A small, northeastern town is crippled after a mysterious electromagnetic pulse causes a massive blackout, leaving residents stunned and unprepared. But the loss of power is only the beginning. Communications and mobility have been disabled with vehicles stopped dead in their tracks for miles. Grocery stores, banks, hospitals, and other services no longer function. Cell phones, computers, televisions, and radios are rendered inoperable. In the chaos that follows, one family embarks on a journey of survival in a vastly different world, changed within a flash. Rob Parker owns a prepper shop in downtown Nyack, where he resides with his wife, Mila, and their two children. Following the strike, on the morning of September 12, 2016, he takes immediate action to hunker down in their bug-out cabin in the mountains along the Hudson River. Most of the town is clueless with little or no understanding of what has happened. But Rob knows that things will only get worse with emptied shelves, raided ATMs, no running water or sewage—a complete breakdown of law in order. He loads his bug-out vehicle, decades old and unaffected by the EMP, and sets out with Mila to their cabin. But there’s one major problem: their children are in New York City on a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum—a journey into the abyss they have no choice but to take. In this new thrilling disaster series, author Roger Hayden continues the saga of his best-selling EMP series, “The Pulse,” taking readers on an intense, terrifying journey through a digital-dependent world striped of both its modern conveniences and humanity.

PDF Ebook The Apocalypse Exile: The War of the Undead Novel 6 (The Undead World Series), by Peter Meredith

From the #1 selling Horror author on Amazon: Peter Meredith- The Apocalypse Exile  The journey across the zombie-filled country does not get easier for the renegades. The Great Plains, the heart-land of America is now home to vast herds of the undead. These savage hordes sometimes stretch as far as the eye can see. Among them live the Azael--men who have regressed back to the bloody and chaotic roots of our collective ancestors where only the strong or the blood-thirsty survive.   These far-flung tribes control the interior of the country, using great armies of zombies to inflict their will upon their neighbors. For the moment they are at peace with the soldiers of Colorado and for the moment they only see in Neil and the Renegades a way to make easy money escorting them across their lands at a steep price.  It's a moment that can't last.  The specter of death lurks among the group. It haunts them and strikes again and again until its appetite is wetted to a point where it can no longer hide behind the innocent face of Jillybean. What skulks in the depths of her mind is driven by ferocious desires, chief of which is the hunger for death. It's a hunger that will never be satiated not until each and every one of them is dead.Betrayal, murder, war--The Apocalypse Exile.

His writing is not for the squeamish. Bad things happen to good people as well as bad people. He really gets you to connect with the characters in his stories too. You can relate to them and to what they are experiencing in this horrific situation they find themselves in. I have read a number of Zompoc series and this one is right up there with some of the best. Another thing I really like about this author is the way his character's personalities change as time goes on and they are forced into situations that in a normal world they would have never found themselves in. They must adjust, adapt and overcome.....or perish. And in that mode, people will become hardened. So saying all this, I am letting you know that I enjoy this series and will purchase the next book. But I also have to say that, I wanted to give this book 5 Stars like I have given all the other books in the series. But I couldn't. And for one reason only. I will not put out any 'Spoilers' here. I hate reviews that do that. But, if you have followed the series, you will know who and what I'm directing this at. If you haven't, then I suggest you go out and purchase the previous books because you won't regret it. But you will also not know what I am talking about here. In this book, I think the author went far over the top with the actions of the character Jillybean to the point where she is irretrievable. He also spent so much time in the descriptive sense of the conversations with herself in the chapters dedicated to her, that it almost seemed like 'Filler', something he has never done before. The dialog became almost meandering. I found myself flipping pages just to get to the next chapter and away from it. He has taken Jillybean down a path I never expected, and was sorry to see. But the biggest and only drawback to this book is the 'Jillybean' chapters. But for me. it was enough to drop it from a 5 Star to a 4 star rating. And I am sorry about that. Some may disagree with me, and that's fine. This is just my own personal feelings.Another thing people who follow this series and have not read this installment should be aware of. This book is Very Dark. Lots of bad things happen. In the other installments, there were some brief moments of humor and levity. There are none here. It does not take away from the read. There is plenty of action, suspense, and hair raising page turning events, Zombies and Villains to keep you glued to it, with the exception, for me anyway, of the Jillybean chapters. I look forward to the next and final Installment , according to the author, of this series.

A disappointing glitch in a wonderful series By HorseHugger Is it just me, or was this book truly so very different from the first 5 books of this series??? I found the previous books absolutely riveting, but it was almost as if THIS book was written as "filler" material or something. Truthfully, I read the previous books some time ago, but they were still some of my favorite zombie apocalypse books. When I discovered books 6 and 7 were available, I was excited to buy them and couldn't wait to read them! However, this book fell FAR short of what I was expecting. The other books all had story-lines that were purposeful and exciting. This one, not so much. In my opinion, Jellybean's mental state was handled in an extremely tedious and repetitious way. (We get it ~ she'd become mentally unbalanced. You didn't have to keep describing her condition to me over and over and OVER again!!) Also, if memory served me correctly, the editing was sloppier in this book than the previous ones, too. (And, yes, if I'm paying my hard earned money on a book, I DO expect the author and/or publisher to respect their work product (and the reader!) enough to carefully proofread their book(s)!) However, what REALLY disappointed me was some of the author's awkward terminology. For instance, in Chapter 27 (yes, I was ticked off enough to note the chapter for this review!), the author uses the phrase "newly calved foal". What?!?!? The term "calved" applies only to cows and a foal is a newborn HORSE. Geeze! Another "note worthy" phrase was "he was crying fat tear-bulbs". LORDY! Anyway, even though I was very disappointed with this book, I didn't give up on the series and went on to read book seven. Mr. Meredith truly created some wonderful characters in this series. I just wish he had kept the momentum going with this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. If you are looking for a great zombie story By Audrey Peter Meredith does it again. If you are looking for a great zombie story, look no further. The 6th book in this series picks right up where the 5th book left off. The adventures of Neil, Sadie, Jillybean, Cpt. Grey, Deanna, and their crew continues but the outlook is grim. The usual optimism by the mild mannered Neil is gone as is the hope for the rest of the group. At first, I was unsure of whether I liked this book. I was turned off by the decline of Jillybean and felt as if it was unfair of Meredith to expose such a sweet little girl to such unimaginable horror. I, then, realized that Meredith had done his job. I was emotionally invested in these characters and felt sad for each of them. I missed Neil's optimism, Sadie's spunky character, and Jillybean's sweet and delusional antics. In this book, the characters all represented people on the edge. On the edge of insanity, on the edge of anger, on the edge of denial, on the edge of defeat, and I felt for each of them. I'm ready for the final book! Bring it on, Meredith! I'm impatiently waiting. . .

This is a short story, I thought it was novel length.2. The main characters were portrayed with very little depth.3. Additionally it was a bit boring. The sample was promising which is why I purchased it in the first place.4. It should have been free or maybe 99 cents--not 3.99.5. A very simple story almost seems like it was written by someone either very young or very inexperienced with writing. Assuming this author continues writing I think I'd wait at least a few more years before trying another one of her books.

This story had all three! A story of a princess in need of sanctuary, from her evil emperor father. A handsome dragon who needs her help. A sentient world in need of an avatar. Loved Brenn,is a half Drai princess with a talent for city planning. Dret, is, a Drai sleeper, who is helping his choosen home world Dharton bring the Citadel to him. Dharton the sentient world they meet on, and dream of each other. Hope there will be more stories from Citadel Dharton!

And I can honestly say I have read them all at least 10 times..I have never had a read I didn't love. My only complaint is she does not write fast enough and I wish she wrote longer stories, but she has good reasons, lolI

Chock full of information and tips to make your trip the best possible. This guide is focused on Florence and surrounding area. If you are only staying for a few days, the standard Italy guide will cover most of what you need. This guide goes into more detail and covers more secondary locations.

But then I got past the hokey-ness and realized there is a lot of good stuff there. I tend to find the country/area guides better than the city guides, but that's just me.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great content, cheap book quality By Thomas I like Rick Steve's travel guides and videos, and his books are usually my first "go-to" for travel planning. His Florence and Tuscany guide is filled with great insights helpful to those of us wishing to hit the highlights while avoiding the tourist traps, so no issues with the content. Instead, my two-stars reflect a "protest vote" of sorts against the extremely low physical quality of the book itself, whose pages and print are more akin to a phone book or a cheap newspaper. The print is visible through the pages, and is so light that I'm afraid it will smear if I touch it. The resolution of photos (all black and white) is so low as to be of little value other than to fill space. This would be less of a concern if the books carried a lower price, but being part of the Rick Steves empire they can charge what they want. C'mon Steve, for $18 we deserve more. Also, when will the Empire acknowledge the 21st century with electronic versions, as Lonely Planet has so successfully done.

The same as "Swedish Folk Tales" but with lower-quality illustrations By LoneGunman This book contains the exact same copy as "Swedish Folk Tales" (http://www.amazon.com/Swedish-Folk-Tales-Polly-Lawson/dp/0863154573) but with lower-quality images. I hypothesize that the text of these two books entered public domain so they both re-published. Go with "Swedish Folk Tales." It's a bigger, higher-quality book. I ordered both thinking there would be differentiation and there isn't.

Avonna just tried to commit suicide. But Avonna's not real—she's a low-AI, created as the android face of a shampoo brand. The video of her suicide attempt has gone viral, creating a massive headache for Lewis, the corporate salesman and fixer assigned to deal with the situation. This isn't the first time Lewis has dealt with the mess left by a Corporate Person. The last one thought she was in love. With him. But something about this situation feels different. With time running out and the higher-ups at his company watching his every move, Lewis must decide whether or not to have Avonna "decomped." An untenable choice that starts to look an awful lot like life or death ... From the story: I’d seen the video that morning as I spooned soggy cereal into my mouth. Shot on Avonna’s cell, she struts into a spacious bedroom wearing a pink bra and panties, hair damp from the shower. She stands in front of the mirror and powers on the blow dryer. Her eyes widen and she leans towards the mirror. A slight tremor runs through her. She blinks and her face resets to its usual confidence. She draws a comb through the satin sheen of her brown hair—back on script for the fourth installment of the Hair Diary campaign Lotus created for Avonna beauty products. Her movements are herky-jerky, almost spastic. Another tremor runs through her. She stares into the mirror, confused. Shot in super-definition, the bedroom lighting carefully designed to show off her curves (and of course her glistening hair), Avonna sets the dryer to maximum and places it directly against her abdomen. Her synthetic skin begins to melt, revealing the ductworks beneath. She tilts her head, smiling, her hair falling to the side. Oily smoke rises from the blackened place below her rib cage. “So smooth,” she says.

Pitch-perfect neo noir By Trois86 A slightly dystopic look at our consumer culture's impending future, where the manufactured personalities we use to pimp our products start having thoughts and hopes of their own Avonna has all the elements of great noir combined with a spec fiction tilt that makes it feel totally original. One of the best examples of neo-noir I've ever read, definitely pick up this story and read it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Robots, Obsessions, & More By Dave Wilde Decades ago Mr. Asimov bequeathed is the three laws of robotics. You can hear some echoes of that theory in this story, but there's nothing unoriginal about this terrific story. Expertly crafted and well worth reading. In many ways, it feels more like a pulp-era science fiction story than anything else.

BE SURE to pick this one up and give it a read, Nathan Beauchamp is sure to be a household name in the coming years. Nothing else I can say!

While Book 1 had a certain number of skeptics regarding the plot line--they were proved wrong with this offering. This author continues to improve with each new book and has a future in this genre. If you are a military science fiction fan, this offering does not disappoint. I will purchase the next book in the series.

By Greg Phillips I signed up to be notified when this was published and bought (and read!) it the same day (blew my plans all to hell too but hey.....).It's space opera but FUN space opera. The science (in my opinion) has some holes in it........ 'Streaming smoke' in space? In debris fields so think you SEE lasers, but don't degrade those lasers? Debris fields that never seem to hit/damage any ships 'flying' thru them? You get the idea.Other reviewers have pointed out the similarities to Battlestar Galactica.....not being a fan, I can't addressed that. The space battles are fun, and have enough excitement to keep you interested.Bottom line----- this isn't deathless prose. Will this be a classic 50 years from now? Hell no! (Sorry Mr. Webb). Is it worth the money I paid? Hell yeah. For what it is, it's worth reading.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Good, could've been better! By paulmuadeeb The first book was a quick read. The second was not so much. There were character development issues with the first book but they have to be overlooked because the author was developing the novel universe and characters. However the second book, instead of developing on the previous work, continued the same arc of original characters.XO Proctor: We don't know anything new about her even though she is supposed to be Captain Granger's right hand. All she does is follow orders and maybe play Devil advocate for him in some situations.Vice President Isaacson: He has to be the stupidest person to be ever elected to office. He believes everyone and is singularly driven.Captain Granger: He is not a very good tactician. He achieves victory by throwing cannon fodder at the enemy. And while the enemy is distracted killing thousands, he attacks them and destroys them. His only other tactic is to swing around the planet and attack the enemy. Also he seems to be a regular military person. He follows military chain of command and goes where he is told. Rebel, he is not. He does enjoy tense situations; demonstrated when he actually got into a discussion, with his bridge crew, about giving the ship a nick name in the middle of a very tense battle. The only character that really intrigued me was President Avery. She has layers to her personality that unfold as the story progresses. Despite all this the story is still good. I still look forward to next book because I am very invested in the storyline. I would not be critiquing it if I was not. I would like to find out happens to Captain Granger and humanity in general.

A $0.99 por tiempo limitado. ¡Aprovecha!

Review “From the ‘Horrible Monster, Black-As-Coal’ who devours ‘1 spider whole,’ to the ‘Nasty Goblin, Slimy-Sloppers’ who ingests ‘10 poor grasshoppers,’ creatively named creatures consume their favorite cuisine. Held vertically, this handsomely designed counting book presents bright and bold close-ups of monster faces. Large flaps drop down to mimic opening mouths, reveal the rest of each rhyming verse, and depict the appropriate number of just-gobbled goodies. Kids will eat this one up.” —School LibraryJournal

Agusto-Cox The bright, bold colors in these drawings and the short little rhymes are engaging and entertaining, and these characters are scary and funny at the same time. It’s a fun way to count to 10. At the end, there is even a recap of all the items eaten, so that young readers can recount these items. Minimal text and stunning photographs from around the world describe the remarkable, often dangerous journeys children make every day on their way to and from school. No simple school bus picks them up each day, but rather children travel through disaster zones, cross rapids, climb mountains, and maneuver on ziplines daily to get to the classroom. Some of them even carry their desks!

The Way to School, by Rosemary McCarney, Plan International

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—This compelling photo essay from McCarney, president and CEO of Plan International Canada, an international agency devoted to helping children in developing nations, presents the physical challenges of going to school. Spare text and beautiful images powerfully and accessibly demonstrate how environmental hazards, rough terrains, and poverty impede children from reaching their destination. Each picture speaks to the importance of education and the determination of kids around the world who are willing to risk their lives to attain it. Labeled with the name of the country where it was taken, each photograph emphasizes the stark contrast between the average American student and others around the world who traverse hazards and obstacles for the chance to get an education. VERDICT An excellent starting point to discuss diversity and culture in the primary grades.—Annette Herbert, F. E. Smith Elementary School, Cortland, NY

Review [The Way to School] is both a fascinating look at school around the world and a very subtle message to readers to appreciate what they have. (Kirkus Reviews 2015-06-26)Spare text and beautiful images powerfully and accessibly demonstrate how environmental hazards, rough terrains, and poverty impede children from reaching their destination....An excellent starting point to discuss diversity and culture in the primary grades. (School Library Journal 2015-09-01)Not only does this beautiful book deserve a place in every school library, but I’d recommend it for every home library as well — and encourage parents to share it with their school-age offspring. (Montreal Gazette 2015-08-26)For a children’s story with few words, it’s one of the most powerful books I have read in a while. (Inside Toronto 2015-08-26)This is a magnificent book for teachers to use in the classroom at the start of a new school year... this book belongs in every school library. (Children's Book Heal 2015-09-11)In this series of characterful, evocative photographs from around the world, McCarney illustrates the lengths and effort some kids put into their daily journeys. And the adventure and peril just makes clear what’s at the heart of their journeys — the determination and value they have for their own education. Inspiration, solidarity, even a little envy — a picture book to inspire all three. (Toronto Star 2015-09-12)Buoyant and beautiful, The Way to School is a deeply powerful illustration of the importance of education and the universal drive to learn. (Shelf Awareness 2015-09-15)Though its message is subtle, The Way to School celebrates schools and the importance of education and is well worthy of purchase. Highly Recommended. (CM: Canadian Review of Materials 2015-09-18)Although this book is accessible to young readers, it would also make a wonderful read aloud for a primary class at the beginning of the school year. (Canadian Teacher Magazine 2015-09-08)Striking color photographs illustrate this vivid reminder that everyday life challenges some young people much more than others, and that schooling is so valuable that it makes even the most difficult journeys worthwhile! Highly recommended, especially for public and early grade school library picturebook collections. (The Midwest Book Review 2016-01-25)While the United States is no stranger to Mother Nature’s fury, The Way to School sheds light on the obstacle course paths some students tackle when they leave home.... The one thing the students in this book all have in common is that they're happy to be at school, once they arrive. (The Charlotte Observer 2016-02-23)[The Way to School] is able to show that different communities have very distinct experiences when going to school and a number of them not too pleasant... Despite all these differences the book shows how much children love being in school. This is a book recommended for public libraries and children's rooms everywhere. (The Deakin Review of Children's Literature 2016-03-07)[The Way To School]’s captivating photography of the difficulty of these journeys could inspire students to appreciate and value their own education. (ETFO Voice 2016-03-18)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. How do you get to school? By Paul Mastin If your parents ever told you (or you have ever told your kids!) what a tough time you had getting to school, uphill both ways, ten miles in waist-deep snow, etc., even your exaggerations probably won't match up to the journeys to school taken by the children in The Way to School. Rosemary McCarney, who works for Plan International Canada, has gathered images from around the world showing children on their way to school. If these kids ever have kids, they will have stories to tell about getting to school. "We had to crawl across a damaged bridge, in danger of falling into a river." "I rode a water buffalo to school." "We climbed a high ladder to crawl over a cliff." "We climbed over mountain and went through a tunnel in the mountain." "We walked across a glacier on the way to school." "We had to carry our own desks to school." Or, "You're lucky to go to school. We were too poor for school." Or, "I couldn't go to school because our school was destroyed by an earthquake/typhoon/tsunami." You get the idea. The photographs are beautiful in the various settings. The joy the children share in going to school is evident. I love this kind of book, that makes the world seem bigger, by showing people from around the world, and smaller, by showing universal shared experiences. My kids' schools are very different from the schools or the ways to school in The Way to School. But I can see my kids and their classmates in the faces of these kids around the world. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

I gave both of them as a gift to my two favorite principals to put in their office library for those children who are what we teachers call "frequent flyers". It's a great book for children to see how other children around the world get to school in spite of the obstacles put in their way. It really shows the importance of going to school.
