Ultralight and comfortable is a book about becoming an ultralight backpacking badass! Making the journey from heavy-miserable (tradition hiker) to ultralight wizard and having a shit load of fun along the way. This book is in no way politically correct or suitable for kids. This is about my journey and my experiences as well as a how to guide for people not wanting to make the same mistakes as I have.About this bookAfter getting some feedback on the first draft of this book, I realized how important it was to give a better picture of myself and the purpose of this book in order to truly understand and enjoy what I write. To be honest, the main purpose of this book is to poke a dead fish with a stick. In other words to have fun at someone else's expense. That someone else being the traditional gear manufacturers, hikers and mainstream gear shops. I wrote this book for you, the reader to have a good laugh and hopefully learn something along the way. This book is not meant to be a balanced, politically correct account about how to enjoy the outdoors; there are plenty of those books. This book is vulgar, offensive and skewed hard towards my own values and ideals. With that said, I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I have had writing it. This book was a passion product that I got inspired to write after making a 115-kilometer hike in Northern Sweden along the infamous Kingstrail. I noticed many things that really got my mind moving and I could not help myself but to laugh at other people's expense. Then I thought, why not try to help. I met countless hikers along the trail that had thousands and thousands of dollars of gear, yet you could tell they all wanted to kill themselves. Many couldn't even walk after the third day of hiking because the weight of their packs had destroyed their knees and thighs. My own experience in hiking starts and continues here in Sweden, you will notice throughout this book that I talk a lot about what works for me, here in Sweden in this climate and environment. Also, I wrote this book as a three season primer, meaning I don't take winter hiking into account as that is a completely different subject manner on it's own, possibly one I will tackle in a later book. I am American by birth and raised in Hawaii and California before migrating here to piss weather Sweden 15 years ago.My blog ultralightandcomfortable.com is a mix between a Hiking and photography blog. You can find a lot of gear reviews there as well as Photo galleries.

Review Learn from a Pro who has hiked the last quadrillon years facing the final frontier and lived off the land? Or learn from a guy just like you who manages to go light, kick ass and ultimately enjoys his time outdoors? Your choice but Ken Shaw offers insight into the lightweight world that leaves you with the feeling of " I can do that too!" Carsten Jost (AT und PCT Thruhiker)  I like it (this book), the disrespectful tone, the no-holds-barred non-balanced way of describing his experiences. Probably because it is just the opposite of my own writing. And a good complement. This book is intended to irritate the hell out of the reader." Amundsen A loud and proud light packer - great idea and promise, but could do with far more vinegar for the traditional outdoor market. Also, it would be nice if the spelling and grammar were taken up a couple of notches. Normally not a problem, but in a couple of places the text gets a wee bit foggy. One more read-through, please. That said, last summer I passed a group of Germans looking for dry & safe stones crossing a little brook. Thanks to Mr. Shaw, I now know what I felt after plowing across and shaking my legs on the other side: boss.

By Sun Waker This book was really helpful - and I think it could help both the brand new hiker wanting to go ultralight, and someone with a bit more experience.True, he is quite liberal with his language - but the subtitle warns you as much. Although a little heavy handed here and there, I found it overall quite amusing. It's refreshing to hear a no bull approach to picking gear, especially when we are fed so much crap from the mainstream outdoor industry.Unlike the other reviewer, I did not think it needed more vinegar. I think the author conveyed very well that we've long been fed crap about having to be prepared for every possible circumstance. But, most of us do not want to be Bear Grylls. It is helpful to realize you simply do not need most of the things people try to sell you in outdoor stores. It is really helpful to know where to spend your money in gear - so you have just enough, but so what you do have is high quality, as light as possible, multiple function gear that will help you enjoy your trip rather than rue it.I also really appreciated the down to earth approach and relating of his mistakes, which made it much more accessible. You do not feel overwhelmed reading this book; it does not make you think that ultralight hiking is for pros only. Finally, although I did not end up purchasing the same gear as the author (my budget is smaller), it forced me to rethink my approach. I ended up selling gear (yay!) and funding new, much lighter gear. Like the other reviewer, my base weight is now 12lbs, but that includes a raft! Yay! And thanks to Mr. Shaw and Andrew Skurka I took the plunge and downsized my pack from a 60L to a 38L. Very happy so far.The book is reminiscent of Andrew Skurka's philosophy and style, which I like. They've both been through super radical ultralight decisions, and have learned where it does not pay to be "stupid light". Reading this book helps you have a lighter hiking experience, but to do it smarter. For example - his tip to use the Gram Weenie app was great. So much better than my old spreadsheet. If you're interested in this topic, and are not afraid of a little profanity, get it. I wish this information would be common place; it would save so much wasted money in suboptimal gear that turns people away from backpacking. Even my hiking partner was sold on it - he passed on the tank-like hiking boots and went for the quick drying trail runners.I realize my review is glowing. But I do not know Kenneth Shaw and I paid full price for this book. It was just really helpful in encouraging my partner and I to change my gear.Another tip (I think from Andrew Skurka, I can't remember for sure): you can save a lot of weight by what you carry between your ears. Learn some skills and take them on the trail with you. It will bring a lot of comfort, and save a lot of weight.

My kind of backpacker, even though I would only class myself (at this stage) as a lightweight with 3-day gear, excluding consumables, hovering at around 12 pounds. I found myself laughing out loud the 2 finger and the odd single finger comments to the outdoor industry. So true. Took me a few years to arrive at the 3 for 3 rule and a lot more besides and I found my journey related to so much of what was written. Ken, if you can ever tear yourself away from the wonder that is Sweden, I would be happy to show you the lesser known parts of the glorious and enchanting Lake District National Park here in the UK.
