Bear and Squirrel Are Friends . . . Yes, Really!, by Deb Pilutti

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—In this gently teasing picture book, Bear and Squirrel are unusual friends who help each other out. Bear shakes trees so that acorns fall down for Squirrel, and Squirrel helps Bear with some household dusting, but they also play games and have fun together. The other bears and squirrels don't get it—the other bears think Squirrel would be a great snack, and Squirrel's friends worry he'll get eaten. After a long winter of hibernation, Bear awakens and sees Squirrel as a cupcake, and tells Squirrel how delicious he looks. After a few ambiguous and terrifying moments where Bear declares that he can't resist, readers learn that Bear has eaten the blueberry pancakes Squirrel has made without saving any. Bear and Squirrel's friendship is sweet and endearing, but their story is also full of humor, such as when Bear uses Squirrel's tail as a feather duster, Bear's dream bubbles show sandwiches and pizza, and he literally sees Squirrel as a cupcake. The clear, simple illustrations are drawn in muted pastels. Children will laugh at the story and perhaps even learn about being a good friend. VERDICT A general purchase for most library collections.—Liz Anderson, D.C. Public Library

Review They might look very different, but Bear and Squirrel are friends. They both like to gather blueberries and acorns for supper. Bear helps Squirrel build his home in a tree. Squirrel helps Bear keep his den clean (fluffy tails make great dusters). And both of them enjoy playing games. Squirrel's squirrel friends ask Squirrel if he is worried Bear might eat him for a snack. "Don't be silly!" Squirrel scoffs. Bear's friends suggest that Bear might find Squirrel a tasty snack. "That's ridiculous!" Then Bear settles in for a long winter nap, and his friend settles in to wait, knitting a prodigious scarf as he does so. When Bear finally wakes up, they're glad to see each other…but they seem different. Bear looks very toothy, and Squirrel—well, Squirrel looks delicious. To the starved Bear, Squirrel actually looks rather a lot like a cupcake. Bear just can't help himself. There's much chomping and chewing, and Bear apologizes…for eating all the pancakes. Whew. Graphic designer Pilutti presents an unconventional friendship tale in a mix of full-bleed and spot illustrations with a smattering of dialogue bubbles that fit seamlessly into the story. The muted palette and flat, cartoon style work well with the silly, affirmative tale. A nifty, expectation-defying read-aloud. (Kirkus July 15, 2015)Given the title, there’s no chance Bear would ever want to eat Squirrel, right? Just look at the way that Bear shakes acorns out of trees for Squirrel, and how Squirrel lets Bear use his bushy tail for a dust mop. Their friends, however, remain unconvinced. Squirrel’s fellow squirrels are horrified, while Bear’s pals savor fantasies of eating Squirrel in popcorn, in soup, or even in a sundae. Then comes the ultimate test: Bear goes into hibernation (Squirrel patiently knits a scarf that gets longer and longer) and wakes up feeling as hungry as, well, a bear. Can the friendship—and Squirrel—survive? With toylike drawings, sophisticated characterizations, and sly visual jokes, this very funny story tests and tickles readers’ faith in unlikely friendships before ending up right where it should, thanks to a little narrative misdirection and a Squirrel who knows his friend all too well. Yes, Pilutti (Ten Rules of Being a Superhero) is messing with her audience’s minds, but they won’t mind one bit. (Publishers Weekly July 6, 2015)In this gently teasing picture book, Bear and Squirrelare unusual friends who help each other out. The clear, simpleillustrations are drawn in muted pastels. Children will laugh at the story andperhaps even learn about being a good friend. (School Library Journal September 2015)This comical take on an unusual friendship offers lessons in resisting peer pressure and temptation. The story starts by acknowledging that bears will sometimes eat squirrels. But this particular Bear and Squirrel, first shown exchanging a blueberry and an acorn, are friends. They have fun together, chatting on tree trunks or playing hide-and-seek in the forest (though Bear is pretty easy to spot). They help each other out—Squirrel uses his tail to sweep Bear’s den; Bear shakes trees till acorns fall down. But the other bears think Bear is missing out on a tasty snack, and the squirrels think Squirrel is playing around with a killer. The big test comes after Bear wakes up from hibernation and sees Squirrel as a delicious cupcake. Gouache illustrations in gentle colors soften the somewhat scary premise and keep humor at the fore. Readers will love the suspense of the final pages, the resolution of which is a resounding endorsement for friendship through thick and thin (and hunger). (Booklist Online August 31, 2015)

The author uses a rather muted color palette, smart design choices and cartoon-like characters to tell a story that is filled with moments of sly humor. I've been reading this story to various groups of preschoolers all week with great success. The author builds suspense as she leads us through a description of this rather unorthodox friendship, bear's hibernation, and bear's great hunger when he wakes. Will he eat his friend? That's the question that will engage any story time audience, as they can see where this is going from early on. I heard whispered questions as they eagerly waited for me to turn the page. That's great story time stuff! This picture book is wonderfully paced, very well written and filled with enough small details to guarantee lots of requests for repeat reads. No worries, all ends well and the power of friendship is once again reinforced. A surprisingly light and whimsical take on the typical hibernation theme and an enthusiastic recommend.

By Amazon Customer The illustrations and story are delightful. What a neat idea that two vastly different creatures could be good friends. It could be symbolic of human relationships as well. Fun read. I bought several as gifts.

Dragon treasure that could be anything, should be something treasured by the heart. I don't do reviews that give everything away, because I want you to experience the book for yourself, but it touched something in me, which is what a wonderful book does. I was hooked on this author from the first book of hers I read and I have stalked her since! This, however, drew me in with the friendships that were made and the way the love between two main characters grew. Well crafted, and I wand some seaglass for myself as a treasure now!

Saving the Dragons inside By Kristy Heinicke I received an ARC of 'The Dragons" from the author, in exchange for an honest review.I was excited to start reading 'The Dragons' as I absolutely FLOVE Delphina's "B3" series. 'The Dragons' is book 4 of the "Dynamis in New Orleans" series, a multi author collaboration. I haven't read any of the other books in this series so far, but really got into this story & would love to read them, when I get the time too. 'The Dragons' tells a tale of finding true love and the sacrifice one is prepared to make to keep what you love safe. Adeen grows up knowing her purpose in life, her clan propares her for that, then a after dream she to New Orleans, where she meets some unique paranormals.

--The Wanderer, A Literary Journal (regarding Rise of the Dragons)

The #1 Bestselling series, with over 400 five star reviews on Amazon!

A REALM OF SHADOWS is book #5 in Morgan Rice's bestselling epic fantasy series KINGS AND SORCERERS (which begins with RISE OF THE DRAGONS, a free download)!

In A REALM OF SHADOWS, Kyra finds herself in the midst of a burning capital, attacked by a host of dragons, clinging for life. With her beloved homeland destroyed, The Flames down and the trolls pouring in, Kyra must urgently quest to Marda to retrieve the magic weapon before it is too late-even if it takes her into the very heart of darkness.

Duncan finds himself trapped, with the others, in the burning capital, and he uses all his wits to find his men, attempt escape, and rally his forces to regroup and attack Pandesia. Across the kingdom, Merk sails with King Tarnis' daughter through the Bay of Death as they abandon the Tower of Kos and sail for the warrior isle of Knossos. Pursued by Vesuvius and his army of trolls, crossing the world's most treacherous waters, they know they have little chance to reach the isle, and even less chance of escape.

Dierdre and Marco survive the tidal wave that destroyed Ur only to find their beloved city under water. With everyone they knew and loved lost and dead, they must pick up the pieces and journey to the one person they know who is left alive: Kyra. Alec, meanwhile sails back for Escalon with the people of The Lost Isles, holding the precious sword that might just change everything. But none expect to encounter a land destroyed, a land that is now teeming with dragons.

With its strong atmosphere and complex characters, A REALM OF SHADOWS is a sweeping saga of knights and warriors, of kings and lords, of honor and valor, of magic, destiny, monsters and dragons. It is a story of love and broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is fantasy at its finest, inviting us into a world that will live with us forever, one that will appeal to all ages and genders.

Book #6 in KINGS AND SORCERERS will be published soon.

"If you thought that there was no reason left for living after the end of the Sorcerer's Ring series, you were wrong. Morgan Rice has come up with what promises to be another brilliant series, immersing us in a fantasy of trolls and dragons, of valor, honor, courage, magic and faith in your destiny. Morgan has managed again to produce a strong set of characters that make us cheer for them on every page....Recommended for the permanent library of all readers that love a well-written fantasy."

The parts that said 'I knew that I were going to die' parts were still there, but I admit that it was a pretty good book. I wonder who is the worse villan, Ra or Vesvivus, and I think Ra is much more violent and worse because he even makes a good part die for his own saftey. The author had made it more impressing than the 4th book, which isn't very common for an author because most authors make the sequels of a book less impressing than the original. The book made me flip to the end and made me think about the book for a long time, which isn't much common for a fantasy story. This book makes me addicted to my Kindle. However, I wish that there were no parts when the character 'Knew when they would die'. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read it in 2 days and that's because of all my duties. I could just read all day his books. A little editing would help, but this one was much better!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Get away from reality and give in to your inner adventurous side. By Tommy Johnson As in all of Morgan Rice books this is a continuation of non stop story telling from so many varied characters in which the story revolves around. I have read all of The Sorcerer's Ring (twice) and am currently reading book 5 of the Kings and Sorcerers series. These allow me to break away from everyday bad news and feelings and allow me to put myself in a fictional realm of action, drama, suspense and intense action. You can't foresee what will happen next which is another reason I love these books, you never know what will happen next and by anticipating you set yourself up for failure, which, makes you turn the next page and keep reading.Would I recommend these books? Wholeheartedly!!!! In fact I have recommended and then had some very good discussions with those who are now Morgan Rice fans over the books and series.

‘Conduct risk is becoming more and more a buzz word in the financial industry and for regulators. Amidst today’s evolving operating landscape, Vinita has been instrumental in helping senior leaders and colleagues at Barclays interpret and make sense of what good conduct risk management entails, all with a focus on making a tangible difference for our clients, colleagues and the wider industry. Converting theory into practical implementation advice, Vinita has provided pragmatic support and direction to the business, enabling each region to evolve conduct journeys tailor-made to meet their own set of priorities. Through this book, she shares her insights and experience, bringing to readers many practical examples that they can identify with and think through for their own businesses. This is definitely a worthwhile read not just for banking practitioners but for professionals looking at conduct risk management across all industries.’ Didier Vondaeniken, Head of Barclays Wealth, Asia Pacific Why would anyone want to read a book on conduct? The financial crisis of 2008 has left trust at an all-time low. Firms have taken constant battering and as morale takes a hit, no one wants to hear more about correcting behaviour. In rushed efforts to put things right and in burning desires never to err again, are we guilty of tuning people out? Is it possible to be right all the time or are we tipping from one extreme to another? We believe in good conduct – but is our belief strong enough that we care to fix it in the right way? Or having inherited shame, do we pass on dystopia. This book is about conduct. But it is about conduct and everything else, because, like life, conduct on its own has no meaning. When we write about life, we need to capture memories, thoughts, and conversations - in the same way, when we write about conduct, we need to capture context, rationale, decisions and impact. Everything in life, including conduct, is about the synthesis of various facets and how they evolve in relation to one another. It’s all about culmination. We get out of bed in the morning to do something we feel passionate about and to do it well. We don’t wake up purely to conduct ourselves well. Doing something ethically or not is always in relation to a primary purpose and is not a purpose in its own right. Throughout this book, I have approached our efforts to restore good conduct in banks and related discussions from different angles, sharing thoughts and reflections. As we try to resolve issues in our own ways, I note that the one thing we lack is the common denominator. My hope is for this book to provide just that. The story could be a pocket guide for leaders, managers and keen customers wanting to dig deeper into the interesting evolution of conduct in the post-crisis era. Much of this book is set in the UK, yet the principles can be applied worldwide. This book is a simple collection of life. Simply because, if we need to correct something that applies to society at large, then society needs to be part of the correction just as much as firms and regulators. This book is for those who seek to understand and are not afraid of asking questions. And definitely, for those who are not afraid of making mistakes. ‘After all the focus on remediation and stopping people doing bad things, it's great to see a book focused on how we now move on to using conduct positively to make the right proactive decisions in building great businesses that deliver better outcomes for clients...’ Pete Horrell, ex-CEO, Barclays Wealth

Having limited insight of the mechanisms of the financial world, I was pleasantly surprised to find the book as engrossing as I did. It draws parallels and analogies from everyday instances n current events, which bring about a certain connectivity to the book while maintaining the depth of the topic at hand. It is a complicated subject to attempt, as it's not limited just to finance, but to our approach to leadership and integrity across the board. Boldly narrated, and diligently compiled, this book is certainly one to keep on the shelf to revisit.

Easy to read, good pragmatic guidance and obvious why good conduct makes good business sense By Frances This book is written in an easy to digest style, making a potentially dry subject interesting and making it easy to understand why good conduct should simply align with good business - if you do sensible things! It is arranged into logical chapters dealing with different aspects, but I would recommend reading it from front to back to best understand the "conduct journey". Good use of real world case studies.

Infected by a work of art...And of course Lust ;) By Rachel The moment I started to read Lust, it reminded me why I have fallen in love with this series. I was a fan of Madness but after divulging into Lust it takes you another step further in the world of the Shadow Keepers. There isn't many books out there that captured me from the first few sentences but this one does. Jas has created a world that you fall into and never want to leave. The characters are addictive and you find yourself laughing and crying along with them. It's hard not to get attached to every single one of them. All your favourite characters from Madness are still there and with the introduction of new ones which you grow to love with every page you read. Reno is still Reno which I absolutely love. Kenzie, well she isn't what you would call the typical heroine but that's what makes the story so different. Jas has created characters with 'flaws' and not the typical characters that are labelled as 'perfect' which makes the story she has created so much more than just a typical novel – she has created a new world. The Grid. Makes you wish you could be a Shadow Keeper, a Breaker or even a Relay. There isn't many books out there that has me reading them 4/5 times in one day but Lust does. And that's because it's so captivating, it's a true master piece. Every single story within this book is truly worth reading because its the world of the Shadow Keepers, I mean where else can read stuff like this? The story flows amazingly well, so many stories told in one novel. And of course the infamous Jess Bailey, how could anyone not love the cowboy?Lust has you on the edge of your seat the entire time and it leaves you begging for more. Trust me, you won't be able to put this down once you start reading. 10/10. I really can't wait to read the next one to see what Jas does because it's going to be EPIC! The shadow Keeper series is truly one of a kind, there is nothing else out there quite like it.Lust is truly magical and is a complete masterpiece and I can't wait until the next one.

She really knows how to bring the characters to life in such a way that they stay with you even after you finish reading. I truly admire an author that can do that. How this series isn't a N.Y. Best Seller, I don't know, but it definitely needs to be!!!

By Andy B I didn't know what to expect when I was gifted an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, especially since I'm not an avid reader of paranormal romance. But once I started reading this story, I was hooked. Ward is a great storyteller and has a vivid imagination, which she is able to transform into a world of non stop action! Great descriptions make you visualize the world of the Grid, and the characters draw you in so much that you feel you're a part of it! I found myself emotionally involved in their stories and backgrounds! Even more surprising to me, was how she was able to weave some Greek mythology (one of my passions), into the action. This could make a great movie. Ward just got a new fan. Can't wait to read more of this series.

Spectacularly successful blending of previous stories By Amy I liked the whole series, but found this last book especially satisfying - characters and pieces of the world that had remained loosely-tied but mostly-separate from previous books were wrapped together into a nicely gripping whole. It achieved a particularly difficult thing - showing consequences and continuation of previous stories without feeling anticlimactic - particularly well. The story was well-paced, the characters believably matured (and not) from previous books, with a good amount of ongoing conflict and resolution. The series as a whole, and this book in particular, are definitely worth a read (or three).

Without too many spoilers, I'll say that though I saw a few twists coming, I didn't put them together more than a few pages before the characters did and the whole world - which seemed a bit separated in the earlier books - is coming together nicely in a coherent whole.I found this book to have a bit more of an exclusive "grab" on my attention than some of the earlier books in the series, without leaving me feeling like I'd been pulled through behind a speeding horse (like happens with, e.g., Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books).

While Tzavelas summarizes the first books in the series in the preface to this one, for those who want to jump into the series here, I highly recommend that at a minimum you read _Matchbox Girls_, _Infinity Key_, and the title story in the short story collection _Etiquette of Exiles_ before reading this one. It doesn't work as well as a stand-alone novel. As usual, Tzavelas' world-building and characters continue to be her strengths. We reconnect with old favorites who have been with us since _Matchbox Girls_ (primarily Corbin, Marley, Branwyn, and Penny) and learn more about their powers, interactions, limitations, and relationships. The Senyaza books are inhabited with an engrossing mix of demons, fairies, angels, monsters, and Nephilim wizards, but good and bad aren't cut and dry here and the different races (and individuals) behave in unexpected ways. This book is split between following Marley and Branwyn's stories. Marley and Corbin try to figure out if they can have a romantic relationship (complicated by Corbin being infected by some sort of supernatural plague which is changing his behavior and personality at the same time that it massively increases his power). At the same time, Branwyn is exploring her powers as an artificer who shapes magical artifacts out of the stuff of reality. One of my favorite interactions in the book is between Branwyn and a skyscraper that she has woken up with her powers, giving a new twist to the A.I./creator plotline. I really enjoyed how Tzavelas explored how Branwyn's ability to release powerful magical artifacts into the world has drastic consequences beyond the original purpose of the artifact. The different beings in this world are constantly trying to re-purpose or steal them. (We even learn that the federal government is getting involved.)The pacing in this story is brisk with lots of action and a satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend this book, as well as the preceding books in the series.

From the Author I remember standing on a Mayan pyramid, drenched in sweat, and wondering: could a Viking shield wall hold the summit?I carried that question around for years until I wrote what became the third episode of this 5-part series.

About the Author M Harold Page once backpacked around Mexico. He's also spent a lifetime studying Medieval History, and almost half his life playing with swords.

Too much? Never! Each installment of M. Harold Page's madcap adventure leaves me eager for more.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. "Wait—there has been a slaughter here!"A scarf muffled Doc Tanner's words. Each of his companions had one wrapped around his or her face to give what protection the garment could from the powder snow and dust whipped at them by the unforgiving North Plains late-winter wind. The seven friends staggered across a bright desert of white. Ryan Cawdor had to lean hard into the bone-cutting wind to keep it from pushing him upright. The snow wasn't falling, so far as he could tell. The mat-trans jump had delivered them to the rolling prairie of the eastern Badlands of what had been South Dakota, near the border with the former Nebraska, as near as they had been able to tell from J. B. Dix's minisextant and Doc's calculations.Ryan drew his SIG Sauer P226. Doc's warning cry had indicated no present danger. Had the old man detected an immediate threat, he would have called it out. Doc had been trawled from his time in the 1880s to the 1990s by the whitecoats of Operation Chronos. Doc had proved to be an uncooperative test subject, so he had been thrust one hundred years into the future to what was now known as the Deathlands. The multiple time jumps had addled his brain, and sometimes he wandered in a fog that filled his brain. But when it came to danger to himself and his friends, he snapped back to the here and now. He had spoken very clearly in the past tense—but Ryan was not put at ease.If people had been slaughtered, that meant cold-hearts, and they might still be in the area."Weapons out, people," the one-eyed man called. He knew that his companions would most likely have their blasters in hand, but he had to be sure. They were all seasoned Deathlands travelers and fighters, but everybody made mistakes. And they were all worn down by hunger, fatigue and the biting cold.He had his six companions winged out in a vee formation: his lover, Krysty Wroth, to his right; then Ricky Morales; then J. B. Dix, the Armorer. To the left walked Doc, Mildred Wyeth and Jak Lauren. They were spread out far enough they could just keep each other in sight in the storm.Jak, a slight, skinny albino youth, normally walked, not point, but ranging in advance of the others to scout out danger. Not today. In this nasty storm, which was worse than a thick fog because the wind-blown dust and ice particles stung the eyes and constantly threatened to clog them, Ryan wanted J.B.'s judgment and skill with a blaster, and Jak's hunting-tiger senses guarding the rear. That accounted for why the least likely of them all, Dr. Theophilus Algernon Tanner, had spotted something first. Although Doc looked to be pushing seventy hard—if not powering right by—in fact he was roughly the same age as Ryan in terms of years actually lived. It was his time jumps and the abuse he had suffered at the hands of twentieth-century whitecoats that had prematurely aged him and addled his mind."Swing left, everybody," Ryan called. "We need to see what we might be up against—"A man suddenly appeared, stumbling toward them blindly in the hard driving snow."Black cloud," Ryan heard him mumbling. "The black cloud!"The one-eyed man raised his handblaster. The man showed no sign of even seeing the companions, even though he was about to blunder right between him and Doc. Ryan had not kept himself alive—to say nothing of his companions—across the length and breadth of the Deathlands by taking anything for granted. And then the shambling man clearly did see them. Ryan could actually make out his eyes going wide in the gore and filthy mask of his face."You mutie bastards!" he screamed. Suddenly he was raising an ax above his head with both hands. "You won't take me alive!"He charged. The goggle-like shades, with slits of polarized glass, protected Hammerhand's eyes from the wind-lashed snow, dust and grit as he scaled the peak the Plains folk called Gray Top.Nothing protected the rest of his massive frame. His muscle-packed six-foot-six-inch body was nude from the black topknot surmounting his side-shaved head to the soles of his feet. Susan Crain, the Crow Nation healer and medicine woman he had sought for counsel, had told him that he had to be naked to complete the vision quest. The rugged granite rock cut into his palms and feet, but he ignored the discomfort. He was inured to hardship, from the abuse and poverty his tribe and own family had inflicted on him, growing up among the Kaina people of the great Blackfoot Confederacy of the short grass plains to the north.Of course, the nuking mushrooms I ate might be helping with that, he thought. The magic mushrooms made him hyperaware, his senses unnaturally keen. Yet they made him somehow less vulnerable to those sensations. They also deadened fear. But he was used to fighting down the terrors that beset him. He'd done that all his life, as well. The mountain, which took its name from the gray granite cap rock that rose above its pine-clad slopes and the surrounding Black Hills, stood near the Dead White Man Faces Mountain. It was the tallest in the Hills. It was held to possess great power. It seemed as good a place as any to find the key to his destiny.Hammerhand wasn't sure he believed in all this mystic shit. Then again, he wasn't sure he didn't. For nuking sure he'd had to put up with the taunts and barbs of those smug bastard Absarokas in order to consult their well-known shaman. After a generation or two of peace, the two nations, his Blackfoot Confederacy and the Crow, were back to an on-again, off-again war of mutual raiding and occasional battles. The only reason they hadn't shot him on sight was that he was a known exile from his native Blood band, a wild child whose wickedness and ambition alike were too great to be constrained by tradition and stick-up-their-butts elders. But his judgment wasn't trusted widely enough, even by other adolescent warriors, for him to raise his own war band and probe his inner self in any kind of way anyone on the Plains would pay attention to.Painfully and painstakingly he made his way to the top. That had always been his strength, he reckoned: that he could act with precision or passion, as the need of the moment required. Mebbe both.It was why he knew himself fit to rule. The question was how.And mebbe who. Those questions were what had brought him here: blasted out of his mind, freezing to his marrow and a hundred feet in the air up a cliff of granite made slick by blowing snow, cold enough to dangerously numb the fingers and toes that scrabbled and fought for holds every inch of the tortuous way up.But Hammerhand persevered. He was good at that, too. That was another way he reckoned he was superior to the people who'd given him life: although they could endure almost anything, and had wizard survival skills, they had a tendency to fly off the handle at random moments. Not at something that required persistence in a physical craft—like skinning a chilled elk or even curing its hide for use in making clothing and lodges—but at anything abstract. They didn't have what it took to envision Empire and make it happen. They didn't have the horizon.Hammerhand did. That part of the vision he had. But he knew he was missing key pieces. He could see barely past his fingertips when his arms were fully stretched out. For a moment, when through the whirling whiteness he glimpsed rugged gray with only more white beyond—just above his reach—his brain, altered as it was, couldn't process what its eyes were showing it.His body came to the rescue. Locked in "climb" mode, it commenced to haul his mass up the cliff again, fingers and toes seeking cracks and jutting icy gray stone. The image of the lip of the cliff resolved itself into his brain: the top!Seeing a bright line of red and yellow halation following the outline of the rock-sky interface, Hammer-hand let his mind ride shotgun as his body pulled itself onto the angled and uneven upper surface. Exercising the power of suggestion as much as his powerful will, he stood upright, bracing slightly against a wind, fierce now that it was unrestrained, that sought to bash him right back over the cliff to oblivion."I'm here," he called into the storm. It seemed he could hear the individual impact of each tiny particle of snow, ice and grit as it banged against the lenses of his glasses. He looked around and could scarcely see more than ten feet from the tip of his nose. The hilly, wooded country surrounding the peak was invisible. And then, suddenly, it was before him: a masculine figure, as nude as he was and at least twice as tall, floating six feet above the wind-swept granite. Its every muscle was seemingly molded with great precision out of white light. The brightness of the faceless figure didn't hurt his eyes. But the golden radiance that surrounded it dazzled him through his shades, making him blink and try to turn away.He found that he could not."Hammerhand," a voice said like thunder. "Kneel before me.""Who are you?" he demanded. He was determined not to let the…thing…see his fear. Even though he had the drug to deaden it, his knees were so loose he was only keeping himself upright by the force of his will."I am your destiny. Kneel before me." "I'd rather die standing!""It is not permitted," the voice boomed. "Nor is disobedience. I am Fate."The willpower that held his knees locked shattered like glass struck with a hammer. His legs folded abruptly beneath him. It was all he could do to keep from going over backward on his buttocks. Then, irresistibly, he felt his torso being winched upward, until he sat up straight. He could feel his muscles doing it, but not by his will, nor under his control."You see that resistance is futile, Hammerhand.""What do you want from me?""Only to give you that which you most desire, what you have come here to obtain, naked, freezing and electric."Now, hear me…"Chapter Two The boom of the stubby shotgun barrel beneath the longer main barrel of Doc's gigantic LeMat revolver beat the blast of Ryan's SIG Sauer P226 by half a heartbeat. The man was already staggered by the charge of buckshot when Ryan double-tapped him at the center of mass, which was still more shadow than apparent substance. The .44-caliber upper barrel of Doc's revolver spit yellow flame and crashing noise. The man's head snapped back and he crumpled into the snow."Offer accepted," Ryan said, lowering his weapon. "Maybe we should've tried to keep him alive," Mildred said as Ryan cautiously approached the fallen man. She wasn't doing it just to be contrary—although she was perfectly capable of that. She, like Doc, had been taken out of her own time in the distant past by science. But in her case the motivation was the opposite of Doc's: doctors had put Mildred into cryosleep when a routine abdominal operation had gone terribly wrong, hoping that she could be cured sometime in the future."It might have been helpful if he could've told us what happened here," she continued. "And who did it."Ryan began to see signs of what had inspired Doc's original call-out: ruined buildings and scattered trash on the ground beyond the man they'd chilled. Some of that trash, he saw, was bodies. Much of it appeared to be body parts.Ryan grunted. "Abstract knowledge doesn't load many magazines," he said."I'm a big fan of not getting my skull split by an ax," J.B. commented. Then he frowned and stepped up to kneel by the chill, pointing the muzzle of his M-4000 shotgun skyward."Look at this," he said, while Jak, who had appeared at the fringes of visibility when the blasterfire erupted, vanished back into the blowing snow. Ryan thought about warning him not to get too far from the group lest he lose sight of the rest. But then he knew how ridiculous that was. The albino would find a way to track them through a sealed-up cavern at midnight. As long as Jak lived, his companions would never have to worry about finding him. He'd find them. Also, Ryan knew the danger in giving orders he knew might not be obeyed. The albino accepted Ryan's leadership. But he had his own notions of how to do his job as scout. And since he was the best there was, Ryan had learned to give him his head in such matters.Instead he allowed himself to take his eye off the surroundings, where he saw little but still-vague shapes in the blown snow anyway, to look at the man. As expected, he was dead. His remaining eye, bright blue, glared at the keening white void above. His other, his right, was a bloody socket rimmed with semiliquid aqueous humor. He'd suffered its loss recently, along with the other wounds visible on his face and chest through his ripped-open plaid flannel shirt. The Armorer pointed to, without touching, red-rimmed rings on his cheek and jaw. Sucker marks."Stickie," Ryan muttered. "Ace on the line."He looked up and around. What little he could make out through the wind-blown snow and grit suggested structures that had never been much to start with but were probably worse now."Eyes skinned," he commanded, straightening. "We don't know if the muties are still around.""Some are," Mildred observed, sounding grim. "The bodies I can see from here are stickies. Or stickie parts, mostly. They're everywhere.""It looks as if a bomb went off in a stickie colony," Krysty stated.Ryan moved on from the chill. Almost at once he came close to stumbling over a lump that he quickly realized was a green stickie torso—headless, limbless, about the size of a ten-year-old norm's body. It was partly covered with drifted powdery snow."Could they have been fighting?" Ricky asked warily. He'd had to make some adjustments to his outlook on muties when joining up with Ryan and his group. His homeland, Puerto Rico, was called Monster Island, not just because it was overrun with savage monsters—it was—but also because large colonies of humanoid muties, including stickies, lived side by side with the human majority in perfect amity. Whereas on the mainland mutation was considered a taint—such that even the gorgeous Krysty Wroth faced discrimination or even violence whenever it was found out that she was, though nearly perfect in face and form, a mutie.Of course, on the mainland, stickies had earned their reputation as monsters a thousand times over.

By Kindle Customer OK, now it is finally time for a REAL hardcore fan review, instead of these one-liner starred reviewed ones.Victor Milan returns to pen the FINAL Deathlands novel. (How friggin' sad is that?!)Unfortunately this longest running post-holocaust series ever written ends with somewhat typical adventure, instead of the BANG-UP ending it truly deserves. This last book is not bad, nor as full of issues as the last one, but just knowing that Gold Eagle, (all the way until the very end), just cannot please their reader fans and set up a proper ending from the large amount of writers that have penned this series over the last couple of decades.Veteran Author Milan knows how to deliver an action-packed post-holocaust adventure, and has been doing it since the 80's, but this was not one of his stronger ones. Yet it IS better than his last one. It is not a bad book at all, despite some shortcomings and plotholes, BUT, it being the LAST DL, one can't expect nothing else than loose threads being tied up, aka, Dean Cawdor, Matt-trans, Mildred's CD and numerous noted that were supposed to become the Codex that leads to Outlanders. And Sharona Carson, who stole Dean back. Is she still alive or what?!And, most importantly, what about Abe and Trader and the bad guy Stroub? (I think that was his name. Not sure. Been many years.)But, anyways, it is with heavy heart that we are not touting this last DL book, titled Devil's Vortex, as being the awesome ending ALl fans want and deserve. I'm sure this poor author didn't know either at the time, because we like Milan's work. We are sure given enough time and knowledge that this title was coming to an abrupt end, he would have crafted a duology or trilogy, giving us hardcore fans all the answers to the various threads we just mentioned above. My wife and I have read every James Axler/McPhee book out there. (Some numerous times.)Devil's Vortex has some true gem moments in it, and IS better than any Andy Boot or Edo von Belkom tales ever written. We would like to thank all 12 authors who penned the Deathlands through the last 30 years. We were in the military when we picked up the 1st Deathlands book - Pilgrimage to Hell, created by and co-authored by Jack Adrian, by taken over and cemented into one of the all-time best - and definitely longest running - post-holocaust series, like so many we were inundated with back in the 80's during the Cold War era. From the Survivalist to the short-running series like the Traveler, we tried them all. (In terms of character development, overall change or feel to a series, it would have to go to the also long running Survivalist series, due to it having one writer having his vision, enabling characters to grow up, die, or just move along. Something we kinda wished DL would have done.)Here are all the authors, in order, as well as number of books written in the DL series, two which are deceased. Many thanks go out to the one and true original author, Laurence James, the TRUE James Axler, (despite what Mark Ellis touts). It is not how many books you write, it is that you are the original author. And the one your Outlanders was clearly blue-printed from. Without Deathlands, there would not have been an Outlanders. (Not the same incarnation, leastways.)After the awesome Laurence James passed, giving fans 34 DL books and two trilogies, (Earth Blood and Survival 2000), the uber talented Mark Ellis took over and wrote three Deathlands books and 361/2 Outlander books. (One was co-authored with Mel Odom.)Then Mel Odom came on the scene and ended up penning 4 Deathlands books and 4 Outlanders books.Afterwards there was the awesome Alan Philipson who wrote 14 Deathlands books. (Huge talent and a very nice guy!)Then there was Terry Collins who unfortunately penned only 3 DL books. Some consider his top prime, too!The now deceased Nick Pollatta came on the scene and exploded with 20 books. RIP Nick!Andy Boot wrote 18 DL books, and some consider some of his as being the very worst. We thought at times he was spot-on, but then it veered into la la land. Thanks for your contribution anyway, Andy!Edo van Belkom penned 2 DL. Meh!Victor Milan wrote 15 DL books and 7 Outlanders. (We still think his Awakenings and Sun Lord was some of the most innovative writing from that series. He shook up that series. Like him or hate him, Victor Milan has been one of the longest and most prolific action/adventure writer of this genre than any on this list. His The Guardians post-holocaust series, penned under the alias Richard Austin, was truly excellent. Then there is the HUGELY talented giant that came on the DL scene and blew everyone away - long time Mack Bolan veteran author Chuck Rogers delivered 3 bad ass DL books. Damn shames we will never get to read future DL's penned by him. Seemed as if he was just warming up.Then there was a very talented author, John Helfers, who gave us also only 3 DL books. He was another one my wife and I were looking forward to seeing what more he could do. GREAT work, Mr. Helfers!Rik Hoskin, main author of the Outlanders series, in which he wrote 19 of them, including the very last one, penned 5 DL books. And there ya go. The end, and thank you!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Three Stars By Bill Bailey Not as good as some of the previous work. No series ending. the publisher has discontinued the series

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. sorry ending to such a series By james bradley More predictable writing from a long line of Axlers. This was supposed to be the LAST. IT DIDN'T COME SOON ENOUGH. For "the last" in the series, the idiots that served as editors did not "end" the series. The travelers are STILL wandering about destroying old tech, uprooting barons and their usual work. Series did not have them finding their comfortable place, a place to settle down. Many old characters and villas still abound. This was a sorry wrap up piece.

Barcelona a photographic tour (Photographic tours) (Volume 2), by Alexandru Ciobanu

Review "In vibrant color photography, Ciobanu covers the gamut in the city of Barcelona, from major attractions to hidden corners. Additionally, it's a well-detailed travel guide in prose that's both concise and informative. As a memento of the experience, or something to whet your appetite about what the city has to offer, you're not going to going to find a much better coffee table book about the city." - Self-Publishing Review

By #redhead.with.book If I didn't have any interest in visiting Barcelona, I certainly do now! Alexandru Ciobanu has put together a Barcelona travel guide that will pique the interest of most travellers, especially artists and those who love architecture and history. What an colourful and intriguing city! The book's photographs feature mostly architectural landmarks, parks, museums and fun places to visit. There is a small map of Barcelona in the back of the book. I didn't know that Barcelona had a beach!I read this as a digital copy and this would be useful to put in a smart phone or tablet when you are travelling around the city along with an interactive map you can download from the internet. The photography is relevant to a travel guide (although a bit heavy on the HDR - but I assume this is the photographer's personal style). I would have liked to have seen a few more restaurants featured in this book but overall there is plenty for a person to discover using this guide. The page layouts were easy to use and the descriptions of the photographs not overly wordy and tagged with numbers for ease of reference.I'm glad I read Alexandru's book because there is another entry in my "to-visit" list.

Lovely collection of professional quality photos By Kindle Customer This short book has photos of many of Barcelona's landmarks, with a few lines of description of either the specific landmark or the general topic. It's not a guidebook but it will be of interest to visitors planning a trip or those who enjoy Barcelona's unique attractions

The choice of photographs as well as the description has my mouth watering to go and experience this glorious city. I can also understand how Picaso developed his artistic integrity. It is all around the city.
