The Farmer's Wife – the story of how a woman retrieves an apple from a hole in the ground – is one of the many Sufi tales for children. For over a thousand years it has entertained young people who join in the chant of this cumulative tale and, at the same time, learn its valuable lessons about the nature of problem solving and discovery. For more than 30 years Idries Shah's collections of Teaching-Stories and narratives from the Sufi tradition have captivated the hearts and minds of people from all walks of life. Shah selected the majority of these tales from oral sources. They are repeated in homes, courts and caravanserais throughout the Middle East and Central Asia.

PreS-Gr 2-While the folk art illustrations are boldly attractive, this cumulative tale falls short of the mark. While picking apples, a farmer's wife drops one down a hole in the ground. She asks a bird to get it for her, but the bird refuses. She asks a cat to jump at the bird so it will retrieve the fruit, but it refuses. She continues to seek help to no avail. Finally, she returns to the bird, who sets off the sequence of events readers have been waiting for. Oddly, though, it is the wind that finally blows the apple out of the hole. This story lacks the simple, effective rhythm of tales such as "The Old Woman and Her Pig." The striking pictures of golden hills, brilliant blue skies, and the woman's Middle Eastern dress are the highlight here.-Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA

Review "Enjoy ... new bright collections featuring different illustrators ... fine stories!" -- REVIEWER'S CHOICE, The Children's Bookwatch "Its pleasantly repetitive language makes it an ideal tool for developing reading readiness and beginning reading skills." -- Denise Nessel, Ph.D., National Urban Alliance for Effective Education "These stories ... help in the development of children's cognitive abilities." -- Robert Ornstein, Ph.D.
From the Publisher Beautifully illustrated in stunning color, this award-winning series of large-format children's books by Idries Shah presents tales from a rich tradition of storytelling. All books were well reviewed and one received a National Parenting Publications Honors Award.
For thousands of years all over the Middle East and Central Asia children have been entertained and taught by these stories and have continued to tell them in adult life. Until his death in 1996, Shah collected hundreds of such stories and adapted them to contemporary Western culture. His adult books continue to attract millions of readers from all over the world.
Sufi tradition affirms that there is a continuum of the children's story, the entertainment story, and the teaching story. A story can help young children deal with difficult situations and give them something to hold on to. Adults can at the same time understand it on a more spiritual level. Through repeated readings of this rich body of oral and written material both children and adults can now learn to develop the capacity to be more flexible, as well as get fresh insights into many things about themselves and about life.

By A Customer This is a new twist on the types of stories that kids love to read and hear over and over. It begins with a lady making a simple request...she just wants her apple. The chain of events that results though, teaches cause and effect in a fun way. What really makes the book a lasting treasure is the art work. We found ourselves going through the book both from front to back and back to front just exploring the colorful and playful art. I highly recommend this book for kids or even adults who like the playful prose and pictures. Two thumbs up for Mary Rose Santiago and Idries Shah. I look forward to seeing more of their works.

May I gently suggest that it was reviewed in haste? This book is a tour de force in higher order thinking, randomness and unforeseen outcomes.A story for children at first glance that is actually a blueprint.Children get this story. Why can not some adults even begin to scratch the surface of what is available here?Let your child decide! Buy this book for them, read it, ask questions as to what is occuring in the tale. Then watch and listen to your child. You may be surprised at the insights of your youngster!

Not just that if you keep at something you might persevere. But also that our ultimate success often comes by way something or someone outside ourselves - when we least expect it!
