The relationships between the crew are real, often funny, and nothing is wasted in building and developing the characters. A flawed leader with an assortment of misanthropes trying to survive in a universe controlled by autocrats and wizards. I read both Mission Pack 1 & 2 in 4 days. It took 4 days because I had to restrain myself from reading them all in one sitting. There are so many possibilities for this series. I hope there will be more.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Magic & Tech, oh my! By science lord Morin has winning series, in my opinion. His mix of magic and technology is believable and a lot of fun. The Carl Ramsey crew are fascinating scrounderels. It is very difficult to put down this series. Episode 8 is finally joshed and I want more. This is a great read, just like mission pal 1. You really will enjoy it more if mission pak 1 is read first. I strongly recommend both pals to all!

I'm hooked, great for "Firefly" lovers By BananaMartini I started reading because I saw an ad for the first book free and I wanted to support an indie writer. Now I'm going through withdrawal waiting for the third mission pack to come out, and I've just downloaded the beginning of the twinborn and tinker series to decide what I'm reading next. Confident I'll end up just as hooked on those collections.

I dreaded reading this, but wanted to because it was part of a series.Right from the first chapter I fell in love with Lucas and Reggie! I was surprised and pleased that this was not like most other vampire stories like Twilight. I would love to read a follow up on Lucas & Reggie!I could identify with Reggie's issues with her sister Taryn as my sister & I have had similar issues growing up. Taryn knew all along that her sister Reggie was the true bondmate for Lucas. She still strung him along for 6 years and kept him from the truth. Now Taryn is getting married and want's the Ally mark removed before her wedding.Reggie is tasked with the job of going to Georgetown to retrieve Lucas and bring him back home. Lucas will not fly. As they drive across the states Lucas realizes that Reggie is his true bondmate. Now to convince her. The drive is a great time for them to get to know each other better.I don't want to give away too much more of the book. Go get your copy! I am looking for the other books and then the finale where Chloe and Eros finally get their own story!

He was convinced she was his bond mate. Then she broke it off. Now ten years later she is marrying a man who proposed after 1 date and she needs him to remove the mark that claims her as an ally to the Strigoi Vampire family. She sends her little sister to collect him. What a shock it is to him to discover that Reagan Aliat is the woman he should have been courting. True she was only 16 then but it explains a whole lot. Now he needs to convince her that he now knows she is The One. Reagan has been in love with Lucas since she was a kid but he only had eyes for her spoiled older sister Taryn. She truly believes that once Lucas sees Taryn again he won’t want the baby sister. He is going to have to work hard to convince her and Taryn won’t be an asset.I loved Reagan for her intelligence, fortitude and her zest for life I abhorred Taryn for too many reasons to list here and I absolutely adored this story. I found myself cheering and yelling and ended up doing a total happy dance. This story will suck you in and keep you reading till the very end.

I take my time reading everything he writes because he has, in a short time, become one of my favorite authors and I learn so much from his work. This collection of short stories is extremely unique because of the brilliant way they fall together over time, starting with 18 years before the first book in the Powder Mage Trilogy and ending with a tale between books one and two. Each piece is engaging, enlightening, and exciting. Classic McClellan, if you ask me. If you love fresh, epic fantasy, you need to read everything this guy writes.

No, I haven’t finished the initial trilogy yet, but I loved Promise of Blood and have found all of Mr. McClellan’s short stories set in this fascinating world spectacular. And the reason why, quite simply, is the flintlock fantasy setting and the brilliant concept of powder mages. Both of these things meshing together so well that this universe comes alive before your eyes; the smell of gunpowder filling your nostrils; the shrieks of an angry mob demanding blood roaring in your ears..Okay, okay, I also have to give some credit to the interesting characters inhabiting the tale (No story works without great characters after all.), because Field Marshall Tamas, Taniel, and all the others pop off the pages, but, honestly, the flintlock fantasy backdrop used by Mr. McClellan is so creative, so refreshing that it has single-handedly converted me into a flintlock lover instead of a doubter.With this short story collection, the author takes readers back into that amazing Powder Mage universe, skipping from time period to time period and from character to character, using these brief snapshots to flesh out the history of several of the stars from Promise of Blood.It all begins with a tale focusing on Captain Verundish and her personal travails, which, inevitable, involves General Tamas. The narrative not only giving a reader a background of the good Captain, but also allowing us a chance to see the General through the eyes of his soldier. You can read all my thoughts about “Hope’s End” in my full review .“The Girl of Hrusch Avenue” takes place ten years before the events in Promise of Blood. Here Vlora is an orphan who finds herself bereft of a real home (She is in a foster care type setting.), and when a stranger arrives at her “home” wishing to take her away, she fears the very worst and flees into the city to live a precarious life on the streets close to the muskets factories. Her fascination with gunpowder and rifles causing her to spend endless amounts of time observing their use. Eventually, fate causes her to befriends a youth named Taniel. Their strange friendship changing both their lives.“Green-Eyed Vipers” is told through the viewpoint of Baroness Petara. This politically savvy, stunningly beautiful woman is a hunter of men; her current prey being the widowed Field Marshall Tamas. But while everything seems to be proceeding exactly as she plans, the Baroness soon discovers that the hunter is really the prey.“The Face in the Mirror” is an exciting, poignant showcase for Field Marshall Tamas’ son Taniel. While this young powder mage’s exploits in Fastrastan is mentioned numerous times in book one of the trilogy, his adventures were not fully revealed. Here, though, the details of his involvement in the frontier war between the vile Kez and brave revolutionaries of this “New World” come to life, revealing so much about Taniel and his internal issues.“Return to Honor” concludes this collection in style. The story taking place immediately after the events of Promise of Blood, putting Vlora in the spotlight after she spent much of that novel as the woman-who-was-engaged-to-Taniel-and-cheated-on-him. Now, she is shown in her true element, as a strong, competent soldier who accepts her mistakes but demands that she not be defined by them.In the Field Marshal’s Shadow is a highly entertaining return to the Powder Mage universe. It touches upon most of the major characters from Promise of Blood in some shape or fashion, showing them as multi-faceted people who have their own issues, problems and strengths. While I would have loved even more powder mage awesomeness from the collection, Mr. McClellan gave me just enough to whet my appetite for more stories while simultaneously helping me appreciate Captain Verundish, Taniel, Vlora and Field Marshall Tamas even more than I already did.

This collection has a number of short stories that offer additional insight and background on characters introduced in the main trilogy. Each of these stories takes place chronically before the first book, but you should read the book first, then these stories, as it will make more sense this way. These events are mentioned or alluded to in the main book, so it is good to be able to expand upon those comments & learn about what really happened & how things truly went down. Recommended for fans of the trilogy & for readers that like fantasy books.

About the Author Peter May is the multiple-award-winning author of the internationally bestselling Lewis Trilogy, set in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, as well as several other mystery series and stand-alone novels. One of Scotland's most prolific television dramatists, he garnered more than a thousand credits in fifteen years as scriptwriter and script editor on prime-time British television drama, including the show Machair, set on Lewis. Today May lives in France with his wife, the writer Janice Hally.David Wilson worked with the BBC for twenty years and was the production designer for Machair. Bublitz I have read all three of Peter May's novels set in the Hebrides, so it was great to see photos of the areas that inspired the books. The first chapter gives some geological and social history of the islands. The next four chapters describe May's history with the islands and the settings for the three books, respectively. I am not sure how interesting the text will be to those unfamiliar with Peter May's work or novels, but the photos are fantastic and do a good job of capturing the essence of the area.

Breathtaking beauty By Ann The author of the Lewis Trilogy of suspense novels set in the Outer Hebrides takes you on a tour of the very places featured in the stories. Even without knowing the connections, one is transported through the eyes of a professional photographer to a magical and haunting landscape most of us will never see but yearn to because of its remoteness and ethereal beauty.

Great companion to Lewis trilogy with stunning photography By Scout If you've been to the Hebrides you'll be especially pleased with the book and its gorgeous photos. If you're reading May's Lewis trilogy, this is a lovely companion. My one hesitation: I ordered from a vendor called Total Books because at the time I ordered the book, that was the best available option here. It was a mistake. I waited a month with all kinds of non-sequitur replies or non-replies to my inquiries regarding order status, and finally had to submit a claim. I see this vendor is still here. You could go to Scotland by yourself and pick up a copy and have a lovely holiday before Total Crooks will deliver your book. And it would be a great trip. The most beautiful place in the world.

His writing style, which I can only describe as "down home" is fun, engaging and quuckly gets to the heart of the point he is making. While I am long past my first job I still learned about some of the subtle aspects of working in an office environment. Wish he was around when I needed him.There is also a section of stories people wrote about their first job (including one as a long poem). For the newbie there are great lessons to learn about how to maximize thehard earned benefits of job #1.All in all a wonderful use of the relatively short time it took me to read this book. And I left with lots of smiles.

I work for a professional sports organization. I work on a complex computer system and I deal with customers. My team is about 20 people. I gave myself 30 days to make mistakes with the system and 90 days to become a top team member and this book will help me achieve my goal. I liked the way the book is organized with checklists, scenarios and rules for success. I learned about networking and business results. Jeffrey Tarter is able convey a consolidation of information in one book to help the new employee transition well into their new job. I would highly recommend this book for new employees and job hunters.
