I was happy to see the return of all of my favorite characters. It picks up where the first two New Camelot books end, and introduces what I believe to be a teaser for part three of the series! So yay for what hopefully means more! And let's not forget the (long overdue) surprise....While I highly recommend this short, I also recommend reading the first two books in order to understand the characters better. Here's to hoping for more New Camelot in the future!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. sweet By Summer Ross I really enjoyed this Thanksgiving short by miss James. As always she provided entertaining dialogue, witty character's that come from her full length novels, and a short plot that kept me wondering. I'd love to tell you the summary but that would ruin the awesome surprise. This short story was read in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. James didn't disappoint and kept me guessing and yearning for more from my favorite characters.

The Farmer's Wife – the story of how a woman retrieves an apple from a hole in the ground – is one of the many Sufi tales for children. For over a thousand years it has entertained young people who join in the chant of this cumulative tale and, at the same time, learn its valuable lessons about the nature of problem solving and discovery. For more than 30 years Idries Shah's collections of Teaching-Stories and narratives from the Sufi tradition have captivated the hearts and minds of people from all walks of life. Shah selected the majority of these tales from oral sources. They are repeated in homes, courts and caravanserais throughout the Middle East and Central Asia.

The Farmer's Wife, by Idries Shah

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-While the folk art illustrations are boldly attractive, this cumulative tale falls short of the mark. While picking apples, a farmer's wife drops one down a hole in the ground. She asks a bird to get it for her, but the bird refuses. She asks a cat to jump at the bird so it will retrieve the fruit, but it refuses. She continues to seek help to no avail. Finally, she returns to the bird, who sets off the sequence of events readers have been waiting for. Oddly, though, it is the wind that finally blows the apple out of the hole. This story lacks the simple, effective rhythm of tales such as "The Old Woman and Her Pig." The striking pictures of golden hills, brilliant blue skies, and the woman's Middle Eastern dress are the highlight here.-Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA

Review "Enjoy ... new bright collections featuring different illustrators ... fine stories!" -- REVIEWER'S CHOICE, The Children's Bookwatch "Its pleasantly repetitive language makes it an ideal tool for developing reading readiness and beginning reading skills." -- Denise Nessel, Ph.D., National Urban Alliance for Effective Education "These stories ... help in the development of children's cognitive abilities." -- Robert Ornstein, Ph.D.

From the Publisher Beautifully illustrated in stunning color, this award-winning series of large-format children's books by Idries Shah presents tales from a rich tradition of storytelling. All books were well reviewed and one received a National Parenting Publications Honors Award.

For thousands of years all over the Middle East and Central Asia children have been entertained and taught by these stories and have continued to tell them in adult life. Until his death in 1996, Shah collected hundreds of such stories and adapted them to contemporary Western culture. His adult books continue to attract millions of readers from all over the world.

Sufi tradition affirms that there is a continuum of the children's story, the entertainment story, and the teaching story. A story can help young children deal with difficult situations and give them something to hold on to. Adults can at the same time understand it on a more spiritual level. Through repeated readings of this rich body of oral and written material both children and adults can now learn to develop the capacity to be more flexible, as well as get fresh insights into many things about themselves and about life.

By A Customer This is a new twist on the types of stories that kids love to read and hear over and over. It begins with a lady making a simple request...she just wants her apple. The chain of events that results though, teaches cause and effect in a fun way. What really makes the book a lasting treasure is the art work. We found ourselves going through the book both from front to back and back to front just exploring the colorful and playful art. I highly recommend this book for kids or even adults who like the playful prose and pictures. Two thumbs up for Mary Rose Santiago and Idries Shah. I look forward to seeing more of their works.

May I gently suggest that it was reviewed in haste? This book is a tour de force in higher order thinking, randomness and unforeseen outcomes.A story for children at first glance that is actually a blueprint.Children get this story. Why can not some adults even begin to scratch the surface of what is available here?Let your child decide! Buy this book for them, read it, ask questions as to what is occuring in the tale. Then watch and listen to your child. You may be surprised at the insights of your youngster!

Not just that if you keep at something you might persevere. But also that our ultimate success often comes by way something or someone outside ourselves - when we least expect it!

Schism (The Gifted Book 2), by Jenna Black

About the Author Author Jenna Black writes paranormal romance books and young adult novels, including "Shadowspell" and "Watchers in the Night", which was nominated for the 2006 Paranormal Excellence in Romantic Literature (PEARL) award. She's your typical writer: an experience junkie. Once upon a time, she dreamed she would be the next Jane Goodall, camping in the bush and making fabulous discoveries about primate behavior. She went to Duke University to study physical anthropology. Then, during her senior year, she made a shocking discovery: primates spend something like 80% of their time doing such exciting things as sleeping and eating. Narrowly escaping the boring life of a primatologist, she moved on to such varied pastimes as grooming dogs and writing technical documentation. Among her other experiences: ballroom dancing, traveling to all seven continents--yes, even Antarctica--becoming a Life Master in Bridge, and singing in a barbershop chorus.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Second book was even better than the first, which I loved By mlsimmons This is a fairly unknown series, but it is one that I’ve really enjoyed so far and highly recommend. I read book one, The Gift Dead, last year and found the story very complex with a lot of very well developed characters. There is a ton of politics in this series between the Gifted and UnGifted people and even more between the Gifted people themselves. The Gifted are humans with special abilities, like a power or magic, along with immunity to most diseases. They have to earn their gifts from the Anima, through a quest. The Gifted feel that these quests are assigned based on what is best for the Gifted race. If the Anima, it is usually done without question. It is a form of religion for the Gifted, though there is one Gifted person who does go to a Christian church, but that is frowned upon.Schism pretty much picks up where The Gifted Dead left off. Without going into too much detail, so as not to spoil this story or the previous one. The Anima has split into two groups with two Patriarchs, a US group following a more modern Doctrine. There is also group in France that call themselves True Order which is wanting to go back to a more old world Doctrine. The old world Doctrine is taking things back to not allowing women to have any say and other non-modern beliefs. The True Order also believes that they should be separate from the UnGifted and shouldn’t be subject to UnGifted laws. The beliefs and actions of the True Order’s Patriarch causes quite the stir in the US with the UnGifted. The Gifted are trying to flee France and even Europe. America is trying to close it’s borders to the Gifted refugees. The ones that are making it in are in danger of violence from scared UnGifted. When I first started reading this, I noticed a lot of similarities with things that are being suggested in some current events after the attack that happened in Paris. Blaming of an entire group of people because of the actions of a small faction of radicals. It was very mind-blowing to read this so close to the events of the Paris attacks. I actually read this book prior to Thanksgiving, less than a week after it happened. I love that this is tackling real-life problems in a paranormal setting (even though I don’t believe that was it’s intent). This is a series that has been called Game of Thrones meets House of Cards. This is a pretty good explanation of the series so far. There are these great characters, many of which are not good people. There are even some very terrible people. Even the people who aren’t bad people, have done some bad things for different reasons. The world that Ms. Black has built is very interesting with an exceptional story. It is a pretty dark story with some pretty harsh subjects and torture. I would say that if you read Rachel Vincent’s Menagerie and enjoyed it, you should really give this series a try. This is definitely a series where you will need to read The Gifted Dead before tackling this one, but well worth it. I’ve really enjoyed both books.**Book was provided to me by the author. This review is my opinion and was not requested or provoked in anyway by the author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Still Awaiting the Conclusion! By 30 Book A Month Reader Please note - You must read The Gifted Dead to understand this book. You will be totally lost not reading it first. When we left the story, Alberto di Tommaso has been declared Patriarch of the European Gifted, and Matt Landy is the rebel Patriarch of the American side. It is the first time in the history of the Arima that the Gifted have been divided and had two Patriarchs with the same powers. But that is where the similarity stops. Landy is a fair-minded individual who works long hours trying to do the right thing for the Gifted. Alberto di Tommaso is mad with power, prone to violent excesses, and a dictator in the truest sense of the word. However, it is Di Tommaso's brutality towards women that is the foundation of this story. In an effort to escape relationships and punishments with the European Patriarch, three very strong women from the previous book band together with a common goal - escape Di Tommaso.I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The world-building of the current Europe and America with the Gifted is truly remarkable and so vivid. As with the first book, character development is really where the story shines. There were a great many twist and turns that I didn't see coming, and it's hard to fool me when it comes to books. The reason I am giving this four stars instead of five is because there were sections of the book that seem to take a while to reach conclusion. At one point, I felt the story was really starting to drag, and I almost gave up on it. I'm glad I didn't because overall it was very good. In the long run, it was a better book than the first one.Warning - this second book also ends with the story unresolved. Only one major event takes place, setting up a good many things for the next book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An intense, dark and chilling story By Fiktshun SCHISM is dark, intense, intriguing, chilling. It is not a story for the faint of heart. It is at times harsh, brutal, shocking. It has aspects that mirror both the frightening reality of today’s world and the one of the past. It is an exceptionally well-crafted and well-written story that will give you a lot to think about and a lot to hope for. With a number of interesting and compelling characters, all with differing agendas, motivations, and abilities, it is guaranteed to keep you captivated. Its fascinating and intricate plot will keep you on edge, keep you guessing, keep your curiosity piqued. And its killer cliffhanger ending will leave you desperate for the next installment even while you’re nervous about what is to come. The schism that divided the Order between the more moderate Gifted and those wishing for a return to the old ways was only just the beginning of the end to their way of life. Patriarch Alberto di Tommaso’s radical and ruthless actions not only created an even bigger rift but served to put each and every one of the Gifted under a microscope. He single-handedly managed to rapidly destroy the fragile acceptance by the unGifted that took years to achieve. And he cared not one iota about the repercussions. Not when it was nearly impossible to kill a Patriarch. Not when he had an entire country under his control. Not when Gifted and unGifted alike quaked in fear of him. Not when he felt invincible even in the face of so many new enemies and potential threats.Jenna Black has created a remarkable story and series. It is complex and exciting and richly detailed. She combines elements of the paranormal with those of a political thriller. She incorporates spirituality and morality into this provocative and thought-provoking tale. She doesn’t soften the barbarity of her character’s actions, decisions, orders, to make for an easier, more pleasant read. She paints a violent and disturbing picture at times, but not one that is unnecessarily so. There are no holds barred. It is raw and real and completely unvarnished. It is an absolutely incredible sequel.A cruel, megalomaniac of a ruler, a country in turmoil, a people divided, a faith put to the test, unfair and unjust punishments meted out, fear running rampant, SCHISM promises to take you on one heck of a wild ride. And with unexpected alliances, dangerous manipulations, deadly schemes, powerful gifts, and characters to love and hate, it will be a ride you won’t want to see end.

Nice Entertainment Value on the Bundle By Michael Gallagher This series will get you thinking - the author does a great job of getting you inside the head (pun intended) of his characters, and what I found refreshing for this one was he doesn't try to overwhelm you with the future technology or situations in a post-apocalyptic world: we've all read SF where you want to call b.s. on a futuristic technology but in this case it's believable, and you can wrap your arms around it and understand it. The action scenes are fairly realistic, and you will find your pulse racing (mine did) at various times as you feel as if you are right there.I originally picked this up for just 99 cents vs. the regular price of each standalone book of $3.99 each or about $20 total. I certainly received a lot more than 99 cents worth of entertainment value. If you're looking for a change of pace from a lot of the sci-fi out there today, I'd recommend giving this series a shot.

Ray In a post-apocalyptic world, what’s left of humanity lives in a single domed city run by the shadowy Family. Periodically, the population is culled through the death lottery. All is running smoothly until Jerry Cardle, the man in charge of the lottery finds his name on the list. He discovers that a malevolent artificial intelligence has invaded the city’s systems, which could spell doom for everyone. With seven days left to live, Cardle must get to the bottom of whatever is going on, but he has to go entirely off the grid to do it.Code Breakers: Alpha by Colin F. Barnes is a well-written science fiction story of a dystopian future, complete with all the techie bells and whistles one might expect from the genre. In addition, the author does a good job of creating the characters who might inhabit such a dismal future.Great reading. Don't miss it!

BarnesI picked this one up on a special. It looked good and though I have to admit that it wasn't quite what I expected, there were a great number of other things that have caused me to put this on my love to hate list. I wasn't so much expecting a dystopic tale. Just having read John Shirley's A Song Called Youth which is touted as a cyberpunk story, but is more a thriller suspense with cyberpunk leanings. Code Breakers ABGD is more a dystopic tale wrapped around cyberpunk with elements ranging from those familiar to Mary Shelly's Frankenstein all the way to some of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Martian and Venusian series. There were certainly all the tropes for cyberpunk and those classic SFF adventures. A lot of good ideas wrapped in old tropes and unfortunate smatterings of grammatical challenges. The author appears to be British English and I try to keep that in mind. I've read a wide number of British authors recently and have been training my ear to certain quirky colloquialisms and idioms and even have discussed a few with those authors. With that in mind there is a pet peeve that I still feel a need to mention because it doesn't appear to be universally accepted as good English throughout the realm. This would be the usage of was sat, were sat, was stood and were stood. In all cases I'm used to was sitting, were sitting, was standing, were standing and those others are like fingernails on a chalkboard when I say them out loud. But those are pet peeves and have little if nothing to do with the stars I portion out. What I'm mostly concerned with is the omitting of words and the subsequent creation of incomplete sentences that leave the reader to fill in the blanks. Such as:Gerry detected a hint of disappointment Jachz's voice.Barnes, Colin F. (2015-11-12). Code Breakers Complete Series: Books 1-4 (Kindle Location 3205). Binary Books. Kindle Edition.Sasha had learned from Enna that Cheska a transcendent.Barnes, Colin F. (2015-11-12). Code Breakers Complete Series: Books 1-4 (Kindle Location 6463). Binary Books. Kindle Edition. If he could feel, he'd have felt exhilarated, such was the speed at which moved.Barnes, Colin F. (2015-11-12). Code Breakers Complete Series: Books 1-4 (Kindle Location 6788). Binary Books. Kindle Edition. These are just a random sampling and there are more, but it doesn't stop there because there are words munged together missing spaces between them and places where the t is missing from stay.or this next::Despite their lack of proper military training and experience, they displayed admirable brave.Barnes, Colin F. (2015-11-12). Code Breakers Complete Series: Books 1-4 (Kindle Location 6484). Binary Books. Kindle Edition.I can't help but think they displayed bravery rather than brave.Still I am forgiving even for those; but there is one spot where my bubble burst when the author was in the middle of a scene and the name of a character who was not in the scene was used in the place of another character and nearly spoiled the up and coming reveal later in that or the next chapter. In case the author cares to fix this it is in location 4250 of my kindle.Really, though, I enjoyed the series most of the way through and would have loved to give it 4 stars, and since I am giving it 3 stars that is the reason I'm being a bit hard on it. I think that any fan of cyberpunk and fantasy and perhaps those who have read John Shirley should enjoy this book and after stumbling over some of those errors and getting past most everything the first three stories make for a great set.As to the last book; there is no doubt that it finishes off the series and completes specific threads and further answers some lingering question, so it has a purpose. There were some moments when I almost put it down but for the most part I'm glad I finished it just to wrap up the lives of the few characters who made it through those first three books. Oh...and of course, some of those don't make it through the last book. There are lots of twists and turns in the plot to surprise the readers; though I have to admit sometimes the feeling of Deus ex Machina is there. It has all the tropes and earmarks found in most dystopic tales and I'll admit that dystopia's are not my favorite or strongest genre. For those who love those and enjoy the cyberpunk elements I think this would be a good addition to their library and looking at the number of 4 and 5 stars reviews there are a good number of people who must have more than enjoyed reading these novels. The author goes on my to read list for some future enjoyment.J.L. Dobias

101 of 103 people found the following review helpful. A bit confusing By Cocktails and Books Elfreda (Frey) has lived in a small village with her Aunt Frannie. Her aunt either ignores her or makes her life a living hell. But Frey's life begins to take a drastic turn when she uses magic she didn't know she had to start a vine growing from a thistle. Frey soon finds herself on the run from her village council after being sentence for practicing black magic. She relies on the kindness of an elf she meets on the run and the man who she's not sure she should trust as he tries to outrun the council that wants to make sure her powers stay bound.I felt as confused as Frey when I finished this one. While the story moves along from Frey's life in the village to her running and then meeting up with the ragtag group who help her, it's the last 30 or so pages, where I was lost trying to figure out why Frey's powers were bound, who her grandfather is and just what is going on between Frey and Chevelle. It's obvious something is going on and this group is there to help Frey, but you have no idea why.Frey was also a little hard to warm up to. When we first met her, there really wasn't anything about her that invested you into connecting with her. To be honest, I didn't really connect with her until she started reading the diary. Even then, it wasn't really connecting with her but to the writer of the diary. I will admit, that once Frey finished the diary and she understands who the writer is, I connected with her.We don't know a lot about all the others in the group trying to help Frey, with the exception of Steed and Ruby, and that sometimes took away from the story because I kept wondering why they were helping this girl.I'm hoping (since I already bought it) that questions that were left at the end of this story are answered. That said, it was a read that did keep me in engaged, for no other reason than to try and figure out just exactly what was going on.

It had promise, the premise had promise, and I'm an avid reader of fantasy and sci fi. Elf wrongly accused, flees ... sounds promising. However, after about a hundred pages of a heroine who seems to be the embodiment of teen angst and indecision, prone to blindly wafting along, hardly paying attention to anything and ever so often thinking to herself, _urgh, why did that happen?_ Grrr, he made me so angry._ ... and nevertheless *never* doing anything of her own initiative, I got to the point where I just couldn't take it. If the hero from whose perspective the book is written cares so little, then why should I care anymore? I finally skipped to the last few pages to see if the conclusion would make it worth my while to read the second half of the book and ... it didn't. Honestly, a book where I couldn't care less about any of the characters and where I wanted to throttle the angsty, self-absorbed little elf heroine.Oh, and for the editors: the past tense of "lie" (as in "lie down") is "lay."

114 of 121 people found the following review helpful. Good cover, bad book By Donyae Do not waste your time on this book. It is standard average outcast girl finds out she's something special drivel. And it's not even well written. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy simple novels. I like just getting caught up in a story and enjoying it but there was nothing here to enjoy.Frey, the main character in this tale is whiny at best. She spends the entire book complaining. Well complaining or just fainting. Really, I have no idea how she gets anything done, she's unconscious for most of the book. The do hint at and later explain that she's been "bound" from magic and her memories and that's why she is pretty much useless however, that doesn't really cover all of the whining and stupidity that we have to put up with to get to the end of the book. After reading this I decided to save myself the torture and skip the second book. I found that I didn't care at all about a single person the book presented or what happened to them. Not a good read. Avoid.

Loved the pros and cons when rating the Hotels & Casinos. You gave a lot of information about the Grand Canyon. It almost seemed like you should devote a book to it. I understand that it would be almost impossible to cover everything, but other Hotels and Casinos outside of The Strip and Downtown Las Vegas deserve a little more space in your book as do some more of the off property restaurants. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a more in-dept look at Vegas the first or next time they travel to Sin City.

I continued to buy each episode because I really enjoyed the overall story development and characters. Having said that, I will never buy another book by this author. I can live with an episode for $2.99 that is close to 100 pages, but when the last 20-25 pages for every episode has been a rehashing of a list of character abilities its makes me feel like my pocketbook is being gouged.. And what what makes that feeling even worse is when the character develops an ability it is thoroughly detailed at that time in the episode and then rehashed at the end of the episode. Jackson continues to gouge for "Jackson's" By Bd I stopped buying the books from this author because he figured out a way to gouge his readership for money by offering each chapter for 2.99 and like others have said there are multiple pages of character sheet. This is one of the most despicable and blatant things I have seen any author do and I now will not buy anything this guy writes and publishes.Hope he's happy cause he violated the trust of his readership and I am recommending everyone stop buying his stuff.

I still enjoy the series but the shortness of the books, supposedly 99 pages, which would not be to bad, but the last 25 pages being his character sheet, again, This will be my last purchase for this author, 74 pages of story and a quick reprint of his character sheet. In his last two books the 50 pages of character sheet with only minimal changes does not make the story worth what he is charging for it.

This stunning nature alphabet book explores the fascinating ecosystem of the Pacific West Coast — a magnificent area that combines an ancient rainforest, a rugged beach and a vast, open ocean, and where whales, bears, wolves, eagles and a rich variety of marine species thrive in an interconnected web of life. Author Deborah Hodge has spent more than forty years on the west coast, frequently visiting the Pacific Rim region, and she knows it intimately. From A to Z she describes in vivid language the rainforest, ocean and beach, and a great variety of animals that a child might see walking along the shore — from tiny sea jellies to inquisitive sandpipers to leaping orcas. Illustrator Karen Reczuch brings her remarkable talent to the book, and has created image after image that is simply breathtaking. The text and art have been carefully checked for scientific accuracy. The book also includes a note about the Pacific West Coast and suggestions for exploring the region and further reading.

The illustrations are amazing and there is a bit of detail in the words about each natural thing shared. For us it was fun to explore the West Coast from the East Coast. Every time I read it my daughter tells me how much she likes it. It is just a fun book and we hope to actually go see some of the places mentioned in the book. Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own.

Betrayal casts long shadows – none know this better than Brice Serholm. As a decorated general in the kingdom's elite Blade Knights, Brice had to overcome the taint of treason and betrayal to attain his rank. When Brice and a force of Knights are sent on a mission to investigate claims of rebellion in one of Avidar's provinces, their ship is magically attacked, and the resulting investigation tests every oath Brice swore before his king. Meanwhile, an inhuman infant escapes the capital's Slave-Hold, the king's mistress comes into possession of a unique dagger, and Del'Ahrid, the king's most trusted First Advisor, begins to question everything he built his honour and life upon. Events are in motion that will test every man, woman and child – and a conflict is coming that will shake the kingdom to its very foundations. So begins the Mahaelian Chronicle.

Betrayal's Shadow (Mahaelian Chronicle Book 1), by Dave De Burgh

Review "Dave-Brendon de Burgh destroys the notion that epic fantasy's moment of innovation began and ended with George R.R. Martin. Betrayal's Shadow is smart, powerfully original fiction that echoes our best writers while forging ahead with its own voice. Here's hoping it attracts the massive audience it deserves." - Zachary Jernigan, author of 'No Return' and 'Shower of Stones'."Reminiscent of the Malazan world in terms of its depth and complexity." - John Gwynne, author of 'Malice', 'Valour', and 'Ruin'.

About the Author Dave de Burgh wanted to be an artist and speak French, but Fate saved him and pointed him in the direction of writing. He's a bookseller, co-parent to three wonderful Pekingese 'kids', reads Speculative Fiction voraciously, and is the luckiest guy in the world because he has a blonde, blue-eyed woman in his life who supports his need to write and be crazy. He lives in Pretoria, South Africa, and when he's not writing he's probably secretly laughing at cognitively challenged bookstore-customers. He's on Blogger, Twitter, Wordpress, Facebook and Instagram.

By Monique Snyman Betrayal’s Shadow by Dave-Brendon de Burgh is a complex book that will ship readers away into a fantasy world where they’ll be entertained from cover to cover. There are some fascinating characters that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat, some beautiful descriptions, and an intriguing plotline that’ll keep you guessing what’s coming next. De Burgh’s world-building skills are also put to the test, seeing as Betrayal’s Shadow is high fantasy, but he surpasses expectations with ease. What’s more is that this is an old-school type of magical fantasy. I mean, who doesn’t love warriors with swords and ships and all kinds of awesome magic? Sure, I like modern fantasy too, but sometimes a good ol’ fashioned high fantasy novel is just what the doctor ordered and I’m fairly certain that I’m not alone in that sentiment. As far as debut novels are concerned, Betrayal’s Shadow shows only the tip of De Burgh’s hidden talent. I’d like to see where he goes from here …Of course, no good deed goes unpunished and I feel it’s important to point out that I wasn’t keen on the editing of the book. There were too many adverbs being thrown around and way too many hyphens for my liking. Other than that though, I really enjoyed Betrayal’s Shadow and I’m excited to hear what’ll happen next in this awesome world he’s created.Readers that enjoy high fantasy, where magic is in full supply and where action is never far behind, will enjoy the introductory novel to the Mahaelian Chronicles. Keep your eyes on Dave-Brendon de Burgh; he’s got a whole arsenal of awesome talent still waiting to be tapped into. You’ll see …

Not only are locals making waves overseas, but we can now celebrate yet another fantasy author to make his debut. Betrayal’s Shadow is book one of Pretoria-based Dave-Brendon de Burgh’s Mahaelian Chronicles. In addition to this, he has also released a prequel short story, A Song of Sacrifice, which is available electronically.Much like Steven Erikson’s epics, which De Burgh cites as among his influences, the story is told by a large cast of assorted characters. We are introduced to High General Brice Serholm; the Blade Knight Alun; the royal courtesan Seira; the Elvayn Khyber; scheming mastermind Cobinian; King Jarlath, who possesses near godlike powers – but at a price; and Del’Ahrid, an ambitious first advisor to the king.Throw all these folks together and you have the ingredients for a suitably violent, intrigue-soaked plot. All characters have ambitions and secrets, which lead them into conflict as a bigger, ages-old saga plays itself out.De Burgh throws readers right into the thick of things – a quality I appreciate, considering the fantasy genre’s tendency to indulge in exposition. Readers are faced with events that transpire after a war between humans and an elf-like, magic-wielding race known as the Elvayn. The latter have been reduced to slave status, but King Jarlath has plans for them, which may not be to the liking of those who prefer the status quo.Battle-scarred Alun and young Khyber must both learn to work with their powers, for each has a role to play, and greater threat to face when the zombie-esque Reavers make their first appearance. For those who’d like a little back story, do pick up the prequel, which will help clarify events occurring in book one. While De Burgh is definitely a South African voice in fantasy to keep an eye on, both novel and prequel could have benefitted from more stringent editing, not only to catch a number typos, but perhaps also to develop some of the characters further. At times I felt his writing flowed a bit too fast, which begged for deeper insights into characters’ motivations, especially with the large cast in this book. That being said, this is still a worthy read, which should appeal to those who enjoy epic fantasy with a high body count, mounting tension and a fascinating setting.

By Amvri Engelbrecht Firstly - I am a reader - not a writer and I give this review as from my point of view/reading. The Artwork on the book is exceptionally well fitted and of the best. The Title and Art immediately attracts one's eye and it seems intriguing and one cannot help been drawn to it completely. The book is to my experience of International standard!!!! I liked every moment of reading it. Dave does have a wonderful vivid imagination and it is a fantastic, with depth, marvellous, quick paced most adventurous lovely "journey" ... and in such an unknown world. What was great for me was that I as a reader got a chance to learn and experience the different characters, even managed to grow a bond and/or identifying with some of them (thanks for not killing the characters before that Dave ;). A reader can actually "feel" and experience the living entities and that specific timeline (unknown). I found it difficult to put the book down at times. The many different worlds, different living... breathing entities, different cultures, rules, loyalties, the magic's, the earlier magic's, the wielding and singing of it by an Elvayn.... The characters Brice, Khyber, Del'Adrid, Seira, Jarlath (the King), Alun, Alondra etc. that Dave writes about are amazing - my curiosity are very much peaked by the woman Amalia! I've been immediately caught up and intrigued by Dave's book. The curiosity I have about most of the character's journey's in the next books makes it almost impossible to wait for the second book of the trilogy. I personally would love to see stronger female characters or some of the current ones to grow much stronger. "But that is me" Dave is becoming who he always dreamed to be and we are immensely proud of him and his blue-eyed, blonde person that stands by his side!! The RISE and RISE of Dave-Brendon De Burgh!!!!

These books just keep getting better. I love Ruth Ann Nordin's western and regency romance books, but she is also great with fantasy. Ann and Hathor are so wonderful together, and William is nothing but a huge pain. I am fascinated with her story of Atlantis. I think you will enjoy this book. Happy reading!
