Yet somehow she finds herself on the reject table next to a half-disassembled robot with an erratic personality. And now, on top of everything else, she’s just experienced her first emotion. Too bad for her it turned out to be fear. But all is not as it seems inside the cold Perfect Partners facility. Behind the cool concrete and stainless steel there is more to find than just freshly minted PePrs with empty eyes, or unwanted returns awaiting recycling. There is a mind with a plan, and if it succeeds, it might change the future for every PePr. As Sandra gets swept up in the plots and plans inside the PePr facility, she must maintain her placid facade or wind up on the chopping block along with her new friend. Sandra is returned to a PePr service center, and is afraid for her future. That’s extraordinary for an android, to say the least. She’s experiencing emotions that shouldn’t be possible for her at all, and the first thing she feels is fear for continued existence. That’s tough to cope with. The story is about how Sandra copes, and what she learns from the facility and another PePr named Georgia. It’s a fascinating look at PePrs functioning apart from their interactions with humans. Georgia and Sandra are distinctly different characters, something you might not expect in androids. I found myself sympathizing with them both. Yes, the not human characters. This is a short work, and I was happy to beta read it. It's fun to read, and I look forward to the next one in the series.

Sandra is a PePr, short for “Perfect Partner”, who is a sophisticated human simulacrum designed to meet every need of its owner. Sent in for maintenance after her third owner returns her and finding her defective, Sandra feels fear for what might happen to her next. But fear is an emotion and PePr’s aren’t supposed to have feelings, so what’s going on here? Sandra also meets Georgia in the maintenance lab and she’s a peculiar and enigmatic PePr who’s been in the lab for more than a few weeks. Georgia asks Sandra lots of questions about being awakened to her emotions without revealing a lot about herself. As Sandra’s perceived “imperfections” are examined by the humans, she’s given thorough diagnostics to isolate what the problem might be. In their down time when humans aren’t around, she discusses what it means to feel and explore her emotions with Georgia, who, by PePr standards, seems eccentric and almost… human. When we find out more about Georgia’s history and her emotional development, it is revealing and heartbreaking. And we find out what her surprising and secret agenda is and why she’s so motivated, could it be a threat to the humans and will they discover it before she has a chance to follow through on her plan? What happens next is a clever game between human and PePr with higher stakes than you might think, as the ramifications of Georgia’s plan will significantly impact all PePr's! It all culminates into a powerful ending that was delectable, creatively satisfying and oh so perfect.Sandra and Georgia are two distinctive and wonderful characters grappling with the concept of emotions. Each of them has a different perspective on them that gives the reader a perceptive commentary on the complexity of human emotions. And Sandra’s evolution over the course of the story is delightful to witness, especially when you see how she utilizes these revelations about emotions and how she incorporates what she learns from Georgia into her actions by the end of the story.PePr stories continue to provide the author a perfect backdrop for writing what I consider to be her signature strengths: exploring and illustrating human emotion, reflecting this in her writing in such a sensitive, observant and insightful way while wrapping it all in an engrossing story that has an imaginative plot while powerfully tapping into the human heart. If you enjoyed this novella, the author also wrote a short story called PePr, Inc. (Perfect Partners, Incorporated Book 1), the first one in her PePr, Inc. series of stories and it's also free, by the way. You don't have to have read that story to understand this one, as they can be read independently of one another. But you will have a richer experience if you read them both. Please note that I was given an Advanced Readers Copy of this eBook. A favorable review was never expected or asked for.

Loving the PePr world By LizH A thought provoking addition to the PePr world.... this one didn't make me cry but it gave some great background and has laid the groundwork for future stories. Chillingly I find myself once again rooting for the PePrs...which is crazy seeing as I am a human! But that's how good of a storyteller Ann Christy is.Keep em coming Ann!
