and wished there would have been more details and/or sooner on their deceased family members... But I totally enjoyed this unique storyline and didn't want to stop reading when I had to. This page turning must read has great descriptions and witty dialogue between the 2 main characters. Along with fantasy, mystery and suspense, there is plenty of heat and times where you will laugh out loud. I honestly do recommend this to any fiction readers. I was given a copy to read in exchange for my honest review.

Kol’s family has been cursed to protect the dead using their Viking warrior heritage. TJ is in Woodland Creek to uncover a mystery. Is she really in the wrong place at the wrong time? She’s been marked and now she’s going to have to face Kol and his curse if she wants to save herself.The story was well developed as it brought Kol and TJ together and had them working towards their individual goals. Neither knew each other very well which added an element of tension between Kol & TJ. There were interesting character introductions towards the end. I found the entire concept of the curse intriguing as well as the wrap up. It would be fun to see more of this expanded in future stories. Maybe taking one of the characters towards the end and spinning off. The Viking’s Curse kept me captivated and wanting more.

By armywifewith2 I have become lost in Woodland Creek with all these different stories in the same strange town lol. Therected is just something about the word Viking that grabs your attention! I mean I watch Ragnar on Vikings the show and LOVE HIM. All that violence and sexiness. This viking is something else! What an interesting twist to the story too. While in his "Viking" I guess you could say, he is completely different. A different being even, it was so very interesting and I loved it.I really enjoyed the story, poor T.J getting the Mark of Death was only the beginning and the story just gets better and better. I loved the first demon that came to kill her hahaha. I do wish there was a bit more detailed back story on the deceased wife. But I'm not going to complain too much. Overall good book I rated it in at four stars!!

The dialog is not particularly mature -- the characters all sound like teenagers (of which I have three!). The premise of the story is pretty good and I would have been interested in seeing how the story unfolds, but I just couldn't spend any more effort reading what felt like a young adult's novel. I stopped at around 28%.I wish the author well with his next ventures, but I'm off to find more compelling and engaging stories appropriate for adult readers.

An exciting, action filled book with plenty of space battles By Catherine Mackay If there is one thing a reader can guarantee with a Raymond Weil novel, it is the fact it will be hugely exciting, very entertaining, contain packet loads of action, great characters and aliens and dramatic space battles - The Star Cross is no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed this new offering from Raymond Weil and hope it will be the beginning of a new series. The bad guys in The Star Cross are aliens called Profiteers who find and then plunder back-water worlds for profit. The Profiteers turn up on Earth and begin to plunder Earth for its wealth and citizens - failure to comply results in the systematic nuking of Earth cities. It is left to Admiral Kurt Vickers and the colony world of Newton to find a way to remove the Profiteers from Earth space for good. Vickers and his small fleet of ships travel to Kubitz in the Gothan Empire (the Profiteers are a part of this Empire) where slaves are brought and sold in the hopes of recovering Earth's citizens and perhaps purchase weaponary that can be used to rid Earth of the Profiteers. Kubitz is a seedy den where anything can be bought or sold for a price, that is if your willing to pay a hefty, over-in-flated price and have huge amounts of gold on your person!!! The Star Cross is Raymond Weil at his best - I highly recommend it for its shear entertainment value.

I will give the author the benefit of the doubt in that he does not actually write like this for adults. I am only upset that it is not marketed as a juvenile book and I paid good money expecting at least a reasonable read based on all the 5-star reviews. I just don't get the reviewers. Either they are all kids or they have a really inadequate point of reference on what a good sci-fi book is.
