Taran the Assistant Pig-Keeper and his loyal companions must journey deep into Arawn's domain to destroy the Black Cauldron. For each of them, the quest has a special meaning. Review

“* The same characteristics that made the first book so rich are again present--a fine flow of words; an intricate, active plot; an admirable balance between the forces of black and white magic. . . . Once-in-a-lifetime reading that will assure Prydain a permanent place in geographies of fictional territories. ” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Taran, the gallant Assistant Pig-Keeper, and his companions once again fare forth to destroy the evil that threatens their beloved country, Prydain. . . . A wise and wondrous tale written in epic fashion.” ―Booklist

This is the second book from The Chronicles of Prydain to be released in a 50th Anniversary edition, with the first being The Book of Three. This is a hardcover book with a textured cover, which just feels good in your hands and something an e-book could never replicate. The pages are deckle-edged, which are back in fashion, and give the book an old-timey feel. A lot of people love these types of pages, including my wife, but I am not a fan, as I just feel like the pages are going to shred as I turn them. Newberry Award winning author Rebecca Stead provides an introduction to the 50th Anniversary Edition. There is also a bonus section at the end of the book, which includes the always-helpful pronunciation guide, three letters from Lloyd Alexander to his editor Ann Durrell, and the short story "The Foundling." I was pleased to see another short story included at the end, like they did for the 50th Anniversary of The Book of Three. So should you buy this book? If you are a huge Prydain fan, then you will want this for your collection. If you are an average fan or just someone looking for a good story to read, then I would say buy it if the price is right. Otherwise, you could get the entire paperback boxed set for the price of this one book. I am glad to have this in my library, and I hope the publisher will continue to release the final three books in 50th Anniversary Editions over the next three years.

Review ''Westly unites the insect and spider worlds and saves the day. Rich language paints lush images of life under the glass, and the author's illustrations capture the characters' cartoonish charm.'' --Booklist''Westly's The Ugly Duckling twist is actually perfect for younger kids who are not quite sure where they fit into this world. Westly learns there's nothing wrong with being different. In fact, it is our differences that allow each of us to contribute in our own way. An insightful and fun read-aloud story about honesty, courage and individual worth.'' --Middle Shelf magazine

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. It's a great book, with a good message for kids, and very entertaining. By S.Staley I was very excited to read Westly: A Spider's Tale to my 2nd grade class. I have to say, they were enchanted from the first chapter. They really loved the characters and they also liked the different voices I used as I read the novel to them. This book is perfect for the age group I teach, 7-8 year olds. They couldn't wait each day until after lunch when it was time for Read-Aloud. They all groaned when I ended a chapter and put the book away to do something else. They learned the main message from the book, {which impressed me} without me telling them.I decided to have my class help me write this review. When we finished the book, I had them write down what they liked the most about Westly. Who better to see how kids liked the book than hear from kids themselves? So here is what they had to say, at least those who turned their paper in...{There may be some spoilers here :) and the spelling has been corrected in order for you to read their comments. ;) }Beckett: "My favorite character was the raven. I liked the book because Westly became a hero and saved all the insects."Cole: "My favorite characters were Westly, Zug Zug and the Raven."Ava: "I like when Westly turns into a spider. My favorite characters is Zug Zug the fly."Gretta: "My favorite part was when Wesley was in the menagerie and he almost died, but it was super, duper sad...I would think every body would like Westly. It is awesome; my favorite book!Ty: "Westly learned being different was fine."Serg: "I learned that at the end Westly became King of the menagerie."Aryianna: "I learned it doesn't matter if someone is different. I just love Westly. It's a good book!"Brooklyn: "I liked the part where Westly's dad hugs him. I want to share it with my friends."Evan: "I liked that we don't have to be sad if we are different. I like the book because it is exciting!"Brody: "I liked the story because of the moth...you should buy it and Westly."Lillian: "I loved when Westly stuck up for his friends, even the raven. I recommend 2nd grade and up will like this book."Jaslene: "I like Westly and Zug Zug. They live in the menagerie. I recommend it."Edison: "I love Westly and the Raven KIng and learned that different is good. The story was very funny...a good book for all ages."Will: "I learned that you should never give up."Charlie: "Westly was a very good spider. I like how he got the key from the worms."Dyson: "My favorite characters were Westly, Zug Zug, the worms, the raven and the dragonfly."Owen W. "I liked the pictures. It is a good story. You should read it."Jordan: "The raven was scary and they all looked awesome. I liked it!" So there you have it! It's a great book, with a good message for kids, and very entertaining. So from my 2nd grade class, they recommend this book to other kids.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sweet story about growing up different. By Heidi Grange In a sweet story about finding one's place and overcoming mistakes, Westly takes the reader from the beautiful chandelier where the butterflies live to the dirt far below where the gardeners live and work. Westly starts the story as a puny young caterpillar looking forward to his changing day. As the son of the ruling Monarch butterfly, he is used to being treated as royalty. But when his changing turns him into a spider he runs away feeling like he no longer belongs. But he doesn't really feel like he belongs below with the 'dirt eaters' either, at least not until Raven starts teaching him about what it means to be a spider. Westly longs to return the favor for his friend Raven, but it turns out that Raven has other motives and Westly has to race to undo his mistake. Not only is this a great story about growing up and finding one's place in the world, it's also a story about the power of differences and learning to work together. The illustrations included by the author add a really nice touch (Westly is the cutest spider I've ever seen). This is a great book for young readers who enjoy animal stories or stories about growing up and making mistakes. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, although there were times when I wanted to give Westly some advice seeing as how he doesn't really have anyone to help him once he leaves home. Like many of us, Westly learns a lot the hard way despite his best efforts.

You'll quickly fall in love with the charming illustrations that accompany the tale. Even though I am not the age group it is intended for, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! I'm so grateful for a wholesome story that is engaging and full of so many good values. Well done!

In the year 2088, the Pacific Alliance and the Democratic Federation are on the verge of total war. Space has been heavily militarized. Both sides have developed exotic missiles and an elaborate network of communication satellites, reconnaissance satellites, orbiting battlestations, and space stations. In addition, America and Japan have established a permanent base on the moon. Alliance space fighters are based there. From Copernicus Moon Base, space fighter pilot Sky West and his crew are sent on a special recon mission. They witness a Federation missile tear through space at unbelievable speed. Suddenly, the Russians and Germans seem to have a decisive military advantage. General John Terry, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Space, receives an intelligence report. The Federation intends to deploy the new missile aboard their space stations and the hyper-fast missiles will carry nuclear warheads, breaking the Space Treaty that prohibits nuclear weapons in space. General Terry knows he must take action. War seems inevitable.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good and bad By William S. Morris Weird mixture of well thought out adventure and totally ridiculous cartoonishness. There is opposition between what is essentially the U.S. and Russia. The Russians are those cartoon characters of the fifties. The Americans do those ridiculous things associated with bloated bureaucracy. There's also the typical disagreement between military and the civilians with the military coming off better in this case. For a bit I thought we were getting a modernization of the Cuban missile crises. Complete with the dispute between Kennedy and Lemay, but no. The story breaks down to a typical beat the bad guys scenario. There were some wrong words to the extent I was beginning to think the author used words he was unfamiliar with. Also the author is unfamiliar with crew speak to the point that he used Roger frequently and wrongly. There were other examples, but they could be explained away as artistic license in order to make the language more understandable.

Please note I only read the Sample By lidias kindle I only read the sample but that's what they are there for; to see if the book is worth paying for.To me not. I love sci fi and have read thousands over the years. One thing I have a problem with is the way the earth is supposed to look in app. 70 years from now.It just seems way off the mark to me; I.e. The population jumps from currently 7 billion to 12 billion,We have settled on the moon and have earth to space flights as easy as a couple of hours, Germany siding with Russia in a war against the USA and Japan.I don't feel this is very realistic or well thought out considering current world affairs. Then again I might beTotally wrong. Also the pace is too slow with many pages spent on useless information that doesn't add to the storyline.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Slow-paced but the action at the end was worth waiting for By Catherine Mackay The Spacemen was a fairly entertaining read, though the pacing was slow and most of the action occurred in the last third of the book. The characters were not well developed, many felt more like caricatures, particularly the Russians who were the bad guys in the novel - 'the Russian Bear' feeling aggreved at American/Japanese dominance. My other issue was that the story itself left me with the impression that the men and women in space were a bunch of gorgeously beautiful/handsome individuals who were randy even when they were supposed to be working - I frankly got tire of reading about the guys looking at the seriously 'gorgeous curvy women who smelt good and they felt a stirring in there loins' - not particularly professional when there is a threat of all out nuclear war between Russia/Germany and the Americans/Japanese. Frankly I felt it detracted from the tension of the build up to war. Aside from flat characters and randy spacemen/spacewomen, the book wasn't too bad. The last third of the book the author did a great job describing the space battle and the attack on the American space-station, Vigilence; the setting of Earth in the latter part of the 21st century was interesting with most of the tech, space-ships and weaponary been a relistic extrapolation of what is in existence now. Overall, the author did manage to keep my attention sufficiently in order to find out what became of the characters and the countries involved in the war.

It was a great reminder of many things I already knew but Rachel had a refreshing way of bringing those things back to the forefront of my mind. It's obvious that Rachel has created a life for her and her family that works and she is anxious to share those suggestions with her readers. If you're looking for more freedom in your life, and really who isn't, then you'll get some useful tips and tools to create more of what you want in both your life and your business. I especially liked when Rachel realized that she was experiencing what she had defined as a "perfect day" in her life. Sometimes we just need to reflect on where we are instead of bemoaning where we aren't. That reminder alone was more than worth the price of the book.

But more importantly, they all are filled with essential life lessons parents want to instill in their children. "Kevin's Birthday Turtle" is another case in point. Sally bring the magical world of the sea and all its creatures to life in this story of a young boy and his sea turtle. As the boy learns, all creatures must be treated with care and compassion. Another important message for children taught in a perfectly charming way!

I have an affinity with turtles having seen one that was as big as I am in the sea once, eating off a large rock. I started reading the teaser for this book and actually found myself saying -- what happens?! what happens!? Thank you for writing such a sweet tale about love and care that helps me inspire my kids to create compassion for the beauty around them.

It is a good teaching tool and it opens the door for a talk on the subject of caring not only of their teeth, but of their whole bodies. A good and useful book, adorned with adorable illustrations and amusing rhymes.

Good opening and closing lines at networking. It starts with really obvious advise like 'smile' and 'dress appropriately' then move on to the 31 openings... Literally 31 lines, lame things like 'good thing they got sushi here'Closing lines are slightly better but still nothing good, basically lots of repeats with two lines literally repeated, and again lame lines like 'it's past my bedtime' ...I'll go try to demand a refund now, not sure if i can but it's definitely not worth it even if it was free.

Earth is facing an interstellar invasion that it does not know is coming and for which it can't provide a defense. The Antoran people were able to escape from the invasion since they had adequate warning and an advanced technology to allow it. Antorans were able to travel considerably faster than the invaders so they used that to put some distance between themselves and the invaders. This occurred some 500 years ago but now the invaders are coming toward Earth. The Antorans have the equipment to withstand the invasion but they are incapable of firing defensive or offensive weapons. They can build the equipment but can't use it, so they are looking for someone who can. The Antorans have had Earth under surveillance for more than 400 years with part of its cloaked (invisible) fleet of spaceship/stations. The spaceship/stations are immense constructs, the prototype is 260 miles long by 60 miles in diameter. Smaller vessels are either 200 miles by 60 miles or 90 miles by 60 miles. They each carry a large fleet of warships. They have been looking for the right person to command their fleet and lead an effort to counter the coming invasion. They have determined that Henry (Hank) P. Stone is their best candidate and they proceed to recruit him. He must now build and train a force sufficient to man the Antoran ships and do it in time to meet the invasion force expected to arrive in 25 years. The necessary force will require tens of millions of persons so the task at hand is not an easy one. The Antoran technology is at least a thousand years more advanced than that of Earth but the Earth forces recruited must learn how best to use it. This is substantially supplemented by a growing telepathic capability. The question becomes, what happens when the technological difference in capability is so divergent that the choice of "kill or be killed" is no longer the only option on the table. Four other civilizations are located within 20 light years of Earth and these too are considered as potential sources of manpower to meet the invaders.

The main character (MC) has everything handed to him. Literally. There is no conflict or struggle for anything. For example, he gets promoted all the way up to major while working a desk job and displaying no particular talent for leadership. He retires but no worries he has a consultant position and trust to fall back on. And I can't forget the woman he asks to marry him the first second they meet and she agrees; the advanced degrees he 'earns' while sleeping; or the leadership of hundreds of thousands of alien warships after a brief conversation. No--too much disbelief to suspend. Don't waste your time.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. In depth world building, well thought out tech and fleet design, interspersed with a good concept for a story. By J. Parkes The concept and depth of planning for this world and story are pretty incredible...I think that this should have been refined and separated out into a couple of books instead of a single volume leaving time and space for more story and a more evenly paced approach to technology/asset introduction...i do admire the detail and asset planning that went into this work, the author clearly spent a lot of time and effort in his creation of this world and the technology behind it and that's good but it kind of interferes with the story being told by the way the information was delivered to the reader. This is typically handled with an appendix or a section of the book that can be referenced if the reader needs the details of a certain ship or station type freeing up the chapters of the book for telling the story and not explaining or describing in minute detail the tools, ships, and technologies in between character interactions and the events occurring.Overall i would recommend it for those sci fi fans who ok with glossing over certain sections i i've labelled 'spreadsheets'. I look forward to perhaps a revision and an expansion of the story as i was fascinated to see where it would go, i would also like to see a backstory more centered on the characters and their introduction and acclimation to the new technology provided to them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lackluster By Adel The main character was monotonous in the fact that he just went along with everything immediately. I mean who gets teleported to a freaking space ship, gets told he is mankind's last hope and future general of a space armada and just says OK. I have to say that there is a lack of emotion in the main and side characters. As exhibited when he first find's out his parents and grandparents are still alive. Instead of breaking down into disbelief and shock they just go into conversation about how awesome the ship is and what his role in everything is.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Now I just need the next book!! By Nicole Hewitt This review and many more can be found on my blog: Feed Your Fiction AddictionThis is the fifth book in the Broken World series, which I adore. This series is full of action and excitement and incredibly complex characters. This fifth installment lives up to the rest of the series. It focuses a lot more on Jon and Hadley, who got separated from the group in the last book. It was kind off refreshing to see something new. Jon and Hadley might be my two favorite characters now (though, of course, I’ll always love Axl and Vivian). Throughout the book, Jon really struggled with his guilt over what happened in Las Vegas. Hadley has completely forgiven him, but he can’t forgive himself nearly as easily. Now, more than anything, Jon wants to give Hadley a safe and secure future – or at least as close to that as is possible in their world! The only reason I’m not giving this book a “full” review is because I feel like I keep stating and restating my reasons for loving this series, and I start to sound a bit like a broken record. My one tiny criticism is that this installment didn’t feel quite as action packed as the others, but that also could have just been my more distracted state while reading it (I have a LOT going on lately). But I am SO excited that book six is coming out later this month!! I barely have to wait!!***Disclosure: This book was provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given and all opinions are my own.***

Things are looking up in some ways but in others they're still very difficult especially with the loss of so many people.Jon and Ginny don't know what happened to the rest of the group but in Hope Springs they have found a life.Times are tough as winter sets in but everyone is doing what they can to survive. The biggest questions come with the uncertainty of the future and what will happen down the road.I for one have become obsessed with this series, seeing how Vivian and all the others are doing surviving and what chalenges they might face next and what is just in general going on with them! You feel like you are a part of this world surviving right along with them, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This series is masterly amazing. By Kindle Customer This series I could not put down. I am not really the type to write a review but I had to. Ms. Mary has put a lot of effort in the characters. It is not the type of feel me good or all the characters never dies. I loved the ups and downs. I loved the flow of the story as it goes. I could not put the books down. I read all five books within 4 days. Ms Mary has really out done herself. She really brought me into the story like I am right there with them. I feel like I am part of the family. Fantastic Job. Can't wait for the next one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. awesome discovery By Amazon Customer sophisticated development of characters with depth, while remaining entertaining to read. Interesting complex of philosophical value systems which are approachable while unique, not the replayed stories we have all read, interesting. Author seems to have expertise in multiple areas. I am eager for the next in the series. I can tell the characters will become even more full with each edition. I appreciate the long term commitment to an epic with depth. This book builds relationships.

It’s in Copenhagen, home of Carlsberg Brewery, the statue of beloved author Hans Christian Andersen, the Little Mermaid and the Frederiksborg Palace.I’ve read a few of the author’s books, and like the way he structures it by starting off with a brief history, transport, the areas of the city, museums, art galleries, best coffee shops, bars, restaurants and special things to do. What I liked best about the book is the section at the end called A 3-Day Itinerary, which is a logical plan to see the vast majority of places and things covered in the book which is a great idea if you’re not sure where to start.

The author includes lodgings, restaurants and shopping, as well as when is the best time of year to visit Copenhagen. The author also gives transportation information, so you know the best form of transportation to arrive at your destination. A brief history accompanies the various sites, and areas of the city.

There is interesting and informative fashion info on the pages (about fabrics, patterns, styles, etc-). My 7-year-old daughter is actually learning a lot from it! There are more than enough stickers for each model, so there's flexibility in creating custom outfits and looks, which she likes a lot. (It's not just put sticker A in spot A.) The quality is great. The body types are realistic and not typically overdrawn models with bones protruding and exaggerated limb length, etc. I'm happy to let my daughter play with this. Highly recommend!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Exciting, fast paced and harrowing! Harper and Eli are back! By Donna I was fortunate to get an advanced copy of this book for honest review.I am a huge fan of Tarah Bennet's books and this series is perhaps my favorite. This is the fourth book in the series and is told from the perspectives of the characters, something I had to get used to, but it was a good choice. It allows you to really get to know each of them. Celdon's perspective was especially interesting, knowing his actions and what motivated him. This is a well written book, fast paced, with characters you care about. We find out more about Owen, whose perspective is also told by him.Harper is so close to her friends she is willing to dash into danger for them. Thank goodness Eli is there to help or to save her from herself.Eli and Harper each go through dangers to their lives. I don't want to spoil the plot for you so you will just have to read it. You won't be disappointed. If you have been following Eli and Harper, Celdon and Sawyer and Owen in the previous books this is a must read.I thought this would be the conclusion but as I saw the developments toward the end I could tell this was going to need another book at least. So there will be more adventures, dangers and life changers to come in this story. I am now waiting anxiously for the next book.

This one was devastating and wonderful and played on every emotion for the reader. The novel begins with Harper and Eli both in jail and ends when the compound is put on lockdown due to a potential outbreak of an unknown virus by the drifters who live out in the Fringe. Even worse, Harper's best friends are placed on lockdown away from her - Sawyer in the Medical Center after trying to stop the outbreak and Celdon in Systems. Harper, Eli and the other tier three workers are shoved outside, where they must not only survive the harsh conditions and potential radiation poisoning, but also the Drifters who are trying to kill them. The story grabs you and you won't want to put it down. I personally read all four books in less than a week because I was SO into the story. I can't wait for book 5. This book was also interesting because you hear the story from additional points of view. At first I wasn't sure if I would like hearing from Owen's point of view because, although he's a major part of the story, he has not been a particularly developed character. However, after reading his thoughts, I've grown to like him a lot more than I expected.

A lot of the characters have a "come to Jesus moment" and we really get to see them. I ended up loving Shane. The archetype was spot on. Genuis. I love how the author reminds you that everyone has a story. The characters are very well developed. Their conflicts become rather understandable. I was yelling at the pages. She doesn't skimp on content. I was a bit worried with how quickly the book came out but this was not a let down. I cannot wait to see what Sawyers parents are up to but I think maybe I have a good idea. ;-)I read this book in 2 days. I was heartbroken, intrigued, empathic, and excited as I flipped though these glorious pages. I cannot wait to see what she writes next. I'm already wondering what her next series is about. I can't get enough.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Abnett does it again By Doc Once more, Gaunt's Ghosts are participating in the liberation of a world from the forces of Chaos. This time, there are some very different major obstacles to overcome if they are to win.Phandine is an industrial world, and has been so for centuries. The planet has been so raped as to be uninhabitable save in extreme elevations, and even then the air is toxic and domes are required to survive. The planet is essential to the war effort through provision of fuel and similar necessary chemicals.Gaunt and Company are tasked with subduing one of three domes on one of the various habitats. As has come to be the norm for them, the Ghosts quickly find that their plans are not quite achievable. fortunately, they are masters of improvisation, and it helps to get a little precognition before the battle. While they always seem to be in hard-fought battles, this time they are facing some truly talented opposition in the Blood Pact. Not only these chaos troopers are after them, though, as there are aliens that have allied themselves with the Blood Pact in hating humanity. And since the Blood Pact have held this world for some time, you can be sure that they have prepared well to defend it.Abnett consistently puts out high-quality work. All the Gaunt's Ghosts novels are above par, and they are the best of the Warhammer 40k novels (only Abnett's Eisenhorn novels come close). If you have tried any of the other Ghosts novels, you'll find nothing in this one to disappoint.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Guns of Tanith lives up to the previous four Gaunt novels By A. Sandoc In this fifth installment of the Gaunt's Ghosts Saga, Abnett introduces us to the world of Phantine. Phantine is a world where everyone lives on aerial hive-installations which float above the toxic atmosphere that comprises most of the world. Phantine also seem to be a major contributer of promethium --- a form of fuel which is invaluable to the forces of the Imperium --- for the Sabbat Systems. It is also in this novel, Guns of Tanith, that Abnett introduces the Tanith's main opponent who are as skillful and disciplined a unit as Gaunt's own men: The Blood Pact. The Blood Pact is one of the better scifi creations I've ever read. This elite unit of Chaos-worshipping soldiers are almost the mirror-image of what the Tanith regiment has been described so far. Abnett's writing continues to impress and with the new location and its special environment, Abnett shows that he can write battle scenes that is not just a muddy, confusing amalgam of men fighting it out. Guns of Tanith showcases the Tanith's skills as elite, light infantrymen. This novel has more of a special-ops feel to it than the previous four novels. In the end, Guns of Tanith is another winner in Abnett's growing portfolio of scifi novels. I was wholly impressed and satisfied by this story and will continue on to the next novel in this series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Other great Gaunt's Ghosts novel by Dan Abnett By T. Harris The fifth book in the Gaunt's Ghosts series, and again we see the ghosts struggle with internal and external problems. The book starts off with the ghosts assigned to other impossible task; the task is a aerial assault over the world of Phantine. The world of Phantine is rich with promethium, pollution and loads of choas troops, the blood pact. Like all the other great Ghosts novels, Abnett takes little time in getting us into the action and turmoil. The guns of Tanith is one of the stronger books in the series, even with about a hundred pages in the middle with little to no action (I loved this part, by the way, this NOT sarcasim either), it still doesn't take away the intense level which all the other Ghost novels have. This is an awesome series and Guns of Tanith is other great addition. Highly recommend series.
