With her parents preoccupied and older brother unwilling to help, Ava puts on her cape and tiara and braves the dreaded downstairs to fight her fears and rescue her friend. By itself, the story is nothing new, but pairing it with Felten's sketch-heavy illustrations makes it something completely different. Black scribblelike inking with minimal solid colors gives a gritty, graphic novel feel to the familiar picture book territory. Rushing backgrounds and swooping action shots of Ava's wooden sword show her literally conquering her fears. Stories such as these usually end on an optimistic note, showing that there was nothing to fear all along; here viewers see that there is plenty to fear in Ava's mind, but she now has the strength to triumph over it. VERDICT Perhaps a tad dark for the preschool crowd, Maggiore and Felten's treatment of this familiar story theme not only overcomes a fear of the dark but also kicks it in the head. About the Author Lisa Maggiore earned her master’s in social service administration from the University of Chicago. She then leaped from her twenty-year career as a social worker to write her first picture book, Ava the Monster Slayer. Lisa loves to travel, watch “da Bears” (do not bother her on Sundays during the NFL season), and be silly with her family. She lives with her husband and four children in Chicago, Illinois.Ross Felten paints, draws, sketches, illustrates, illuminates, deviates, puts things together, and tears things apart. Aside from art, he is passionate about soccer, music, and making his girls laugh. Ross lives near Chicago, Illinois.

From going in her room alone in the BROAD daylight! To not wanting to sleep in her own bed at night. I take every opportunity to point out when something or someone is brave. Ava The Monster Slayer A Warrior Who Wears Glasses story to the rescue. First, I read through the book to see if I was going to make matters worse! I decided Alice would enjoy this book and I could teach Alice a little more about being brave.Starting with the cover I pointed out to Alice the similarities that she and Ava have. They both are Princesses complete with tiaras! Ava and Alice both love pirates and both have swords! (Seriously, what self-respecting Princess doesn’t have a sword??) Ava and Alice both look like they are four years old. Ava and Alice both have boots with straps. Both have cuddly animals that they love to sleep with. Both girls have heart pajamas too. I read each and every page in my funniest voice. Alice laughed, giggled and cheered for Ava!Ava is ready for bed when she discovers that Mom has left Piggy in the dryer. In the dryer in the basement! Where the monsters are!Ava has to be brave to get Piggy! There is no one to help her tonight. Mom is on the phone, Dad is working in the garage, big brother (you know, the trouble maker that told Ava about the monsters in the first place!) is no help at all. It was 101° and Alice ever the trooper put on footed pajamas (With hearts!) rain boots with hands AND A cape for NaNa’s Ava The Monster Slayer picture. AND SMILED!!! What an awesome kid!!!The brave and fearless Ava pushes up her glasses, puts on her cape, grabs her sword, puts on her boots and crown and heads for the dryer.Ava has to battle monsters throughout the dark house. With each obstacle Ava reminds herself that Piggy NEEDS her!Each time Ava conquers a monster with highlighted, large print ALL CAPS narratives. Ava is a fierce protector of Piggy! Monsters aren’t killed in this story, oh no, monsters are scared away!

Ava is such a great role model for girls and boys and the illustrations bring the story to life! Ava the Monster Slayer is about a little girl that must rescue her beloved Piggy from the basement dryer. She knows there are ferocious monsters lurking in the dark...will she be able to beat the monsters in order to save her piggy? My boys (ages 4 & 8) were on the edge of their seats while I read this book to them. Highly recommend!**We were sent this book in exchange for our honest opinion. **

Great read for kids - all ages, boys and girls, and us big kids too. The illustration and colors in this book really popped out, and my nieces love it! 100% recommend
