From School Library Journal Gr 5–7—Twelve-year-old Maisie Hitchins lives with her grandmother, the owner of a respectable boardinghouse, in London. Maisie spends her days helping with the dusting and sweeping of guest rooms while daydreaming of becoming a great and famous detective. When Maisie finds a wriggling sack by the river with a tiny puppy inside, she decides that her first case will be finding the cruel person who would cast away a defenseless animal—and convincing her no-nonsense grandmother that Eddie the puppy must come to live with them. Eddie becomes Maisie's partner in crime when a second mystery falls into her lap: money has gone missing from the butcher shop, and classmate George is blamed. Narrator Anna Bentinck does a wonderful job giving Maisie spunk and substance, though her voices for male characters are a bit harder to appreciate. The story is very short, yet owing to references to the Victorian era and the use of old-fashioned British English, it may be too complex for many struggling readers. While this offers a quick, enjoyable listen, it would seem that the series hasn't quite identified its audience. VERDICT Recommended with reservations for upper elementary libraries.—Suzanne Dix, The Seven Hills School Library, Cincinnati, OH
From Booklist Twelve-year-old Maisie Hitchins, who helps her grandmother run a Victorian boarding house, idolizes dashing detective Gilbert Carrington and hopes one day to solve cases of her own. When her friend George is accused of stealing money from the butcher shop where he works, Maisie and her faithful canine assistant, Eddie, are on the case, ready to right this terrible wrong. The young sleuth acquires tools (a notebook and a magnifying glass), perfects her disguises (with help from a thespian boarder), and uses her observational powers to sift through the clues and crack the case. Maisie is sure to charm beginning chapter-book readers new to the mystery genre. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her systematic methods concerning the rules of evidence and deduction will enlighten would-be investigators. Lindsay’s black-line drawings add to the appeal and break up the text for younger readers. This makes a perfect choice for graduates of David A. Adler’s Cam Jansen series who are not quite ready for Nancy Springer’s Enola Holmes Mysteries. Grades 3-6. --Kay Weisman

By delicateflower152 "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" is the first in a new mystery series targeted at the 9 - 12 year old group. Holly Webb has created a spunky young would-be detective, Maisie Hitchens.Maisie lives in her grandmother's London boarding house. She admires the famous detective Gilbert Carrington and wants nothing more than to become a famous detective herself. Maisie finds a wet sack containing a puppy that she names Eddie and, even though her grandmother does not allow pets in the boarding house, takes him home and hides him in her room. When Eddie steals some sausages from the butcher's delivery boy, Maisie later learns George has been fired for allegedly stealing from his employer. Maisie, who thinks the missing sausages are the reason for George's dismissal, feels responsible. She then learns it is the theft of shillings from the cash box that butcher blames on George; Maisie sets out to discover the truth."The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" is an easy to read book that is very appropriate for younger readers. The vocabulary and sentence structure of "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" are not complex. Many children in the target age group - 9 - 12-years old - may be too sophisticated to enjoy this simple story. However, younger readers in the 6 - 8-year old age range may enjoy the story; it is also quite appropriate for a bedtime read-aloud for preschoolers. The characters in "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence" are relatable and there are humorous situations that will satisfy younger children's desire that their books have a fun-factor. Marion Lindsay's simple, cartoon-like illustrations are cute and there were enough of them to fulfill my grandson's demand for books having "pictures".If you are looking for an easy to read, simple mystery for your young reader or to use as a bedtime read aloud, you may want to consider Holly Webb's "The Case of the Stolen Sixpence".

MULLIGAN Set in London, England 12 year old Maisie lives in her Grandmother's boardinghouse and aspires to be a detective like her idol, Gilbert Carrington. In her first success she rescues a puppy someone has tried to drown - right there you are either going to want your tiny tot to be exposed to the cruelties of the world or not. I chose yes and my 9 year old had a lot of questions. Like Maisie, she thought the sociopath should be locked away forever. Her rescue she names Eddie and immediately he is breaking the law by stealing from George who is the butcher's delivery boy. Maisie has a series of adventures with a cast of characters - my 9 year old was thoroughly entertained - however she did need a bit of translating from English to American slang. The illustrations are black-and-white illustrations and the time period probably 100 years ago.Readers will eagerly await this spunky, saucy new amateur detective's next caper

Luck have it, two mysteries end up plopping themselves in her lap. First, she finds a drowning puppy, who soon becomes her best pal. Eddie, the puppy, needs to figure out who tried to drown him. Then, Maisie's friend is fired for stealing. This leads Maisie on her second mystery (the one that covers the whole book). What actually happened to the money and how can she restore her friend's good name?My thoughts:This is a very fun book to read. For children that are moving a little past the Nate the Great series and looking for a beginning chapter book, The Mysteries of Maisie Hitchins is sure to be a new favorite. Maisie is a wonderful character with a big personality. Eddie is adorable and just as much a part of the story. Between the two of them, you get some laughs, but also a true mystery solving duo. Maisie is very specific with evidence and how to handle herself. With her trusty notebook, she jots down notes and keeps her thoughts going towards what may have happened. Beginning readers will easily follow along without losing track of clues that have already been found. I read this with my oldest, who is not quite at chapter book reading yet, and she adored it. I'd say that it will hit the 2nd-3rd grade readers best.
