The Secret Mission of William Tuck, by Eric Pierpoint

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—In 1781, 12-year-old William Tuck, son of a modest Virginia farmer, sees his older brother executed by a British firing squad. Rage and grief propel him to run away to join the militia as a drummer. Accompanied by Rebecca, the resourceful daughter of a captured patriot, he encounters notable figures from the Revolutionary period, including James Armistead and Peter Francisco. Together they smuggle a secret message to Gen. George Washington in Dobbs Ferry, thus securing victory at the Battle of Yorktown. A series of risky encounters gives them a crash course in spy rings and cryptography, and Rebecca's need to go undercover as a boy highlights gender roles of the time. The action is unrelenting, if sometimes repetitive, and the fast pace combined with nonstop violence and unflinching descriptions of unsavory aspects of 18th-century medicine and combat will engage readers who may not normally choose historical fiction. Instructive end notes provide an extension to the novel. Unfortunately, character development is limited, and some topics cry out for more nuance. For example, an encounter with the Seneca reveals that the protagonists view the Native Americans as "dangerous savages." Though the white protagonists' opinion is historically authentic, Pierpoint misses the opportunity to provide broader context for why some of the Seneca would side with the loyalists, and readers are left unaware of Washington's horrific reprisals. Similarly, the irony of repeated calls for freedom by slave-owning patriots is barely explored. VERDICT A purchase with kid appeal that should be balanced with offerings that provide broader perspectives.—Laura Simeon, Open Window School Library, WA

Kirkus, starred review" - Kirkus"The fast pace combined with nonstop violence and unflinching descriptions of unsavory aspects of 18th-century medicine and combat will engage readers who may not normally choose historical fiction. Instructive end notes provide an extension to the novel." - School Library Journal"The gruesomeness of war comes across vividly in this hard-hitting tale...A concluding background chapter will interest readers wanting more details of the war." - Booklist

From the moment William sees his brother killed and then runs off to join the patriot army, the action hardly lets up. When William inadvertently becomes a courier for a very important message things get even more exciting as he and his new ally, Rebecca (posing as Robert) set off to see the message delivered. But they have to wend their way through some very dangerous situations. The author does a nice job of integrating information from the time period into the story in a very unobtrusive way as William learns a bit more than he wanted to know about the spy/courier trade and it's dangers. The scene where William and Rebecca come across a slave being punished was a bit shocking but sadly accurate (William insists they help). "Hooking" wasn't a form of punishment that I was familiar with before reading this book and I found it a horrifying prospect (luckily, William and Rebecca manage to stop it before it happens). Because of this scene and other scenes involving death, I would say this book is most appropriate for older middle grade readers (5th grade and above). But the integration of facts from history with the struggles of William and Rebecca make for a very compelling story that moves surprisingly quickly as the two run into crisis after crisis (thank goodness for two strong horses and some allies along the way). For readers fascinated by the American Revolution and the important role that spies and couriers played in it, I can highly recommend this book.

Pierpoint brings two young voices into the game, with motivations both possible and plausible, a FUN historical fiction By Gaele William is a first-hand witness to the murder of his brother by British soldiers. The War of Independence is heating up, and William, in tandem with Rebecca, a daughter of an imprisoned spy, undertake a mission to deliver a message as they pose as ordinary, if young, colonials.Familiar and lesser known moments and scenes from history are chronicled: the HMS Jersey, Yorktown, even the soldier Peter Francisco all add depth and intrigue to the rather dry accounts of textbooks, and encourage you to read on. William and Rebecca are wonderful young protagonists, at 12 and 16 respectively, their determination and cleverness maneuvering through the pitfalls of war, double agents, danger and primitive living conditions intrigue and engage imagination. No battle for hearts or minds is ever truly won on the field: belief and support from all levels of society need be involved and heard. While we rarely hear of the many unknown who supported the fight for independence, Pierpoint brings two young voices into the game, with motivations both possible and plausible, and show that historical fiction can be fun and educational.I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

By Jennifer Malaret As the mother of a 7th grade advanced middle school reader girl, it is easy to see why “The Secret Mission of William Tuck” is a top releasing Children’s Historical Fiction book and how I found it to be remarkably entertaining for me as an adult. The story follows 12-year old protagonist William Tuck and the 16 year-old Rebecca, daughter of an imprisoned spy, as they dedicate themselves to delivering a secret message through both familiar and uncharted historical events of the Revolutionary War. Innovative twists in the plot line occur amongst seldom written about yet true events that involved The HMS Jersey prison ship, America’s greatest soldier Peter Francisco and the attack on Redoubts 9 and 10 in Yorktown. My daughter was immediately engrossed in this complex adventure filled with spies, double agents, battles (some graphic but not too graphic in nature) and loved the tale of two of her peers making a difference in America’s fight for freedom from suffocating British rule. The Secret Mission of William Tuck is an exhilarating coming of age tale for 4th-7th grade boys and girls and their parents.
