She couldn't wait to get the next book when she was finished with one... Which thrilled me... Because she isn't one to just sit and read unless she really loves the book.. So to find a whole series was great!!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Witchy good time! By Kathryn Magick Beneath the Moonlight is the third in an anthology called Southern Haunts:Granny Wise was a very well written story, I liked the Granny Wise character and was interested to learn more about the legend of Granny Wise. I liked that the couple that sought Granny’s help were different in the beginning vs the end. I thought the husband was going to be a full on evil man but Granny was able to find good in him.Live Big is a great story that works as a psychological thriller or a supernatural story. The one complaint that I had about this story is that it didn’t feel like a witch story as much as a possessed doll or mad gone insane story. The Priestess’ Trunk was not what I expected, in a very good way. The story is about a boy named Jamie who just got a new stepmom and a new house, during the time where he looks around the house he finds a locked door that he becomes obsessed with and inside is a trunk. I found this story to be well-written and was very impressed with it.The Witch of Honey, Kudzu, and Coyotes I liked that there were stories that connected to each other. The characters were well written and I loved that the witch in it toyed with the narrator. I also liked the use of coyotes as companions for witches, it was a bold choice that seemed to fit.The Untold Tale of Wiccademous, I really liked this one, from the legend of Isabel and her friend Odine to the twist at the very end of the story. The main narrator seemed to follow the scary movie trope that when someone tells you not to go into the woods the first thing you do is to go into the woods.Vengeance is about a woman who has been able to speak to ghosts all her life, and she’s telling the story of the witch. Both characters were awesome and I hope there’s a sequel for this one.The Jar, I found this one fun and would make a great horror film, it’s about a boyfriend and girlfriend going on a date and ghost-hunting until things turn weird. Overall I found it a fun read and would like to read a sequel for this one as well.La Voyante, I really liked this story what I liked about it was the main character Cass was a person that I could relate to in the beginning. I wondered what she was going to write for the end of her story and when it ended it did not disappoint.Cursed was a wonderful period piece with a bunch of twists and gory deaths, I enjoyed this one very much.Secrets of the Heart, was fun as it starts with a tense situation and ends with a bang. I liked the character Colleen and felt bad for her when her husband abandoned her. None of the other character were good people and I think that was what the author was going for and it worked well.Tell Me Where He Lies, I did not feel bad for Max at all and was glad when he got what he deserved. The Shadows, that was a really sad story, no one in this story had a happy ending, I loved the cursed plantation that carried on to an asylum. It was really well-written that I felt bad for all the characters in the story.Docta Bones, it was an ok story it wasn’t my favorite as I felt it was a little hard to read but it was good.I liked In the Dark, it felt different from the other stories and I liked that it was about a witch and her apprentice in multiple parts. The Apartment House, what was great about this one was that there was a story sectioned into apartments and the killings are based on the person’s interest. I found Apartment 2 the most disturbing as we watch the lady commit suicide without wanting to. I also liked that the killer got his in the end.Without Xango There Is No Oxalla, what was great about this story was that it was about Spanish witches seeking revenge and I liked that it was different from the other stories in the series but fit anyway. The Bone Picker Witch, this story was wonderful it was filled with Native American lore and had the evilest character I read in this series. I felt so bad for Fala and her child and glad she got revenge on Mitchell.Dances With Witches I liked the story, it followed the theme of this series with revenge. Jethro is a killer that tangled with the wrong woman, and paid the price for it. Overall I enjoyed reading this story and look forward to more from the author.Overall I really enjoyed the collection of stories and loved the first two and found this to be a worthy book in the series. I would have liked more stories on different witchcraft besides voodoo but I still enjoyed the whole a lot.

Andrew Cooper Jr Southern Haunts 3: Magick beneath the Moonlight delivers a delectable range of witch-tastic events and images, successfully indulging fantasies of magical power and a fetish for the history of things Weird. Leaving the most familiar questions about whether so-and-so is or isn’t a witch in the background, and saving the typical witch-hunts for Yankee territory, the stories in Southern Haunts presume the existence of magic and focus on the power’s whats and whens. From these whats and whens readers get a sense of a where, the American South, which is both horrific and mystical. As a result, this collection of stories stands apart from typical witch-horror while affirming, in the Southern Gothic tradition, that regular old “realistic” storytelling doesn’t quite get one of the U.S.’s most culturally diverse and historically troubled regions. While I’m conflating all the mystic goings-on in Southern Haunts 3 as witchery, the collection’s editors and authors are careful to distinguish among types of magic and related spiritual traditions, naming the book’s primary whats distinctly as voodoo, hoodoo, and witchcraft. “The Apartment House,” for instance, provides a series of bizarre and violent tableaux—death by books is my favorite, but a detailed flaying deserves mention—and ties them together with a lesson on the laws for practicing voodoo the right way. In “La Voyante,” a knowing character explains to a writer looking for a new creative outlet that voodoo isn’t the only game in town: “No, we talkin’ ’bout Hoodoo. Between the ‘hoo’ an’ the ‘voo,’ there’s a worl’ of difference… though we do tend t’ use a bit of both in these parts.” Often gesturing toward the diasporic and creolized origins of so-called “pagan” spiritualities tied to hoodoo and voodoo, the stories in Southern Haunts 3 provide a nuanced enough view to add an S to the K in the subtitle, making it a less elegant MagickS beneath the Moonlight (not a suggestion—the actual title is much better!). Indeed, as the main character of “In the Dark” learns, some magic needs to be practiced only in the day, so “moonlight” isn’t even a consistent feature of proper witchery. Magic refuses easy limits, and while it can be as elegant as the kindly title character of “Granny Wise,” it can also be as ugly as characters’ habits in “Dances with Witches.” The collection tells us that all these magics might fit in a book, and they all show up in the South, but they won’t all fit in a proverbial box. The box mentioned in the title “The Priestess’s Trunk,” then, provides an apt metaphor: you might try to contain and understand mystical forces, but magic will always find a way to push beyond easy categories and simple expectations.Despite the diversity of magical types in Southern Haunts 3, magical power almost always serves one end: payback. While the book draws its power from many veins, it directs that power primarily toward fulfilling fantasies of justice and vengeance. The first tale, “Granny Wise,” based on a historical figure, sets the mold: a witch serves locals as a healer, but the price of her services includes righting wrongs. In most tales that follow, witchcraft, as a means for payback, either doles out a kind of cosmic justice against evildoers (as, for example, in “Live Big”) or serves as means for a witch to get some vengeance on (as in “Vengeance,” “The Jar,” “Tell Me Where He Lies,” and “Without Xango there is No Oxalla”). The most salient motive for mystical vengeance in Southern Haunts 3 relates to the South’s legacies of racism, slavery, and lynching. In “The Untold Tale of Wiccademous,” searching for the story behind cursed woods leads the would-be storyteller into a cosmic trap forged from these legacies. “Cursed,” set in the 1920s, takes a more direct look at magic providing justice for a lynching that earthly courts would ignore, and “The Shadows” answers a nineteenth-century slave-master’s murder of an innocent man with a curse that takes “life for a life.” While magical means of achieving racial justice help to advance the book’s Southern identity, magic also serves as an equalizer for women who suffer under the arbitrary rule of despicable men. The mystic in “Secrets of the Heart” learns that her husband’s religious hypocrisy too easily stands in the way of his devotion to her, a betrayal she does not suffer lightly; likewise, when a violent husband crosses “The Bone Picker Witch,” he opens the door for some of the book’s nastiest moments. In most cases, mystical vengeance is overwhelming and horrific, but the justification that goes with it makes rooting for magical victory a source of grim pleasure. While the fantasy of supernatural justice is fun to indulge, it recurs a little too often within the selection of tales, and the stories that rely on it less end up being my favorites in the book. “The Witch of Honey, Kudzu, and Coyotes” shrouds its title figure in mystery, making her more like a force of nature than a person practicing a secret art. Going further with an interest in storytelling that runs through “The Untold Tale of Wiccademous” and several other tales in Southern Haunts 3, “The Witch of Honey, Kudzu, and Coyotes” opens with an interrupted story that persists in the narrator’s imagination “like a hollow, unformed thing” alongside “a boy missing from everyone’s memory.” Broken stories and memory gaps make magic powerful enough to reshape thought and perception, reweaving reality’s fabric; as a result, this tale can explore fresh and compelling territory. Likewise, “In the Dark” focuses on the perils of exploring the unknown. A bit rambling in structure, this tale brings its unwise protagonist in contact with strange verse, talking birds, and a host of disturbing images—my favorite is a buck with centipedes pouring from its mouth—that again signal a link between magic and distorted perception that can change the rules for what a story can do. Fans of more transgressive and gruesome horror fiction will likely count “In the Dark” and “The Bone Picker Witch” as favorites along with “Docta Bones,” in which the title character inverts Granny Wise’s benevolence by requiring much harsher payment for the gods’ services, and “Dances with Witches,” which places a human appetite for evil in parallel with a bewitched landscape’s. Chilling acts and images become the main products of witchery: questions of justice and the natural order become secondary to experiencing the full horror of the weird.A volume about magic and the South invites thinking about cultural and regional history, and with stories set in (or focused on rediscovering) the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries, Southern Haunts 3 does a great job of putting together views of the past. As a Southerner, I wonder about the present. Where is witchcraft in the contemporary South? How do hoodoo and voodoo continue to inform life not just in old New Orleans, but also present-day Atlanta, Richmond, and cities in between with “modern” feels that contrast with the antiquarian interests that dominate this book? The book covers solid ground, but by sticking mainly to historical subjects, it might miss some opportunities for innovation. The opportunities included, however, add up to a satisfying read. Moody, atmospheric, and drenched in regional detail, Southern Haunts 3 gives readers an entryway to the South’s mystic history, places and times to explore with equal amounts of dread and delight.

Befriended by a mysterious boy in the woods soon after, however, Liesel finds herself falling in love with the one person in the world who can save her from that awful end or doom her to it. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 By Carmen R I really liked this book - the author kept me guessing (though I thought I had it figured out and was right about parts). There were a few parts where I was worried what the next bit would bring (that it would be a deal breaker) but she never falls into any of those traps - overall, minus a very small number of jumps in time where it took me a sentence or two to catch up, it was clearly narrated and edited. I think my biggest beef could be that the climax was, for me, not as suspenseful or engaging as I hoped. However, I still liked the book and think it's very solid. And it was engaging, it just didn't ramp up like I hoped for towards the very end. Still, satisfying book with a satisfying conclusion. I'm looking forward to Fichter's next book in my queue!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Compelling Novel with Red and Her Wolf By Lexar (What are these new review questions that Amazon is asking? Me likey--they're actually meaningful. Though I've always wondered where those responses go.)I really, really enjoyed this Riding Hood retelling. I thought it was fresh, compelling, and well-written while still utilizing the fairy tale. Of course, given the nature of Riding Hood retellings, most have Red and the Wolf get together (which is actually quite interesting, when you stop to think about it. Of all things, we choose the wolf.) But I think the plot had as many twists as it really could. And while I anticipated a happy ending, I wasn't certain of it, which is a particular strength. And a big part of it was what would constitute the happy ending--just them getting together, or them actually achieving their goal?I'd say the mood is predominantly dark, but also suspenseful with enough hopeful to get you through it without wanting to break down. Liesel goes through a lot of awful things (Worst Father of the Year award goes to...) but comes out of it strong and determined. I wasn't always a fan of the way she treated the male lead (whose name escapes me at the moment) but I was rooting for them. The pace is steady. There are slower, quieter moments between the big twists, so the pacing helps the novel in all the right ways. I was never bored, but I wasn't overwhelmed either. But I still stayed up all night to finish the book because it was just that good. Most of the characters are developed, and the main characters are relatively complex. More could've been done, but what's there works. Some of the motivations and actions of the minor characters needs more development, but I was happy with how the people I cared about turned out.Highly recommended, and a spectacular addition to the fairy tale retelling world!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. as I love Beauty and the Beast By Shannon Darr I was first introduced to Brittany Fichter's writing when I read "Before Beauty" and, as I love Beauty and the Beast, I fell in love with her writing and can't wait for more. I enjoyed reading Girl in the Red Hood, but not as much as Before Beauty, but I'm chalking that up to my overall feelings about Little Red Riding Hood and not the writing and the story itself since I still enjoyed reading the book. The format of the book made reading it a little difficult at times (I bought the hard copy) and the pacing slowed down a bit too much near the end, but the message in the story about finding peace with oneself is inspirational and I would (and have) recommend this book to as many people as I possibly can.You can watch my further thoughts on this book by going to SenshiReviews on YouTube and clicking on my Monday Reads 3/28 video where I ramble on a bit more about this book and a few others. Everyone have a wonderful day now!

First came the plague. A genetically engineered virus that brought civilization crashing down, while turning its victims into mindless carnivores. We fought. Retreated. Died. Lived. Advanced. Started rebuilding the United States. The scout teams went out, seeing what was left of the world, moving far ahead of the Army, seeking survivors, checking infrastructure, salvaging precious relics of our history. Then the second plague, loosed by a dictator in a desperate bid for power and control, and the cycle repeated itself, this time with even smaller numbers. Still, we held on, and rebuilt again, the United States reduced to a few million people living in Upstate New York and Lower New England. I had thought we were done, hung up the weapons and settle down to farming and trading, but for a soldier, that itch never goes away. The adventure just around the next corner, the thrill of combat and defeating your enemies, the call of the unknown. So I went out, one more time. ~ Command Sergeant Major (R) Nicholas Agostine, US Army Reserves Brevet Colonel, US Army Stillwater Island, Stillwater, NY Year 36

His knowledge of military training and tactics makes this another great page turner By Amazon Customer Out of all the books Holmes has written, this is by far the most recent one that I have bought. That being said, his writing is very captivating. His knowledge of military training and tactics makes this another great page turner.

This one shows what happens when there are fewer zombies, less free stuff laying around and more real civilization coming back. And to spoil the ending, which civilization did you want to come back? Well our Hero knows, and is always true to his feelings. So if you are not burnt out on Zombies, if you liked the earlier books, and you want a quick read for X-mass that does not have elves, Then rock this book back and hope for goodies from Santa like a K-Bar Crowbar Combo with matching holster, and a clean pair of undies. The things you need to get you through the day in the life of the Zombie Killers, IST One Ambush. That and our hero needs his wife to keep him on his toes.

Once again the 1st Irregular Scout Team is called upon to go to the limits of endurance for any human being. John does not pull any punches with his depiction of combat, good guys and bad guys die. A bullet does not choose between good and evil. In war people die and that is the plain truth of the matter. No one can change this and John lays it out in all of its ugliness. I urge all who are reading this review trying to decide whether or not to purchase the book to buy it. It is worth far more than the minimal price the author is asking. You will not be disappointed.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A complex subject beautifully addressed By Dev Ramcharan Building and sustaining business-relevant Project Management Offices can be a minefield for business leaders. The average life expectancy for a PMO is reputed to be 2 years. There are good reasons for this, all of which have as their theme a significant mismatch between the entities constructed and the needs of the organizations in which they are built. Most PMO leads are hungry for guidance and ideas from thought leaders in the profession. How do you start a PMO? How do you ensure adoption and use of the PMO's services and resources? What are the varieties of models available and how do you match your organization and its specific needs to the right model? How do you demonstrate a solid ROI for your PMO? These and many other questions are beautifully, simply and logically addressed by Dr. Karkukly in this book. I am a practitioner who has been a PMO leader in a variety of sectors (Private and Public) for over 20 years. I've found this book to be exceptional. I wish it had been available 20 years ago when I started learning the ropes, painfully and slowly, on my own. I highly recommend this text to anyone who wants to understand the world of Project Management Offices better.

A missing eye.A broken wing.A stolen country.

The last job didn't end well.

Years go by, and scars fade, but memories only fester. For the animals of the Captain's company, survival has meant keeping a low profile, building a new life, and trying to forget the war they lost. But now the Captain's whiskers are twitching at the idea of evening the score.

PRAISE FOR "THE BUILDERS"

"A living, breathing world of vivid, winsome characters hellbent on their blaze of glory and as unforgiving as a runaway train carrying all your friends over a cliff. I haven't cared about animals this much since Watership Down." Delilah S. Dawson, author of "Hit" and "Wicked as They Come"

"Nobody does dark like Polansky. "The Builders" is "Redwall" meets "Unforgiven," combining the endearing wit of Disney's Robin Hood with all the grit and violence of a spaghetti western." Myke Cole, author of the Shadow Ops series

"If Sam Peckinpah and Brian Jacques had a strange peyote ritual and shared a collective dream, it might look something liek this. Brutish, nasty, short much like life Polansky's "The Builders" is also funny, exciting, and extremely original. "The Wild Bunch" meets "Watership Down."" John Hornor Jacobs, author of "The Incorruptibles""

The Builders, by Daniel Polansky

Review

"Polansky employs a style that’s knowing and sly, a little tongue-in-cheek but deadly serious; it’s as though Brian Jacques and Quentin Tarantino went drinking one night... a violently compelling story." - Publishers Weekly

"Bawdy and sometimes bleak, but most outrageous." - Locus

"Bloody and dark... This is a story of loyalty, trust, backstabbing, betrayal and obsession and how, ultimately, it’s always easier to tear things down than it is to create. The Builders is a story of gang warfare but as you’ve never read gang warfare before. 5/5" - Geek Syndicate

About the Author Author of the critically-acclaimed Low Town series, Daniel Polansky was born in Baltimore in 1984. He was living in Brooklyn when he wrote this, but by the time you read it he might be somewhere else.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The love child of Redwall and Unforgiven, The Builders is glorious! By Matthew Summers Polansky, you magnificent bastard.I have just finished The Builders, and I am stunned.I really don't even know where to begin.Do I rave about how you took a genre (dark fantasy) and made it your own with this story? Or do I wax lyrical about your off the hook action sequences amidst a story that is essentially about anthropomorphic animals and their revenge? Or perhaps I can comment about your incorporation of weird western elements into the overall plot?Ah bugger it... I will just cut to the chase. The Builders is THE story of the year so far.Brutal, gut wrenching, and darkly humorous with a dash of messed up, The Builders sets the bar extremely high in telling the tale of the Captain and his merry (as in they can, and will, bust you in the nuts if you cross them) band as they seek revenge on those who betrayed them many years ago. And the plot... damn it is good! Starting out at a rocket pace that never slows, the reader is brought up to speed via chapters that aren't linear in nature. This structure works extremely well, giving an insight into past events that eventually lead to the night where the Captain and his friends finally seek their revenge. And the characters... wow. Depicted in a way that only Polansky could pull off, the Captain (mouse) and his group (including a stout, salamander, and badger) ooze snark and dark charisma in spades. Each has their own issues, quirks and demons, and each brings something different to the story. I fell head over heels in love with them all, and their interaction and discourse with each other had me in fits of laughter at times. Another magical thing about them was the fact that whilst they all have human-like qualities and emotions they still retained some of their animalistic instinct and nature. I never thought I could be moved so much by a ragtag group of animals, but this bunch burrowed their way into my heart and made themselves at home. And as the story unfolded and things became clearer I was blown away by the simple yet intricate way Polansky had guided me there. Be prepared for feels amidst the incredible violence... lots and lots of feels. This novella utterly brilliant. It is Redwall. It is Watership Down. It is the Dirty Dozen. It is Unforgiven and True Grit. It is all of them, and more.It is The Builders.A different and masterful tale that epitomises everything I love about this genre, The Builders is highly recommended for anyone (human and animal) with a beating heart!5 out of 5 stars.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wow! That was awesome! By Johann Thorsson It tells the story of a group of not-so-cute woodland animals seeking revenge. It starts with the familiar “getting the gang back together” scenario and then we watch as they head out to seek revenge for something that happened 5 years before. This is a gritty story, the animals smoke and carry guns that they clearly know how to use. They have scars from past skirmishes and betrayals and indeed we know that within Captain’s group there is still at least one traitor. The Captain is just a mouse, but somehow manages to be the scariest character among a group of scary animals. Every scene with him is tense, masterfully written. He is the Clint Eastwood of small rodents. The WritingThe writing is excellent. I had expected this book, a novella, to be just a bit of silly fun, but found instead a book by a writer who treats the characters with respect. There are funny moments in the book, but the characters are never to be laughed at.Here is a passage where we see the badger, Barley, doing a bit of what he does best; killing with a big rotating gun."And in the meantime Barley continued his work, rat-tat-tat, rat-tat-tat. And to find an equal to his tally, to do that bloody arithmetic—if one was inclined to do so, if one’s mind ran in that sort of direction—one would have needed to compare him against disease, and time, and heartbreak."There are quite a few passages like that, passages that made me realize that I had underestimated the quality of writing that would found be in a story about anthropomorphized animals fighting other animals. I will not underestimate Mr. Polansky again. It’s been a long time since I read anything with so many scenes that were just… cool. The Builders is a fantastic book. It should be given to teenagers that say that books are boring to show them that no, books are not boring. Books, as The Builders show us, are awesome.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A mouse, a stoat, a possum, a salamander, a badger, a mole, and an owl walk into a bar… By H. P. …And from that one-note joke comes a pretty damn fine novella. The Captain—a scowling, one-eyed mouse—and his crew lost a civil war, a country, an eye, and a wing. Now the Captain is getting the team—The Builders—back together for a little revenge. You’ll note that that doesn’t have much to do with the fact that the characters are all (all, no humans to be seen) animals. The animal nature of the characters (the bad guys are animals too, a skunk, a cat, a fox, and a rattle snake, with rats for mooks) informs their abilities and attributes but otherwise largely irrelevant. It’s not much more than an excuse to have a salamander gunslinger, badger muscle, a stoat assassin, and a possum sniper. Not that I will complain, mind you. Polansky doesn’t get cutesy with it and adds what it will when available. There is a solid yarn underneath. The setting is evocative of civil war Mexico. Polansky borrows heavily from the tropes of heist stories. He stays spare in his writing, with extremely short chapters and no unnecessary narration. A certain amount of narrative distance introduced works because the work is very short and it avoids any need to hide the ball regarding the plot twists (an impressive number for a novella). Much like Miles Cameron (I read The Dread Wyrm directly before The Builders), Polansky is skilled at landing a wham line. It’s dark and bloody and a whole hell of a lot of fun.Disclosure: I solicited and received an advance copy of The Builders from the publisher, Tor.com.

Prepper Tale Reaches New Heights By Yan Ross Just when you think you've seen (and read) it all, Bobby Andrews comes up with a new challenge for the cast of characters!I was curious to find out what happens after the first trilogy, and now I'm even more firmly hooked on this adventure. This time, Andrews has entered new territory on what can happen and how to prepare and respond. You can read this one first, or build on the first three installments (in the omnibus version). You won't be disappointed!

My only criticism is that at a hundred fifteen pages at a time (this is #4) the story is a bit hard to keep up with in the months between installments.I would prefer to read the story and be done with it.I never cared much for serials. That behind said, the story is still hugely enjoyable.

How could you do that to me!!!!???? Not the best survival book I've read, but it does rank right up there at the top. Good job Bobby Andrews. I will continue to read this series but I hope they don't all end like this one did.

This book may have a lot of good information, but it is not well written By RoofingPrincess This book may have a lot of good information, but it is not well written, which became so off-putting that I abandoned trying to read it. It reads as if it were written by a non-native speaker of English, with many awkward phrases and sentence constructions.

By Ylona This guide to Italy is also excellent - it covers every region of Italy, and provides a lot of detail on food establishments, which is something most travelers are interested in. There is a handy pull out map of Rome, and the usual information on hikes, museums, and other activities. If you plan on spending more than a couple days in a particular area, I recommend getting an additional guide for that locale, which will provide more in-depth coverage. This guide is great for short visits.

Rome, Venice and Florence are some of the places that were featured in this book. It has the some pictures inside which introduces some of the tourist spot in these places. And it will really entice you more in dreaming to travel in Europe.

Tipping Point, by Rain Stickland

About the Author Rain Stickland has been writing since the age of twelve, when the fever took hold and never truly dissipated. Despite two decades of interest in off-grid living, she was only recently introduced to the vast world of preppers. Her interest kicked up a few notches, however, during the Northeast Blackout in 2003, when the world went dark for millions of people, some for weeks. Called the Canadian Tornado by friends, she's written and published nearly 400 articles on a wide variety of topics, including everything from stem cell transplants to the care and feeding of cats, dogs, and ferrets. She lives with her daughter in Ontario, Canada. You can find out more at www.rainstickland.com.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. a review By mattmuttsmith To start off with I would like to say that I would have given this book five stars except for some issues I had with the book. The writing is good. Story is good. Characters are people and not just characters. SPOILERS AHEAD BEWARE: before I get to into the issue I had with it, I would like to say I'm not against having sex in books. I'm a early thirties year old single male, of course I love sex. But it must be done is a realistic way. In the story the main characters is VERY security aware. Doesn't want people finding her home, or following her. Goes to the trouble of owning everything under an umbrella corporation. She is very conscientious about her security. However, right when people are starting to go crazy and the SHTF, she meets a guy, then 8 hours later is having RAUNCHY sex in her home for four or five hours where her daughter and her friends can hear. Not just a moan here and there. But loud sex that the children complain about that morning. What type of example does that send her children who is female? Having sex on the first date? Ha! Try having dirty sex before the first date before you even know what the guys last name is. Ok. Put that aside. But here she is in the SHTF, she has said over and over about how much security is a concern, how she doesn't want people to know where she is, and how she can only trust a few known individuals. So then she up out of the blue invites this guy in, that for all she knows could be a serial killer from mars, into her survival domain and basically gives up the keys to the castle and it's secrets. Talking about "do what I say, and not what I do" but where is her security at now? Heck, even her daughter is giving her the stink eye. Wtf right?Other than the aforementioned the book is alright. Nothing really bad bad bad, but just...strange. If the author could mellow the start of the relationship with the main character out a bit, more like a normal person would go about it, instead of like a Russia rave junkie looking for her next john. Ok that was a little harsh but you get what I'm saying.Over all, if you want to pass some time then read this book. But if you not into raunchy sex then you may want to pass.

Tipping Over into Terror By Kindle Customer Mac, the viewpoint character in Tipping Point, is a fascinating and empowered woman and I fell in love almost from the first page reading this story from what I presume is first time author Rain Strickland. I say presume be cause she writes like she's been doing this professionally for years. The story is tense and filled with a sense of waiting danger almost from the beginning, but the author didn't feel the need to rush the action, and for this I commend her. I also enjoyed the supporting characters and felt the extra time before the SHTF allowed readers to get to know them better. On the technical side, the editing is professional and the writing style is crisp and to the point. Overall, a satisfying, and terrifying, book, and I am eager to see what this author will bring us next. On bit of warning, though. The adult relationship between Mac and Neil as described made me blush at times, but that is probably just me. Oh, and the ferrets made my ankles itch. Read it and see what I mean.My disclaimer-I am a fan of this genre as well as an author and I bought the book after reading the teaser on Amazon. I don't know this author and thought the premise sounded interesting. Wow. Glad I took the time to go looking for something new to read.William Allen

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. overall a pretty enjoyable story. By ** While overall a pretty enjoyable story, there were areas that really detracted from the story's movement forward. Too many sex scenes with the two main characters. I'm no prude and do enjoy a little spice in my stories at times, but it was just too much and detracted greatly from the story line and development of the other characters -- unless that was supposed to be the story line. . . The sentence structuring and paragraphing was very odd, and made it hard to follow what character was really speaking. I'm also not a grammar cop, but this odd structuring made the story sometimes a bit difficult to follow and I had to reread often. Overall though, I did enjoy the story and characters, and will look for the continuation when it becomes available. Ms. Stickland, you're a good writer, and the dialogue and conversational tone of the story was a lot of fun. I so hope you will take my observations as intended, not as criticism, but as a challenge to do more.

Acting on cryptic orders, Special Agent Liam Ward of the Interstellar Navy Investigations Agency (INIA) joins the crew of the Unified Earth Government Ship Dauntless, a modified fast-attack craft, as rumors of an alien invasion mount. Humanity recently discovered that though it was not alone in the universe, it was unique—all other surviving species are synthetic in nature. Many of these alien species are outright hostile toward human civilization, with its mix of biological and artificial citizenry. Ward and his new crewmates chase down leads involving the suspicious orders behind his last mission, which took place aboard the battlecruiser Lincoln. The investigation takes them to unexpected places full of surprises, but one possibility is the most shocking: Someone aboard the Dauntless may be working against them. Ward will have to decide who he can trust as the small, multi-agency crew attempts to expose an alien conspiracy in the Interstellar Navy, and potentially the Government itself, before fears of an invasion become realized.

Lots of action and battles as Liam and co face off against Katildan forces and subverted Earth AIs By Catherine Mackay Limits of Power is the sequel to Paradigm Lost, the first Interstellar Navy Investigatons Agency, and continues three weeks after events occurring in the first book. Liam Ward continues to investigate how far the Katildans (alien AIs encountered in the first book and who want to destroy all biologicals) have infiliterated the United Earth Governmnt's Stellar Navy through their operatives (human created AIs that have been subverted by Katildans). Hugh Taylor has delivered an action packed sequel that sees Liam assigned to the Stellar Naval Ship Dauntless to explore various leads on the infilteration of the Navy by the Katildans. They encounter hurdles along the way - including a possible traitor on Dauntless, false arrest warrants, Katildan scount ships, Stellar Naval ships bent on arresting them, and a full-scale Katildan invasion. Just who do you trust? This is the question that Liam and his comrades face as they try and determine whom the Katildans have subverted and what the Katildans are going to do next - at risk is the hard fought way of life that humanity has created with their human AIs. Absolutely excellant and entertaing sequel and I look forward to the next book in the series.

The basis of the story is that in the galaxy at large, as biological species develop robots, the robots eventually kill off the biologics as they are no longer necessary and are inferior. Human kind is not yet safe from alien robots that are trying to exterminate us but we are making progress.

The ending wasn't quite what I expected, but it works for me. I'm glad Mr. Taylor is already planning a third book, and I'm looking forward to reading it.
