This time, there are some very different major obstacles to overcome if they are to win.Phandine is an industrial world, and has been so for centuries. The planet has been so raped as to be uninhabitable save in extreme elevations, and even then the air is toxic and domes are required to survive. The planet is essential to the war effort through provision of fuel and similar necessary chemicals.Gaunt and Company are tasked with subduing one of three domes on one of the various habitats. As has come to be the norm for them, the Ghosts quickly find that their plans are not quite achievable. fortunately, they are masters of improvisation, and it helps to get a little precognition before the battle. While they always seem to be in hard-fought battles, this time they are facing some truly talented opposition in the Blood Pact. Not only these chaos troopers are after them, though, as there are aliens that have allied themselves with the Blood Pact in hating humanity. And since the Blood Pact have held this world for some time, you can be sure that they have prepared well to defend it.Abnett consistently puts out high-quality work. All the Gaunt's Ghosts novels are above par, and they are the best of the Warhammer 40k novels (only Abnett's Eisenhorn novels come close). If you have tried any of the other Ghosts novels, you'll find nothing in this one to disappoint.

Sandoc In this fifth installment of the Gaunt's Ghosts Saga, Abnett introduces us to the world of Phantine. Phantine is a world where everyone lives on aerial hive-installations which float above the toxic atmosphere that comprises most of the world. Phantine also seem to be a major contributer of promethium --- a form of fuel which is invaluable to the forces of the Imperium --- for the Sabbat Systems. It is also in this novel, Guns of Tanith, that Abnett introduces the Tanith's main opponent who are as skillful and disciplined a unit as Gaunt's own men: The Blood Pact. The Blood Pact is one of the better scifi creations I've ever read. This elite unit of Chaos-worshipping soldiers are almost the mirror-image of what the Tanith regiment has been described so far. Abnett's writing continues to impress and with the new location and its special environment, Abnett shows that he can write battle scenes that is not just a muddy, confusing amalgam of men fighting it out. Guns of Tanith showcases the Tanith's skills as elite, light infantrymen. This novel has more of a special-ops feel to it than the previous four novels. In the end, Guns of Tanith is another winner in Abnett's growing portfolio of scifi novels. I was wholly impressed and satisfied by this story and will continue on to the next novel in this series.

Harris The fifth book in the Gaunt's Ghosts series, and again we see the ghosts struggle with internal and external problems. The book starts off with the ghosts assigned to other impossible task; the task is a aerial assault over the world of Phantine. The world of Phantine is rich with promethium, pollution and loads of choas troops, the blood pact. Like all the other great Ghosts novels, Abnett takes little time in getting us into the action and turmoil. The guns of Tanith is one of the stronger books in the series, even with about a hundred pages in the middle with little to no action (I loved this part, by the way, this NOT sarcasim either), it still doesn't take away the intense level which all the other Ghost novels have. This is an awesome series and Guns of Tanith is other great addition. Highly recommend series.
