Literary Nonfiction. In 2013, Daniel Nester's estranged father died penniless and alone in a small apartment in Tucson. The news brings back a flood of memories about Mike Nester, an enigmatic truck driver with a genius IQ, who influences Daniel's worldview with conspiracy theories, philosophy books, and something called "The Nester Curse." Told in short chapters, SHADER: 99 NOTES ON CAR WASHES, MAKING OUT IN CHURCH, GRIEF, AND OTHER UNLEARNABLE SUBJECTS is a semi-comic coming-of-age story of a music- obsessed Catholic boy who searches for a new identity outside of Maple Shade, N.J., a blue-collar town straight out of a Bruce Springsteen song and where Martin Luther King, Jr. was once thrown out of a bar at gunpoint. The town's rough-and- tumble inhabitants, called Shaders, don't suffer record nerds like Daniel gladly, and eventually punk rock and poetry saves his life. A story of redemption and working through grief, SHADER tells the story of what it means to leave a place that never leaves you.

Review A Flavorwire staff pick! A 2016 Firecracker Award Nominee!A Small Press Distribution best-seller!Daniel Nester's prose zings back and forth between the heart and the funny bone.--Matthew Thorburn, Ploughshares blog Not since Bruce Springsteen has a man so eloquently immortalized and rendered fascinating a subsection of New Jersey while also excavating his own soul. Extravagant love and devastating abandonment haunt Nester to this day, yet Shader offers hope and no small dose of hilarity.--ChronogramShader's biggest impact upon us is how utterly relatable it is. The experiences with finding oneself amidst an environment that seems stifling and rich with characters all at once is well-worn literary territory that Nester manages to make seem completely new.--PhilebrityShader affectingly explores youthful pain without retroactive adult resentments of the sort that can curdle into self-pity. Wit is the author's default instead.--Philadelphia Inquirer

From the Inside Flap In 2013, Daniel Nester's estranged father died penniless and alone in a small apartment in Tucson.

From the Back Cover Nester takes us on the ride of his life, and we uncover pieces of ourselves along the way...an engaging read.--Billy Squier, singer/songwriter My God! What would we do without Daniel Nester's irreverence, obsessions and bizarre and wonderful charm. The book you hold in your hands is fantastic.--Darcey Steinke, author of Sister Golden Hair and Easter Everywhere Shader is that rare book that manages to be hilarious, poetic, insightful, and compulsively readable all at the same time. Daniel Nester has the gifts to turn a time, a town, into both a dream and a place that feels like home, with some of the most potent characters I can think of in recent literature. I couldn't put it down.--Paul Lisicky, author of The Narrow Door and Famous Builder

Furuness I've always loved Nester's sensibility—wry, curious, unflinching—and this book doesn't disappoint. It'll keep you up late, gobbling up just one more chapter, and then just one more. What a pleasure to spend a few days in the Shade in the company of the author. I miss it already.

Hayden Nester, a Jersey altar boy who finds his secular self in 80s alternative music, loses his faith & way after his father takes off for Arizona. With the exception of the 22-caliber semi-automatic pistol his dad mails him for his 21st birthday, communication between father and son is scant. When Daniel receives a phone call in 2013 that his father has died, he works through his numbness by writing these 99 "notes" that unravel growing up with Dad in blue-collar Maple Shade, then life without Dad through undergrad days at a local branch of Rutgers U, followed by Nester becoming a respected NY poet (the last item credited to a bloody encounter with a self-propelled lawn mower). The idiosyncrasy of each jotting sucks the reader smack into Nester's often funny yet tormented, sometimes scholarly yet drug-influenced head, more powerfully than traditional memoir writing. Taken as a whole the notes become a jot-to-jot puzzle of Nester's journey towards clarity, some of which he connects for us, some of which are left for readers to connect themselves.

In short, I loved it By Donald Biordi At first glance, the book could be described as a kid growing up in the Northeast in a lower-to-middle class family. More accurately, though, it is a book about a kid trying to find his way despite circumstances seemingly always working against him. The author looks at himself, his parents, and his upbringing with equal parts comedy (the author does not spare himself) and brutal, hard honesty. That combination makes the book real to me.The author chose a “note” form to write each chapter that I was dubious about at first, but in reality, it made the book easily accessible. I thought the format would seem like a gimmick, but it made me not want to put the book down. The author is from a blue collar town where being good at school wasn’t terribly popular. If you grew up in a place where, maybe, you didn’t feel like you always fit, you’ll be invested in the author’s story pretty quickly and the writing style will make the pace of the read really easy.Music, and love of music, plays a part in the story and if you were ever that guy or girl that rifled through record store inventory in a mall or an independent record store (remember those?), you’ll relate to the author very quickly. Despite the differences in musical taste I had with the author at the point of the ‘80’s (and early ‘90’s) he describes, it was still really easy to relate to the author and his experiences.A more personal aspect of the book I also enjoyed was how the author recounted what it was like living and growing up in the Delaware Valley (i.e.-- Philly, the Philly suburbs, South Jersey, Northern Delaware) during the ‘80’s. Frankly, it felt very true to my experience living in the so called “Rust Belt”.Ultimately, though, you didn’t have to grow up during the ‘80’s or in the Northeast to enjoy this book. Some of the themes of relationships with siblings and parents are actually timeless and the author is skilled at telling larger, meaningful stories in a small, impactful way.
