The Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania is Africa's oldest and largest protected area. Proclaimed in 1896, and bigger than Switzerland, the Selous is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Selous remains one of Africa's largest and greatest undisturbed ecosystems, teeming with life including one of the largest elephant populations remaining on the African continent, large packs of wild dogs, vast herds of buffalo as well as more lions than any other protected area on the continent as reported by National Geographic in August 2013. New York-born photographer Robert J. Ross has spent much of the past six years photographing in this vast and difficult to access reserve. He has compiled more than 100,000 images showing all aspects of the reserve's varied landscapes, seasons, flora and large and small fauna. The spectacular large-format photography book features a selection of the very best images including landscapes, wildlife portraits and behavior, night photography, impressionist style work and breath-taking aerials.

Review The Selous in Africa: A Long Way From Anywhere, features nearly 400 photographs of this extraordinary place. The images showcase not only the large mega-fauna typically seen in a photographic book on African wildlife, but also the fantastic and often overlooked smaller creatures, birds, insects, and dramatic landscapes. (Africa Geographic Magazine, January 29, 2016/Issue 83)...filled with his vibrant portraits of animals and landscapes from one of Africa's last truly wild places. (Emily Silber Audobon.org, December 2, 2015)...the story of the Selous Game Reserve is best experienced through Ross' outstanding photography. The images have been selected from over 100,000 photographs shot over four years. The Selous in Africa – A Long Way From Anywhere will be an excellent addition to your library! (Africa Indaba, December 2015)I hope Robert Ross's record of the Selous, its unique ecosystems and diverse wildlife, will both inspire and educate. Enjoy this book and share it, for its message is important―a document of the natural world and a reminder that it is ours to protect (Alexander Rhodes, CEO, Stop Ivory)[Ross'] stunning images inventory the magnificent biodiversity of the continent's oldest protected wilderness as well as the threats it now faces. (John Burnett NPR.org, December 2015)...a stunning visual journey of one of Africa's largest protected areas.... Indeed the breadth and beauty of [Ross'] photos are a testament to why this natural treasure is worth preserving. (Dexter Cirillo Aspen Sojourner, Midwinter/Spring2016)This is one of the special African books not only because it is of a unique location, but because the photographic images are unusual and so well done. (Noella Ballenger Apogee Photo, April 2016)

So we had been waiting anxiously for it to come to print. Rob has fully captured the essence and the beauty of this wonderful game reserve. His photos of the animals and landscapes bring The Selous to life in stunning color and in incredibly real life "Kodak" moments. This book is simply spectacular!!!

This book is more than a collection of photographs but a story about Africa and its irreplaceable heritage. Rob's passion and commitment to conservation and wildlife come through in his work - the beauty and complexity of the planet and the fragility of our world.
