From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—The prolific Yolen has written a paean to the eternal cycle of the seasons, beginning with winter and ending as fall fades into that season once again. The poetry evokes some interesting images: "Water, waves,/shimmering days./Toes wiggle,/fish wriggle/in a strange haze." And again: "Pumpkins and gourds/and the clamor/ of herds./Honking geese Vs.,/And the bare-bones of trees." However, it is Ashlock's pencil and watercolor illustrations that are the standout here. The artist focuses her attention largely on the animal world with sometimes startlingly realistic depictions of snowy owls, foxes, otters, weasels, snowshoe hares, deer, and many more. The animals peek out from hollow tree trunks and through blades of grass, and it is often necessary to spend some enjoyable time studying the pages to make sure you haven't missed that hedgehog or opossum hanging by its tail. Often the animals (particularly that magnificent snowy owl) appear to be making direct eye contact with readers. People are seen in the background, engaging in appropriate seasonal activities, as if unaware that their forest friends are so close by. Faux Five Star Reviews Based on Free Copies By NeedsMore Shoes You know it's a bad sign when you open a book and it's double spaced and in larger-than-normal font.I purchased this book based on the sterling reviews and now that I am 75% through it is clear to me that I was suckered. I came back on here in disbelief to revisit and revaluate some of the reviews now that I have actually read the book. What is obvious to me now from reading the reviews closely is that if you expand a good number of the reviews and read to the end you will find one thing in common: "Disclosure: I received a copy of the book for free" or " "I was given a copy of this book". (You can run a search of the reviews for copy or free--and see the number of reviewers who were actually honest enough to disclose that.) I wish the reviewers would finish that sentence though. Is it "I received a copy of the book for free from my spouse as a birthday gift?" or " I received a copy of the book for free by winning some random book lottery?" or "I received a copy of the book from the book's publisher/author/marketer?". The only thing that would matter is the last one, why said reviewer was chosen, and how it might have affected his/her review...but I suppose I can guess the answer.Here is your free copy of this book:You want to play chess and act strategically as a leader, and not checkers. Congratulations, Jack said."At the end of the day, while there might be some wisdom in this book, and I am an appreciate-the-nuggets kind of person, there is no way this book is worthy of five stars. In terms of return on reading investment, this is not the best or even a decent value. The positive is that the whole book including acknowledgements, and epilogue is only 125 pages and could be half of that if they had used conventional formatting so it won't waste too much of your time.

I prefer my business books to be more nonfiction than a bunch of tips buried inside of a fictionalized storyline that is frankly uninteresting and gets in the way of the wisdom it's trying to impart.

Beware of Whack-a-Mole leadership and management By Robert Morris I have read and reviewed all of Mark Miller's previous books, including Great Leaders Grow and The Secret (both in collaboration with Ken Blanchard) and consider him one of the most observant and insightful business thinkers in thought leadership. Once again in Chess Not Checkers, he calls upon his highly developed skills as a raconteur to provide information, insights, and counsel in the form of a business narrative. That is, he establishes a setting, introduces characters, builds tension with conflicts that occur during the plot development, and eventually there is a climax with resolution of the key issues.The details of this narrative are best revealed in context. However, I am comfortable suggesting what the major issues are that Miller addresses, based on his own wide and deep background in leadership, management, personal growth, and professional development. These issues are involved when attempting to answer questions such as these:o How best to identify the most important questions to ask and the most difficult to solve?o How best to identify those answers and solutions?o How to balance collective judgment with individual initiative?o Every "game" has its rules and some games are more complicated than others. How to decide which game and how best to play it?o How to keep score? That is, how to measure what is most important?o How to create a sense of urgency to obtain buy-in for proposed action?o How to create a sense of "One for all, all for one"?o How to get talent and work in proper alignment?o How to know when to stay the course, change it, or end the given "journey"?o To what extent should a "turnaround mindset" be sustained after a turnaround has succeeded?The new CEO and the other players in Miller's narrative face the same questions, problems, challenges, frustrations, ambiguities, anxieties, etc. that counterparts in the so-called "real world" do. Ecclesiastes once suggested that "there is nothing new" whereas Heraclitus suggested that "everything changes, nothing changes." They are both correct.All organizations need effective leaders at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. Every day, there are "games" played at those levels and in those areas. Sometimes it's checkers, other times it's chess. All organizations need leaders who are masters at both games and constantly strengthen their skills at both.

Covers what transportation will run in case of EMP as most of these types of book. Way too much information for my taste about types of guns. People are hard working and pragmatic. Very little violence.

A great compilation of novellas and short stories available for new readers as well as for the fans without any difficulty.Suzanne really did a wonderful job to introduce the world of the Sentinels of new Orleans for those new to it and set a form of timeline for the ones who follow the series from the beginning. She mixed past pieces of work that were available as treat on her blog for a limited time, some updated, modified etc, with new stories very captivating and as a bonus some info about the universes and the characters so that this book is something new for all of us.Pirateship Down” This novella is the pure treasure of this kind of anthology, Pirateship Down is a real pearl when you have read the series but you should really be able to enjoy it without difficulty after haing read the “lagniappe” becaus ethat give you a big inside in the universe.For those who have read the series, you can see how this fit wonderfully and at the same time stays a pure treat as it doesn’t impact the next book ( in the sense that you won’t feel like you have missed something if you read the book and not the novella but really that would be too sad to miss this!)Jean Lafitte has decided to reclaim one of his ship which has been found in the waters of the sea... to do so he drag along his friend Rene and Dj which is still suffering from her last experience. Both friends know they can’t go against Jean but that they must keep him out of the troubles....with a proud determined pirate you can imagine how it won’t be easy . Full of humour this novella won’t leave you indifferent, this was a pure joy and full of laughing time for me so i can’t recommend it to you enough.If you love Jean or simply want to have a fun reading moment, read this novella!Suzanne really did us a big favor by creating this book we awaited so long as a treat to be patient until the release of the next book so don’t hesitate to grab this one and spread the word. By Caterina This read constitutes a collection of short stories and trivial information concerning Suzanne Johnson's Sentinels of New Orleans series!It was a fun and greatly entertaining read, very well-built by the author, so that it wouldn't be hard for someone who hasn't read any books in these series -someone like me -, to follow up.In more detail, the first short story "Talk Like a Pirate", mainly features 19-th century French Pirate Jean Lafitte and New Orleans Wizard Sentinel Gerry St. Simon. We get a first taste of the (in)famous pirate, and are able to see his interaction with the wizard before the series started.Next, we get "a little something extra", with a brief, but to the point, explanation of the Sentinels Multiverse, and its inhabitants! This is where you can find out more about the wizards, the fae, the merfolk, and even the elves!"Alex, The Pig" is a short story that features three of the protagonists of the Sentinels of New Orleans series, DJ, Alex and Rene. It is a short, fun read, about a small adventure that includes a certain cursed leprechaun!The next story, "Cat Mon Dieu" features a rather brief adventure of the pirate Jean Lafitte, in the Rouses Supermarket, and the chaos he just barely avoided causing!A few trivia is then offered about said pirate, for us to get a glimpse in his life before he was killed and became a historical undead livind in the Beyond!More information about Alex can be found on "Rivalry", a short featuring himself and his cousin when they were still teenagers, and around the time he had just started getting to know his shapeshifts. For everyone that has read the series, this short would actually prove to be very enlightening as to why he is who he is, and about the way he behaves!Both "Swamp Rats" and "Danger: Curves Ahead" featured DJ and Alex, giving us a glimpse of their relationship and how they interact with each other!Another extra follows, regarding the Sentinels Bibliography, before another story occurring between Alex and his cousin Jacob is provided!Last but not least, the novella with the same name as this collection, "Pirateship Down" is a quite an interesting read featuring DJ, Rene and their adventures trying to get Jean Lafitte out of the mess he has created for himself.All the stories, and especially the novella, are quick, witty and with lots and lots of humor! I actually caught myself not only chuckling, but also laughing out loud with DJ's narration. I loved the author's writing style, and the whole collection made me want to start the series as soon as I get them on my hands!All in all, 5 stars to a book that made me laugh more than any has succeeded in doing in a long long time!

By Book Goddess Pirateship Down is a fun filled collection of stories set in the world of the Sentinels of New Orleans. This is a terrific opportunity for anyone who has not yet read the series to get introduced to the cast of characters because you do not need to know the overall story arc to appreciate these stories. For established Sentinel fans, the tales provide more insight into your favorites, especially Jean LaFitte. The title novella features Jean at his troublesome, charismatic best in his attempt to reclaim one of his sunken ships. Grab your copy and be prepared to be entertained!

In terms of format, it is very cool. Featuring 6 different Halloween scenes with pop-ups, they are both large and move as you open and shut the book. That being said, you have to be careful as you turn each page so as to not bend the large popups. This is more appropriate for a child who is able to be a bit more gentle with books (or a watchful adult reader)Summary: Told in a cute rhythmic poem, Mouse explores a haunted house and we are taken room by room to see what lies ahead- from witches to potions and broomsticks to skeletons, there are all the classic Halloweeny characters without being too scary.5 stars for the popups alone. The story was just an added bonus!

By DMK This is the third book in Glory Beyond Battle trilogy. As with the previous two, I was provided a copy in exchange for my review.As usual with my book reviews, I do not want to put out any spoilers, so I am not going to go into any details. As with the first two books, I finished this one rather quickly. It was hard to put down. This is a fun, entertaining read. Great when you need to relax and unwind. If you enjoy stories about swords, magic or dragons then I would recommend this book, and the previous two "It Rained Red Upon The Arena" and "They Were Born Upon Ashe"s before starting this book.

By Chris Hammond The First AI War put a lot of pieces together from the other books in the Wandering Engineer world. We knew that there was an AI war but had no idea of the true nature of the war. That the AI was bent on complete destruction of humanity. The war also brought about additional Neo's, specifically the predator species, the fear of nanites and antimatter. But the worse part is what happened with Jack and his company, nothing worse than having people you always thought you could trust and have your back, stick a knife in it. I will not add any more than that as it would be a major spoiler, read the book.Very good read.

You also write a full novel, not like some people who are churning out 200 and some pages and calling it a novel. To anyone thinking about reading any of his works, go for it. Start with the Wandering Engineer, yes there are some typos, but this guy is self published so cut him some slack. Please keep writing and I'll keep buying your books.

Too many locations, too many involved, toomuch computer talk. He needs better readers that look for mistakes and sentences that make no sense. However, that said,I love the wandering engineer series, especially Jethro. Keep it up Chris.

It's a bit too big for her to hold. I expected it to be smaller, but she loves it. The rhymes are catchy, drawings beautiful and cute at the same time.

Didn't like Lily as a heroine, she has chemistry with Cole and Deep Sleep? Spoiler****she is sexually active with 2 people (as far as she knows) within hours of one another***...not heroine material to me that is trashy. 2. Thought this was a complete series...it's not. You will apparently need to read the Alex stories to get all the answers. You will be left hanging with many questions. 3. The was so much fluffed dialogue I found myself skipping through the book. 4. I felt NO connection between Cole and Lily. Liked Cole and enjoyed reading about he and Alex more than Lily. So would I recommend...if you have kindle unlimited and have nothing else to read then sure. Otherwise don't waste your time.

I first have to start off by saying I generally don't read paranormal fantasy romance, but there was just something about this one the drew me in. You have it all, sexy superhero, head strong heroine who is trying to make a name for herself, great secondary characters and a lot of romance! Oh and of course a scary bad guy wanting to takeover the city. If you are looking for something fun to read that gives you all of the above I definitely recommend Deep!

By Cali Mel I LOVE THIS SERIES!Ms. Grantham artfully blends two worlds together: Earth and the magical world of Faythander. Olive Kennedy continues her adventures in Faythander. When a magical object is destroyed, Olive is tasked with protecting the magic it held and moving it to the only safe place left in the world of Faythander. To survive the trip and find the safe haven, Olive must seek help from Wults, Elves, Dragons and Pixies. Friend and foe alike must unite to defend the magic of Faythander from a powerful foe, Geth, the shape shifting goblin king out for vengeance.I love the character of half elf, Olive. She is brave and loyal, honest and true. She sets aside her own comfort to help her friends and to save her world. Her goodness wins her many friends along the way. She grows a lot in this story as she faces challenges that test the very fiber of her being. I love the entire Wult society, inspired I’m sure by the Vikings of Scandinavia. They are a violent and competitive race with a strong sense of honor and duty, as well as a healthy sense of humor. The elves, so often the main heroes of fantasy novels, are not clearly defined; so clouded in mystery and intrigue it is hard to decide if they are good or bad guys. The dragons are majestic and powerful creatures who kindly adopted Olive into their royal family and raised her as their own. The pixies seek only to protect the sacred tree that holds the pure magic of Faythander. Two of them befriend Olive and help her along the way. Even the Goblins get some time as Ms. Grantham explains how they came to be.Book two solves one problem but opens up questions that must be answered in the next book. Some doors seem shut, but so much more needs to be accomplished. A Fantasy Read That is Both Lighthearted and Entertaining, But Also Leaves You With Hope By Courtney- The Moral of Our Stories Tamara Grantham’s Midas touch has worked its charm again with the second book in the Olive Kennedy: Fairy World MD entitled Spellweaver.When we first left off with the first installment of this series, Dreamthief, I knew that it was amounting to something special. That inkling has been confirmed tenfold after reading Spellweaver. The unique voice that Grantham breathes into Olive Kennedy is equal parts quirky and relatable. Olive is a character that does not wallow in self-pity or let herself remain mired down by seemingly insurmountable circumstances. She is a girl who doesn’t quite fit in, but instead of letting her status hold her back, she utilizes her differences to accomplish feats that none before or after could achieve. So this story is not simply entertaining, it is inspiring.The world Grantham has constructed for Olive Kennedy to inhabit is unmatched. It is abundantly clear that Grantham took extreme care in her world building. She has created not one, but two absolutely believable realms that span this series. As if this weren’t a large enough undertaking, she has layered with the Fairy World numerous regions, races, and cultures. Each tier of this imaginative world ushers you deeper within the story and into a journey you won’t soon forget.Grantham has also penned the most interesting set of secondary characters to keep Olive company. No matter how much time any one character spends with Olive, all are equally created. There is no being out of place, and I found myself constantly eager to see who or what Grantham had planned next for both Olive and her readers. Being able to meet these creatures as Olive did only magnified the enjoyment factor of this work.They say that the best books leave an impression far beyond the turn of the last page. This sentiment is a gross understatement to describe how Spellweaver has left me. I found both refuge and hope within the pages of Spellweaver, each being much needed. The entertainment that this book reads is most certainly a 5 star rating, but the inspiration it offers is off the charts.

If you love dogs you will find this book deeply fulfilling. The Guardian Hound, Night, is as developed as author's human characters-not as a pseudo human with fur but written with all the knowledge of dog behavior, loyalty and love. Hidden within the story is the true Secret Life Of Dogs. You will want your own Pack!!Ignore cover art. Yes a modern American ends in alternate reality where clothing is long dresses but it is NOT a regency paranormal. This is a fine fantasy tale suitable for all ages. The writer kept my attention which prompted me to read the whole series By MargoforAnimals I am not much of a book reader and typically ditch a new book within the first 40 pages. I devoured this book. I used my Kindle Fire to have the book read to me and it became part of "my" reward time when I finished working or chores. It took me a bit to get used to receiving the story from so many different characters' perspectives, but by the end of the first book I realized I was well acquainted and interested with a small army of very diverse people and animals. NOTE: If you are 'into' understanding animal behavior - you get some key points from this series of books that I found more helpful then from many animal behavior books I reviewed. (Not kidding.) I sincerely recommend this book (actually the whole series which I tore through in record time) but recognize that this may not be everyone's cup of tea. Sample it. You will know once you get into the first adventure if you are hooked or not.

Conwell (1843-1925) observed, "I am astonished that so many people should care to hear this story over again. Indeed, this lecture has become a study in psychology; it often breaks all rules of oratory, departs from the precepts of rhetoric, and yet remains the most popular of any lecture I have delivered in the fifty-seven years of my public life. I have sometimes studied for a year upon a lecture and made careful research, and then presented the lecture just once -- never delivered it again. I put too much work on it. But this had no work on it -- thrown together perfectly at random, spoken offhand without any special preparation, and it succeeds when the thing we study, work over, adjust to a plan, is an entire failure." He then went on to explain to each audience that "acres of diamonds are to be found in this city, and you are to find them. Many have found them. And what man has done, man can do. [They are] are not in far-away mountains or in distant seas; they are in your own back yard if you will but dig for them." These comments provide an excellent introduction to Conwell's book. As I read it, I thought about Dorothy in L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz. Only after a series of adventures far from Kansas did she realize that "there's no place like home." What Conwell has in mind involves far more than such appreciation, however. The tale he shares in this book, concerning a wealthy Persian named Ali Hafed, demonstrates that almost everything we may seek elsewhere is already in our lives and available to us.

Conwell tells the story of a man who looked for diamonds and travelled the whole world to find them. After years of searching he came back home empty handed. His wife remarried and he was destitute. By accident one day he found the diamonds in his own backyard. The moral is obvious: Examine all the evidence to find truth. Most of the time its right under your nose. Although conwell uses this story to illustrate some matters of business, the message can be applied to anything. The smartest people in the world use the principles in this book whether they know it or not. The smart and succesful are usually in the minority and probably always will be. Others may not grasp the genius in this book, but the principles of success are here.

The story line is both straight forward and at the same time complex. Unlike other reviewers I found the characters easily identifiable, for example I knew A & B belonged to the clans, H & I belonged to the outcasts, and X, Y & Z belonged to the roterralar. However there were those whose group was unlisted, or unclear, like Elyana, Briane, Edriean, Beryl, the Rahuli, and the Orinai.So, long and short...the story revolves around Lhaurel, clan then roterralar, and her journey to become what she is meant to be. Along the way we encounter Gavin who is fulfilling the quest of his people to climb the walls of the Oasis, Kaiden who is revenging the death of his father, and Taren's quest to become ruler of all the clans.Much is left hanging at the end of this novel, like...who is the Orinai...what happened all those years ago between the Rahuli and the Orinai...what is the relationship between the Rahuli and The Orinai...who is the enemy that is mentioned by both Elyana and Kaiden...what is the bloodlines that Beryl mentions coming together at the end of the novel...why does Beryl hear voices, and whose voices does he hear...who was Briane and who did she belong to, and why was she lost...what is Beryl...who was Eldriean and how did he come to be the leader of the people...lastly was the world always such a large desert or is the world physically unchanged and the people have just wondered away from the non-desert parts of the world.

I couldn't put the book down - dwarves, dragons, modern-day setting, Marines and automatic fire...What's not to like? I'm a Lee Child aficionado, so this was a great intro to fantasy for me. Mystery, mayhem, and fantastical elements. Bizarre, and such an awesome combo. It has great pacing - no slow, pregnant pauses. Loved the alternating viewpoints in the chapters; they really serve to move the story along. And an eerie ending! Love this author's crazy ideas that actually work in the written form. When does Book Two come out?? Can't wait to get my hands on it!

I haven't read the first book in this series but don't feel I need to I order to fill unclear holes, which is good.There's a lot of war and weaponry (which is lifelike, which is pretty cool) and soul-searching in between. I love a book that can delicately weave in religion(s) and he does it well. There are some cool magical powers on top of dragons that were definite highlights of the story.The writing is a bit wordy and repetitive but the end made me super excited for the next book (GREAT ending). Overall a good read!*I received a free copy of this book for an unbiased review.
