The hows and whys of the High Lord's binding to the land were were basically covered in one chapter at the very end and I would have liked to have been given a few more clues to what was going on a bit earlier in the piece. I would have liked to hear about the characters from the first book in this series too, it's sad that they seem to have lost relevance in the series. However, on the upside, I did enjoy finding out more about Graunt, and Thane and Kesara's interactions were a delight to read as always.

Wonderful characters, awkward plot, and grammar issues By Jacalyn The Brief:Dery excels at the interpersonal and character development, when the focus is on the characters the story shines. Sadly, this fun read turns disappointing with a plot that feels like one giant deus ex machina. In the end, the plot detracts from the beauty of the dialogue and relationships of the characters. With revision and editing a lot of these problems would most likely be fixed. The long part:1. The Needs Fixing: This book needs an editor badly. There are scenes that went on just a little too long, scenes where I couldn't tell who was talking, and the grammar and spelling needs work. I'm generally not a stickler for grammar, but when you have the word yelp used instead of whelp, when you have "orwynis" instead of "orwynism", and other grammar issues, well —an editor needs to step in. The formatting of the transition between scenes was not clear. There was so signal, like a paragraph break or asterisks, to tell the reader that a new character POV was occurring. It was frustrating. The plot needed some working on. By the end of the book I was wondering what happened to Almyrn, what happened to Merrick, what happens to Kesara and Thane, and why so many random magical elements were added in at the end of the series that should have been hinted at from the beginning. There were several parts of the book that seemed too perfect, too clean, and too easy for the characters (view spoiler). I was so sad with the Orwyn subplot, it was explained and fixed way too quickly. I liked where Dery went with it, but it could have been played out better. The book could use some help and some editing, but despite the issues I have with this book [I originally giving it 2.5/3 stars] I'm going to give it four stars, and this is why:2. The Beautiful Stuff: Kesara and Thane, how can I love them even more? I don't know. I loved their interactions, and their growth through learning about racism, fear, and prejudice. I loved learning about the history of Eladria, and more about Thane vicariously. The moments the two newlyweds had together were endearing and realistic. I thought it was fascinating watching Kesara go through her "condition", wondering what to do about it, and Thane's legitimate fears. Oh, Thane. He really excels as the Dread Lord, and I love the quote where Kesara notices that maybe the name wasn't just about his face, he is after all a Warlord. We've never really been privy to seeing that side of Thane, and it was eye opening. The characters continue to grow, even though the story doesn't focus on them, and they learn how to cope with some interesting ethical and personal issues. There are some great adult concepts that get looked at that I appreciate Dery bringing up. They're relevant to the book and the characters, and I loved that they were faced with some heavy issues. My new, but still second favorite duo, is Gwyn and Dominic. I consider both of them to be anti-heroes, they are not perfect, and they can show of their dark sides with a flip of a switch. Graunt's POV are always so fun to read, thought she can be a little too contemporary with her language sometimes. Like, I've stated, this book really stands out when the focus is on personal development and character interactions. I may not have been happy with this book as a conclusion to the series, but I will still excitedly wait for whatever Dery has planned next!
