In the land of Prydain, evil is never far away. Arawn, Lord of the Land of Death, has been building an army of dark warriors to take over Prydain, and the only way to stop him is to destroy the Black Cauldron he uses to create his dreaded soldiers. Taran the Assistant Pig-Keeper and his loyal companions must journey deep into Arawn's domain to destroy the Black Cauldron. For each of them, the quest has a special meaning. For Taran, it is the glorious opportunity to use his first sword in battle. But war requires a sacrifice greater than he'd ever imagined. . . .

“* The same characteristics that made the first book so rich are again present--a fine flow of words; an intricate, active plot; an admirable balance between the forces of black and white magic. . . . Once-in-a-lifetime reading that will assure Prydain a permanent place in geographies of fictional territories. ” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review
“Taran, the gallant Assistant Pig-Keeper, and his companions once again fare forth to destroy the evil that threatens their beloved country, Prydain. . . . A wise and wondrous tale written in epic fashion.” ―Booklist

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Lovely hardcover, but a bit pricey By Stuart Dunn This review is for those who are familiar with the plot and story of The Black Cauldron. This is the second book from The Chronicles of Prydain to be released in a 50th Anniversary edition, with the first being The Book of Three. This is a hardcover book with a textured cover, which just feels good in your hands and something an e-book could never replicate. The pages are deckle-edged, which are back in fashion, and give the book an old-timey feel. A lot of people love these types of pages, including my wife, but I am not a fan, as I just feel like the pages are going to shred as I turn them. Newberry Award winning author Rebecca Stead provides an introduction to the 50th Anniversary Edition. There is also a bonus section at the end of the book, which includes the always-helpful pronunciation guide, three letters from Lloyd Alexander to his editor Ann Durrell, and the short story "The Foundling." I was pleased to see another short story included at the end, like they did for the 50th Anniversary of The Book of Three. So should you buy this book? If you are a huge Prydain fan, then you will want this for your collection. If you are an average fan or just someone looking for a good story to read, then I would say buy it if the price is right. Otherwise, you could get the entire paperback boxed set for the price of this one book. I am glad to have this in my library, and I hope the publisher will continue to release the final three books in 50th Anniversary Editions over the next three years.
