In the year 2088, the Pacific Alliance and the Democratic Federation are on the verge of total war. Space has been heavily militarized. Both sides have developed exotic missiles and an elaborate network of communication satellites, reconnaissance satellites, orbiting battlestations, and space stations. In addition, America and Japan have established a permanent base on the moon. Alliance space fighters are based there. From Copernicus Moon Base, space fighter pilot Sky West and his crew are sent on a special recon mission. They witness a Federation missile tear through space at unbelievable speed. Suddenly, the Russians and Germans seem to have a decisive military advantage. General John Terry, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Space, receives an intelligence report. The Federation intends to deploy the new missile aboard their space stations and the hyper-fast missiles will carry nuclear warheads, breaking the Space Treaty that prohibits nuclear weapons in space. General Terry knows he must take action. War seems inevitable.

There is opposition between what is essentially the U.S. and Russia. The Russians are those cartoon characters of the fifties. The Americans do those ridiculous things associated with bloated bureaucracy. There's also the typical disagreement between military and the civilians with the military coming off better in this case. For a bit I thought we were getting a modernization of the Cuban missile crises. Complete with the dispute between Kennedy and Lemay, but no. The story breaks down to a typical beat the bad guys scenario. There were some wrong words to the extent I was beginning to think the author used words he was unfamiliar with. Also the author is unfamiliar with crew speak to the point that he used Roger frequently and wrongly. There were other examples, but they could be explained away as artistic license in order to make the language more understandable.

Please note I only read the Sample By lidias kindle I only read the sample but that's what they are there for; to see if the book is worth paying for.To me not. I love sci fi and have read thousands over the years. One thing I have a problem with is the way the earth is supposed to look in app. 70 years from now.It just seems way off the mark to me; I.e. The population jumps from currently 7 billion to 12 billion,We have settled on the moon and have earth to space flights as easy as a couple of hours, Germany siding with Russia in a war against the USA and Japan.I don't feel this is very realistic or well thought out considering current world affairs. Then again I might beTotally wrong. Also the pace is too slow with many pages spent on useless information that doesn't add to the storyline.

Slow-paced but the action at the end was worth waiting for By Catherine Mackay The Spacemen was a fairly entertaining read, though the pacing was slow and most of the action occurred in the last third of the book. The characters were not well developed, many felt more like caricatures, particularly the Russians who were the bad guys in the novel - 'the Russian Bear' feeling aggreved at American/Japanese dominance. My other issue was that the story itself left me with the impression that the men and women in space were a bunch of gorgeously beautiful/handsome individuals who were randy even when they were supposed to be working - I frankly got tire of reading about the guys looking at the seriously 'gorgeous curvy women who smelt good and they felt a stirring in there loins' - not particularly professional when there is a threat of all out nuclear war between Russia/Germany and the Americans/Japanese. Frankly I felt it detracted from the tension of the build up to war. Aside from flat characters and randy spacemen/spacewomen, the book wasn't too bad. The last third of the book the author did a great job describing the space battle and the attack on the American space-station, Vigilence; the setting of Earth in the latter part of the 21st century was interesting with most of the tech, space-ships and weaponary been a relistic extrapolation of what is in existence now. Overall, the author did manage to keep my attention sufficiently in order to find out what became of the characters and the countries involved in the war.
