This companion to This Orq. (He Cave Boy.) pits Orq and Woma against a couple of stone-age bullies. Dorq is big, strong, and mean . . . and his pet, Caba, is even worse. But when Caba smashes a giant egg on Woma, Orq is so incensed he bangs two rocks together over and over, creating a spark. Like all good scientists, Orq recognizes an important discovery when he sees it. As he raises a flaming torch triumphantly, Dorq and Caba flee. Small Orq is the inventor of fire—and is a hero to his beloved Woma. An ode to the power of standing up for oneself, this book is the perfect antidote for any child who has ever felt small.

This Orq. (He say "UGH!"), by David Elliott

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—This second installment about Orq is rich in humor. The young caveboy and his trusty mammoth Woma have fun every day, despite the hardships of cave life. Perhaps their biggest challenge of all is dealing with bullies Dorq and Caba. Dorq is everything Orq is not—big, hairy, and strong. He's also greedy and mean. Orq and Woma are fast, but not always fast enough to escape their tormentors. One day, in anger and frustration, Orq pretends: "This rock Dorq. This rock Caba." As he bangs them together repeatedly, he accidentally creates fire in the process. He has the last laugh and wins the day. "Orq everybody's hero. Warm cave. Night light. Bison burgers! Yum!" VERDICT Recommended for all collections, especially libraries where This Orq: (He Cave Boy) (2014) has a particular fan base.—Ashley Prior, Lincoln Public Library, RI

Review "Even in prehistoric times, a pet is a boy's best friend and a bully, his worst enemy...There's abundant drollery in both Elliott's terse text and Nichols' mischievous pictures…Wacky and well-tuned to the preschool sense of humor." —Kirkus Reviews"Elliott’s halting cave-speak and Nichols’s expressive cartooning make for some very funny scenes..." —Publishers Weekly"[R]ich in humor....(r)ecommended for all collections." —School Library Journal"(F)un …Nichols’ affectionate cartoon drawings, with dynamic compositions and expressive faces, add to the humor and heart." —Booklist

(he says "ugh!") is a well-written story that addresses a common problem. Orq is frustrated with the meanness of Dorq, but he doesn't become angry until the bullies pick on his friend Woma. The book prompts discussion about treating others with kindness rather than meanness. Lori Nichols delightful drawings are spot on and add great fun to the story. I especially like the turtle fort and the turtle challenge. I read it to my five-year-old grandson. He enjoyed the story and pictures and liked how Orq was able to scare off the bullies.I received this book in exchange for a fair review.

Enjoyable Paranormal Mystery By Mainer Aria Andrews comes to Newfoundland for the funeral of her twin sister, Sonata, whom she has not seen in seven years. Sonata has been brutally murdered and Aria must find the murderer with the help of her brother, Finn, and the policeman in charge, Bennet Halfknight. All three of the Andrews siblings had magical powers: Aria has command over earth, Finn over fire, and Sonata had command over the air.Finn's new girlfriend is a witch and she and Aria become friends. Sophie also helps in this paranormal murder mystery where there are werewolves and other creatures.Crestfall is an engaging story and brings a fresh perspective to paranormal worlds that is still within credibility. I especially liked the origin story for the werewolves. The descriptions of Newfoundland were right on and perfect for the story. I enjoyed this book and I think that any lover of paranormal tales would like it too.

Heading home for her twin sisters funeral and is regretting the decision. Its been seven years since she left home and left her family behind. An accident that almost killed her, Aria has been happy since leaving. Now coming home and finding out not only was her twin murdered but the way it happened. Aria can not leave until she knows who is behind it all.Crestfall is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are a little light and the story at times jumps and drags, but all in all a fun read. The author came up with a great mystery that I didn't figure out until almost the very end. This is a five fangs book from me!Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock!

Unlocking Worlds: A Reading Companion for Book Lovers, by Sally Allen

Review "There are many books available that exist to give impressions of other books [...]. The question with such books is, do they validate the time spent reading them, or would one be better served to simply read one of the other books on his or her to-read list? As a distillation of many years of reading, Unlocking Worlds provides valuable knowledge to anyone looking beyond the next Amazon recommendation for ideas. More importantly, even if one never follows up with any of Allen's recommendations, reading Unlocking Worlds is an enjoyable experience all by itself." - Foreword Clarion Reviews"This lovely little book is inspiring me to reclaim the obsessive, escapist, reading/dreaming part of my personality." - Johnna Kaplan, The Size of Connecticut

By Dhivya Balaji / Readers Muse FIRST IMPRESSION:When I got the paperback in my hands, from the first sight, I was impressed by this book. The cover was clean, colorful and the title very apt. 'Unlocking Worlds' (and the author has given a beautiful explanation for it in her interview for us) is a book that will unlock many worlds for every reader. The printing and illustrations are excellent, even for the ARC I was provided with. The overall chapter placement was brilliant too.REVIEW:'Unlocking Worlds' is a book I would have to keep at the top of my bookshelf, always visible, always just in my reach. It is , in simple words, a reading companion. But I do not think it is limited to Book Lovers alone. It has the potential to make even those who don't prefer books take up and read them. The author, Sally Allen, has been a bookworm since her childhood (and she does tell us about this in a very well worded introduction) and uses her long years of experience with books to compile a very organised and neat book about books.Books are, in my opinion, portals to exciting worlds of adventure and information. Any book lover will not feel bored or alone in any circumstance if they have a book in hand to read. Sally Allen has so generously given us a few worthy lists of books she has enjoyed over the years, and with them she has done every book lover a favor. All those who love books and are mostly found in the very unexpected of places with a book in hand, will relate to, and appreciate the words the author has shared with us.A peek into a book lover's shelf would always be exciting, and the simple joy in finding about more books that maybe made an impression on someone else who appreciates it is a pleasure. Which is why this book is a treasure trove. It is a distilled version of the bookshelf of a bookworm, where she has carefully handpicked the books that she loved and those that made an impact on her. You may find books that you already know about, books that you never even knew existed, and those under appreciated books that you might have loved and not found anyone to discuss it with. The contents are organised, with clear genre specifications (a feat unto itself, because it has never been easy to classify books under particular genres) and has a simple but alluring synopsis about what to expect from each book, not the one that is given in the respective covers, but one that comes from the author's personal experiences with the book. The language, not surprisingly, is great and the style in which the overall contents are presented is also clear and detailed. The book taught me, in addition to other things, how exactly a review should be. It must give enough information to entice the reader, while not revealing any spoilers, and still manage to bring out the best and worst of the books.Unlocking Worlds is a great reading companion - an index for good books and a book that would be consulted often to know about more amazing books.WHAT I LIKED:The title, cover page and the conceptThe illustrations, both on the cover page and inside the book. They add variety to the content, and make it much more interestingThe organisation of the book, in different genres. It looks clean and can be referred to at convenience and not necessarily in a linear orderWHAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER:There is not a thing I would change about this book - except maybe add more of it!VERDICT:A must have for every book lover. And even if you are not, this would very well make you one! A must have either way.RATING: 5/5

I was delighted that one of my favorite series, All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor, was included as one of the selections.I especially loved what the author said about revisiting childhood books: "Returning to these childhood worlds as adults can remind us of the lessons we learned and parts of ourselves we may have long forgotten." Yes! As a great fan of rereading classic children's books, I was especially delighted to read this chapter, in praise of children's literature for adults.Unlocking Worlds: A Reading Companion for Book Lovers is beautifully written by an author who clearly really loves books. This is a celebration of the joys of reading. It is sure to delight readers, and I think it would also be a fine, helpful reference for any book discussion group leader.

By #redhead.with.book What a wonderful reading companion! This  book should be on every reader's library with an update every few years (I hope I'm not getting Sally all stressed out about this... :D )  The one thing I didn't like was the cover.  The contents of this book deserve a much more formal, attractive cover.  I read the ebook in PDF and found myself wanting write on the pages because there were so many wonderful quotes and books to read.  I found myself flying back and forth onto the Goodreads website to select new books "to read" and as a result, I will need a new library shelf just for the works I learned about from this guide. There are two ways to approach this book; technical or emotional.  I choose the emotional approach because of the huge impact it had on my reading.Sally, an obvious lover of books describes her own addiction.  Here is a quote about her: "When deep into a great book a need possesses me to carry it with me wherever I go, never to let it stray too far from my thoughts or person.  Also, I was at a particularly compelling point in the narrative.  What if an asteroid hit the parking lot just exactly where I had parked my car?  It's best not to take any chances."  (my feeling exactly)Sally nicely explains why reading is so important to her. "One of my preoccupations is improving my ability to communicate, and to do so requires understanding language's infinite potential.  I appreciate authors who show me that potential".One of my favorite quotes from the book is a quote from Pnin  by Vladimir Nabokov on page 126: "With the help of the janitor he screwed onto the side of the desk a pencil sharpener - that highly satisfying, highly philosophical implement that goes Ticonderoga-ticon-deroga, feeding on the yellow finish and sweet wood, and ends up in a kind of soundlessly spinning ethereal void as we all must".  (....swooning)I had already read several of the books Sally chose to include in her guide and was curious to read her take on them and one of them had me looking for a dictionary because I never thought to look up the meaning of a certain word in one of their titles (look up Penumbra). She ends her book by explaining that, it really is impossible to read every book that comes out and that it is ok just to take a breather and not read when you're really not in the mood to.  That enticing book on your pile will get read in time. I would love to have a print copy of Unlocking Worlds just so that I can go back and scribble and underline it and enjoy it all over again.

In a future world that is ruled by dragon shifters, fertile women are scarce. They are so scarce that women capable of having children are now often cryogenically frozen for centuries in order to help future generations reproduce.

Curvy Vivian Mason was one of those women who was frozen hundreds of years ago, and now it is time for her to be melted.

Dragon Commander Jackson Wallace is in urgent need of an heir, and he demands that Vivian is melted and awakened in order to produce one for him.

Now, with no memory of how she even got there, Vivian has no choice but to go along with whatever her new mate demands - no matter how bad, rough, or naughty it might seem.

Can Vivian produce the baby dragon that Jackson so demands? And what might happen when she finally remembers who she was before she was melted?

Your time would be better spent washing your clothes, vacuuming, or counting to ten... Speaking of which I don't even know where to begin with what's all wrong with this story. I can only assume I accidentally read a story meant for young teens. This was VERY hard to finish. ***SPOILER ALERT*** Should I start with the fact that the hero would be out fighting for days and never come back with so much as a scratch? Not to mention that in the whole entire story of them constantly battling it out, that not even one of his people died? Geez don't get me started on the villain. In the story the author talks about how the dragons are immortal and how hard it is to kill them (they have been around for about 300 years) but all of a sudden in the end "thousands" of them are killed by "hundreds" of good dragons... say what now? I'm not even going to discuss Vivian, it just isn't worth the time. Should I even touch upon the Time Machine? This book was just ridiculous... In the story it was as easily destroyed as Humpty Dumpty was, with about the same amount of protection. You would think this being the future and all, that "SOME" type of security would be in place to protect the Time Machine but no... ummmm no.... You would think it would be hidden underground and VERY heavily guarded but no... no... It was as easy as walking up to some kids on the beach and stepping in their sand castle. Ridiculous...

53 of 59 people found the following review helpful. Interesting premise, but.... The book might appeal to New Adult readers By Marie I bought this based on the opening snippet and reviews, I should have noticed they were mostly not verified purchases. The story is repetitive and juvenile. Vivian was cruelly self obsessed and foolish. If you are kidnapped by an abusive ex and he says now my enemy will never get to have his desired heir with you; you never say, too late, I'm already pregnant. Regularly feeding women moldy bread crusts, really...I could continue to rant about the ludicrous plot but I've already spent too much time on this book.

25 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Rude Female By Hanna I started but could not even finish. The premise of the story was interesting, but the female main character sucked. The male was sweet and considerate yet she insisted on being a class A beeyoch. I gave up on the book when they made a deal for her to produce an heir and then immediately run away to a parallel universe.

Alison Campbell’s reality is far from ordinary. All her life she’s been told that there are things that go bump in the night; dangerous creatures that are half animal, half man. Not only that, she’s one of the chosen ones whose job it is to protect humanity from these monsters by rooting them all out. That is why she’s trying to get close to some of them, by posing as an informant against her own people. However, the more time she spends with ‘the other side’, the less can continue to believe that they’re inherently evil… In fact, she’s actually developing feelings for one of them. So, who are the real monsters? Bear shifter and local leader of The Alliance, Jamie Abbott is hot on the trail of The Sons of Domnall, a secret society of humans out to destroy all of his kind. After an attempt to bring down their Edinburgh cell, he and his team are scrambling to question their prisoners before the Sons inevitably mount a rescue effort. That’s when he meets Alison, the mysterious and curvaceous beauty who looks strangely familiar. It’s attraction at first sight, but Jamie can’t shake the feeling that Alison, the woman his bear has chosen as his mate, is hiding something big… Before long, the Sons of Domnall will strike back at Jamie and The Alliance. It’ll be time for everyone to choose where their loyalties lie: love or family, human or shifter? This paranormal romance novella is the third in the Scottish Werebears series. Although each part stands on its own and can be read out of order, reading them one after the other would provide the best possible experience.

By Renee This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of Audiobook Blast. This is the third book in this series and it continues to surprise and capture the reader/listeners interest. A Forbidden Love is the story of Jamie Abbott, the Shifter Alliance Team Leader, based in Edinburgh, Scotland and the Alison Campbell, who happens to be the daughter of the head of the Sons of Domnall. The story opens with a Prologue describing the day that Jamie’s younger brother, Matthew, disappeared while playing with Jamie on the beach. We knew, from Book 2 that Jamie had a well-guarded secret and now we find out what that secret is.We also know from the previous book that Alison Campbell has been masquerading as a willing informant trying to infiltrate the Alliance and discover where, in Edinburgh, their headquarters is so that her father and his group can attack and destroy the shifters located there. Meanwhile, Alison’s father and two of his men have been captured by the Alliance and are being held and questioned at Headquarters by Jamie and his team.Alison’s brother, Garreth, has taken charge of the Sons of Domnall in their father’s absence and is not happy about Alison getting involved with the ‘animals’ at the Alliance. When Jamie and Alison meet, he recognizes right away that she is his mate. He does not know it is her father he is holding for interrogation, he only knows he must claim her. Alison is also attracted to Jamie and decides it is worth risking her brother’s ire to have a fling with him. And so it begins …Will Garreth find his father and their men before they are shipped off to National Headquarters for further interrogation? Will Alison be able to leave Jamie once they’ve been together, will she want to? And what of Jamie’s brother, Matthew? Is there a connection? You’ll need to read or listen to the book to discover the answers. I can’t wait for Book 4!

This is book #3, and is the story of Jaime, the leader of the local Alliance group. They are working to protect shifters of all kinds from hate groups, specifically the Sons of Domnall. Has the right amount of intrigue, plot twists, romance and spice. He is one hot bear shifter and has always been a little unsettled due to a couple of things. One...his younger brother disappeared from the beach one day when then 12 year old Jaime was supposed to be watching him. Jaime has never forgiving himself for his brother Matthew's abduction. Two...he met his mate that same day, but was to young to understand that the young red headed girl was his mate. Jump forward to present day...he has a secret agenda, new name, and suffers from insomnia due to his overwhelming sense of lack of settlement. Both from his past, and from his bear.Allison is the human daughter of the leader of the local Sons of Domnall, a hate group that want nothing more than to hunt down and kill off all shifters, and is working as an informant to get info on the Alliance for her father's group. She has seen a lot of bad that her father and older brother are involved with. She has her own secrets.Jaime through his job with the Alliance meets Allison an informant and they realize that they are fated mates and that they do indeed know each other from that day on the beach. What insues is love for each other that hopefully is stronger than the people, opinions, and beliefs that would like to pull them apart. They will learn trust, the will experience betrayal, and Allison will realize that all the hate she has been taught her whole life is maybe not really how things are.I highly recommend reading this book. While it is a stand alone read, I would encourage you to read all three books in order. The side stories make a little more sense that way. I cannot wait for the next book to some out so I can see what happens with Matt's story.

By Happily Ever Chapter * * Provided by Author in Exchange for an Honest Review * *Judging a Book by it's Cover:Same great, vibrant colors as the first two novellas. This bear looks much less friendly. The composition of the model looks very unnatural and rather blobulous. Synopsis states it can stand alone, but this series reads more like a serial, where one one links onto and continues to the next. Definitely better to read from the beginning and in order.Looking Deeper:Third-person POV narrative. Jamie is a werebear and the Alliance leader in Edinburgh. Alison is the human "informant". Both have secrets. Secondary characters consist mostly of those we've met or have been told about in the previous two novellas. The lead characters are only just strong enough to carry the novella. I'm not sure what it is about this installment of the "series", but it fell a bit flat for me. As with this series, the chemistry is magnetic and attraction is immediate. Maybe because a chunk of the plot was already preset in the last book? Maybe because we know almost all of the characters? I'm not sure. The secondary cast was supportive and provided crucial gap-fillers. The plot felt flat; without the dimension and dynamics one would hope for in a longer story, but it *is* a quick read and provided enough content to make it through. The first third of the book lagged, but the pace eventually picked up and finally provided a smooth ride. There were some conflicts, but there's really no going against the mating bond, so in actuality, the conflicts are rendered moot. A minor secondary story line is cast out and resolved within the primary story, also giving indication that it'll be the next book in the series. Predictability was moderate. The conclusion is passable. While giving Jamie and Alison their assumed happily ever after, we are left with many openings: Matty's reunion, the prisoners swearing vengeance upon both Alison and the Alliance, the Alliance's threat to the recent odd matings. Though this was not my favorite volume of the ongoing saga, I do look forward to learning more about Matty and what he's been up to in Glasgow. Overall, I think I'd only recommend this series to others once all volumes or installments are out. Ms. Moone states that it can be read as a stand-alone, but I truly feel that you'd lose a lot of the comprehension of the ongoing story if you picked it up half-way through.-------------------------------------------------------------------------Rating: 3.5 [PG-13+] ~ Score: 3.9 ~ Stars: 4-------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Stephanie Hoff For any of you out there who enjoy shifter romance novels, Jessie Donovan‘s dragon-shifter novels are for you!**Be sure to read this book AFTER reading Stonefire Dragons #2, Seducing the Dragon, because it’s a continuation of that story.**This book revisits Evie and Bram, whom I always enjoyed as characters. Evie is just super funny! I would even put it out there that she has been my favorite female character of all of Jessie Donovan‘s dragon-shifter books. And Bram, well let’s just say that he is totally an alpha male but Evie doesn’t put up with it. Haha. It was great seeing many characters from the first books in the series and seeing where everyone has ended up. The previous books have made mention of Evie’s friend, Alice, who has been in hiding and I sure hope that she pops up soon. You know a chick who loves everything dragon-shifter has to end up with one! You’re bound to fall in love with characters that you haven’t even met yet!!I can’t stress enough that these dragon-shifter stories are absolutely fantastic! At the time that I was receiving the ARCs, each book came in a 4 part serial so we would get to read 4-5 chapters but then had to wait another month or two before we received the next 4-5 chapters. Lucky for you guys the first 5 books of the Stonefire Dragons and first of the Lochguard Dragons are already completely out for you to read all the way through!

By Ingrid Stephanie Jordan Author: Jessie DonovanReviewer: Stephanie Jordan☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆●☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆Ms. Jessie Donovan has out done herself with every book she's ever written. Loved by the Dragon is no exception, I started it and could not put it down. This book sadly made me cry and then we'll you'll have to read it and you will know.Bram Moore-Llewellyn is Stonefire's Clan Leader, has been working with his Head Protector, Kai Sutherland and Lochguard's Clan Leader, Finn Stewart, all three have been working long hours to come up with a plan to get the Dragon Hunters. Bram has concerns for his human mate who is ready to give birth in two weeks. A lot of women who are pregnant with Dragon Babies die in birthing.Evie Marie Marshall was miserable at eight and half months pregnant, she couldn’t get comfortable in any position. Lieutenant Callum Harper knows that his team are as tough as they come: nine highly trained men and women and one battle robot who’s eleven feet of pure, cybernetic muscle. But as they drop through the atmosphere of the uncharted planet Capsun 23, Cal can’t shake the feeling that something is off about this mission. Three data drones have previously touched down but quickly went dark. And now, all communication with a group of civilian researchers has been lost. Intel suspects scavengers are to blame—or at worst pirates. But Cal’s instincts are telling him otherwise. All that’s known about Capsun 23 is that the gravity is within acceptable limits, the air is breathable, and water is abundant. Three things to encourage life…but what kind of life?  Cal has never been one to back away from a potential fight, but if his instincts are right, a lone team simply won’t cut it. Not by a long shot. 'Harper's Ten' is the prequel to the Fractured Space series.

By Amazon Customer I loved Star Splinter and one of the things about it that I appreciated was that while it was the first of several books to come it still had a satisfying conclusion for the story told up to that point. That being the case it left me in the right frame of mind to enjoy this prequel as a very welcomed addition to the series. While Star Splinter featured a good amount of adventurous globetrotting, Harper's Ten takes place all on one largely uncharted planet. Making for a much more intimate tale, even claustrophobic at times (in a good and thrilling way), The planet itself functions as a character and it's mysterious influence adds to a sense of foreboding throughout despite a deceptively tranquil appearance. What led me to read Star Splinter was a reviewer describing it as a "giant mash up of Star Trek, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park." In that same vein for Harper's Ten I'd say keep Star Trek and swap out the rest for Aliens. With this latest entry Fractured Space has begun to cement itself as one of my favorite sci-fi series. Lastly, if you're new to the series you can read this book first as it's ending rolls right into where Star Splinter begins.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Well Done Prequel By Liquid Frost The setting is Capsun 23, an uncharted planet that by first glance is almost an Eden-esq environment with crystal clear lakes and clean skies. Too bad there are stranded scientists, malfunctioning search drones, and lack of comms. It is a discovery and rescue mission with a small team in an unknown environment....what could possibly go wrong?Just like the series launch, Harper's 10 introduces a full cast of characters, and through a great deal of action, you get a feel for each player as you see how the adventure unfolds. It is character driven, but also action driven, which any good Space Opera needs to keep readers engaged. At this point in Callum's life, he isn't the Reluctant Hero which is so formulaic in this genre. He is simply a soldier, a leader with conflicting human emotions. He does the right thing, eventually, and works hard to keep his team and others inline and alive.I truly enjoyed Star Splinter Fractured Space Series Book One so I happily read a prequel to the series. Most prequels often come out after a series is established, but having enjoyed the character, Callum Harper, it was fun to get his back-story. And boy do you get it. Harper's 10 takes you on Harper's mission right before he returns to have a chat with his CO, Captain Decker.Solid action and characters with a couple percentage points knocked off for the chosen antagonist (I agree with Indiana Jones, so there is the ONLY hint of a non-spoiler).4.6 for me. I stayed up two long nights and flew through this prequel. The author was nice enough to send a copy for review.

It is refreshing to read something that is well edited and not full of distracting errors. While I was hoping for some more twists, especially towards the end, the author didn't disappoint. Well developed characters and an exciting plot made this an excellent read. I burned through this book in about 2 days and I'm looking forward to the next Fractured Space book. Good job, J G Cressey.

The Categorical Universe of Candice Phee, by Barry Jonsberg

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—Candice Phee's teacher assigned a 26 paragraph (each beginning with a different letter of the alphabet) long essay on something that has happened in the past. But quirky and literal-minded Candice is unable to express her life in such a concise fashion. Instead, she produces a chapter for each, outlining the unexpected death of her younger sister, an ongoing family feud, a neighbor who claims to be from another dimension, and her pet fish. As she writes, she strives to bring her cherished sense of order to the lives of her loved ones by fixing their problems through one grand gesture at a time. Candice is a strong central character, full of personality and a desire to bring happiness to those around her at any cost. The interwoven plots create a rich story, covering a wide expanse that includes loss of a loved one, a caretaker's depression, (possible) brain injuries, and unexpected friendships. The humor laced throughout can be uneven at times, moving from a serious moment to absurd imagery so quickly that readers may need to take pause. Candice takes similar hairpin turns from being incredibly literal, fact-focused and cognizant of social cues, to making large lapses in judgment. The issue of her seemingly ignored pen pal letters, interspersed throughout the alphabetical chapters, also ties up a bit too neatly at the end. This is a strong readalike for Counting by 7s (Dial, 2013) and Out of My Mind(S. & S., 2010).—Nicole Signoretta Sutton, Kingston Elementary School, Cherry Hill, NJ

You’re judging it from page one onward, informed by your own personal prejudices and reading history. Then there’s this moment when a shift takes place. It might be a subtle shift or it might be sudden and violent but all of a sudden it’s there. One minute you’re just reading for the heck of it, and the next you are LOVING what you’re reading, hoping it never has to end. Happily, that was my experience with Barry Jonsberg’s The Categorical Universe of Candice Phee. Lots of books promise you that you’ll fall in love with their odd characters. They’ll say something along the lines of “You won’t like her – you’ll love her.” And usually that’s untrue. But in this case, I really do love Candice. How can you not? She wants to turn her fish atheist, for crying out loud. And on that note . . .In Candice’s own words, her family could not be considered, “front-runners for Australian Happy Family of the Year.” Her baby sister died years ago, her mother is depressed, her father is angry with his brother (sure that the man got rich on one of his ideas), and her Rich Uncle Brian is a lonely cuss. She’s kind of an odd kid in and of herself. The kind that doesn’t have a lot of friends but doesn’t mind the fact. There are other problems, of course. She worries that her fish has set her up as a false god. She worries that her friend Douglas, who seriously believes he’s from another dimension, intends to throw himself into a gorge. But at least she has her pen pal (who has never written back, but that’s no problem) to write to. And as Candice says, “I want to pursue happiness. I want to catch it, grab it by the scruff of the neck, drag it home, and force it to embrace all the people I mentioned above. I’m just not sure how to accomplish this. But I am determined to try.”The thing you have to admire about Candice is that she’s a remarkably proactive protagonist. When she’s sick and tired of the broken state of her family she sets out to correct their problems (sometimes with odd results). When she thinks there’s a possibility of a friend doing something stupid she will put herself in harm’s way (or at least, annoyance’s way) to help him out. She’s smart as a whip, a fact that no one around her notices. And Candice is also a relentless optimist, but not in an annoying way. She has no interest at all in what you think of her. Early in the book she mentions that she has lots of friends as far as she’s concerned but that, “As far as everyone else was concerned, I didn’t have a friend in the world. Does that make a difference? I’m not sure.” Kids have so many bully books these days that it’s a huge relief to read one where the mean girl teases Candice and the words have absolutely zippo effect on her whatsoever. Like Teflon in a way, is this kid. Bullied kids make for dull reading. Candice is never dull. She’s also not autistic. I feel like that kind of statement shouldn’t be as revolutionary as it is. Heck, it’s practically self-explanatory. We’re so used to kids on the autism spectrum in our children’s literature these days that we have a hard time remembering the ones that are just plain old weird. But they exist. In fact, Candice self-diagnoses as weird. When she was young she witnessed her beloved baby sister’s death from SIDS and it mucked her up in a couple ways. Not as many ways as her mother and father, but a lot of ways just the same. So there’s a wonderful scene where a friend’s mother makes the assumption that Candice is autistic. When she says that she is not the friend’s mom asks, “Then what are you?” “I’m me.” That could come off as cute. Here, for whatever reason, it does not.I’ve already heard a couple people compare this book to Holly Goldberg Sloan’s book Counting By 7s which is understandable, if somewhat misleading. There are some major differences at work. First off, there’s the language. There’s a distinct deliciousness to Candice’s speech patterns. When her uncle wins her a stuffed toy at a fair that “might have been a gnu or a camel with severe disabilities” she tells him in no uncertain terms that it is “vile”. And then the descriptions in the book are also out of his world. A forced smile is described as “one of those smiles when someone has pointed a camera at you for half an hour and neglected to press the shutter.” Her friend Douglas is described as, “His eyes crowd toward the middle, as if they are trying to merge together but are prevented from doing so by the barrier of his nose, which is larger than you’d wish if you were designing it from scratch.” Her mother’s bedroom where she spends much of her time when depressed “smelled of something that had spent a long time out of the sunshine.”Candice’s problems don’t just disappear miraculously in a puff of smoke either. By the end of the book she’s figured out how to mend some of the bigger problems that have been undermining her family’s happiness, but her sister is still dead, her mother still has depression, and her father still resents his brother. Things are significantly better, but there’s a long road to hoe. It is amazing that a book with this many potentially depressing subplots should be as upbeat, cheery, and downright hilarious as this. Jonsberg’s writing gives the book a skewed one-of-a-kind view of the world that is unlike any other you might encounter. You’ll like this book AND love it. And for what it’s worth, kid readers will too.For ages 9-12.

CANDICE PHEE'S LIFE IS MORE THAN THE ALPHABET By Robin Leigh Morgan Before I start, it should be noted this book had been released previously in Australia under the title of "My Life as the Alphabet."In addition, I should point out that having read/review three rock romance novels by Nicky Wells, I've already became adjusted to the British spelling and usage of words contained in this book, which for some readers might take a little getting used to.When I first once opened the book and flipped through the pages I immediately got transported to the first grade [or was it Kindergarten] and had a primer to read. You know what I'm talking about; A is for Apple, B is for Boy, C is for Cat.As I read the first chapter of this book, "A is for Assignment," I immediately began to realize that you need to read as Barry Jonsberg meant it to be read. You need to read coming from the first person POV of Candice Phee herself, as she's the one who's actually writing this story. This came about because her teacher, Miss Bamford, had given her an assignment to write a simple essay consisting of twenty-six paragraphs with each paragraph starting a letter of the alphabet concerning something which had happened to you in the past. However, Candice, knowing she couldn't adequately tell her story in a mere twenty-six paragraphs, decided to write several paragraphs for each letter instead; and even mentioned she'd already written sixteen paragraphs for the letter "A" at one point. And as you might suspect she already envisioned having problems with the letters "Q" and "X."Candice's entire family seems to be dysfunctional as her father's despondent because a certain confrontation which had occurred eons ago; her mother's totally depressed to do a double mastectomy and having lost a child to SIDS. Her now rich Uncle Brian uses his wealth attempting to win other people's affection. And even though she has no idea whatsoever in terms of what she's doing, Candice is continuously trying to fix her family's multitude of problems on her own. It is because of this she seem to be the embodiment of being "quirky" in her personality. As we read subsequent chapter and letter of the alphabet, we see more and more of the episodic existence Candice has to endure to survive. I truly enjoyed reading this, the first of Barry Jonsberg's books I've had the pleasure to read. I feel it would be best suited to be read by children aged ten or more, and in the fifth grade. While the book would be something girls would tend to read more than boys--boys should not be forgotten as part of the audience of potential readers, since some of things Candice did, boys would be usually more apt to do than girls.I believe the US title for this book is more appropriate than its counterpart in Australia and the rest of the world since it more aptly describes Candice's world one letter of the alphabet at a time.I consider myself privileged to have received a free ARC [Advanced Reader's Copy - Uncorrected] copy of this book, which I got as part of GoodRead's GiveAway program. The above has been my honest opinion regardless the manner I've received this copy of the book. And I'm there happy to give "The Categorical Universe of Candice Phee" the 5 STARS it deserves.Robin Leigh Morgan is the author of "I Kissed a Ghost," a MG-YA Paranormal romance novel.

Does it represent/portray and do it well?Grief and depression are handled well and possibly also the autism spectrum and traumatic brain injury. I thought that these intense topics were covered appropriately and I was impressed by the mixture of dark topics with an accessible narrative.II. Does it teach me something or make me think? It made me wonder a lot about how things were going to turn out, so in that way it was intellectually thrilling. I think it also teaches a bit about positivity, especially in how the topics of depression and bullying are addressed.III. Does it perpetuate healthy ideals?I think that it does, in terms of focusing on healing, health, and family. I loved the focus on positivity and fighting to overcome depression.IV. How was the writing itself? (Style, plot, characters, ease of reading, pace, world-building.)Candice herself is very likable and the narrative style is engaging, clever, emotionally moving, and funny! Before I even realized, I genuinely cared about this entire family and I appreciated how I got to know the parents very slowly throughout the book. They went from being pieces of Candice’s life to being people I cared about just for themselves and their own issues. The pacing was perfect, the plot felt well-planned, and in general I felt like I was reading a very professional work from page 1 to page 242. There are ample subplots of which the resolutions could have ruined the book, but each one was handled with care. I will definitely be reading more work by this author.V. Did I enjoy reading it?Absolutely! There is nothing to complain about in this work and I emotionally and intellectually enjoyed each page! I strongly recommend it!

Yasmin's Hammer, by Ann Malaspina

From School Library Journal Grade 1-4 Yasmin and her sister are brick chippers in the noisy, crowded city of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Each day as Yasmin breaks up bricks to be made into concrete, and as her father pedals his rickshaw and her mother irons and sweeps in a rich man's house, she dreams of going to school. She resolves to swing her hammer extra hard and saves her meager coins to purchase a precious book, which no one in her family can read. Her determination inspires her parents her father finds a second route, and her mother begins making baskets to sell for extra money. And at long last, Yasmin's dream comes true one day her father pedals her and her sister to school. A bleak situation becomes a powerful tale of hope through Yasmin's passion and determination. Malaspina tells the tale in graceful, straightforward language, describing the overwhelming sounds of the city with the precision of a child's eye. Chayka's glowing oil paintings capture the bright colors of Dhaka and the cruelty of the brickyard where Yasmin and her sister work in the blinding sun as the boss lounges under an umbrella. Neither text nor illustrations gloss over the hardships the girls experience, but also do not dwell on them instead, the focus remains firmly on Yasmin's dreams and her resolve to achieve them. From Booklist Swinging a hammer all day as she and her little sister break bricks in the city heat of Dhaka, Bangladesh, Yasmin dreams of going to school. In a moving voice true to her viewpoint, Yasmin speaks in smooth free verse about her longing: “If I could read.” Young people will be moved as they recognize what they take for granted: education is a right that can set you free. The messages are in the details: when her little sister hurts her thumb with the hammer, Yasmin works harder, saves money to buy a book, and finally persuades her parents (who also cannot read) that however hard the struggle, the girls must go to school. And in the story's heartbreaking conclusion, the girls do begin to study. Stirring oil paintings bring the setting to a close with images of the sisters in the brickyard and their father pedaling a rickshaw through the crowded streets. The back matter includes a clear map, a glossary, and a bibliography with online sites about how to help children like Yasmin. Grades 2-5. --Hazel Rochman

Rodgers When Yasmin's family lost their house and their livelihood to the cyclone that hit their rural Bangladeshi village, they had little choice but to try and start over in the capital city. The walk to Dhaka took days, and when they arrived they only had the clothes on their backs and a few belongings that had survived the storm. Yet city life provided opportunities and new hope. Soon enough, Yasmin's father had work pedaling customers around the city in a rented rickshaw, her mother found a cleaning job in someone's house, and Yasmin and her sister Mita hammered bricks in Dhaka's construction industry. The working conditions at the brickyard were harsh, and Yasmin yearned for a better life that included going to school. She instinctively knew that if she and Mita could learn how to read, they could grow up to achieve the jobs of their dreams. Perhaps if they started with just one book, it would help them to take a different path than the one that poverty and desperation had forced them to embark upon in Dhaka.Illustrated with Doug Chaka's signature impressionistic style, this new book offers young learners a revealing look at the working and living conditions of the most vulnerable of the poor. The optimistic tone and child's point of view help to make Yasmin's Hammer accessible to young readers who may otherwise not identify with the topic. Teachers and parents will find the book a useful resource for talking about child labor and the value of an education.

I planned to give a copy to my sister, for her children. Then I read the book with my own children, age 6 and 8. They love school, but have just started to get to that whiny age where they sometimes don't want to go. This book, I am pretty sure, put and end to that. There was complete silence as I read it last night; as they listened to the heartbreaking story and became engrossed in the wonderful illustrations. They did not understand it - how could children their age have to work? What does it mean that they couldn't afford to send the girls to school? As we read on, they began to understand. They were so happy when Yasmin used her hard-earned money (yes, they learned what that meant too) to buy a book. But they were devastated when she brought it home and nobody in the house could read it. How could this be possible? We all cried. This morning, I needed them to get up extra early for school. There was not a single complaint. I sent the extra copy in to school for the library, because I want as many kids to read this as possible. I will have to buy my sister another copy.

Author Ann Malaspina's lyrical text is nothing short of cinematographic. Her vivid use of sensory details transports us to Bangladesh, where we experience Yasmin's world alongside her, aided by the lush and lovely illustrations. We understand, as Yasmin does, how learning to read can open the door to a brighter future. The story begins with Yasmin journeying to work in a ricksaw decorated with "a brave bandit queen from the movies." We can hear the "chipping, cracking/ crushing, smashing" of the brick factory and feel the grit in Yasmin's mouth as she swings her hammer. Her resourcefulness inspires the family to move toward a brighter tomorrow. This tale of one girl's courage not only introduces young people to the problems of illiteracy in the developing world but also to the universal rewards of working toward a dream. This is a book to be savored over and over again like the richest of chocolates.
