About the Author Ambrose Bierce was an American writer, critic and war veteran. Bierce fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War, eventually rising to the rank of brevet major before resigning from the Army following an 1866 expedition across the Great Plains. Bierce s harrowing experiences during the Civil War, particularly those at the Battle of Shiloh, shaped a writing career that included editorials, novels, short stories and poetry. Among his most famous works are An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, The Boarded Window, Chickamauga, and What I Saw of Shiloh. While on a tour of Civil-War battlefields in 1913, Bierce is believed to have joined Pancho Villa s army before disappearing in the chaos of the Mexican Revolution.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Amusing and old fashioned By G Patterson This book is a long alphabtical list of literary faults by Ambrose Bierce (an American writer). It is mostly his own 'pet peeves' but this makes it amusing to read as he lists the correct way to say it, and often sounds very angry about the wrong way!! So I would recommend this book if you want to read about the formal 'correct' way to say anything, eg: 'I assumed a disguise' instead of 'I adopted a disguise'. He says you 'only adopt a child, not a disguise' :)

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Caught Up with an Old Friend By Ian Elliott When I was a young man I lived awhile with my stepgrandfather in San Diego, California. I remember he had a slim red volume called 'Write It Right', by Ambrose Bierce. It must have been a first edition, from around 1911, when he was around 21. He had penciled into the flyleaf, "He is at variance with Webster on several points." Gramps prided himself on good grammar and liked working crosswords and the Kingsley Double-Crostics that were published weekly at the back of the 'Saturday Review'. I enjoyed leafing through the Bierce, and noting with interest his preference for treating the noun 'the United States' as a plural. This, it seemed to me, reflected a conservative outlook that preceded, and resisted, federal efforts at promoting a strong sense of national unity. And that is where I place the value of this little volume, as an interesting historical relic of the English language as it was once spoken. Its standards are a lot tighter than our own, and for that reason I recommend it as a guide to the thought patterns of our ancestors living in that now remote time.

Coping with Ork invasions By JPS This title is a collection of eight short stories and novella which tend to go two by two.The first two, for instance, are about the Obsidian Glaives’ Chapter, and their heroic but doomed resistance against waves of invading Orks while defending their fortress-monastery. I particularly liked the first of these in which the Chapter unleashes its most precious treasuries and relics of its glorious past (I will let you find out what exactly these treasures are!) in an attempt to turn the tide.The next two short stories are about hives of the planet Ghul Jensen, one attacked by Orks while the other was the victim of an uprising by a sect imitating Orks. It is besieged by loyal Imperial Guard forces trying to recover control of it before the real Ork invasion takes place. Again, I particularly liked this second story because of a certain Imperial character send on a suicide mission.Stories five and six are my favourite. They are perhaps the most original of the collection and are also somewhat amusing. This is they are both told from the perspective of the Orks themselves. Their rather interesting dialogues and names are likely to make you smile. One of these stories also includes a rather superb battle between Garguants – the Orks giant machines that are the equivalents of imperial Titans. Another great scene is the battle between the Ork machines and the mechanical Knights of Alaric Prime. The main original feature, however, is a rather fascinating story about Ork “Mekbosses”. These make up what is perhaps the most dangerous component of the Orkish forces because they are innovative and one of these will in affect take control of the invading force before the end of the story.Fans of the Space Wolves will be particularly gratified by the last two stories, both of which include Ragnar Blackmane and his Great Company. The fist story is about a squad of Space Wolves and its Rune Priest in particular that are chased up a sacred mountain (hence the novella’s title “Blood on the Mountain”) and hunted by a horde of Orks lead by a possessed gigantic one. A particularly interesting feature is that this Ork “warboss” has enslaved a Knight by using the Powers from Chaos. Those linking stories with war psykers are likely to appreciate this one. The second story features the same Rune Priest (one Ulli Iceclaw) reporting on a battle where the impetuous Lord Ragnar Blackmane had to be bailed out by Lord Grimnar himself and his Wolf Guard (all in Terminator armour and fur pelts, of course).Out of these eight stories, readers (myself included) will find some more likeable than others. I did not, however, find any real weak ones. I would probably have rated this collection something like 4.6 or 4.7 stars if this had been possible. Since it is not, I will go for five stars, because I feel that four stars would be somewhat harsh.

Borden evokes the era through small details, word choices, and descriptions of everyday activities, such as building a snowman, the first day of school, writing letters to Ted, and spending summer days on the porch drinking lemonade and listening to baseball games on the radio. The war remains distant until the fateful telegram arrives. Parker alternates scenes of Molly's life with images of Ted on the USS Albacore. The artist's characteristic loose-lined ink-and-watercolor paintings capture the sense of a once-secure and orderly world becoming less stable. The lyrical prose and evocative pictures create a poignant slice-of-life tale that resonates with the emotions of the friends and family members on the homefront. World War II seems far away to Molly, but her fourth-grade teacher brings it close by painting an enormous map on the wall so that the class can follow its progress, and asking the children to write letters to the servicemen. Molly writes to her next-door neighbor Ted, a friendly young man on a submarine in the Pacific. Unfortunately, Ted does not come home, but the war ends and life goes on. Beautifully written in an understated tone, the story offers a believable picture of life during the war. Tangible details of everyday activities make the arrival of the telegram relaying Ted's death and the reactions of his family and friends all the more poignant. A typical page of text, formed into free-verse stanzas, faces a full-page watercolor painting illustrating a scene in the children's school or neighborhood or, in a few instances, showing a submarine in the Pacific. Restrained yet expressive, the artwork conveys moods and mindsets as well as a strong sense of the time and place. The relatively short, graceful text and the evocative art offer an effective introduction to the period and to the profound effects that even a faraway war can have on those at home. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Based on a real WWII hero, a tear-jerker By Elisabeth Louise Borden is one of my favorite children's authors. She captures the historical facts and gives them an immediacy that her readers can relate to. This is the story of Ted Walker, a young sailor who perished when his submarine was destroyed during World War II, told as a memory of an older woman, but through her eyes as a young neighbor girl whose classmates wrote letters to him. It's a coming-of-age story, gently told and gently remembered.

Her favorite neighbor is Ted Walker. All the kids in the neighborhood look up to him as their hero. He is a naval officer of the submarine USS Albacore. One day the navy sends word to Ted's mom that he is missing in action. The story ends and Molly is grown now. She still remembers Ted and his fellow crew men who made the ultimate scarafice for our freedom.

Clearly written, wise advice By Bob Wilson Ray does a great job of explaining why you need strategic planning and lays out a solid foundation for doing so. I especially like that he has a structured process but also allows for spontaneity and flexibility as part of the process. With knights and Easter parties (and possibly a juvenile criminal!) it is written to be extremely funny (which it really, truly is). Aldo Zelnick’s grade, the fifth to be exact, hosts an annual medieval tournament. So, he and his two friends become knights. Amazing deeds, dragons, heroics, glory! But, there's a problem, where do you begin? And then there’s the Easter bunny thing. After a hilarious incident during Aldo’s childhood, the Easter bunny is the main character on “Easter’s most wanted”. This is a great book for kids and adults older than 7 years old. By Boulder Rocks It's amazing how this series that started out great with "Artsy-Fartsy" just keeps getting better. Against a backdrop of a the Dana Elementary 5th-grader's medieval fair, our favorite characters decide to be the heroic knights of Jackalope Junction. In this Easter episode (with no Easter Bunny spoilers), they solve mysteries and confront the complexities of human nature, all with laugh-out-loud hilarity (and a great recipe for apricot kiffels). My 9-year-old son says "this is really awesome. I recommend it for anyone who likes suspense and mystery and silliness." As a parent, I love how the authors subtly sneak apt and amusing vocabulary into the stories, and how the characters are multi-dimensional. (This series is vastly superior to the "Wimpy Kid" series and other popular series, both artistically and as engaging and enriching literature.)We'll be sending this book to lots of family friends for Easter this year. Can't wait for the next one!

It follows Kyian who is an elfish tree shepherd. Though, elves aren't the only creatures in the story. It also has vampires that really mix things up and create problems. This story is an adventure all the way through. Once I started reading, I couldn't put the book down until I had finished the entire book. It is exciting all the way to the end. Though, I don't want to spoil the book for you. If you like fantasy adventures, this is the book for you!

By BRNZ I need to find whoever mentioned this series and buy them dinner and drinks as a thankyou - I fell in love with the first book and have GLOMMED everything written since in the St Mary's series and I LOVE THEM SO HARD!!This was an excellent installment, we have Neanderthals and mammoths, Joan of Arc, battle scenes, swamp scenes, exploding pigs and the usual St Mary's goings on. What I liked most about this book was that Max has 5 new trainees and a new training program to test drive and, well, whats the worst that could happen?There was some rather heavy handed foreshadowing, some of which was so obvious that the final reveal I had already guessed it which was a shame

By Kenneth Foulke Again I'm surprised by how well Jodi Taylor has kept the story of Max and her historians moving along. After all the books, and I've read the all, this volume is as fresh, funny, tragic and as wierd as all the rest.I cannot imagne too many authors who can combine Neanderthals, King Tut, a mammoth [named Mary by the way], an exploding pig, Joan of Arc, Richard III, a visit from the "cops", mayhem in general, an ending that sets the stage for what is to come and pull it off so well and enjoyably. I believe the ending sets us up for an entirely new meaning to "What Could Possibly Go Wrong". If Mary the Mammoth could wreck such havoc, I can hardly wait to see what......., read the book and find out "what the what probably is", no spoilers here.I have to say that this volume had scenes that had me laughing harder and longer the any previous books. It's probably not a book to be reading in public, lest you want to be thought of as being a little bonkers. On the other hand, historians do die and people are seriously injured by things that go terribly wrong, so there is some balance in the story.I totally enjoyed how Ms Taylor incorporated the death of Richard III, the discovery of his remains under a parking lot in 2013 and then managed to "explain" the origin of the mysterious "R" that marked his grave. A very nice piece of writing. I can hardly wait for the next installment as much as I know that 12 hours after I get it, I'll be saying the same thing.....agian.

They are funny and I love the historical events they visit and reading the author's take on how it really happened. I devoured all of the series when I discovered them and am now consigned to wait (impatiently) until Ms. Taylor publishes the next one!

I am glad I bought this book By ragequitkitteh Overall, I am glad I bought this book, but a lot of the "tips" for kids were merely smile emojis which is largely unhelpful, and aren't actually tips. Additionally, the information for disability Disney goers was a brief paragraph that directed you to look into it yourself. Other areas of the book had been updated, but still used confusing outdated terms, like the entire Disney Springs section (formerly Downtown Disney). I also did not find that the forms for establishing my before trip needs (i.e. financial planning) were very universally accessible, I honestly removed mine because it was not helping me. Would recommend for general use, not someone looking for specific information for first time kids trips (for rides or food recommendations) or disability information. I did really enjoy the end of each section having quotes from other Disney goers, the full color maps for each park (these are going to be super helpful), and the large pockets at the end of the book for your trip (these are genius). Pros and cons to this; Pros: is helpful for general information about the park, has a lot of maps, pockets, and is extremely user friendly; Cons: has literally no disability information, some of the updated stuff is not all that informative, has "kids tips" (teens too) that are rather lacking.

By Char I'm only giving 3 stars to a 5 star book as I just received it and want everyone to check on page 151 to see if their copy has a duplicate map from page 172 of Hollywood studios and not the Epcot map that should be there. I have contacted Amazon on this as I believe it is a publishing error. This book is great otherwise and the maps are so nice to take along as they have a glossy finish. Please look into this matter to see if it was just my copy or a publisher mistake.

It takes you step by step through all the planning you need to do for a Disney trip. There are pages in the back with envelopes and spaces for you to enter all your information, receipts, etc. for each day of your trip.In addition, the PassPorter website (for a small membership fee) is full of printable PDF pages, tips and information about planning your trip.

Destiny is very different from Zfinity, book 3, where many of our favorite characters were killed off. I think most of us fans could not understand why...but I think Destiny will answer your questions and let the healing begin as we recover from where we were left at the end of book 3.I laughed so much in the first two books of the series. I think we can all agree, losing Julie, Fred, and many others left many of us thinking the author was taking this story in the wrong direction at the end of Zfinity. Let me assure you, Zach picks himself up and continues on. I did not laugh in this book but I saw the evolution from a sarcastic smart mouth kid to a more thoughtful and pragmatic man who knows his own failings.The zombie apocalypse is a great tool to bring out the best in certain people, the survivors. It was fun to read the first 2 books but not so much fun to read the third. When someone is "Destined" to change humanity, they have to go through trials and tribulations and be tested in battle.This book is very low key and resets the story in a direction that would not have been possible if the author had not been brave enough to make drastic changes in the story line. It was painful to get here but you will enjoy reading this next chapter.

By Boscowashisnamo Zombie Rules saga continues with Book 4, and with it the main character Zack matures from the 16 year old kid naive and untrained into a well read and experienced zombie killer and homesteader. Throughout this series he has shared his Z Rules in an effort so others may survive, and gained knowledge and wisdom from his mentors Rick and Fred. Zack has suffered many heartaches and setbacks, had friends murdered, but survived and thrived.This series is one of the better in the ZA/PA genre, with a solid story line and developed characters. I would recommend the Zombie Rules series to all that enjoy a good read in this genre.

There were times that it became very intense so it was a good ebb and flow throughout. Characters were well developed and easily followed unlike some in this genre. Enjoyed a lot of the relationships without it becoming over done. Wouldn't say it's a favorite but would suggest it to a friend if they are interested in the genre.
