It is good for beginners and those already on the path to turning profit into passion. I have been an entrepreneur now for about 4 years, and it is difficult to explain how hard, but how rewarding, it can be. Making a profit from our passions really IS one of the most responsible and positive things one can do with his or her life, because as Marianne Williamson says. "Staying small doesn't help anyone in the long run."But it requires an enormous amount of energy on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Unfortunately, our culture tends to drain us by instilling fear into us, and those of us who have chosen to turn our passion into profit often spend a lot of unnecessary time and energy (wasting our lives) defending ourselves, overcoming self-doubt, and creating obstacles in our own minds instead of taking concrete steps.Turning passion into profit, or becoming an entrepreneur, is one of the greatest experiences on earth, but this path can be lonely and messy. Nancy provides both hope and a sense of urgency that many of us need when self-doubt and fear creeps in. She provides concrete examples of action steps to take NOW in order to gain momentum and finally realize our dreams and goals. She also explains the logic and mechanics behind how to make it all work, so that it doesn’t seem like some crazy dream or lifestyle, but an actual, viable, choice. (Because it IS!) She takes you behind the scenes so that it no longer seems like “magic” or “luck.”Entrepreneurship is still not for everyone. In order to make it happen, one must actually TAKE the steps as outlined in the book, not just read about theories and concepts. I have already found a few things I’m going to do this week!

I couldn't have found it at a better time either. I was feeling down about my decision to pursue entrepreneurship, and found this book. It not only validated my decision to make the leap, it supplemented it with great action tips for getting started. Mrs. Gathecha's story is truly inspirational and serves as a reminder of what you can do if you put your mind to it. I highly recommend this book. It is easy to read, and will leave you excited to get started.

The characters are so well developed you feel like you know them. The scenery is so well described you have a perfect vision of it. And then there's the action! I love this series and this third volume exceeds expectations!

By Blaine Moore Darkfire picks up from the end of Mystic, with Loren and company being pursued from pretty much any organized group that they've come across. About the only people that aren't still out to get them are the den of thieves that they met earlier and left behind after leaving the city, with the King's Law, the Mystics and an unethical family of merchants all chasing them across the land. We begin to really see the glimmerings of the wider picture and threat to the land in this book, as our heroes find an abandoned fort that isn't as abandoned as they'd been led to believe and which is acting as a staging area for an invasion. The stakes are high, and not everybody is destined to survive.Looking forward to the 4th book in the series.

A Good Read By Jessamine Haak Darkfire, as the end of the first trilogy in the Nightblade epic, is a well-rounded finale to this first section of Loren's life. It contains fight scenes so well-written that they fairly spring to life from the page, intimidating villains, vividly-described monsters, and thought-provoking moral dilemmas that are not commonly found in a large range of fantasy books. The main characters can be somewhat polarising, but on purpose, in order to further this invitation to examine some widely-held fantasy tropes, and none of them are unsympathetic even when they present a point of view the reader or even other characters may disagree with.Exciting and excellently-paced, pick up this book if you are looking for an introduction to a good, thoughtful fantasy series.

Facing a short life of brutal servitude as one of the May Queen's executioners, she chooses instead a reckless dash for freedom alongside her sister-captive, Lavender. Yet even if the two women manage to flee the otherworld to return earthside, they may never be safe from the reach of cruel faeries who seek to use them as pawns in a deadly game. When a strange silver man calling himself Clarent unexpectedly dumps out onto the doorstep of their apartment, Rose and Lavender will work together with a diverse community of survivors in order to stay alive and free. Through the magical dangers that assault them on all sides, Rose must navigate the struggles brought on by her painful past while contending with the difficulty of forging an intimate relationship with the two people who love her most when her very body is lethal.

An adult fantasy full of adventure and affection By David Ana Mardoll gives us an inventive vision of Faerie and its relation to the mundane world: the cold, egotistical Fae steal humans, erase their memories and change their forms to use them as toys, tools -- or as weapons in their internecine wars. Rose is a beautiful weapon, changed to be a seductress with a literally deadly kiss. She and Lavender, a captive transformed into a fragrant decoration, escape back to normal Earth (this much can be read in the "Look Inside" sample pages) to apparent safety. But Rose is still wracked by the guilty memories of the men she was forced to kill, and both are, like others in the small community of returnees, bereft of most memories of their original lives. And then -- the Faerie world begins to hunt them. Danger piles on danger, and Rose is forced to use the power she hates in defense. The story builds through many inventive twists to a satisfying climax.I deliberately use the word "adult" in the title above because there is one moderately explicit scene of some limber three-way sex. But unlike other books I could name, there is not a trace of power or aggression in it. It is simply three good friends, giving pleasure to each other with affection and joy (which makes it all the more erotic). This scene, like all the rest of the book, is suffused with a sympathy, warmth and generosity that make it a pleasure to inhabit.

This book beats them all hands down. Most of the stories I've read either try to get that gritty street story feeling that ends up being ugly instead of gritty, or write a story that is kind of abstract but comes off too vague to be entertaining. This book does neither. Instead this story realistic in its approach. What would happen if you escaped from the fae.The author is very logical in her approach with fairy and fairy magic and is very believable in the context of the story. The author created a story that breaths new life in, at least to me, tired old genre. The only critique of this book was that I wished the author gave more personality to the love interests. The story is well thought out, fast pace, and very entertaining. I would definitely recommend this book and have no problems giving this a five star

Griffin Excellent story; there's a vast cast of characters, all well-developed and subverting or outright defying expectations, and I found myself falling in love with (and rooting for) even minor characters. The plot builds steadily to a tense and exciting climax that had me holding my breath as I clicked from page to page, and the solution to the main character's dilemma was both surprising and satisfying! This book kept me up way past my bedtime, and I regret nothing.

“Where the pole beans climb, where the tomatoes grow fat, where the onions smell sweet and the corn is yellow as the summer sun, that’s the garden of Clem — Farmer Clem.” So begins this story about Baby Mouse, a tiny mouse who loves to go exploring in the garden. But watch out! You never know what might happen when Baby climbs into a head of lettuce, or up a tomato plant, or when there’s a fox on the prowl. These are some of the ingredients of The Pea Patch Jig — a book as refreshing as a summer evening in Vermont.Inspired by the traditional song "The Pea Patch Jig," which was unearthed by the great songwriter singer John Hartford.

The Pea Patch JigFrom Creston Books

From Publishers Weekly Baby Mouse gets into mischief in triplicate in these three separate but equally antic stories about a tiny family that lives by Farmer Clem's garden. Ages 3-6. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1 Colorful, lively, funny, original. Right away children will expect something special: on the front cover Baby Mouse, in her diaper and red bow, dances with her folks. A dazzling arrangement of garden vegetables decorates the white endpapers. This is the overture, and when the action begins every page is a discovery and a smile. Over in the garden that Farmer Clem unknowingly shares with the tiny Mouse family, preparations are on for a midsummer party. Mother and Father Mouse have their backs turned, so Baby wanders away. She soon tires and climbs into a head of lettuce to rest. Meanwhile, Farmer Clem gathers his salad fixings, including (you guessed it) the very lettuce that shelters our young explorer. A brave rescue follows, and more adventures, too. In a grand finale, costumed mice kick up their heels while Grandpa fiddles away at The Pea Patch Jig. Those natty alligators dancing the night away in Mama Don't Allow (Harper, 1984) never had more fun than this crowd. Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Regional Library, Alexandria, Va.Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "Colorful, lively, funny, original." — School Library Journal, Starred ReviewSchool Library Journal, Best Book of the Year 1986"Illustrations in brilliant, glowing primary colors and a simple text tell the story of Father Mouse, Mother Mouse, and Baby Mouse. . . Energy pulsates throughout the whole book, from the endpapers of crisp, juicy vegetables to the mice dancing in their garden costumes. . . A festive salad of a book, filled with snap, crackle, and crunch."— The Horn Book"Lively visual humor, luminous color and a sure sense of design bring the simple text to vibrant life."— Kirkus Reviews"Though the baby mouse in Hurd's latest frolic is still in diapers, she already has a mind of her own. . . Hurd's fluid paintings make Farmer Clem's garden a cheerful camouflage for the Mouse family and their willful baby; his kaleidoscopic colors and mischievous sense of humor make this book ripe for the picking."— Publishers Weekly"Bright, jazzy shapes and colors complement this sprightly ode to vegetables, which concludes with a joyous hoe-down in the moonlight, the mice dressed up as vegetables, Baby as a bright green pea."— University of Chicago, Bulletin for Children's Books"Hurd has concocted a high-spirited story about a mouse family who lives on Farmer Clem's property. . . The artwork is some of Hurd's best, featuring bright watercolors in summertime hues and strong, energetic line work. The action fairly skips across the pages, and children will feel the music of the original 'Pea Patch Jig' that is included, even without hearing it."— Booklist". . .a delightful children's story about a family of mice who dwell quietly in a lovely garden patch tended by Farmer Clem. Incredibly delicate, expressive watercolor illustrations bring the exuberant Mouse family to life in their vegetable patch home. There are exciting moments (Baby Mouse crawls away to sleep in a lettuce, ending up in Farmer Clem's salad basket), dramatic moments (a fox appears to raid the Mouse family in the garden at night), and festive moments (the Mouse family has a garden party, with dancing, vegetable costumes, music, and moonlight) galore.'The Pea Patch Jig' dances merrily through pages of fabulous illustrations, vibrant vegetables, and one courageous Baby Mouse who saves the day with her pea shooting skills."--Midwest Book Review"Back in print, Hurd’s exuberant picture book is inspired by the folksong of the same name, but contains a straightforward narrative text. The story is broken into three chapters but can be read straight through like a regular picture book. The plot concerns a mouse family living in the garden of Farmer Clem, and their preparations for a party.Hurd’s joyous, deeply colored watercolor and ink cartoonish illustrations feature mice characters in human dress, similar to many of his other books such as Mama Don’t Allow (1984) and Mystery on the Docks (1983). There is a looseness to the drawings, that combine with the deep colors to depict a warm, homey atmosphere that suits the story well. Libraries will want to purchase this reissue to replace old worn copies of this popular book by a Bay Area author."--Bay Views and more. . .

While Baby Mouse is shooting peas out of her window and scaring away foxes, Father Mouse is knocking blenders onto Farmer Clem's shoulder! So venture into a wonderful children's book where 'The corn is as bright as the summer sun'!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it a great first experience with "Chapter Books" while still being fully ... By Peg This book is a must read for parents to share with their pre-schoolers ... it a great first experience with "Chapter Books" while still being fully illustrated. My daughter was only two when we checked this book out from our local library. We walked there every week and would bring home our limit but she always wanted to keep the Pea Patch Jig an extra week. Then we would return it and a few weeks later she would see it back on the table in the Children's section of the Library and bring it back to me begging to check it out again. It wasn't long before she could "read" the entire book on her own. We took a video of this which to this day is my favorite video. A two year old reading a "chapter book" turning each page and "reading" each word while vocalizing all the appropriate expressions to match the written words. She is 26 now and I have purchased two of these books ... one for her home, and one for mine. Thank you Thacher Hurd for planting the seed that grew into an enduring love of books in my daughter ... she now has a Masters degree in English, teaches High School English, and besides being a gifted song writer, she is now in the process of writing her own novels.

The Pea Patch Jig By VICKIE DUFF I thought I had saved most of the books my kids loved; I loaned them to my sister for her twins, and when they outgrew them, she called me one day to see if I wanted them back. I did! My then-teenagers and I sat around the kitchen table and laughed as we read our favorite stories one more time. Then I put them away for my future grandchildren. Now I have 3 grandchildren, and have been reading those favorites to the oldest 2 for 5 years. Last year my son and his wife had their first baby, and for his first birthday, my son asked me to get him a copy of the Pea Patch Jig. I immediately remembered it, but also remembered we had read it to pieces and it was not in my collection. So, I found it through Amazon and it arrived in time for Ian's first birthday. What a hilarious story it is, and the artwork is fabulous. I highly recommend this book to anyone with kids 2 and up. It's so funny!

By mamabee1314 I have loved every single Fisher Price Little People book since I can remember, and this one is no exception!! I LOVE the lift the flaps, my kids were literally entertained for hours discovering oh Santa is here!! Oh look, presents!! I am working to really instill a love of reading in my kids, who are both still really young( 2 and 1), and so far they have been latching on to reading like crazy!! And these books make it easy. Bright colors, fun flaps to find cool things, an easy to follow story line, and with it being a hard board book, its durable and lasts through my toddlers fighting over it over and over again. Another great Fisher Price book!!

Later we realized this version has different illustrations than the other Little People flap books - the people aren't nearly as cute and "rounded" and the illustrations were far busier. What a bummer! We ended up getting the same book as our original (confusingly titled the exact same "Christmastime is Here") at Target, where we could verify the illustrations were more like the other Little People flip books (such as the school, zoo and Noah's ark ones).

Highs and Lows on the John Muir Trail, by Inga Aksamit

Review "The current popularity of long-distance walking means that many new personal narratives have appeared in the past years. Inga Aksamit's book is a wonderful addition to these "trail tales," as she describes the 23-day trip she and her husband took along the John Muir Trail.Readers will especially be drawn to this narrative both because it is very well written and accurate and because it represents the experience of an "everyday" person. She and her husband set out on the JMT to challenge themselves with a much longer backcountry adventure than they'd previously completed ... but not to launch into a completely unknown activity. Aksamit had backpacked frequently before her trip, had trained for her trip, and meticulously planned her itinerary, food, and gear. Her extensive planning made her aware of all the problems that might arise - she does a superb job of weaving these into her story, one-by-one as many of the anticipated problems do materialize - medical problems, rare weather events, gear problems, and lack of motivation. I was especially drawn to her descriptions of how her mood, physical strength, and motivation shifted from day-to-day - as she sometimes found "difficult" sections to be straightforward and dragged where the going should have been "easy". As a guidebook author, I have to force myself to detach how I feel at a given moment from my "unbiased" perception of the terrain; it was wonderful to read an account that emphasized how difficult it is to predict how you'll feel on a given stretch of trail and what progress you'll make." -Elizabeth Wenk, author of "John Muir Trail: The Essential Guide to America's Most Famous Hiking Trail"

About the Author Inga Aksamit is an award-winning author based in Northern California whose passion is adventure and exploration. Very insightful account of what hiking the JMT entails By Elizabeth Wenk The current popularity of long-distance walking means that many new personal narratives have appeared in the past years. Inga Aksamit's book is a wonderful addition to these "trail tales," as she describes the 23-day trip she and her husband took along the John Muir Trail.Readers will especially be drawn to this narrative both because it is very well written and accurate and because it represents the experience of an "everyday" person. She and her husband set out on the JMT to challenge themselves with a much longer backcountry adventure than they'd previously completed and to experience the changing perspective one has after multiple weeks in the backcountry, but not to launch into a completely unknown activity. As a guidebook author, I have to force myself to detach how I feel at a given moment from my "unbiased" perception of the terrain; it was wonderful to read an account that emphasized how difficult it is to predict how you'll feel on a given stretch of trail and what progress you'll make. As she and her husband experienced, two people hiking together will have different "good" and "bad" days - and will therefore have very different memories of stretches of the trail. Finally, I appreciate her repeated emphasis that she was "hiking her own hike" - and comfortable with that decision. She reflected upon other hikers with faster or slower itineraries, but did not deride others for choosing a different JMT experience.

We read all the trail guides, agonize over gear decisions, scrutinize every calorie we carry, and look to shave ounces here and there. Particularly for hikers who are new to multi-week hikes, we show up at the trailhead with the right stuff, but not necessarily fully prepared. What about the "inside game" of a long hike?I can think of no better way to prepare oneself for the psychological rigors of the trail than by reading Ms. Aksamit's "Highs and Lows on the John Muir Trail."From unforeseen medical problems to the struggle to eat enough to the challenges of the near constant climbing, Ms. Aksamit tells her story with refreshing honesty and candor. By reading this book, potential JMT hikers will get the insights necessary to ensure that they are ready with the right attitude and expectations to ensure success. As the author of a planning guide to hiking the John Muir Trail, you can bet that I'll be recommending this book to my readers. Once you have your stuff, you still need to get your "head right;" and there is no better way to do so than to read "Highs and Lows on the John Muir Trail."

Really wanted to click on the pictures at the end of each chapter and see them bigger as they were so beautifully composed. (Found them on your blog!). Thank you for sharing that bit of yourself (and Steve). And the story was just that, a great story interspersed with some hiking feats that accomplished what I feel you were possibly expecting; a journey of the soul. I laughed quite a bit at the mental chatter because it is so reflective of what we all go through when we are doing things that challenge us and feed us. And your descriptions of your trail companions both 2 legged & 4 were great. there were a couple times I waited for the other shoe to drop, and it did but never in a bad way! Congratulations!

Great country to visit By Jewel For me Greece is one of those marvelous places, almost mystical in some way because of its history and such an attractive place to travel I’ve been wanting to go there for years, I want to know as much as I can that’s why I wanted this book and now more than ever I want to go there. just reading about those places, the beaches, food, that alone makes so much promise but the book has many more exciting things for you to know about Greece that you couldn’t help feel more interested in knowing everything and see everything for yourself, at least that was my case plus in all honesty, this guide will explain everything you need to know when you're finally there, you’ll would be able to know which places to go are best and everything about them, also there are some interesting advises for you to buy on your trip and of course where to buy them. Even if I’m not planning to know Greece soon this book has been an excellent reading and provide with interesting and useful information that I can use in the not so distant future.

The Clockwise Collection Finale! The stress created by Casey’s recent split from Nate causes her to trip back in time in a haphazard manner, and not always to the same time! Sometimes she’s in 1929 Boston getting more entangled than ever with the mishaps of her new and not-so-helpful friends, and at other times she’s back in 1775 trying to make sure the colonists still win the war of Independence! Will the craziness ever stop? And will she and Nate work out things in time for graduation? *** The Clockwise Collection is light science fiction (historical) time travel with a nice splash of young adult romance!

By Heather In the previous book, Casey and Nate tripped back and seriously messed up their own timeline. Casey returned to the past, fixed it, then returned home to a fixed timeline, but a broken relationship with Nate. Their breakup sends Casey back to the 1920s, right into the path of ANOTHER time traveler. He recognises Casey as a kindred soul and takes her back with him to the time of Paul Revere... who just happens to be Paul Jr's father! Paul Jr wants Casey to help him make sure the historical midnight ride goes off as as scheduled. But Casey knows what happens now when she meddles with the time line, should she help? And if she does, is she ready to face more changes to her own timeline... Including Nate ending up with (gasp) Jessica! This book has Casey tripping back and forth through altered time lines, trying to find the right one and ending up in ones that are just not right. Can anyone help her make it back to her own?The characters have matured and grown, while tripping, Casey learns some things about herself, including the fact that she' strong and can handle just about anything time throws at her... Well, almost anything...Very good read for YA and adults alike. Totally recommend this author!I received a free copy of this book for an honest review. I love this series!

Casey’s life was spiraling out of control; messing with her personal life and her time traveling life as well. With the way things were going she may have changed the world as she knew it for the worse. Only time will tell if she will be able to right all her wrongs...There is no easy way to review this book without giving away major plots and spoilers. But I loved it! I quickly read through this book and loved every second of it. The not knowing of where Casey would end up every time she tripped was what pulled me in. And if she ended up changing her present world was what had me hanging on to every word. I was scared about her future. So many things were changing with each trip that you never knew what to expect. If you have been keeping up with the amazing series then you are most definitely going to want to read this book. If you haven't caught up this far in the series, then what are you waiting for? Hurry!! It is a must read! 5 Stars!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Didn't want it to end! By Tracy L. Johnson Immediately purchased this book after reading Counter Clockwise. This story was a fitting end for the series. I hate to see Casey and Nate's story end. This picks up right where Counter Clockwise leaves off. Casey's reeling from the breakup with Nate and that sends her tripping back in time. Also, she meets another time traveler and she gets sucked into another time line with Paul Revere Jr. where she has to help him fix things. The title for this story is so fitting because once again the time loop is messed up, and nothing is as it should be so Casey is tripping from timeline to timeline trying to fix her time loop. Casey continues to grow as a character in this story. She realizes that she is a strong person, and when push comes to shove she can get herself out of her own messes. I think this story was about Casey realizing who she is and not relying on others to get her out of trouble. She was definitely a stronger character by the end of this book. However, I love Nate as well, and I wanted to see more of him in this story. Also, I felt that the ending was rushed. Love the series overall!

Everything rises and falls on leadership. Leadership is the most critical ingredient in any organization. We all understand the importance of good leadership and know it when we see it, but describing or teaching leadership is elusive at best. A lot is written about leadership and its many philosophies. Words and phrases such as “hierarchal structures,” “reframing,” “leader charisma,” “stewardship,” “stakeholders,” “lines of authority,” “distribution of power,” “lateral thinking,” “implementation by objective,” “systems thinking,” “group cohesiveness,” and “transactional leadership,” get bandied about. Programs that somehow manage to be both complex and imprecise are offered as the path to effective leadership. But is being a good leader really all that complicated? Are there intricate techniques to be analyzed, mastered, and applied? Or, is it that great leaders are born, not made? The answer to these questions is, “absolutely not.” With The Shipbuilder, speaker and business leader Jack Myrick shares five simple, time-proven principles that, are guaranteed to make you an extraordinary leader. This delightful business management allegory set in ancient Greece teaches the Five Principles of Leadership.

Easy Read with good advice By Brandy I read a lot of books on leadership, and even though most of them are informative, some of them are heavy and take time to study. I loved how the author put five basic principles in a parable which makes for an easy read and the principles are doable in business life and in personal life. This is a great book to have when you have a few minutes to spare and you would like to read something fun and applicable to life.

For 19 years, Jonathan Rebeck has hidden from the world within the confines of the Bronx’s Yorkchester Cemetery, making an abandoned mausoleum his secret home. He speaks with the newly dead as they pass from life to wherever spirits eventually go, providing them with comfort, an understanding ear, and even the occasional game of chess. But Mr. Rebeck’s reclusive life is soon to be disrupted. An impossible love has blossomed between two ghosts, and Rebeck himself is drawn to a living woman. Helped along by a cynical talking raven and a mysterious cemetery guard, these four souls must learn the true difference between life and death, and make choices that really are forever. Told with humor and an elegiac wisdom, Beagle’s first novel is a timeless work of fantasy, imbued with hope and wonder. This updated edition contains the author’s final revisions, and stands as the definitive edition of an enduring modern classic. “Synchronicity is a funny thing. There I was in my column, mentioning how A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE is one of my favorite books, and the next thing I know there is a new reprint of it sitting in my P.O. box. Now the fear I always have of going back to something I haven't reread in a long time is that it won't measure up to the warm affection I carry for it in my memories. But happily, that wasn't the case here. I didn't even mean to reread it. I simply thought I'd try a few pages to see how it fared and the next thing I knew it was late at night and I was half-way through... A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE is just as wonderful as I remembered it to be: beautifully written, the characters warmly drawn, the pages filled with conversations that range the gamut of the human condition. In these days of everything coming in quick sound bites, at a faster and faster pace, Beagle's novel might seem quaint as it takes its time to tell its story. But you know, there's a reason that people still read Dickens and Austin, and there's a reason they'll appreciate this book: quality counts." —Charles de Lint, author of WIDDERSHINS and MOONHEART —Peter S. Beagle was born in 1939 and raised in the Bronx, just a few blocks from Woodlawn Cemetery, the inspiration for his first novel, A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE. Today, thanks to classic works such as THE LAST UNICORN, TAMSIN, and THE INNKEEPER'S SONG, he is acknowledged as America's greatest living fantasy author; and his dazzling abilities with language, characters, and magical storytelling have earned him many millions of fans around the world. In addition to stories and novels Beagle has written numerous teleplays and screenplays, including the animated versions of THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE LAST UNICORN, plus the fan-favorite “Sarek” episode of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. His nonfiction book I SEE BY MY OUTFIT, which recounts a 1963 journey across America on motor scooter, is considered a classic of American travel writing; and he is also a gifted poet, lyricist, and singer-songwriter. He has won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and Mythopoeic Awards, along with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Association, and also France's prestigious Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire.

Questions for Peter S. Beagle

Jeff VanderMeer for Amazon.com: When you were writing A Fine and Private Place, did you have any idea it was going to have such staying power?

Beagle: No. Not at all, of course. When I was 19 years old I never thought in terms of classics or being permanently around. I'd known enough writers, even at that age, to see that what happens to your work is so far out of your control you simply can't afford to let that kind of concern enter your thinking.

Amazon.com: The publisher asked you to remove four chapters from the book. At the time, did you agree with the decision? Have your feelings about it changed over the years?

Beagle: At the time I was outraged. I fought every step of the way, and every sentence. Today I'm inordinately grateful to Marshall Best, the editor who did that. Marshall is long gone, so I just hope that back then I had sense and courtesy enough to say thank you. But I don't think I realized fully what his effect on the book had been until many years later. If it weren’t for him I don’t think the book would still be in print. He's also the one who came up with the title and the allusion to those marvelously appropriate lines from Andrew Marvell's "To His Coy Mistress"--I'd originally called the book The Dark City, after the way that Jonathan Rebeck saw the graveyard. Titles, sad to say, have never been my strong suit. Most of my best have actually come from friends or editors.

Amazon.com: To what extent are any of the characters in A Fine and Private Place autobiographical? I ask because the detail work in the novel, especially with regard to older people, seems so fresh and free of cliche.

Beagle: I think that A Fine and Private Place is very nearly, though not quite, my first attempt to capture the voices in the Bronx neighborhood where I grew up. Nobody is based on any one person, but there’s a piece here and a piece there was useful. I hung fire on creating Laura Durant, when it came time to bring her into the story, until I decided to base her physically--not emotionally, but physically--on a Pittsburgh actress I was in a play with. I just didn't know enough young women in those days. And there are scenes in there which people from the old neighborhood would recognize--when Mrs. Klapper goes into the Wireman's grocery, that is very much the little store on the corner across from my house. Yet even there I mixed things up. I think what keeps the book fresh isn't the fantasy, but the fact that I was trying very hard to make it real. To make the voices real. In the end it is always the voices, for me.

Amazon.com: Your books have, over the years, resonated with readers everywhere. Have reader reactions or opinions changed the way you think of the books?

Beagle: Only in the sense that they sometimes make me go back and look at them. When you do this writing thing day by day, you don't do a lot of reflecting on your own relationship to the old work. What does get me, though, is just how much the books have actually influenced the real lives of real people in ways I couldn't imagine. That’s enormously touching for me.

Amazon.com: One of my favorite moments in your fiction is when the true Medieval infringes on the fake Medieval in The Folk of the Air. You manage to convey a real sense of the alien perspective--a sense that if we were to travel back in time, we might find our ancestors as hard to understand as we would creatures from outer space. Did you research your way into that moment and that effect, or...?

Beagle: I've thought about it a lot, having read a great deal of history (my father was a history teacher). And there are fiction writers out there who are so good at bringing the literal stink of a certain period into your nostrils as you read...well, for me they are intimidating, because there are novels I'd like to write based on certain historical events that I'm just not sure I could. In the case of The Folk of the Air I did a lot of research, from many angles, because the real group that my imaginary one was based on didn't limit itself to a narrow span of time, but rather built characters and personas out of events as far back as the Viking era and as recent as 1650. And the history as presented in their gatherings wasn't necessarily the most accurate. So on the one hand I was trying to go for a certain sense of the real, when it does come, in contrast to some fanciful, semi-informed imaginings.

Amazon.com: What are you currently working on--and where should we look for your short fiction in the next year or so?

Beagle: In terms of short fiction, I've got a chapbook coming out from Dreamhaven Books early in 2008 called Strange Roads, with three stories inspired by the art of Lisa Snellings-Clark. There are also six or eight pieces of short fiction appearing in various original fantasy anthologies, magazines, and fiction websites, and I'm working on a quartet of season-themed stories that will premiere not in print, but as podcasts. That last set is for a wonderful little website called The Green Man Review. They did a whole special issue about me and also named me their official Oak King this year, so it's the least I could do. In terms of book-length work, 2008 is going to be absolutely crazy with original books and reprints. Just crazy. There are a couple of new novels finally coming out, a manga-style graphic adaptation of The Last Unicorn, several new collections, and at least two nonfiction books. I can hardly keep track of it all myself, so the best way for anyone to stay up to date would be to visit my website or Conlan Press, or just sign up for my free email newsletter, The Raven. Whatever else I might think about being 68, the simple fact is that I'm busier than ever. It's like George Burns used to say: "I can't die--I'm booked!"

Review "I can't think of a better book to buy for someone you love this holiday season."—Omnivoracious.com“One of literature’s most beautiful works about ghostly times and places...told with wit, charm, and a sense of individuality.”—New York Times Book Review“A Fine & Private Place is just as wonderful as I remembered it to be: beautifully written, the characters warmly drawn, the pages filled with conversations that run the gamut of the human condition.... It’s a great book in a lovely affordable package.”—Fantasy & Science Fiction“Both sepulchral and oddly appealing.... [Beagle’s] ectoplasmic fable has a distinct mossy charm.”—TIME Magazine “Delightful!”—San Francisco Chronicle“A sweet, sad, and smart novel about life, death and love...a book that has endured for a reason.”—The Agony Column“A wonderful work of literature...a gem of a novel.”—BookLoons “Over a cold beverage and a hot bowl of chili, Peter Beagle recently told me how he came to write A Fine & Private Place. He was just nineteen years old at the time, the length of time that Mr. Rebeck spent in that cemetery. He was working as a counselor at a boys’ summer camp. Once the campers were settled for the night there wasn’t much for the counselors to do. Those who had sweethearts at the girls’ camp across the lake would borrow canoes and paddle across to see them. Peter had no such luck, he told me, so he warmed up his rattly little portable typewriter, cracked open a ream of paper, and starting writing a book. We are all incredibly lucky that Peter had no girlfriend that summer.”—Dick Lupoff, SF Site“An amazing read.... If fantastically developed characters trapped between love and death appeal to you, this is a nearly perfect book.”—Paperblog

This is a wonderful look at life and death, of people who are afraid to live and people who are afraid to die, and how in many ways they are the same fear. It is also a delicate romance, but not in the mushy or "romance novel" sense. It doesn't have the action and the sweep of some of Beagle's other books, but it has the depth and the heart. It doesn't plod, as the other reviewer said, but it is lovely and slow, written in the smooth and elegant prose that is the hallmark of Beagle's best work. Was he really only 19 when he wrote it? You know a great book by Beagle when you never want it to end, and this is one. It isn't like any other book, so I can't compare it to anything. Read it.

33 of 34 people found the following review helpful. my favorite love story (and by the way, I hate love stories) By Kevin D. Flythe Although undoubtedly most well-known for his novel "The Last Unicorn," Peter S. Beagle's "A Fine and Private Place" has always been a personal favorite of mine. The title is taken from the Andrew Marvell poem, "To His Coy Mistress." The line is as follows: "The grave's a fine and private place, but none, I think, do there embrace." The story Beagle tells in this novel is of two ghosts who in death find a richer love than ever they knew in life, a love which is all the more precious to them because its doom is that it cannot last.Peter Beagle is simply the most amazing writer ever (IMHO), and so I highly recommend all of his works. This one in particular, though, has always been special to me. The writing is so simple that it's beautiful. And the story of Michael and Laura's love is so touching,... there was a chapter in the book that was so painfully lovely that it actually brought tears to my eyes, one of only two times that I can remember being brought to tears by a book.I can't recommend it highly enough. It's amazing in so many ways. For one, nearly the entire book takes place in a single graveyard, a place which becomes so real to me that I wish it were indeed real so that I might be buried there myself. The characters are unforgettable as well. Even the talking raven is wonderful, whereas I usually abhor loquacious animals (look for the squirrel and the raven's conversation, it is hands down the most hilarious section of the novel!).Besides all that, it's a love story, which may be a plus to some of you. For the rest of you out there who hate love stories, I understand, becuase I hate them too. But Beagle's romance totally pulled me in. He has a way of doing that, you know, making me fall in love with things I thought I hated (see my review of The Last Unicorn).Don't miss it. If you've read The Last Unicorn then you know how great this guy writes, so go ahead and read it already! If not, pick it up anyway, then go out and read The Last Unicorn, Innkeeper's Song, Tamsin... you get the picture.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. From Love, To Life By Patrick Shepherd What defines life? Where is the line between alive and dead? What makes life worth living? Sound like an outline for a course in philosophy? But these questions are what drives this lyrical, quiet, and unassuming story of two ghosts, a raven, a man caught somewhere in-between the living and the dead, and a very traditional Jewish widow. The raven has an attitude, but insists on dragging sandwiches to Mr. Rebeck, a pharmacist who decided to live in the cemetery many years ago. Mr. Rebeck is lonely most of the time, except when there is a new burial, for then that person's ghost will stick around a little while and keep him company, until the ghost forgets what it is to be human, to be alive.Michael Morgan and Laura are two such new ghosts. Each has a conflicted past, not fully remembered, and take different approaches to this new state of 'living', Michael trying fiercely to retain all he can of himself and his past, Laura trying to fully leave the world of the living. Mr. Rebeck suddenly finds himself with an unusually rich set of company, for besides Michael and Laura, he finds himself involved with the widow Mrs. Klapper, coming to visit the tomb of her husband. Each of these characters is finely delineated, their conversations with each other slowly illuminating their pasts, their ambitions, their fears, and their hopes. From a little evening singing, quiet walks, the raven bringing news of the outside world, the story is built bit by little bit, with no large dramatic moments until the very end. It is, in essence, a character study, and each character's approach to life imposes its message about life's meaning and purpose. There are some fairly deep philosophical ruminations presented within this, part and parcel of the story line, stated with ease and a poetic feel that suffuses this entire work, with the raven perhaps as the cynic to provide some balance and comedy relief. Ah, but the final point is the attraction these characters begin to feel for each other, all quite logical, even predictable, but the result we end with is a believable love story of both the dead and the living.Perhaps this work could have done with a little more action, a little more drama. But then again, adding such elements might have spoiled this poem in prose. Not perfect, but certainly one of the more unusual and very readable fantasy works I've read, with a set of ideas that possibly could not have been investigated in any other literary genre.--- Reviewed by Patrick Shepherd (hyperpat)
