What I liked best is that the author stuck with a few main characters who survived the initial disasters. This made the story line easy to follow and gave the characters some human depth. It also helped with the narration of the disasters themselves insofar as their geographic locations. As a native Californian, I'm familiar with the state, but between multiple strong earthquakes all over such a huge area it was helpful knowing this character resides near Hoover Dam, and this character lives up in the Hollywood Hills as these things were happening.I'm always interested in a good disaster movie or book, so that's why this one peeked my interest. It wasn't overly technical with scientific facts, but had enough to support a credible scenario. While unlikely, it's not out of the realm of possibility that such a disaster could happen.Overall, I give it 4 starts. The ending of the second sequel was a bit too far-fetched and abrupt, leaving me thinking, "Is that it?" I prefer endings that are more natural and well thought out.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I give this a five star because the author is very good at giving us a well told story with great characters. By Dave Avis I give this a five star because the author is very good at giving us a well told story with great characters. It was just too little of a good thing. The book ends abruptly . There is no closure. It's like having sex and when you're almost there, your child starts screaming or the telephone rings!I really liked the first book and this second book and I highly recommend both books to everyone.I do hope the author is working on another one, but longer.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining and believable. By JHWJR This sequel to "California Archipelago" features non-stop action as it brought me up to date on the lives of the survivors four years after the original disaster. Their struggles to restore their previous life styles are realistic and I found myself cheering for them and mourning for those who later lost their lives. The way the disasters are connected geographically makes me believe that Mr. McGraw did considerable research on the possible effects of earthquakes in the area. I find the novel believable, scary and entertaining.

Christina 5 Of 5 Stars...A Perfect Fit For Fans Of James Patterson Or Michael Crichton.

This novel focuses on a brilliant female doctor who has started to unlock the secrets of the human genome. Add in the secret government conspiracy somehow involving the brilliant minds humanity has produced, and the stealing of secrets from the military, you have a great mystery.

While I love Vicki and Parks, I have to mention the supporting character of Biggins who is a hot contrast! Biggins is full of confident bristle, a larger-than-life powerhouse that steals every scene. The dialogue between her and Parks is entertaining, a brother-sister attitude of verbally sparing at one another, and had me laughing. Fair warning to the author: if Biggins does not survive this series, I will be heartbroken! Overall, a thrilling conspiracy novel - held my interest to the final page and left me wanting more!

Amazon 5 Stars by Isabel

Wow! New Science Fiction Thriller Classic with twists. I could not put it down; I was glued to every page because of the surprises and twists and turns in every chapter, which becomes an out of control runaway train in the last half of the book. Is this what evil doers out of control in the government fight so hard to hide, to keep secret? I had to keep reading to find out what happens next, and it did not disappoint me. I was surprised all the way through the end.

Amazon 5 Stars

I found it difficult to put the book down especially as the danger escalated for Vicki and her fiancé, Nick Parks. For a science fiction mystery, CODE X is a fast paced thriller!

It is a fantastic combination of science fiction, drama, and thriller. Code X Discovery really makes you question current events as well. Such as what secrets is the government hiding from us. But back to the book! Michael Vallone does a great job setting the scene. I was both engaged and hanging off the edge of my seat within the first few pages. Follow Vicki who is the youngest dr to receive a Nobel prize and her fiancé Parks on an adventure to uncovering many truths meanwhile putting their lives in danger. You really feel connected to the characters and find yourselves rooting for their success. Must read!

2015 Reprint of the 1947 edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. First published in 1947, this acknowledged classic of American literary criticism explores the influences - especially Shakespearean ones - on Melville's writing of Moby-Dick. One of the first Melvilleans to advance what has since become known as the "theory of the two Moby-Dicks," Olson argues that there were two versions of Moby-Dick, and that Melville's reading King Lear for the first time in between the first and second versions of the book had a profound impact on his conception of the saga: "the first book did not contain Ahab," writes Olson, and "it may not, except incidentally, have contained Moby-Dick." If literary critics and reviewers at the time responded with varying degrees of skepticism to the "theory of the two Moby-Dicks," it was the experimental style and organization of the book that generated the most controversy.

Call Me Ishmael, by Charles Olson

Review

Not only important, but apocalyptic.

(New York Herald Tribune)

One of the most stimulating essays ever written on Moby Dick, and for that matter on any piece of literature, and the forces behind it.

(San Francisco Chronicle)

Olson has been a tireless student of Melville and every Melville lover owes him a debt for his Scotland Yard pertinacity in getting on the trail of Melville's dispersed library.

(Lewis Mumford New York Times)

About the Author A seminal figure in post-World War II literature, Charles Olson (1910-1970) has helped define the postmodern sensibility. His work is marked by an almost limitless range of interest and extraordinary depth of feeling. Olson's themes are among the largest conceivable: empowering love, political responsibility, historical discovery and cultural reckoning, the wisdom of dreams and the transformation of consciousness all carried in a voice both intimate and grand, American and timeless, impassioned and cooly demanding. His books include The Collected Poems of Charles Olson (University of California Press, 1997), The Maximus Poems (University of California Press, 1983), and The Collected Prose (University of California Press, 1997).

37 of 41 people found the following review helpful. You will seek the White Whale as Ahab did. By A Customer In brief, "Call Me Ishmael" is the most interesting piece of literary criticism I've ever read. Foreshadowing his future leanings as a poet, Olson writes "Ishmael" more like a prose poem than stodgy dissertation. Yet, however unique the form, it seems strangely predetermined. For it is only through a poetic nature that it could distill such huge, multilayered concepts into an accessible and short (119 pg.) essay. This reissue--it was first published in 1947--takes the reader through Shakespearean influence on "Moby Dick," Melville's struggle with faith, and the importance of place--to name only three examples. The future rector of the short-lived, yet highly influential, Black Mountain College in North Carolina, creates an energy out of words bested only by "The Whale" itself. As Olson stated to his colleague, Merton Sealts, Jr., who wrote the new afterword to the essay: "I see that The White Death has descended upon You too." And it will upon you as well. After reading this incisive, lyrical, and engaging piece, you will want to return to "Moby Dick" before you've closed its pages.

16 of 19 people found the following review helpful. More Melville research than Moby-Dick criticism By Wilf Gehlen Charles Olson selected a snappy title for his book, but his elliptical writing style and the few interesting nuggets of knowledge that he offers up preclude a more enthusiastic recommendation. Another critic of Melville writes that, in Call Me Ishmael, Olson "rather enigmatically" relates Moby-Dick to the Osiris myth of ancient Egypt (one of the nuggets). Those who find this book more "lyrical" than elliptical and enigmatic, should read the section on Moby-Dick in Studies in Classic American Literature (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of D. H. Lawrence). It, too, avoids the style of "stodgy dissertation," but is better written and predates Olson's work by 2 decades. Olson offers evidence from Melville's letters and writings that he initially wrote a more pedestrian whaling book for the mass market, then, inspired by Hawthorne and Shakespeare, transformed it over the course of a year into the poetic epic that we read today. Jean-Paul Sartre suspected this multi-stage development as he reviewed the French translation of Moby-Dick, and this supporting information is important to those interested in the author as well as the work. I found Olson's explanation of the Bulkington character most interesting, as his brief, but pointed, introduction and immediate fade to nothingness in Moby-Dick is itself enigmatic. After reading Call Me Ishmael you may want to move on to the compendium of criticism, Twentieth Century Interpretations of Moby-Dick: A Collection of Critical Essays (A Spectrum Book) (M.T.Gilmore, ed.). Gilmore includes the chapter "Captain Ahab and His Fool" from Call Me Ishmael (another nugget relating Ahab and Pip to Lear) but offers as well a wide range of other criticism, touching romantic symbolism, 19th century American technological sociology, biblical metaphor, and more.

17 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Literary criticism becomes art By A Customer It should come as no surprise that the world's greatest novel would inspire the world's greatest essay of literary criticism. Sadly, Olson's ideas did not appeal to members of the elite Melville Society, and to this day they still consider him a "crank." A real pity, because Olson will be remembered long after they are forgotten.

On one terrible night in August 1895, the world changed for ever. Southern England became the landing site of a group of mysterious grey cylinders that came hurtling down from the stars. Nobody could have guessed that these strange objects would herald the most desperate and important conflict in the history of mankind. The war pitted man against machines from space and no quarter was asked for or given on either side. The outcome would be decided by the smallest of things...This is the essential guide to the Anglo-Martian conflict of 1895, offering unique comparison of the two belligerents, English and alien. It looks at the forces available to each and evaluates their respective tactics and strategies. Finally, it tells the full story of those fateful fifteen days, punctuated by the best and worst possible human experiences. It is a story of hope and despair, courage and terror, victory and defeat.

It was a nice surprise to open the package and see this cyclopean tripod glaring back at me.This is part of Osprey's 'Adventure' imprint, an expanding line-up of reference books for fictional and mythological struggles, ranging from Atlantis to King Arthur to the Cthulhu Mythos. I have read quite a few of them, including an excellent book on the Nazi occult program, a tome on the Knights Templar I found very helpful in my world building, and a great picture book on Steampunk military units. This one, as you can see, focuses on The War of the Worlds. In this book, the war is every bit as circumscribed in time and geography as H.G. Wells’ account in the original novel, leading to its alternate name as the Anglo-Martian War of 1895. (The date of the invasion in the book was 1900. I don’t know why they moved it back five years.) This fictionalized reference cleaves very close to the original narrative as well, adding only a handful of embellishments and fleshing out a couple of the encounters that the narrator of the novel heard about second-hand. This added material is very welcome, and the book suffers for want of more. But I’ll get into that later.Like the non-fiction Osprey references, the book begins with a brief overview of the setting on the eve of battle and then proceeds into an analysis of the organization, manpower (or martianpower), weaponry, and disposition of the belligerents. The assessment of the British army and Royal Navy were accurate enough to my eye, and not fictionalized in any substantial way. The Martians were taken directly from the book: there is some speculation on their motivations, a slightly more detailed analysis of their weaponry (including a novel idea about the nature of the Black Smoke), and a somewhat lengthy but highly intriguing disquisition on their physiology and physiognomy, but otherwise the author did not try to add much to the mythos. Anyone hoping for a revisionist account that redressed the tactical inflexibility of the Martian weaponry, their limited number of assault platforms, or their obvious oversight of aerial and naval resources will be disappointed. The Martians still only have the fighting machine (tripod), the handling machine, the heat ray, and the black smoke. Even the Flying Machine is taken away from them, dismissed as a bit of panicked rumor, unsupported by any wreckage found after the war. The Martians, who are credited with launching ballistic projectiles via gigantic cannons running the length of Olympus Mons and landing them with a precision of a few hundred meters over a distance of millions of miles, are deemed incapable of mastering flight because of the thin atmosphere of their homeworld. Hmmm. No mention is made of Cavorite or the Selenites-as-food-stock, though their inclusion seemed like a no-brainer to me.The battles of the Anglo-Martian War are every bit as one-sided as in the novel, albeit with a sprinkling of minor (and irrelevant) victories thrown in for variety. Maxim’s pom-pom guns prove useful in an isolated instance, sappers manage to blow up a cylinder with hand-planted charges before it unscrews, and artillery secreted within abandoned homes bloody the Martian’s noses—uh, food openings—but these prove to be minor nuisances to the Martian juggernaut. Besides the heroic sacrifice of Thunder Child, the Royal Navy comes into play only once, with a grounded battleship laying waste to much of London in a futile attempt to box in the advancing tripods. Nothing can stop the Martians, until they suddenly die en masse from exposure to common germs. This is one of the great deus ex machina of literature and it is not averted in Osprey’s retelling. Some attempt is made to rationalize why the Martians, who arrived at different times and therefore should have had different periods of disease incubation, seemed to have all died within a few days of each other. However, no attempt is made to rationalize why they were completely unprepared for such contamination. At this point, I should confess that I am a novelist that has written a good deal of fiction based on the War of the Worlds and its aftermath and so have thought about these sorts of questions at great length. Ultimately, these thoughts led me to depart in some significant ways from the original novel. I had hoped that Osprey would take some more liberties with the source material and address, for instance, the serious military limitations of having only gaseous and line-of-sight directed energy weapons, with no indirect fire capability; or how the thicker, much more humid terran atmosphere would degrade the performance of the Martian beam weapons. I expected them to enlarge the war to more than just the Home Counties of England and give us a glimpse at how the French, the Germans, the Americans, and the Japanese battled the invaders. I hoped that the ‘death-by-germ’ angle would be downplayed in favor of a longer, more global war that showed humans of the period taking advantage of the Martian maladaptation to the Earth’s environment, especially as the aliens drove toward the sweltering tropics. I wanted to learn how these creatures from a dry, low-gravity world intended to conquer a planetary surface that was 70% water, with a pull-of-gravity three times greater than Mars. Most of all, I wanted the War of the Worlds to mean something to world history. Alas, the text makes it clear that history unfolded almost exactly as it did in our own world, with both World Wars happening right on schedule and the Cold War following along close behind, all with the same outcomes. No advances of any significance were obtained from studying the Martian technology or biology; conveniently, almost no biological trace of the Martians, their food-stock, or the red weed was left to study. The status quo goes marching on!I don’t understand why, if you are going to go so far as to write a pseudo-history of a science fiction novel, you would work so hard to make it fit into our real-life history. Not only does it undermine the suspension of disbelief, it makes the whole exercise irrelevant. If nothing changed, then the Martian invasion might as well never have happened, and we might as well not talk about it.All that may seem a bit nit-picky, but it did dampen my enjoyment of the book. The casual reader who has not thought a great deal about the War of the Worlds or, if it were real, its inevitable repercussions, will probably not even notice these shortcomings. Then again, that sort of person would probably not be very interested in buying this book. But unrealistically lofty expectations aside, I did enjoy the book enough to read it cover to cover in a few hours. The writing is concise and engaging and it is filled with beautiful artwork (this is almost universally true of Osprey books). It also included a bunch of easter eggs for the joy of the attentive reader, including appearances by the Triffids, Moriarty, Sebastian Moran, Adam Adamant, and Fu Manchu. Professor Challenger also appears, though he gets short-shrift, referred to only as the student of real-life boffin William Rutherford, and is not even accorded the title of professor. (No wonder G.E.C. hated journalists!) If you eat this kind of stuff up like I do, you’ll really enjoy it.Overall, I’m glad I bought it, even if I can’t shake a sense of disappointment over what it could have been. If you are a fan of both the War of the Worlds and military history, it’s worth the ~$13.

By Joe Crowe This one is an illustrated novel that depicts the “War of the Worlds” story as if it was written by a war correspondent. It’s placed in the context of real British happenings from that time, with new perspectives and events happening all around the events of the original story. This is all a good thing. It’s a new look at a classic, complete with fancy new art that puts the reader right in the middle. Read the original first or listen to the Orson Welles radio version. You’ll have a frame of reference. But really, even if you come into this story cold, a steampunk-era story about Martians invading is pretty easy (and awesome) to get into.

Ebook PDF Lila The Werewolf and Other Tales, by Peter S. Beagle

16 old and new classics by acclaimed fantasy icon Peter S. Beagle, 10 of which are collected for the first time. The reprints in this book were originally gathered together in Beagle’s 1997 fiction/nonfiction set, THE RHINOCEROS WHO QUOTED NIETZSCHE. That book is never going to be reissued in any format, so the stories were given a new home here. They include the title piece, which very nearly invented the entire subgenre of urban fantasy; “Professor Gottesman and the Indian Rhinoceros” (Beagle’s personal favorite among all his short fiction); the exquisite “Come Lady Death,” which inspired Neil Gaiman to make Death a young woman in his SANDMAN comic series; and the deceptively simple, heartbreaking/heartwarming truth of “My Daughter’s Name is Sarah.” The 10 new pieces are all from 2009 through 2012, part of Beagle’s astonishing 21st century outpouring of short fiction, during which he has written five times as many stories in just 10 years as he wrote in the previous 40. More amazing still is the diversity of the work, even for an artist long-recognized as hating to repeat himself. In “Music, When Soft Voices Die” Beagle moves beyond the surface trappings of steampunk to reach the dark heart of the world; in “Trinity County, CA” he offers an alternate modern-day California where illegal backwoods meth labs use dragons as fiery watch dogs; and in “Underbridge” he reveals the horrific truth behind a popular Seattle tourist attraction. The seven other new tales in this set are equally wide-ranging, leaping from 17th-century Maine to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Africa and Barsoom. There’s never any guessing where a Beagle story will start, or where it will go—but adventurous readers can be assured they are in the hands of a master. Tarzan and the Virginian [aka The Ape-Man of Mars] Great-Grandmother in the Cellar (an Innkeeper’s World story) The Queen Who Could Not Walk —Peter S. Beagle was born in 1939 and raised in the Bronx, just a few blocks from Woodlawn Cemetery, the inspiration for his first novel, A FINE AND PRIVATE PLACE. Today, thanks to classic works such as THE LAST UNICORN, TAMSIN, and THE INNKEEPER'S SONG, he is acknowledged as America's greatest living fantasy author; and his dazzling abilities with language, characters, and magical storytelling have earned him many millions of fans around the world. In addition to stories and novels Beagle has written numerous teleplays and screenplays, including the animated versions of THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE LAST UNICORN, plus the fan-favorite “Sarek” episode of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. His nonfiction book I SEE BY MY OUTFIT, which recounts a 1963 journey across America on motor scooter, is considered a classic of American travel writing; and he is also a gifted poet, lyricist, and singer-songwriter. He has won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and Mythopoeic Awards, along with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Association, and also France's prestigious Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire.

Arndt Six older stories and ten new ones--all great! My personal favorites would include Beagle's classic early tale Come Lady Death, Professor Gottesman and the Rhinoceroes; the somewhat loopy Trinity, CA, the two Avram Davidson tribute stories, Kaskia, Great-Grandmother in the Cellar and the concluding high fantasy tale, The Queen Who Could Not Walk. All of these stories, however, are worth reading and treasuring. There's not a bad one in the bunch. I hope someday to have a print volume of this excellent collection but, for now, I'm just happy this great collection of stories exists! This would be a great gift for holiday kindle purchases and kindle readers everywhere!

For Miriam it was the right thing to do and she trusted him. For Norrie it was his only way to escape death. The circumstances were complicated, perhaps his trial was unfair and he insisted that he was not guilty. She was his only hope and she cleverly arranged for his transition to life in South America. He did not forget what she had done for him and after many years they met again but under very different circumstances. Her love was sure from the beginning and he didn't see it, his developed after circumstances again required her interception. Sometimes we often overlook the real quality of those who we take for granted. Basil King weaves a great story of sacrificial love.

Excellent Read By Amazon Customer As a business lawyer for the past 18 years practicing in three different states, I highly recommend this book not only to my clients but also to anyone in business looking to increase productivity. It is one of the most well written books dealing with business productivity that I have ever read. While written on a topic that can be highly technical, Mr. Duryea has a writing style that will make sense to anyone who reads this book. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who wants to increase his or her business net worth and foster a positive business culture while doing so. The business community finally has a common-sense, illustrative guide to increase productivity at a value price.

Stories that belong right along with some of the classic Uncle Scrooge stories By Wayne A McCoy 'Uncle Scrooge: Pure Viewing Satisfaction' is a really fun collection of Uncle Scrooge stories, and this collection is perfect for all readers. As usual, Uncle Scrooge is trying to hang on to his money and keep it from the likes of the nasty Beagle Boys. When the Beagle Boys come up with a giant Beagle Boy robot, not even Scrooge's vaults are safe. Scrooge wants to foil this plot, but he'll need the help of his nephew Donald and Huey, Dewey and Louie. In another story, Scrooge's favorite (only?) outfit is in need of repair and something interesting is found inside that leads to the kind of classic Uncle Scrooge I remember reading about as a kid. There are other stories and short gags, and I had a great time reading this book. I've always loved the classic Uncle Scrooge stories, and this feels like it fits right in with those, and it'd be a perfect way to introduce characters to these characters. Very well done.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

My favorite was when he would go swimming in his vault every evening before bed.I decided to give this book a go and see how it was changed in 15 years. I had no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The stories were just how I remembered them and the illustrations were top-notch! I will be checking out more in this series.*** I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. ***

I would head down to my Grandfather's Drug Store and borrow a couple of comics for the weekend at their house. This brought back a lot of memories. The book contained 5 stories and they were pure Uncle Scrooge. The comics were well drawn and looked just like they did in the 1960s. The stories were well written and kids will love this. The characters were just as I had remembered them, especially the nephews.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

When i traveled to New Orleans, this book was the biggest help, especially when you consider that i was a college student traveling on a budget. But not only was i able to shop, and buy the silly souvenirs, but i was able to traverse the Quarter like a local.

Pretty good guidebook By margoelmer I prefer the old Lonely Planet books which were chock-full of material and did not bother with colored pictures, but we successfully used this book for a long weekend in New Orleans in March (recommended month, by the way, great weather, not too hot). We used the recommendations for restaurants quite a lot and the maps were helpful. The WWII museum was extremely good. It's a short Uber ride or long walk from the French Quarter but you could spend all day there. I never studied that war in school and learned a lot. Full of interesting videos from the time.

By Hooked Me Big disappointment...stuck with the series and absolutely loved the first and second book...unfortunately the series just fizzled out. I waited so long for the final boil ignore series and when I read it I was left with the "that's it?" feeling. The series started out smart, funny, witty, engaging...but did not end that way.

When everything you’ve longed for is standing right in front of you, would you find the courage to chase it when you’ve given up on dreams? Fox shifter Alison Smith gave up on happy endings when her ex-husband walked out, but that didn’t mean she was allowed to give up on happy. With four growing kids, Allie is determined to look on the bright side and carry on, even when life seems to keep kicking the girl who’s fallen down. Four kids, two jobs, and a pile of debt left over from her ex seem overwhelming most days. Luckily, Allie has the best friends a girl could ask for. Especially a certain quiet bear who’s always been her rock. Patient. Oliver Campbell knows what it means to be patient. But twenty years of wanting one unavailable woman may have pushed him to the edge. With Allie working every night at his bar, their friendship has begun to fracture. Then old ghosts offer one more kick to the little family that’s already down, and patience is a virtue Ollie can no longer afford. Allie’s ex-husband may be gone, but his actions are haunting his family. With danger licking the borders of Cambio Springs, the bear and the fox will have to work together. And twenty years of unspoken truths may finally come to light. WAKING HEARTS is the third paranormal romance novel in the Cambio Springs Mysteries series.

Meeks I have been trying to put on my "professional reviewer" hat more in 2015 and not give away as many 4 and 5 Star reviews as I have in the past. I am an easy reviewer, give me a good story and I can forgive almost anything but give me a good story and then make it into a great story and we end up with Waking Hearts in this case.Needless to say this is going to be one of those 5 Star reviews that is honestly earned BUT in my opinion you cannot really enjoy this at the 5 Star level without reading the preceding books. You can skip the novellas if you wish (not my choice but will not damage the continuity) but I DO HIGHLY RECOMMEND you read the short story that precedes this series called Long Ride Home: A Cambio Springs Short Story, 99 cents and 41 pages long and my example to authors of how you really can pack a ton of emotion into a few pages if you have talent.OK, now that I have wasted 2 paragraphs without really talking much about Waking Hearts much let us move along, this is a story that has been in the background of this series since book 1 and everybody in town knew that Allie and Ollie (wonder if Elizabeth Hunter realized how these shortened nicknames were gonna sound) were meant for each other .... except for the two people involved (love is blind takes on a whole new meaning). The bumbling, stumbling love story with a MUCH darker background plot interspersed with about the perfect amount of humor just never allows you to get bored. There is always either the 2 main characters stumbling over each other, or some bit of action, or Ollie working his way into the hearts of the reader and Allie by just being himself.Things have a way of working themselves out in these books but after the plots for this book were taken care of we are left with a alluring hook (albeit somewhat dark) for the next book and a romantic couple that has a lot of humorous possibilities :)Bottom Line: 5 Stars, great story, warm, funny, suspenseful, and just plain entertaining. Highly recommended.

Friends to lovers at long last and Family and friends add extra heart By melindeeloo I wish I could articulate just how much I enjoyed Waking Hearts, because I love this series, and Waking Hearts was the best story yet.Allie's husband, Joe, is finally out of the picture, but he's left his family in dire straights and Allie is struggling, and things are only going to get worse. Fortunately, Ollie has her back and he's there for her and her kids when more of Joe's troubles end up on their doorstep.I just loved the leads: Fox shifter mother of four Allie's - whose life has been rough for a while, but who has managed to retain her optomistic nature - and bear shifter Ollie - who has secretly loved Allie forever. I liked how everyone prods Ollie to pursue what he's always wanted with Allie even though the timing isn't perfect. II especially loved Ollie with Allie and with her kids - he really is my dream hero - protective and supportive and so head over heals for his heroine. As always, the supporting cast and all the wonderful family and friend connections bring Cambio Springs to life. And I was happy that Hunter pulled some new threads to carry the series forward beyond the initial friend group - the next pairing looks to be very entertaining.

I'm a huge fan of Elizabeth Hunter's Irin Chronicles and knew I couldn't go wrong with any book written by her, so I said Yes and then immediately purchased the previous short stories & books in the Cambio Springs series . . . and binge read my way through them. What an awesome and unique PNR series! I was hooked right away with the intriguing and touching short story, Long Ride Home, and fell in love with the special characters and desert town in Shifting Dreams. Now, after catching up in the series and finishing Waking Hearts, I am left eagerly anticipating the release of the next book.Waking Hearts is the story of Allie Smith, a 34-year-old fox shifter with 4 kids, 2 jobs, and a mountain of debt left by her husband who walked out on her one night as she was serving her special meatloaf dinner, and Ollie Campbell, a grizzly bear shifter who has loved Allie from afar for 20 years but missed his chance to claim her because he waited too long to speak up. With her husband out of the picture (much more to that story), the sexual chemistry ignites, fueled by Ollie & Allie living and fighting side by side and by the coming full moon which sends a shifter's libido raging out of control. Allie is afraid to risk their friendship on a relationship that might end with another man walking away from her. Ollie worries about stepping over a line as he assumes the role of family protector and cares for Allie & her children.Normally, a very patient, kind, quiet grizzly, Ollie is now edgy, grumpy, out of patience, and out of time. The bearded giant of a man/bear with his tattoos & gorgeous hard body has become very possessive, protective, and proprietary over Allie & her family. When ghosts from her husband's past bring predators to her door, Ollie roars in and shows just how badass an enraged grizzly bear can be. It's now or never. This powerful, potent, prime bear is ready to make his move.Allie is a proud, spunky, and surprisingly strong-willed woman/fox who is tired of depending on others. It takes everything she has left in her to feed, clothe, and care for her children and keep a roof over their heads. She knows what it feels like to be left holding the bag (or meatloaf!) and resolves to never put her heart or the hearts of her children on the line again. Even so, Allie struggles to fight her attraction to a certain gorgeous bear, thinking herself ridiculous in entertaining the thought that Ollie would give her a second glance. She's seen the women he's attracted to and knows she doesn't fit the bill. But when danger threatens Allie & her kids, Ollie steps up in a big way. Will Allie find the courage to take a chance with this magnificent creature and claim him as her own?The suspense ramps up as a deadly danger comes crawling into Cambio Springs. Ollie, Allie, and their shifter friends and family clans must unite to fight off a dominant enemy with powers that equal or exceed their own. The mystery of who/what/when builds anticipation and anxiety as this story plays out. Someone knows their secrets, someone can get through their defenses, someone can destroy the town and everyone in it. The extent and depth of this plot line blew me away as this story builds layer upon layer all the way to the explosive, blockbuster climax.Waking Hearts is an intriguing, suspenseful, beautiful read. Hunter's special way of writing love scenes, while certainly hot & erotic, honors the once in a lifetime kind of love. I like that we get to experience these two characters getting to know each other as more than friends, dancing back and forth, exploring deeper feelings. The slow burn makes the rewards so much sweeter in the end! While Waking Hearts is certainly different than other books/series I've read by Hunter, it's every bit as captivating, enthralling, and bewitching in its own unique way. I was swept away by the intensity of both the character relationships and the plot line. Beautifully written, Waking Hearts is a Page Burner! A Must Read! One for my Favorites Shelf!*Many thanks to the author for an ARC of Waking Hearts. It was my pleasure to read & review it.Full review at: http://crossmyheartbookreviews.blogspot.com/
