6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Waste of Money and Time By Joela Paik Don't waste your travel money on this book! Are you looking for advice on which tickets to buy for rail travel in Europe? Then this book is not for you. Are you trying to make sense of the dizzying number of ticket options for train travel in any of the European Union? Then look somewhere else. This book will tell you how to pack and what is good to see in most major cities in Europe. It will not give you the detailed information you need to choose among rail passes. It won't give you detailed maps of train travel. It doesn't demystify any of the confusion about the different types of trains on the same tracks. It won't explain to you how your train might separate and go in different directions. It won't explain those confusing signs you will find in train stations that direct you to the wrong train. For that you would want to go somewhere else.

Sixteen years old and newly knighted, Darian is now being sent on The Journey, his first step into manhood. Meanwhile Gwendolyn, a seemingly ordinary young girl, finds herself abducted by the servants of the powerful mercenary, Lord Valrak. When our young hero stumbles upon the trail of the maiden and her captors, he gallantly accepts the quest to rescue her. Along the way, he meets a number of companions who join him for honor, for friendship, and for gold. During their travels, they discover the secret that fuels Lord Valrak's pursuit. Overcome at last and vastly outnumbered, our heroes are forced to take their final stand against the forces of evil. The Stars of Areon is the first in a series of seven books. It's a tale of fantasy and adventure, filled with magic, monsters, powerful villains, and valiant heroes. Although each book in the series focuses on a single series of events, there is also an overarching storyline that connects the individual threads. Character interaction and growth is a very central part of the theme and as you read you will come to know (and I hope, love) the characters contained within these pages. In some ways this first volume is the very classic story of the damsel in distress. However, the unique and compelling characters set it very much apart. It's not just a story, it's their story and, as the reader, you'll be part of that story with them. It's my sincere hope that you'll take a few minutes to explore the world of Areon. You'll be glad you did.

Miami and the Keys are the cultural and geographical gateways to the United States; where Latin America gracefully blends into North America, and land embraces the sea.

This unusual guide leads you along the fulcrum that is Miami and the Keys, laden with world-class architecture, sandy beaches, pristine waters, nightclubs, and trendy hotels. Beneath the well-polished surface lies a history and culture that strays far from the conventional, bubbling up through unexpected places, like a coral fortress built for a spurned lover, a divey laundromat that serves the sweetest café con leche you've ever had, or an enclave of houses built on stilts in the midst of the ocean. Lose yourself in a glass rainforest. Glide over the mysterious waters of the Everglades. Visit your own desert island. Drink the sweet nectar of the Cuban coffee gods. Venture into the "other" Miami, beyond the glitz and glamor, steeped in natural beauty and deep-seeded tradition. See why Ernest Hemingway called the Keys his home.

Though teeming with tourists, there are still plenty of hidden gems to be unearthed, you just have to know where to look...

Miami — See It Like a Native By Jonathan Leblang If you grew up in Miami, love books by Carl Hiaasen, or ever "saw it like a native"—this is the book for you. If you visit Miami, this is the guidebook for you. If you can't visit, this book is the next best thing to being there.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A must have guide for Miami travel By Ross Simon I've been an Amazon shopper for nearly a decade and I have never before written a review. This book has compelled me to on a fundamental level.Let's start with the photographs. The tasteful exuberance of his images portray Miami in a light that perfectly captures her essence. The photos alone are worthy of a 5 star review. The written word is what puts this book into the stratosphere and immediately bring to mind the phrase "must have". Streisand's words not only convey exactly what you would imagine the hidden jewel's of the south to be, but also he has you laughing along the journey too with helpful anecdotes of his own experience.I could not recommend this book more. A stocking stuffer? Perhaps. An absolute necessity for any smart traveler? Without a doubt.

By Brittany Benoit As a South Floridian and a frequent Miami-Dade County day-tripper I can't begin to describe how invaluable this guide has been. Not only does the narrative flow with humor and insight but the accompanied photography shows why they call Miami the "Magic City."

Renowned scientist John Sinclair and his old school friend Richard, a celebrated composer, are enjoying a climbing expedition in the Scottish Highlands when Sinclair disappears without a trace for thirteen hours. When he resurfaces with no explanation for his disappearance, he has undergone an uncanny alteration: a birthmark on his back has vanished. But stranger events are yet to come: things are normal enough in Britain, but in France it's 1917 and World War I is raging, Greece is in the Golden Age of Pericles, America seems to have reverted to the 18th century, and Russia and China are thousands of years in the future. Against this macabre backdrop of coexisting time spheres, the two young men risk their lives to unravel the truth. But truth is in the mind of the beholder, and who is to say which of these timelines is the 'real' one? In October the First Is Too Late (1966), world-famous astrophysicist Sir Fred Hoyle (1915-2001) explores fascinating concepts of time and consciousness in the form of a thrilling science fiction adventure that ranks among his very best. 'Fred Hoyle is the John Buchan of science fiction. His fantasies are not only rooted in scientific possibility but are told at a galloping pace.' - Julian Jebb, Sunday Times 'Fine storytelling.' - Kirkus Reviews

October the First Is Too Late (Valancourt 20th Century Classics), by Fred Hoyle

About the Author CosmologistJohn Howard was the 25th Prime Minister of Australia, serving from March 1996 to December 2007. Despite an early meteoric rise to become Australia's Treasurer at 38, the self-described economic radical and social conservative found himself sidelined by his own party. After many years in the political wilderness, Howard bounced back, led the Coalition to a resounding victory, then got to work on his reform agenda. The Howard Government privatized the previously government-owned telecommunications carrier Telstra, dismantled excessive union power and compulsory trade union membership, instituted the unpopular Goods and Services Tax, trimmed the Public Service and reduced government expenditure, and established the 'work for the dole' scheme.

Another Sci-Fi Gem from Sir Fred Hoyle By BlueJay54 I've said it before and I'll say it again: It is a great pity that Sir Fred Hoyle, scientist, mathematician and polymath extraordinaire, has yet to be recognized as one of our greatest Sci-Fi writers, comparable in importance to HG Wells, AC Clarke, PK Dick and Wm Gibson. Wit and intelligence shine through this brillant story about time out of joint and parallel universes, with the 2 main characters providing an interesting contrast between Apollonian (the scientist) and Dionysian (the musician) approaches to life. (For a professional astronomer, Hoyle has a brilliant feel for music, but I hear he was also an accomplished drummer!) The story jumps times and places, from Periclean Greece to the distant, pessimistic future, with another poignant ending. Should be required reading for true Sci-Fi fans.

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Hurry up, the gap is closing! By Primoz Peterlin That's right: the very same British astronomer - a retired Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge University, the founder of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge and currently a Honorary Fellow of both Emmanuel College and St. John's College in Cambridge and an Honorary Professor at Cardiff University of Wales - who occasionally challenges the audience of astronomers with daring theories, also writes fiction. The novel, written in 1966, was set into present time, i.e. 1966. Two colleagues from their common Cambridge times, a composer and a acclaimed particle physicist, meet at Heathrow airport. In a cheerful reunion mood they decide to make one of their student plans come true, and head for a hike in the Scottish Highlands. A pleasant hiking holiday is abruptly interrupted when the physicist learns he has to make an urgent trip to California, since the experiments show an unexpected modulation in the Sun radiation. The composer is invited along, and from there the two characters start an unusual and fantastic journey across the world and - simultaneously - through the time, as the parallel universes suddenly seem to be coexisting side by side, with Britain being in 1966, Western Europe in 1917, North America in mid-eighteenth century, and Greece in the fifth century B.C. But the gap in the time-space is closing... you guessed when.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. queerly fascinating By Nicholas Cunningham Based on this utterly scientific study of two reviews, do not give this book to your twelve or thirteen year old unless you are comfortable with him or her becoming a professional musician or physicist. I don't know how much "October the First is Too Late" influenced my choice to study physics, but it is compelling in a way too few of the books I read in middle school are. After more than a decade, I still remember and enjoy Hoyle's description of reality as a series of pigeon holes filled with stories.

Book Two: Raymer, a member of the Raging Mountain family, has been locked in King Ember's Summer Palace dungeon for a year. His only crime is being born of the Dragon Clan. The cell next to him holds an emissary of a rival kingdom, an irreverent giant of a man named Quint. Together they plan a daring escape, but once free they find that only the two of them can prevent a war and save innocent lives. Raymer learns of some of the special abilities he has with dragons and must use those abilities to control a dragon and prevent a war while also protecting the secrets of the Dragon Clan. Author’s note--Book two of the Dragon Clan series. While these books are intended to be read in sequence, I have done my best to also make each of them stand alone as much as possible.

Children are exposed to much much more on TV. This book has adventure, suspenceful situations, and characters that you will love. I finished this one yesterday evening and have already started on the third book Dragon Clan #3 Fleet's story. We met Fleet briefly in this book and it set the stage for his own story. The Dragon Clan are such interesting people. I would really like to know how they came into being. What is it that causes these people to be born with images of Dragons on their backs? This is such a different approach to Dragons that I find it captures you from the very first book.

My biggest problem with the dragon Clan 2 is that the King has left a dragon Clan member alive in his dungeon. Even though it's widely known that you don't let any dragon Clan live due to his grandfather, the king that was picked up and dropped from a great height. Also what happened to Edward from the first book, the new Earl of Witten, that was going to help the new King see past that?

The story of the dragon clan continues with new characters mingled with old. Will the "normals" ever except the members of the dragon clan, or will fear mean the extinction of the clan forever. Mom suggests they go to the park so with picnic in hand they all walk to the park. When called for lunch, the boys each grab one of their sister's hands and walk with her to the picnic. Chelsea takes a nap after lunch on Mom's lap whilst Dad plays Frisbee with the boys. Once awake, Chelsea and her mom also join in. Who or what interrupts their game? The family values promoted in this story is TREMENDOUS teaching young children how to treat each other. The illustrations are mostly good and definitely colorful but not as high quality as some books. Whilst readable on my Kindle Paperwhite the font is a little on the small side and is in fixed format so cannot be enlarged. A larger device or Cloud makes for a much better read. Book provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz

Ray In the charming little Kids Book: Let’s Go to the Park, written by Mae Segeti and Nic Monty, three children go to the park with their parents. This is part of the Family Fun bedtime stories for kids series, a series of family stories for children age 2 – 8. While some of the words are probably a bit advanced for younger children, my own experience with my grandchildren, ages 2 and 4, have shown me that they quickly get it, often with just a bit of explanation. The illustrations are quite cute, and the adventures, especially the part where a dog grabs the Frisbee they’re playing with and runs away with it, will entertain youngsters.

Delightful and Colourful By Deborah Let's Go to the Park by Mae Segeti is a delightful and colourful. What stands out is the simplistic outing the family had which wasn’t reliant upon spending money or being caught up inside on technology. It takes the reader into the park outing where the family spends time together, sharing play-time, caring for each other and touches on family pet’s and the responsibility associated with having one.I enjoyed the illustrations, which are colourful and certainly capture the essence of the story and would appeal to a young person’s imagination.I would suggest it is perfect for children 2 – 6 years

Since the publication of its Shingo Prize-winning predecessor, TWI programs have seen steady growth in usage. As a true understanding of Standard Work has developed, the need for the TWI skills as fundamental tools to achieve Lean objectives has been solidified. The TWI Workbook: Essential Skills for Supervisors, Second Edition has been completely updated to the latest terminology and practice. This edition includes revised forms and tools, as well as new examples that illustrate current day TWI practice. Emphasizing the importance of accident and injury prevention, this edition includes an entirely new section on Job Safety, a fourth TWI module that was developed in Japan using the identical TWI methodology of the original three programs introduced in the original work. This updated edition includes new chapters on:

  • Two Key Aspects to Safety: Things and People
  • Practicing the JS Method
  • TWI’s Problem Solving Training

In addition to a new chapter on the TWI problem-solving methodology, this edition contains a new introduction with a more complete description of how TWI was reintroduced into American industry, including detailed information on the contribution TWI made at Toyota that was not available when the original book was published.Focusing on how the TWI skills create and support standardized work as the foundation for Lean and continuous improvement, the book includes detailed explanations on how to determine important steps and find key points that lead the way to standardized work. A new section on making a balanced breakdown has also been added, with new examples of Job Instruction breakdowns. The TWI Workbook: Essential Skills for Supervisors, Second Edition, by Patrick Graupp, Robert J. Wrona

Review

"As you probably know, Robert Wrona has been the primary driving force behind spreading the Training Within Industry (TWI) concepts in North America and around the globe for the past couple of decades, in conjunction with the TWI Institute. In Patrick Graupp you have, without a doubt, the finest TWI master instructor in the English language around the world. The first edition of their workbook was of tremendous value, and the latest version is even better. ... Spend time carefully thinking about the first principles and fundamental elements in this material, like Taiichi Ohno and others inside of Toyota did more than 60 years ago. The fundamentals have provided value to American companies before and after World War II. The concepts have provided decades of value to Toyota and other companies around the world as well. I am certain if you study the content and apply it diligently and patiently, you will find success as well."―From the Foreword by Art Smalley, President, Art of Lean, Inc.

About the Author

Patrick Graupp began his training career at the Sanyo Electric Corporate Training Center in Japan after graduating with highest honors from Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1980. There he learned to deliver Training Within Industry (TWI) from his mentor Kazuhiko Shibuya. Mr. Shibuya was trained by Kenji Ogawa, who was trained by the four TWI, Inc. trainers sent from the United States to help Japan rebuild industry in 1951. Patrick earned an MBA from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, while leading Sanyo’s global training effort. He was later promoted to the head of human resources for Sanyo North America Corp. in San Diego, California, where he settled.Patrick partnered with Bob Wrona in 2001 to conduct TWI pilot projects in Syracuse, New York, that became the foundation for the TWI Institute, which has since trained a rapidly expanding global network of more than 1000 certified trainers who are now delivering TWI training in the manufacturing, health care, construction, energy, and service industries in the United States and around the globe. The first edition of their book The TWI Workbook: Essential Skills for Supervisors was a Shingo Research and Professional Publication Prize Recipient for 2007.

Robert J. Wrona began his manufacturing career at Chevrolet in Buffalo, New York, where he was promoted to shop floor supervisor after earning a BS from Canisius College, Buffalo, New York. He moved on to Kodak in Rochester, New York, where he became interested in organizational development while earning his MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. Bob joined a high-volume retail drugstore chain in Syracuse, New York, when it was a 12-store operation. He standardized store operating procedures, developed internal training, and reorganized central distribution as the company profitably grew into a regional chain of 140 in 11 years.

By Juliana Almeida Carvalho de Souza I've been struggling how to review this book without giving away any spoilers because I there are a couple of scenes and characters I really want to be hyper about. This is season 3, it's obvious by now I enjoy the series very much, right!? I have mentioned in the reviews of the previous books all different aspects that keep me hooked to the series. Those are still in play, with some added twists! So I'll be brief (since I'm keeping away from spoilers) and say there is one VERY STEAMY scene in this book that I absolutely loved! Much steamier and hotter than the ones in previous books, in my opinion. And I need to say, that even though the main character seemed a little self-destructive in the beginning of the book, I applaud her! Can't say anything more, read and see what I mean! Can't wait for the next one!

In Shunning to Shining, Tim Lapp shares the trials and travails of his Amish grandfather, a larger-than-life man whose early adulthood was defined by alcoholism, poor decisions, and disappointment. His eventual shunning from the Amish community lowered a curtain of shame on his family, threatening to forever taint their identity. But Tim’s father, Manny, refused to let the actions of his own father define him. Ironically, Manny Lapp would go on to become an electrician, start a successful business, and rebuild the family name. Shunning to Shining is more than simply a book about the growth of a business. It’s the story of hardship, perseverance, and redemption.

Take control of your communications - before someone else does.

What if someone told you that your behavior was controlled by a powerful, invisible force? Most of us would be skeptical of such a claim - but it's largely true. Our brains are constantly transmitting and receiving signals of which we are unaware. Studies show that these constant inputs drive the great majority of our decisions about what to do next - and we become conscious of the decisions only after we start acting on them. Many may find that disturbing. But the implications for leadership are profound.

In this provocative yet practical audiobook, renowned speaking coach and communication expert Nick Morgan highlights recent research that shows how humans are programmed to respond to the nonverbal cues of others - subtle gestures, sounds, and signals - that elicit emotion. He then provides a clear, useful framework of seven "power cues" that will be essential for any leader in business, the public sector, or almost any context. You'll learn crucial skills, from measuring nonverbal signs of confidence to the art and practice of gestures and vocal tones to figuring out what your gut is really telling you. This concise and engaging guide will help leaders and aspiring leaders of all stripes to connect powerfully, communicate more effectively, and command influence.

A rigorous and comprehensive exploration of where and what determine the value of interactions, for better or worse By Robert Morris In this exceptionally thoughtful and thought-provoking book, Morgan notes that our conscious minds can handle (i.e. process) about 540 bits of information per second whereas our unconscious mind can handle about eleven million (11,000,000) bits of information per second. Percentages vary from one research study to the next but the results of all of the research studies that I have examined indicate that, on average, less that 20% of one's impact when interacting with another person is determined by what is said; more than 80% of our impact is non-verbal...tone of voice and body language. Time out: Please re-read that last sentence.Morgan explains how, to a significant extent, we can increase our impact others' subconscious minds if we strengthen our interpersonal, non-verbal communications. That, in essence, is "the power that rules human interaction." Here is a covey of seven "power cues, " accompanied by a question. How you answer each question will help to determine the nature and extent of an area in which to improve.1. Self-Awareness: How do you show up when you enter a room?2. Non-Verbal Impact: What emotions do your tone of voice and body language convey?3. Feedback: What unconscious "messages" are you receiving from others?4. Presence: Do you have a leadership voice, one that resonates with authority?5. Clear Signals: What authentic signals do you send out in key situations?6. Unconscious Mind: Is your unconscious mind limiting you or freeing you?7. Storytelling: Are you telling powerful stories?Morgan devotes a separate chapter to each of the seven, explaining with precision as well as eloquence what to do in response to your candid answers as well as HOW to do it effectively. These are among the dozens of business subjects and issues of special interest and value to me, also listed to indicate the scope of Morgan's coverage.o We're Not Aware of Our Most Important Activities (Pages 6-14)o What Humans Really Want (18-21)o Knowing Your Own Power Cues: Let's Rethink Our Communications (23-25)o Why Gesture Matters, and, How Our Minds Really Work: Not So Much (32-33)o Field Notes: The How-You-Show-Up Questionnaire (49-50)o The Difficulty of Paying Attention to Everything (53-55)o Mirror Neurons Make It All Possible (63-64)o Take Charge of Your Emotions and You'll Be Able to Take Charge (65-68)o Play the Top Dog to Be the Top Dog, and, Remember Who's in Charge (72-75)o Use Your Unconscious Expertise the Way It Should Be Used (87-89)o How to Spot the Person in Power (95-98)o Learn [How] to Listen to Your Unconscious Mind (109-110)o The Secret Sounds That Run Your Life (121-124)o Pitching Your Voice to Project Leadership (131-134)o The Leadership Conversation (138-140)o Influence Has Four Sources (152-154)o How to Send Honest Signals Through Cyberspace (161-166)o How to Tell a Great Story (205-221)Obviously, no brief commentary such as mind can possibly do full justice to the abundance of information, insights, and counsel that Nick Morgan provides in this volume but I hope I have at least indicated why I think so highly of it. Here's just about everything anyone needs to know about how and why mastery of non-verbal as well as verbal skills can increase substantially the quality and impact one has in all interpersonal communication.I presume to add one final point. All of these skills have a higher purpose: To ensure that your message and how you communicate it - both consciously and unconsciously -- help you to achieve the given objectives, and meanwhile, to help ensure that you "get" the messages that others are communicating to you, whether they realize it or not.

Malcolm Nick Morgan has written two very good books on presentations and persuasive communications, so I looked forward to reading his new book, Power Cues. For the most part, I was not disappointed. The book contains a lot of solid material which can definitely help anyone who wants to strengthen their skills and boost their personal influence.Everyone can get something different out of this book, depending on their baseline level of knowledge of nonverbal communication. Without false modesty, I can say that I have read dozens of books and hundreds of articles on the topic, including almost all of his principal sources. But I also learned a lot, because Morgan supplements the research by incorporating it into his own system based on his long experience. It’s obvious that he knows what he’s talking about and what he’s doing. The theme of the book is that your unconscious mind is hugely influential in your perceptions and decisions, and you can become a better communicator by gaining control over your own cues and becoming more skilled at reading others. There are seven power cues, each covered in its own chapter. I personally found the first two the most useful: becoming self-aware of how you present yourself to others and then taking charge of your nonverbal communication. One excellent point is that “charisma is focused emotion”, but because it’s almost impossible to focus on your material and your own body language at the same time, you need to put yourself into the right state of mind before that important meeting or big presentation, and the book describes techniques that method actors use before they go on stage. The third chapter concerns reading the signals of others. Morgan pays lip service to Paul Ekman’s work on micro-expressions, but then sensibly tells us that it’s too complicated to use in normal situations. Morgan’s key insight is that we are already experts in reading nonverbal cues, but we don’t always know how to tap into that knowledge. His approach is to teach you how to listen to your unconscious mind by asking yourself four fundamental questions: Is this person: friend or foe? Telling the truth? On my side? Powerful or not? After the first three chapters, the book became less useful to me, but that may just be a personal reaction. Chapter four concerns the proper use of your voice. It’s no great revelation that deeper voices are perceived as more powerful, but there is not too much that you can do about it. You can work on your breathing, or you can use a piano to find your “maximum resonance point” (and I have to admit I got totally lost on that one).Chapter 5 goes deeper into the combination of body language and voice, using the framework from the book, Honest Signals, by Sandy Pentland. I find some of the suggestions a bit gimmicky, especially the idea of trying to manipulate others by mirroring their movements, but there are some good ideas in here.Chapter 6 made me scratch my head a bit, trying to figure out how it fits in with the rest of the book. It’s about using self-affirmation to harness the power of your unconscious mind.Chapter 7 is about using stories to really connect with your audiences. This chapter is very practical, with excellent suggestions on how to structure and tell stories. It’s a nice strong finish to the book. Will this book make you a better communicator? Maybe – it depends on you. I have two caveats. The first is one that Morgan himself issues in the book: these are subtle and difficult skills that require practice to master. You can’t become an instant expert just by reading about a new technique, any more than you can shoot a basketball better because you watched Lebron James on TV last night. Second, you always have to keep in mind that cues don’t trump content in the long run. In fact, if you have strong content backed by solid evidence, you will probably radiate these cues naturally.Despite my reservations, I still give the book five stars because I believe that regardless of where you start from, there are plenty of practical ideas in this book to make you a more persuasive communicator. Read it, choose the ideas that you think will work for you, and then practice, practice, practice!

How to control your body language By John Gibbs Power in human communications and relations is determined largely by the interplay of our unconscious minds, according to Nick Morgan in this book. If you can understand how that unconscious interplay works and exercise some control over it, you may become more effective in the ways you relate to other people. The book goes on to describe seven different “power cues” that will “help you signal that you’re the leader of the tribe gathered around you”. These cover such things as self-awareness, emotions conveyed through body language, deciphering the body language of others, using a commanding voice, and telling powerful stories. Each of these requires plenty of practice and training, but soon you will be able to maximize your personal impact as a leader. This may all sound a bit Machiavellian, but the author explains that it is not about manipulation, but about “alignment” between the group and the leader. In fact, it is about radical authenticity, which requires you to manage your body language so that the non-verbal communication signals sent by your body reinforce the verbal message that you are giving. It takes plenty of preparation and practice to look truly authentic. My skeptical reflex usually kicks in when a business book claims authority from the latest discoveries in “brain science”, and in the case of the present book I remain doubtful about many of the author’s assertions. Nonetheless, it is quite clear that poor body language does detract from the persuasiveness of an argument or presentation, and those seeking to improve their body language may find some helpful content here.

The Case of the Stolen Sixpence: The Mysteries of Maisie Hitchins Book 1, by Holly Webb

From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—Twelve-year-old Maisie Hitchins lives with her grandmother, the owner of a respectable boardinghouse, in London. Maisie spends her days helping with the dusting and sweeping of guest rooms while daydreaming of becoming a great and famous detective. When Maisie finds a wriggling sack by the river with a tiny puppy inside, she decides that her first case will be finding the cruel person who would cast away a defenseless animal—and convincing her no-nonsense grandmother that Eddie the puppy must come to live with them. Eddie becomes Maisie's partner in crime when a second mystery falls into her lap: money has gone missing from the butcher shop, and classmate George is blamed. Narrator Anna Bentinck does a wonderful job giving Maisie spunk and substance, though her voices for male characters are a bit harder to appreciate. The story is very short, yet owing to references to the Victorian era and the use of old-fashioned British English, it may be too complex for many struggling readers. While this offers a quick, enjoyable listen, it would seem that the series hasn't quite identified its audience. VERDICT Recommended with reservations for upper elementary libraries.—Suzanne Dix, The Seven Hills School Library, Cincinnati, OH

From Booklist Twelve-year-old Maisie Hitchins, who helps her grandmother run a Victorian boarding house, idolizes dashing detective Gilbert Carrington and hopes one day to solve cases of her own. When her friend George is accused of stealing money from the butcher shop where he works, Maisie and her faithful canine assistant, Eddie, are on the case, ready to right this terrible wrong. The young sleuth acquires tools (a notebook and a magnifying glass), perfects her disguises (with help from a thespian boarder), and uses her observational powers to sift through the clues and crack the case. Maisie is sure to charm beginning chapter-book readers new to the mystery genre. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her systematic methods concerning the rules of evidence and deduction will enlighten would-be investigators. Lindsay’s black-line drawings add to the appeal and break up the text for younger readers. This makes a perfect choice for graduates of David A. Adler’s Cam Jansen series who are not quite ready for Nancy Springer’s Enola Holmes Mysteries. Grades 3-6. --Kay Weisman

Review "Maisie is sure to charm beginning chapter-book readers new to the mystery genre."—Booklist "Readers will eagerly await this spunky, saucy new amateur detective's next caper."—Kirkus "Emerging chapter book readers who enjoy mystery and historical fiction will find much to like here."—School Library Journal "Lindsay's humorous b&w line drawings are in step with the light atmosphere Webb creates as she lays the groundwork for future cases."—Publishers Weekly "Mystery-loving kids who have moved beyond Cam Jansen and kids who prefer their historical fiction on the light side may find Maisie's escapades to their liking."—Bulletin

By delicateflower152 "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" is the first in a new mystery series targeted at the 9 - 12 year old group. Holly Webb has created a spunky young would-be detective, Maisie Hitchens.Maisie lives in her grandmother's London boarding house. She admires the famous detective Gilbert Carrington and wants nothing more than to become a famous detective herself. Maisie finds a wet sack containing a puppy that she names Eddie and, even though her grandmother does not allow pets in the boarding house, takes him home and hides him in her room. When Eddie steals some sausages from the butcher's delivery boy, Maisie later learns George has been fired for allegedly stealing from his employer. Maisie, who thinks the missing sausages are the reason for George's dismissal, feels responsible. She then learns it is the theft of shillings from the cash box that butcher blames on George; Maisie sets out to discover the truth."The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" is an easy to read book that is very appropriate for younger readers. The vocabulary and sentence structure of "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" are not complex. Many children in the target age group - 9 - 12-years old - may be too sophisticated to enjoy this simple story. However, younger readers in the 6 - 8-year old age range may enjoy the story; it is also quite appropriate for a bedtime read-aloud for preschoolers. The characters in "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" are relatable and there are humorous situations that will satisfy younger children's desire that their books have a fun-factor. Marion Lindsay's simple, cartoon-like illustrations are cute and there were enough of them to fulfill my grandson's demand for books having "pictures".If you are looking for an easy to read, simple mystery for your young reader or to use as a bedtime read aloud, you may want to consider Holly Webb's "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence".

MULLIGAN Set in London, England 12 year old Maisie lives in her Grandmother's boardinghouse and aspires to be a detective like her idol, Gilbert Carrington. In her first success she rescues a puppy someone has tried to drown - right there you are either going to want your tiny tot to be exposed to the cruelties of the world or not. I chose yes and my 9 year old had a lot of questions. Like Maisie, she thought the sociopath should be locked away forever. Her rescue she names Eddie and immediately he is breaking the law by stealing from George who is the butcher's delivery boy. Maisie has a series of adventures with a cast of characters - my 9 year old was thoroughly entertained - however she did need a bit of translating from English to American slang. The illustrations are black-and-white illustrations and the time period probably 100 years ago.Readers will eagerly await this spunky, saucy new amateur detective's next caper

Luck have it, two mysteries end up plopping themselves in her lap. First, she finds a drowning puppy, who soon becomes her best pal. Eddie, the puppy, needs to figure out who tried to drown him. Then, Maisie's friend is fired for stealing. This leads Maisie on her second mystery (the one that covers the whole book). What actually happened to the money and how can she restore her friend's good name?My thoughts:This is a very fun book to read. For children that are moving a little past the Nate the Great series and looking for a beginning chapter book, The Mysteries of Maisie Hitchins is sure to be a new favorite. Maisie is a wonderful character with a big personality. Eddie is adorable and just as much a part of the story. Between the two of them, you get some laughs, but also a true mystery solving duo. Maisie is very specific with evidence and how to handle herself. With her trusty notebook, she jots down notes and keeps her thoughts going towards what may have happened. Beginning readers will easily follow along without losing track of clues that have already been found. I read this with my oldest, who is not quite at chapter book reading yet, and she adored it. I'd say that it will hit the 2nd-3rd grade readers best.

Sensational photos in color and B&W from parts far and wide. Short captions appear only on pages following each picture, allowing you to experience each image with your own imagination. For myself, I can get lost in each of these pictures. It's almost like being there. And there are eight more books in the series. So cool. Highly recommended.

It took me on a trip around the world to many places I have never been and to some I have. I especially like the photos of old store and cafe facades and also the ones of people that give us a glimpse into their culture and world.
