Rose awakens in a fairytale land, stripped of her memories and any sense of self she might once have possessed. Facing a short life of brutal servitude as one of the May Queen's executioners, she chooses instead a reckless dash for freedom alongside her sister-captive, Lavender. Yet even if the two women manage to flee the otherworld to return earthside, they may never be safe from the reach of cruel faeries who seek to use them as pawns in a deadly game. When a strange silver man calling himself Clarent unexpectedly dumps out onto the doorstep of their apartment, Rose and Lavender will work together with a diverse community of survivors in order to stay alive and free. Through the magical dangers that assault them on all sides, Rose must navigate the struggles brought on by her painful past while contending with the difficulty of forging an intimate relationship with the two people who love her most when her very body is lethal.

An adult fantasy full of adventure and affection By David Ana Mardoll gives us an inventive vision of Faerie and its relation to the mundane world: the cold, egotistical Fae steal humans, erase their memories and change their forms to use them as toys, tools -- or as weapons in their internecine wars. Rose is a beautiful weapon, changed to be a seductress with a literally deadly kiss. She and Lavender, a captive transformed into a fragrant decoration, escape back to normal Earth (this much can be read in the "Look Inside" sample pages) to apparent safety. But Rose is still wracked by the guilty memories of the men she was forced to kill, and both are, like others in the small community of returnees, bereft of most memories of their original lives. And then -- the Faerie world begins to hunt them. Danger piles on danger, and Rose is forced to use the power she hates in defense. The story builds through many inventive twists to a satisfying climax.I deliberately use the word "adult" in the title above because there is one moderately explicit scene of some limber three-way sex. But unlike other books I could name, there is not a trace of power or aggression in it. It is simply three good friends, giving pleasure to each other with affection and joy (which makes it all the more erotic). This scene, like all the rest of the book, is suffused with a sympathy, warmth and generosity that make it a pleasure to inhabit.

This book beats them all hands down. Most of the stories I've read either try to get that gritty street story feeling that ends up being ugly instead of gritty, or write a story that is kind of abstract but comes off too vague to be entertaining. This book does neither. Instead this story realistic in its approach. What would happen if you escaped from the fae.The author is very logical in her approach with fairy and fairy magic and is very believable in the context of the story. The author created a story that breaths new life in, at least to me, tired old genre. The only critique of this book was that I wished the author gave more personality to the love interests. The story is well thought out, fast pace, and very entertaining. I would definitely recommend this book and have no problems giving this a five star

Griffin Excellent story; there's a vast cast of characters, all well-developed and subverting or outright defying expectations, and I found myself falling in love with (and rooting for) even minor characters. The plot builds steadily to a tense and exciting climax that had me holding my breath as I clicked from page to page, and the solution to the main character's dilemma was both surprising and satisfying! This book kept me up way past my bedtime, and I regret nothing.
