With contributions from professors, scholars, bloggers, playwrights, and novelists from Australia, the Netherlands, Canada, and Great Britain, as well as the US, this collection explores recent additions to the multifaceted Whedonverse. But it doesn't stop there. Above all comes the question "What's Next?" How will Whedon adapt other Shakespeares like Hamlet and Twelfth Night, seeing that he hates to make the same project twice? Will he offer a female Horatio, a stronger Ophelia, a play set on a spaceship or S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters? Who will star? Other creators have signed on for the Wonder Woman film, but can they surpass his unpublished script? What will come after Avengers: Age of Ultron – Star Wars? In today's world of Netflix shows, comic continuations, and web releases, Whedon has far more options than he did in the '90s Meanwhile, fans across the world are devouring his Buffy motion comics even as American creators pay homage to his works in their own shows, from Husbands and The Guild to How I Met Your Mother. All of this combines to build a glittering future for Whedon's fans and for the creator himself as the Whedonverse swells larger with each passing year.

A New Spin on Whedon Essay Collections By Donna Kanter An astounding collection for those who thought the essayists had covered everything by our beloved Joss! Most of the essays focus on only the recent works: Cabin in the Woods, Much Ado About Nothing, and Avengers -- perfect for those looking to expand the Whedonverse horizons. The book has the usual analysis of Buffy and education, but also an interview with Professor Rhonda V. Wilcox, queen of Buffy studies. Theses essays are clever, focusing on the pop culture, gender roles, and themes. In particular, “That Man’s Playing Galaga” /Dis/ownership, Democratization and Demographics by Dr. Shathley Q looks at clever juxtapositions in Avengers while Watching the Whore: The Treatment of Jules in Cabin in the Woods by Carrie Sessarego emphasizes the shaming culture in which we participate. There's more on Agents of SHIELD, a show not yet explored heavily in scholarship.Valerie Estelle Frankel, the editor, takes on the lesser-known Whedon independent film In Your Eyes as well as Avengers 2, revealing the Whedon tropes in both and connecting all of Whedon's works together clearly. Of course, several essays look at how much these projects are REALLY Whedon's in a world of shared authorship, especially Of Whedonverse Canon and “Someone Else’s Sandbox:” Marvel, Much Ado, and the Great Auteur Debate by Mary Ellen IatropoulosThere's a big section on the recent comics: Seasons eight and nine of Buffy, and Angel & Faith, Spike: A Dark Place, and Willow: Wonderland. One essay covers the shifting mediums, and another, the lesser-known Motion Comics and their Japanese fandom. Two examine Faith and her quandaries in the new comics, while The Browncoats Return! The New Rebellion in Leaves on the Wind by Eugena McCrann looks at the comics that finally continue the adventure from the beloved Serenity film. The really neat sections that follow offer essays on SPECULATIVE Whedon projects -- one's he's been heard to say he'd like to do. As the book explains, "This led to much speculation about the next Shakespeare and how it might look – could it be a gothic Midsummer Night’s Dream with vampires living deep in the forest? A futuristic Hamlet set on a ramshackle starship or on a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier? Twelfth Night with split filming from two different worlds like In Your Eyes? A cut-and-pasted Shakespeare in the tradition of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead? Who, from Tom Hiddleston to Sarah Michelle Gellar, might star?" scholars Carl Wilson, Stephanie Garrison, and Joel Hawkes cast Hamlet and tackle Macbeth, Twelfth Night & A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well for endless casting and adapting possibilities. How would these look with a Whedon twist? The last three authors tackle the future: Sebastiaan Gorissen sees Whedon is primed for Netflix with its far different storytelling and distribution. Valerie Estelle Frankel (again) considers the Wonder Woman cartoon movie already made and compares it to Whedon's much-clamored-for Wonder Woman script and compares them to the heroine's journey. Finally, Dominic Nardi, Jr.describes a Joss Whedon Star Wars, the might incorporate his soul concept from Dollhouse. These last essays make this an intriguing collection as we wait breathlessly for Whedon's next project.

It spans all his work to date in all the media plus conjectures about future projects. Do you still love Buffy, the TV series, and just that? No problem. They've got you covered. Are you a fan of the Buffy comics? These are explored in depth. Maybe you don't care for vampires and are only interested in Firefly and Serenity. This is your book. Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog? Yup. Cabin in the Woods? Yup. Plus another movie I hadn't heard of, "In Your Eyes." Joss's Much Ado About Nothing is analyzed with plenty of discussion about which other Shakespeare plays he should or might want to adapt for film. And, of course, his work for Marvel, including the Avengers movies, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and his run on Astonishing X-Men and other comics. Don't miss this book!

Excellent collection on recent Joss Whedon work By Don Macnaughtan This is a clear and entertaining review of Joss Whedon's current/next moves as a creative force. Instead of focusing on his established body of work, the collection ventures off into the head-spinning horizons of Whedon's present and future. Not much has been devoted to his recent work, but this collection ably handles Cabin in the Woods, Much Ado about Nothing, even In Your Eyes, an uncharacteristically ignored Whedon movie. Agents of Shield also gets some much-deserved attention. For Joss Whedon completists as well as those interested in his prodigious output, this essay collection is essential.
