From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—Ben thinks that Buster is "the best dog in the whole world," but illustrations tell another story. When his parents decide to go on a vacation and leave Buster with Grandpa, Ben writes and draws many notes to let Grandpa know about Buster's needs and preferences, such as "Belly tickles, dog biscuits with peanut butter [and] sleeping on Dad's pillow." While on vacation Ben sends postcards for further information. Fluent readers will enjoy reading the notes, looking at the postcards, and deciphering some notes, which are partially concealed. The engaging images are bold and energetic with lots of detail. While Ben is away, Grandpa begins to train Buster and readers will enjoy seeing the results. VERDICT A wonderful follow-up to Charise Mericle Harper's Henry's Heart (Holt, 2011) and a great companion to Mark Teague's Dear Mrs. LaRue: Letters from Obedience School (Scholastic, 2002)—and a welcome addition to most picture book collections.—Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI

Review "Kid-friendly and full of action and gentle suspense, this selection will be a favorite of dog lovers and reluctant readers alike" ----Kirkus Reviews"...a funny take on loving an 'exhausting' dog, and the way that training can help make big strides with its behavior. Most of the time." ----Publishers Weekly

By Grateful Grandma Stay! is a wonderful book with great illustrations and a lesson for children who want or have a dog. This is the story of Ben's dog, Buster. You don't really need to own a dog to understand this, but if you do have one, then this is even better. Buster has not been trained and the family is tired of the stunts he pulls so, when they do on vacation, they leave him home with grandpa. Ben is worried that grandpa will not know how to take care of Buster and he talks to his dad. Dad tells him to write notes to grandpa. This is where the cute begins. The notes Ben writes and later the postcards are a list of all his faults and misadventures. When grandpa and Buster have a misadventure, he decided it is time to train Buster. When Ben comes home, grandpa shows him what to do to make Buster listen and of course, the next vacation the family takes, Buster gets to go.This is a good story for showing that dogs need to be trained, just like people need to learn manners and skills. No dog is bad, just poorly trained. This could be a good story for showing children how much responsibility is involved in owning a dog, and how important that training is, as well as keeping up with that training. The art work is wonderful filled with detail and expression as well as vibrant colours. I loved how Alex Latimer was able to show the anxiety Ben felt when leaving his best friend with grandpa. A delightful story that I highly recommend.I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

When it's time to go on vacation, though, Ben's parents decide that Buster won't be coming along. He gets to stay with Grampa for the week. Ben is quite concerned about Buster's care, and leaves lots of notes for Grampa, as well as sending postcards from vacation with tips and reminders. The one thing Ben forgot: Don't take Buster to the post office! After their visit to the post office, Grampa decides that Buster could use some training. By the time Ben gets back from vacation, Buster has learned a few lessons from Grampa. Ben's parents even let him go on the next vacation.Latimer's illustrations are colorful and fun. Several of the pages feature Ben's artwork and notes to Grampa, adding variety and interest. I think just about any dog owner can relate to Ben. Dogs are fun, but can be a pain when the tear things up. Even when they tear things up, we can't help but love them! Stay! is "A Top Dog Story." Maybe we'll hear more from this "top dog" in future stories! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

When Ben's parents decide to go on vacation, they remember their last trip with Buster. This time, Buster has to stay with Grampa. Ben makes sure to leave Grampa plenty of notes about Buster, and he sends postcards from the trip to tell him more. In the end, Grampa found a way to help Buster become a great dog... most of the time.I have said it before, but I love this author/illustrator. The stories are cute but still teach a lesson. The illustrations are clean (even when the story is messy!) In this tale, you knew something was going to happen. Ben kept trying to remember the big thing he was forgetting. In the end, there is a great lesson on dog care. This one has too much going on with the letters to share in story time, but it is still an awesome book. Kids will like all the antics Buster gets into, and parents will love the story about the importance of training your dog. It's definitely a win!Free ARC provided through NetGalley for an honest review.
