The theme is predominately military science fiction (Fleet and Marines) with some social science fiction topics. It takes a while to adjust to the writing style and the heavy descriptive prose but once into the book it is hard to put down. There are both strong male and female leads that are likeable and supported by a fair amount of character development. The author is good at his craft and there is great length to the yarn. The read starts a little slow--give it a chance. If you are looking for large Fleet actions and constant action--this book might not be your cup of tea. There is, however, enough action to move the storyline nicely. I will buy the next offering in what I believe will be a wonderful series.

We have met the enemy and they are us By Barry Melius A centuries long struggle spanning a large part of the galaxy and multiple empires, human and alien, has just come to a close as The Spiral War opens. Focus is on a famed ship, crew and captain as they get their first post war liberty. The arrest of their captain brings reality crashing down as they face the choice of loyalty to a man that has been there for them time and again or a uncaring high command. Our lead protagonist is the third officer who has been held in low regard by the crew and especially the marine contingent because of his wealthy background. Confusion reigns as good guys and bad shift sides and lines are redrawn. Dynamics between our lead and the rest of the crew entertain as respect and affection grow on both sides. The female head marine grabs a serious share of the lead and is a pivot to all that ensues. Players drawn with depth and breadth, both alien and human,as they struggle to find a place to stand in a world gone awry. Slow build sets up for a smashing finale in what is to be a multi part series. Good editing, more than good writing, recommended.

Joel Shepherd has done it again great SO, a little slow to start but picks up quickly By Takkom Yea ok I could not put it down: Joel Shepherd has created another extremely detailed SO. For me there was frankly a little too much race history for others they will be so very pleased. The characters both good and bad are excellent one war has ended another appears to be starting and things are not what anyone thought they were for a very long time. The Combat Carrier Phoenix is an interesting ship to say the least as is her commander. Quite a few battles both with the ship and with the onboard Marines led by a female Major that does in fact kick serious arse. Once you get passed the slow beginning things pick up very quickly and at the end you are just left asking when is the next one Joel?
