Here, the dialog between characters is crisp yet the prose isn't overwrought with jargon. Although I am a fan of "A Song of Ice and Fire," Martin's work can be as difficult as Tolkien at times. He delivers again in book 2 of The World of Ruin series with amazing characters, compelling drama and epic adventure set in a wonderfully rich fantasy world.

By Young Bones, M.D. This novel is a worthy successor to Shadow of the Winter King, containing enough continuing characters that the reader is familiar with the location if having read the previous novel, while not relying on the "same cast" entirely, allowing more-complex character development of the existing characters and the introduction of new ones. It is refreshing to read a novel that is expertly written, with compelling prose and intricate detail. Best, this book doesn't try to mimic other successful worlds or settings, and instead continues to flesh out the world of Ruin, which is unique and not a Tolkien copy. Definitely a good pickup for people who like fantasy, and a must-read for people who liked the first book in the series.

This was a most welcome sequel to Shadow of the Winter King By Dominic F This was a most welcome sequel to Shadow of the Winter King, the first book in the World of Ruin series. Life long relationships are not a guarantee that someone will be on your side. When trying to throw out the Children of Ruin from Luether Garin needs to ally with long time enemies that have had nothing but animosity between them up until now. Is that a guarantee of betrayal? Is the the greater hatred of the Children of Ruin oppressing and running rough shod over Luether for 20 seasons a guarantee of an amicable partnership? Even with the one person army Ovelia at his side Garin is put to the test over and over and over again throughout this adventure to wrest control of his rightful place as King of Luether.
