Disruption creates 10 times the opportunity to advance your organization and your career, according to former CEO and author Peter J. Boni. In All Hands on Deck: Navigating Your Team Through Crisis, Getting Your Organization Unstuck, and Emerging Victorious, Boni shows any leader or aspiring leader exactly what to do. Following his advice, recognition and rewards come quickly. It allows leaders with or without MBAs or Ivy League educations to leapfrog over those who have superior credentials or stronger ties to an old boys' network.

Beginning with the riveting, true story of Massachusetts clipper ship captain Josiah Nickerson Knowles, who saved his crew and all but one passenger during not one but two shipwrecks in the Pacific, author Peter J. Boni demonstrates how adversity should be embraced rather than avoided. Boni presents a proven process to overcome chaos and disorder. By interviewing himself as the CEO of embattled Safeguard Scientifics as well as five prominent C-suite executives who triumphed over difficulties in the fields of consumer products, health care, biotech, nonprofit, and academia, we understand the thinking and actions necessary to get and keep organizations out of trouble and onto solid ground.

The 12-Step Kedge-Off Process that Boni created is a blueprint for repositioning organizations and a model for any executive facing business dysfunctions and setbacks. The process is divided into three phases, each anchored with the easy-to-remember moniker the "ABCs to Advance": Boni would agree that you cannot prevent the storms that are inevitable in real-life situations. But with his ABCs to Advance as well as the instructive real-life stories of All Hands on Deck, we have a valuable guide for how to think in a crisis and how to cultivate the character traits to become an effective leader. While the techniques will get you out of a jam, use them early enough and they may very well keep you out of a jam.

How and why disruption can create ten times (10X) the nature and extent of opportunity to advance and succeed By Robert Morris As I began to reads this book, I was again reminded of the fact that most (if not all) senior-level executives would be well-advised to lead and manage as if their organization were involved in a turnaround. That is, make decisions with a lean mindset. I think this is what Andy Grove had in mind when suggesting that "only the paranoid survive," the title of his eponymous book. Grove has a two-step approach to making strategic decisions. The first step is to identify what he calls strategic inflection points, or SIPs. A SIP arises when there's an order-of-magnitude change in a company's environment. These are times when management must act. These are opportunities to go way up--or way down--in the world. How do you spot a SIP?Grove offers a "six forces" framework for identifying SIPs. He starts with Michael E. Porter's five-forces model: customers, suppliers, competitors, potential competitors, and providers of substitutes. He then incorporates some of our own work, which adds complementarity to the strategy map. After all, what is Microsoft to Intel? It isn't a customer, a supplier, or a competitor, and yet there's clearly a critical interdependence between the two companies. Intel and Microsoft are what could be termed complementors. Microsoft's Windows 95 operating-system software complements Intel's Pentium chips, and vice versa--that is, each product makes the other more valuable. Complementors, then, are Grove's sixth force. To identify a SIP, Grove suggests scanning the environment to look for order-of-magnitude, or "10X," changes in any of these six forces that affect a business's fortunes.Peter Boni invokes the shipwreck metaphor when discussing lessons to be learned from Captain Josiah Nickerson Knowles in the first chapter. "Running aground is dangerous for commercial ships, sailboats, and organizations alike. A team, department, company, or organization that's stranded on the rocks [or imminent danger of it] stands to lose its precious cargo: its investors, supporters, customers, partners, money and talent. Raiders will take advantage for their own gain. Survival skills will be tested. When the grounding is serious, an organizational shipwreck is imminent -- unless leaders can engage those on board or find help to kedge off [i.e. extricate] and right the ship. By using the right tools and training, that's where you [the reader] come in." Boni wrote this book to help as many leaders as possible to create the right dynamics for a high-performance team, lead through adversity, and know how to kedge off.For most senior-level executives, Peter Boni offers all the information, insights, and counsel they need ti achieve these and other organizational objectives. While in process of doing so, they can also achieve their own career objectives. Hence this book's potential to have at at least a 10X potential impact on those who absorb, digest, and then apply its material with rigor and persistance.

Socrates as demonstrated by Boni By Rick Bennett For those of you who want the "Cliff Notes Version" of ALL HANDS ON DECK, just read the Viet Nam combat account, pages 94-99. Then extrapolate to your own professional lives. I'd like to have seen more of his analogies drawn from this bona fide war hero's combat experiences, but understand that such stories are definitely not politically correct these days. Besides, Pete is still smarting (p. 97) over being attacked by anti-war protesters in a restaurant on his first day back from the war. You want a hiring mantra? Pete writes (p. 99), "So many sectors of the worldwide economy are missing an enormous opportunity if they don't seek out those who have recent combat experience in the Middle East." I would only qualify that by suggesting you look for "U.S. soldiers with special operations combat" experience, as opposed to the people they were fighting. Hires from the latter group might badly startle your company's board of directors by taking civilian hostages on a slow news day.

A must read for all leaders, consultants, and anyone who wants the inside view of positive leadership in turbulant waters By Lew Peter Boni is an instinctual leader with enormous insight into what it takes to work in the constantly changing and challenging work environment. He has put together a simple and complex model of leadership in turbulent times that draws on great and various experience and what other experts in many fields have discovered and studied over the decades. The very real cases he has brought together in this book, described by the CEO's of the organizations, make Peter's model and the realities and best practices of leadership come to life. He is one of those leaders and his story is enlightening. Each of the leaders share their personal and professional stories that brought them to where they were when they took over an organization in crisis and brought it to a better place with very real and positive results. I applaud Peter for the book, his contributions, his willingness to share his expertise, and the gift he has given us all through this book. I recommend it to all leaders and people who help leaders as well as anyone who wants insight into what it takes to be at the helm of a ship that has gone aground or is about to.
