The Scarlett Legacy (Woodland Creek), by K.N. Lee, Woodland Creek

Review "WHAT A THRILL, that first chapter, damn... then it just continues on. A dangerous crime boss goes down, the only heir returns, a century old feud, shifters, wizards & secrets, all wrapped up in this delicious book. I honestly couldn't put it down, I NEEDED to find out what happens & then WOW, I so didn't expect that."- Kristy Heinicke (Book Likes) "This one is also kinda a mob like situation, but with some seriously twisted moments. Man, this was intense, but oh so good. I could not put this one down. With a seriously cool shifter, some magic, some wizards, and some creepy mob people, I loved it. And I loved the ending, I was totally not sure Evie would get a HEA at all. She earned it though. And sometimes, bad people are bad people, and sometimes good people can do bad things. It's a vicious cycle. But it made for a great story, and the writing was AWESOME!! I will be looking into more of this author's work as well. 5 PAWS!"- Happy Tails and Tales

I’m human, I let my eyes deceive me a lot. However, the cover shouldn’t discourage you because this story is amazing. So good, it’ll leave you begin for more after the last page is turned. One thing that had me toying with my emotions was that the description, after I read it, it made me think that Evie would surely fall for this evil person, he’d redeem himself, live happily ever after, you know the rest. In reality, we are introduced to Evie’s “simple” life where she’s madly in love with Parker and is about to marry him. I thought “Pfft whatever, move to the other guy” but the story really grips your heart when this evil person comes that you don’t want her with him because, in fact, he’s actually even more evil than what you imagined, and he’s gonna cost her all her dreams and hopes. The author presents a very interesting family theme among the Scarlett. If you are a Scarlett, you are loyal until death, no matter what you did, no matter what could happen, you all stand together. Even when I wanted to smack every single person that messed things up and had Evie sacrifice herself, I could appreciate that brave and sacrificing nature of her for her family.Woodland Creek is a weird place. It has shifters, wizards, werewolves, and many more things that are all somehow attracted to this place by some force. I was in awe with the many magical and mythological things in the story and loved every moment of it. I think that, even if they are elements widely used by many, K.N. Lee managed to give it her own style to catch readers with her paranormal characters and small-town setting. With sweet and semi-steamy romance, strange mythological creatures, and evil plots, this story is one for lovers of anything paranormal and romance. I started to read this by curiosity while I was doing a final work. Instead of do research and finish it, I was reading this until the wee hours of the night. Definitely worth trying. And maybe even some of the other Woodland Creek novellas by others authors too.Rating: 5 starsReview by Jennifer Madero

I love the opening scene where Olivia is an assassin spider and sneaks in to kill someone. Very intense. I could really feel for the dangers she experienced being such a small but deadly spider. Evie is totally in the dark about her family’s history with the Price family of wizards. She is also in the dark about her own legacy from her mother. Evie thought she was just a wizard with some mind reading powers. Not so.Evie desperately wants to marry Parker Drake, a mere human but her friend since grade school, and leave Woodland Creek and her scary family behind forever. But then she has a premonition and all her plans go off the rails. This was incredibly suspenseful in ways I didn’t anticipate. The writing is phenomenal. I am new to the world of Woodland Creek but I felt immediately like I had been reading from this series for years. They all felt so familiar and real.I love the intense relationship between Evie and Parker. They are so sweet together. You can’t help but root for them to have everything they want, especially each other. There are shifters and gryphons and wizards and murders and all kinds of horrible things that go on in Woodland Creek. Every page was a pleasant surprise. I never saw the ending coming. That speaks volumes to me. This is highly recommended.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. So many great things, yet. . . By Tonja Drecker After seeing the cover and reading the premise, this was a book I really was looking forward to getting my hands on.The first chapter grabs immediately. A shape-shifter sneaks in and murderers a mafia boss, and so the scene is set for a fantastical crime adventure. When Evie steps up in the next chapter, the daughter of a crime boss who is totally unaware of the situation around her, it's hard not to like her right away. She's pure and kind, where her family is not. Her hopes are merely in getting a good degree and marrying her hot and just as pure boyfriend. Black vs. White. As the story continues, it's easy to see how Evie's family is able to keep her in the dark. I never had the impression that she was 'stupid' but simply well-lied to. She's sweet in every way and represents the kind of girl one would enjoy being best friends with. Not even snobby despite her family's wealth and position. When the super hot Avalon, the son of the murdered mafia king, enters the scene, it seems as if Evie is destined for him. There's a great tension inside and around Evie as she tries to comes to terms with her own split heart. It's romance pure and totally drool worthy from all sides. As I read through this, I was completely drawn up in the story, wondering which perfect guy would win out in the end. . .and of course, very curious where all the revenge, intrigue, murder and magical powers would take matters. This was a book I didn't want to put down and loved getting lost in the pages. Then the last chapters came, and everything flipped into full speed. All the intrigue and tension that had been built up seemed to fall to the wayside as the story suddenly felt rushed to simply get to the end. I couldn't wait to see what happened with Avalon, but just as it got good. . .his personality switched into over-drive and the hoped for tension between him and Evie never had a chance to really develop. There was so much potential and it left me feeling cheated. Even Evie's original boyfriend suddenly appears and knows everything without any struggle or confusion since the family, unseen to the reader, decided to reveal all so-called 'secrets' to him. There is so much to love in this book, but the ending felt like a nose-dive, which is really too bad since the writing, characters and descriptions are pretty amazing during most of the book.I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

By Opeth32 If I don't like quite book I just don't like it and I will say as much and then some if I really was let down lol. But I and so many other readers don't realize a book is an authors creation and baby. Unless your Laurell K Hamilton and and just write bad fiction just because you don't know any better and don't know when to quit. HA! Anyway I re-read the first book in this series this last week and realized just how good it was. And this sequel is awesome! Is it comparable to Project Nemesis? No but as a story about humanity vs giant alien monsters it is just as good. The author describes tsunamis in such a descriptive way when these monsters crash land into the ocean. His description of the following tsunamis is untouchable. I really felt tension and fear when reading those scenes. He is good at describing the monsters too with just enough detail that doesn't need two boring chapters of minute detail on them. I would like to see this author write kaiju vs kaiju stories as well I bet he could just tear it up. Seriously. Anyway kudos to this author really good story very action pack and can't wait for more.

By Neil D Couey Picking up a short while after the events of Kaiju Deadfall we once again get to go along with Walker and Costas as they try to save the world from alien invaders. Some new characters are thrown in the mix and as usual Mr Gurley fleshes them out very well. The Military is not negatively portrayed as they usually are in end of the world fiction and to me that is a plus. The creature descriptions are really done well but not tedious and are folded into the action of the story which is pretty much non-stop. It all adds up to a really good story which will be enjoyed by anyone who's a fan of Aliens, Godzilla, etc. This book can be read and enjoyed as a stand alone but I strongly suggest reading Kaiju Deadfall first.

Excerpt from Intra MurosI felt that he was right, said in a few words, and we started slowly up the street. He had drawn my hand within his arm, and endeavored to interest me, as we walked. But my heart clung to the dear ones whom I felt I was not to see again on earth, and several times I stopped and looked wistfully back the way we had come. He was very patient and gentle with me, waiting always till I was ready to proceed again; but at last my hesitation became so great that he said pleasantly:"You are so weak I think I had better carry you;" and without waiting for a reply, he stooped and lifted me in his arms, as though I had been a little child; and, like a child, I yielded, resting my head upon his shoulder, and laying my arm about his neck. I felt so safe, so content, to be thus in his care. It seemed so sweet, after the long, lonely struggle, to have some one assume the responsibility of caring thus tenderly for me.He walked on with firm, swift steps, and I think I must have slept; for the next I knew, I was sitting in a sheltered nook, made by flowering shrubs, upon the softest and most beautiful turf of grass, thickly studded with fragrant flowers, many of them the flowers I had known and loved on earth. I remember noticing heliotrope, violets, lilies of the valley, and mignonette, with many others of like nature wholly unfamiliar to me.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I found it calming, reassuring, loving and reaffirming, written when life was simpler but basic values and feelings are ageless! I've purchased several copies to share with others facing death of their loved ones!

An 1800’s Perspective of Visiting A Heavenly/Celestial World By Stella Carrier This kindlebook of Intra Muros by Rebecca Ruter Springer caught my attention due to my intuitive understand of why I must be open to both new age and Christian views on the afterlife (for personal spiritual reasons I would rather avoid going into for now). Additionally, I unintentionally found out about the late author and this book and felt that there was a spiritual reason for this especially when I noticed that Rebecca Springer (the author) shared the same birthday as me. Springer begins her writing by admitting that she had been ill for many weeks and sharing the details of wearing a robe similar to the other residents of the place that her soul traveled to. Springer also mentioned the elaborate detail of the houses she visited in this new heavenly world that were made of the finest marbles, broad verandas, and were unlike any architecture that she has seen on earth. The good news is that there is more details to Intra Muros by Rebecca Springer.

"The Selous was my very first Africa experience, and it remains my favorite. Robert J. Ross's extraordinary photographs take us into a natural world unlike any other on earth. A world of elephants. Of wild dogs. Of nature as it should be, can be, might be--if we keep these breathtaking images firmly in mind. A triumph!" --- Bryan Christy, Director, Special Investigations Unit, National Geographic

The Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania is Africa's oldest and largest protected area. Proclaimed in 1896, and bigger than Switzerland, the Selous is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Selous remains one of Africa's largest and greatest undisturbed ecosystems, teeming with life including one of the largest elephant populations remaining on the African continent, large packs of wild dogs, vast herds of buffalo as well as more lions than any other protected area on the continent as reported by National Geographic in August 2013. New York-born photographer Robert J. Ross has spent much of the past six years photographing in this vast and difficult to access reserve. He has compiled more than 100,000 images showing all aspects of the reserve's varied landscapes, seasons, flora and large and small fauna. The spectacular large-format photography book features a selection of the very best images including landscapes, wildlife portraits and behavior, night photography, impressionist style work and breath-taking aerials.

The Selous in Africa: A Long Way from AnywhereFrom Officina Libraria (Acc)

Review The Selous in Africa: A Long Way From Anywhere, features nearly 400 photographs of this extraordinary place. The images showcase not only the large mega-fauna typically seen in a photographic book on African wildlife, but also the fantastic and often overlooked smaller creatures, birds, insects, and dramatic landscapes. (Africa Geographic Magazine, January 29, 2016/Issue 83)...filled with his vibrant portraits of animals and landscapes from one of Africa's last truly wild places. (Emily Silber Audobon.org, December 2, 2015)...the story of the Selous Game Reserve is best experienced through Ross' outstanding photography. The images have been selected from over 100,000 photographs shot over four years. The Selous in Africa – A Long Way From Anywhere will be an excellent addition to your library! (Africa Indaba, December 2015)I hope Robert Ross's record of the Selous, its unique ecosystems and diverse wildlife, will both inspire and educate. Enjoy this book and share it, for its message is important―a document of the natural world and a reminder that it is ours to protect (Alexander Rhodes, CEO, Stop Ivory)[Ross'] stunning images inventory the magnificent biodiversity of the continent's oldest protected wilderness as well as the threats it now faces. (John Burnett NPR.org, December 2015)...a stunning visual journey of one of Africa's largest protected areas.... Indeed the breadth and beauty of [Ross'] photos are a testament to why this natural treasure is worth preserving. (Dexter Cirillo Aspen Sojourner, Midwinter/Spring2016)This is one of the special African books not only because it is of a unique location, but because the photographic images are unusual and so well done. (Noella Ballenger Apogee Photo, April 2016)

So we had been waiting anxiously for it to come to print. Rob has fully captured the essence and the beauty of this wonderful game reserve. His photos of the animals and landscapes bring The Selous to life in stunning color and in incredibly real life "Kodak" moments. This book is simply spectacular!!!

This book is more than a collection of photographs but a story about Africa and its irreplaceable heritage. Rob's passion and commitment to conservation and wildlife come through in his work - the beauty and complexity of the planet and the fragility of our world.

The way it should be but, as we all know, many companies and societies are yet to be fully signed-up to this ideal. In many ways, if you or your company is already doing things ethically, this book won’t bring anything particuarly new to the party, even though it will still validate what you are doing and reinforce best practice. It remains an important, essential read in any case, whether your company desperately needs to move along with its ethical journey or whether it is already leading the pack. This book is packed full of information, a harmonious mix of theory and actionable practical advice. It veers every-so-slightly towards being a bit too academic in style or nature, which can reduce the focus of the general reader, yet it remains engaging, authoritative and concentrates on the matters at hand. The book does not resort to hyperbole or over-use of emotion to underline why a certain course of action is highly recommended. It lets the information speak for itself. It does not read like a “student politics” book on steroids thankfully. The authors acknowledge that the world of business obviously has winners and losers, a business needs to make a profit to survive at the end of the day, yet how the profit is achieved and at what cost to everybody else still is important. You can do the right thing by people in business without compromising your principles. As is common with Kogan Page books, the reader is treated to a great, detailed index and a mass of bibliographic notes that will direct the curious towards source material and extra reading. You can dive in as deep as you like! This sort of feature can make a big difference, believe it or not, especially when you are really engaged with the book and its contents. In short, this was an enjoyable read into a subject that, it must be said, is important but hardly going to be something you will probably actively seek out to read ahead of lighter, more pleasurable matters. It has the capability of being a frequently consulted companion, even if you are doing the right thing, at the right time for the right reasons.

In September, 2015 President Barack Obama informed The Forward, in a historic interview, of his shock at learning of the closing of his favorite NYC Bagel eatery, H&H Bagels, in January of 2012. While the President was shocked by the closing of the world's most famous, and recognizable, bagel brand, what was truly shocking were the underlying facts and circumstances surrounding the closing. While most people knew H&H as the iconic, Upper West Side Bagel Shop where the lines rounded the block, where celebrities loved to frequent, and where one of the most popular Seinfeld television episodes was created, few people knew about the drama and decadence that existed behind the scenes of this NYC landmark. The Rise and Fall of H&H Bagels takes you on a journey that starts with the fulfillment of the American Dream and ends in contested, five year Bankruptcy. This is the outrageous, true, story of a man who defied the odds and became an American legend, and then defied logic and the law by dismantling his beloved Empire. The story of H&H Bagels is not only the story of the rise and fall of a thriving American business, it is a story of intrigue, economics, corruption, and resiliency, as told, with humor, from the perspective of the one man who lived through it all- its National Business Manager and right hand to the man at the top of the H&H Empire, Helmer Toro.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read, Eat, Sleep. Repeat. By Manuel Mattz I may not always read great books; but when I do, I read Dos Pintos. Stay thirsty for literature, my friend. Hehehe. Now, that I broke the ice with a metaphorical wrecking ball, I can comfortably be frank in my review. To be clear, I can only say why I enjoyed the book—Apex. If you connect/relate with the things that I find interesting, then perhaps you should purchase a copy too. I will do my best to briefly explain my likes and dislikes, without spoiling much (if any) of the story. First of all, the author does very well with his research and detail. As a 3rd year physics and math major, I cannot help but feel a bit nerdy re-reading certain technical sentences and chuckling with glee. Secondly, the amount of suspense drove the story in a very alluring manner. I found myself reading past the amount of pages I usually do—just because I wished to see “what would happen next (45-50 pages a day, more if I like the book).” I also liked how the main character had relatable flaws and traits, he was somebody who I could picture being in his shoes. The humanity/realism of that character, among specific others, assisted in enveloping me into the plot. Lastly, I liked the main theme that the author used throughout the novel. To slightly elaborate, a variation of this scenario could occur someday given the fast expansion in technology within recent years. My physics professor always told me that, as scientists, we are not allowed to believe in impossibilities, if the need is great enough. Those are the main characteristics of this book that I wished to praise. There are not any particular flaws of the novel that I can think to point out, with the exception of one. I despised a character so much, that I wanted him/her (I refuse to be specific, for the sake of not spoiling the story) to suffer. And, I wished the author would have prolonged his/her punishment in depth. (Actually, imagining his/her anguished facial expressions and that look of failure was very satisfactory to me). However, this is a criticism greatly influenced by my preference to see justice forced on those who do unforgivable things. On the other hand, the fact that a character in Pinto’s book incited such emotion in a reader actually speaks very well of his creation. If there are other flaws, I, either, cannot think of them, or they are too minor/picky to mention in such a brief review. I hope that this review held an informative and enlightening atmosphere concerning Pinto’s novel. Overall, I would give it a 90%, based upon my own tastes and its ability to keep me hooked. I rate things using my own simple key: 100%-81% is 5 stars, 80%-61% is 4 stars, and so forth. Lastly, based upon his interests in this genre and writing style, the author seems like the kind of individual you could drink a root bear with and discuss scientific topics for hours. Not relevant, but I just thought I should share my impression of the author as well. End Transmission.-Manuel

Apex is his first novel and one I have helped him polish into the fine novel that it is. The book has come along way from it's first drafts and is solid read.If you enjoy plausible Earth-based Sci-fi, this book is for you. You will not be disappointed.

This book is great for first time cruisers, which I am. This book answered all of the questions that I had, and some!

By Wulfstan Indispensable, exhaustively complete, well written, entertaining and fun. Reading this book will be a great start to going on a Disney Cruise (note- they are not just for parents with kids!) or for deciding whether or not to book such a Magical cruise (Warning, the answer will likely be YES! after you read this guide!).A few interesting sections include: Cost Considerations, Reassuring Words for Reluctant Cruisers, The Ten Best Bangs for Your Buck, what to pack and bring, a whole section on motion sickness and Travelers Tummy (I'll add here to bring along Ginger, like Gin-Gins or the tasty Altoid Ginger mints, and to take Probiotics), the Various Live Shows, Internet Issues and Tips, the various Ports and Embarkation centers, and so forth.Honestly I did not know Disney cruised to so many areas- not only the Caribbean, but Europe, Alaska, etc.The book can be funny too: "Coffee- the swill at the beverage stations can best be described as a tepid, vaguely coffee-flavored substance that may make you question your will to live". Fortunately, Len Testa follows that up with some great tips for coffee lovers.

We sailed the Disney Dream for 4 nights. Purchasing this book beforehand and reading it page by page was a tremendous help in knowing what to do and when to do it. A HUGE thank you to the authors, because this book saved us! I even packed it and took it on the cruise with us because I knew I'd refer often to it, and sure enough, I did! We plan on sailing The Fantasy in a couple of years, and I will definitely purchase the updated version before we go!

The scene at the LA Zoo is hilarious By Richard Wills Volume 3 of the Nanites saga impresses me with the author.s skill at developing a complex storyline. As in his previous creations, Dosher's characters are realistic people , dealing with totally unexpected life changes. Even the non-human characters are amazing. The scene at the LA Zoo is hilarious! I look fore-word with un-a-baited breath for future releases from this writer's smokin' hot keyboard.

By Riverwolf The third instalment of The Nanites saga is a wonderful continuation of the previous two books and just adds more layers to this epic Imagining. It has everything you could ask for in a great book. The characters are well developed and the World is believably presented, as is part of the author's trademark. Yet another keeper from the mind of James M. Dosher.

In 1952 as UFOs appear across the nation, sixteen-year-old Allana Odette Blair is visited and marked. Still suffering from grief after accidentally killing her twin brother on December 7, 1941, she is considered unstable. Disbelieved and diagnosed with the Alice-in-Wonderland syndrome—after all, anyone claiming to have encountered small grey creatures and who continues to see an ever changeable dead is unable to separate reality from fantasy—she is lured into a relentless game that takes her through portals to other dimensions, Allana struggles to find her place in a world threatened more by human frailties than alien strength. In this allegorical tale of grief, Allana discovers all is not what it seems, not in the universe, politics, science or religion. A psychological fantasy, this novel is based on actual events and includes Book Club discussion prompts. Appropriate for age 13 to adult.

By pikeplace MaryAnn Easley's Changed in the Night opens with the flashback of a tragic event followed by a shock wave of grief that forever changes the life of the protagonist, Allana Blair. The story fast-forwards to the early 1950's when UFO sightings are on the rise and sixteen-year-old Allana witnesses bizarre paranormal activity. In question is her mental stability: Has she truly been touched by otherworldly phenomena, or has her grief pushed her over the edge? Allana's story spans two worlds: a fantasy world of fog-veiled forests and crystal ice caves, and the sentient world of reality. The beauty of Changed in the Night is how the author seamlessly weaves these separate realities into one as a desperate Allana Blair struggles to reconcile her grief.

Easley brings to life each character as if they are in the room talking to you. In the time and place the action is set, she is true to the very expressions they used, old and young alike. As a reader who was there at that time, I was enchanted. Her research and grasp of the time and place is impeccable. Just to relive those days is equal to the praise. But the story of the fictional girl in her fictional circumstances is equally as fascinating. MaryAnn has put together a "true Alice in Wonderland" story in a setting equally as unreal. I give it more than 5 stars and I don't give many fictions that kind of recognition.

Jeanne DuPrau's The City of Ember meets Louis Sachar's Holes in this imaginative and hilarious middle grade novel from New York Times bestselling author Michael Perry.

When the world started to fall apart, the government gave everyone two choices: move into the Bubble Cities…or take their chances outside. Maggie's family chose to live in the world that was left behind. Deciding it's time to grow up and grow tough, Maggie rechristens herself "Ford Falcon"—a name inspired by the beat-up car she finds at a nearby junkyard. Ford's family goes to this junkyard to scavenge for things they can use or barter with the other people who live OutBubble. Her family has been able to survive this brave new world by working together. But when Ford comes home one day to discover her home ransacked and her family missing, she must find the strength to rescue her loved ones with the help of some unlikely friends.

The Scavengers is a wholly original tween novel that combines an action-packed adventure, a heartfelt family story, and a triumphant journey of self-discovery in a world where one person's junk is another person's key to survival. Katherine Applegate, author of the Newbery Medal winner The One and Only Ivan, raves "Michael Perry pulls out all the stops in this colorful tale."

The Scavengers, by Michael Perry

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Perry creates a version of the future where climate change and the threat of terrorism are wreaking havoc on the world. The government has partnered with the CornVivia Corporation to control corn production after seizing all the farmland in the country through eminent domain. Yet citizens beg the government to do something to protect everyone. The government responds by creating Bubble Cities—domed, protected cities. The corn that the CornVivia Corporation grows is called URCorn and is genetically modified to cure "cancer and diabetes and baldness and bad skin and arthritis and pretty much whatever ails you." For those families, like Maggie's, that chose to live "Out Bubble," they work very hard to survive off of the less-desirable land. Maggie's family is lucky—when they finally find a place to settle after drifting for a few years, they end up with Toad and Arlinda as neighbors. Toad and Arlinda take Maggie, her parents, and her little brother Henry under their wing teaching them about gardening, wild plants, pig latin, and spoonerisms. Both jargons are explained in the book, and for the most part, decoding the words isn't difficult; struggling readers may get distracted. One day Maggie comes home to find it ransacked and her entire family missing. She makes it her mission to find them. The unique and interesting cast of multidimensional primary and secondary characters are the narrative's strength. The portrayal of the government and corporations is not flattering, and at times the political message overwhelms the plot. However, this was an enjoyable read and Maggie is a strong, brave, adventurous, and resourceful role model for younger readers.—Amy Commers, South St. Paul Public Library, MN

Review “Michael Perry pulls out all the stops in this colorful tale. You gotta love Ford Falcon, an intrepid heroine who can pepper-bomb a solar bear while quoting Emily Dickinson. As her friend Toad might say: Le-dightful.” (Katherine Applegate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Newbery Medal book The One and Only Ivan)“This brave, smart, funny, independent young hero is totally unlike anyone I’ve seen before, and she uses her wits to survive in a world unlike anything I could have dreamt up.” (Wendy Mass, New York Times bestselling author of The Candymakers)“Gifted and gritty, Ford Falcon is a heroine with heart. She grabs you by both arms and hauls you into her world—a haunting futurescape where you have to be inventive to survive, where every decision has a price. Michael Perry’s writing is exquisite, humorous and thrilling.” (Leslie Connor, author of Waiting for Normal)“A fast-paced, post-apocalyptic Laura Ingalls Wilder wilderness story. Comparisons to other gritty, engaging tough-girl-with-a-strong-moral-compass stories are inevitable, but Maggie has originality and grit to spare.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Ford Falcon capably demonstrates how a smart, determined kid might handle the end of the world and her place in it.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)“Unique and interesting cast of characters. Maggie is a strong, brave, adventurous, and resourceful role model for younger readers.” (School Library Journal)

From the Back Cover

I wedged my fists on my hips and I announced that Maggie was yesterday, and from this day forward I would answer only to Ford Falcon.

When the world fell apart, most people moved into the Bubble Cities. After her parents chose to live OutBubble, Maggie decided it was time to grow up and grow tough. She's renamed herself Ford Falcon, and she spends her days scavenging in a junkyard while fending off occasional attacks from solar bears and GreyDevils.

Although times are hard, Ford's family has been making do. But when she returns from a bartering trip to find her home ransacked and her family gone, Ford must prove she is brave enough to face this wild world alone and overcome whatever obstacles stand in the way of rescuing her loved ones.

I was a bit skeptical about how his children's book might turn out since a majority of his books geared toward adults arise from his own life. I was not disappointed. I liked this book because, although it follows the dystopian genre, it remains hopeful. There is very little violence, likable characters and an underlying positive message not only for child readers but adult readers as well. For those readers who like violence, darkness and despair, this is not your book. It is instead for those readers who enjoy a bit of Laura Ingalls Wilder mixed with some Emily Dickenson and that no nonsense girl everyone knew when growing up. Your child will learn a lot from this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A titillating novel By Night Owl Reviews Scavengers, by Michael Perry, is a titillating novel. ‘Ford Falcon’ is a favorite character of mine. It’s amazing how this young adult copes with the things going on in her life. Survival is a hot topic these days and this depiction of life in the future will surely make one think. What would I do? The journey this story takes is just far out there enough to be real, and that’s what makes it scary. We all like to think we’d protect the younger generation, but in a sense we’d need them to protect us. Ford Falcon’s reaction to her environment is not only interesting, but fun. The fact that she named herself after a car she found is one of the many incidents I love. From start to finish and young to old, all will love how the characters interact with one another. How they adapt to their surroundings is ingenious. This one will grab you from page one…and keep you ‘til the end.Review by: Pamela RobinsonDisclosure: Review copy from the publisher for an honest review.

Brantley Bookworm SpeaksThe Scavenger’s by Michael Perry****The Story: When the world started to fall apart, the government gave everyone two choices: move into the Bubble Cities . . . or take their chances outside. Maggie's family chose to live in the world that was left behind. Deciding it's time to grow up and grow tough, Maggie rechristens herself "Ford Falcon"—a name inspired by the beat-up car she finds at a nearby junkyard. The same junkyard where Ford's family goes to scavenge for things they can use and barter with the other people who live OutBubble. Her family has been able to survive this brave new world by working together. But when Ford comes home one day to discover her home ransacked and her family missing, she must find the strength to rescue her loved ones with the help of some friends. The Good: What sets this book apart from the endless myriad of dystopia fiction up for grabs is the setting. The world outside doesn't feel like a barren wasteland. It is an abandoned world that has returned to nature but not the same nature as before. What many writers tend to forget is that nature is more resilient than we think. Everyone though Hiroshima and Chernobyl would be lifeless wastelands but soon the grass grew back. The nature of humanity is well done too. The contrast between the bubble cities and guarded corn fields and the life of the outsiders can draw parallels to contemporary society. The world Ford Falcon lives in is constructed beautifully. It is a secondhand world but it lives and breathes in a way that seems very tangible. The characters that Ford Falcon encounter are well-written and seem like the kind of character’s one would encounter in a post-apocalyptic world when the societal pressures to conform have fallen away. It’s also to the book’s credit that Ford Falcon has her whole family with her. All too often the cliche is that the main character is an orphan or comes from a single parent household. Ford Falcon is with her mother and father and younger brother. All of them are fully realized characters or at least realized enough for the protagonist of that age. The mother is a particularly compelling character, whose sense of loss of the world she knew is quite tangible within the narrative. Her love of books is a very nice touch as well.Ford Falcon’s younger brother is really more of a side character than anything else, but he is unique in how he seems to be autistic. That’s fairly rare in this kind of fiction and serves as another level of challenge for the main character. No spoilers but the books ending is definitely not what most would expect. It is almost shocking and completely different from books in this genre. It may be setting up the possibility for sequels but the unorthodox ending alone is why fans of all ages should read this book. The Flaws: While the setting is very strong, the background on the other hand is lacking. The exact nature of what exactly caused the world to fall apart is somewhat vague. Throughout the book there are mentions of global warming, terrorism, genetically altered food and paranoia run amok but no concrete explanation. While it is to the author’s credit that he doesn’t utilize exposition, a more clear story of how the world came to be would be preferred. Again perhaps it is being saved for sequels. The villains are kind of weak. We get no real sense of their motivations and they are given names by the character which fit, but frankly are too childish to really take seriously. Perhaps that is the point. This book is good for breaking several tropes found in this genre but it falls into one that is very common and frankly overdone: the zombie trope. Throughout the book there is this lingering threat of mutated beasts that were once human and could overrun them at anytime. Done to death is what that is. The sad reality is, humanity doesn’t need zombies, gangs of normal humans could do exactly what happens in the book easily. Even the “science” explaining how they came to be is kind of flimsy. The author seemed to make an attempt to explain how they mutated in a somewhat realistic fashion but fell short and was not even vague enough to utilize handwavium. It wasn’t needed in the beginning anyway.Final Verdict: The Scavenger’s is a unique take on popular genre that is worth a read no matter the age group.Four out Five Starsthecultureworm.blogspot.com
